[0098] FIG. 22B depicts an exemplary drive assembly of the latch of FIG. 22A, in accordance with aspects of the invention.Detailed description of the invention

[0099] The exemplary drive assemblies disclosed herein are configured be driven by an output shaft of a motor. The drive assemblies described herein are particularly suitable, for example, for use in a lock or latch, such as an electronic latch for facilitating a connection between a charging station and a charge port of an electric vehicle. In one non-limiting example, the disclosed assembly desirably achieves the power required to operate an electrical system, such as a locking system comprising a lock having said drive assembly, for facilitating a connection between a charging station and a  charge port of an electric vehicle. Still further, the disclosed drive assemblies desirably make it possible to avoid the use of a PCB via used of electric connections and signals needed to control and drive the lock.

[0100] In some instances, chargers may need to facilitate the required electrical connection between a charging station and the electric vehicle during low ambient temperatures or in cold climates, when snow, water, and / or ice can accumulate in and impede access to the charging ports of the charging station or the electric vehicle. Thus, accordingly to aspects of this invention, a lock is provided for chargers that is capable of operation during low ambient temperatures or in cold climates.

[0101] A motorized latch is intended for permitting or limiting access to a charge port installed in an electric vehicle, for example. The latch is generally rectangular in shape and is mounted over an opening, such as an opening formed in a charge socket of a vehicle. In an unlocked position of the latch, the electric vehicle is restricted from receiving charge from the charging station. Additionally or optionally, improper removal or theft of the charger (e.g. by an unauthorised user) or access to the charger is prevented. In the locked position of the latch, the electric vehicle is not restricted from receiving charge from the charging station.

[0102] Although embodiments of drive assemblies, such as drive assembly 450 (discussed below) , are described herein with respect to a latch, such as electronic latch for facilitating a connection between a charging station and a charge port of an electric vehicle, it will be understood that the invention is not so limited. Other suitable applications for an exemplary drive assembly of the present invention will be readily understood by one of ordinary skill in the art from the description herein.

[0103] An embodiment of an exemplary electrical system, such as an electrical system 100 of a motor vehicle 200 for use with a charging station 110 in accordance with aspects of the invention is disclosed in FIGS. 1A-1C. The system 100 includes a charging port 300 mounted to the motor vehicle 200 and configured to mate with a plug 120 of a cable assembly 130 of the charging station 110. The system 100 also includes a motorized latch, such as latch 400, coupled to the charging port 300 via a fastener (e.g. slider 444)  for releasably coupling the latch 400 to the charging port 300. In one exemplary embodiment, as shown in FIG. 1A, the charging port 300 and / or latch 400 is installed or mounted to the motor vehicle 200. In another exemplary embodiment, as shown in FIG. 1B, the charging port 300 and / or latch 400 is installed or mounted to the charging station 110. In still another exemplary embodiment, as shown in FIG. 1C, the charging port 300 and / or latch 400 are installed or mounted to both the charging station 110 and the motor vehicle 200. Additional details of the system 100 comprising latch 400 and charging port 300 are discussed below.

[0104] An embodiment of a charging port incorporating aspects of the present invention is disclosed in FIGS. 2A-2B. In one a non-limiting example, a charging port of an electric vehicle or a charging station, such as charging port 300, is configured to mate with a plug 120 of a cable assembly 130 for facilitating the electric vehicle 200 receiving charge from the charging station 110. The charging port 300 includes a housing 302 having a first mounting surface 304 configured to operatively engage with a corresponding surface (not shown) of the plug 120 of the cable assembly 130 and a second mounting surface (not shown) configured to mate with a corresponding interior surface of the electric vehicle 200. The charging port 300 also includes a motorized latch, such as latch 400, associated with the housing 302. In one embodiment, as illustrated in FIG. 2A, the latch 400 is oriented along a generally downwardly direction (arrow Y) based on the position of a pin 402 (discussed further below) relative to the first mounting surface 304 of the housing 302. In another embodiment, as illustrated in FIG. 2B, the latch 400 is oriented along an orthogonal direction (arrow Z) that is based on the position of the pin 402 (discussed further below) relative to the first mounting surface 304 of the housing 302.

