Abstract
Description
[0001] REDUCED THERMAL BRIDGING WITH EMBOSSING
[0002] TECHNICAL FIELD
[0003] The teachings herein relate to a HVAC installation such as an HVAC component having a reduced heat bridging and a method for providing a reduced heat bridging in an HVAC installation such as in an HVAC component .
[0004] BACKGROUND
[0005] Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC ) is the use of various technologies to control the temperature , humidity, and purity of the air in an enclosed space . Commonly HVAC systems comprises many different components such as ducts and / or air handling units (AHU - or air handler) . An AHU is a device used to regulate and circulate air as part of the heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC ) system, and is usually a large metal box containing a blower, furnace or A / C elements , filter racks or chambers , sound attenuators , and dampers . Air handlers usually connect to a ductwork ventilation system that distributes the conditioned air through the building and returns it to the AHU, sometimes exhausting air to the atmosphere and bringing in fresh air . Small air handlers , for local use , are called terminal units .
[0006] Components of HVAC systems usually handle or direct ( / guide ) air flows ( or other gas flows ) where the gas flow is of a different temperature than the surrounding environment , i . e . the environment outside the air handler or other HVAC component . Furthermore , such HVAC installations such as HVAC components are usually made of different sheets of metal that are j oined together . Commonly, these sheets of metal are prevented from forming cold ( / or heat ) bridges to the surroundings by inserting an insulating layer of a material ( for example made of polymer materials ) between two sheets of metal , thereby preventing heat transfer through the metal sheets and the surroundings , while keeping the two sheets of metal separated .
[0007] However, such inserts are difficult and cumbersome to mount , often requiring manual labor . The use of such inserts also adds to the cost of the HVAC installation in that the ( sheet ) surfaces needed to be covered are often quite large , requiring a lot of material .
[0008] There is thus a need for an improved manner of preventing heat transfer between the inside and the outside of an HVAC installation that is easier and cheaper to assemble .
[0009] SUMMARY
[0010] Hereafter no difference will be made between a wall or a panel , and they will be commonly referred to as a wall .
[0011] The inventors have realized that it is not possible to simply remove the insert - which would reduce the assembly and material cost of an HVAC installation such as an HVAC component . However, the inventors have realized that the same heat insulation ( i . e . prevention of heat ( / cold) bridges ) is possible simply utili zing an air ( or other gas ) gap between two sheets for preventing the heat ( / cold) bridge and that by providing one or both of the sheets with raised portions that abut the other sheet when assembled .
[0012] The teachings herein thus provide an HVAC system or an HVAC installation such as an HVAC component wherein a reduced heat transf er / bridging is provided between two sheets of the HVAC installation by a first sheet ( at least ) comprising one or more raised portions that abuts a second sheet when mounted .
[0013] The teachings herein also provide a method for providing a reduced heat transf er / bridging between two sheets by providing a first sheet ( at least ) with one or more raised portions that abuts a second sheet when mounted .
[0014] The teachings herein also provide a use of one or more raised portions arranged on a first sheet ( at least ) which one or more raised portions abuts a second sheet when mounted for providing a reduced heat transf er / bridging between two sheets of the HVAC installation such as an HVAC component .
[0015] The teachings herein provide for a solution where a HVAC installation such as an HVAC component comprises a first sheet and a second sheet that are to be mounted ( or j oined) together, wherein the first sheet is provided with one or more than one raised portion that abuts the second sheet when mounted, and wherein the one or more than one raised portion separates the first sheet from the second sheet . As a skilled person would understand, the main parts of the sheets are separated from one another, as the only touching point ( s ) between them is where the raised portions abut the second sheet , and as there is to be an airgap therein, the air gap will be in the separation . The raised portions thus serve to provide a separation between the two sheets , in which separation the airgap will be where only ( the edge of ) the raised portion and possibly the edges of the sheet touch .
[0016] By only allowing the first sheet to abut the second sheet through the raised portion, an air ( or other gas ) gap is provided which acts as an insulating member between the two sheets . Furthermore , as the raised portions can easily be provided during manufacture of the sheets , or after, the sheets are easy to assemble and mount to one another, not requiring that an insulating strip or other material is added to the assembly .
[0017] Also, this provides a sturdy construction only using the two sheets . Of course , there may be other sheets at other positions in the HVAC installation such as an HVAC component , but only two sheets are used to provide the wall of the HVAC installation such as an HVAC component .
