Abstract

Example embodiments of the present disclosure relate to transmission and reception point (TRP) selection for artificial intelligence (AI) / machine learning (ML) positioning. In an aspect, a terminal device receives, from a network device, an AI / ML model for positioning. The AI / ML model is maintained to be applicable to different TRP combinations of a variable number of TRPs. The terminal device then determines, based on the AI / ML model and from a set of TRPs available for positioning the terminal device, a subset of TRPs for positioning the terminal device. And then the terminal device transmits, to the network device, information indicative of the subset of TRPs. According to some embodiments of the present disclosure, the number of TRPs for positioning the terminal device are reduced while the positioning accuracy is almost not reduced.

[0045] The term “terminal device” refers to any end device that may be capable of wireless communication. By way of example rather than limitation, a terminal device may also be referred to as a communication device, user equipment (UE) , a Subscriber Station (SS) , a Portable Subscriber Station, a Mobile Station (MS) , or an Access Terminal (AT) . The terminal device may include, but not limited to, a mobile phone, a cellular phone, a smart phone, voice over IP (VoIP) phones, wireless local loop phones, a tablet, a wearable terminal device, a personal digital assistant (PDA) , portable computers, desktop computer, image  capture terminal devices such as digital cameras, gaming terminal devices, music storage and playback appliances, vehicle-mounted wireless terminal devices, wireless endpoints, mobile stations, laptop-embedded equipment (LEE) , laptop-mounted equipment (LME) , USB dongles, smart devices, wireless customer-premises equipment (CPE) , an Internet of Things (loT) device, a watch or other wearable, a head-mounted display (HMD) , a vehicle, a drone, a medical device and applications (for example, remote surgery) , an industrial device and applications (for example, a robot and / or other wireless devices operating in an industrial and / or an automated processing chain contexts) , a consumer electronics device, a device operating on commercial and / or industrial wireless networks, and the like. In the following description, the terms “terminal device” , “communication device” , “terminal” , “user equipment” and “UE” may be used interchangeably.

[0046] Reference is first made to FIG. 1, which illustrates an example of communication system in which some example embodiments of the present disclosure may be implemented. As shown in FIG. 1, the communication network 100 includes a terminal device 110, a network device 120, and a group of network devices 130-1 and 130-2. The network device 120 may be a network device in the core network, for example, an LMF, which may be referred to as the core network (CN) device 120. The network devices 130-1 and 130-2 may be base stations or transmission and reception points (TRPs) for providing radio coverage to the terminal device 110, which may be collectively referred to as the TRPs 130.

[0047] It is to be understood that the number of the terminal device 110, the number of the CN device 120 and the number of the TRPs 130 as shown in the communication network 100 are only for the purpose of illustration, without any limitation to the scope of the present disclosure. In some example embodiments, the communication network 100 may include any number of terminal devices, any number of TRPs and / or any number of CN devices.

[0048] With communicating positioning signals between the terminal device 110 and the TRPs 130, based on the coordination and management of the CN device 120, a physical position of the terminal device 110 may be estimated. For example, AI / ML positioning may be used to estimate the physical location of the terminal device 110.

[0049] From a standardization perspective, 3GPP Release 18 has approved to study the benefits of augmenting the air-interface by the latest advances in the field of AI / ML positioning in RP-213599, “New SI: Study on Artificial Intelligence (AI)  / Machine Learning (ML) for NR Air Interface” , and AI / ML positioning accuracy enhancement is regarded as  one of the three most representative use cases. In RAN1 #109 meeting, the fingerprint-based direct AI / ML positioning has been considered to be an important aspect for further study. This is shown in the following table 1.

[0050] Table 1

[0051] In the 3GPP RAN1 #112 discussion (Final Report of 3GPP TSG RAN WG1 #112 v1.0.0) , companies have agreed to consider channel impulse response (CIR)  / power delay profile (PDP) as candidate model inputs for AI / ML positioning. Companies also agree to study the specification impact on the new model input, with respect to the trade-off among model performance, model complexity and computational complexity, as shown in the following table 2.

