Abstract

The present invention provides a method to allow PON Port swap, allowing more distinct technologies to be available within the same optical path. The method allows the identification of the most suitable PON Port to be used in the swap, ensuring the correct operation of the current services and making new technology available for new or upgraded services. Operators can speed up the provisioning process with this enhanced methodology, as the PON Port swap will be executed automatically.

Description

[0001] DESCRIPTION

[0002] ENHANCED METHOD FOR xPON PORT TECHNOLOGY SWAP

[0003] FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0004] The present invention is enclosed in the field of network communications . Provides a new method to be used to change the PON ( Passive Optical Network) Port of GPON ( Gigabit Passive Optical Network) to XGSPON ( 10 Gigabit Symmetrical Passive Optical Network) technology based on inventory information .

[0005] PRIOR ART

[0006] Nowadays , most optical paths are GPON-based ( speeds up to IGbit / s ) . With current developments , it is possible to deliver services at higher speeds .

[0007] Most optical paths nowadays end in a GPON port , meaning that customers who wish to have higher-speed services might have some constraints to obtaining those services .

[0008] There have been developments to create new PON cards that allow GPON and XGSPON services to be used in the same PON port as they use di f ferent wavelengths , removing the current constraints .

[0009] PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED

[0010] Whenever a new or existing customer wishes to have an XGSPON-based service , it is necessary to evaluate i f the PON port supports XGSPON technology . I f not, there is a need to switch the PON port , which currently is a manual process . Being a manual task, it causes delays in providing the service . Therefore , it is most beneficial to have an enhanced method in network inventory systems to find a new PON port to support GPON-based and XGSPON-based services and switch existing services to this port .

[0011] SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0012] It is , therefore , the obj ect of the present invention to provide an enhanced method to automatically identi fy and switch the PON port to a new one compatible with existent technologies in the current PON port ( GPON) and the technology necessary to provide the new service (XGSPON) , this is , a GPON_XGSPON ( GPON + XGSPON) PON port . This methodology is not technology-bound, and it is prepared for the future when it will be possible to have more technologies with di f ferent combinations in the same PON port / card .

[0013] The method further defines how the source PON and target PON are identi fied and reserved and guarantees that those Ports are blocked from changes .

[0014] After defining the destination port , the actual information is saved ( to allow rollback) , and all the services on the GPON port are migrated to the XGSPON port . All the resources are now released to allow the provisioning of new services .

[0015] With this enhanced methodology, operators can adj ust the swap technology PON port process to their own commercial and technical strategy and improve their profit .

[0016] DESCRIPTION OF FIGURES

[0017] Figure 1 shows a current scenario - all services / customers are GPON-based . Figure 2 shows a scenario where a new customer requires an XGSPON-based service with no viability.

[0018] Figure 3 shows a scenario where a new customer requires a viable XGSPON-based service.

[0019] Figure 4 shows a scenario where a new customer requires an XGSPON-based service after the swap from a GPON PON port to an XGSPON PON port, or the optical path is already served by an XGSPON PON port.

[0020] DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0021] The figures show scenarios that are addressed by the current invention.

[0022] Figure 1 shows the current scenario (prior art) where all customers / services (100, 101, and 102) are connected (110, 111, and 112) to a GPON PON port (120) .

[0023] Figures 2 to 4 show several scenarios addressed by the current invention that illustrate the advantage of this method compared to the manual swap of the PON port.

[0024] Figure 2 shows a scenario where existent customers / services (200, 201, and 202) have GPON-based services (220, 221, and 222) , and a new customer (210) wishes to have an XSGPON-based service, but the central office only has GPON PON ports (230) . Therefore, the new service will have no XGSPON viability, meaning the new customer can drop out or choose to have a GPON-based service.

[0025] Figure 3, similar to Figure 2, shows a scenario where existent customers / services (300, 301, and 302) have GPON-based services (320, 321, and 322) , and a new customer (310) wishes to have an XSGPON-based service and the central office has GPON (330) and GPON_XGSPON (340) PON ports. Therefore, the new service will have XGSPON viability and can be provided to the customer, but it requires a PON Port swap . Figure 4 shows a scenario where some customers (400, 401, and 402) have GPON-based services (420, 421, and 422) and some (410) have an XGSPON-based service (450) all connected to a GPON_XGSPON PON port (440) . The central office also has GPON PON ports (430) . In this scenario, new customers can choose GPON-based or XGSPON-based services. This scenario also represents the scenarios in Figure 3 after the PON port swap from GPON to GPON_XGSPON.

[0026] DESCRIPTION OF THE EMBODIMENTS

[0027] The following description enables anyone skilled in the art to build and use the invention. Various modifications to the disclosed embodiments will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art. The general principles defined herein may be applied to other embodiments and applications without departing from the scope of the present invention. Thus, the present invention is not intended to be limited to the embodiments shown.

[0028] The most generic embodiment of the invention is a method for swapping PON Ports. The method chooses a compatible PON port to accomplish the PON Port swap, allowing the services provided with other technologies within the same central office termination PON.

[0029] The method assumes that only PON ports with the existing technologies plus the technology needed for the new service are eligible to provide services to all customers within the same central office termination PON.

[0030] Further most generic embodiment of the present method for choosing a compatible PON port to replace a PON port is characterised by the following steps: - Receiving a noti fication with the ODP ( Optical Distribution Point ) port and information of new service / service upgrade

[0031] - Obtaining the current PON port , the subj acent current technologies supported, and the technology required for the new service / service upgrade

[0032] - Fetching and filtering the list of available PON ports that share the same central of fice and are in service but not attached to any optical paths

[0033] - Assigning a priority tag to each PON port based on port / OLT ( Optical Line Termination) model and manufacturer

[0034] - Choosing a PON port with a high priority tag higher priority

[0035] - Blocking both original and new PON ports to prevent incoming services until the process ends .

[0036] Yet another embodiment of the method of the invention is adapted for choos ing a compatible PON port to replace a PON port , the steps for exchanging existing services between the original PON port and the obtained PON port are also described as follows :

[0037] - Obtaining a list of all associated services and correspondent resources ;

[0038] - Reserving the original resources to prevent use from other services until the process is terminated, hence allowing the termination of the PON port swap and maintaining the services in the original resources ;

[0039] - Reserving the destination resources that are PON port-based,

[0040] - Reserving the destination resources that are OLT- based; - Associating the optical path with the new PON Port , removing the original PON port ;

[0041] - Associating the services with the reserved destination resources ;

[0042] - Providing new service resources for field configuration;

[0043] - Releasing the reserved resources and unlocking original and destination PON ports .