[0018] Furthermore , as the raised portions can be made relatively small , the heat transfer effected through the contact area between the two sheets is small , and the assembly thus prevents heat ( / cold) bridging through a resulting wall , whereby the HVAC installation such as an HVAC component can thus be made as insulating as in the prior art , but at a lower cost .
[0019] In some embodiments the first sheet comprises more than one raised portion . By distributing the raised portions , the sheets are separated from one another in multiple places , which increases the rigidity of the resulting wall or panel .
[0020] In some embodiments the first sheet abuts the second sheet through an end of the raised portion .
[0021] In some embodiments the end of the raised portion is of the same si ze or smaller than a thickness of the first sheet .
[0022] In some embodiments the first sheet abuts the second sheet through a corner of the end of the raised portion .
[0023] In some embodiments a raised portion is provided through a punched hole , wherein the sides of the punched hole will form the raised portion .
[0024] In some embodiments the punched hole is rectangular .
[0025] In some embodiments the punched hole is round .
[0026] In some embodiments the punched hole is H-shaped . In some embodiments a raised portion is provided through a distance component mounted to the first sheet , such as a disc . In some embodiments the distance component is of a small size compared to the sheet . In some embodiments , the distance component is of size smaller than 5 , 3 , 2 , or 1 % of a size of the first sheet .
[0027] The solution is also or alternatively provided through an HVAC installation such as an HVAC component as per the appended claims .
[0028] The solution is also or alternatively provided through the use of a raised portion of a first sheet of an HVAC installation such as an HVAC component in order to separate the first sheet from a second sheet as per the appended claims , in order to reduce the heat ( / cold) bridging between the first and the second sheet when j oined together .
[0029] The solution is also or alternatively provided through a method as per the appended claims , the method being for reducing a heat ( / cold) bridging between a first and a second sheet of an HVAC installation such as an HVAC component when j oined together , by providing one or more than one raised portions to the first sheet , which raised portion ( s ) abut ( s ) the second sheet and separate ( s ) the first sheet from the second sheet .
[0030] Further embodiments and benefits of the present teachings will be apparent from the following description .

[0038] DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0039] The teachings herein will be disclosed with simultaneous reference to the appended figures .
[0040] Figure 1 shows a schematic view of various embodiments of an HVAC installation such as an HVAC component 11 in an HVAC system 10 according to the teachings herein . The HVAC system 10 comprises one or more HVAC installations such as HVAC components 11 . In the example of figure 1 the HVAC system 10 comprises an air handler unit 11A, a plurality of ducts 11B , 11C and a further HVAC component 11D such as a ventilation unit . An air handler unit 11A is one example of an HVAC component 11 , and a duct 11B, 11C is another example of an HVAC component 11 .
[0041] Figure 2 shows a schematic view of various embodiments of a portion of an HVAC installation such as an HVAC component 11 wherein a first sheet 1 is j oined to a second sheet 2 of the HVAC installation such as an HVAC component 11. As would be understood by a skilled person, a sheet basically consists of a main panel (the actual sheet - referenced 1A in figure 4C) along which there are edges (referenced IB in figure 4C) . An edge may be straight, ie only extending in the plane of the sheet - the main panel (as shown in figure 4C) . An edge may also be curved or bent, for example 90 degrees. Such a bent edge may be used to provide an edge to be pressed against the other sheet (or an intermediate material or sheet) when mounted .
[0042] As is illustrated in Figure 2, the first sheet 1 is arranged with one or more than one raised portion 3. The raised portion serves to separate the first sheet 1 from the second sheet and abut the second sheet 2 when mounted. The only touching points between the two sheets will thus be the raised portions (and possibly only an edge of the raised portions) and optionally any bent or curved edges, whereby the main panels of the sheets are separated from one another.
[0043] As is also illustrated, the separation of the first sheet 1 from the second sheet 2 provides for an air (or other gas) gap 4 between the two sheets 1,2. This air gap provides for an insulating layer between the two sheets, and as the only contact between the two sheets is where the raised portion (s) of the first sheet 1 abuts the second sheet 2 is the edge of the raised portion 3, the heat transfer between the two sheets is minimal, and the heat ( / cold) bridging between the two sheets is thus kept to a minimum and reduced compared to the two sheets being mounted together without the insulating air gap 4.
[0044] It should be noted that the main portion (90, 95, 98, or 99%) of the gap 4 between the two sheets is empty (i.e. filled with air or other gas) , and void of other insulating material, such as an insulating strip as in the prior art . As a skilled person would understand, some material , such as paint or rust protection may be applied to a surface of one of the sheets and thus also be in the gap 4 , however, this will be of a negligent size and will thus not significantly af fect the heat transfer .
