[0001] FLYING DISC FUNNEL APPARATUS AND METHODS OF USING SAME

[0002] Priority Claim:

[0003] This application claims priority to United States Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 63 / 624,793, filed January 25, 2024, the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference and relied on.

[0004] Field:

[0005] The present disclosure provides flying disc (e.g., frisbee) equipment, methods of using same, and methods of game play using same.

[0006] Background:

[0007] Games played with flying discs (e.g., Frisbees) are a fast-growing segment of the recreation industry. Yet little to no equipment is commercially available that enables flying disc aficionados to efficiently practice. Practicing flying disc golf putting (i.e., tossing a flying disc into a flying disc golf basket at close range) typically requires the user to retrieve the flying disc after each attempt. The existing technologies provide a negative reinforcement not only for each failed attempt, but also for each successful attempt, rendering the practice session an unpleasant experience even as the user improves. The present disclosure solves the market need by providing flying disc targets capable of, for example, returning the flying disc towards the user after a successful attempt, thus providing a positive reinforcement for each successful practice try.

[0008] Summary:

[0009] The flying disc funnel apparatus disclosed herein redirect the inertia of a flying disc from flight to rolling on edge in a very efficient manner. The flying disc funnel apparatus be used in concert with disc golf discs; specifically disc golf putters, Frisbees, and balls. Flying discs or balls can be tossed, thrown, or dropped, etc., into the flying disc funnel apparatus by a human or a canine and the disc or ball will make its way through the flying disc funnel apparatus with surprising quickness. Flying discs will roll out from the chute opening of the flying disc funnel apparatus at various speeds and directions. A rolling, flying disc will eventually lose momentum and ultimately fall to rest. Where a rolling disc falls over flat is unpredictable. This random nature is what makes the flying disc funnel apparatus so exciting. Single, multiple player, and team play are all possible. Games of skill and chance can be played or invented. For example, the classic basketball game "HORSE" adapts perfectly to the flying disc funnel apparatus. Furthermore, the flying disc funnel apparatus lends itself to wagering and summoning. The flying disc funnel apparatus will be made available in several embodiments. With scale, weather ability, permanence, portability, playing style, and players age all playing key factors in the physical manifestation of the flying disc funnel apparatus.

[0010] The Flying disc funnel apparatus disclosed herein offer several advantages over a traditional disc golf target. The flying disc funnel apparatus provides an efficient and novel means of practicing disc golf putting. Since discs are dispersed randomly onto the playing surface, the user is presented with a unique practice experience each time they use the flying disc funnel apparatus.

[0011] Another advantage of the flying disc funnel apparatus is that it allows the user more shot attempts per practice session. As the user need not walk to the flying disc funnel apparatus in order to retrieve the flying disc after a subsequent made shot. Instead, once the flying disc rolls from the flying disc funnel apparatus and eventually falls to rest on the playing surface, the user is able to approach the flying disc while it is at rest on the ground plane. Further simulating a formal game of disc golf.

[0012] Another advantage to the invention is that it teaches the user the throwing techniques known to those skilled in the art as supination and finger spring.

[0013] Another advantage to the flying disc funnel apparatus is that it can be fitted with a disc golf pole and chain rack, creating a more authentic disc golf experience.

[0014] In some embodiments, the present disclosure provides an apparatus comprising: a funnel body including an upper race configured to receive a flying disc in a horizontal orientation; and at least one chute in operative communication with the funnel body and configured to rotate the flying disc to a vertical orientation and direct the flying disc away from the apparatus in the vertical orientation.

[0015] In other embodiments, the present disclosure provides an apparatus comprising: an upper race for a horizontally-oriented flying disc, the upper race defined by an upper portion of a funnel body; and a lower race configured to rotate the horizontally-oriented flying disc to a vertical orientation, the lower race defined by a lower portion of the funnel body and at least one chute. [0033] FIG. 18 is a flow chart flying disc funnel apparatus illustrating how a flying disc funnel apparatus consistent with the present disclosure processes a flying disc provided by a user. Detailed Description:

[0034] Referring to FIGS. 1-17, flying disc funnel apparatus 10 consistent with the present disclosure generally include a funnel body 12 and at least one chute 16 that act in concert to orient a flying disc 11 that enters the top of the funnel body 12 such that the flying disc 1 1 can roll on its outer rim (“vertically”), for example away from the flying disc funnel apparatus 10.

[0035] The funnel body 12 generally includes a wide opening defined by a rim 18. The rim 18 may include an associated rim trim 20 in some embodiments. When present, the rim trim 20 helps protect a flying disc 11 or ball from incurring damage when impacting the rim 18. Alternatively or in addition, the difficulty of play may be modulated (e.g., increased or decreased as desired) depending on the choice material used to form the rim trim 20. A rim trim 20 comprising a tough, all weather plastic with a slippery surface causes a mis-thrown flying disc 11 to skim off the rim trim 20 and land on the ground plane 48 at increased distances from the flying disc funnel apparatus 10 compared to a softer or higher textured rim trim 20. When present, the rim trim 20 may be permanently affixed to the rim 18 or may be removably attached to the rim 18 (e.g., by one or more fasteners, adhesive, by a snapfitting engagement relationship, or friction).

