Abstract
Description
[0001] SLIDING DEVICE FOR A FURNISHING ELEMENT, CORRESPONDING PRODUCTION AND ASSEMBLY METHOD AND CARRIAGE FOR A SLIDING DEVICE
[0002] FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0003] The present invention concerns both a sliding device for a furnishing element, such as for example an extensible or extendable table, a wardrobe’s sliding door of, a piece of furniture’s drawer or shelf, a foldaway bed or other, as well as the corresponding production and assembly method. In particular, the new sliding device allows at least one mobile part of the furnishing element to be moved with respect to a fixed structure thereof with ease, so as to assume a first position, or closed position, or at least a second position, or open position.
[0004] BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0005] In the furniture sector, the need to allow a mobile part of a piece of furniture to be moved with respect to a fixed structure thereof is known, and it is known that several sliding devices have, so far, been presented to meet this need.
[0006] For example, in the case of extensible or extendable tables, there is a need for their rest plane to be able to selectively assume, in addition to a normal closed position in which it has a minimal rest surface, also at least a second position, or open, elongated or extended position, in which it has an increased rest surface.
[0007] Many known sliding devices each comprise at least a first profiled element configured to be attached to the furnishing element’s fixed structure and a second profiled element configured to be attached to a mobile part thereof in order to cooperate, during use, with the first profiled element so that the second profiled element can slide with respect to the first profiled element.
[0008] Furthermore, to facilitate the sliding between the two profiled elements it is known to use one or more carriages, each provided with one or more rotating members, such as wheels or ball bearings. In particular, a carriage is known comprising a support made of wood and shaped so as to have two housings in each of which a ball bearing, mounted on the support by means of a central attachment screw, is rotatable. Each housing is provided with an aperture from which a peripheral part of the corresponding ball bearing protrudes, so as to contact a sliding surface.
[0009] This known carriage has the disadvantage of being rather complex; it is therefore expensive to make and, in addition, requires an attachment screw for each ball bearing, therefore the method for mounting it on the profiled elements is also complicated and expensive.
[0010] There is therefore the need to provide a sliding device and perfect the corresponding production and assembly methods which can overcome at least one of the disadvantages of the state of the art.
[0011] The technical problem that the present invention aims to resolve is to provide a sliding device that is easy to produce, especially in series, and to assemble on a furnishing element, and that at the same time is robust, lasts over time and does not require any maintenance whatsoever.
[0012] The technical problem as above has been resolved by creating a new and innovative sliding device and by perfecting new and innovative production and assembly methods thereof, which will be described in detail below.
[0013] One purpose of the present invention is therefore to provide a sliding device that is compact, easy to produce, even in batch production, and to assemble on a furnishing element, for example, but not only, an extensible table, a wardrobe’s sliding door, a furnishing element’s drawer or shelf, or a foldaway bed, even by not particularly skilled personnel.
[0014] Another purpose of the present invention is to provide a sliding device that consists of a limited number of components, most of which are the same as each other, thus reducing production costs.
[0015] Another purpose of the present invention is to perfect both a method for producing a sliding device and also a method for assembling and installing it on a furnishing element, which are simple and allow to reduce production costs.
[0016] The Applicant has devised, tested and embodied the present invention to overcome the shortcomings of the state of the art and to obtain these and other purposes and advantages.

[0047] DESCRIPTION OF AN EMBODIMENT
[0048] With reference to the attached drawings, a sliding device 10 according to the present invention, which will be described in detail below, is configured to be assembled on a furnishing element 100 (figs. 1 and 2), which in the example given here is an extensible table comprising a fixed structure 101, provided with four legs 102 each having an upper terminal part 103 (fig. 4). The furnishing element 100 also comprises at least one mobile part 105, of which there are two in the example given here (figs. 1 and 2), disposed opposing each other, each of which, thanks to the presence of the sliding device 10, is sliding with respect to the fixed structure 101 so as to selectively assume a first closed position, shown in fig. 1, in which a rest plane 106 of the extensible table has a minimal rest surface, or at least a second open position, shown in fig. 2, in which the rest plane 106 has an increased rest surface, due to the presence of two extensions 107 which can be selectively positioned on the opposing sides of the fixed part of the rest plane 106, as is known to the people of skill in the field.
