INTEGRATED RETAINER FOR TRIM TO FOAM ATTACHMENT CLAIM OF PRIORITY

[0001] This patent application claims the benefit of priority to Chen et al, U.S. Provisional Patent Application Serial Number 63 / 548,916, entitled “INTEGRATED RETAINER FOR TRIM TO FOAM ATTACHMENT,” filed on February 2, 2024, which is hereby incorporated by reference herein in its entirety. TECHNICAL FIELD

[0002] An integrated retainer for trim to foam attachment. BACKGROUND

[0003] In the realm of vehicle manufacturing, the design and assembly of vehicle seats involve a multitude of components and materials. A primary component is the seat trim, the outermost layer of the seat that directly contacts the occupant. Typically crafted from materials like leather or cloth, the seat trim is engineered for comfort and aesthetic appeal.

[0004] The seat trim is affixed to a foam vehicle seat body, which serves as the structural support. This foam body is generally composed of a resilient material capable of enduring the weight of the occupant while providing a comfortable seating experience. It is often molded into the seat's desired shape, incorporating features such as contours and grooves to enhance comfort and ergonomics.

[0005] Attaching the seat trim to the foam vehicle seat body is a process that demands precision and care. Traditionally, this is accomplished using attachment mechanisms like clips, which are designed to fasten the seat trim securely to the foam body, facilitating easy installation and removal. These clips are typically fashioned from durable materials like plastic to endure the stresses associated with vehicle seat usage.

[0006] However, conventional attachment systems often rely on receivers embedded within the foam seat body to secure these clips. This approach has 1 6474.031WO1several drawbacks. Embedding receivers increases manufacturing complexity, requiring precise alignment and additional steps in the production process. It also adds to the cost due to the extra components and labor involved. The fixed locations of the receivers limit design flexibility, making adjustments or repositioning of the seat trim challenging without modifying the foam body. Over time, the embedded receivers can wear out or become damaged, leading to potential integrity issues with the seat trim attachment and making repairs difficult and expensive. SUMMARY

Below, the examples will be described with reference to the accompanying figures.

[0038] Addressing the challenges associated with conventional seat trim attachment methods, a novel vehicle seat trim retainer assembly is introduced. This assembly employs a series of spring-loaded clips that anchor directly to the foam of the vehicle seat body, eliminating the complexity and cost associated with embedding plastic receivers in the foam body.

[0039] The vehicle seat trim retainer assembly comprises a flexible support rail and a plurality of spring-loaded clips. The flexible support rail serves as a base for the spring-loaded clips, providing a robust and adaptable structure that can be tailored to the specific dimensions of the vehicle seat body. The flexible nature of the support rail allows it to conform to the contours of the seat body, ensuring a secure and precise fit.

[0040] Each spring-loaded clip on the flexible support rail is designed to engage directly with the foam vehicle seat body. These clips are formed with at least two spring-loaded elements, each featuring a hook. The spring-loaded elements are arranged in a scissor-like manner, allowing them to flex towards one another when being inserted into the foam and spring away from one another when exiting the backside of the foam. This action enables the hooks to engage with the backside of the foam, providing a secure anchor point for the seat trim. 6 6474.031WO1

[0041] The spring-loaded clips are designed to be inserted into slots in the foam vehicle seat body. These slots can be molded into the foam at desired locations, providing flexibility in the positioning of the seat trim. Once inserted, the hooks of the spring-loaded clips engage with the backside of the foam, holding the seat trim in place under tension and preventing the clips from being pulled out of the foam.

[0042] Importantly, the spring-loaded clips do not incorporate an actual spring. Instead, the spring-like action is achieved through the inherent flexibility of the rigid plastic members that form the spring-loaded elements. This design simplifies the construction of the clips, reducing manufacturing costs and increasing durability.

[0043] To remove the spring-loaded clips from the foam, the clips are rotated approximately 90 degrees. This action disengages the hooks from the foam, allowing the clips to be pulled out of the foam. This feature facilitates easy removal and repositioning of the seat trim, providing additional flexibility in the seat assembly process.

[0044] Referring to FIG. 1A, the vehicle seat trim retainer assembly 100 is depicted. The assembly 100 includes a flexible support rail 102 and a series of spring-loaded clips, such as spring-loaded clips 104A, 104B and 104C, formed on the flexible support rail 102. The flexible support rail 102 serves as a base for the spring-loaded clips, providing a robust and adaptable structure that can be tailored to the specific dimensions of the vehicle seat body. The flexible nature of the support rail 102 allows it to conform to the contours of the seat body, ensuring a secure and precise fit.