[0045] It should be noted that although the description herein is focused on the first sheet 1 being arranged with raised portion ( s ) 3 , it should be noted that also the second sheet2 may be arranged with such raised portions . It should also be noted that the first sheet 1 may be an outside sheet or an inside sheet depending on the design . It should also be noted that the first sheet 1 and the second sheet 2 may be different portions of a same sheet 1-2 having been folded so that the first and second sheets 1 , 2 are arranged close enough to one another to be able to be j oined together .
[0046] Figure 3 shows a schematic view of various embodiments of an HVAC installation such as an HVAC component 11 , where a sheet 1-2 has been folded so that one end, i . e . a first sheet (portion ) 1 is close enough to a second sheet (portion ) 2 for them to be j oined . In the example of figure 3 , the two sheets (portions ) 1 , 2 overlap .
[0047] The two sheets 1 , 2 in figure 3 are part of a first panel 6 of an HVAC installation such as an HVAC component 11 , where the first panel 6 is to be mounted to a second panel 7 .
[0048] As can be seen, a raised portion 3 is arranged between the first and the second sheets (portions ) 1 , 2 thereby providing an air gap in an area of the first panel 6when mounted to the second panel 7 . It should be noted that even if the description herein is focused on the raised portions being arranged on the first sheet , they can of course also be arranged on the second sheet . It should also be noted that the first sheet may be an inner sheet or an outer sheet and there is no restriction as to which sheet is labeled first or second - other than that the first sheet is arranged with raised portions 3.
[0049] As can also been seen, in embodiments where the raised portion 3 is a hole, an attachment device 5, such as a screw or a (pop) rivet, can be inserted through the whole, whereby the raised portion 3 has a double purpose. And, in such embodiments, the provision of the raised portion thus does not constitute additional work as the hole for receiving the attachment device, would have had to be provided anyway.
[0050] Figures 4A, 4B, 4C, 4D, 4E and 4F each shows a schematic view of various embodiments of a raised portion according to the teachings herein. Figure 4A shows some various embodiments of a raised portion 3, wherein the raised portion 3 is a hole. Such a raised hole is preferably preferred through punching such a hole. The hole in figure 4A is a round, but as a skilled person would understand there are other possibilities for providing punched holes that are not round. Figure 4A also clearly shows an edge 3A of the raised portion 3. As would be understood, the edge 3A is the only part of the first sheet 1 that will abut the second sheet 2 when the two are mounted. And, as can also be seen in figure 4A and as a skilled person would understand, the surface of the edge 3A is significantly smaller (1% or smaller than the surface of the first sheet 1) whereby the heat transfer between the first and second sheets is significantly reduced compared to the sheets being mounted side-to-side .
[0051] Figure 4B shows a side view of some various embodiments of a raised portion 3, wherein dimensions of a raised portion 3 is indicated. A height h of the raised portion is indicated, and is in some examples 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4, 5 or 10 mm or in any range there-in-between . A width or diameter d of the raised portion is also indicated, and is in some examples 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 , 8, 10, 12, 15 or 20 mm or in any range there-in- between. A thickness t of the sheet 1 is also indicated, and is in some examples 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, 0.9, 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.5, or mm or in any range there-in-between. It would be understood that the thickness of the edge 3A of the raised portion 3 is of the same or smaller size as the thickness of the material. In the example of figure 4B, the raised portion 3 is shown as having parallel and vertical walls. However, if the raised portion is provided with walls that are not vertical (and not parallel) , only a corner of the edge 3A will abut the second sheet, thereby further reducing the heat ( / cold) bridging between the two sheets through the raised portion 3.
[0052] Figure 4C shows a perspective view and a side view of some various embodiments of a raised portion 3, wherein the raised portion 3 is provided as an indentation or embossing of the sheet 1. Such embossing can be provided through punching. In such example embodiments, the edge 3A will be the top of the embossed raised portion.
[0053] Figure 4D shows some various embodiments of a raised portion 3, wherein the raised portion 3 is provided as a rectangular and bent, possibly punched, portion. In case the portion is not bent fully, the edge will be a corner of the bent portion.
[0054] Figure 4E shows some various embodiments of a raised portion 3, wherein the raised portion 3 is provided as a rectangular, possibly punched, hole 3.