[0052] Table 2

[0053] In the latest 3GPP RAN1 #112-e meeting (Final Report of 3GPP TSG RAN WG1 #112-e v1.0.0) , companies have agreed to evaluate the performance, overhead, and complexity for model input size of different approaches, as shown in the following table 3.

[0054] Table 3

[0055] In a recent contribution (R1-2302634, “Evaluation on ML for positioning accuracy enhancement” ) , some important observation is presented that with reduced number of TRP  used for positioning, computational complexity can be saved accordingly, meanwhile leading to certain degree of inference accuracy drops. The following table 4 (R1-2302634, “Evaluation on ML for positioning accuracy enhancement” ) shows an evaluation for different number of TRPs (N_TRPs) considering an arbitrarily TRPs selection and compared with their respective model complexity and computational complexity, wherein the input parameter was PDP, the N’t =128, and the UE distribution area = 120x60 m.

[0056] Table 4

[0057] Similar results have also been disclosed in another recent contribution (R1-2304475, “Evaluation on AI / ML for positioning accuracy enhancement” ) , where it is proposed that the TRP number can be considerably reduced and positioning accuracy barely drops. There has been no detailed technical exposure, but it’s reasonable to attributes it to the correlation / redundancy among TRPs. The following table 5 (R1-2304475, “Evaluation on AI / ML for positioning accuracy enhancement” ) shows an evaluation results for AI / ML model deployed on the UE or network side, wherein the UE distribution area = [120x60 m] .

[0058] Table 5

[0059] A consensus has been reached amongst key vendors on the TRP efficiency, that is using CIR / PDP measurement from a small portion TRPs (i.e., N’TRP out of overall NTRP TRPs, where N’TRP can be 4, and NTRP is 18) can already give sufficiently good positioning estimation accuracy, e.g., from various companies’proposals.

[0060] In most state-of-the-art solutions, using partial set of gross TRPs (N’TRP out of NTRP) positioning solutions are trained and tested on a fixed combination of sub-set of TRPs, that is, the trained model can neither be used for a different number of TRP-combinations, nor be used for “the same number of TRPs but with different combinations” .

[0061] For example, an AI / ML positioning model has been developed to cover various TRP patterns for a fixed number of TRPs N’TRP ( TRP patterns) in their 3GPP contribution, R1-2304475, “Evaluation on AI / ML for positioning accuracy enhancement” . The following table 6 (R1-2304475, “Evaluation on AI / ML for positioning accuracy enhancement” ) shows an evaluation results for AI / ML model deployed on the UE or network side, wherein the UE distribution area = [120x60 m] .

[0062] Table 6

[0063] However, as is presented in Table 6, for a fixed TRP number (e.g., 9 for N’TRP) , different combination of TRPs impacts inference accuracy, especially when the TRP pattern  is randomly selected. Meanwhile, the fixed TRP pattern has still not reach the global optimal. Herein, the following questions remaining unsolved are summarized.

[0064] The first question is how to determine which TRPs should be selected to form a most suitable TRP sub-set. For example, it is unclear whether it is possible to rank the TRPs in a significance order. The second question is if with the TRP significance ranking, how to determine the minimum TRP number to satisfy the positioning accuracy requirement. The third question is what are the standardization impact and the corresponding signaling on the TRP selection. In all abovementioned 3GPP contributions, the above problems have not been touched yet.

[0065] In view of the above, 3-folds of problem need to be addressed. First, there has been no solution and assessment mechanism yet on how to adaptively determine whether CIR / PDP from multiple TRPs are redundant or whether TRP number in CIR / PDP can be reduced with least positioning accuracy deterioration. In addition, there has been no solution yet on which TRPs are more significant than other and should be selected out to sustain mostly the positioning accuracy at a minimal cost of overhead of measurement and convey. Furthermore, since typical direct AI / ML positioning model is with a rigid input size (NTRP *Nport *Nt) , accommodating CIR / PDP from different TRP numbers and combinations requires multiple AI / ML models, making memory intensive to store multiple models for different combination of TRPs.

