Abstract
Description
Light-emitting device, method for manufacturing the same, and electronic device including the light-emitting device Technical Field
[0001] The present disclosure relates to a light-emitting device and a method for manufacturing the same, as well as an electronic device including the light-emitting device. Background Art
[0002] Light-emitting devices such as light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are widely used in the fields of lighting and display. In related fields, functional layers in light-emitting devices can be prepared using methods such as inkjet printing.
[0003] In the prior art, the RGB sub-pixels in a pixel are often arranged in three rows, all in the form of long strips. As shown in Figure 7, sub-pixels 803, 805, and 807 are arranged side by side, separated by banks 801. However, as pixel density requirements increase, this arrangement requires the sub-pixel width to become relatively narrow, thus increasing the requirements for printing accuracy. In addition, the volume of ink between the banks becomes smaller, making it easier for the ink to overflow and cause color mixing.
[0004] Furthermore, as pixel density increases, the demand for printing precision becomes increasingly stringent. This forces some existing technologies to print along the width of the sub-pixel rather than along its length. However, this is problematic. On the one hand, a printhead with higher physical resolution may be required, with more nozzles corresponding to each sub-pixel. However, even this sometimes requires multiple prints to achieve higher precision, resulting in multiple alignment issues and reduced production efficiency. On the other hand, printing along narrow edges still poses challenges to printing precision and can easily cause color mixing.
[0005] Therefore, there is a need in the prior art for an improved light-emitting device, such as reducing the requirements for printing accuracy, increasing the aperture ratio, improving display performance and light uniformity, etc.

[0049] According to one aspect of the present disclosure, a light emitting device is provided. FIG1 shows a schematic top view of a light emitting device according to one embodiment of the present disclosure. It should be understood that the drawings only show some layers relevant to the embodiments of the present application, and omit other layers to avoid obscuring the main idea.
[0050] As shown in Figure 1, the light-emitting device 100 includes a substrate (first substrate) 101. There are multiple bottom electrode regions on the substrate 101, including a first bottom electrode region 103, a second bottom electrode region 105, and a third bottom electrode region 107. The first bottom electrode region 103, the second bottom electrode region 105, and the third bottom electrode region 107 can correspond to the light-emitting regions of the first, second, and third sub-pixels, respectively. Those skilled in the art will understand that the light-emitting region of a sub-pixel may include an area in the sub-pixel that is clamped between corresponding electrodes and can be driven to emit light by the corresponding electrodes (for example, an electrode region and a corresponding counter electrode). In some cases, it may also represent a three-dimensional area surrounded by a corresponding bank layer and a pixel definition layer.
[0051] Those skilled in the art will readily appreciate that the bottom electrode region may be at least a portion of the corresponding bottom electrode. In practical applications, the bottom electrode formed may include portions other than the bottom electrode regions indicated by 103, 105, and 107 in the figures, for example, as better seen from the cross-sectional views of Figures 5A and 5B. In the context of this application, generally, the term "bottom electrode region" is used to refer to the portion of the corresponding electrode in the light-emitting region of a pixel or sub-pixel (for example, the portion exposed in the opening of the pixel defining layer); alternatively, it may refer to the portion of the corresponding electrode in contact with the functional stack of the device (which includes the light-emitting layer). This portion is shown in Figures 1-5 and is indicated by the reference numerals 103, 105, and 107. Here, as an example, each bottom electrode region may be an anode.
[0052] As an example, the bottom electrode may include one or more layers of conductive material, for example, a stack of indium tin oxide (ITO) / silver (Ag) / ITO, or a stack of indium zinc oxide (IZO) / Ag / IZO. It should be understood that the present disclosure is not limited thereto. In some embodiments, the bottom electrodes corresponding to different sub-pixels are separately arranged. For example, the first bottom electrode, the second bottom electrode, and the third bottom electrode are independently arranged and disconnected from each other.
[0053] The first bottom electrode regions 103 and the second bottom electrode regions 105 are alternately arranged in a first direction, and the third bottom electrode region 107 is arranged substantially parallel to the first bottom electrode regions 103 and the second bottom electrode regions 105. As an example, the first direction may be the row direction or the column direction of the pixel array. In some embodiments of the present application, in the same pixel, the length of the third bottom electrode region in the first direction is set to be greater than the length of the corresponding first bottom electrode region, and greater than the length of the corresponding second bottom electrode region; in other embodiments of the present application, in the same pixel, the length of the third bottom electrode region 107 in the first direction may be set to be greater than the sum of the lengths of the corresponding first bottom electrode region 103 and the second bottom electrode region 105, as shown in FIG1 . Preferably, as shown in the figure, the bottom electrode region is chamfered; however, the present disclosure is not limited thereto.
