Description

A polyamide composition for inner liner of high-pressure gaseous hydrogen tankTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The present invention relates to a polyamide composition, and a high-pressure gaseous hydrogen tank with inner liner produced from the same.BACKGROUND

[0002] Polyamide is a polymer material which may be used as the polymer liner material for Type IV hydrogen tank, which can meet the requirements of GB / T 42612-2023. Components of a polyamide composition generally have significant influence on the performance of the polymer inner liner formed from it and the preparation method to form the polymer inner liner. The polyamide composition needs to impart the obtained polymer inner liner with high gaseous hydrogen barrier performance, toughness at both low and room temperature, as well as heat resistance for wide operation and application range, such as -50 to 85 ℃. The polyamide composition also needs to make the polymer inner liner be able to fabricate by economic, simple and safe approaches.

[0003] At present, polymer inner liner can be fabricated by extrusion, injection molding, rotational molding, blow molding, or some combination thereof. Among those approaches, rotational molding, or rotomolding, is a commonly used technology for large vessel production, in which a final product is formed in a mold by simultaneously rotating and raising the temperature to a point much higher than the melting temperature of the base resin. This allows the material to be shaped into desired form of the final product. The fundamental advantages of rotational molding are the elimination of connections and welds on the liner and no internal tensions in the construction, regulated wall thickness, and simple and easy formation of additional elements (threaded elements, bosses, etc. ) . For economic and safety reasons, rotational molding is particularly suitable for producing inner liner of high-pressure gaseous hydrogen tank.

[0004] US8053523B2 discloses a hydrogen tank liner obtained by injection molding. It further discloses using a polyamide resin composition which comprises 85-40 wt%of PA6, 5-30 wt%of copolyamide PA6 / 66 and 10-30 wt%of acid-modified ethylene / α-olefin-based copolymer POE (Polyolefin elastomer) . However, since PA6 and POE cannot withstand harsh conditions of keeping the material in molten state for dozens of minutes and will deteriorate seriously, the polyamide resin composition cannot be used for rotational molding.

[0005] JP4588078B2 discloses a hydrogen tank liner material comprising a polyamide resin composition comprising (A) polyamide 6, (B) polyamide 6 / 66, and (C) maleic anhydride-modified EBR, wherein (A) polyamide 6 is 85 to 40 wt%, (B) polyamide 6 / 66 is 5 to 30 wt%, and (C) maleic anhydride-modified EBR is 10 to 30 wt%based on the entire polyamide resin composition. It further discloses that the hydrogen tank liner is formed by forming two or more individual bodies constituting the desired article by single-layer injection molding and then joining them together by laser welding. The process is relatively complex, and the welding line may be a weak point. In addition, PA6 and EBR cannot withstand harsh conditions for rotational molding, which requires retaining the material in molten state for dozens of minutes, and will deteriorate seriously.

[0006] Therefore, it is still required to provide a new polyamide composition, which has good gaseous hydrogen barrier performance, toughness at both low and room temperature and heat resistance for wide operation and application temperature range, and can withstand the harsh processing conditions required by rotational molding without material performance deterioration.

[0007] SUMMARY OF THE PRESENT INVENTION

[0091] According to the invention, the at least one copolyamide is produced by polymerization of the components b1) and b2) . The polymerization of the components b1) and b2) is known to those skilled in the art and is typically a condensation reaction. This causes amide bonds to form between the individual components.

[0092] The polymerization of the components b1) and b2) may take place in the presence of a catalyst. Suitable catalysts include all catalysts known to those skilled in the art which catalyze the polymerization of the components b1) and b2) . Preferred catalysts are phosphorus compounds, for example sodium hypophosphite, phosphorous acid, triphenylphosphine or triphenyl phosphite.

[0093] The polymerization of the components b1) and b2) forms the at least one copolyamide which therefore comprises units derived from the component b1) and units derived from the component b2) . Units derived from the component b2) comprise units derived from the components b21) and b22) .

[0094] The polymerization of the components b1) and b2) forms the copolyamide as a copolymer. The copolymer may be a random copolymer or a block copolymer.