[0036] The funnel body 12 includes an upper race 22 disposed below the rim 18. The upper race 22 provides a backstop for an appropriately thrown flying disc 11 , similar to a basketball hoop’s backboard, directing an appropriately thrown flying disc 11 into lower portions of the funnel body 12. In addition, the upper race 22’s circular configuration occasionally enables a thrown flying disc 1 1 to swirl or ride along the inside surface of the upper race 22 parallel to the ground plane 48 several times before falling into the lower portions of the funnel body 12. Further, the upper race 22 reduces the chance that an appropriately thrown flying disc 1 1 or ball bounces out of the flying disc funnel apparatus 10 and onto the ground plane 48. The upper race 22 includes a curved profile configured to direct a flying disc 11 entering the funnel body 12 through the rim 18 downwards toward the chute(s) 16. Viewed in cross section (e.g., FIGS. 6-7), the curved profile of the upper race 22 appears convex from outside the funnel body 12. In some embodiments, the upper race 22 includes a brachistochrone curved profile.

[0037] The funnel body 12 may include one or more funnel cheeks 24. When present, the funnel cheeks 24 orient the flying disc 1 1 parallel to the chutes 16 and into its eventual vertical rolling orientation. In some embodiments, the funnel cheeks 24 include a curved profile that, when viewed in cross section (e.g., FIG. 7), appears concave from outside the funnel body 12. In some embodiments, the curved profile includes a brachistochrone curve. As shown specifically in FIG. 2, the funnel cheeks 24 may in some embodiments transition downward to become the outer chute cheeks 26 of the chutes 16, for example in an embodiment that includes two chutes 16. Similarly, the embodiment specifically illustrates in FIGS. 14 and 17 include funnel cheeks 24 that transition downward to become the outer chute cheeks 26 of the flying disc funnel apparatus 10’s single chute 16.

[0038] The funnel body 12 may further include a break wall 32 configured to provide a fulcrum by which the flying disc 11 is decisively reoriented from a generally horizontal to a generally vertical orientation before the flying disc 11 enters the lower race 44. When present, the break wall 32 is disposed centrally within the funnel body 12 to divide the lower funnel body 12 into two or more portions. Each divided portion of the funnel body 12 created by the break wall 32 may correspond to a single chute 16. For example, the embodiment shown specifically in FIG. 5 includes a break wall 32 that divides the lower funnel body 12 into two symmetrical portions, each portion associated with a single chute 16.

[0039] The break wall 32 may include or be associated with a break wall nose trim 36 configured to limit damage to the flying disc 1 1 is snapped, glued, mechanically fastened, etc., to a break wall nose 34. The break wall nose trim 36 is designed with a radial edge and soft rubber, thus limiting the impact between the break wall nose 34 and the flying disc 11 . The choice material for the break wall trim 36 being a rubber of a gummy, rugged, and all- weather nature. The friction between the gummy rubber of the break wall trim 36 and the smooth and semi firm plastic of the flying disc 1 1 allows for rapid deceleration of the flying disc 11 .

[0040] The break wall 32 may optionally include an accessory pocket 38 configured to accept and secure (e.g., temporarily secure) an accessory. In some embodiments, the accessory pocket 38 is disposed at the top center of a break wall 32. When present, the accessory pocket 38 may be disposed centrally within the funnel body 12 (e.g., at a point along a centrally-located vertical axis 12v of the funnel body 12). The accessory pocket 38 may be configured, for example, a pole 62 and / or a chain rack 14. An accessory plug 40 may be affixed within (e.g., temporarily placed within) the accessory pocket 38 when an accessory is not secured within the accessory pocket 38. In some embodiments, the break wall 32 is associated with, or transitions into, the inner chute cheek(s) 28 of the chute(s) 16, as shown in FIG. 9.

[0041] Opposite the rim 18, the funnel body 12 is in operative communication with one or more chutes 16 that enable a flying disc 1 1 to roll away from the flying disc funnel apparatus 10 on the flying disc 11 ’s edge. The flying disc funnel apparatus 10 may include a single chute 16 or more than one chute 16. For example and without limitation, the flying disc funnel apparatus 10 may include one chute 16, two chutes 16, three chutes 16, four chutes 16, five chutes 16, six, or more than six chutes 16. Each chute 16 defines a curved pathway enabling the flying disc 1 1 to move from the funnel body 12 to the ground plane 48 such that the flying disc 1 1 exits the chute 16 rolling on its outer rim (“vertically”).

[0042] Each chute 16 includes inner dimensions sufficient to enable a flying disc 11 or ball that passes from the funnel body 12 to roll through the chute 16 and exit the flying disc funnel apparatus 10. For example, a flying disc funnel apparatus 10 intended to be used with flying discs 1 1 may include one or more chutes 16, each having an inner width and an inner height sufficient to enable the flying disc 11 to roll through the entire length of the chute 16 on the flying disc 11 ’s edge.

