Description

VAPING DEVICETECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The invention relates to vaping devices and particularly to vaping devices with component recognition and information verification systems as well as the vapor generating components of vaping devices.BACKGROUND

[0002] Vaping devices have emerged as an alternative to cigarette smoking. Conventional vaping devices include a base unit that contains the battery pack and a control unit. Conventional vaping devices also include a cartridge that is coupled to the base unit. The cartridge includes the liquid to be vaporized and a heater that vaporizes the liquid. However, vaping devices face several problems.

[0003] For example, the output switching of existing vaping devices is mostly done through a combination of screen display and button operation, which can easily cause consumers to output too high, leading to a burnt core, or not working in the best atomization state. Different flavors of e-liquid require different output power or voltage to achieve the best taste. In addition, existing vaping devices on the market easily lead to compatibility issues, seriously damaging the interests of the original company.

[0004] Also, current vaping devices in the market tend to be universally compatible, which significantly undermines the interests of the original launching companies. Also, the output switching in these devices predominantly relies on screen displays and button combinations, posing a risk of excessively high output that may result in a burnt core, or not operating in the optimal atomization state.

[0005] Vaping devices in circulation in the market are often easily imitated. In addition counterfeit parts can lead to compatibility issues, seriously damaging the interests of the original company. In addition, existing vaping devices are susceptible to being disassembled and reassembled by unauthorized individuals, which may harm the interests of the sellers.

[0006] In addition, due the their small sizes, vaping devices are susceptible to being lost, which may result in financial loss to the user.

[0007] Existing vaping devices may cause burnt taste when the e-liquid is nearly depleted, significantly reducing the user experience. Additionally, there is no indication of inhalation volume during use.SUMMARY

[0008] Inventors propose systems and method that solve the problems discussed above.

[0084] Figs. 1A and 1B illustrate an exemplary vaping device 10 configured to vaporize a liquid infused with one or more active materials. It is contemplated that the vaping device 10 may be, for example, an electronic cigarette, a vaping pen, a micro-vaping device, etc. The vaping device 10 may comprise a base 12 and a cartridge 14.

[0085] The base 12 may house the components needed to operate the vaping device 10. For example, the base 12 may include a power supply unit 16, which may be in the form of a rechargeable battery, non-rechargeable battery, or an electrical connection for an external power supply. The base 12 may also include a control unit 18 configured to regulate the components of the vaping device 10. The control unit 18 may be in the form of a microchip, a microcomputer, etc. The base 12 may also include a receptacle 20 configured to receive at least a portion of the cartridge 14. It is contemplated that the base 12 may be designed to be used with different cartridges 14. It is further contemplated that the base 12 may include a heating element (not shown) and / or a reservoir (not shown) that may be supplemental to or be used instead of a reservoir in the cartridge 14.

[0086] The cartridge 14 may include a user interface or mouthpiece 22 through which the user receives vapor infused with the active material from the vaping device 10. The cartridge 14 may also include a reservoir 24 that contains a vaping liquid, which may be infused with the active material. The vaping liquid may be in the form of water, oil, or other liquid capable of dissolving the active material or holding the active material in a suspension. In addition, the active material may include at least one of the following: flavoring agents, medications, tobacco, tobacco extract, or any other chemical that can be dissolved in the vaping liquid.

[0087] The cartridge 14 may also include a heater 26 configured to heat and vaporize the vaping liquid. It is contemplated that the heater 26 may alternatively be  located in the base 12. In addition, the base 12 may include the reservoir 24 or a supplemental reservoir that is used in conjunction with the reservoir 24 of the cartridge 14. The cartridge 14 may also include electronics 28 configured to convey power from the base 12 to the heater 26. The electronics 28 may also include a microprocessor and / or microchip that controls the operation of the heater 26. The microprocessor and / or microchip may also contain information about the cartridge 14, information about the vaping liquid in the cartridge 14, and / or usage of the cartridge 14.

[0088] The cartridge 14 may be coupled to the base 12 at a connection side 29. For example, the connection side 29 of the cartridge 14 may be inserted into the receptacle 20 of the base 12. The connection side 29 of the cartridge 14 may include a first electrical connection 30 that is configured to be coupled to a second electrical connection 31 located in the receptacle 20 or any other portion of the base 12 configured to be coupled to the connection side 29 of the cartridge 14. The first and second electrical connections 30 and 31 may be positioned to complete a circuit from the base 12 to the cartridge 14 upon the cartridge 14 being fully received by the receptacle 20 or being otherwise coupled to the base 12.

[0089] In addition, the vaping device 10 may provide a signal to the user indicating that the cartridge 14 has been fully coupled to the base 12 (e.g., fully received by the receptacle 20) . The signal may be in the form of an optical signal, a tactile signal (e.g., vibration) , and / or a audible signal (e.g., a clicking sound) .

[0090] The cartridge 14 and / or the base 12 may include an input / output device that allows the user to read information about the vaping device 10. The input / output device may also allow the user to manually adjust the settings of the vaping system. The input / output device may include, for example, a screen display, buttons, and / or switches. It is contemplated that the screen display may be a touch screen.

[0091] As discussed above, the base 12 may be usable with different cartridges 14. Different cartridges 14 may include different types of vaping liquid. Given that each type of vaping liquid may be infused with a particular active material or particular combination of active materials, the required heating profile for vaporizing the vaping liquid may be different for different types of vaping liquids. In addition, it may be desired  to use only certified cartridges 14 to ensure that the cartridge 14 is compatible with the base 12 and that the cartridge 14 is not counterfeit. Accordingly, it may be desired for the base 12 to contain electronics that identify the cartridge 14 and the composition of the vaping liquid contained therein.

[0092] Fig. 2 illustrates one exemplary system for identifying the cartridge 14. For this configuration, the base 12 may include a color (or light wavelength) recognition assembly 32, which may include a light source 34, a color (or wavelength) sensor 36, and the control unit 18.

[0093] The light source 34 may be in the form of a light emitting diode (LED) or other compact source of light that emits white light and is capable of being positioned within the housing of the base 12. The light source 34 may be positioned so that light emitted by the light source 34 may reach a surface 40 of the cartridge 14 when the cartridge 14 is received within the receptacle 20 or otherwise coupled to the base 12. For example, the light source 34 may be positioned on or within a wall of the receptacle 20. In addition, the receptacle 20 (or other surface positioned to be in contact with the cartridge 14 when coupled to the base 12) may include a transparent wall or window through which light from the light source 34 may be directed to reach the surface 40 of the cartridge 14.

