Description

SCROLL ASSEMBLY AND ELECTRONIC DEVICETECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The present disclosure is generally directed to a scroll assembly for an electronic device, and an electronic device comprising a scroll assembly.BACKGROUND

[0002] Scroll mechanisms in electronic devices, such as mechanical scroll wheels or scroll rollers, are known for their simplicity in structure and the clear tactile feedback they provide. The tactile feedback is particularly favorable for blind operation, where users rely on physical feedback for control. However, the integration of scroll mechanisms into electronic devices typically requires physical openings or holes in the housing of the electronic device. These physical openings or holes compromise the integrity of the housing of the device, posing significant challenges in maintaining the waterproofing and dustproofing capabilities of these electronic devices.

[0003] Attempts have been made to address these challenges, but these solutions often involve complex designs. Such designs not only add to the manufacturing cost but also are less suitable for use in portable and compact electronic devices, where simplicity and ease of use are important.

[0004] Therefore, there is a need for an improved scroll mechanism that overcomes at least some of these limitations.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0005] According to one aspect of the disclosure, a scroll assembly for an electronic device comprising a housing is provided. The scroll assembly comprises: a scroll mechanism rotatably mounted to the housing of the electronic device, with at least a portion of the scroll mechanism exposed externally to the housing; a magnet provided in the scroll mechanism; and at least one magnetic sensor fixedly mounted inside the  housing of the electronic device, magnetically coupled to the magnet through the housing therebetween and configured to detect the magnetic field of the magnet in a non-contact manner.

[0006] According to another aspect of the disclosure, an electronic device is provided. The electronic device comprises a housing containing electronic elements therein; and a scroll assembly according to any one of claims 1-13.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0018] As used herein, the singular forms “a” , “an” and “the” are intended to include the plural forms as well, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise. The terms “comprise” , “comprising” , “include” and / or “including” , as used herein, specify the presence of stated features, integers, steps, operations, elements, and / or components, but do not preclude the presence or addition of one or more other features, integers, steps, operations, elements, components, and / or combinations thereof. As used herein, the term “and / or” and the symbol “ / ” are meant to include any and all combinations of one or more of the associated listed items. Additionally, while the terms first, second etc., may be used herein to describe various elements, components, steps or calculations, these elements, components, steps, or calculations should not be limited by these terms, rather, these terms are only used to distinguish one element, component, step, or calculation from another. For example, a first component may be referred to as a second component, similarly a first calculation may be referred to as a second calculation; likewise, a first step may be referred to as a second step, all without departing from the scope of this disclosure.

[0019] To clarify the use in the pending claims and to hereby provide notice to the public, the phrases “at least one of , , ... and <N>” or “at least one of , , ... <N>, or combinations thereof” are defined by the Applicant in the broadest sense, superseding any other implied definitions herebefore or hereinafter unless expressly asserted by the Applicant to the contrary, to mean one or more elements selected from the group comprising A, B, ... and N, that is to say, any combination of one or more of the elements A, B, ... or N including any one element alone or in combination with one or more of the other elements which may also include, in combination, additional elements not listed.

[0020] The present disclosure provides a scroll assembly for an electronic device  and an electronic device comprising a scroll assembly. The scroll assembly comprises a scroll mechanism rotatably mounted to a housing of the electronic device, with at least a portion of the scroll mechanism externally accessible, a magnet provided in the scroll mechanism; and at least one magnetic sensor fixedly mounted inside the housing of the electronic device, magnetically coupled to the magnet through the housing therebetween.

[0021] The magnetic sensor, magnetically coupled to the magnet, is able to detect a change in the magnetic field from the magnet as the scroll mechanism turns. This allows the electronic device to be able to determine the rotation of the scroll roller. Meantime, this design, where the magnetic sensor is separated from the scroll roller (magnet) by the housing, eliminates the need for physical openings or holes in the housing as found in conventional scroll mechanism. Thus, this design maintains the integrity of the housing and enhances the waterproof and dustproof performance of the electronic device.