[0043] Each chute 16 comprises a chute top 42, an inner chute cheek 28, and an outer chute cheek 26 disposed opposite the inner chute cheek 28. The inner chute cheek 28 and the outer chute cheek 26 are separated by a width that should be greater than about 2 times the width of a flying disc 11 , for example to prevent the chute 16 from jamming when two flying discs enter the chute top 42 simultaneously or near simultaneously. The chute top 42, the inner chute cheek 28, and the outer chute cheek 26 terminate at a chute opening 50, where the flying disc 11 exits the flying disc funnel apparatus 10. The inner chute cheeks 28 and the outer chute cheeks 26 extend from the funnel body 12 to the base plate 52.

[0044] The lower portion of the funnel body 12 and the chute(s) 16 define a lower race 44. The lower race 44 is configured to transition the flying disc 1 1 ’s downward motion from within the funnel body 12 to a horizontal motion at the chute opening 50. The profile of the lower race 44 in some embodiments is brachistochrone. The bed or rolling surface of the lower race 44 may in some embodiments be configured flat. In other embodiments, the bed or rolling surface of the lower race 44 includes a plurality of grooves to guide the flying disc 11 or ball 15. The transition 46 of the lower race 44 to the ground plane 48 in some embodiments is a removable part that can be adjusted and shaped to enable a smooth transition from the lower race 44 to the ground plane 48 (e.g., to prevent the flying disc 11 from bouncing as it contacts the ground plane 48). This prevents the chutes 16 from jamming when two flying discs 11 enter the chutes 16 simultaneously. Additionally, a profile matching the clearance of the ball 15 or other objects can be designed into the chutes 16.

[0045] The flying disc funnel apparatus 10 may include a base plate 52 configured to enable the flying disc funnel apparatus 10 to be mounted to a substrate. The base plate 52 may assume various shapes and sizes depending on the substrate to which the apparatus 10 must be affixed. The base plate 52 may include mounting holes 56, for example around its perimeter. In some embodiments, the base plate 52 includes caster recesses 66 configured to receive casters 68 and / or other accessories. In some embodiments, the base plate 52 includes a pole mounting hole 60 and a pole pocket 58 at its center. The pole pocket 58 is a counter bore located in the top center of the base plate 52. The pole pocket 58 is used with a hardware 64 to fit a pole 62 to the flying disc funnel apparatus 10 as shown in FIG. 1 1.

[0046] Referring now to FIGS. 16-17, the apparatus 10 may include a carrying box 76 disposed about the chute(s) 16 and / or disposed about at least a portion of the funnel body 12. The carrying box 76 may include a disc storage compartment 78. In some embodiments, the carrying box 76 includes one or more handles 80.

[0047] The flying disc funnel apparatus 10 can be formed from any suitable material. The flying disc funnel apparatus 10 may include a finish 70 comprising paint, powder coat, electroplate, stain, etc. A logo 72 can be placed, embossed, engraved, printed, or painted on the flying disc funnel apparatus 10. In some embodiments, exposed fasteners and edges may be eased to reduce or prevent damage to the flying disc 11 .

[0048] Operation:

[0049] To begin, the user must setup the flying disc funnel apparatus 10. Setup is dependent on the given embodiment. In all embodiments, the optimum surface of the ground plane 48 is level, smooth and flat.

[0050] FIGS. 16 and 17 shows a portable or boxed version of the flying disc funnel apparatus 10. The portable version can be placed on the ground plane 48 by rolling or carrying. Rolling is made possible with the fitment the casters 68 into the caster recesses 66. Carrying is made possible with the use of the handles 80.

[0051] The flying disc funnel apparatus 10 is fastened to the ground plane 48 for stability using mounting hardware 54 and mounting holes 56.

[0052] An accessory, such as a pole 62 and chain rack 14, may be inserted into the accessory pocket 38.

[0053] Once the apparatus 10 is affixed and accessorized, it is ready for play.

[0054] FIG. 18 is a flowchart showing how the flying disc funnel apparatus 10 processes 1000 a flying disc 11 tossed by a user (step 1010). If the flying disc 1 1 lands within the perimeter of the rim 18 (step 1020), or if the flying disc 11 lands within the perimeter of the rim 18 after swirling around the upper race 22 (step 1030), the flying disc 1 1 passes from the upper race 22 to the lower race 44 via the funnel body 12 and one chute 16 before rolling out of the chute opening 50 and along the ground plane 48 (step 1060). The user then picks up the flying disc 11 from the ground plane 48 (step 1070) and may repeat the process from step 1010.

[0055] If the flying disc 1 1 tossed by the user (step 1010) instead skims off the rim 18 onto the ground plane 48 (step 1040), or does not contact the flying disc funnel apparatus 10 at all (step 1050), the user may pick up the flying disc 11 from the ground plane 48 and may try to toss the flying disc 1 1 into the funnel body 12 again (step 1010).