[0094] The color sensor 36 may be positioned to receive the light from the light source 34 that is reflected off of the surface 40 of the cartridge 14. In addition, the color sensor 36 may be in the form of, for example, a photo-sensitive microchip on a printed circuit board. The color sensor 36 may detect a wavelength and / or an intensity of the light, which may be analyzed by the control unit 18 to determine the color of the surface 40 of the cartridge 14. It is contemplated that the light source 34 and the color sensor 36 may be on the same printed circuit board. In addition, the color sensor 36 may be configured sense only color on the RGB scale and may filter out ultraviolet and infrared light. It is further contemplated that the color sensor 36 may sense ultraviolet and infrared light. In addition, the light source 34 may alternately emit, red, green, and blue light, and the color sensor 36 may determine the color of the surface 40 of the cartridge 14 by determining the strength of the signal of each color of light.

[0095] The control unit 18 may include a microprocessor and may receive signals from the color sensor 36 indicative of the color of the surface 40 of the cartridge 14. Upon determining the color of the surface 40, the control unit 18 may reference a look up table or other type of data set stored within the control unit 18 that corresponds to the color detected by the color sensor 36. The table may include information such as, for example, the content of the vaping liquid (i.e., what type of active material is in the vaping liquid) and the heating profile to be applied to the heater for the type of vaping liquid present in the cartridge 14. It is contemplated that the control unit 18 may be positioned on the same printed circuit board as the color sensor 36. It is also contemplated that the color sensor 36 may be part of the control unit 18.

[0096] The surface 40 of the cartridge 14 may be in the form of a cap on the connection side 29 of the cartridge 14. The cap may be permanently attached to the cartridge 14 or may be removable from the cartridge 14. Alternatively, at least a portion of the connection side 29 may be painted or dyed to a particular color. It is also contemplated that part or all of the cartridge 14 may be covered by a colored film. The color of the surface 40 may correspond to the type of active material in the vaping liquid. For example, for a vaping liquid with nicotine, the color of the surface 40 may be red. For a vaping liquid with a particular flavoring agent, the color of the surface 40 may be blue. By associating a particular color with a particular liquid composition, the control unit 18 may be able to select an ideal set of preset output parameters for that particular vaping liquid.

[0097] In addition, the light source 34 may be automatically activated by the cartridge 14 being fully received within the receptacle 20 or otherwise coupled to the base 12. The coupling of the cartridge 14 to the base 12 may trigger a switch that may in turn activate the light source 34, which enables the control unit 18 to select the preset output parameters. Alternatively, the light source 34 may be activated by (or when) the vaping device 10 is powered on by the user. This may be achieved by the user interacting with the input / output device on the cartridge 14 or base 12.

[0098] It is contemplated that the connection side 29 of the cartridge 14 may include the light source 34 instead of the base 12. In this configuration, the light source  34 may produce a unique color (or wavelength) of light that is detected by the color sensor 36. For example, the light source may be an LED that produces light in a particular color or wavelength. Alternatively, the cartridge 14 may include a color filter that allows only one color or wavelength of light to penetrate the filter and reach the color sensor 36. The color of the light emitted by the light source 34 may be unique to the cartridge 14 and / or the liquid contained within the cartridge 14.

[0099] Fig. 3 illustrates another exemplary system for identifying the cartridge 14. Similar to the configuration illustrated in Fig. 2, the base 12 may include the color recognition assembly 32. Also similar to the configuration illustrated in Fig. 2, the surface 40 of the cartridge 14 may be arranged to have a predetermined color. For example, the surface 40 may be thermochromic. For example, the surface 40 may be coated with a thermochromic ink, paint, or dye. Alternatively, the surface 40 may be covered by a thermochromic film. It is contemplated that the material from which the cartridge housing may be formed may be a thermochromic material. Regardless of the composition of the thermochromic material, the thermochromic material may be positioned relative to the heater 26 so that heat generated by the heater 26 may cause the thermochromic material to change colors.

[0100] The surface 40 of the cartridge 14 may have an initial color when not subjected to heat from the heater 26. Similar to the system illustrated in Fig. 2, the initial color of the surface 40 may be used to identify the cartridge 14 and the vaping liquid contained therein. The control unit 18 may reference a look up table or other type of data set stored within the control unit 18 that corresponds to the initial color detected by the color sensor 36. The table may include information such as, for example, the content of the vaping liquid (i.e., what type of active material is in the vaping liquid) and the heating profile to be applied to the heater for the type of vaping liquid present in the cartridge 14.

[0101] While the initial color of the thermochromic material may be used to identify the cartridge 14 and the vaping liquid contained therein, the thermochromic material may transition to a second color when the surface 40 is subjected to heat from the heater 26. Such a color transition from the initial color to the second color may be used by the control unit 18 to verify the authenticity of the cartridge 14. By verifying the  authenticity of the cartridge 14, the control unit 18 may prevent counterfeit and / or incompatible parts from being used with the base 12.

[0102] Fig. 4 illustrates an exemplary method 100 that may be used with the thermochromic material. The method 100 may begin with the cartridge 14 being coupled to the base 12 either by being inserted into the receptacle 20 or otherwise being coupled to the base 12 (step 110) . Coupling the cartridge 14 to the base 12 may trigger the light source 34 to illuminate the surface 40 so that the color sensor 36 can sense the color of the surface 40 (step 112) . The control unit 18 may then analyze the color of the surface 40 and determine the composition of the vaping liquid and the heating profile for the vaping liquid (step 114) . Once the heating profile is determined, the heater 26 may be actuated according to the heating profile (step 116) . It is contemplated that the system illustrated in Fig. 2 may operate according to this portion of method 100. Step 110 may be performed each time a cartridge 14 is coupled to the base 12.

[0103] For the system illustrated in Fig. 3, the method 100 may continue to step 118 in which a count down or timer is actuated. The control unit 18 may wait a predetermined amount of time before performing the next step. For example, 5 to 60 seconds, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, etc. The predetermined amount of time may be the minimum amount of time or an average amount of time needed by the heater 26 to generate enough heat to change the color of the surface 40. Once the predetermined amount of time has elapsed after the heater 26 has been actuated, the light source 34 may illuminate the surface 40 and the color sensor 36 may detect the color of the surface 40 (step 120) .

[0104] The control unit 18 may analyze the color of the surface 40 detected by the color sensor 36 in step 120 and compare the color to the color sensed in step 112. If the color of the surface 40 has not changed, the control unit 18 may determine that the cartridge 14 is a counterfeit part or is not compatible with the base 12 and may terminate all operations of the vaping device 10 (step 124) until another cartridge 14 is coupled to the base 12. Then the method 100 may be repeated.

[0105] However, if the control unit 18 determines that the color of the surface 40 has changed, the heater 26 may continue to be operated according to the heating profile  (step 126) until the cartridge 14 is removed from the base 12. If another cartridge is coupled to the base 12, the method 100 may be repeated.

[0106] Alternatively, the control unit 18 may analyze the second color of the surface 40 and determine whether the second color matches an expected color (step 128) . If the controller 18 determines that the second color of the surface 40 does not match the expected color, the control unit 18 may determine that the cartridge 14 is a counterfeit part or is not compatible with the base 12 and may terminate all operations of the vaping device 10 (step 124) until another cartridge 14 is coupled to the base 12. Then the method 100 may be repeated.

