Description

Base station, terminal, network node and communication method

[0001] The present invention relates to a base station, a terminal, a network node, and a communication method in a communication system.

[0002] 3GPP (registered trademark) (3rd Generation Partnership Project) is currently studying a wireless communication system called 5G or NR (New Radio) (hereinafter, the wireless communication system will be referred to as "5G" or "NR") in order to achieve a larger system capacity, a higher data transmission speed, and a lower latency in wireless sections. Various wireless technologies are being studied for 5G to meet the requirements of achieving a throughput of 10 Gbps or more while keeping latency in wireless sections to 1 ms or less.

[0003] In NR, a network architecture including 5GC (5G Core Network) corresponding to EPC (Evolved Packet Core), which is the core network in the network architecture of LTE (Long Term Evolution), and NG-RAN (Next Generation - Radio Access Network) corresponding to E-UTRAN (Evolved Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network), which is the RAN (Radio Access Network) in the network architecture of LTE, is being considered (for example, Non-Patent Document 1 and Non-Patent Document 2).

[0004] 3GPP TS 23.501 V18.4.0 (2023-12)3GPP TS 23.502 V18.4.0 (2023-12)3GPP TR 38.848 V18.0.0 (2023-09)3GPP TS 23.288 V18.4.0 (2023-12)

[0005] Ambient Internet of Things (AIoT) devices are being considered (see Non-Patent Document 3). AIoT aims to achieve a significantly higher number of connections, higher device density, lower complexity, and lower power consumption than conventional LTE-MTC (Long Term Evolution - Machine Type Communication) or NB-IoT (Narrowband IoT).

[0006] There are types of AIOT devices that do not have a power source. In the existing connection management procedure, the terminal actively sends a service request message to an Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF). However, since the AIOT device does not have a power source, it cannot actively send a message. Therefore, the AIOT device cannot perform the existing connection management procedure.

[0007] The present invention has been made in consideration of the above points, and aims to execute a connection management procedure for AIoT (Ambient Internet of Things) devices.

[0008] According to the disclosed technology, a base station is provided which has a transmitting unit that transmits unmodulated waves to a terminal when it is expected to send a message to the terminal or receive a message from the terminal, a receiving unit that receives a connection acceptance request from the terminal, and a control unit that determines whether to accept the connection for the terminal based on a network congestion state, and when the control unit determines that the connection for the terminal is accepted, the transmitting unit transmits a connection acceptance message to the terminal, the receiving unit receives data from the terminal, and the transmitting unit transmits the data to a network node.

[0009] According to the disclosed technology, connection management procedures for AIoT (Ambient Internet of Things) devices can be executed.

[0011] Hereinafter, an embodiment of the present invention will be described with reference to the drawings. Note that the embodiment described below is an example, and the embodiment to which the present invention is applied is not limited to the following embodiment.

[0012] In the operation of the wireless communication system according to the embodiment of the present invention, existing technology is used as appropriate. However, the existing technology is, for example, the existing LTE, but is not limited to the existing LTE. Furthermore, the term "LTE" used in this specification has a broad meaning including LTE-Advanced, and systems subsequent to LTE-Advanced (e.g., NR), or wireless LAN (Local Area Network), unless otherwise specified.

[0013] Furthermore, in the embodiments of the present invention, "configuring" radio parameters and the like may mean that predetermined values are pre-configured, or that radio parameters notified from the network node 30 or the terminal 20 are set.

[0014] Fig. 1 is a diagram illustrating an example of a communication system. As shown in Fig. 1, the communication system is composed of a UE, which is a terminal 20, and multiple network nodes 30. Hereinafter, it is assumed that one network node 30 corresponds to each function, but multiple functions may be realized by one network node 30, or multiple network nodes 30 may realize one function. Furthermore, the "connection" described below may be a logical connection or a physical connection.

[0015] The RAN (Radio Access Network) is a network node 30 having a radio access function, which may include a base station 10, and is connected to a UE, an AMF (Access and Mobility Management Function), and a UPF (User plane function). The AMF is a network node 30 having functions such as terminating the RAN interface, terminating the NAS (Non-Access Stratum), registration management, connection management, reachability management, and mobility management. The UPF is a network node 30 having functions such as a PDU (Protocol Data Unit) session point to the outside that interconnects with a DN (Data Network), packet routing and forwarding, and user plane QoS (Quality of Service) handling. The UPF and the DN constitute a network slice. In the wireless communication network according to the embodiment of the present invention, multiple network slices may be configured.