[0066] Accordingly, some embodiments of the present disclosure provide a solution for AI / ML positioning with a minimal cost of overhead of measurement and convey while sustaining a desired positioning accuracy. According to some embodiments of the present disclosure, a terminal device receives, from a network device, an AI / ML model for positioning. The AI / ML model is maintained, by the network device, to be applicable to different TRP combinations of a variable number of TRPs. The terminal device determines, based on the AI / ML model and from a set of TRPs available for positioning the terminal device, a subset of TRPs for positioning the terminal device. Then, the terminal device transmits, to the network device, information indicative of the subset of TRPs. After receiving the information indicative of the subset of TRPs, the network device transmits, to the subset of TRPs, a request for transmitting, to the terminal device, at least one signal for positioning the terminal device. In this way, the number of TRPs for positioning the terminal device are reduced while the positioning accuracy is almost not reduced.

[0067] FIG. 2 illustrates a flowchart illustrating a communication process 200 in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the communication process 200 will be described with reference to FIG. 1. It would be appreciated that although the communication process 200 has been described referring to the network environment 100 of FIG. 1, this communication process 200 may be likewise applied to other similar communication scenarios.

[0068] As shown in FIG. 2, a network device 120 maintains 205 an artificial intelligence (AI)  / machine learning (ML) model for positioning to be applicable to different TRP combinations of a variable number of TRPs. Then, the network device 120 transmits 210 the AI / ML model 212 to a terminal device 110. After receiving 215 the AI / ML model, the terminal device 110 determines 220, based on the AI / ML model and from a set of TRPs available for positioning the terminal device 110, a subset of TRPs for positioning the terminal device. Then, the terminal device 110 transmits 225, to the network device 120, information 228 indicative of the subset of TRPs. After receiving 230 the information indicative of the subset of TRPs, the network device 120 transmits 235, to the TRPs 130 included in the subset of TRPs, a request 238 for transmitting, to the terminal device, at least one signal for positioning, such that the TRPs 130 may, in response of receiving 240 the request 238, transmit positioning signals to the terminal device 110 for performing AI / ML positioning.

[0069] The above term “TRP combinations of a variable number of TRPs” may also be referred to as “TRP patterns” . One TRP pattern corresponds to one subset of TRPs. Different TRP patterns mean different numbers of TRPs and / or different TRP combinations. That is to say, to determine a TRP pattern, it should be determined how many TRPs and which TRPs should be included in the subset of TRPs corresponding to the TRP pattern to be determined.

[0070] In some embodiments, the network device 120 may be an LMF. In some embodiments, signals for positioning transmitted by TRPs may be CIR signals and / or PDP signals. In some embodiments, an AI / ML model which is applicable to different TRP patterns may be referred to as a unified-TRP-pattern AI / ML positioning model or a unified-TRP-pattern model. Since an LMF is able to receive and store CIR / PDP data from various TRP patterns, the unified-TRP-pattern model may be located at LMF side. In other words, the LMF may maintain a unified-TRP-pattern AI / ML positioning model accommodating the input CIR / PDP from various TRP patterns from a variable number of TRPs.

[0071] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may first transmit a request for the AI / ML model to the network device 120. In response to the request, the network device 120 may then transmit the AI / ML model to the terminal device 110.

[0072] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may monitor a first output of the AI / ML model with model input of measurements provided by the set of TRPs. Based on the monitoring, the terminal device 110 may determine whether a positioning accuracy of the first output meets a requirement of positioning accuracy. That is to say, the terminal device 110 may monitor the positioning inference performance of the AI / ML model whose input is provided by the set of TRPs (i.e. the holistic TRP set) . If the monitoring indicator is beyond satisfactory (beyond a desired positioning accuracy) , it means that the AI / ML model with input provided by the set of TRPs works well and the TRP number can be reduced for positioning, and in this case, it makes sense to perform the TRP selection. It may be understood that some conventional methods may be adopted for the monitoring, e.g., the statistic-measurement-based model monitoring method.