[0105] An embodiment of an assembled motorized latch in accordance with aspects of the invention is disclosed in FIGS. 3A-3L. The motorized latch 400 includes a latch housing 410 comprising a cover 420 (FIGS. 14A-14F and 15A-15F) and a base 430 (FIGS. 4A-4H) . The latch housing 410 can be formed from one or more structures which together define a cavity or space, with one or more operational components of the latch 400 being positioned within the space in the housing 410. Although the housing 410 is illustrated as being comprised of separate components, e.g. cover 420 and base 430,  one of ordinary skill in the art would understand from the description herein that the housing 410 may be integrally formed as a single body of unitary construction. As depicted in FIGS. 4A-4H, 14A-14F, and 15A-15F, the cover 420 and the base 430 each have a shape and size that corresponds to the other, such that together, each of the cover 420 and the base 430 may have surfaces or portions thereof that correspond or conform to the shape, size, and surface of one or more of the components of the latch 400. The cover 420 and the base 430 may be made of more durable material, relative to one or more of the other components of the latch 410. In an example, the cover 420 and the base 430 may be made of more durable material, relative to one or more of the other components of the latch 400. In an example, the cover 420 and the base 430 are formed from a more rigid material intended to provide support and / or a mounting structure for the components of the latch 410. However, it would be understood from the description herein that optionally, the cover 420 and the base 430 may comprise different materials. Further, the cover 420 and the base 430 may generally have a rectangular shape. However, various modifications may be made in the size and shape of the latch housing 410 without departing from the invention, so long as the latch housing 410 may be positioned at least partially within a cavity or space. In an exemplary embodiment, the cavity or space may be defined by a charging port 300 configured to be installed to a motor vehicle 200, such that the latch housing 410 is releasably mounted to the second mounting surface of the housing 302 of the charging port 300.

[0106] In an exemplary embodiment, as shown in FIGS. 14A-14F, a pair of openings 442 is defined by an exterior surface of the latch housing 410, more particularly of cover 420, such that at least one screw boss is configured to be received and extend through the openings 442 for facilitating attachment of the latch housing 410 to the charging port 300. In another exemplary embodiment, as shown in FIGS. 15A-15F, a slider 444 is configured to be attached to the latch housing 410, such that the slider 444 is configured to partially or entirely surround a perimeter of the latch housing 410. The slider 444 is configured to move between a locking and unlocking position (for facilitating attachment of the latch housing 410 to the charging port 300) via a sliding mechanism, wherein a portion of the slider 444 slides or translates along a track defined by the perimeter of the latch housing 410.

[0107] In an exemplary embodiment, as shown in FIGS. 6A-6D, a shroud 440 is coupled to the base 430 and configured to provide support and / or a mounting structure for the components of the latch 410, such as a drive assembly 450 and components thereof. As shown in at least FIGS. 3C and 6A-6D, arrangement of at least components of drive assembly 450, including the motor 404, are shown. In particular, motor 404 is mounted to the shroud 440 that is coupled to the housing base 430. To facilitate this attachment, base 430 may have surfaces or portions thereof that correspond or conform to the shape, size, and surface of one or more of surfaces of the motor 404 and / or other the components of the latch 400.

[0108] As seen in FIGS. 3G and 6A-6D, motor 404 has a rotatable output shaft 406 configured to rotate around a shaft axis (FIG. 6D) for a single direction (either clockwise or counter-clockwise) . Rotatable output shaft 406 may have a fixed worm screw 408 having teeth 412, the details of which are shown in FIGS. 7A-7E. Teeth 412 of worm screw 408 has a tooth profile configured to provide a worm gear efficiency of at least 50%, or more preferably, between 70%to 90%. One skilled in the art would understand from the description herein that worm gear efficiency may be due or influenced, in part, by the intended application or incorporation of the drive assembly 450 in accordance with aspects of the invention. In a non-limiting example, the tooth profile comprises one or more of a bore diameter, a pitch diameter, an axial pitch, a normal pitch, and a lead angle associated with the worm screw 408.

[0109] Turning now to FIGS. 3C, 6A-6D, 8A-8F, the drive assembly includes a helix gear 414 configured to be engageably coupled directly or indirectly to the output shaft 406 of the motor 404. In this way, the helix gear 414 rotates about a helix gear axis “A” (FIGS. 3C, 6B-6C) in response to motion of the output shaft 406 of the motor 404. To facilitate this, the helix gear 414 comprises teeth 416 that are non-rotatably connected to and mesh with teeth 480 of the worm screw 408. The helix gear 414 has an opening 414a through which one or more of a power screw 418 (discussed further below) and the pin 402 extends.