[0055] Figure 4F shows some various embodiments of a raised portion 3, wherein the raised portion 3 is provided as a distance component 3, for example a disc, which is inserted between the two sheets when or before mounting . In some embodiments the distance component is attached ( for example through an adhesive agent , or through welding or soldering ) to the first sheet 1 before being mounted, thereby simplifying the assembly . As the distance component 3 is significantly smaller than the surface of the first sheet overlapping with the second sheet , the heat transfer is significantly reduced, and the price of the disc is also much lower than compared to filling the whole surface / gap with an insulating material . In some embodiments the distance device has a height and a diameter (width ) as discussed in relation to the raised portion of figure 3B . In some embodiments , the distance component is of si ze smaller than 5 , 3 , 2 , or 1 % of a size of the first sheet .
[0056] It should be noted that the various raised portions 3 discussed herein need not be exclusive to a HVAC component , but one embodiment of portion ( s ) may be used in one place of the first sheet and a second embodiment of portion ( s ) may be used in one place of the first sheet , and a same sheet may thus have dif ferent types of raised portions .
[0057] Figure 5 shows a flow chart for a general method for various embodiments of the teachings herein, wherein a raised portion is provided 510 to a first sheet 1 that is mounted 520 a second sheet 2 , whereby the raised portion abuts 530 the second sheet 2 , thereby providing a separation 540 between the two sheets , and also providing 550 an ( insulating ) air - or other gas - gap 4 between the two sheets 1 , 2 .
[0058] The teachings herein thus provide for a method where two sheets of an HVAC installation such as an HVAC component are to be mounted and wherein a first sheet 1 is arranged with raised portions 3 prior to mounting, mounting the first sheet to the second sheet 2 whereby the one or more raised portions 3 abuts the second sheet 2 thereby separating the two sheets and providing an airgap between them.
[0059] It should be noted that a sheet as discussed herein may be a single sheet or a portion of a sheet . It should also be noted that the two sheets may be different sheets , but only partially overlapping . In some embodiments , the first sheet 1 relates to a portion overlapping a portion of second sheet , irrespective whether the first sheet is part of the same main sheet as the second sheet .
[0060] The teachings herein thus relate to an HVAC system or an HVAC installation such as an HVAC component wherein a reduced heat transf er / bridging is provided between two sheets of the HVAC installation such as an HVAC component by a first sheet ( at least ) comprising one or more raised portions that abuts a second sheet when mounted .
[0061] The teachings herein also relate to a method for providing a reduced heat transf er / bridging between two sheets by providing a first sheet ( at least ) with one or more raised portions that abuts a second sheet when mounted .
[0062] The teachings herein also relate to the use of one or more raised portions arranged on a first sheet ( at least ) which one or more raised portions abuts a second sheet when mounted for providing a reduced heat transf er / bridging between two sheets of the HVAC installation such as an HVAC component .
[0063] The teachings herein also provide a method where two sheets of an HVAC installation such as an HVAC component are to be mounted and wherein a first sheet ( 1 ) is arranged with raised portions ( 3 ) prior to mounting, mounting the first sheet to the second sheet ( 2 ) whereby the one or more raised portions ( 3 ) abuts the second sheet ( 2 ) thereby separating the two sheets and providing an airgap between them . As discussed in the above, the raised portions can be arranged on both the first and the second sheet.
[0064] Figure 6A shows an example implementation of a panel to be used in an HVAC installation where a first sheet 1 is arranged as a lid for an HVAC component 11 being a panel. Figure 6A shows two views of the panel 11, one separated view before mounting (upper figure) and one after mounting (lower figure) . A first sheet 1 is arranged over a second sheet 2. In this example, the second sheet 2 is arranged in a box like fashion, having side walls 2-3 and a bottom 2-4, and a plurality of edge portions 2-1, 2-2. The edge portions 2-1, 2- 2 of the second sheet 2 are arranged with raised portions 2-3, and the second sheet 2 is thereby arranged with raised portions. The sheets are therefore arranged as a first panel wall 1 and a second panel wall 2 of the panel 11. It should be noted that the box-like construction of the second sheet (or in this example, the second panel wall) 2 may be made in many different manners and may be made of a single sheet of metal, or several sheets such as one for the bottom, one for (each) side wall, and one for (each) edge portion.
[0065] The box-like arrangement includes an inner opening in which an insulating member 4 is to be arranged when mounted. The insulating member 4 is made of insulating material such as for example glass- or mineralwool.
