[0003] JP 2006-190549 A JP 2019-145355 A

[0004] In the configuration of Patent Document 1, each outer peripheral surface of the one-piece rubber stopper is in contact with the surface that faces each outer peripheral surface that forms the accommodation space. However, in this configuration, when the terminal fittings are inserted into the one-piece rubber stopper, the surfaces do not allow the one-piece rubber stopper to deform outward, and in the worst case scenario, the one-piece rubber stopper may be damaged by the terminal fittings, resulting in a deterioration of sealing performance.

[0005] Therefore, an object of the present disclosure is to provide a technique that can prevent a decrease in the sealing ability of a rubber stopper by providing room for deformation.

[0011] In the connector (1), the one-piece rubber stopper is accommodated in the accommodation recess with its outer circumferential surface separated from the inner circumferential surface, which allows the one-piece rubber stopper to escape outward and deform, making it easier for the one-piece rubber stopper to elastically deform when the terminal fittings are inserted into the seal holes, making it less likely for the one-piece rubber stopper to be damaged by the terminal fittings and preventing a decrease in sealing performance.

[0012] (2) A housing having a plurality of cavities, a plurality of terminal fittings to be accommodated in each of the cavities, a one-piece rubber stopper having a plurality of seal holes formed therethrough in the front-rear direction and communicating with each of the cavities from the rear, and a holder for holding the one-piece rubber stopper between the housing and the holder, wherein an electric wire connected to the terminal fitting is arranged in each of the seal holes in a liquid-tight manner, a accommodating recess for accommodating the one-piece rubber stopper is formed and opened on the rear surface of the housing, the accommodating recess has a back surface facing the front surface of the one-piece rubber stopper and an inner peripheral surface facing the outer peripheral surface of the one-piece rubber stopper, the holder has a pressing surface facing the rear surface of the one-piece rubber stopper, the front surface of the one-piece rubber stopper has a front peripheral portion collectively surrounding the front end openings of each of the seal holes, the one-piece rubber stopper has a front lip protruding forward from the front peripheral portion, and the front lip is configured to be in close contact with the back surface of the accommodating recess in a state where it is compressed to a greater extent than the portion of the front surface of the one-piece rubber stopper other than the front lip, a connector, wherein an outer peripheral surface of the one-piece rubber plug is spaced apart from the inner peripheral surface of the accommodating recess.

[0013] In the connector (2), the one-piece rubber stopper is accommodated in the accommodation recess with its outer circumferential surface separated from the inner circumferential surface, which allows the one-piece rubber stopper to escape outward and deform, making it easier for the one-piece rubber stopper to elastically deform when the terminal fittings are inserted into the seal holes. This makes it less likely for the one-piece rubber stopper to be damaged by the terminal fittings, and prevents a decrease in sealing performance.

[0014] (3) A connector as described in (1) or (2), in which a positioning boss is formed to protrude from at least one of the rear surface of the accommodating recess and the pressing surface of the holder, and a positioning recess into which the positioning boss fits is formed on the front or rear surface of the one-piece rubber plug that faces the positioning boss.

[0015] (3) The connector can determine the position of the lump-sum rubber stopper in the accommodating recess by fitting the positioning boss into the positioning recess, so that the outer surface of the lump-sum rubber stopper and the inner surface of the accommodating recess can be maintained apart.

[0016] [Details of the Embodiments of the Present Disclosure] <Embodiment 1> A first embodiment of a connector 1 of the present disclosure will be described with reference to Figs. 1 to 9. In the drawings, "front side" and "rear side" are represented by "F" and "B," respectively. Note that the directional references are defined for convenience and do not necessarily coincide with the directions when the connector 1 is mounted on a vehicle or the like.

[0017] 1 and 2, the connector 1 is a so-called lever-type connector and includes a housing 10, a plurality of terminal fittings 70 (see FIG. 9), a holder 11, a rubber plug 12, a seal ring 13, a retainer 14, a front member 15, a slider 16, a lever 17, and a cover 18.

[0018] [Housing Configuration] The housing 10 is configured as an inner housing. The housing 10 is made of synthetic resin and has insulating properties. As shown in Figures 3 and 4, the housing 10 has a terminal accommodating portion 10A, an accommodating recess 10B, and a pair of locking portions 10C.

[0019] The terminal accommodating portion 10A has a plurality of cavities 10D. Each cavity 10D extends in the front-rear direction and is exposed on both the front and rear sides of the housing 10 (see FIG. 4). The cavities 10D are spaced apart in the width and height directions of the terminal accommodating portion 10A (see FIG. 3).