[0110] Further, as shown in FIGS. 6A-6D, 10A-10J, and 11A-11J, the drive assembly 450 comprises the power screw 418 that is rotatably mounted to the helix gear 414 and is configured to move relative to the helix gear axis (A)  in response to rotation of the helix gear 414, when driven by motion of the output shaft 406 caused by activation of motor 404. Additionally, the drive assembly 450 includes the pin 402 (FIGS. 10B, 10K-10M and 11B, 11K-11M) coupled directly or indirectly to the power screw 418 and configured to move relative to the helix gear axis (A) in response to motion of the helix gear 414 and the power screw 418. In operation, the geometries of at least the pin 402 and the power screw 418 permits a “self-locking” feature when the pin 402 and the power screw 418 are coupled to each other, such that the pin 402 cannot be driven backwards mechanically, thereby permitting the pin 402 to resist tamper forces and protecting the worm screw 408 from reverse loading. The pin 402 is movable between an engaged or extended position, as shown in at least FIGS. 3I-3L, in which the pin 402 operatively couples to the charging station 110 and does not restrict the electric vehicle 200 from receiving charge from the charging station 100, and a disengaged or retracted position, as shown in at least FIGS. 3D-3H, in which the pin 402 restricts the electrical vehicle 200 from receiving charge from the charging station 110. Thus, motion of the pin 402 between the engaged and disengaged positions provides a locking / unlocking feature for permitting a plug of a cable assembly to operatively couple to the charging port 300 of electrical vehicle 200 and / or charging station 110. Additionally or optionally, the pin 402 acts as a high force push or pull actuator, thereby permitting the pin 402 to resist improper removal of a plug of cable assembly 130 or unauthorized access to the electrical system comprising charging port 300 of electrical vehicle 200 and / or charging station 110.

[0111] Still further, the pin 402 is generally cylindrical and may have any size or length that is not limited to what is illustrated in the figures. Further, one skilled in the art would understand from the description herein that, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, the geometry and dimensions of one or more components of the latch 400, including pin 402, may vary based on the structural features of the charging port 300 (e.g. type of mounting arrangements dictated by plug variants by country) , the electric vehicle 200, the charging station 110, and / or the desired application of the latch 400 and / or drive assembly 450.

[0112] Referring now to FIGS. 4A-4H, to facilitate movement of the pin 402 between the engaged and disengaged positions, the base 430 includes an  engagement surface 432, which defines an opening 432a through which the pin 402 is configured to extend when latch 400 is assembled. The pin 402 is configured to translate relative to the helix gear axis (A) between the engaged position and the disengaged position, such that the pin 402 is extended farther from the engagement surface 432 of the base 430 in the engaged position (see FIG. 3E) as compared with the disengaged position (see FIG. 3J) .

[0113] To facilitate the motion of the pin 402 between the engaged and disengaged positions, latch 410 includes a plurality of pressed lead frames 422 (e.g. comprising materials, such as tin plated phosphor-bronze) , as illustrated in FIGS. 12A-12R, for facilitating electrical connections between at least one micro-switch 424 and a control unit (not shown) external to the drive assembly 450. In an exemplary embodiment, the plurality of lead frames 422 permits the latch 400 to omit the need for a printed circuit board (PCB) . In another embodiment, a PCB is positioned separate from or external to the drive assembly 450 and / or the latch 400. Still further, in an embodiment, the plurality of lead frames 422 may be overmolded onto the base 430. Additionally or optionally, the plurality of lead frames 422 is integrally formed as a single body of unitary construction. In another exemplary embodiment, the plurality of lead frames 422 comprise a first set 422a (FIGS. 12B-12I) and a second set 422b (FIGS. 12J-12R) , which may be modified to form individual links (e.g. 5 individual and independent links) . FIG. 12C and 12K, respectively show the “as stamped” condition of the plurality of lead frames 422 prior to end portions thereof being modified or manipulated (e.g. bent up or down) . In this way, ease of assembly is improved and cost is reduced. The first set 422a are configured to interconnect back for motor terminals, and the first set 422b are configured to interconnect forward to the at least one micro-switch 424. In an exemplary embodiment, poke-yoke terminal ends are provided to the at least one micro-switch 424 to ensure correct switch placement relative to the pin 402.