[0016] The AMF is connected to the UE, RAN, SMF (Session Management function), NSSF (Network Slice Selection Function), NEF (Network Exposure Function), NRF (Network Repository Function), UDM (Unified Data Management), AUSF (Authentication Server Function), PCF (Policy Control Function), and AF (Application Function). The AMF, SMF, NSSF, NEF, NRF, UDM, AUSF, PCF, and AF are network nodes 30 that are mutually connected via interfaces based on their respective services, Namf, Nsmf, Nnssf, Nnef, Nnrf, Nudm, Nausf, Npcf, and Naf.

[0017] The SMF is a network node 30 having functions such as session management, UE IP (Internet Protocol) address allocation and management, DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) function, ARP (Address Resolution Protocol) proxy, and roaming function. The NEF is a network node 30 having a function of notifying other NFs (Network Functions) of capabilities and events. The NSSF is a network node 30 having functions such as selecting a network slice to which a UE connects, determining an allowed NSSAI (Network Slice Selection Assistance Information), determining an NSSAI to be set, and determining an AMF set to which a UE connects. The PCF is a network node 30 having a function of controlling network policies. The AF is a network node 30 having a function of controlling application servers. The NRF is a network node 30 having a function of discovering NF instances that provide services. The UDM is a network node 30 that manages subscriber data and authentication data. The UDM is connected to a UDR (User Data Repository) that stores the data.

[0018] Fig. 2 is a diagram illustrating an example of a communication system in a roaming environment. As shown in Fig. 2, the network is composed of a UE, which is a terminal 20, and multiple network nodes 30. Hereinafter, it is assumed that one network node 30 corresponds to each function, but multiple functions may be realized by one network node 30, or multiple network nodes 30 may realize one function. Furthermore, the "connection" described below may be a logical connection or a physical connection.

[0019] The RAN is a network node 30 having a radio access function, and is connected to the UE, the AMF, and the UPF. The AMF is a network node 30 having functions such as RAN interface termination, NAS termination, registration management, connection management, reachability management, and mobility management. The UPF is a network node 30 having functions such as a PDU session point to the outside that interconnects with the DN, packet routing and forwarding, and user plane QoS handling. The UPF and the DN constitute a network slice. In the wireless communication network according to the embodiment of the present invention, multiple network slices are constructed.

[0020] The AMF is connected to the UE, RAN, SMF, NSSF, NEF, NRF, UDM, AUSF, PCF, AF, and SEPP (Security Edge Protection Proxy). The AMF, SMF, NSSF, NEF, NRF, UDM, AUSF, PCF, and AF are network nodes 30 that are interconnected via respective service-based interfaces, Namf, Nsmf, Nnssf, Nnef, Nnrf, Nudm, Nausf, Npcf, and Naf.

[0021] The SMF is a network node 30 having functions such as session management, UE IP address allocation and management, DHCP function, ARP proxy, and roaming function. The NEF is a network node 30 having a function of notifying other NFs of capabilities and events. The NSSF is a network node 30 having functions such as selecting a network slice to which a UE connects, determining an allowed NSSAI, determining a configured NSSAI, and determining an AMF set to which a UE connects. The PCF is a network node 30 having a function of controlling network policies. The AF is a network node 30 having a function of controlling application servers. The NRF is a network node 30 having a function of discovering NF instances that provide services. The SEPP is a non-transparent proxy that filters control plane messages between PLMNs (Public Land Mobile Networks). The vSEPP shown in FIG. 2 is a SEPP in the visited network, and the hSEPP is a SEPP in the home network.

[0022] As shown in Figure 2, a UE is in a roaming environment connected to a RAN and an AMF in a Visited PLMN (VPLMN). The VPLMN and a Home PLMN (HPLMN) are connected via a vSEPP and an hSEPP. The UE can communicate with a UDM in the HPLMN via the AMF in the VPLMN, for example.

[0023] Here, ambient Internet of Things (AIoT) devices are being considered (see Non-Patent Document 3). AIoT is considering communication systems for three categories of terminals and four types of network configurations. Compared to conventional LTE-MTC (Long Term Evolution - Machine Type Communication) or NB-IoT (Narrowband IoT), AIoT aims for a significantly higher number of connections, terminal density, low complexity, and low power consumption. For example, the network topology consists of terminals and base stations. The base station that transmits radio waves and signals to the terminal may be different from the base station that receives backscattered signals from the terminal.

[0024] There is a category of AIOT devices that do not have a power source. In the existing connection management procedure, especially the service request procedure, the terminal actively sends a service request message to the AMF. However, the AIOT device cannot actively send a message, that is, the AIOT device cannot perform the existing service request procedure. The AIOT device cannot perform the existing network-initiated service request procedure.

[0025] When a signal or data to be transmitted to a network is generated within the IoT device, the IoT device does not have a means for quickly transmitting the signal or data to the network, and when a signal or data to be transmitted to the IoT device is generated within the network, the network does not have a means for quickly transmitting the signal or data to the IoT device.