[0095] Formed in a block copolymer are blocks of units derived from the component b2) and the component b1) . These appear in alternating sequence. In a random copolymer units derived from the component b1) alternate randomly with units derived from the component b2) . For example, two units derived from the component b2) may be followed by one unit derived from the component b1) which is followed in turn by a unit derived from the component b2) and then by a unit comprising three units derived from the component b1) .

[0096] It is preferable when the at least one copolyamide is a random copolymer.

[0097] Production of the at least one copolyamide preferably comprises steps of:

[0098] I) polymerizing the components b1) and b2) to obtain at least a first copolyamide,

[0099] II) pelletizing the at least one first copolyamide obtained in step I) to obtain at least one pelletized copolyamide,

[0100] III) extracting the at least one pelletized copolyamide obtained in step II) with water to obtain at least one extracted copolyamide,

[0101] IV) drying the at least one extracted copolyamide obtained in step III) at an elevated temperature to obtain the at least one copolyamide.

[0102] The polymerization in step I) may be carried out in any reactor known to those skilled in the art. Preference is given to stirred tank reactors. It is also possible to use auxiliaries known to those skilled in the art, for example defoamers such as polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) , to improve reaction management.

[0103] In step II) the at least one first copolyamide obtained in step I) may be pelletized by any methods known to those skilled in the art, for example by strand pelletization or underwater pelletization.

[0104] The extraction in step III) may be affected by any methods known to those skilled in the art. During the extraction in step III) byproducts typically formed during the polymerization of the components b1) and b2) in step I) are extracted from the at least one pelletized copolyamide.

[0105] In step IV) the at least one extracted copolyamide obtained in step III) is dried. Processes for drying are known to those skilled in the art. According to the invention the at least one extracted copolyamide is dried at an elevated temperature, which is preferably above the glass transition temperature of the at least one copolyamide and below the melting temperature of the at least one copolyamide.

[0106] The drying in step IV) is typically carried out for a period in the range from 1 to 100 hours, preferably in the range from 2 to 50 hours and especially preferably in the range from 3 to 40 hours.

[0107] It is thought that the drying in step IV) further increases the molecular weight of the at least one copolyamide.

[0108] The at least one copolyamide typically has a glass transition temperature in the range from 10℃ to 60℃, determined according to ISO 11357-2: 2014.

[0109] In the context of the present invention, the glass transition temperature of the at least one copolyamide is based, in accordance with ISO 11357-2: 2014, on the glass transition temperature of the dry copolyamide.

[0110] In the context of the present invention, “dry” is to be understood as meaning that the at least one copolyamide comprises less than 1 %by weight, preferably less than 0.5%by weight and especially preferably less than 0.1 %by weight of water based on the total weight of the at least one copolyamide. “Dry" is more preferably to be understood as meaning that the at least one copolyamide comprises no water and most preferably that the at least one copolyamide comprises no solvent.

[0111] In addition, the at least one copolyamide typically has a melting temperature in the range from 160 to 210℃ determined according to ISO 11357-3: 2014, preferably has a melting point of 190 to 210℃, specifically 195 to 205℃, more specifically 196 to 202℃.

[0112] The at least one copolyamide generally has a relative viscosity of 2.5-4.2, preferably 2.6-3.9 (measured according to ISO 307, 1157, 1628 (0.5%in phenol / orthodichlorbenzene 50: 50) ) .

[0113] Component b1)

[0114] According to the invention the component b1) is at least one lactam.

[0115] In the context of the present invention "at least one lactam" is understood as meaning either precisely one lactam or a mixture of two or more lactams.

[0122] Component b2)

[0123] According to the invention the component b2) is a monomer mixture (M) . The monomer mixture (M) comprises the components b21) , at least one C32-C40-dimer acid, and b22) , at least one C4-C12-diamine.

[0124] In the context of the present invention a monomer mixture (M) is to be understood as meaning a mixture of two or more monomers, wherein at least components b21) and b22) are present in the monomer mixture (M) .

[0125] In the context of the present invention the terms "component b21) " and "at least one C32-C40-dimer acid" are used synonymously and therefore have the same meaning. The terms "component b22) " and "at least one C4-C12-diamine" are likewise used synonymously in the context of the present invention and therefore have the same meaning.