[0107] However, if the control unit 18 determines that the second color of the surface 40 matches the expected color, the heater 26 may continue to be operated according to the heating profile (step 126) until the cartridge 14 is removed from the base 12. If another cartridge is coupled to the base 12, the method 100 may be repeated.

[0108] It is contemplated that a magnetic and / or optical ink may be printed on the cartridge 14. It is further contemplated that the magnetic and / or optical ink may form an image, pattern, and / or code printed on the surface 40. The magnetic or optical ink may themselves act as a watermark.

[0109] For configurations in which optical or magnetic ink is printed on the surface 40, the base 12 may include a color recognition system 70 (Fig. 5) . The color recognition system 70 may be similar to the color recognition system 32 except that the color recognition system 70 may include an additional light source 72. The light sources 34 and 72 may be positioned so that light from the light source 34 illuminates the surface 40 from a first angle and light from the light source 72 illuminates the surface 40 from a second angle. The color of the optical ink may appear to be different from different angles. Accordingly, the light originating from the light source 34 and reflected off of the surface 40 may be detected as a first color by the color sensor 36, while the light originating from the light source 72 and reflected off of the surface 40 may be detected as a second color by the color sensor 36.

[0110] The effect of the optical or magnetic ink may be similar to the thermochromic material. That is the color (or apparent color) of the surface 40 may  change, and the detection of the change in color may indicate that the cartridge 14 is a certified and / or authentic part.

[0111] During operation, the light source 34 and the light source 72 may be alternately activated so that the color sensor 36 alternately receives reflected light originating at the light source 34 and the light source 72. If the control unit 18 identifies changes in the color of the surface 40, the control unit 18 will activate the heater 26 and will transmit operational information to the electronics in the cartridge 14. However, if the control unit 18 does not detect any changes in the color of the surface 40, the control unit 18 will disable the vaping device 10.

[0112] Fig. 6 illustrates another exemplary system for identifying the cartridge 14 being used. As can be seen, the base 12 may include a radio frequency identification (RFID) reader 42. In addition, the cartridge 14 may include an RFID tag 44 that is read by the RFID reader 42.

[0113] The RFID reader 42 may be an active reader that transmits interrogator signals 46 within a predetermined range. Alternatively, the RFID reader 42 may be a passive reader that receives signals transmitted from the RFID tag 44. The range of the interrogator signals 46 or the range of detecting signals from the RFID tag 44 may be within close proximity of the perimeter of the base 12. For example, the range of the RFID reader 42 may be limited to the receptacle 20 so that the interrogator signals 46 only reach the RFID tag 44 when the cartridge is received by the receptacle 20 or is otherwise coupled to the base 12. Alternatively, the range of the interrogator signals 46 or the range of reception of the RFID reader 42 may be well beyond the perimeter of the base 12.

[0114] The RFID tag 44 may be positioned in a location within the cartridge 14 to receive the interrogator signal 46 from the RFID reader 42. It is contemplated that in configurations in which the RFID reader 42 is passive, the RFID tag 44 may be active and may constantly emit an information signal 48. In configurations in which the RFID reader 44 is active, the interrogator signal 46 may cause the RFID tag 44 to emit the information signal 48. The RFID tag 44 may be configured so that the range of the RFID tag 44 (range of signal emission and / or range of signal reception) may be limited to close  proximity of the perimeter of the cartridge 14 so that the RFID tag 44 only receive the interrogator signals 46 and / or only emit the information signals 48 when the cartridge 14 is received within the receptacle 20 or is otherwise coupled to the base 12. Alternatively, the range of the RFID tag 44 may extend well beyond the perimeter of the cartridge 14.

[0115] The RFID tag 44 may comprise a storage device and an antenna. Information relating to the identification and operation of the cartridge 14 may be stored on the storage device. The stored information may include, for example, the composition of the vaping liquid stored in the cartridge 14, heating profile information, serial number, etc. The information may also include traceable cartridge information such as where the cartridge was manufactured and an identification number.

[0116] It is contemplated that the stored information may be encrypted or the stored information may include an encrypted code that must be decrypted before the stored information can be read. The encryption may render the information stored in the RFID tag 44 unreadable without an encryption key. Such an encryption key may be stored in the control unit 18. The encryption of the information stored in the RFID tag 44 may ensure that only certified components are used and may limit or prevent the use of counterfeit components.

[0117] It is contemplated that the RFID tag 44 may be initially disabled and only allowed to operate once the control unit 18 has unlocked the encryption. In addition, the RFID tag 44 may include a programable chip that only includes identification information (e.g., the serial number or other identification marker) . Upon receiving the identification information through the RFID reader 42 (or unlocking the encryption to read the identification information) , the control unit 18 may transmit an activation signal to the RFID tag 44 or other type of microchip located in the cartridge 14 that activates the cartridge 14. The activation signal may include operational information such as a heating profile for the liquid stored in the cartridge 14.

[0118] Fig. 7 illustrates another exemplary system for identifying the cartridge 14 being used. In this configuration, the base 12 may include an imaging sensor 50 configured to scan an image, pattern, or code printed on the surface 40 of the cartridge 14.

[0119] The imaging sensor 50 may be a CMOS sensor and may include a color array filter 52 sandwiched between a micro lens 54 and a pixel array 56. A signal from the pixel array 56 may be sent to a signal noise reducer (correlated double sampling device) 58, which may in turn transmit the signal to an analog signal chain 60 that includes an amplifier 62 and an analog to digital converter 64. The digitized signal may then be transmitted to an image signal processor 66. From the image signal processor 66, the imaging signal may be sent to the control unit 18 for analysis.

[0120] The base 12 may also include the light source 34 positioned to illuminate the surface 40 of the cartridge 14 when the cartridge 14 is received by the receptacle 20 or otherwise coupled to the base 12. The light reflected from the surface 40 of the cartridge 14 may be received by the image sensor 50 through a lens 54. A pattern or code may be printed on the surface 40 of the cartridge 14. The pattern or code may contain information such as identification data, the composition of the liquid in the cartridge 14, and the heating profile for the liquid in the cartridge 14. The printed code may also be encrypted. The control unit 18 may activate the cartridge14 based on the identification.

[0121] Fig. 8 illustrates another exemplary system for identifying the cartridge 14 being used. In this configuration, the base 12 may include the imaging sensor 50, which is configured to detect a digital watermark 68 embedded within an image, pattern, or code printed on the surface 40 of the cartridge 14. The digital watermark 68 may be invisible to the naked eye and / or be camouflaged so as to be indistinguishable to a user from the image, pattern, or code printed on the surface 40 of the cartridge 14. This way, the user may be unaware that there is a digital watermark on the cartridge 14.