[0045] These spring-loaded clips, such as clip 104A, are designed to engage directly with the foam vehicle seat body. In one example, the clips are formed with two spring-loaded elements, each featuring a hook. The spring-loaded elements are arranged in a scissor-like manner, allowing them to flex towards one another when being inserted into the foam and spring away from one another when exiting the backside of the foam. This action enables the hooks to engage with the backside of the foam, providing a secure anchor point for the seat trim. 7 6474.031WO1

[0046] In some cases, the flexible support rail 102 can be attached, for example sewn, to the vehicle seat trim at desired locations. This configuration allows for the precise positioning of the spring-loaded clips on the seat trim, ensuring a secure and accurate fit when the seat trim is installed on the vehicle seat body. In particular, the flexible support rail 102 can be attached, for example sewn, to the vehicle seat trim at locations corresponding to grooves in the vehicle seat body.

[0047] Turning to FIG. 1B, a different perspective of the vehicle seat trim retainer assembly 120 is presented. This assembly 120 also includes a flexible support rail 122, similar to the one described in FIG. 1A. The flexible support rail 122 serves as a base for the spring-loaded clips, such as spring-loaded clip 124A, 124B, and 124C. These clips are methodically aligned and affixed to the flexible support rail 122. This alignment and affixation of the spring-loaded clips on the flexible support rail 122 demonstrate the assembly's design for anchoring vehicle seat trim to a seat body with substantial precision and order.

[0048] Each spring-loaded clip, visibly protruding from the rail, is crafted to effectively grasp onto the vehicle seat body, providing a secure and reliable hold for the seat trim. The clips an flexible rail may be molded at the same time or the clips and flexible rail may be molded separately at which point the clips are attached to the flexible rail. The spring-loaded clips are designed to be inserted into slots in the foam vehicle seat body. These slots can be molded into the foam at desired locations, providing flexibility in the positioning of the seat trim. Once inserted, the hooks of the spring-loaded clips engage with the backside of the foam, holding the seat trim in place under tension and preventing the clips from being pulled out of the foam.

[0049] In addition to the features described above, each of the spring-loaded clips may optionally include retention legs 126. These retention legs 126 are designed to enhance the retention of the spring-loaded clips in the foam vehicle seat body. When the spring-loaded clips are inserted into the foam, the retention legs 126 engage with the internal structure of the foam. This engagement increases the holding power of the spring-loaded clips, further securing the seat trim to the foam vehicle seat body. The retention legs 126 provide an additional level of security, ensuring that the spring-loaded clips remain firmly anchored in 8 6474.031WO1the foam, even under conditions of heavy use or stress. This optional feature adds to the versatility and effectiveness of the spring-loaded clips.

[0050] Referring now to FIG. 1C, a detailed view 140 of a single spring-loaded clip 142 from the vehicle seat trim retainer assembly is presented. The spring- loaded clip 142 is composed of two rigid plastic members, specifically a first spring-loaded element 144 and a second spring-loaded element 146. These elements are connected at a common base 147 that is part of or connected to the flexible support rail 148.

[0051] The first spring-loaded element 144 and the second spring-loaded element 146 are arranged in a side-by-side scissor-like manner. This arrangement allows the elements to flex inwards towards the axis of the flexible support rail when being inserted into the foam and then spring away from the axis of the flexible support rail when exiting the backside of the foam. In other words, elements 144 and 146 have natural resting states offset relative to the axis of the flexible support rail. This resting state may be overcome by external force applied by the foam as elements 144 and 146 are squeezed together in a bent position when being inserted into the narrow foam slot. In other words, elements 144 and 146 may bend towards the axis of the flexible rail when squeezing through tight spaces like the foam slot. However, after exiting the backside of the foam slot, elements 144 and 146 spring back to their natural offset resting state. This action enables the hooks of the spring-loaded elements to span a distance larger than the slot thereby engaging with the backside of the foam, providing a secure anchor point for the seat trim.

[0052] It is worth noting that the spring-loaded elements do not incorporate an actual spring. Instead, the spring-like action is achieved through the inherent flexibility of the rigid plastic members that form the spring-loaded elements. This design simplifies the construction of the clips, reducing manufacturing costs and increasing durability.