[0026] Therefore, it is necessary to consider a new procedure for transmitting and receiving signals or data to and from a device that cannot actively send messages, that is, that can only communicate by backscattering.

[0027] Therefore, if the terminal has UL data and there is no access restriction bit in the arbitrary command transmitted by the base station, it uses the following unmodulated wave to transmit a connection grant request to the base station. If the base station grants the grant, the terminal transmits the UL data to the base station. Also, if an arbitrary NF has DL data, it queries the UDM to find an AMF that accommodates the terminal. The NF transmits the DL data to the AMF. The AMF transmits the DL data to a base station in its registration area and requests a call. The base station transmits the DL data to the terminal that responds.

[0028] FIG. 3 is a sequence diagram illustrating an operation example (1) according to an embodiment of the present invention. FIG. 4 is a sequence diagram illustrating an operation example (2) according to an embodiment of the present invention. The UL data transmission procedure will be described using FIGS. 3 and 4. Device 1 is an AIoT device. Base station 1 is a base station 10A classified as AIoT registration area (hereinafter also referred to as "AIoT-RA") #1. Base station 2 is a base station 10B classified as AIoT-RA #1. Note that base stations are classified by registration area (RA) in order to register AIoT devices. The AMF manages the base stations belonging to the registration areas.

[0029] The pubsub platform (Publish-Subscribe platform) was introduced in 5GS as the Data Collection Coordination Function (DCCF) and the Messaging Framework Adaptor Function (MFAF) (see Non-Patent Document 4). It is assumed that an NF, an AF, or a terminal will be the publisher or subscriber of the pubsub platform. DCCF and MFAF were introduced as an extension of the Network Data Analytics Function (NWDAF). DCCF and MFAF have a general-purpose configuration and can be applied as is to areas where a pubsub platform is required in next-generation systems, as long as the involvement of the terminal is excluded. The NF or AF becomes the publisher or subscriber and uses DCCF and MFAF. In existing specifications, the involvement of the terminal is limited. A terminal application can indirectly become a publisher by linking with a specific AF (see Non-Patent Document 4).

[0030] In step S101, the base station 1 may transmit unmodulated waves as appropriate for registration management, data transmission to other devices, and data reception from other devices. In step S102, the base station 1 transmits the unmodulated waves to the device 1. In step S103, the device 1 stores power. In step S104, the device 1 recognizes that it has UL data.

[0031] In step S105, the base station 1 transmits to the device 1 an arbitrary command including information indicating the access barring bit. The access barring bit may be set to any number of digits from 1 to n. Only when the access barring bit has the same value as the bit string (e.g., n digits from the least significant bit) at the corresponding position in the terminal identifier of the device itself, the terminal corresponding to the terminal identifier may be allowed to transmit data. In conventional access class barring, the minimum permitted terminal rate was 10%. For example, if the access barring bit is set to five digits, communication can be more distributed, such as 1 / 32 = 3.125%.

[0032] In step S106, the device 1 checks the access restriction bit against the device identifier to determine whether data transmission is permitted. If data transmission is permitted, the device 1 proceeds to the next step.

[0033] In step S107, device 1 prepares for a response. In step S108, base station 1 transmits an unmodulated wave to device 1. In step S109, device 1 transmits a connection grant request to base station 1, including device identifier #1, an UL transmission request ID, and, optionally, information indicating the number of required UL transmissions. In step S110, base station 1 determines whether to grant the connection, taking into account responses from other devices, i.e., based on the network congestion state. If granting the connection, proceed to the next step.

[0034] In step S111, the base station 1 transmits an unmodulated wave to the device 1. In step S112, the base station 1 transmits a connection grant including a device identifier #1, an UL transmission request ID, and optionally information indicating the required number of UL transmissions, to the device 1. In step S113, the device 1 performs UL transmission preparation.

[0035] In step S114, the base station 1 transmits an unmodulated wave to the device 1. In step S115, the device 1 transmits the device identifier #1, the UL transmission request ID, the optional number of transmissions (here, the first time), and the data content to the base station 1. In step S116, the base station 1 transmits an unmodulated wave to the device 1. In step S117, the device 1 transmits the device identifier #1, the UL transmission request ID, the optional number of transmissions (here, the second time), and the data content to the base station 1. In step S118, the base station 1 completes data acquisition.

[0036] In step S119, the device 1 and the base station 1 implicitly release the connection. In step S120A, the base station 1 sends an Initial UE message to the AMF, including an AIoT UL data transmission request including the device identifier #1 and the received data. In step S121A, the AMF sends the AIoT UL data transmission request including the device identifier #1 and the received data to any PubSub infrastructure. In step S122A, the any PubSub infrastructure sends an AIoT UL data transmission response to the AMF. In step S123A, the AMF sends a Downlink NAS Transport including the AIoT UL data transmission response to the base station 1.