[0022] In one or more embodiments, the scroll assembly comprises two magnetic sensors. The two magnetic sensors both magnetically coupled to the magnet through the housing, and are spaced apart from each other and in a same plane perpendicular to a rotation axis of the scroll mechanism with the magnet. In one or more embodiments, the magnet is positioned and oriented with its polar direction, extending from a North pole to the South pole, perpendicular to the rotation axis of the scroll mechanism.

[0023] This arrangement enables the magnetic sensors to receive distinct magnetic field change signals from the magnet as the scroll mechanism rotates. As such, the electronic device is able to more accurately confirm rotational movements of the scroll roller by analyzing and cross-validating the distinct signals received by two sensors, and thus is beneficial in preventing false detections.

[0024] Fig. 1 illustrates an electronic device 100 according to one or more embodiments of the present disclosure. The electronic device 100 comprises a  housing 110 containing electronic elements therein, such as a controller (not shown) , and a scroll assembly 130 rotatably mounted to the housing 110. In operation, a user can control the electronic device 100 by rotating the scroll roller of the scroll assembly 130. In the embodiment shown, the electronic device 100 is a portable speaker, and the scroll assembly 130 is utilized for adjusting the speaker's volume. The housing 110 of the portable speaker is typically provided with an array of holes or openings in its front and / or rear surface to emit sound from within, which, for simplicity and clarity, are omitted in Fig. 1. In one or more other embodiments, the electronic device 100 may be any suitable electronic device, with the scroll assembly being used to perform a variety of adjustments, such as adjusting brightness of a screen or a light, or changing operation modes. In the embodiment shown, the scroll assembly 130 comprises a scroll roller. In one or more other embodiments, the scroll assembly 130 may comprise any suitable scroll mechanism, such as a scroll wheel.

[0025] Fig. 2A illustrates an exploded view of the electronic device 100 and Fig. 2B illustrates an exploded view of the scroll assembly 130. The scroll assembly 130 comprises a scroll roller 132, a base cover 160, a flexible PCB 170 and a tactile feedback assist assembly 180. The scroll roller 132 comprises a scroll roller body 134, a magnet 136, two end pieces 142, 142’, two rotation shafts 152, 152’, and a gear mounted on one rotation shaft 152. The tactile feedback assist assembly 180 comprises a base 182, a sealing ring 184, and a spring clip 186.

[0026] Fig. 3A is an enlarged view of the scroll assembly 130 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3B is a sectional view taken along line 3B-3B of Fig. 3A, and Fig. 3C is a sectional view taken along line 3C-3C of Fig. 3A.

[0027] As shown in Fig. 3B, the scroll assembly 130 comprises a scroll roller 132, which comprises a scroll roller body 134 and a magnet 136 located within the scroll roller body 134. The scroll roller body 134 further comprises an outer layer 134a made of elastomeric material, such as a rubber material. The magnet 136 is positioned and oriented with its polar direction, extending from the North (N) pole to the South  (S) pole, perpendicular to the rotation axis of the scroll roller 132. The scroll roller 132 is externally mounted on the housing 110 of the electronic device 100, positioned closely adjacent to the outer surface of the housing 110. The scroll assembly 130 further comprises a flexible PCB 170, on which two magnetic sensors 172, 174 are mounted. The flexible PCB 170 with magnetic sensors 172, 174 thereon is mounted inside the housing 110, closely adjacent to the inner surface of the housing 110. This arrangement places the magnetic sensors 172, 174 near but separated from the scroll roller 132 (magnet 136) by the housing 110 therebetween. As such, as the scroll roller 132 turns, the magnetic field generated by the magnet 136 also rotates, allowing the magnetic sensors 172, 174 to sense a change in the magnetic field, which is associated with the rotation of the scroll roller 132. Therefore, the controller of the electronic device 100 is able to determine the rotation of the scroll roller 132 by analyzing the signals detected by the magnetic sensors 172, 174. In the meantime, this configuration, where the magnetic sensors 172, 174 are in proximity to but separated from the scroll roller 132 (magnet 136) by the housing 110, eliminates the need for physical openings or holes in the housing as found in conventional scroll rollers. This design maintains the integrity of the housing 110 and enhances the waterproof and dustproof performance of the electronic device 100.