[0054] In some embodiments, the first subpixel, the second subpixel, and the third subpixel each have different peak emission wavelengths. In some embodiments, the third subpixel may be a blue subpixel, the first subpixel may be one of a red subpixel and a green subpixel, and the second subpixel may be the other of the red subpixel and the green subpixel.
[0055] In some embodiments, the pixel in the light-emitting device may further include a fourth sub-pixel, and the peak emission wavelength of the fourth sub-pixel and the peak emission wavelengths of the first to third sub-pixels may be independently set. The bottom electrode region 409 (the fourth bottom electrode region) for the fourth sub-pixel may also be disposed in the third opening 207. The adjacent first to fourth sub-pixels form a pixel. In some embodiments, the peak emission wavelength of the fourth sub-pixel may be different from the peak emission wavelengths of the first, second, and third sub-pixels. In some other embodiments, the peak emission wavelength of the fourth sub-pixel may be substantially the same as the peak emission wavelength of one of the first, second, and third sub-pixels. For example, the peak emission wavelength of the fourth sub-pixel may be the same as that of the third sub-pixel. In this case, the bottom electrode region for the third sub-pixel and the bottom electrode region for the fourth sub-pixel in the same pixel may be controlled separately or jointly. In some embodiments, the length of the bottom electrode region 409 for the fourth sub-pixel may be set to be substantially equal to the length of the corresponding first bottom electrode region 103 and / or the second bottom electrode region 105. In some embodiments, in a top view, the first to fourth sub-pixels constituting a pixel may be arranged in a shape like the Chinese character "field", as shown in the dashed box indicated by 405 in FIG. 4B. Preferably, the peak emission wavelengths of the sub-pixels in the third opening are substantially the same, so as to simplify the manufacturing process and form a more uniform light-emitting layer. In some embodiments, the first bottom electrode region 103 and the second bottom electrode region 105 are configured to be symmetrically disposed with respect to the center line therebetween, and the two bottom electrode regions 107 and 109 corresponding to the third sub-pixel and the fourth sub-pixel, respectively, are also configured to be symmetrically disposed with respect to the center line.
[0056] In some embodiments, the light-emitting device 100 further includes: a pixel defining layer (PDL layer) 111 on the first substrate 101. As shown in FIG. 1, the pixel defining layer 111 may include a plurality of openings, as better shown in FIGS. 5A and 5B. The plurality of openings respectively expose the corresponding bottom electrode regions of the corresponding sub-pixels.
[0057] The light-emitting device 100 may further include a bank layer 109, as shown in FIG. 1. As shown in FIG. 1, the bank layer 109 may include a plurality of openings separated from each other. The plurality of openings of the bank layer may include a first opening 203, a second opening 205, and a third opening 207 (see FIG. 2), where the first opening 203, the second opening 205, and the third opening 207 expose the corresponding first bottom electrode region 103, the second bottom electrode region 105, and the third bottom electrode region 107. Therefore, the first opening 203 and the second opening 205 may be correspondingly configured to be alternately disposed in a first direction, and the third opening 207 may be configured to be disposed substantially parallel to the first opening 203 and the second opening 205. As an example, the bank layer may be formed of, for example, a photoresist or silicon oxide.
[0058] In some embodiments, the openings formed in the pixel defining layer are substantially aligned with corresponding openings formed in the bank layer, and the lateral dimensions of the openings formed in the pixel defining layer are smaller than the lateral dimensions of the corresponding openings formed in the bank layer. In some embodiments, in a top view, the openings formed in the pixel defining layer are contained within the corresponding openings formed in the bank layer.
[0059] Therefore, sub-pixels of different colors (correspondingly, the bottom electrode area) are separated by a bank layer. The thickness of the bank layer (relative to the surface of the bottom electrode facing away from the substrate) can be 0.5 microns to 2 microns; if it is too thin, it will not be able to confine the ink, while if it is too thick, it may affect the electrode overlap.
[0060] Figures 2 and 3 respectively show schematic top views of the light-emitting device 100 according to an embodiment of the present disclosure, with the pixel defining layer 111 and substrate 101 removed, to better illustrate the relationship between the bank layer 107 and the bottom electrode regions 103, 105, and 107. The thickness of the PDL can be set between 50nm and 500nm, or between 100nm and 300nm. The thickness of the PDL can be set from the aspects of ensuring uniform film formation, film density, and insulation.
[0061] The material of the PDL layer can be silicon nitride (SiNx), silicon oxide (SiOx), silicon oxynitride (SiOxNy), or a photoresist (such as a polyacrylate resin and / or a polyimide resin). Depending on the material used, the PDL layer can be prepared by, for example, sputtering, or by spin coating or coating, and then the excess portion can be removed by a patterning process (such as photolithography). In some embodiments, the material and preparation process of the bank layer can be similar to the material preparation process of the PDL layer.