[0020] The accommodating recess 10B is formed on the rear surface of the housing 10 and opens rearward. The accommodating recess 10B protrudes rearward in a cylindrical shape from the outer periphery of the terminal accommodating portion 10A. The internal space of the accommodating recess 10B communicates with the rear ends of the cavities 10D and is open to the rear of the housing 10. A one-piece rubber stopper 12 is accommodated in the accommodating recess 10B from the rear. The rearward-facing surface of the terminal accommodating portion 10A facing the accommodating recess 10B is the back surface 10E. The inside of the accommodating recess 10B is formed as an inner peripheral surface 10G. A plurality of positioning bosses 10F protrude rearward from the back surface 10E at positions that do not overlap with the cavities 10D.

[0021] The pair of locking portions 10C are provided on both sides of the accommodating recess 10B in the width direction (see FIG. 3). Each locking portion 10C protrudes outward in the width direction from the rear end of the accommodating recess 10B (see FIG. 3).

[0022] [Configuration of Terminal Fittings] The multiple terminal fittings 70 are conductive and formed by bending a metal plate or the like. As shown in FIG. 9 , the terminal fittings 70 are female. The terminal fittings 70 have a tubular (more specifically, rectangular tubular) main body 70A and a wire connection portion 70B. A mating terminal fitting (not shown) is electrically connected to the main body 70A. A conductor of an electric wire W is electrically connected to the wire connection portion 70B by crimping or the like. Each terminal fitting 70 is inserted into each cavity 10D from the rear and accommodated in the corresponding cavity 10D.

[0023] [Configuration of the Holder] The holder 11 is configured as an outer housing. The holder 11 is made of synthetic resin and has insulating properties. As shown in Fig. 5, the holder 11 has a rear wall portion 11A, a hood portion 11B, and a pair of locking portions 11C.

[0024] The rear wall 11A has a wall shape with a thickness in the front-to-rear direction. A plurality of through-holes 11D are formed in the rear wall 11A and extend in the front-to-rear direction. The through-holes 11D are aligned at intervals in the width and height directions. A terminal fitting 70 and an electric wire W are inserted into each through-hole 11D (see FIG. 9 ).

[0025] The hood portion 11B is formed in a cylindrical shape and protrudes forward from the outer periphery of the rear wall portion 11A. The forward-facing surface of the rear wall portion 11A facing the hood portion 11B is a pressing surface 11E. A plurality of positioning bosses 11F are provided on the pressing surface 11E and protrude forward.

[0026] A pair of locking portions 11C are provided on both widthwise sides of the hood portion 11B. Each locking portion 11C has a slit shape that is long in the height direction. Each locking portion 11C locks with a corresponding lock receiving portion 10C of the housing 10. When each locking portion 11C locks with each lock receiving portion 10C, the housing 10 is fully locked to the holder 11.

[0027] [Configuration of the One-Piece Rubber Stopper] The one-piece rubber stopper 12 is made of, for example, silicone rubber. The one-piece rubber stopper 12 has a rectangular plate shape with an outer diameter that is thick in the front-to-rear direction. As shown in FIGS. 6 to 8 , the one-piece rubber stopper 12 has multiple seal holes 12A, a front peripheral portion 12E, a rear peripheral portion 12F, a front lip 12B, a rear lip 12C, and multiple positioning recesses 12D. The multiple seal holes 12A are aligned in the horizontal and vertical directions and penetrate the one-piece rubber stopper 12A in the front-to-rear direction. A lip 12H is provided in the center of each seal hole 12A in the front-to-rear direction so as to reduce its diameter (see FIG. 7 ). The lips 12H of adjacent seal holes 12A in the width direction or height direction are offset in the front-to-rear direction (see FIG. 7 ).

[0028] The front peripheral portion 12E is a portion that collectively surrounds the front end openings of each seal hole 12A on the front surface of the one-piece rubber stopper 12. The rear peripheral portion 12F is a portion that collectively surrounds the rear end openings of each seal hole 12A on the rear surface of the one-piece rubber stopper 12. The width and height dimensions of the front peripheral portion 12E are smaller than the width and height dimensions of the rear peripheral portion 12F.

[0029] The front lip 12B is formed on the front surface of the one-piece rubber stopper 12 in a ring shape surrounding the multiple seal holes 12A and protruding forward. In other words, the front lip 12B protrudes forward from the front outer periphery 12E. The rear lip 12C is formed on the rear surface of the one-piece rubber stopper 12 in a ring shape surrounding the multiple seal holes 12A and protruding rearward. In other words, the rear lip 12C protrudes rearward from the rear outer periphery 12F. The front lip 12B and the rear lip 12C have semi-cylindrical cross sections. Multiple positioning recesses 12D are recessed on the front and rear surfaces of the one-piece rubber stopper 12 at positions that do not overlap with the seal holes 12A. These positioning recesses 12D are blind holes. Positioning bosses 10F of the housing 10 are fitted into each positioning recess 12D formed on the front surface. Positioning bosses 11F of the holder 11 are fitted into each positioning recess 12D formed on the rear surface.