[0122] The digital watermark 68 may be in any form that is detectable by the imaging sensor 50. For example, the digital watermark 68 may be in the form of a pattern of pixels scattered throughout the pattern or image on the surface 40 of the cartridge 14. In yet another example, the digital watermark may be in the form of a code or symbol embedded within the image or pattern.

[0123] Similar to the system illustrated in Fig. 7, the image sensor 50 may detect the image, pattern, or code on the surface 40 of the cartridge 14. The control unit 18 may analyze the signal generated by the image sensor 50 and extract the digital watermark 68  from the imaging data generated by the image sensor 50. If the control unit 18 determines that the digital watermark 68 is present, the control unit 18 may actuate the heater 26 on the cartridge 14 and allow the vaping device 10 to operate. However, if the control unit 18 fails to detect a digital watermark from the image data generated by the image sensor 50, the control unit 18 may disable the cartridge 14, The control unit 18 may also disable the cartridge 14 if the control unit 18 detects a digital watermark 68 but the digital watermark 68 does not match an expected digital watermark 68.

[0124] It is contemplated that the digital watermark may be used as an alternative to the magnetic and / or optical ink discussed above.

[0125] Another issue facing manufacturers and distributers of vaping systems is the use of such devices by minors. Different jurisdictions have different age limits for the purchase and consumption of certain controlled substances. Also, different types of controlled substances have different age restrictions. For example, in some jurisdictions, the age limit for the purchase of tobacco products may be 18, while in other jurisdictions, the age limit may be 21. Also, the age limit for the purchase of a tobacco product in a particular jurisdiction may be 21 while the age limit for a nicotine-free product might be 18.

[0126] Fig. 9 illustrates a system 200 for verifying the age and identity of a user prior to activating a vaping device 10. The system 200 may include an identification device 210, a cartridge identification device 211, a verification device 212, and a remote server 214.

[0127] The identification device 210 may be any type of documentation such as a driver’s license or government issued identification card. The identification device may also be in the form of a portable computer (e.g., cellular phone or tablet) . The identification device 210 may include identity information (e.g., name, description, etc. ) of the person purchasing and / or using the vaping device 10, the person’s birthdate and / or age, and / or biometric information (e.g., a fingerprint or facial scan) . When purchasing the vaping device 10, the base 12, and / or the cartridge 14, the person may present the identification device 210 to a seller and / or may present the identification device 210 directly to the verification device 212.

[0128] The cartridge identification device 212 may be a pattern, code, image, color, or other type of identification marking that may be indicative of the vaping device 10 and / or the composition of the vaping liquid contained therein. The cartridge identification device 212 may be located on an exterior surface of the vaping device 10 and / or the packaging of the vaping device 10 so that the cartridge identification device 212 is visible. The information contained within the cartridge identification device 212 may be a serial number, source of manufacture, the composition of vaping liquid contained therein, etc.

[0129] The information from the identification device 210 and the cartridge identification device 211 may be scanned into the verification device 212. The verification of the identification and age information may be performed by the seller or the purchaser and may be accomplished by scanning the information using a scanner. The scanner may scan an optical image of the information or a code (e.g., UPC code or QR code) that includes the identification and age information. It is also contemplated that the information may be stored in an RFID tag and that the information may be scanned by using an RFID reader.

[0130] Once the information is scanned, the person’s birthdate may be compared to a database to verify that the person is old enough to purchase the vaping device 10. For example, the database may be specific to the particular jurisdiction where the vaping device 10 is being purchased. The identification and age information may be compared to age requirements specific to the current jurisdiction and specific to the particular vaping device 10 being purchased. It is contemplated that the verification device 212 may include both the scanner and the database. Alternatively, the scanner and database may be separate components.

[0131] Once the identification and age information has been compared to the database and verified, the verified data may be transmitted to the remote server 214. The data uploaded to the remote server 214 may be used to control the usage of the vaping device 10 so that the vaping device 10 can only be activated by the user. For example, the vaping device 10 may include a microchip and communication device to communicate with the remote server 214. The communication may be by WIFI or other type of  communication format. The vaping device 10 may require the user to enter identification information or provide biometric information (e.g., facial scanning or fingerprint) before the vaping device 10 can be activated. Upon the biometric or identification information being provided to the vaping device 10, the vaping device 10 may communicate with the remote server 214 to confirm that the user is permitted to use the vaping device 10 and the microchip may activate the vaping device 10.

[0132] Vaping devices are small, portable devices that are susceptible to misplacement. When misplaced, vaping devices can be difficult to find. In addition, if a third party finds the vaping device, the third party may keep the vaping device for themselves. Fig. 10 illustrates a vaping device 10 with a locating system for when the vaping device 10 is misplaced.

[0133] The base 12 may include a communication module 216 that is designed to communicate with a handheld device 218 such as, for example, a mobile phone. The communication module 216 may be configured to transmit signals wirelessly according to any conventional communication standard. For example, the communication module 216 may be configured to transmit signals by way of a Bluetooth standard. In addition, the communication module 216 may transmit a location signal to the handheld device 218 in response to a request signal received from the handheld device 218. Alternatively, the communication module 216 may transmit a location signal regardless of whether the handheld device transmits a request signal.

[0134] The handheld device 218 may include a receiver 220 that receives the wireless communication from the base 12. The communication module 216 may have a range of, for example, 300 to 3000 feet. In addition, if the handheld device 218 is within the range of the communication module 216, the handheld device 218 may display the location of the vaping device 10. The display may indicate the location of the vaping device 10 relative to the handheld device 218.

[0135] It is contemplated that the handheld device 218 may indicate the location of the vaping device 10 relative to the handheld device 218 by means in addition to or instead of a visual indication. For example, the handheld device 218 may indicate the proximity of the vaping device 10 to the handheld device 218 by emitting a beep or other  sound at a particular frequency. The frequency and / or volume of the sound may change as the distance between the handheld device 218 and the vaping device 10 increases and decreases. The proximity of the handheld device 218 to the vaping device 10 may also be indicated by way of vibration. The frequency and / or intensity of the vibration may increase or decrease depending on the proximity of the handheld device 218 to the vaping device 10.

[0136] It is also contemplated that when the handheld device 218 is out of the range of the communication module 216 of the vaping device 10, the control unit of the vaping device 10 may disable the vaping device 10 so that it cannot be used while it is lost. The vaping device 10 can be automatically reactivated upon the handheld device 218 moving back within range of the communication module 216. Alternatively, the vaping device 10 may be manually reactivated by the user when the user finds the vaping device 10.

[0137] It is further contemplated that the vaping device 10 can be manually disabled by the user by way of the handheld device 218. For example, if the user determines that the vaping device 10 is lost, the user can send a disabling signal to the vaping device 10 through the handheld device 218. The vaping device 10 can be reactivated as discussed above.

[0138] It should be understood that the cartridge 14 may also include a communication module 216 in addition to or instead of the communication module 216 in the base 12.

