[0037] The study item (SI) study on artificial intelligence (AI)  / machine learning (ML) for new radio (NR) air interface explores benefits of augmenting the air-interface with features enabling improved support of AI / ML. The central objective of this project is to study 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) framework for AI / ML for air-interface corresponding to each target use case regarding aspects such as performance, complexity, and potential specification impact.

[0038] 3GPP draft RP-234039 work item description (WID) specifies the following WID on AI / ML based beam management: Beam management (BM) : downlink (DL) transmit (Tx) beam prediction for both UE-sided model and network (NW) -sided model, encompassing: 1. Spatial-domain DL Tx beam prediction for Set A of beams based on measurement results of Set B of beams ( “BM-Case1” ) . 2. Temporal DL Tx beam prediction for Set A of beams based on the historic measurement results of Set B of beams ( “BM-Case2” ) . 3. Specify necessary signaling / mechanism (s) to facilitate life cycle management (LCM) operations specific to the beam management use cases, if any. 4. Enabling method (s) to ensure consistency between training and inference regarding NW-side additional conditions (if identified) for inference at the UE. NOTE: Strive for common framework design to support both BM-Case1 and BM-Case2.

[0039] NR Beam Management:

[0040] In NR, reference signals for beam paring are sequentially transmitted. It is initialed by a base station such as a gNB by sending a group of synchronization signal blocks (SSBs) in order to enable a UE to measure beam qualities. The UE measures the beam qualities of all the BS transmit beams in terms of their reference  signal received powers (RSRPs) through one of the receive beams. Consequently, several other SSB groups are transmitted periodically, and the UE measures the RSRPs through other receive beams.

[0041] The beam management is briefly described by P1 / P2 / P3 in the downlink (DL) , which are a set of processes that are designed for beam management while in connected state. In short, P1 / P2 / P3 is all related to downlink beam management, i.e., it is a mechanism for the UE to better receive the downlink beam (data) . A similar mechanism for uplink beam management is not strictly formalized in 3GPP specification. The functionalities of processes P1, P2, P3 illustrated in Table 1 can be summarized as follows.

[0042] Table 1: Functionalities of Processes P1, P2, and P3:

[0043] More formal definition of these processes is stated in 3GPP Specification, Technical Report (TR) 38.802-6.1.6.1. P1 / P2 / P3 are introduced as follows.

[0044] P1: Process P1 is used to enable a UE measurement on different TRP Tx beams to support selection of TRP Tx beams / UE Rx beam (s) . For beamforming at TRP, it typically includes an intra / inter-TRP Tx beam sweep from a set of different beams. For beamforming at the UE, it typically includes a UE Rx beam sweep from a set of different beams.

[0045] P2: Process P2 is used to enable a UE measurement on different TRP Tx beams to possibly change inter / intra-TRP Tx beam (s) . From a possibly smaller set of beams for beam refinement than in the process P1. Note that the process P2 can be a special case of the process P1.

[0046] P3: Process P3 is used to enable a UE measurement on the same TRP Tx beam to change a UE Rx beam in the case the UE uses beamforming.

[0047] In NR, a synchronization signal block (SSB) is associated with different beams and a UE selects a certain beam and sends a physical random access channel (PRACH) transmission using the selected beam. In order for a network (NW) to figure out which beam the UE has selected, 3GPP defines a specific mapping between the SSB and RACH Occasion (RO) . By detecting which RO the UE sends PRACH to, the NW can figure out which SSB beam that the UE has selected.

[0048] AI / ML Beam Prediction (BP) (or called AI / ML-empowered BP) :

[0049] 3GPP Specification, TR 38.843 suggests the following considerations on measurements for model input: 1) : Only layer 1 reference signal received power (L1-RSRP) measurement based on Set B; 2) : L1-RSRP measurement based on Set B and assistance information; 3) : Carrier to Interference Ratio (CIR) based on Set B; 4) : L1-RSRP measurement based on Set B and the corresponding DL Tx and / or Rx beam ID. In addition, beam identifier (ID) information may be also provided as input to an AI / ML model. The measurements can be collected from single or multiple reference signals.