[0126] The monomer mixture (M) comprises, for example, in the range from 45 to 55 mol%of the component b21) and in the range from 45 to 55 mol%of the component b22) in each case based on the sum of the mole of the components b21) and b22) , preferably based on the total amount of substance of the monomer mixture (M) .

[0129] The mole percentages of the components b21) and b22) present in the component b2) typically sum to 100 mol%.

[0130] The components b21) and b22) of the component b2) can react with one another to obtain amides. This reaction is known per se to those skilled in the art. The component b2) may therefore comprise components b21) and b22) in fully reacted form, in partially reacted form or in unreacted form. It is preferable when the component b2) comprises the components b21) and b22) in unreacted form. In the context of the present invention "in unreacted form” is thus to be understood as meaning that the component b21) is present as the at least one C32-C40-dimer acid and the component b22) is present as the at least one C4-C12-diamine.

[0131] If the components b21) and b22) have at least partly reacted the components b21) and b22) are thus at least partially in amide form.

[0132] Component b21)

[0133] According to the invention the component b21) is at least one C32-C40-dimer acid.

[0134] In the context of the present invention "at least one C32-C40-dimer acid" is to be understood as meaning either precisely one C32-C40-dimer acid or a mixture of two or more C32-C40-dimer acids.

[0135] Dimer acids are also referred to as dimer fatty acids. C32-C40-dimer acids are known per se to those skilled in the art and are typically produced by dimerization of unsaturated fatty acids.

[0136] This dimerization may be catalyzed by argillaceous earth for example.

[0137] Suitable unsaturated fatty acids for producing the at least one C32-C40-dimer acid are known to those skilled in the art and are for example unsaturated C16-fatty acids, unsaturated C18-fatty acids and unsaturated C20-fatty acids.

[0162] Component D

[0163] In the present invention, the at least one additive used for polyamide composition is commonly known by those skilled in the art. Preferable examples are at least one selected from the group comprising antioxidant, lubricant, nucleation agent, fluorescent brightener, or any combination thereof.

[0164] The above mentioned additive can be used alone or in any combination in any desired mixing ratio.

[0165] If additives are present, the total amount of all additives, based on the total weight of the polyamide composition, is preferably from 0.2 to 4.0 wt%, preferably 0.5 to 3.0 wt%, more preferably 0.6 to 2.5 wt%.

[0166] As antioxidants, the customary and known antioxidants for polyamide are optionally used for producing the polyamide compositions of the present invention, examples being Irganox 1098 and Hostanox P-EPQ PWD, both from BASF. Typically, the amount of antioxidants is preferably from 0.1 to 3.0 %by weight, more preferably from 0.2 to 2.5%by weight, based on the total weight of the polyamide compositions.

[0167] As lubricants, the customary and known lubricants for polyamide production are optionally used for producing the polyamide compositions of the present invention, examples being calcium-montanate from Clariant. Typically, the amount of lubricants is preferably from 0.05 to 3.0 %by weight, more preferably from 0.1 to 2.0%by weight, based on the total weight of the polyamide compositions.

[0168] As fluorescent brighteners, the customary and known fluorescent brighteners for polyamide are optionally used for producing the polyamide compositions of the present invention, examples being 1, 4-Bis (2-benzoxazolyl) naphthalene, KCB C.I 367, from Sinopharm. Typically, the amount of fluorescent brighteners is preferably from 0.02 to 2.0 %by weight, more preferably from 0.05 to 1.0%by weight, based on the total weight of the polyamide compositions.

[0170] Not limited to any theory, it has been found that the simultaneous use of component C and component B can improve the toughness of the polyamide composition, especially at low temperature. In addition, component B can withstand the high temperature and thus the rotational molding, and component A, which has lower amide bond content in the polymer chain, is less susceptible to thermal degradation. It has also been found that the simultaneous use of component A and component B can cause lower crystallinity, which is beneficial toughness at both room and low temperature. Thus, owing to the combination of those components, the polyamide composition is particularly suitable for producing inner liner of high-pressure gaseous hydrogen tank by rotational molding.