[0062] The device 100 may further include a functional stack (not labeled, and not shown in Figures 1-3), which includes at least a light-emitting layer. As shown in Figures 5A and 5B, the functional stack may include a first stack portion 723 (corresponding to the first electrode region), a second stack portion (not labeled, corresponding to the second electrode region), and a third stack portion 727 (corresponding to the third electrode region). The first, second, and third stack portions are respectively disposed in the first to third openings of the bank layer 109 and are located above the corresponding bottom electrode regions 103, 105, and 107. Each stack portion includes at least a light-emitting layer.
[0063] According to some embodiments, at least the light-emitting layer of each stacked portion can be prepared by printing ink droplets along the same printing direction by a printing device and drying. Preferably, the printing direction can be set to be along the length direction of the third opening (that is, the length direction of the third bottom electrode area). The ink droplets may contain quantum dot (QD) materials, thereby forming a QLED display device. Although the embodiments of the present disclosure are particularly suitable for QLED devices, they can also be applied to other types of light-emitting / display devices, such as printed OLEDs.
[0064] In the embodiment shown in Figures 1-3, only one bottom electrode region 103 and 105 is provided in the openings 203 and 205, respectively. Compared with the solution of providing multiple bottom electrode regions in the openings 203 and 205, the former has an increased aperture ratio, and the pixels are still arranged in a regular order, which has a better effect on text and table display. In the opening 207, multiple third bottom electrode regions 107 are provided. Although two or three third bottom electrode regions 107 are shown as examples in the figure, it should be understood that more third bottom electrode regions 107 can be included. Since the thickness of the pixel defining layer is relatively low, during the preparation process, the same color ink on the multiple bottom electrode regions of the same opening can flow more fully and connect with each other, which helps to improve the uniformity of light emission. In addition, since the multiple bottom electrode regions are separated from each other, the independent light emission of the corresponding sub-pixels is not affected.
[0065] As shown in the figure, the first and second sub-pixels are arranged alternately in one row, while the third sub-pixel is distributed in another row. This allows for a wider pixel width, thereby reducing printing accuracy requirements and the risk of color crosstalk.
[0066] The following calculation formula illustrates this: 1 inch = 25,400 microns. The width of the bank structure in the bank layer is defined as b, and the spacing between adjacent bank structures within the same pixel is defined as e. Printing accuracy is determined by the width of the short side of the sub-pixel. In Figure 7, e = (25,400 / PPI - 3b) / 3 = 8,467 / PPI - b. In Figure 3, e1 = e2, resulting in e = (25,400 / PPI - 2b) / 2 = 12,700 / PPI - b. This shows that e can be designed to be wider, making printing easier, thereby lowering the precision requirements of the printing equipment and reducing equipment procurement costs. Assuming b is 10 microns and e is 30 microns (existing printing equipment can achieve this level of printing accuracy), according to the design in Figure 3, PPI = 12,700 / (e + b), resulting in a PPI of 317.5, which meets the requirements of small and medium-sized display devices. With the upgrading of printing equipment, even higher PPIs can be achieved.
[0067] In addition, as shown in the figure, no bank layer is provided between multiple third bottom electrode regions 107 in a row, and only the pixel defining layer (PDL) is required for isolation. Since the sub-pixels in this row are of the same color, there is no need for a pixel isolation structure (such as a bank) in the middle, thereby improving the pixel aperture ratio. In addition, since one or more functional layers (especially the light-emitting layer) of all the third sub-pixels in a row can communicate with each other, the ink used to form the functional layer can freely flow in the long strip area of the opening 207. Therefore, the ink distribution is uniform, the film layer thickness is uniform, and the light-emitting uniformity is improved.
[0068] In addition, in this embodiment, the third bottom electrode region 107 is disposed adjacent to and parallel to the first bottom electrode region 103 and the second bottom electrode region 105, and the length of the third bottom electrode region 107 can be set to be greater than the sum of the lengths of the corresponding first bottom electrode region 103 and the second bottom electrode region 105. Preferably, the third sub-pixel is a blue sub-pixel. Generally, the luminous efficiency of the red sub-pixel is relatively high, the luminous efficiency of the green sub-pixel is also relatively high, while the luminous efficiency of the blue sub-pixel is relatively low. Thus, the luminous area of the blue sub-pixel can be increased to make the pixel color display balanced. In some embodiments, in the same pixel, the sizes of the luminous regions of the red and green sub-pixels can be substantially equal, and the size of the luminous region of the blue sub-pixel can be twice or more that of the red or green sub-pixel.