[0139] Fig. 11 shows an electrical circuit 230 formed within the base 12 of the vaping device 10. The electrical circuit 230 may include the power supply unit 16, the control unit 18, and a switch or local conductive area 232 located on an interior surface of the housing of the base 12.

[0140] Upon initial startup, the control unit 18 may install firmware that allows the components of the vaping device 10 to operate. During operation, an electric current may flow through the circuit 230. However, the circuit 230 may be configured so that tampering with the housing of the base 12 may cause the switch 232 to open, thereby interrupting the flow of current through the circuit 230. Such tampering may involve  breaking apart or otherwise opening the housing of the base 12 to access internal components of the base 12. If the control unit 18 determines that the switch 232 is opened, the control unit 18 may disable the vaping device 10 by erasing the firmware that allows the components of the vaping device 10 to operate. This way, tampering with the housing of the base 12 will automatically render the vaping device unusable.

[0141] Fig. 12 illustrates a system that monitors the operation of the vaping device 10 to make sure that the vaping device 10 is operating within nominal parameters. In particular, the vaping device 10 may include a temperature sensor 240 in the cartridge 14 adjacent to the heater 26. The temperature sensor may be positioned to detect the temperature of the heater 26 or the temperature of the space adjacent to the heater 26. It is contemplated that the temperature sensor may be positioned to detect a temperature of the liquid or space inside the reservoir 24.

[0142] During operation, the control unit 18 may simultaneously transmit a signal to the cartridge 14 to energize the heater 26 according to a predetermined heating profile and determine the temperature of the heater 26. After a predetermined amount of time has passed (e.g., 5 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute, 2 minutes, etc. ) the control unit 18 may compare the temperature signals being transmitted by the temperature sensor 240 to the initial detected temperature. If the temperature has not changed, the control unit 18 may trigger an alarm and / or may disable the vaping device 10. However, if the temperature is determined to have changed, the vaping device 10 may continue operating.

[0143] Alternatively, the control unit 18 may wait until the predetermined amount of time has elapsed before analyzing the temperature signal generated by the temperature sensor 240. The detected temperature may be compared to an expected temperature or temperature range. If the detected temperature is different from the expected temperature or falls outside the expected temperature range, the control unit may trigger an alarm and / or disable the vaping device 10.

[0144] Fig. 13 illustrates a method 300 for preventing the user from consuming an excessive amount of nicotine over a particular amount of time. The method 300 may begin with the control unit 18 monitoring the cumulative amount of inhalation the user  has performed (step 310) . This may be achieved by implementing a “puff” count. A “puff” count is the number of times the user has inhaled through the mouthpiece 22.

[0145] The control unit 18 may determine that the user has inhaled by monitoring changes in the temperature of the heater 26. For example, an increase in the temperature of the heater 26 may indicate that the user is inhaling, and a return to the initial temperature may indicate that the inhalation has ceased. It is contemplated that the user’s inhalation may be determined by monitoring the airflow through the mouthpiece 22. This may be achieved by positioning a flow sensor or pressure sensor in the mouthpiece 22. An increase in airflow or air pressure may indicate that the user is inhaling, and a reduction in airflow or air pressure may indicate the end of the inhalation.

[0146] The control unit 18 may record the amount of time that has elapsed for the inhalation and add it to already recording inhalations to obtain a cumulative duration of inhalation. After each inhalation event, the control unit 18 may compare the cumulative duration of inhalation to a threshold (step 312) . If the cumulative duration of inhalation is below the threshold, the control unit 18 may continue to monitor the user’s inhalation events (step 310) .

[0147] However, if the cumulative duration of inhalation exceeds the threshold, the control unit 18 may disable and lock the vaping device 10 so that the vaping device 10 cannot be used (step 314) . Upon locking and disabling the vaping device 10, the control unit 18 may begin a timer or countdown (step 316) . The countdown may be allowed to elapse for a predetermined period of time (e.g., 30 seconds, 1 minute, 2 minutes, etc. ) . The control unit 18 may determine whether the determined period of time has elapsed (step 318) and may maintain the vaping device 10 in the disabled and locked state until the predetermined amount of time has elapsed. Once the predetermined amount of time has elapsed, the control unit 18 may restart the vaping device 10.

[0148] Fig. 14 illustrates another method 400 that monitors the amount of vaping liquid remaining in the reservoir 24. The method 400 may begin when the cartridge 14 is received within the receptacle 20 of the base 12 or is otherwise coupled to the base 12. Upon the cartridge 14 being coupled to the base 12, an electrical connection between the control unit 18 and the electronics 28 of the cartridge 14.

[0149] The electronics 28 may include a programable microchip on which data relating to cartridge usage may be stored. In one example, the data may be the volume of vaping liquid remaining in the reservoir 24. Accordingly, upon the electrical connection being created between the control unit 18 and the electronics 28, the control unit 18 may read the data stored on the microchip in the electronics 28 (step 410) .

[0150] The control unit 18 may compare the data to a threshold to determine whether there is a sufficient amount of liquid in the reservoir 24 (step 412) . If the volume of the liquid is greater than the threshold, the control unit 18 may activate the vaping device 10 (step 414) . Upon activating the vaping device 10, the control unit 18 may monitor the usage of the cartridge 14. This may be achieved by continuously monitoring the temperature of the heater 26. A sudden temperature rise may indicate that the user has started inhaling. In addition, a drop in temperature to a certain threshold may indicate that the user has stopped inhaling. The duration of this period may be recorded as the user's inhalation time, and the control unit 18 may calculate the user's inhalation time in real-time, convert that time into volume of liquid consumption, and compute the current remaining amount of liquid. The remaining amount of liquid is then updated in the cartridge's storage chip (step 416) .

[0151] The control unit 18 may continue to compare the level of the liquid in the reservoir 24 to a threshold (step 418) . If the volume of the liquid is still above the threshold, step 416 may be repeated. However, if the volume of liquid is below a threshold (Yes: step 412 and Yes: step 418) , the control unit 18 may trigger an alarm and / or lock or disable the vaping device 10 (step 420) . The threshold may be a minimal amount of liquid necessary to avoid burning the wick. It is also contemplated that the threshold may be zero.

[0152] Turning to the functionality of the cartridge itself, vaping cartridges often utilize wicks or wicking structures to supply a metered volume of the vaping liquid to the heating element for vaporization. In particular, wicking structures are typically hydrophilic and transport the vaping liquid to the heating element by way of capillary action. In addition, as discussed above, the vaping liquid may be infused with an active material such as, for example, flavoring agents, medications, tobacco, tobacco extract, or  any other chemical that can be dissolved in the vaping liquid. Thus, the flavor or taste of the vapor typically originates from the liquid.

[0153] However, the flavor and vaping experience can be enhanced by modifying the wicking structure so that the wicking structure generates the flavor alone or in conjunction with the vaping liquid. Figs. 15A and 15B illustrate an exemplary wicking structure 500 configuration that enhances the flavor and user’s experience.