[0114] In operation, with reference to FIGS. 12A and 13A-13G, translation of the pin 402, such as between the engaged position and the disengaged position, is sensed or detected by the at least one micro-switch 424, which communicates one or more positions of the pin 402 to a control unit (not shown) of the electric vehicle 200. To achieve this, in a non-limiting example,  the at least one micro-switch 424 is disposed adjacent the pin 402. Additionally or optionally, the pin 402 comprises a cam surface 426 which may have a geometry that corresponds to the geometry of one or more components of latch 400, including the power screw 418, the pin 402, the helix gear 418, and a bushing 428 (FIG. 9A-9F) . In this embodiment, the bushing 428 is configured to facilitate connection of at least two components of the latch 400, such as cam surface 426 and pin 402 with the shroud 440, base 430, and / or helix gear 414, as best illustrated in FIGS. 6B-6C.

[0115] The at least one micro-switch 424 is configured to detect one or more positions of the pin 402 based on detection of the cam surface 426 as the pin 402 moves between the disengaged and engaged positions. In this way, the at least one micro-switch 424 is configured to deactivate supply of power to the motor 404, based on the detected one or more positions of the pin 402. The plurality of lead frames 422 comprise electrically conductive tracks which interconnects the motor 404 to the power source (not shown) and the motor 104 to the at least one micro-switch 424. End portions of the lead frames may extend within an interior space 434 defined by the base 430. In an exemplary embodiment, a connector 436 of the base 430 defines the interior space 434, and the connector 436 extends from the base 430 and in a direction parallel to the helix gear axis (A) , as shown in FIGS. 2A. In another exemplary embodiment, the connector 436 of the base 430 defines the interior space 434, and the connector 436 extends from the base 430 and in a direction orthogonal to the helix gear axis (A) , as shown in FIG. 17. Additionally or optionally, the latch 400 includes an electromagnetic (EMC) link 460 (FIG. 3C) configured to connect a portion of lead frame set 422b (e.g. a central or common ground link of lead frame 422b or between the at least one switch 424) , with the link 460 extending along or generally following a profile or surface defined by shroud 440) to the motor 404. This configuration desirably achieves attenuation of emissions from the motor 404 to improve EMC performance.

[0116] Details of the at least one micro-switch 424 are shown in FIGS. 13A-13G. A dome 452 extends from the micro-switch 424 and is positioned to detect portions of the cam surface 426. In a non-limiting example, the micro-switch 424 is configured to detect one or more positions of the pin 402, and communicate one or more positions of the pin 402 to a processor and / or  controller in the vehicle. In an exemplary embodiment, the signal outputted by the at least one micro-switch 424 may be outputted to a computer or control unit in a vehicle, thereby indicating a charging cycle of the electric vehicle 200, which can signify, for example, that the pin 402 is operatively coupled to the charging station 110 and does not restrict the electric vehicle 200 from receiving charge from the charging station 110. Desirably, when the pin 402 is in the engaged or extended position, improper removal from or access to the charging port 300 is prevented, thereby impeding theft or improper removal of the plug by an unauthorised user. The at least one micro-switch 424 may be generally referred to as a sensor, and / or may be substituted by a rotary encoder, Hall-effect sensor, a Linear Variable Differential Transformer (LVDT) , potentiometer, optical proximity sensor, transducer, eddy-current sensor, or photodiode, for example. As stated previously, the at least one micro-switch 424 is configured to sense position of the pin 402 based upon the interaction between the dome 452 and the cam surface 426. The cam surface 426 may be referred to herein as an indexing means. As an alternative to the cam surface 426, those skilled in the art will recognize that the indexing means could be a surface, recess, marking, magnet, circuit, magnetic feature, optical feature, post, slot, pin, or a combination thereof, for example, or any other feature on the pin 402 or another component indirectly or directly coupled thereto (e.g. power screw 418) that can be used for tracking movement of the pin 402. Also, the indexing means could be provided on a different or another component of the drive assembly 450 or latch 400.