[0069] In some embodiments, in the same pixel, the first bottom electrode region 103 and the second bottom electrode region 105 are configured to be symmetrically disposed with respect to the center line 201 (see FIG. 2) therebetween, and the third bottom electrode region 107 is also configured to be symmetrically disposed with respect to the center line 201.
[0070] Preferably, in the same pixel, the widths of the first bottom electrode region 103, the second bottom electrode region 105, and the third bottom electrode region 107 are configured to be substantially equal. In other embodiments, in the same pixel, the widths of the first bottom electrode region and the second bottom electrode region are configured to be substantially equal, and the width of the third bottom electrode region is configured to be greater than the width of the first bottom electrode region to increase the lifespan of the blue sub-pixel.
[0071] It should also be understood that in FIG. 1, only two or three columns of pixels in a row are schematically shown. In fact, many rows and columns of pixels (and sub-pixels) can be formed on the substrate, as shown in FIG. 4A, which shows the openings (and corresponding electrode regions) of multiple rows. In addition, as indicated by the dashed box 401 in FIG. 4A, each pixel includes three sub-pixels arranged in the Chinese character "pin" shape. As indicated by the dashed box 405 in FIG. 4B, each pixel includes four sub-pixels arranged in the Chinese character "tian" shape.
[0072] In some embodiments, a light-emitting device may include a pixel array having a plurality of pixels, wherein the plurality of pixels may be arranged in an array in a first direction (e.g., a row direction) and a second direction (e.g., a column direction) perpendicular to the first direction. The pixel may be a pixel as described in the previous embodiment, including: a corresponding first sub-pixel, a second sub-pixel, and a third sub-pixel; a corresponding first bottom electrode region, a second bottom electrode region, and a third bottom electrode region corresponding to the corresponding first sub-pixel, second sub-pixel, and third sub-pixel; and first, second, and third stacked layer portions above the corresponding first bottom electrode region, second bottom electrode region, and third bottom electrode region.
[0073] In some embodiments, as shown in Figure 2, the size of the first bottom electrode area 103 (correspondingly, the light-emitting area of the first sub-pixel) can be set to the same size as the second bottom electrode area 105 (correspondingly, the light-emitting area of the second sub-pixel), so that the printing process can be simplified. As shown in Figure 2, the width of the bottom electrode area 103 / 105 can be W1, and the length can be L1. In some embodiments, L1 can be set to be substantially equal to W1, so that the bottom electrode area can be set to a basic square, which can improve the uniform spreading of ink droplets and the uniform luminescence of the light-emitting layer. The basic square or basic rectangle can have chamfers. The width of the bottom electrode area 107 can be W2, and the length can be L2. In some embodiments, W1 can be equal to W2. L2 can be set to be greater than the sum of the lengths of the bottom electrode areas 103 and 105, for example, greater than 2L1.
[0074] As shown in Figure 3, the bottom electrode region 103 (correspondingly, the first sub-pixel) and the bottom electrode region 105 (correspondingly, the second sub-pixel) are separated by a bank layer, and the width of the bank layer between the two is a. The bottom electrode region 103 / 105 and the bottom electrode region 107 (correspondingly, the third sub-pixel) are separated by a bank layer, and the width of the bank layer between the two is b. In different embodiments, widths a and b may be the same or different. The bottom electrode regions 103 / 105 / 107 are set to be separated from the banks around them. In this embodiment, the separation distances between the bottom electrode regions 103 / 105 / 107 and the corresponding banks are configured to be the same, both c; however, in other embodiments, the separation distances between the bottom electrode regions 103 / 105 / 107 and the corresponding banks may be configured to be different from each other. Figure 3 also shows that in the same opening 207, the distance between the third bottom electrode regions 107 is d.
[0075] As an example, the widths a and b of the bank layers between sub-pixels of different colors (corresponding to bottom electrode regions or light-emitting regions) are preferably 5 to 20 microns, for example, 8 microns, 10 microns, 11 microns, 15 microns, etc. The narrower a and b are, the better, provided that the process is feasible. In addition, the width of the bank between two sub-pixels in the same row, such as the red and green sub-pixels, can be set to be narrower than the width of the bank between the red and green sub-pixels and the corresponding blue sub-pixels. This is because there is no need to consider filling the drain hole between the red and green sub-pixels in the same row, while the bank between the red and green sub-pixels and the blue sub-pixel needs to consider filling the drain hole with bank material (not shown in the figure). Therefore, the width of this part of the bank is preferably set slightly wider.
[0076] As an example, the distance c is preferably greater than 0 and less than or equal to 10 microns. If c is 0, meaning no distance is left, edge effects may cause the thickness of the edge pixels to be thicker, leading to uneven light emission. On the other hand, as the value of c increases, the aperture ratio decreases.