[0037] Steps S120B and S121B may be executed instead of steps S120A to S123A. In step S120B, the base station 1 transmits an AIoT UL data transmission request including the device identifier #1 and the received data to any PubSub infrastructure. In step S121B, the any PubSub infrastructure transmits an AIoT UL data transmission response to the base station 1.

[0038] FIG. 5 is a sequence diagram illustrating an operation example (3) according to an embodiment of the present invention. FIG. 6 is a sequence diagram illustrating an operation example (4) according to an embodiment of the present invention. A DL data transmission procedure will be described using FIG. 5 and FIG. 6. Device 1 and device 2 are AIot devices. Base station 1 is base station 10A classified as AIot-RA#1. Base station 2 is base station 10B classified as AIot-RA#1. Device 1 is located in a position where it can communicate with base station 1, and device 2 is located in a position where it can communicate with base station 2.

[0039] In step S201, the NF recognizes that DL data exists in the NF itself. In step S202, the NF sends a Nudm_UECM_Get request including information indicating device identifier #1 to the UDM. In step S203, the UDM sends a Nudm_UECM_Get response including an AMF ID to the NF itself.

[0040] In step S204, an arbitrary NF sends an IoT DL data transmission request to the AMF, the request including the device identifier #1 and the data to be transmitted. In step S205, the AMF sends the device identifier to a base station in its registration area to request a call.

[0041] In step S206, the AMF sends paging to the base station 2, including device identifier #1 as the UE paging identity, RA #1 as the TAI list, and data to be transmitted. In step S207, the base station 2 transmits an unmodulated wave to the device 2. In step S208, the device 2 performs power storage. In step S209, the base station 2 sends a call to the device 2, including device identifier #1 and, optionally, information indicating the number of required DL transmissions. In step S210, the device 2 does not respond because the device identifier does not correspond to the device 2.

[0042] In step S211, the AMF sends paging to the base station 1, the paging including the device identifier #1 as the UE paging identity, the RA #1 as the TAI list, and the data to be transmitted. Note that either step S206 or step S211 may be executed first. In step S212, the base station 1 transmits an unmodulated wave to the device 1. In step S213, the device 1 performs power storage. In step S214, the base station 1 sends a call to the device 1, the call including the device identifier #1 and, optionally, information indicating the number of required DL transmissions. In step S215, the device 1 prepares for a response.

[0043] In step S216, the base station 1 transmits an unmodulated wave to the device 1. In step S217, the device 1 transmits a connection authorization request to the base station 1, including information indicating the device identifier #1. In step S218, the base station 1 transmits an unmodulated wave to the device 1. In step S219, the base station 1 transmits a DL transmission to the device 1, including the device identifier #1, a DL transmission request ID, and optionally the number of times (first time in this case) and data content. In step S220, the base station 1 transmits an unmodulated wave to the device 1. In step S221, the base station 1 transmits a DL transmission to the device 1, including the device identifier #1, a DL transmission request ID, and optionally the number of times (second time in this case) and data content.

[0044] In step S222, the device 1 completes data acquisition. In step S223, the base station 1 transmits an unmodulated wave to the device 1. In step S224, the device 1 transmits a DL transmission confirmation to the base station 1, including the device identifier #1 and the DL transmission request ID.

[0045] In step S225, the device 1 and the base station 1 implicitly release the connection. In step S226, the base station 1 sends an Uplink NAS Transport message including the device identifier #1 and an AIoT DL data transmission response including the received data to the AMF. In step S227, the AMF sends the AIoT DL data transmission response to any NF.

[0046] According to the above embodiment, an AIOT device without a power source can perform a service request procedure, transmit UL data, and receive DL data.

[0047] In other words, it is possible to execute connection management procedures for AIoT (Ambient Internet of Things) devices.

A network node comprising: a receiver that receives a downlink data transmission request message including a terminal identifier and data to be transmitted on the downlink from a network node; and a transmitter that transmits a call request message including the terminal identifier and the data to each base station belonging to a registration area in which the terminal identifier is registered, wherein the receiver receives a downlink data transmission response message from a base station to which the terminal has responded; and the transmitter transmits the downlink data transmission response message to the network node.

6. A communications method in which a base station executes the following steps: transmitting an unmodulated wave to a terminal when it is expected to send a message to the terminal or receive a message from the terminal; receiving a connection acceptance request from the terminal; determining whether to accept the connection for the terminal based on the network congestion state; and, if it is determined that the connection for the terminal is accepted, transmitting a connection acceptance message to the terminal, receiving data from the terminal, and transmitting the data to a network node.