[0171] Advantageously, the inventive polyamide composition has the following properties:

[0177] HDT value of no less than 100 ℃, measured according to standard ISO 75.

[0178] The present invention also provides a method for preparing the polyamide composition according to the present invention, comprising the following steps:

[0179] a) compounding components A, B, C and optionally D to obtain a mixture,

[0180] b) melting the mixture, preferably in a extruder, to form a melt and extruding the melt,

[0181] c) pelletizing the extruded melt to obtain the polyamide composition in a pellet form.

[0182] In the present invention, the compounding can be done by an extruder, such as a Berstorff ZE25Ax twin-screw extruder. During compounding, all the components A, B and optionally D except component C the plasticizer are mixed and fed into the throat zone of the extruder, while the plasticizer is fed at downstream. The plasticizer is preferably in liquid form and fed by using a side liquid feeder. In another method for compounding, the plasticizer is pre-compounded with components A and  / or B to form polyamide / plasticizer masterbatch, which is in polymer pellet form and can be fed with the remaining components into throat zone of the extruder.

[0183] The compounded raw materials are melt-extruded, pelletized, thus producing a polyamide composition in pellet form. The obtained pellets can be further ground so as to produce desired parts. Grinding of polyamide composition pellets to powder can be done by using a specialized plastics grinding machine, such as that purchased from PALLMANN GmbH, or by companies specialized in providing powder grinding services. In the grinding process, liquid nitrogen may be used to lower the temperature. At least 70 wt%of the obtained powder is within the particle size of 100~500 μm. The particle size in the present invention is determined by using a nanolaser particle size analyzer, such as that purchased from Malvern Instruments Ltd., UK. The moisture content of the powder is kept below 0.15 wt%, determined by thermogravimetric analysis.

[0184] In the present invention, the optimized viscosity number of the melted polyamide composition ranges from 70 to 90 ml / g, according to ISO 307.

[0185] The polyamide composition in pellet form or powder form can be used for different liner fabrication approachs, such as extrusion, blow molding, injection molding or rotational molding, specifically rotational molding, due to its advantage in toughness. The extrusion, blow molding, injection molding or rotational molding per se are commonly known by those skilled in the art. For example, injection molding can be performed by injecting molten material into a mold to fabricate parts or specimens of different shapes by using injection molding machine, such as Krauss Maffei KX130. The rotational molding can be performed by using standard rotational molding machines available from Rising Sun Rotomolding Technology Co. LTD. The rotational molding process usually comprises the following steps: feeding the powder to a hollow mold and closing the mold, heating the mold while rotating the mold slowly around two axis for minutes to hours, then cooling the mold with air and a fine mist of water, finally taking out the molded part.

[0186] The present invention also provides a high-pressure gaseous hydrogen tank with an inner liner obtained from the polyamide composition preferably by rotational molding.Examples

[0204] The material performances of each sample were tested according to the following standards.

[0205] Testing standards:

[0206] Polyamide Composition Processing:

[0207] The compounding was done by a Berstorff ZE25Ax twin-screw extruder. All the raw materials except the plasticizer were mixed and fed into the throat, while the plasticizer in liquid form was fed at downstream using a side liquid feeder. The raw materials were melt-extruded, pelletized, thus obtaining a thermoplastic polyamide composition in pellet form. The setting temperature of the extruder from Zone 1 to Zone 10 was as follows: 50 ℃ -180 ℃ -210 ℃ -220 ℃ -220 ℃ -225 ℃ -225 ℃ -230 ℃ -230 ℃ -235 ℃ -235 ℃.

[0208] The pellets were ground into powder by using a specialized plastics grinding machine from PALLMANN GmbH. In the grinding process, liquid nitrogen was used to lower the temperature. 70 wt%of the obtained powder had a particle size within the range of 100~500 μm. The moisture content of the powder was 0.15 wt%.

[0209] Sample preparation by injection molding:

[0210] Injection molding was used for sample preparation to perform material tests. In an injection molding machine Krauss Maffei KX130, under temperature of 240℃, the powder material was molten and then the molten material was injected into a mold to fabricate samples. For sample preparation, the components of each polyamide composition powder for Inventive Examples 1 to 7 and Comparative Examples 1 to 5 were used as shown in table 1. The performance data of each sample are also shown in table 1.