[0073] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine the subset of TRPs further based on a requirement of positioning accuracy. For example, in order to determine the subset of TRPs, the terminal device 110 may first determine a first result of positioning inference by the AI / ML model for the set of TRPs (i.e. the holistic TRP set) , and determine a second result of positioning inference by the AI / ML model for TRPs selected from the set of TRPs. And then the terminal device 110 may compare the second result with the first result, to determine a difference between them. Based on the difference between the first result and the second result, the terminal device 110 may determine whether a number of the TRPs selected from the set of TRPs is to be increased. For example, the terminal device 110 may compare the difference with a threshold. If the difference is above the threshold, it means that more TRPs need to be selected for a better positioning accuracy, so the terminal device 110 may select more TRPs from the set of TRPs to perform positioning inference at the AI / ML model. And if the difference is below the threshold, it means that the currently selected TRPs are enough for a desired positioning accuracy, so the terminal device 110 may determine the currently selected TRPs as the subset of TRPs.

[0074] As an example, FIG. 3 shows schematically the flow of the operations for determining the subset of TRPs according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. At 302, the terminal device 110 receives CIR / PDP signals from all TRPs in the set of TRPs (i.e. the holistic TRP set) . At 304, the terminal device 110 performs positioning inference  at the AI / ML model for the holistic TRP set. At 306, the terminal device 110 selects N’TRP TRPs out of all NTRP TRPs. Here, the total number of TRPs in the holistic TRP set is noted as NTRP. At 308, the terminal device 110 performs positioning inference at the AI / ML model for the selected N’TRP TRPs.

[0075] At 310, the terminal device 110 checks if a divergence / difference between the two positioning inference results (respectively at 304 and 308) is beyond a threshold. If the divergence / difference is below the threshold, it means that the currently selected TRPs are enough for a desired positioning accuracy, so the terminal device 110, at 314, determines the currently selected TRPs as the subset of TRPs, and with the CIR / PDP signals from the selected N’TRP TRPs, the terminal device 110 may perform AI / ML positioning using the AI / ML model.

[0076] On the other hand, if the divergence / difference is beyond the threshold, the terminal device 110 increases the selected TRP number to reselect TRPs, i.e., the value of N’TRP is increased, for example, it is added by “1” . With the increased value of N’TRP, the terminal device 110 again performs operations of 306, 308 and 310, until the divergence / difference between the two positioning inference results is below the threshold, and go to the step 314.

[0077] It is noted that initially the terminal device 110 may select a small number of TRPs to perform the step 308. For example, selecting 3 or 4 TRPs from total 18 TRPs. Regarding the initial value of N’TRP, it is may be any other proper value, and the scope of the present disclosure is not limited in this regard.

[0078] Regarding how to select N’TRP TRPs (i.e. to select which N’TRP) from the total NTRP TRPs at 306, the terminal device 110 may adopt a NTRP-by-NTRP mutual correlation based TRP selection criteria, which is to be further discussed in detail in the following.

[0079] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may select, from the set of TRPs, a determined number of TRPs as the subset of TRPs, the selected TRPs having lower correlations with other TRPs in the set of TRPs compared to one or more TRPs which are not selected among the set of TRPs. That is to say, the terminal device 110 may select N’TRP TRPs from the total NTRP TRPs, the selected N’TRP TRPs having lower correlations with other TRPs compared to the TRPs which are not selected.