[0154] As illustrated, the wicking structure 500 may include a multi-layer construction with a first textile or hydrophilic layer 502, a second textile or hydrophilic layer 504, and an active material layer 506 sandwiched between the first and second textile layers 502, 504. It should be understood that although only three layers are illustrated, more or fewer layers may be included. In addition, the wicking structure 500 may include a plurality of active material layers 506.

[0155] The first and second textile layers 502, 504 may be formed from hydrophilic material such as, for example, natural or synthetic cotton. In addition, the active material layer 506 may be made of herbal plant material (e.g., tobacco) , flavor additives, medicine, etc. In addition, the first and second textile layers 502, 504 may be greater than or less than the thickness of the active material layer 506. Also, all layers of the wicking structure 500 may be substantially equal. The lengths of all of the layers of the wicking structure 500 may be substantially the same. Alternatively, the length of the active material layer 506 may be less than the first and second textile layers 502, 504.

[0156] The wicking structure 500 may be formed into any shape. For example, the configuration illustrated in Fig. 15A has a substantially planar structure (e.g., rectangular) . It is contemplated that the wicking structure 500 may be bent so that both ends meet and form a seam 508. The ends may be secured to each other by way of adhesive, chemical bonding, mechanical fasteners, etc. In this configuration, the wicking structure 500 may have a cylindrical shape with a cavity in the center. The first textile layer 502 may form an outer layer, the second textile layer 504 may form an inner layer, and the active material layer 506 may form a middle layer. It is further contemplated that the cylindrical shape may be continuous without the seam 508.

[0157] The wicking structure 500 may receive the vaping liquid through the first and / or second textile layer 502, 504 and may flow along a length of the wicking structure 500. While flowing through the wicking structure 500, the liquid may become infused with the active material from the active material layer 506. For configurations in which the vaping liquid is not initially infused with active material, the active material layer 506 may be the sole source of active material in the vaping fluid. For configurations in which the vaping liquid is infused with active material prior to being received by the wicking structure 500, the active material layer 506 may supplement the active material infused vaping liquid. It is also contemplated that the vaping liquid may provide one type of active material, while the active material layer 506 of the wicking structure 500 may provide another type of active material (or the active material in the vaping liquid may be the same as the active material in the active material layer 506) . In addition, the first and / or second textile layers 502, 504 may include tobacco particles imbedded in the natural or synthetic cotton.

[0158] Prolonged exposure to the vaping liquid could cause the wicking structure 500 or the different layers of the wicking structure 500 to deteriorate. Accordingly, exposing the wicking structure 500 to the vaping liquid prior to the vaping device being used could result in the wicking structure 500 being in a deteriorated state before the user is able to use the vaping device. Figs. 16 and 17 illustrate configuration that prevents the above defect from occurring.

[0159] Figs. 16 and 17 illustrate a modular cartridge 510 that includes a reservoir module 512 and a heating core module 514. The reservoir module 512 and the heating core module 514 may be assembled and / or manufactured separately and then coupled together when a user is ready to use the modular cartridge 510. In addition, the modular cartridge 510 may be structurally similar to the cartridge 14 previously described. Accordingly, it should be understood that the components of the cartridge 14 and the components may be used with the modular cartridge 510 and vice versa. In addition, the heating core module 514 may form the connection side 29 and the surface 40 of the cartridge 510.

[0160] The reservoir module 512 may be the part of the modular cartridge 510 in which vaping fluid is stored and may include a reservoir 516, a central chamber 518, a user interface or mouthpiece 520, and a receptacle 522. The reservoir 516 may be in the form of a chamber configured to contain a liquid, which may be in the form of water, oil, or other liquid capable of being vaporized. It is contemplated that the liquid may be provided with or without an active material. If an active material is provided with the liquid, the active material may be dissolved or held in suspension within the liquid. The active material may include at least one of the following: flavoring agents, medications, tobacco, tobacco extract, or any other chemical that can be dissolved in the liquid.

[0161] The reservoir 516 may be enclosed by the outer housing of the reservoir module 512 and may surround the central chamber 518. The central chamber 518 may be sized and shaped to receive a heating core 524 of the heating core module 514. In addition, the interior of the central chamber 518 may be separated from the reservoir 516 by a barrier or wall assembly 526. The barrier 526 may include a liquid permeable portion 528 and a liquid impermeable portion 530. The liquid permeable portion 528 may be located between the liquid impermeable portion 530 and the mouthpiece 520. This way, even though the entirety of the reservoir 516 may surround the central chamber 518, liquid from the reservoir 516 may only be able to enter the central chamber 518 at one end while the other end of the central chamber 518 remains protected from being inundated with the liquid in the reservoir 516.

[0162] The liquid permeable portion 528 may be made of any material that allows the passage of the liquid in the reservoir 516 to flow into the central chamber 518. For example, the liquid permeable portion 528 may be made of a mesh material or a solid material with multiple openings or pores. It is also contemplated that the liquid permeable portion 528 may be made of a porous material. In one aspect, the liquid permeable portion 528 may be rigid and made of a metal such as, for example, steel.

[0163] The liquid impermeable portion 530 may be in the form of sealing bracket. The sealing bracket may be made of silicone, rubber, or any other elastomeric material that is capable of sealing the liquid impermeable portion of the central chamber 518 from the reservoir 516. The liquid impermeable portion 530 of the barrier 526 may create a  sealed off a portion 532 of the central chamber 518 that is protected from liquid infiltration with the remaining part of the central chamber 518 being a liquid receiving portion 535. In other words, a component positioned within the sealed off portion 532 (e.g., a wicking structure 500) would be protected from liquid infiltration, while a component positioned with in the liquid receiving portion 535 would be exposed to liquid from the reservoir 516.

[0164] An absorbing wicking structure 533 may be placed in the sealed off portion 532 of the central chamber 518 prior to the heating core module 514 being secured to the reservoir module 512. In this location, the absorbing wicking structure 533 may be isolated from the liquid in the reservoir 516 by the liquid impermeable portion 530 of the barrier 526 so that the absorbing wicking structure 533 is not susceptible to deterioration prior to the first use.

[0165] The mouthpiece 520 may be fluidly connected to the central chamber 518 by way of an airflow passage 534 so that vapor from the central chamber 518 may be received by the user through the mouthpiece 520. In addition, a sealing bracket 536 may be positioned between the barrier 526 and the airflow passage 534 to prevent liquid in the reservoir 516 from infiltrating the airflow passage 534.

[0166] The receptacle 522 includes a space for receiving the heating core module 514 and is separated from the reservoir 516 by a wall 538. The wall 538 may include a central opening 540 that is aligned with the central chamber 518 and sized to allow the heating core 524 to pass through the central opening 540 and into the central chamber 518 when the heating core module 514 is secured to the reservoir module 512. The wall 538 may also include one or more orifices 542. The orifices 542 may provide access to the interior of the reservoir 516 so that the reservoir 516 can be filled with the vaping liquid through the orifices 542. Conversely, the vaping liquid in the reservoir 516 can be emptied through the orifices 542. Corresponding plugs 544 may be inserted into the orifices 542 to retain the vaping liquid within the reservoir 516. The plugs 544 may be made of an elastomeric material and or any other material that can seal the orifices 542. In addition, it should be understood that the plugs 544 may be completely removable from the wall 538 or tethered to the wall 538.

