The references disclosed are also individually and specifically incorporated by reference herein for the material contained in them that is discussed in the sentence in which the reference is relied upon. General Definitions In this specification and in the claims that follow, reference will be made to a number of terms, which shall be defined to have the following meanings. Throughout the description and claims of this specification the word “comprise” and other forms of the word, such as “comprising” and “comprises,” means including but not limited to, and is not intended to exclude, for example, other additives, components, integers, or steps. 11625-006WO1; EX_ID_1038 and 1039 As used in the specification and in the claims, the term “comprising” can include the aspects “consisting of” and “consisting essentially of.” As used in the description and the appended claims, the singular forms “a,” “an,” and “the” include plural referents unless the context clearly dictates otherwise. Thus, for example, reference to “a composition” includes mixtures of two or more such compositions, reference to “an agent” includes mixtures of two or more such agents, reference to “the component” includes mixtures of two or more such components, and the like. “Optional” or “optionally” means that the subsequently described event or circumstance can or cannot occur, and that the description includes instances where the event or circumstance occurs and instances where it does not. Ranges can be expressed herein as from “about” one particular value, and / or to “about” another particular value. By “about” is meant within 5% of the value, e.g., within 4, 3, 2, or 1% of the value. When such a range is expressed, another aspect includes from the one particular value and / or to the other particular value. Similarly, when values are expressed as approximations, by use of the antecedent “about,” it will be understood that the particular value forms another aspect. It will be further understood that the endpoints of each of the ranges are significant both in relation to the other endpoint, and independently of the other endpoint. Throughout this disclosure, various aspects of the invention can be presented in a range format. It should be understood that the description in range format is merely for convenience and brevity and should not be construed as an inflexible limitation on the scope of the invention. Accordingly, the description of a range should be considered to have specifically disclosed all the possible subranges as well as individual numerical values within that range. For example, a description of a range such as from 1 to 6 should be considered to have specifically disclosed subranges such as from 1 to 3, from 1 to 4, from 1 to 5, from 2 to 4, from 2 to 6, from 3 to 6, etc., as well as individual numbers within that range, for example, 1, 2, 2.7, 3, 4, 5, 5.3, 6 and any whole and partial increments therebetween. This applies regardless of the breadth of the range. When the specific values are disclosed between two end values, it is understood that these end values can also be included. For the terms “for example” and “such as,” and grammatical equivalences thereof, the phrase “and without limitation” is understood to follow unless explicitly stated otherwise. It is further understood that these phrases are used not used in a restrictive sense, but for explanatory purposes. “Exemplary” means “an example of” and is not intended to convey an indication of a preferred or ideal embodiment. 11625-006WO1; EX_ID_1038 and 1039 It is understood that throughout this specification the identifiers “first” and “second” are used solely to aid in distinguishing the various components and steps of the disclosed subject matter. Spatially relative terms, such as "beneath," "below," "lower," "above," "upper," “bottom,” “top,” and the like, may be used herein for ease of description to describe one element or feature's relationship to another element(s) or feature(s) as illustrated in the figures. It will be understood that the spatially relative terms are intended to encompass different orientations of the device in use or operation in addition to the orientation depicted in the figures. For example, if the device in the figures is turned over, elements described as "below" or "beneath" other elements or features would then be oriented "above" the other elements or features. Example 1 Described herein is a family of lithium conducting materials, known as fast-ion conductors or solid electrolytes. In some examples, the compositions are based on the material compositions of Li3MIIIX6 and Li2MIVX6 – these materials can be generalized to the formula Li3-zM[III+z]X6(where M is a transition metal or post-transition metal cation (or a combination , X is a halide or combination of halide anions, and z is an integer from -2 to 2 with the final exponent number of M representing the valence of the M-ion(s) in the structure). From this starting chemical composition, dopants have been added to create a family of materials of general formula Li3+2x+y-zM[III+z]X6-x-yNxOy. These halide-based materials can be prepared via a purely mechanochemical synthesis. Depending on the degree of crystallinity desired in the material, they can be thermally treated post synthesis to improve the crystallinity of the 11625-006WO1; EX_ID_1038 and 1039 material’s structure. These materials show exceptional lithium-ion conductivity and are made of inexpensive precursors, making them promising candidates for all-solid-state lithium batteries. Introduction. All-solid-state batteries are considered the next step-change to current lithium-ion batteries owing to its improvement in safety and other performance metrics such as energy density and the ability to fast-charge the battery. A factor driving the transition to solid- state batteries is their non-flammability (safety) and proposed ability to enable a lithium metal anode, which can be important for the improvement in performance metrics. Lithium metal is highly reactive and unstable in current liquid electrolytes used in lithium batteries and will can cause catastrophic failure in under 100 cycles that can