[0077] As an example, the distance d between the bottom electrode regions in the same opening (for example, the third bottom electrode region 107 in the opening 207) is preferably 3 μm to 20 μm. The selection of the distance d should consider, on the one hand, ensuring that the electrode is etched and broken, and on the other hand, considering the aperture ratio. Increasing the distance d will reduce the aperture ratio.
[0078] According to embodiments of the present disclosure, sub-pixels of different colors (correspondingly, bottom electrode regions) are separated by a bank layer. According to some embodiments of the present disclosure, within the opening for sub-pixels of the same color (e.g., red or green sub-pixels), except for the light-emitting area, the entire area is covered with a pixel definition layer (PDL). In addition, by configuring the PDL layer, the light-emitting area of the sub-pixel is isolated from the bank layer, thereby reducing or eliminating the impact of defects at the edge of the printed layer (e.g., warping, capillary effect) on performance, thereby achieving uniform light emission.
[0079] As an example, the examples shown in Figures 1-3 are applicable to display device settings with any pixel density below 300PPI or even above 300PPI, for example, 240PPI, 200PPI or 150PPI. Compared with the pixel configuration of the prior art shown in Figure 8, under the same parameters such as the width of the bank between pixels and the distance between the bottom electrode and the adjacent bank, the embodiments of the present disclosure can achieve the same pixel density (pixels per inch, PPI) with a wider sub-pixel width. This reduces the requirements for printing accuracy and allows the ink to flow and distribute more evenly in the opening, thereby improving the uniformity of the display.
[0080] In addition, compared with the prior art (as shown in FIG7 ), at the same pixel density, a higher aperture ratio can be achieved according to the embodiments of the present disclosure. In some specific embodiments, when both are 150PPI, the aperture ratio of the examples of the present invention is increased by about 7% compared with the prior art. When both are 200PPI, the aperture ratio of the examples of the present invention is increased by about 13% compared with the prior art. In some embodiments, the aperture ratio of the light-emitting device can reach more than 50%. The increase in the aperture ratio makes it possible to use a lower current density to power the pixels, thereby improving the brightness, lifespan and other performance of the device. As the pixel density increases, the improvement in the aperture ratio of the present invention relative to the prior art will be even greater.
[0081] Figure 4A shows a schematic top view of a portion of a light emitting device according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. Figures 5A and 5B show schematic cross-sectional views of a light emitting device according to an embodiment of the present disclosure.
[0082] As shown in FIG4A , the first to fifth rows are shown. In the first, third, and fifth rows, first openings 203 and second openings 205 are alternately arranged. In the second and fourth rows, third openings 207 are shown, each of which has a plurality of third bottom electrode regions 107 disposed therein. It should be noted that the "first row" to "fifth row" marked here refer to the openings, not the pixels.
[0083] In this embodiment, preferably, each first bottom electrode region 103 is configured to be substantially square, each second bottom electrode region 105 is configured to be substantially square, and each third bottom electrode region 107 is configured to be substantially rectangular. Preferably, in the same pixel, the widths of the first bottom electrode region 103, the second bottom electrode region 105, and the third bottom electrode region 107 are configured to be substantially equal. In other embodiments, in the same pixel, the widths of the first bottom electrode region and the second bottom electrode region are configured to be substantially equal, and the width of the third bottom electrode region is configured to be greater than the width of the first bottom electrode region, so as to increase the lifespan of the blue sub-pixel.
[0084] As shown in FIG4A , the bank layer further includes a fourth opening 403 (e.g., the opening 403 in the second row, which is equivalent to a copy of the third opening 207). Similar to the third opening 207, a plurality of third bottom electrode regions 107 are also formed in the fourth opening 403. The fourth opening is arranged substantially parallel to the third opening (e.g., the opening 207 in the fourth row), with the row in which the first opening 203 and the second opening 205 are alternately arranged being arranged therebetween.
[0085] In the fourth opening, a plurality of third bottom electrode regions 107 are separated by the pixel defining layer. Similarly, the third bottom electrode region 107 and the first bottom electrode region 103 and the second bottom electrode region 105 disposed on the same side and adjacent to the third bottom electrode region 107 are configured for the same pixel.
[0086] FIG4B shows a schematic top view of a portion of a light-emitting device according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. As shown in FIG4B , the first to fifth rows are shown. In the first, third, and fifth rows, the first openings 203 and the second openings 205 are alternately arranged. In the second and fourth rows, third openings 207 are shown, respectively, in which a plurality of third bottom electrode regions 107 and fourth bottom electrode regions 409 are arranged. It should be noted that the “first row” to “fifth row” marked here refer to the openings, not to the pixels (or sub-pixels).