[0049] The sliding device 10 (fig. 3) comprises both two first profiled elements 11, each configured to be attached to two of the upper terminal parts 103 (fig. 4), and also two pairs of second profiled elements 12, each configured to be attached to a corresponding mobile part 105. Furthermore, the two second profiled elements 12 of each pair are configured to be attached to each other by means of a crossbar 14 (figs. 3, 4, 7 and 8).
[0050] Each first profiled element 11 is provided with a first longitudinal groove 13 in which a first carriage 15 is attached (figs. 5, 6 and 7), and each second profiled element 12 is provided with a second longitudinal groove 16 in which a second carriage 17 is attached (figs. 5, 6 and 8).
[0051] The two longitudinal grooves 13 and 16 (figs. 3, 4, 7 and 8) are substantially T- shaped, each comprise two horizontal sliding surfaces 18 opposing each other (figs. 7 and 8), and extend for the entire length of the corresponding profiled element 11 and 12, whereby they are made through from one end to the other of the latter.
[0052] The profiled elements 11 and 12 can be made of wood, metal, for example aluminum, or rigid plastic material, but are preferably made of wood, for example beech and, advantageously, they all have the same cross section, including the two longitudinal grooves 13 and 16. In addition, advantageously, the profiled elements 11 and 12 can be created from a single, much longer, profiled element which is then cut to size.
[0053] The two carriages 15 and 17 (figs. 5 and 6) are the same as each other and each of them comprises a block 19 of rigid plastic material, for example made by molding, having substantially the shape of a rectangular parallelepiped, ideally divided into two parts, an upper and a lower one, by a median longitudinal plane P.
[0054] The block 19 comprises a front surface 20 perpendicular to the median longitudinal plane P, two external longitudinal surfaces, an upper 21 and a lower 22 one, parallel to the median longitudinal plane P, and two intermediate longitudinal surfaces, an upper 23 and a lower 25 one, parallel to the external longitudinal surfaces 21 and 22 and closer than the latter to the median longitudinal plane P. In this way, the block 19 is provided with an upper shoulder 26 and a lower shoulder 27 (fig. 5).
[0055] From the front surface 20 there protrude in a single body two substantially cylindrical pegs 29, on each of which a ball bearing 30 having an external diameter D is coaxially attached. In particular, advantageously each ball bearing 30 is pressure-driven into the corresponding peg 29 without the aid of any attachment mean, such as screws or other.
[0056] The axes Y1 and Y2 (figs. 5 and 6) of the two pegs 29 are positioned on opposite sides and at a same distance H from the median longitudinal plane P. Furthermore, the axis Y1 is equidistant from the upper external longitudinal surface 21 and from a left lateral edge 31 of the block 19, and the axis Y2 is equidistant from the lower external longitudinal surface 22 and from a right lateral edge 32 of the block 19.
[0057] The block 19 is also provided with a single central through hole 33, whose axis Y3 lies on the median longitudinal plane P and is equidistant from the lateral edges 31 and 32. A self-tapping screw 35 (figs. 7 and 8) can be inserted into the central hole 33 to attach a carriage 15 or 17 in the corresponding profiled element 11 or 12, respectively.
[0058] In addition, the block 19, in the part opposite the one where the pegs 29 are present, is provided with lightening recesses 36 (fig. 6), created for example during the molding of the block 19.
[0059] Some embodiments of the present invention provide that the external diameter D of each of the ball bearings 30 is such that, when the latter are mounted in the pegs 29, their peripheral sliding surfaces are positioned, on opposite sides, substantially aligned with the upper 21 and lower 22 external longitudinal surfaces, or more internal than the latter by a few tenths of a millimeter, in order to contact, during use, a corresponding one of the sliding internal surfaces 18 of the longitudinal grooves 13, 16.