[0117] As shown in FIGS. 13D-13G, the at least one micro-switch 424 is configured to detect one or more positions of the pin 402 corresponding to a travel distance of the pin 402 between the engaged and disengaged positions, and the travel distance is between 0 mm and 11 mm, or more preferably between 6 mm and 11 mm, or even more preferably between 7.5 mm (FIG. 13D) and 9.5 mm (FIG. 13G) . In an exemplary embodiment, the at least one micro-switch 424 is configured to deactivate supply of power to the motor 404 when the one or more positions of the pin 402 corresponds to a travel distance of at least 8.5 mm. In a non-limiting example, the pin 402 continues to move between the disengaged position and the engaged position when the supply of power to the motor is deactivated, such that the pin 402 continues to move between the disengaged position and the engaged position for a travel  distance of 9.5 mm, for example. In another non-limiting example, the pin 402 moves between the disengaged position and the engaged position at a speed of 9.5 mm in 250 milliseconds (ms) . Thus, in summary, in an exemplary embodiment, when the pin 402 travels for a distance of 7.5 mm, the at least one micro-switch 424 is configured to detect one or more positions of the pin 402 corresponding to detection of a portion (e.g. a wing, extension, protrusion, etc. ) defined by the cam surface 426. The at least one micros-switch senses or registers a status change when the pin 402 travels for a distance at 8.5mm. Additionally or optionally, the at least one micro-switch 424 is configured to deactivate supply of power to the motor 404, but system inertia permits the pin 402 to continue to travel for a total distance of 9.5mm. In this way, a soft stop feature is provided, such that the motor 404 is not driven to stall, the operational components of drive assembly 450 and / or latch 400 are not severely loaded, thereby ensuring high cycle life of the latch 400.

[0118] Accordingly, latch systems according to embodiments of this invention can include electronic braking to reduce impact forces and extend product life. For example, a motor cut off based on pin position detection can avoid stall conditions. Still further, in an exemplary embodiment, the drive assembly 450 is configured to meet one or more predetermined performance characteristics associated with the desired application or implementation of the drive assembly 450 and / or latch 400. Referring to FIG. 16, the one or more predetermined performance characteristics comprise a target force generated on the pin 402, a target speed (mm / s) of the pin 402 during movement between the engaged position and the disengaged position, such that varying ratios achieved between the drive mechanism (e.g. of drive assembly 450) and motor (e.g. motor 404) power can be tuned for specific travel (e.g. of pin 402) , force, or speed, for example.

[0119] In one non-limiting example, as shown in FIG. 16, the one or more predetermined characteristics include a target force (70N) and a target speed (9.5 mm / 250 ms) . The latch 400 comprising drive assembly 450 (and the drive assembly 450 more generally) achieves these one or more predetermined characteristics and exceeds such requirements (e.g. values to the right of the target force reaching up to 220N and values below the target speed, a ratio of less than 0.04 m / s) . In other words, the latch 400 according  to embodiments of this invention can be configured to have a pin speed of 9.5 mm / 250 ms or more, a force of 70N or more, or a pin speed of 9.5 mm / 250 ms or more and a force of 70N or more. In the performance characteristics illustrated in FIG. 16, the latch 400 according to embodiments of this invention can be configured to always have at least one of a pin speed of 9.5 mm / 250 ms or more, and a force of 70N or more, and can be configured to have a pin speed of 9.5 mm / 250 ms or more and a force of 70N or more. Thus, one skilled in the art would understand from the description herein that the drive assembly 450 and / or latch 400 is not necessarily limited to one or more predetermined performance characteristics discussed or illustrated herein.

[0120] In a non-limiting example, the drive assembly 450 is configured to generate a force on the pin 402 of at least 60N over movement of the pin 402 between the disengaged position and the engaged position for the full travel distance of the pin 402. Additionally or optionally, the drive assembly 450 is configured to generate a force on the pin 402 of at least 70N over movement of the pin 402 between the disengaged position and the engaged position for a travel distance of at least 9.5 mm in 0.25 seconds. Additionally or optionally, the drive assembly 450 is configured to generate a stall force of at least 170N. Notably, the one or more performance characteristics are achieved by the drive assembly 450 disclosed herein, while maintaining a compact design to meet the size or geometry requirements of one or more components of the system 100 (e.g. charging port 300) .

[0121] In a preferred embodiment, the drive assembly 450 is configured to generate a force on the pin 402 of at least 90N over movement of the pin 402 between the disengaged position and the engaged position for the full travel distance of the pin 402. In this way, the drive assembly 450 may be configured to generate the force on the pin 402 over movement of the pin 402 between the disengaged position and the engaged position according to a low temperature protocol corresponding to ambient temperatures below 0℃.