[0087] In this embodiment, preferably, each first bottom electrode region 103 is configured to be substantially square, each second bottom electrode region 105 is configured to be substantially square, and the third bottom electrode region 107 and the fourth bottom electrode region 409 are configured to be substantially rectangular. Preferably, in the same pixel, the width of the first bottom electrode region 103, the width of the second bottom electrode region 105, the width of the third bottom electrode region 107, and the width of the fourth bottom electrode region are configured to be substantially equal. Preferably, the width of the third bottom electrode region 107 and the width of the fourth bottom electrode region are configured to be substantially equal. In other embodiments, in the same pixel, the width of the first bottom electrode region and the width of the second bottom electrode region are configured to be substantially equal, and the widths of the third bottom electrode region and the fourth bottom electrode region are configured to be greater than the width of the first bottom electrode region to increase the lifespan of the corresponding sub-pixel.
[0088] As shown in FIG4B , the bank layer further includes a fourth opening 403 (e.g., the opening 403 in the second row, which is equivalent to a copy of the third opening 207). Similar to the third opening 207, a plurality of third bottom electrode regions 107 and a plurality of fourth bottom electrode regions 409 are also formed in the fourth opening 403. The fourth opening is arranged substantially parallel to the third opening (e.g., the opening 207 in the fourth row), wherein the row in which the first opening 203 and the second opening 205 are alternately arranged is arranged between the two.
[0089] In the third and fourth openings, the pixel defining layer separates the plurality of third bottom electrode regions 107, the plurality of fourth bottom electrode regions 409, and the third bottom electrode regions 107 and the fourth bottom electrode region 409. Adjacent first bottom electrode regions 103, second bottom electrode regions 105, third bottom electrode regions 107, and fourth bottom electrode regions 409 can be configured for the same pixel, as shown in FIG4B .
[0090] Although the lengths of the third bottom electrode region 107 and the fourth bottom electrode region 409 are shown as being substantially equal in FIG4B , the present disclosure is not limited thereto. For example, in some embodiments, the length of the third bottom electrode region 107 may be set to be longer or shorter than the length of the fourth bottom electrode region 409, depending on the application.
[0091] 4B , the lengths of the third bottom electrode region 107 and the fourth bottom electrode region 409 are shown as being arranged alternately, however, the present disclosure is not limited thereto. For example, the third bottom electrode region 107 may be arranged symmetrically with respect to the center line of the corresponding first bottom electrode region 103 and second bottom electrode region 105, while the fourth bottom electrode region 409 may be arranged on one side or both sides of the third bottom electrode region 107.
[0092] As an example, the widths a and b of the bank layers between sub-pixels of different colors (corresponding to bottom electrode regions or light-emitting regions) are each preferably 5 to 20 microns, for example, 8 microns, 10 microns, 11 microns, etc. The width of the bank between two sub-pixels in the same row (e.g., red and green sub-pixels) can be set to be narrower than the width of the bank between the red and green sub-pixels and the corresponding blue sub-pixel. This is because the drain hole does not need to be filled between the red and green sub-pixels in the same row, while the bank between the red and green sub-pixels and the blue sub-pixel needs to be filled with bank material to fill the drain hole. Therefore, the width of this portion of the bank is preferably set slightly wider.
[0093] As an example, the distance c between the bottom electrode region (luminescent region) of a sub-pixel and the adjacent bank layer is preferably greater than 0 and less than or equal to 10 microns, for example, 5 microns. If the distance c is 0, that is, no gap is left, there may be an edge effect causing the thickness of the pixel area on the edge to be thicker, resulting in uneven light emission. On the other hand, as the value of c increases, the aperture ratio decreases.
[0094] As an example, the distance d between the bottom electrode regions in the same opening is preferably 3 to 20 microns, such as 8 microns, 10 microns, 11 microns, etc. The selection of distance d should consider, on the one hand, ensuring that the electrode is etched and broken, and on the other hand, the aperture ratio. Increasing the distance d will reduce the aperture ratio.
[0095] In this embodiment, similar to the previous embodiments, at least the light-emitting layers of each laminated portion can be prepared by printing ink droplets along the same printing direction and drying them. Preferably, the printing direction is along the length of the third opening. Preferably, the ink droplets can contain quantum dot (QD) material, thereby forming a QLED display device. Although the embodiments of the present disclosure are particularly applicable to QLED devices, they can also be applied to other types of light-emitting / display devices.
[0096] The light-emitting device according to this embodiment can be applied to display devices with any pixel density of 300 PPI or higher, such as 360 PPI, 400 PPI, or even higher. Here, there is no limitation on the pixel density of the display device used, and those skilled in the art can easily design according to actual needs based on the principles of this disclosure.