ignite the flammable liquid electrolyte. There has been significant improvement over the past 15-20 years in the available materials to enable this next-generation technology, namely solid-state electrolytes. The most promising materials that meet the minimum requirement of high lithium-ion conductivity come up short when other considerations are weighed for integration into a full lithium battery. Common materials that are being heavily pursued for towards the possibility of enabling an all- solid-state lithium metal anode battery are the oxides – garnet Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO), Li1+xAlxTi2- x(PO4)3 (LATP), Li1+xAlxGe2-x(PO4)3 (LAGP), perovskite Li3xLa2 / 3-xTiO3 LLTO, etc. - and sulfides - Li10GeP2S12 (LGPS), Li7P3S11 (LPS), Li3PS4, argyrodite Li6PS5Cl (LPSCl), etc. Each of these material classes have promising candidate materials with lithium-ion conductivities about the minimum threshold to enable a solid-state battery either for room-temperature or high temperature applications. However, all of the materials discovered to date have significant shortcomings that are either major engineering challenges when it comes to cell design that limit the realized potential of the final solid-state battery, are fundamental material shortcomings that make them impractical to use in a full cell, or are difficult to process in such a way that any realized benefit of the final cell would be negated (expensive and / or extremely difficult processing). Halide-based solid-state electrolyte materials are a relatively recent class of materials that was discovered in 2018. These materials provide a unique combination of properties that make them well-suited for all-solid-state batteries. They are produced with inexpensive precursors and manufacturing methods, have a relatively high ionic conductivity, and a wide electrochemical stability window. The original materials that were introduced were of the composition Li3MX6, where M is a 3+ transition-metal or post transition-metal and X is a group 7 halogen and contained a variable structure depending on halogen anion element. The Li3YCl6 (LYC) composition crystalizes in the P3തm1 space group (distorted NiAs structure) with the Li3YBr6 (LYB) 11625-006WO1; EX_ID_1038 and 1039 composition crystalizes in the C2 / m space group (distorted rock-salt structure). The primary difference between these two compositions is that the LYC material has a hexagonal close- packed-like anion sublattice, while the LYB material has a cubic close-packed-like anion sublattice – for both materials all the cations (Li+and Y3+in this case) are in octahedral site geometries with one third of the available cation sites left vacant. Although these materials possess a relatively high ionic conductivity on the order of 10-4S cm-1after a purely mechanochemical synthesis, only the Li3YBr6 material shows promise of surpassing the material requirement of 10-3S cm-1for ionic conductivity required for a practical room-temperature all- solid-state battery – after a high temperature crystallization step. Therefore, there is still a great need to develop a halide-based solid-electrolyte with > 10-3Scm-1ionic conductivity at room- temperature that can be prepared through an inexpensive mechanochemical synthesis method. Herein, the composition of these base materials was modified to improve the ionic conductivity of the materials closer to the operational range of 10-3Scm-1. These chemical modifications can also improve the interfacial compatibility / stability of the materials with other lithium battery components, such as the cathode active material, the anode active material, and alternative interfacial materials. Additionally, the chemical modifications can make the material more stable across a range of solvents for wet processing the material into a full battery cell. These materials remain inexpensive and demonstrate high ionic conductivity in a low state of crystallinity stemming from their purely mechanochemical synthesis. Detailed description. Described herein is a compositional family of solid electrolyte materials, their method of preparation, and their resulting attributes specifically as they can be applied to their use in all-solid-state batteries or hybrid solid-state batteries. The compositional family of materials described herein is Li3+2x+y-zM[III+z]X6-x-yNxOy (where M is a transition metal or post-transition metal cation (or a combination thereof), X is a halide or combination of halide anions, and z is an integer from -2 to 2 with the final exponent number of M representing the valence of the M-ion(s) in the structure). These materials can be prepared to have a high ionic conductivity though a purely mechanochemical synthesis without the need for a high temperature sintering step. However, a high temperature sintering step can be added to tune the degree of crystallinity for these materials. The ability to obtain a high ionic conductivity without the need of a high temperature synthesis step drastically reduces the manufacturing costs of these materials. Additionally, the ionic conductivity obtained with some of the compositions tested for this disclosure exceeds what has previously been reported for this class of materials. Structure. The materials in the Li3+2x+y-zM[III+z]X6-x-yNxOy compositional family crystallize in the P3തm1 space group (distorted NiAs structure) for halide elements that are higher 11625-006WO1; EX_ID_1038 and 1039 up on the periodic table (Cl and F), but can crystallize in the C2 / m space group (distorted rock- salt structure) for bromine and lower halide elements (iodine). Figure 1 provides an isometric view of the P3തm1 crystal structure where the silver spheres represent lithium atomic positions in the structure, but their occupancy varies depending on the lithium concentration material as reflected in the compositional formula. The blue spheres represent the atomic positions of the halide anion or oxygen / nitrogen anion dopant that is novel to the disclosed material system. Figure 2, Figure 3, and Figure 4 show the distorted NiAs structure along the a, b, and c crystallographic planes, respectively. To demonstrate the