[0053] Each of the spring-loaded elements, the first spring-loaded element 144 and the second spring-loaded element 146, features a head 144A and 146A, a hook 144B and 146B, a neck 144C and 146C, and a body 144D and 146D. The head of each element is designed for insertion into the foam vehicle seat body. 9 6474.031WO1The hook of each element is designed to engage with the backside of the foam, providing a secure anchor point for the seat trim. The neck and body of each element provide structural support and facilitate the scissor-like action of the spring-loaded clip.

[0054] The spring-loaded clip 142, composed of the first spring-loaded element 144 and the second spring-loaded element 146, is also designed to be easily disengaged from the foam vehicle seat body when desired. This is achieved in one of two manners. If first spring-loaded element 144 and the second spring- loaded element 146 are accessible, they could be squeezed together until they are no longer engaged with foam and then pulled out through the foam slot. If the elements are not accessible, the technician could rotate spring-loaded clip 142 approximately 90 degrees. This rotation action causes the hooks of the spring- loaded elements to disengage from the foam, allowing the spring-loaded clip 142 to be pulled out of the foam slot.

[0055] This feature of the spring-loaded clip 142 provides a practical advantage in the seat assembly process. It facilitates easy insertion, removal and repositioning of the seat trim, providing additional flexibility in the seat assembly process. This is particularly beneficial in scenarios where adjustments or modifications to the seat trim positioning are desired, as it eliminates the complexity and potential damage associated with removing embedded receivers from the foam vehicle seat body.

[0056] It is worth noting that the rotation action for disengaging the spring- loaded clip 142 does not compromise the structural integrity or functionality of the clip. The scissor-like arrangement of the spring-loaded elements, the first spring-loaded element 144 and the second spring-loaded element 146, allows them to maintain their spring-like action even after repeated insertions and removals. This ensures that the spring-loaded clip 142 can be reused multiple times, further enhancing the cost-effectiveness and durability of the vehicle seat trim retainer assembly.

[0057] Referring to FIG. 2A, a front view of vehicle seats 200 is depicted. The vehicle seats 200 include a seat back rest 202A, a seat head rest 202B, and a seat base 202C. These components form the primary structure of the vehicle seats 10 6474.031WO1200, providing support and comfort for the occupant. The seat back rest 202A and the seat base 202C are typically constructed from a foam material, which is molded into the desired shape to enhance comfort and ergonomics.

[0058] On the seat back rest 202A, multiple spring-loaded clip insertion locations are indicated. These insertion locations, specifically 204A, 204B, 204C, 204D, 204E, and 204F, are strategically positioned to align with contour grooves in the foam where the spring-loaded clips of the vehicle seat trim retainer assembly are to be inserted. These insertion locations are effectively designed to receive the spring-loaded clips, providing secure anchor points for the seat trim on the foam vehicle seat body.

[0059] The spring-loaded clip insertion locations can be molded into the foam at desired locations (e.g. contour grooves in the foam), providing flexibility in the positioning of the seat trim. Once the spring-loaded clips are inserted into these locations, the hooks of the clips engage with the backside of the foam, holding the seat trim in place under tension and preventing the clips from being pulled out of the foam. This design simplifies the seat trim installation process, reducing manufacturing complexity and cost while providing a secure and precise fit for the seat trim on the vehicle seat body.

[0060] Turning to FIG. 2B, another view of a foam vehicle seat body 220 is presented. The foam vehicle seat body 220 includes a seat back rest 202A, which is typically constructed from a foam material. The foam material is molded into the desired shape to enhance comfort and ergonomics. The seat back rest 202A is designed to provide support for the occupant's back, ensuring a comfortable seating experience.

[0061] On the seat back rest 202A, multiple spring-loaded clip insertion locations are clearly delineated. These insertion locations, specifically 204A, 204B, 204C, 204D, 204E, and 204F, are strategically positioned to align with the spring-loaded clips of the vehicle seat trim retainer assembly. These insertion locations are designed to receive the spring-loaded clips, providing secure anchor points for the seat trim on the foam vehicle seat body.

[0062] This design simplifies the seat trim installation process, reducing manufacturing complexity and cost while providing a secure and precise fit for 11 6474.031WO1the seat trim on the vehicle seat body. It also provides flexibility in the positioning of the seat trim, as the slots can be molded into the foam at any desired location, allowing for adjustments or modifications to the seat trim positioning without the complexity and potential damage associated with removing embedded receivers from the foam vehicle seat body.