[0122] FIGS. 18A-18B depict another exemplary assembled motorized latch in accordance with aspects of the invention. The motorized latch, such as latch 500, is similar in several respects to latch 400 as described above. For example, the components of latch 500 generally correspond to those of the  embodiments described above, such as those of latch 400. For example, latch 500 is intended for permitting or limiting access to a charge port installed in an electric vehicle, for example. Generally, latch 500 is generally rectangular in shape and is mounted over an opening, such as an opening formed in a charge socket of a vehicle. In an unlocked position of the latch 500, the electric vehicle is restricted from receiving charge from the charging station. In the locked position of the latch 500, the electric vehicle is not restricted from receiving charge from the charging station. Further, latch 500 includes a drive assembly 550, the details and operation thereof generally correspond to those of drive assembly 450 discussed above.

[0123] In particular, the drive assembly 550 includes a pin 502 coupled directly or indirectly to the power screw and configured to move relative to the helix gear axis (A) in response to motion of the helix gear 514. The pin 502 of drive assembly 550 is movable between an engaged or extended position, in which the pin 502 operatively couples to the charging station and does not restrict the electric vehicle from receiving charge from the charging station, and a disengaged or retracted position, in which the pin 502 restricts the electrical vehicle from receiving charge from the charging station. Thus, motion of the pin 502 between the engaged and disengaged positions provides a locking / unlocking feature for permitting a plug of a cable assembly to operatively couple to the charging port of the electrical vehicle and / or charging station. Additionally or optionally, the pin 502 acts as a high force push or pull actuator, thereby permitting the pin 502 to resist improper or unintended removal of a plug of a cable assembly or unauthorized access to the electrical system comprising charging port of electrical vehicle and / or charging station.

[0124] However, latch 500 can differ in some respects, including that the latch housing 510 is integrally formed as a single body of unitary construction. In addition, the latch housing 510 includes a manual override 520 extending from a direction orthogonal to the helix gear axis (A) .

[0125] Although FIG. 18B illustrates manual override 520 in one orientation, one skilled in the art would understand from the description herein that the manual override 520 may be located in alternate positions, such as to the opposite end portion from that is shown. Further, one skilled in the art would  understand from the description herein that the manual override 520 or portions thereof may have additional or alternative geometries, configurations, or surfaces that directly or indirectly connect to separate or external drivers, keys, knobs, cables, or the like, in order to facilitate movement of the pin 502 between engaged and disengaged positions without activation of motor 404, for example. In one non-limiting example, manual override 520 has generally cylindrical geometry and includes a head portion having a hexagonal socket that corresponds to an external driver or key having an end portion that mates with the head portion of the manual override 520. An end portion of the manual override 520 that is opposite the head portion is operatively connected to at least the output shaft 506 and helix gear 514, such that movement (e.g. rotation, etc. ) of manual override 520 permits movement of the pin 502 between the engaged and disengaged positions. In one non-limiting example, to achieve full travel of pin 502 between the engaged and disengaged position requires a range of 12-20 turns of the manual override 520. This is achieved because the output shaft 506 has a fixed worm screw having teeth, and the helix gear comprises teeth that are non-rotatably connected to and mesh with the teeth of the worm screw (as illustrated in FIG. 18B) . Thus, in this configuration, the pin 502 is configured to retract, for example, into the disengaged position, in response to rotation of the helix gear 514, when driven by motion of the output shaft 506 caused by manual override 520 (i.e., not via activation of motor 404, for example) . Accordingly, in operation, the manual override 520 permits the pin 502 to be driven backwards mechanically, such that the pin 502 can be moved between the engaged or extended positions.

[0126] FIGS. 19A-19D depict another exemplary drive assembly in accordance with aspects of the invention. The embodiment of drive assembly 650 is similar in several respects to drive assembly 450, 550 as described above. However, in this embodiment, the drive assembly 650 includes motor 605 having an output shaft 606 and shaft 606 includes worm screw 608. The worm screw 608 includes teeth which are non-rotatably connected to and mesh with the teeth of a gear 600 interposed between the output 606 shaft of the motor 604 and the power screw 618. Additionally or optionally, worm screw 608 includes a portion 608a along its circumference that lacks teeth.