[0028] As shown in Fig. 3B, the magnetic sensors 172 and 174 are spaced apart from each other and positioned at an angle α relative to the rotational axis of the scroll roller 132. This arrangement enables the magnetic sensors 172 and 174 to receive distinct magnetic field change signals from the magnet 136 as the scroll roller 132 rotates. By analyzing and cross-validating the distinct signals received by sensors 172 and 174, the controller of the electronic device 100 is able to more accurately confirm rotational movements of the scroll roller 132. As such, the arrangement is beneficial in preventing false detections, allowing for a more accurate and precise determination of the rotation of the scroll roller 132, such as the rotation direction and rotation rate of the scroll roller 132. Additionally, as shown, the scroll assembly 130 has a simple and compact structure. Therefore, it offers the advantage of being cost-effective and  suitable for use in a compact electronic device.

[0029] In the embodiment shown, the magnet 136 is oriented with its poles perpendicular to the rotational axis of the scroll roller 132. Both the magnet 136 and the magnetic sensors 172, 174 are situated in a same plane perpendicular to this rotational axis, and the magnetic sensors 172, 174 are substantially equidistant from the rotational axis of the scroll roller 132. This disclosure is not limited to this configuration. In one or more other embodiments, the magnet 136 and magnetic sensors 172, 174 may be positioned or oriented differently, as long as the magnetic sensors 172, 174 can detect the change in the magnetic field from the magnet 136 as the scroll roller 132 rotates.

[0030] In one or more embodiments of the present disclosure, the scroll assembly 130 comprises two spaced apart magnetic sensors 172, 174 for detecting the change in the magnetic field from the magnet 136. In one or more embodiments, the magnetic sensors 172 and 174 are spaced from the magnet 136 by a distance D1 of 3-15mm, 3-10mm, 4-6mm, or about 5mm. In one or more embodiments, the magnetic sensors 172 and 174 are positioned at an angle α that is in a range of 30 to 150 degrees, 60 to 120 degrees, or approximately 90 degrees relative to the rotational axis of the scroll roller 132. In one or more other embodiments, the scroll assembly 130 may comprises other number of magnetic sensors, such as one magnetic sensor or three spaced apart magnetic sensors, for detecting the change in the magnetic field from the magnet 136. In one or more embodiments, the magnetic sensors 172 , 174 may be Hall sensors. In some other embodiments, the magnetic sensors 172, 174 may be any suitable magnetic sensors as long as they can sense the changes in magnetic field of the magnet 136.

[0031] Fig. 3C is a sectional view taken along line 3C-3C of Fig. 3A. As shown, the scroll roller 132 comprises a scroll roller body 134 in a shape of a substantially hollow cylinder, and a magnet 136 located within the hollow cylinder of the scroll roller body 134. The scroll roller body 134 comprises an outer layer 134a made of  elastomeric material and a stop portion 134b integrally formed with the roller body 134 and extending from the roller body 134 into the hollow interior of the hollow cylinder.

[0032] The scroll roller 132 further comprises two end pieces 142, 142’, each mounted to one end of the scroll roller body 134. Each of the end pieces 142, 142’ has a stem portion 144, 144’ extending into the hollow interior of the hollow cylinder of the roller body 134. The stem portion 144, 144’ of one end piece 142, 142’ presses against the stop portion 134b while the stem portion 144, 144’ of the other end piece 142, 142’ presses the magnet 136 against the stop portion 134b. This ensures a secure and stable assembly of the end pieces 142, 142’, roller body 134, and magnet 136.

[0033] The scroll roller 132 further comprises two rotation shafts 152, 152', each of which is either mounted to or integrally formed with one of the two end pieces 142, 142' of the scroll roller 132. The scroll assembly 130 further comprises a base cover 160. The two rotation shafts 152, 152' are mated in corresponding apertures in the base cover 160, allowing the scroll roller 132 to be rotatably connected to the base cover 160. This arrangement facilitates the combined assembly of scroll assembly 130 and base cover 160 to be readily installed onto the housing 110 of the electronic device 100.