[0080] The present disclosure provides in particular two example ways of selection. Regarding the first way, in order to select out the N’TRP TRPs, the terminal device 110 may receive signals for positioning from each TRP of the set of TRPs, the signals for positioning  from the each TRP being represented as a vector. Then, the terminal device 110 may calculate a correlation value between each two vectors to obtain a correlation matrix. Then, the terminal device 110 may average each line in the correlation matrix to obtain an average correlation value of a TRP. And then, the terminal device 110 may select the determined number of TRPs (N’TRP TRPs) from the set of TRPs with the lowest average correlation values, as the subset of TRPs.

[0081] As an example, FIG. 4 shows schematically the selection operations of the first way according to some embodiments of the present disclosure, which may be an example embodiment of the NTRP-by-NTRP mutual correlation based TRP selection criteria.

[0082] As shown in FIG. 4, the terminal device 110 first, at 401, perceives CIR / PDP signals from NTRP serving TRPs. CIR / PDP signal from each TRP is regarded as a vector whose size is (1, Nport, Nt) .

[0083] At 402, the terminal device 110 calculates the correlation value between each CIR / PDP vector via some mathematical tools (e.g., Pearson correlation coefficient, Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient, Cosine Similarity, etc. ) . Then, the terminal device 110 can obtain a NTRP-by-NTRP correlation matrix through calculating each pair of vectors in the received CIR / PDP signals.

[0084] At 403, the terminal device 110 averages each line in the NTRP-by-NTRP correlation matrix, and can obtain the average correlation value of each TRP vector. Then, the terminal device 110 selects N’TRP TRPs with the lowest N’TRP average correlation values, indicating the TRPs less correlated with other TRPs should be selected out.

[0085] Regarding the second way, in order to select out the N’TRP TRPs, the terminal device 110 may receive signals for positioning from each TRP of the set of TRPs, the signals for positioning from the each TRP being represented as a vector. Then, the terminal device 110 may calculate a correlation value between each two vectors to obtain a correlation matrix. Then, the terminal device 110 may determine a TRP with a second largest value in each row in the correlation matrix. And then, the terminal device 110 may select the determined number of TRPs (N’TRP TRPs) from the set of TRPs with the lowest values of the second largest value, as the subset of TRPs.

[0086] As an example, FIG. 5 shows schematically the selection operations of the second way according to some embodiments of the present disclosure, which may be another example embodiment of the NTRP-by-NTRP mutual correlation based TRP selection criteria.

[0087] As shown in FIG. 5, operations of 501 and 502 are the same as those of 401 and 402. At 503, the terminal device 110 finds the TRP index of the 2nd largest value in each row in the NTRP-by-NTRP correlation matrix (since the 1st largest value in a row should always belong the TRP itself) . At 504, the terminal device 110 records the 2nd correlated values from each row in the NTRP-by-NTRP correlation matrix. At 505, the terminal device 110 sorts the 2nd correlated values in a descending order. At 506, the terminal device 110 selects the N’TRP TRPs with the lowest 2nd correlation values.

[0088] In view of the above, the terminal device 110 may use one of the above two ways to select N’TRP TRPs discussed in reference with 306 in FIG. 3. It is understood that the terminal device 110 may use any of other proper ways to select N’TRP TRPs having lower correlations with other TRPs compared the non-selected TRPs.

[0089] In some embodiments, the information 228 indicative of the subset of TRPs transmitted by the terminal device 110 may comprise indices of the TRPs included in the subset of TRPs. That is to say, the terminal device 110 may transmit the selected TRP indices to the network device 120.

[0090] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may perform positioning inference at the AI / ML model for the subset of TRPs to determine a position of the terminal device. That is to say, since the network device 120 has requested the selected TRPs 130 to send CIR / PDP signals to the terminal device 110, the selected TRPs 130 accordingly send the CIR / PDP signals (e.g. with their TRP indices) to the terminal device 110, and the terminal device 110 may perform positioning of itself.