[0167] The heating core module 514 may include the heating core 524 and the first electrical contact 30 as well as an optional microchip configured to regulate the power provided to the heating core 524.

[0168] Fig. 18 shows a more detailed view of the heating core 524. As can be seen, the heating core 524 includes a discharging wicking structure 545, a heating element 546, an airflow path 548, a bracket 550, electrical leads 552, and housing 554.

[0169] The heating element 546 may be wrapped around the wicking structure 500 so that liquid flowing through the discharging wicking structure 545 comes into contact with the heated surface of the heating element 546. Upon coming into contact with the heater surface of the heating element 546, the liquid may be vaporized and flow into the airflow passage 548. The heating element 546 may be any shape and merely has to come into contact with or be secured close enough to the discharging wicking structure 545 so that the liquid in the wicking structure is vaporized by the heat generated by the heating element 546. In addition, the heating element 546 may be formed of any electrically resistive material that will generate heat upon receiving an electrical current. For example, the material may be a metal. In addition, the material may be porous, mesh, solid, etc. Also, although only one airflow path 548 is shown in Fig. 18, there may be multiple airflow paths 548 in parallel with each other.

[0170] The heating element 546 may be electrically connected to the electrical leads 552, which may be in the form of wires or any other electrically conducting component. The electrical leads 552 may be connected to the first electrical contact 30 and / or the optional microchip located in the heating core module 514.

[0171] In addition, the discharging wicking structure 545, the heating element 546, and the electrical leads 552 may be held in place the bracket 550 and the housing 554.

[0172] Referring back to Fig. 16, the discharging wicking structure 545 and the heating element 546 may project beyond the main body of the heating core module 514 so that when the heating core module 514 is coupled to the reservoir module 512, the discharging wicking structure 545 and the heating element 546 automatically enter the central chamber 518. In addition, the discharging wicking structure 545 pushes the  absorbing wicking structure 533 into the liquid receiving portion 535 of the central chamber central chamber 518. Once the heating core module 514 is coupled to the reservoir module 512, an end of the absorbing wicking structure 533 may abut an end of the discharging wicking structure 545 to form a continuous wicking structure that extends from the liquid receiving portion 535 of the central chamber 518 to the sealed off portion 532 of the central chamber 518. In this configuration, the absorbing wicking structure 533 may receive the vaping liquid from the reservoir 516 by way of openings, slits and / or pores in the barrier 526. In addition, the discharging wicking structure 545 may receive the vaping liquid from the absorbing wicking structure 533.

[0173] The configuration illustrated in Figs. 16 and 17 allows for a smaller wicking structure to project from the heating core module 514. Alternatively, absorbing wicking structure 533 may be omitted, and the heating core module 514 may include a longer wicking structure that extends into the liquid receiving portion 535 of the central chamber 518 when the heating core module 514 is coupled to the reservoir module 512.

[0174] As discussed above, the receptacle 522 of the reservoir module 512 may be configured to receive at least a portion of the heating core module 514 so that an outer surface 556 of the heating core module 514 engages an interior surface 558 of the receptacle 522. The outer surface 556 of the heating core module 514 may include one or more projections 560. In addition, the interior surface 558 of the receptacle 522 may include corresponding recesses 562 that receive corresponding projections 560.

[0175] The projections 560 may be shaped so that a forward side of each projection 560 (i.e., the side that engages the reservoir module 512 first) is tapered and a rearward side of each projection 560 has an undercut. When the heating coil module 514 is inserted into the receptacle 522, the projections 560 may be pressed against the interior surface 558 of the receptacle 220. The tapered shape of the forward sides of the projections 560 may allow the projections 560 to slide along the interior surface 558 until the projections 560 reach the corresponding recesses 562. Upon reaching the corresponding recesses 562, the undercuts of the rearward surfaces of the projections 560 may engage the rearward walls of the recesses 562 so that the projections 560 interlock  with the rearward walls of the recesses 562, thereby securing the reservoir module 512 to the heating coil module 514.

[0176] In addition, to the recesses 562 and the projections 560, the heating core module 514 and the reservoir module 512 can be connected to each other by way of a hinged connection and / or a snap-fit connection.

[0177] In one configuration, the reservoir module 512 and the heating coil module 514 may be designed to be removable from each other after being coupled to each other so that the two components may be repeatably attached and detached from each other. However, this configuration is susceptible to “mixing and matching” reservoir modules 512 and heating core modules 514, which could result in the use of counterfeit parts or the distribution of used parts that have become defective through use.

[0178] To address this issue, the connection between the reservoir module 512 and the heating core module 514 may be designed so that the two modules cannot be separated once they are coupled without destroying the components securing the two modules together (e.g., the projections 560 and / or the recesses 562) , which would render the reservoir module 512 and the heating core module 514 unable to be secured with other modules, thereby rendering the modules useless.

[0179] It is also contemplated that the heating core 524 may be designed so that once the discharging wicking structure 545 is inserted into the central chamber 518, the discharging wicking structure 545 cannot be removed from the central chamber 518. In this configuration, removing the heating core module 514 from the reservoir module 512 would result in the discharging wicking structure 545 (along with the heating element 546) being torn from the heating core module 514, thereby rendering the heating core module 514 useless.

[0180] Figs. 19A and 19B show another configuration of the modular cartridge 510, particularly the reservoir module 512. The reservoir module 512 illustrated in Figs. 19A and 19B replaces the absorbing wicking structure 533 with a central plug 564.

[0181] The central plug 564 seals the central opening 540 to prevent liquid from the reservoir 516 from leaking out the central opening 540. In this configuration, liquid from the reservoir is allowed to infiltrate the entirety of the central chamber 518. When  the heating core module 514 is secured to the reservoir module 512, the wicking structure 500 pierces the seal formed by the central plug 564 to enter the central chamber 518. As the wicking structure 500 is inserted into the central chamber 518, the wicking structure 500 pushes against the liquid from the reservoir 516, thereby increasing the pressure of the liquid. Increasing the pressure of the liquid in the reservoir 516 increases the speed at which the liquid infiltrates the wicking structure 500.

[0182] Because the rate of liquid infiltration is increased, the amount of time it takes for the wicking structure 500 to become soaked with the liquid is reduced, and the likelihood of the vaping device being used before the wicking structure 500 is soaked with the liquid (which could result in clogging issues and the burning of the wicking structure 500) is reduced.