[0063] Referring now to FIG. 2C, a top-down view of a seat trim with integrated clips 240 is presented. The seat trim includes an interior surface 244 and an exterior surface 242. The interior surface 244 is the side of the seat trim that is designed to be attached to the foam vehicle seat body. The exterior surface 242 is the side of the seat trim that is designed to be exposed to the occupant of the vehicle seat.

[0064] Integrated into the interior surface 244 of the seat trim are a series of spring-loaded clips, including 248A, 248B, 248C, 248D, 248E, 248F, 248G, 248H, and 248I. These spring-loaded clips are strategically positioned along the edges of the interior surface 244, following the contour of the seat trim. For example, the flexible rail may be sewn into the seat trim at locations corresponding to the contour of the seat trim. This strategic positioning of the spring-loaded clips allows for a secure and precise fit when the seat trim is installed on the vehicle seat body.

[0065] Each of the spring-loaded clips 248A-248I, is designed to engage with corresponding slots (not shown) in the foam vehicle seat body. When the spring- loaded clips are inserted into these slots, the hooks of the clips engage with the backside of the foam, holding the seat trim in place under tension and preventing the clips from being pulled out of the foam. This design simplifies the seat trim installation process, reducing manufacturing complexity and cost while providing a secure and precise fit for the seat trim on the vehicle seat body.

[0066] In some cases, the spring-loaded clips can be spaced at predetermined distances along the edges of the interior surface 244. This configuration allows for the precise positioning of the spring-loaded clips on the seat trim, ensuring a secure and accurate fit when the seat trim is installed on the vehicle seat body. It also provides flexibility in the positioning of the seat trim, as the slots can be molded into the foam at any desired location, allowing for adjustments or 12 6474.031WO1modifications to the seat trim positioning without the complexity and potential damage associated with removing embedded receivers from the foam vehicle seat body. Spacing of spring-loaded clips may be uniform or non-uniform along the flexible rail depending on the use.

[0067] Turning to FIG. 2D, a back view of a foam vehicle seat body 260 is presented. The foam vehicle seat body 260 features a series of aligned foam slots such as foam slot 262, foam slot 266, and foam slot 270. These slots are strategically positioned to align with the spring-loaded clips of the vehicle seat trim retainer assembly. Inserted into each of these slots are corresponding spring-loaded clips. Specifically, spring-loaded clip 264 is engaged in foam slot 262, spring-loaded clip 268 is engaged in foam slot 266, and spring-loaded clip 272 is engaged in foam slot 270. Each of these spring-loaded clips is designed to engage directly with the foam vehicle seat body. These clips are formed with two spring-loaded elements, each featuring a hook. The spring-loaded elements are arranged in a scissor-like manner, allowing them to flex towards one another when being inserted into the foam and spring away from one another when exiting the backside of the foam. This action enables the hooks of the spring- loaded elements to engage with the backside of the foam, providing a secure anchor point for the seat trim.

[0068] Once the spring-loaded clips are inserted into these slots, the hooks of the clips engage with the backside of the foam. This engagement holds the seat trim in place under tension and prevents the clips from being pulled out of the foam. This design simplifies the seat trim installation process, reducing manufacturing complexity and cost while providing a secure and precise fit for the seat trim on the vehicle seat body.

[0069] In some cases, the foam vehicle seat body 260 can be constructed, for example, molded with slots at these desired locations, or molded without slots where slots are then cut in the foam at the desired locations. This design allows for the precise positioning of the spring-loaded clips on the seat trim, ensuring a secure and accurate fit when the seat trim is installed on the vehicle seat body. It also provides flexibility in the positioning of the seat trim, as the slots can be molded into the foam at any desired location, allowing for adjustments or modifications to the seat trim positioning without the complexity and potential 13 6474.031WO1damage associated with removing embedded receivers from the foam vehicle seat body.

[0070] Referring now to FIG. 2E, a close-up view of the backside of foam 280 is presented. The foam 280 features a foam slot 282 into which a spring-loaded clip 284 is inserted. The spring-loaded clip 284 is designed to engage directly with the foam vehicle seat body. This clip is formed with two spring-loaded elements, each featuring a hook. The spring-loaded elements are arranged in a scissor-like manner, allowing them to flex towards one another when being inserted into the foam and spring away from one another when exiting the backside of the foam. This action enables the hooks of the spring-loaded elements to engage with the backside of the foam, providing a secure anchor point for the seat trim. Once the spring-loaded clip 284 is inserted into the foam slot 282, the hooks of the clip engage with the backside of the foam. This engagement holds the seat trim in place under tension and prevents the clip from being pulled out of the foam.