[0091] In view of the above, the present disclosure provides a signaling framework to reduce the required TRP number in AI / ML positioning with sustainable positioning accuracy. In addition, since AI / ML based positioning adopting CIR / PDP as model input may consume large air-interface resource to report CIR / PDP measurement, the present disclosure proposes a TRP selection criteria to determine the minimal number of TRPs. Further, the present disclosure proposes that a unified model to adaptively accommodate CIR / PDP signals from different number of TRPs may be maintained by LMF and provided to the terminal device.

[0092] In this way, the solutions according to some embodiments of the present disclosure can reduce transmission overhead by only selecting TRPs which have low correlations with other TRPs. According to some embodiments of the present disclosure, there are two major innovation points: first, UE uses the NTRP-by-NTRP mutual correlation based TRP selection  criteria to determine whether CIR / PDP from multiple TRPs are redundant and which TRPs should be selected to maintain the positioning accuracy with a minimal cost of overhead. Second, LMF provides a unified AI / ML positioning model to adaptively accommodate the input CIR / PDP from various TRP combination (i.e., TRP index pattern) from a variable number of TRPs.

[0093] FIG. 6 illustrates an example signaling process 600 between UE side (referred to UE 610) , LMF side (referred to LMF 620) , and TRP side (referred to TRP 630) in AI / ML positioning in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. In some embodiments, the new functionalities and messages may be embodied at 601-603 and 606-608, which are highlighted in bold.

[0094] As shown in FIG. 6, at 601, LMF 620 maintains a unified-TRP-pattern AI / ML positioning model (referred to the unified-TRP-pattern model hereafter) accommodating the input CIR / PDP from various TRP patterns from a variable number of TRPs. Since LMF is able to receive and store CIR / PDP data from various TRP patterns, the unified-TRP-pattern model should be located at LMF side.

[0095] At 602, UE 610 sends a request to LMF 620 for the unified-TRP-pattern model to accommodate dynamic TRP patterns. At 603, LMF 620 sends the unified-TRP-pattern model to UE 610 (or UE 610 downloads the unified-TRP-pattern model from LMF 620) . At 604, TRP 630 (at this point, it refers to each one in the holistic TRPs) sends CIR / PDP signals to UE periodically or on demand. In some embodiments, TRP 630 sends the CIR / PDP signals based on a certain period. In some embodiments, TRP 630 sends the CIR / PDP signals based on a certain event.

[0096] At 605, UE 610 monitors the positioning inference performance of the unified-TRP-pattern model whose input is the CIR / PDP matrix from the holistic TRP set. Some conventional methods can be adopted for monitoring, e.g., the statistic-measurement-based model monitoring method. If the monitoring indicator is beyond satisfactory, it means the unified-TRP-pattern model for CIR / PDP matrix from the holistic TRP set works well and the TRP number can be reduced in CIR / PDP signals.

[0097] At 606, UE 610 selects the appropriate TRP pattern via the proposed correlation-value-based TRP selection criteria and guarantee the inference result of the reduced TRP set not far from the result of the holistic TRP set. The detailed operations may be those illustrated in FIG. 3.

[0098] At 607, UE 610 sends the selected TRP indices to LMF 620. At 608, per the received TRP indices, LMF 620 requests TRP 630 (at this point, it refers to each of the selected TRPs) to send CIR / PDP signals to UE 610. At 609, the selected TRPs send the CIR / PDP signals with their TRP indices to UE 610, such that UE 610 performs positioning of itself. With above signaling framework, the required TRP number in AI / ML positioning are reduced, while the positioning accuracy is sustained.

[0099] FIG. 7 illustrates schematically an embodiment architecture of the unified AI / ML positioning model accommodating different TRP patterns. As shown in FIG. 7, the input of this model 710 is the CIR / PDP signal matrix (NTRP, Nport, Nt) from a dynamic TRP pattern. The signals from selected N’TRP TRPs are directly input to the model, which are represented with reference number 701. The signals from unselected (NTRP -N’TRP) TRPs are masked using zero-padding, which are represented with reference number 702. The output is the positioning coordinates, e.g., (x, y) , which is represented with reference number 703.