[0097] Figures 5A and 5B show schematic cross-sectional views of a light-emitting device along line AA' in Figure 4 according to different embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown in Figure 5A, the light-emitting device may include a base substrate 701, which may be a glass substrate or a plastic substrate having excellent mechanical strength, thermal stability, transparency, surface smoothness, ease of operation, and waterproofness. A gate electrode 702 for a thin film transistor (TFT) is formed on the substrate 701. A gate dielectric layer 703 is formed on the substrate 701 and the gate electrode 702. A semiconductor layer 704 is arranged opposite to the gate electrode via the dielectric layer 703. The semiconductor layer 704 may be formed of, for example, single crystal silicon, polycrystalline silicon, low temperature polycrystalline silicon LTPS, low temperature polycrystalline oxide LTPO, an oxide semiconductor, a doped oxide semiconductor, and the like. An interlayer dielectric layer 705 covers the semiconductor layer 704. Source and drain electrodes (and contacts, if necessary) 706 are formed on the interlayer dielectric layer 705 and form contact with the semiconductor layer 704 through the interlayer dielectric layer 705. Then, an optional passivation layer 707 and a planarization layer 709 are formed thereon to cover the source and drain electrodes, and to form through holes 710 to the source and drain electrodes. Here, the substrate on which the TFTs and corresponding layers are formed may also be referred to as a lower substrate, a TFT substrate, or a first substrate.
[0098] It should be understood that the configuration described above is merely exemplary and the present disclosure may be adapted for use with TFT substrates of various configurations.
[0099] FIG5A shows that a plurality of electrodes (bottom electrodes or first electrodes) 103 'and 107 'are formed on the TFT substrate (on the planarization layer 709), and the bottom electrodes 103 'and 107 'respectively include a first bottom electrode region 103 and a third bottom electrode region 107. In the embodiment shown in FIG5 , as an example, one of the first bottom electrode regions 103 is shown as being connected to one of the source-drain electrodes 706 to illustrate the control of the bottom electrode (i.e., the corresponding bottom electrode region) by the corresponding TFT. The present disclosure is not limited thereto. There may be a plurality of TFTs to respectively control the corresponding bottom electrodes (and corresponding bottom electrode regions).
[0100] As shown in FIG5A , a patterned bank layer 109 is formed to form isolation between sub-pixels of different colors. As previously described, the bank layer 109 has first to third openings. In the present embodiment, a patterned pixel definition layer (PDL) 111 is also formed on the bank layer 109 and the TFT substrate. The PDL layer 111 forms an opening at the set light-emitting area of the sub-pixel to define the light-emitting area. The bottom electrodes 103 'and 107' are partially covered by the PDL layer 111, and their areas at the openings in the light-emitting area are exposed, thereby forming, for example, the aforementioned bottom electrode regions 103 and 107. The same is true for the bottom electrode region 105, although the bottom electrode region 105 is not shown in FIG5A .
[0101] Although the pixel defining layer 111 is shown as being formed on the bank layer 109 in FIG5A , the present disclosure is not limited thereto, as long as the pixel defining layer 111 can expose the corresponding bottom electrode region and define the light-emitting area of the sub-pixel. In some embodiments, the bank layer 109 can be formed on the pixel defining layer 111, as shown in FIG5B .
[0102] Afterwards, a functional stack is formed, that is, a stack of functional layers. FIG5A shows a plurality of parts 721, 723, etc. of the functional stack. The functional stack includes at least a light-emitting layer, such as a QD light-emitting layer. In some embodiments, the functional stack may further include (but is not limited to) at least one of the following: a hole injection layer, a hole transport layer, a hole blocking layer, an electron injection layer, an electron transport layer, an electron blocking layer, and a buffer layer. In the context of the present disclosure, the functional stack may include any layer in the light-emitting device that has an effect on the luminescence or luminescent performance of the device except for the electrode layer, the PDL layer, and the bank layer. In other words, the functional stack may include any and all layers that can be arranged in the light-emitting region of the light-emitting device, between the bottom electrode region and the top electrode.
[0103] FIG5B shows an embodiment in which the bank layer 109 is formed on the pixel defining layer 111 . Other components are the same as or consistent with those in FIG5A , and thus repeated description thereof is omitted.
[0104] In an embodiment of the present disclosure, for example, ink droplets containing a material for forming a functional layer are jetted onto the substrate in the region between the banks 109 via a nozzle, thereby forming a functional layer, such as a light-emitting layer. In some embodiments, at least the light-emitting layer can be formed by inkjet printing, and other functional layers can be formed by methods such as deposition, sputtering, or coating.