[0030] [Connector Assembly] Next, an example of the procedure for assembling the connector 1 will be described, mainly with reference to Figure 9. First, the seal ring 13 is attached to the outer peripheral surface of the housing 10. Then, the retainer 14 is provisionally locked to the housing 10, and the front member 15 is attached. In addition, the slider 16 and the lever 17 are attached to the holder 11.

[0031] The one-piece rubber stopper 12 is accommodated in the accommodation recess 10B of the housing 10 from the rear. The one-piece rubber stopper 12 is positioned by fitting the positioning boss 10F of the accommodation recess 10B into the positioning recess 12D on the front surface. In this way, the outer peripheral surface 12G of the one-piece rubber stopper 12 is maintained spaced apart from the inner peripheral surface 10G of the accommodation recess 10B over the entire circumferential direction. At this time, each seal hole 12A of the one-piece rubber stopper 12 communicates with each cavity 10D from the rear.

[0032] Next, the housing 10, to which the seal ring 13, retainer 14, and front member 15 are attached, is inserted from the front into the hood portion 11B of the holder 11. During the insertion process, the locking portions 10C of the housing 10 are pressed against the inner peripheral surface of the hood portion 11B and bend inward in the width direction. As the housing 10 passes rearward through the locking portions 11C, they resiliently return to their original shape due to their elastic force. As a result, the locking portions 10C of the housing 10 are locked with the locking portions 11C of the holder 11, and the housing 10 is fully locked to the holder 11. The state in which the locking portions 10C are locked with the locking portions 11C is not shown.

[0033] As the housing 10 and holder 11 reach the fully locked state, the positioning boss 11F of the holder 11 is fitted into the positioning recess 12D (not shown) on the rear surface of the one-piece rubber plug 12. At the same time, the rear lip 12C is pressed from behind by the pressing surface 11E and compressed in the front-to-rear direction, and the front lip 12B is pressed from the front by the inner surface 10E and compressed in the front-to-rear direction.

[0034] The one-piece rubber stopper 12 is disposed between the rear end of the terminal accommodating portion 10A of the housing 10 and the front end of the rear wall portion 11A of the holder 11 in the front-to-rear direction. In this locked state, the distance between the rear surface 10E of the housing 10 and the pressing surface 11E of the rear wall portion 11A of the holder 11 is the same as the plate thickness of the one-piece rubber stopper 12 in the front-to-rear direction excluding the front lip 12B and the rear lip 12C. As a result, the rear lip 12C is compressed and tightly fitted to the pressing surface 11E of the holder 11 with a greater amount of compression (overlap) than the portion of the rear surface of the one-piece rubber stopper 12 other than the rear lip 12C. Furthermore, the front lip 12B is compressed and tightly fitted to the rear surface 10E of the accommodating recess 10B with a greater amount of compression than the portion of the front surface of the one-piece rubber stopper 12 other than the front lip 12B. In this locked state, the holder 11 holds the one-piece rubber stopper 12 between itself and the housing 10.

[0035] At this time, the rear surface 10E of the accommodating recess 10B faces the front surface of the one-piece rubber stopper 12. The inner peripheral surface 10G of the accommodating recess 10B faces the outer peripheral surface 12G of the one-piece rubber stopper 12. The outer peripheral surface 12G of the one-piece rubber stopper 12 is disposed away from the inner peripheral surface 10G. The pressing surface 11E of the holder 11 faces the rear surface of the one-piece rubber stopper 12. The rear surface 10E of the accommodating recess 10B may or may not be in contact with the front surface of the one-piece rubber stopper 12. The pressing surface 11E of the holder 11 may or may not be in contact with the rear surface of the one-piece rubber stopper 12.

[0036] Next, the terminal fitting 70 connected to the electric wire W is inserted from the rear into the through hole 11D of the holder 11 and then into the seal hole 12A located in front of the through hole 11D. Because the outer peripheral surface 12G of the one-piece rubber stopper 12 is maintained spaced apart from the inner peripheral surface 10G of the accommodating recess 10B over the entire circumferential direction, the one-piece rubber stopper 12 can elastically deform outward even when the terminal fitting 70 and the electric wire W are inserted into the seal hole 12A. This minimizes friction between the seal hole 12A and the terminal fitting 70 and the electric wire W. The terminal fitting 70 is inserted into the cavity 10D of the terminal accommodating portion 10A. Once the terminal fitting 70 is placed in the cavity 10D, the outer peripheral surface of the electric wire W comes into liquid-tight contact with the inner peripheral surface of the seal hole 12A. Once the terminal fitting 70 is inserted to the correct position, the retainer 14 is pushed into the full locking position. This prevents the terminal fittings 70 from coming off. At this time, the electric wires W are liquid-tightly arranged in the seal holes 12A. Then, the cover 18 is attached to the holder 11, and the connector 1 is completed.