[0127] The power screw 618 is rotatably mounted to the helix gear 614 and is configured to move in response to rotation of the helix gear 614, when driven by motion of the gear 600 (which moves in response to motion of the output shaft 606 caused by activation of motor 605) . In operation, the geometries of the threads of the worm screw 608 and the power screw 618 restricts or prevents “self-locking, ” but permits reverse unlocking. Thus, via action on the drive assembly 650 (e.g. by external driver) , a pin 602 is movable between an engaged or extended position without activation of the motor 604. In an exemplary embodiment, as shown in FIG. 20, the external driver comprises a manual crank 620 which is rotatably mounted to gear 610, such that the power screw 618 moves in response to movement of helix gear 614 when driven by crank 620. In this way, the pin 502 is driven to a retracted or disengaged position, for example, in response to motion of power screw 618. FIG. 21A-2C depict another exemplary motorized latch and drive assembly in accordance with aspects of the invention. The motorized latch, such as latch 700, is similar in several respects to latch 400, 500 as described above. For example, the components of latch 700 generally correspond to those of the embodiments described above, such as those of latch 400, 500. For example, latch 700 is intended for permitting or limiting access to a charge port installed in an electric vehicle, for example. Generally, latch 700 is generally rectangular in shape and is mounted over an opening, such as an opening formed in a charge socket of a vehicle. In an unlocked position of the latch 700, the electric vehicle is restricted from receiving charge from the charging station. In the locked position of the latch 700, the electric vehicle is not restricted from receiving charge from the charging station.

[0128] Further, latch 700 includes a drive assembly 750, the details and operation thereof generally correspond to those of drive assembly 650 discussed above (e.g. with reference to FIGS. 19A-19D) . The embodiment of drive assembly 750 is similar in several respects to drive assembly 650 as described above. For example, like worm screw 608 described above, worm screw 708 has incomplete teeth, in that a portion 708a along its circumference lacks teeth. However, in this embodiment, via action on the drive assembly 750 (e.g. by external driver) , a pin 702 is movable between an engaged or extended position without activation of the motor 704. In an exemplary embodiment, the external driver comprises a manual crank 720 which is rotatably mounted to gear 710, such that the power screw moves in  response to movement of the helix gear when driven by crank 720. In this way, the pin 702 is driven to a retracted or disengaged position, for example, in response to motion of the power screw. As shown in FIG. 21B, for example, crank 720 may be rotatable clockwise or anti-clockwise (e.g. direction of arrow 723) , or may be translatable along a lateral direction (e.g. direction of arrow 725) . Additionally or optionally, as shown in FIGS. 21A and 21C, the external driver comprises a clip 721 coupled the crank 720 and the clip 721 defines an aperture 727 through which a cable (not shown) may extend to permit a user to mechanically cause the pin 702 is to move between an engaged or extended position without activation of the motor 704.

[0129] FIG. 22A-2B depict another exemplary motorized latch and drive assembly in accordance with aspects of the invention. The motorized latch, such as latch 800, is similar in several respects to latch 700 as described above. For example, the components of latch 800 generally correspond to those of the embodiments described above, such as those of latch 700. For example, latch 800 is intended for permitting or limiting access to a charge port installed in an electric vehicle, for example. Generally, latch 800 is generally rectangular in shape and is mounted over an opening, such as an opening formed in a charge socket of a vehicle. In an unlocked position of the latch 800, the electric vehicle is restricted from receiving charge from the charging station. In the locked position of the latch 800, the electric vehicle is not restricted from receiving charge from the charging station.

[0130] Further, latch 800 includes a drive assembly 850, the details and operation thereof generally correspond to those of drive assembly 750 discussed above. The embodiment of drive assembly 850 is similar in several respects to drive assembly 750 as described above. However, in this embodiment, via action on the drive assembly 850 (e.g. by an external driver comprising a cable 821) , a pin 802 is movable between an engaged or extended position without activation of the motor 804. In an exemplary embodiment, the external driver comprises the cable 821 which is connected to the power screw 818, such that the power screw 818 moves in response to movement of the helix gear 814 when driven by cable 821 (e.g. cable 821 pulled to drive helix gear 814) . In this way, the pin 802 is driven to a retracted or disengaged position, for example, in response to motion of the power screw 818 when actuated by cable 821 (i.e. without activation of motor 804) .