[0034] The scroll roller 132 further comprises elastic layers 154, 154' that sheath the radial exterior of the rotation shafts 152, 152' and are securely attached thereto. In certain embodiments, these elastic layers 154, 154' are formed of rubber. The incorporation of the elastic layers 154, 154' enhances the sealing properties and reduces vibrational noise. This reduction in vibrational noise is particularly beneficial for embodiments of the electronic device 100 functioning as portable speakers, where such noise can detrimentally affect sound quality. The elastic layers 154, 154' thus contribute to the overall acoustic performance of the electronic device 100 by mitigating unwanted vibrations and noise.

[0035] The scroll assembly 130 further comprises a tactile feedback assist assembly  180 comprises a base 182, a sealing ring 184, and a spring clip 186, the details of which will be described in reference to Fig. 5.

[0036] Fig. 3C illustrates a specific structure of the scroll assembly 130 according to one or more embodiments of the present disclosure. In one or more other embodiments, the scroll assembly 130 may have any suitable configuration to serve its intended purposes. For instance, more than one axially spaced apart magnet may be situated within the hollow cylinder of the scroll roller body 134, each magnet being associated with one or more magnetic sensors for detecting the magnetic field change. In yet other embodiments, the scroll assembly 130 may omit the base cover 160, allowing for direct fixation of its rotation shafts to the housing of the electronic device. Furthermore, in some embodiments, the tactile feedback assist assembly may have a different structure or even be omitted.

[0037] Fig. 4 illustrates a side view of the scroll assembly 130 connected to the housing 110 of the electronic device. As shown, the base cover 160 comprises a protective protrusion 162 at each end of the scroll roller 132. These protective protrusions 162 rise above the peak of the scroll roller 132 by a vertical distance of D2. In other word, the protective protrusions 162 extend beyond the scroll roller 132 by a distance of D2 in the radial direction of the scroll roller 132. This design shields the scroll roller 132 from incidental contact and potential damage, while ensuring that the user's interaction with the scroll roller 132 remains unhindered, as the protective protrusions 162 are located at the ends, away from the central, interactive area of the scroll roller 132. In one or more embodiments, the vertical distance D2 may be about 1mm, in a range of 1-3mm, or in a range of 1-5mm.

[0038] Fig. 5 illustrates a cross-sectional view taken along the line 5-5 of Fig. 3C. As shown, the rotation shaft 152 of the scroll roller 132 (not shown in Fig. 5) is fitted with a gear 156 that is configured to rotate in unison with the shaft 152. The gear 156 has a radial outer perimeter with multiple protruding teeth 156a and corresponding recessed grooves 156b.

[0039] The tactile feedback assist assembly 180 comprises a base 182, a sealing ring 184, and a spring clip 186. The spring clip 186 comprises a clip base portion attached to the base 182 and two clip portions 188, 188' extending from the clip base portion. The clip portions 188, 188' are positioned on opposite sides of gear 156 and are each provided with a resilient protrusion 190, 190'. The spring clip 186 is positioned and oriented in a way to allow the resilient protrusions 190, 190' to selectively engage with the recessed grooves 156b of the gear 156 from opposite sides.

[0040] As the scroll roller 132 rotates, the resilient protrusions 190, 190' repeatedly enter and engage with the recessed grooves 156b due to their elasticity, while the gear 156, overcoming the resistance of the spring clip 186, continuously disengages the resilient protrusions 190, 190' from the recessed grooves 156b. This arrangement provides users with a clear tactile feedback as they turn the scroll roller 132, thereby enhancing the user experience. Depending on the requirements, gear 156 may have a varying number of teeth to offer different tactile feedback experiences. In the embodiment shown, the gear is provided with eight teeth. In one or more other embodiments, the gear may have more or fewer teeth to provide different tactile feedback.