[0066] As is shown, at least one of the edge portions 2-1, 2-2 of the second panel wall is arranged with raised portions 3-2. The raised portion may be any as discussed in the text with reference to figures 2, 3 and 4A-F. The edge portions 2-1, 2-2 as shown in figure 6A resembles the illustrations of figures 2 and 4F.
[0067] As discussed herein, the raised portions 3-2 serve to minimize the contact between the sheets (panel walls) and thereby minimizes the heat transfer between the sheets (panel walls ) , while also allowing - when the raised portion is used for mounting as discussed above - for a stable mounting . This provides an edge of the panel which can be mounted to other components or parts of an HVAC system as in figure 1 and other embodiments discussed herein .
[0068] The raised portion of shown in figure 6A, as well as in figures 2 and 3 are spaced apart at a distance that is chosen depending on the construction of the HVAC installation to minimize the number of raised portions while providing a stable and robust installation . The distance between raised portions and thus also the number of raised portion, as well as the size of the raised portions , depends on the material chosen for and the size of the sheets . In some example embodiments , the distance is set to be 15 , 20 , 25 or 33% , or in any range thereinbetween, of the length of the sheet seen from center-to-center of the raised portion . For the example shown in figure 6A, the distance may be for the edge portion 2-1 , 2-2 and not the whole sheet (panel wall ) 1 , 2 .
[0069] In some example embodiments , the distance is set to be 3 , 4 , 5 or 6 times , or in any range thereinbetween, the length of the raised portion seen from center-to-center of the raised portion .
[0070] It should be noted though that the raised portion are distributed at distances from one another that are significantly (more than 200 % ) greater than the size (width ) of the raised portion .
[0071] As can also be seen in the figures , the raised portions are not arranged over the whole surface of the sheet , and the arrangement is thus significantly different from for example a corrugated sheet . In some example embodiments the raised portions are arranged only along an edge (portion ) of the sheet ( s ) . As shown in the figures the raised portions may be arranged in a single line , or alternatively two alternating lines , along the edge .
[0072] In some example embodiments the raised portions are thus only arranged in one direction parallel to an edge portion .
[0073] As mentioned above , the (bottom or) second panel wall 2 is arranged in a box-like manner, whereas the ( top or ) first panel wall 1 is ( substantially) flat . However , the ( top or ) first panel wall 1 may also be arranged in a box-like manner having sidewalls 1-3 , edge portions 1-1 , 1-2 and a bottom 1-4 . In some embodiments - as discussed above - the first sheet may be arranged with raised portions as well as the second sheet , or as an alternative to the second sheet . In some embodiments the sheets are arranged with raised portions in an alternating fashion, for example with some edge portions of the first sheet being arranged with raised portions , and some edge portions of the second sheet being arranged with raised portions .
[0074] Figure 6B shows some example embodiments where also the top panel wall 1 is arranged in a box-like manner having sidewalls 1-3 , edge portions 1-1 , 1-2 and a bottom 1-4 , but where the side walls 1-3 are arranged on an outer or far side as regards the insulating member 4 as opposed to along or on a same side of the insulating member as for the ( lower ) second panel wall 2 shown in figure 6A . Such a construction provides for a further airgap ( and thus better insulation) between the outer section of the first sheet and the second sheet when mounted . It also provides for a smoother outer circumference .
[0075] Figure 6C shows some example embodiments where also the bottom panel wall 2 is arranged in a box-li ke manner having sidewalls 2 -3 , edge portions 2-1 , 2-2 and a bottom 2-4 where the side walls 1-3 are arranged on an outer or far side as regards the insulating member 4 and where the top panel wall 1 is arranged as a flat panel .
[0076] Figure 6D shows some example embodiments where the top panel wall 1 is arranged in a box-like manner having sidewalls 1-3 , edge portions 1-1 , 1-2 and a bottom 1-4 , but where the side walls 1-3 are arranged on an outer or far side as regards the insulating member 4 and also the bottom panel wall 2 is arranged in a box-like manner having sidewalls 2-3 , edge portions 2-1 , 2-2 and a bottom 2-4 where the side walls 1-3 are arranged on an outer or far side as regards the insulating member 4 .
[0077] As is shown in figures 6B and 6D, when the top panel wall 11 is arranged in a box-like manner the same or another insulating member 4 is also housed in the top wall panel 1 .
[0078] As the panel 11 holds or houses an insulating member , the panel 11 is an insulating panel 11 .