[0037] Next, the operation of the first embodiment will be described. The connector 1 includes a housing 10 having multiple cavities 10D, multiple terminal fittings 70 accommodated in each of the cavities 10D, a single-piece rubber stopper 12 formed with multiple seal holes 12A extending in the front-to-rear direction and communicating with each of the cavities 10D from the rear, and a holder 11 that holds the single-piece rubber stopper 12 between the housing 10 and the holder 11. Electric wires W connected to the terminal fittings 70 are disposed in each seal hole 12A in a liquid-tight manner. An accommodating recess 10B is formed in the rear surface of the housing 10 and accommodates the single-piece rubber stopper 12. The accommodating recess 10B has a back surface 10E facing the front surface of the single-piece rubber stopper 12 and an inner peripheral surface 10G facing the outer peripheral surface 12G of the single-piece rubber stopper 12. The holder 11 has a pressing surface 11E facing the rear surface of the single-piece rubber stopper 12. The rear surface of the one-piece rubber stopper 12 has a rear surface outer periphery 12F that collectively surrounds the rear end openings of each seal hole 12A. The one-piece rubber stopper 12 has a rear lip 12C that protrudes rearward from the rear surface outer periphery 12F. The rear lip 12C is configured to be compressed and tightly attached to the pressing surface 11E of the holder 11 with a greater compression amount than the rest of the rear surface of the one-piece rubber stopper 12. The outer periphery 12G of the one-piece rubber stopper 12 is positioned away from the inner periphery 10G of the installation recess 10B.

[0038] According to this configuration, the one-piece rubber stopper 12 is accommodated in the accommodation recess 10B with the outer peripheral surface 12G of the one-piece rubber stopper 12 spaced apart from the inner peripheral surface 10G of the accommodation recess 10B. Therefore, the one-piece rubber stopper 12 has room to escape outward and deform, which makes it easier for the one-piece rubber stopper 12 to elastically deform when the terminal fitting 70 is inserted into the seal hole 12A, making the one-piece rubber stopper 12 less likely to be damaged by the terminal fitting 70 and preventing a decrease in sealing performance.

[0039] The connector 1 includes a housing 10 having multiple cavities 10D, multiple terminal fittings 70 accommodated in each of the cavities 10D, a single-piece rubber stopper 12 formed with multiple seal holes 12A penetrating in the front-to-rear direction and communicating with each of the cavities 10D from the rear, and a holder 11 that holds the single-piece rubber stopper 12 between the housing 10 and the single-piece rubber stopper 12. Electric wires W connected to the terminal fittings 70 are disposed in each seal hole 12A in a liquid-tight manner. An accommodating recess 10B is formed in the rear surface of the housing 10 and opens to accommodate the single-piece rubber stopper 12. The front surface of the single-piece rubber stopper 12 has a front peripheral portion 12E that collectively surrounds the front end openings of each seal hole 12A. The one-piece rubber stopper 12 has a front lip 12B that protrudes forward from a front outer peripheral portion 12E. The front lip 12B is configured to fit tightly against the inner surface 10E of the accommodating recess 10B in a state where it is compressed to a greater extent than the remaining portion of the front surface of the one-piece rubber stopper 12. The outer peripheral surface 12G of the one-piece rubber stopper 12 is spaced apart from the inner peripheral surface 10G of the accommodating recess 10B.

[0040] According to this configuration, the one-piece rubber stopper 12 is accommodated in the accommodation recess 10B with the outer peripheral surface 12G of the one-piece rubber stopper 12 spaced apart from the inner peripheral surface 10G of the accommodation recess 10B.

[0041] Positioning bosses 10F, 11F are formed to protrude from the inner surface 10E of the accommodating recess 10B and the pressing surface 11E of the holder 11, and positioning recesses 12D into which the positioning bosses 10F, 11F fit are formed on the front and rear surfaces of the one-piece rubber stopper 12 that face the positioning bosses 10F, 11F. With this configuration, the one-piece rubber stopper 12 can be positioned in the accommodating recess 10B by fitting the positioning bosses 10F, 11F into the positioning recesses 12D, so that the outer peripheral surface 12G of the one-piece rubber stopper 12 and the inner peripheral surface 10G of the accommodating recess 10B can be maintained apart.