feasibility of producing these materials, two compositions were prepared – Li2.75ZrCl5.25O0.75 and Li3.25ZrCl5N0.25O0.75. These materials were prepared by combining stoichiometric amounts of LiCl, ZrCl4, Li3N, and / or Li2O in a ZrO2 jar with ZrO2 grinding media, grinding the precursors for 12 hours in a planetary ball-mill then grinding the mixture for 6 hours in a high-energy ball mill. The resulting materials were tested as is. X-ray diffraction was performed on these two material compositions to confirm their crystal structure. The X-ray diffraction pattern of the Li2.75ZrCl5.25O0.75 material is shown in Figure 5. The sharp peaks designated with a * are attributed to the aluminum sample holder required for air-sensitive sample testing. The other peaks are more diffuse indicating a low degree of crystallinity from the actual halide solid electrolyte material. However, the peak positions indicate that the proper structure was formed without any sign of residual precursor materials or other material impurities. Figure 6 shows the X-ray diffraction pattern of the Li3.25ZrCl5N0.25O0.75 material. The results of this material are similar to that of the other composition. The peaks attributed to the halide solid electrolyte sample are more diffuse, again indicating a low degree of crystallinity, but the peaks are in the right positions to verify that the right structure was formed for this material. For this sample, there was again no indication of residual unreacted precursor material or the formation of any impurity phases. Li+Conductivity. Figure 7 shows the electrochemical impedance spectrum of the synthesized Li2.75ZrCl5.25O0.75 and Li3.25ZrCl5N0.25O0.75 materials. Each sample was compressed into a pellet for electrochemical impedance measurements and tested in a symmetric cell with stainless steel electrodes on both sides of the pellet. The impedance spectra were obtained in the frequency range of 1 MHz to 0.1 Hz with a perturbation voltage of 10 mV. The ionic conductivity values (ı) shown for each material were determined by fitting each spectrum with the equivalent circuit shown in Figure 8. The R2 value obtained via the fitting was then input into the formula, 11625-006WO1; EX_ID_1038 and 1039 ^^ ൌ^ ൈ ^where l is the thickness of the pellet cross-sectional area of the pellet sample, and R is the resistance value (R2 in from the spectrum fitting for the respective material. The calculated ionic conductivity values for all the prepared compositions are provided in Table 1. Table 1. Summary of prepared example halide solid electrolyte material compositions described herein and their measured Li+conductivity. Material Composition Ionic Conductivity (mS / cm) Li22 ZrCl O 2 0272 Example 2 Described herein is a concept for a secondary all-solid-state lithium metal battery consisting of the halide-based ceramic solid electrolyte materials described herein and an interfacial material between this solid electrolyte material and a high-energy density anode – namely silicon (or a silicon composite) and / or lithium metal (or a lithium metal alloy or composite). The interfacial layer can stabilize the interface between the high energy density anode and the halide based solid electrolyte materials. This disclosure encompasses the family of halide solid electrolyte materials described above into an all-solid-state battery. For such batteries, the cathode composite can be reformulated to include some of the solid electrolyte composition. Further, an interlayer can be included between the solid electrolyte and a high energy density anode material, such as a silicon (or silicon composite) or a lithium metal anode (or a composite or alloy thereof). The cathode composite can be deposited on an aluminum foil current collector that can optionally contain a carbon coating. The cathode composite itself can comprise: 1) the cathode active material, 2) the solid electrolyte material, 3) an electronically conductive carbon additive, 11625-006WO1; EX_ID_1038 and 1039 and 4) (optionally) a polymeric binder. The battery can be assembled with a wide range of cathode active materials. Two of the leading industry chemistries for cathode active materials are LiFePO4 and Li[NixMnyCoz]O2 (x+y+z =1). The electrolyte component(s) can comprise the halide-based solid electrolyte compositions disclosed herein above. In some examples, the electrolyte can optionally contain a polymeric binder material. The interfacial layer can comprise a lithium-ion conducting solid that is stable against the halide-based solid electrolyte and the high energy density anode. For example, the interfacial layer can comprise a material with high reduction stability, but high oxidation stability is optional. The anode component can comprise a silicon composite anode (silicon with a conductive carbon additive and binder), or a lithium metal anode (can be pure lithium metal on a copper current collector, a lithium alloy anode, or a composite structure with lithium metal plated within it). In some examples, the anode can comprise a prelithiated silicon anode, a silicon-graphite composite anode, a prelithiated silicon-graphite composite anode, or a combination thereof. In some examples, the battery can comprise an anode-free cell architecture. Methods of making the solid state batteries are also included. For example, the method can comprise a dry chemical process in which the cathode and anode are produced separately and the solid electrolyte material and interlayer material are produced as freestanding films or membranes and the entire cell is “sandwiched” together. In some examples, the method can comprise an iterative wet chemical process where a cathode composite slurry is deposited on the cathode current collector and dried, then a slurry comprising the solid electrolyte and possibly a binding agent is deposited on the dried cathode and dried, and lastly the process is repeated for the interfacial layer before the anode is placed on top. A pressing step to adhere the anode to the cathode / electrolyte / interlayer preassembled sandwich can be applied to ensure a good interface between the cathode and electrolyte as well as the anode and interlayer.