[0211] Table 1. Data of Inventive Examples 1 to 7 and Comparative Examples 1 to 5 *Tff 0.45 means that HDT test is conducted under specified load of 0.45 MPa.

[0212] Continued Table 1

[0213] From the above results, it can be seen that compared with CEx. 4 (without PA6 / 6.36) , IEx. 2 (with PA6 / 6.36) exhibites 8.8%increase in tensile strength, 19.9%increase in tensile elongation at break and 70%increase in Charpy notched impact strength. It also can be seen that compared with CEx. 4 and CEx. 5, all of IEx. 1 to IEx. 7 show higher tensile strength, significantly better tensile elongation at break and Charpy notched impact strength, imlying that the inventive polyamide compositions have better toughness at room temperature.

[0214] Permeation property, toughness property and heat resistance property were tested for the specimens of CEx. 4 and IEx. 2, and the data are given in the following Table 2.

[0215] Table 2. Property comparison between CEx. 4 and IEx. 2

[0216] From the above results, it can be seen that compared with CEx. 4, IEx. 2 has about 26%lower enthalpy of fusion, indicating the much lower crystallinity. It is assumed to be attributed to the following two reasons: 1) PA6 / 6.36 has much lower crystallinity than PA1012; 2) the compatible effect between PA6 / 6.36 and PA1012 lead to limited crystallization behavior of PA1012. In addition, the crystallization temperature of IEx. 2 is 5 K lower than CEx. 4, indicating large crystals are less formed in the former than in the latter. The better Charpy notched impact strength and tensile elongation at break of IEx. 2 also imply the higher toughness at both room and low temperature, which is brought about by the use of PA6 / 6.36. Besides, it can also be seen that the injection molding shrinkage of IEx. 2 is slightly lower than CEx. 4, which can result in better dimensional stability during processing. For the target application of hydrogen tank liner, CEx. 4 and IEx. 2 exhibit similar H2 gas permeability coefficient, measured at pressure of 0.1 MPa and temperature of 55 ℃, which satisfies the corresponding requirement of no higher than 4.5×10-15 mol·m /  (m2·s·Pa) .

[0217] In addition, it can be seen from tables 1 and 2 that IEx. 2 show an HDT value of no less than 100 ℃ and high Tensile Elongation at break at -50 ℃, implying that the inventive compositions have excellent heat resistance for wide operation range.

[0218] Sample preparation by rotational molding to perform material tests:

[0219] All the above samples of Inventive Examples 1 to 7 and Comparative Examples 1 to 5 were used for rotational molding trials. The rotational molding was performed using standard rotational molding machines from Rising Sun Rotomolding Technology Co. LTD. The rotational molding process proceeded as follows: feeding the powder to the hollow mold and closing the mold, heating the mold while rotating the mold slowly around two axis for 0.5 h, then cooling the mold with air and a fine mist of water, finally taking out the molded part. The specimens for testing were directly cut from the rotational molded parts.

[0220] CEx. 3-5 and IEx 1-7 have good processibility and thermal stability for rotational molding, and can withstand oven temperature between 240 ℃ and 320 ℃. In contrast, CEx. 1 and CEx. 2 are not successful for rotational molding, with a large number of defects / bubbles when be processed by relatively lower temperature molding; however, the relatively higher temperature molding results in obviously yellow color and brittleness. SEM is used to show the microstructure of the cryo-fractured surface of the rotational molded part prepared from the polyamide composition of IEx. 2, as shown in Figures 1 and 2. Figures 1 and 2 show very intact microstructure, with no bubbles / pinholes or other types of defects observed.

[0221] Tensile properties were tested for the specimens of CEx. 4 and IEx. 2 taken from the rotational molded parts, and the data are given in the following Table 3.

[0222] Table 3. Tensile property comparison between CEx. 4 and IEx. 2

[0223] From the above results, it can be seen that compared with CEx. 4, IEx. 2 still shows obvious advantage in tensile elongation at break and comparable tensile strength, implying better toughness at both room and low temperature.