[0060] To facilitate the pressure-attachment of the ball bearings 30 in the corresponding pegs 29, each of the latter is provided on its cylindrical surface with rough elements 37, preferably comprising or consisting of small annular teeth, configured to facilitate the pressure-attachment of the ball bearings 30 in the pegs 29.
[0061] We must clarify that the ball bearings of the first carriage 15 are sized and configured to be inserted slidingly in the second longitudinal groove 16, while the ball bearings 30 of the second carriage are configured to be inserted slidingly in the first longitudinal groove 13, as will be described in detail below.
[0062] Some embodiments provide that at least the two first profiled elements 11 have a substantially rectangular cross section and are each provided, in correspondence with each of their ends and for a certain length L (fig. 3), for example of about 20 cm, with a lowered upper surface 39, for example lowered by between about 0.5 mm and about 2 mm, the purpose of which is to prevent jamming and facilitate the movement of the corresponding mobile part 105 with respect to the fixed structure 101, especially when the mobile part 105 is moved from the second, open position to the first, closed position.
[0063] The method for producing the sliding device 10 described heretofore is as follows.
[0064] In a first production step, all the carriages 15 and 17 required by the furnishing element 100 are produced, which in the example given here are eight (fig. 3) and which, as mentioned above, are all the same as each other. In particular, first the blocks 19 are made, preferably in series, with rigid plastic material, for example by molding, and then the ball bearings 30 are driven onto the pegs, using only pressure.
[0065] In a second production step, which can be carried out before, simultaneously with, or after the first production step, the profiled elements 11 and 12 are produced, for example creating them from a single, much longer, profiled element and then cutting them to size. In the example given here, the four second profiled elements 12 are the same as each other and have a length that is substantially equal to, or smaller than, that of the two first profiled elements 11 , which have the same length.
[0066] From this it is clear that the production of the sliding device 10 is advantageously very simple and inexpensive, so that the overall production costs are also lower compared to those of the sliding devices of the state of the art.
[0067] The method for assembling the sliding device 10 is as follows.
[0068] In a first assembly step, the two first profiled elements 11 are each attached, on opposite sides and in mirroring positions, to two upper terminal parts 103 (fig. 4). Then four first carriages 15 (fig. 3) are attached, by means of the self-tapping screws 35, in the corresponding first longitudinal grooves 13, close to the ends of the two first profiled elements 11 , with the corresponding ball bearings 30 disposed outside the latter.
[0069] In a second assembly step, four second carriages 17 are each attached, by means of the self-tapping screws 35, in a longitudinal groove 16 of a corresponding second profiled element 11, with the corresponding ball bearings 30 disposed outside the latter.
[0070] In a third assembly step, the second profiled elements 12 are coupled slidingly to the first profiled elements 11 by inserting the ball bearings 30 of the first carriages 15 in the second longitudinal grooves 16 of the second profiled elements 12, and the ball bearings 30 of the second carriages 17 in the first longitudinal grooves 13 of the first profiled elements 11.
[0071] Finally, in a fourth assembly step, which can precede or follow the third assembly step, the two profiled elements 12 of each pair are connected to each other by means of the crossbar 14, and each pair of second profiled elements 12 is attached to the corresponding mobile part 105 of the furnishing element 100.
[0072] From this it is clear that the assembly of the sliding device 10 is advantageously very simple and inexpensive, also thanks to the fact that only one self-tapping screw 35 is required for each carriage 15, 17, since the ball bearings 30 are pressure-driven on the pegs 29, so that the corresponding costs of assembly and installation on the furnishing element 100 are also lower compared to those of the state of the art.
[0073] It is clear that modifications and / or additions of parts or steps may be made to the sliding device 10 and to the methods as described heretofore, without thereby departing from the field and scope of the present invention, as defined by the claims.
[0074] It is also clear that, although the present invention has been described with reference an example of one embodiment, a person of skill in the art will be able to achieve other equivalent forms of sliding devices as well as methods for producing them and assembling them onto a furnishing element, having the characteristics as set forth in the claims and hence all coming within the field of protection defined thereby. In the following claims, the sole purpose of the references in brackets is to facilitate their reading and they must not be considered as restrictive factors with regard to the field of protection defined by the claims.