[0071] Turning to FIG. 3, a flowchart 300 is presented, detailing the sequential steps for preparing and installing a vehicle seat trim. The process begins with the step of molding the vehicle seat trim retainer assembly, as indicated in step 302. In this step, the vehicle seat trim retainer assembly, which includes a flexible support rail and a plurality of spring-loaded clips, is molded as a single component or as separate components that are later attached to one another (i.e., clips attached to the rail). The vehicle seat trim retainer assembly may be molded to a length that corresponds directly to an installation use case (i.e., length for a specific seat), or may be molded as a long spool that can be cut to a desired length by a technician.

[0072] Following the molding of the vehicle seat trim retainer assembly, the next step, as indicated in step 304, involves forming grooves in the seat body where the vehicle seat trim retainer assembly is desired to be engaged. These grooves can be molded into the foam at desired locations, or cut into the foam at desired locations providing flexibility in the positioning of the seat trim. In either case, once the grooves are formed, the spring-loaded clips of the vehicle seat trim retainer assembly can be inserted into these grooves, providing secure anchor points for the seat trim on the foam vehicle seat body. 14 6474.031WO1

[0073] The next step in the process, as indicated in step 306, is an optional step that involves cutting the support rail to the desired length for the vehicle seat. The flexible nature of the support rail allows it to be easily cut to the desired length, ensuring a precise fit when the seat trim is installed on the vehicle seat body. This step is not needed if the support rail is molded to the desired length in step 302. Once the support rail has been cut to the desired length, the next step, as indicated in step 308, involves attaching the support rail to the backside of the seat trim. This can be achieved through various methods, such as sewing and adhesive methods providing a secure and robust connection between the seat trim and the support rail.

[0074] The next in the process, as indicated in step 310, involves installing the seat trim on the seat body by inserting the spring-loaded clips of the seat trim retainer assembly into the grooves in the seat body. Once the spring-loaded clips are inserted into the grooves, the hooks of the clips engage with the backside of the foam, holding the seat trim in place under tension and preventing the clips from being pulled out of the foam.

[0075] In addition to the steps outlined for installing the seat trim using the vehicle seat trim retainer assembly, the installation process may include supplementary measures to ensure a secure and durable fit. One such measure could involve stapling the ends of the seat trim to the back side of the seat body. This step would provide extra reinforcement, preventing any potential slippage or movement of the seat trim over time. The staples would act as additional anchor points, complementing the mechanical coupling provided by the spring- loaded clips, and would be particularly useful in areas of the seat trim that experience higher tension or stress during use. This method would further enhance the overall integrity and longevity of the seat trim attachment to the foam vehicle seat body.

[0076] The design of the spring-loaded clips in the vehicle seat trim retainer assembly is adaptable, allowing for various configurations to meet specific requirements. While the standard configuration includes two spring-loaded elements, it is possible to have clips with more than two elements to provide additional points of engagement with the foam vehicle seat body. The bodies and hooks of these elements can also vary in shape to optimize the mechanical 15 6474.031WO1coupling with the seat body, whether it be for enhanced grip, ease of insertion, or distribution of stress. Furthermore, the materials used to manufacture the spring- loaded clips can range from different types of plastics to metal alloys, depending on the desired properties such as flexibility, strength, and durability. The choice of material may also be influenced by factors such as weight considerations, cost constraints, and the specific environmental conditions to which the vehicle seats will be exposed.

[0077] Furthermore, the grooves designed to accommodate the spring-loaded clips of the vehicle seat trim retainer assembly can be integrated into the foam vehicle seat body in various ways. They may be internal channels within the body of the foam, providing a concealed attachment point for the clips. Alternatively, the grooves can be exposed on the backside of the foam seat body, where they are readily accessible for the insertion and engagement of the clips. The choice between internal or exposed grooves can be determined by factors such as the desired aesthetic, the ease of assembly, or the structural requirements of the seat design. Both configurations serve the purpose of securely anchoring the seat trim to the foam body while allowing for flexibility in the positioning and adjustment of the trim.