[0100] In the training stage, the model 710 may be trained in a supervised manner with CIR / PDP matrix (NTRP, Nport, Nt) of a dynamic pattern. In the inference stage, the model input may be any of the CIR / PDP vector combinations selected from the holistic TRP set.

[0101] The proposed TRP selection scheme is evaluated with the proposed unified-TRP-pattern AI / ML positioning model. In the model training stage, the unified model is trained with the dataset consisting of CIR / PDP signal matrix (N’TRP, Nport, Nt) , where N’TRP varies from 4 to 18 and the TRP patterns in the CIR / PDP are also variable. Then, in the model inference stage, the unified model is tested with the CIR / PDP signal matrix (4, Nport, Nt) , where the 4 TRPs are selected out of all 18 TRPs via the proposed NTRP-by-NTRP mutual correlation based TRP selection criteria.

[0102] The baseline schemes are the Random scheme and the Fixed Scheme. In the random scheme, the selected 4 TRPs are randomly selected out of all 18 TRPs. In the fixed scheme, there is no TRP selection and the 4 TRPs are fixed. There is a significant positioning accuracy increment of the proposed TRP selection scheme than the baseline random scheme and fixed scheme, which indicates the proposed scheme’s ability to determine the significance and correlations of the CIR / PDP signals from different TRPs. Therefore, with the proposed NTRP-by-NTRP mutual correlation based TRP selection criteria, we can remove the redundant TRPs in the holistic TRP set to better reduce transmission overhead in AI / ML positioning.

[0103] FIG. 8 illustrates a flowchart of an example method 800 implemented at a terminal device (e.g. the terminal device 110 or the UE 610) in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 800 will be described from the perspective of the terminal device 110 with reference to FIGS. 1 and 2.

[0104] At block 810, the terminal device receives, from a network device, an artificial intelligence (AI)  / machine learning (ML) model for positioning, wherein the AI / ML model is maintained to be applicable to different transmission and reception point (TRP) combinations of a variable number of TRPs. At block 820, the terminal device determines, based on the AI / ML model and from a set of TRPs available for positioning the terminal device, a subset of TRPs for positioning the terminal device. At block 830, the terminal device transmits, to the network device, information indicative of the subset of TRPs.

[0105] In some embodiments, the determination of the subset of TRPs may be further based on a requirement of positioning accuracy. In some embodiments, the terminal device may determine the subset of TRPs by: determining a first result of positioning inference by the AI / ML model for the set of TRPs; determining a second result of positioning inference by the AI / ML model for TRPs selected from the set of TRPs; based on a difference between the first result and the second result, determining whether a number of the TRPs selected from the set of TRPs is to be increased.

[0106] In some embodiments, the terminal device may further determine the subset of TRPs by: based on determining that the difference is above a threshold, selecting more TRPs from the set of TRPs to perform positioning inference at the AI / ML model. In some embodiments, the terminal device may further determine the subset of TRPs by: based on determining that the difference is below the threshold, determining the TRPs selected from the set of TRPs as the subset of TRPs.

[0107] In some embodiments, the terminal device may further determine the subset of TRPs by: selecting, from the set of TRPs, a determined number of TRPs as the subset of TRPs, wherein the selected TRPs have lower correlations with other TRPs in the set of TRPs compared to one or more TRPs which are not selected among the set of TRPs. In some embodiments, the terminal device may further determine the subset of TRPs by: receiving at least one signal for positioning from each TRP of the set of TRPs, wherein the at least one signal for positioning from the each TRP is represented as a vector; calculating a correlation value between each two vectors to obtain a correlation matrix; averaging each line in the  correlation matrix to obtain an average correlation value of a TRP; and selecting the determined number of TRPs from the set of TRPs with the lowest average correlation values, as the subset of TRPs.