[0105] According to an embodiment of the present disclosure, compared with the prior art, at the same pixel density, the width of the sub-pixel is increased, the width between the banks is increased, and the requirements for printing accuracy are reduced. In addition, the ink can flow freely and fully in the opening area, so that the ink distribution is uniform, the film thickness is uniform, and the luminous uniformity is improved. According to an embodiment of the present disclosure, a high aperture ratio can also be maintained, the luminous performance is improved, and the device life is increased. According to an embodiment of the present disclosure, sub-pixels of different colors (correspondingly, the bottom electrode area) are separated by a bank layer. According to some embodiments of the present disclosure, in the opening for sub-pixels of the same color (for example, red or green sub-pixels), except for the luminous area, other places are covered with a pixel definition layer (PDL). In addition, by configuring the PDL layer, the luminous area of the sub-pixel is isolated from the bank layer, thereby reducing or eliminating the effects of defects at the edge of the printed layer (for example, warping, capillary effect) on the performance, so that the luminous uniformity is achieved.
[0106] The light-emitting device may further include an electrode (a second electrode, a top electrode, not shown in the figure) located above the functional stack, such as a cathode. As needed, in some implementations, the second electrode may be a whole-sheet electrode (or a blanket electrode) that covers the functional layers of multiple pixels (including sub-pixels). However, the present disclosure is not limited thereto. In some implementations, the second electrode may be configured to allow light emitted by the light-emitting layer to be transmitted therethrough.
[0107] The top electrode may be formed of one or more layers of conductive material. For example, the top electrode may be formed of Ag, magnesium-silver (Mg-Ag) alloy, conductive metal oxide, or a conductive metal oxide stacked structure (such as ITO, IZO, or IZO / Ag / IZO).
[0108] The light-emitting device may further include an encapsulation portion located at the top electrode, and the encapsulation portion may include: an inorganic film including silicon nitride (SiNx), silicon oxide (SiOx), indium tin oxide, indium zinc oxide, or any combination thereof; an organic film including polyethylene terephthalate, polyethylene naphthalate, polycarbonate, polyimide, polyethylene sulfonate, polyoxymethylene, polyarylate, hexamethyldisiloxane, acrylic resin (e.g., polymethyl methacrylate, polyacrylic acid and / or the like), epoxy resin (e.g., aliphatic glycidyl ether (AGE) and / or the like), or any combination thereof; or any combination of an inorganic film and an organic film.
[0109] FIG6 shows a schematic flowchart of a method for manufacturing a light emitting device according to another embodiment of the present disclosure.
[0110] As shown in FIG6 , in step S601, a first substrate is provided having a plurality of bottom electrode regions thereon. The plurality of bottom electrode regions include a first bottom electrode region, a second bottom electrode region, and a third bottom electrode region corresponding to the first, second, and third sub-pixels, respectively. The first bottom electrode regions and the second bottom electrode regions are alternately arranged in a first direction, and the third bottom electrode region is arranged substantially parallel to the first bottom electrode region and the second bottom electrode region.
[0111] In step S603 , a pixel definition layer is formed. The pixel definition layer includes a plurality of openings. The plurality of openings respectively expose corresponding bottom electrode regions of corresponding sub-pixels.
[0112] In step S605 , a bank layer is formed. The bank layer includes a plurality of openings separated from each other. The plurality of openings in the bank layer include first, second, and third openings.
[0113] The plurality of openings in the pixel defining layer correspond to the corresponding openings in the bank layer and extend inward relative to the corresponding openings in the bank layer, as shown in Figures 5A and 5B. In other words, as shown in the top views of Figures 1-4, the plurality of openings in the pixel defining layer are respectively in the corresponding openings in the bank layer.
[0114] In step S607, a functional stack is formed, which includes first, second and third stack portions, which are respectively arranged in the first to third openings and located above corresponding bottom electrode regions, and each stack portion includes at least a light-emitting layer.
[0115] It should be noted that the steps of forming the pixel defining layer and the steps of forming the bank layer and their order are merely exemplary, and in other embodiments, the order of the two may be reversed, as shown in FIG. 5A and FIG. 5B .
[0116] The embodiments or examples described above can be freely combined, and the resulting embodiments are also within the scope of the present disclosure. The contents described above for the embodiments shown in Figures 1-5 can be applied similarly or adaptively to the method embodiments, and will not be repeated here.
[0117] In some embodiments, the height of the ink forming the light-emitting layer may be higher than or lower than the PDL.
[0118] The present disclosure also contemplates an electronic device comprising a light emitting device as described in accordance with any embodiment of the disclosure and as readily apparent from the present disclosure. In some embodiments, the electronic device may be a large electronic device, such as a television, a monitor, and / or an outdoor billboard. In other embodiments, the electronic device may be a small or medium-sized electronic device, such as a personal computer, a laptop computer, a personal digital assistant, a car navigation system, a game console, a smartphone, a tablet computer, and / or a camera.