[0183] It should be understood that the configuration illustrated in Figs. 16 and 17 also increases the pressure of the liquid in the reservoir 516. In particular, pushing the absorbing wicking structure 533 into the liquid receiving portion 535 of the central chamber 518 pushes against the liquid, which in turn increases the pressure of the liquid.

[0184] It should be understood that rotating, pivoting, and other types of motion within the central chamber 518 will also increase the pressure of the liquid in the reservoir 516.

[0185] Figs. 20A and 20B illustrate an alternative sealing configuration for the reservoir 516. In this configuration, a sealing bracket 566 may be mounted to the wall 538. The sealing bracket 536 may surround the central chamber 518 and may include inlet portions 568 positioned over the filling orifices 542. The sealing bracket 566 may be formed from an elastomeric material (e.g., silicone) . It is contemplated that the sealing bracket 566 may include an elastomeric material overmolded on a plastic material. It is further contemplated that the sealing bracket 566 may be formed by way of double injection molding (two-shot molding) .

[0186] The inlet portions 568 may be in the form of indentations that project into the reservoir 516. The inlet portions 568 may include an open end 570 and an injection end 572. The injection end 572 of each inlet portion 568 may be closed and may be convex on a side facing the reservoir 516 and may be concave in a direction that faces the  open end 570. The reservoir 516 may be filled with liquid from a syringe or needle 574 that pierces the surface of the injection ends 572 of the inlet portions 568.

[0187] To fill the reservoir 516, a syringe 574 may enter one of the inlet portions 568 through the open end 572. The syringe 574 may then pierce the surface of the injection end to enter the interior of the reservoir 516. Once in the reservoir 516, the syringe may discharge the liquid into the reservoir 516. Alternatively, the syringe 574 may enter the reservoir 516 without any liquid and may draw liquid from the reservoir 516.

[0188] It is contemplated that the injection ends 572 may include one or more slits that are forced open when pressure acting on the concave side is greater than the force acting on the convex side of the injection end 572. In other words, the injection ends 572 may function as a one-way valve. Alternatively, the injection ends 572 of the inlet portions 568 (or the entirety of the inlet portions 568) may be made of self-sealing material that automatically closes any puncture holes made by the syringe 574 as soon as the syringe 574 is removed from the injection end 572.

[0189] Although the opening and the footprint of the inlet portions 568 are shown as circular, they may be any polygonal shape as long as the injection ends 572 have the convex / concave configuration illustrated in Figs. 20A and 20B.

[0190] Fig. 21 illustrates an exemplary reusable power supply unit 16 that may be used with the vaping device 10 and may be located in the base 12. The power supply unit 16 may include a battery cell 610, a printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) 612, an electrical connector 614, and a housing 616.

[0191] The battery cell 610 may be in the form of a rechargeable battery cell. For example, the battery cell 610 may have a lithium-ion core or other rechargeable type of core. The battery cell 610 may include a negative terminal or cathode 618 and a positive terminal or anode 620 located next to the cathode 618 on the same side of the battery cell 610. It is contemplated that the cathode 618 and anode 620 may be located on any configuration and any side of the battery cell 610. The cathode 618 and the anode 620 may be located on different sides of the battery cell 610. It is further contemplated that  the power supply unit 16 may include more than one battery cell 610 in parallel or in series.

[0192] The PCBA 612 may include a negative terminal negative contact 622 configured to be electrically connected to the anode 620. The PCBA 612 may also include a negative contact 624 configured to be electrically connected to the cathode 618. The electrical connections may be wired connections or a connection by physical contact between the surface of the battery cell 610 and the contacts 622, 624. The PCBA 612 may also be electrically connected to the electrical connector 614.

[0193] The housing 616 may enclose the battery cell 610, the PCBA 612, and the electrical connector 614. The housing may include a positive terminal or contact 628 and a negative terminal or contact 630. Although Fig. 21 shows the positive and negative contacts 628, 630 being located on opposite sides of the housing 616, the positive and negative contacts 628, 630 may be arranged in any configuration (e.g., side by side on the same side of the housing 616) . In addition, the housing 616 may include a base portion 632 and a cap portion 634. The cap portion 634 may be removable from the base portion 632 so that the battery cell 610 and the PCBA 612 can be inserted into the housing 616. The cap portion 634 may be secured to the base portion 632 by way of a snap fit or other fastening device. It is contemplated that the cap portion 634 may be hingedly attached to the base portion 632. Also, the housing 616 (e.g., the cap portion 634) may include an opening aligned with the electrical connector 614 so that a terminal or other electrical connecting device can be inserted through the housing 616 an into the electrical connector 614. It should be understood that the housing 616 may be formed as one integral unit without separate base and cap portions. It is contemplated that the housing 616 may have the dimensions of a AA or size 5 battery.

[0194] The configuration of the power supply unit 16 may allow for universal use so that the power supply unit 16 may be used with multiple types of vaping devices 10. In particular, the power supply unit 16 may be designed to accommodate input and output voltages that are different. For example, the battery cell 610 may be 1.5 volts, while the power discharged from the power supply unit 16 to the heater 26 may be 3.7 volts. It should be understood that the voltages disclosed above are only exemplary and other  voltages may be used. In other words, the power supply unit 16 may be designed to discharge multiple voltages that may be utilized by different vaping devices 10.

[0195] Fig. 22 is a block diagram of the power supply unit 16 that shows an exemplary way in which the power supply unit 16 operates. The power supply unit 16 may be charged by way of an outside power source being connected to the electrical connector 614. The electrical connector 614 may be in the form of a female connector. Alternatively, the electrical connector 614 may be in the form of a male connector. In addition, the electrical connector 614 may be a universal Serial Bus (USB) connector (for example a USB-C connector) .

[0196] The voltage entering the electrical connector 614 may have a voltage of 5 volts or other standard voltage. The electrical connector 614 may be connected to the PCBA 612, which may include a microchip 636. The microchip 636 may be configured to control the operation of the vaping device 10. For example, the microchip 636 may be configured to regulate the heater 26. The microchip 636 may also include a switch 638 and / or a voltage converter 640. It is contemplated that the switch 638 and / or the voltage converter 640 may be stand-alone components on the PCBA 612.

[0197] During charging, current may be received through the electrical connector 614 and may be directed to the PCBA 612 and the voltage converter 640. The voltage converter 640 may convert the voltage to the rating of the battery cell 610 (e.g., 1.5 volts) .

[0198] During discharge, current may be discharged from the battery cell 610 to the voltage converter 640, where the voltage can be changed to the voltage rating of the heater 26 (e.g., 3.7 volts) . Upon being converted, the voltage may be directed through the electrical connector 614 to the heater 26. It is contemplated that the PCBA 612 may include multiple voltage converters 640 to account for the different voltages. In addition, the switch 638 may switch between the different voltage converters.

[0199] It is further contemplated that the power supply unit 16 may receive an electrical current through the electrical connector 614 and discharge the electrical current through the housing 616 (e.g., through the positive contact 628) . This configuration is illustrated in Fig. 23.