[0108] In some embodiments, the terminal device may further determine the subset of TRPs by: receiving at least one signal for positioning from each TRP of the set of TRPs, wherein the at least one signal for positioning from the each TRP is represented as a vector; calculating a correlation value between each two vectors to obtain a correlation matrix; determining a TRP with a second largest value in each row in the correlation matrix; and selecting the determined number of TRPs from the set of TRPs with the lowest values of the second largest value, as the subset of TRPs.

[0109] In some embodiments, the terminal device may further monitor a first output of the AI / ML model with model input of measurements provided by the set of TRPs; and based on the monitoring, determine whether a positioning accuracy of the first output meets a requirement of positioning accuracy.

[0110] In some embodiments, the terminal device may transmit, to the network device, the information indicative of the subset of TRPs by: transmitting indices of TRPs included in the subset of TRPs to the network device. In some embodiments, the terminal device may further transmit, to the network device, a request for the AI / ML model, wherein the AI / ML model is transmitted from the network device in response to the request. In some embodiments, the terminal device may further perform positioning inference at the AI / ML model for the subset of TRPs to determine a position of the terminal device.

[0111] In some embodiments, the AI / ML model is maintained by the network device. In some embodiments, the at least one signal for positioning may comprise at least one of the following: a channel impulse response (CIR) signal; or a power delay profile (PDP) signal. In some embodiments, the network device may be a location management function (LMF) .

[0112] FIG. 9 illustrates another flowchart of an example method 900 implemented at a network device (e.g. the network device 120) in accordance with some other embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 900 will be described from the perspective of the network device 120 with reference to FIGS. 1 and 2.

[0113] At block 910, the network device maintains an artificial intelligence (AI)  / machine learning (ML) model for positioning to be applicable to different transmission and reception point (TRP) combinations of a variable number of TRPs. At block 920, the network device  transmits the AI / ML model to a terminal device. At block 930, the network device receives, from the terminal device, information indicative of a subset of TRPs for positioning the terminal device, wherein the subset of TRPs is selected, based on the AI / ML model, from a set of TRPs available for positioning the terminal device. At block 940, the network device transmits, to the subset of TRPs, a request for transmitting, to the terminal device, at least one signal for positioning.

[0114] In some embodiments, the information indicative of the subset of TRPs may comprise indices of the TRPs included in the subset of TRPs. In some embodiments, the network device may further receive, from the terminal device, a request for the AI / ML model, and wherein the AI / ML model is, in response to the request, transmitted to the terminal device. In some embodiments, the at least one signal for positioning may comprise at least one of the following: a channel impulse response (CIR) signal; or a power delay profile (PDP) signal. In some embodiments, the network device is a location management function (LMF) .

[0115] In some embodiments, an apparatus capable of performing the method 800 (for example, the terminal device 110 or the UE 610) may comprise means for performing the respective steps of the method 800. The means may be implemented in any suitable form. For example, the means may be implemented in a circuitry or software module.

[0116] In some example embodiments, the apparatus comprises: means for receiving, at a terminal device and from a network device, an artificial intelligence (AI)  / machine learning (ML) model for positioning, wherein the AI / ML model is maintained to be applicable to different transmission and reception point (TRP) combinations of a variable number of TRPs; means for determining, based on the AI / ML model and from a set of TRPs available for positioning the terminal device, a subset of TRPs for positioning the terminal device; and means for transmitting, to the network device, information indicative of the subset of TRPs.

[0117] In some embodiments, the determination of the subset of TRPs may be further based on a requirement of positioning accuracy.

[0118] In some embodiments, the means for determining the subset of TRPs may comprise: means for determining a first result of positioning inference by the AI / ML model for the set of TRPs; means for determining a second result of positioning inference by the AI / ML model for TRPs selected from the set of TRPs; and means for, based on a difference between the first result and the second result, determining whether a number of the TRPs selected from the set of TRPs is to be increased.

[0119] In some embodiments, the means for determining the subset of TRPs may further comprise: means for, based on determining that the difference is above a threshold, selecting more TRPs from the set of TRPs to perform positioning inference at the AI / ML model.