[0050] 3GPP Specification, TR 38.843 suggests the following aspects on model output for predicting the Set A of beams: 1. Probability of each beam in Set A to be the Top-1 beam and the predicted L1-RSRPs; 2. Top-1 / Top-N beam (s) among Set A of beams can be predicted and / or potentially with predicted L1-RSRPs.

[0051] 3GPP Specification, TR 38.843 assumes the following aspects on the timing of measurement and report: 1. T1 is a time duration to obtain the measurements of all the reference signal (RS) resource from Set B of beams; 2. T2 is a time duration for the best beam selection; 3. At least for temporal downlink beam prediction: Periodicity of time instance for each measurement / report in T1 is 20 ms, 40 ms, 80 ms, 100 ms, 160 ms, or 960 ms. Other values can be reported. Number of time instances for measurement / report in T1 can be reported. Time instance (s) for prediction can be reported.

[0052] Basically, WID concludes two kinds of BP cases, one is for spatial-domain BP and the other is for temporal. In both cases, the predicted beams are applied in the future, and the main differences of the two are as follows. The spatial-domain BP focuses on the prediction of the beam used in a near future, e.g., next slot, and the Set A and Set B could be different set of beams. The temporal BP focuses on the prediction of several beams used in a future time duration, and the Set A and Set B can be the same set of beams.

[0053] In NR, two kinds of RSs may participate in the BM procedure. In process P1, the SSBs are sent with a set of parent beams to perform a coarse beam paring. In processes P2 and P3, channel state information-reference signals (CSI-RSs) for BM are used to refine a beam paring with a set of child beams. In this way, a UE knows beam qualities of all possible transmit-receive beam pairs. SSBs corresponded to parent beams are utilized in a first stage to determine a steering direction of the best parent beam, then in a second stage, the CSI-RSs corresponded to the child beams within a coverage of the best parent beam are utilized to determine the best child beam. This approach alleviates overhead and power consumption of measurement, however it still suffers from increased latency for beam paring refinement.

[0054] Spatial-domain prediction:

[0055] Type I (NR Release R19 WID) : AI / ML methods propose the use of ML for beam prediction and selection to reduce the beam measurement overhead.

[0056] Case 1: The basic ideas are to exploits the spatial correlation among the parent beam and the child beam qualities, to predict the optimal child beam based on the measurements from the parent beams. In additional, a UE location information, if feasible, can also serves as assistant information for beam prediction.

[0057] Case 2: Another approach is transmitting a subset of child beams and then utilizes AI / ML model to predict the optimal beams by learning the spatial correlation among child beams, where the optimal beams are not necessarily belongs to the transmitted subset. For example, based on the RSRP through a subset of the  transmit beams, an AI / ML model is trained to predict the RSRPs of the non-transmitted beams, then the beam with the beast measurement or predicted resulting in reduced overhead.

[0058] Temporal prediction: The temporal prediction exploits the temporal relevance between channel and spatial parameters conveyed from one antenna port in different time instances. If two RSs send from on antenna ports are temporally apart from each other, due to the time varying environment the channel properties obtained from the former time instance may expire at the latter one. This typically occurs when a device is moving at high speeds, so the geometry of the physical channel changes rapidly. However, equipped by the AI / ML model, the network may be able to capture the dynamic of the time varying channel and infer the channel properties at the latter time instance from the former one.

[0059] In the above, there are some issues as follows.

[0060] Overall Issue: The Set A and Set B defined in the WID for BP may need a clear mapping to physical layer signals, while the relationship between AI / ML-empowered BP and conventional BM needs to be clarified to design a policy of selecting Set B to infer Set A. To this end, flexible and efficient configurations of measurements and reports for AI / ML-empowered BP can be addressed.

[0061] Issue 1: An inference output of Set A of beams provides a reference on a choice of DL beams at the NW side. The current TR provides a list of candidate report values which only allows the NW to choose the beam from the predefined Set A of beams. The post processing on the prediction results, e.g., the beam synthesis at the NW or UE side may help increase the beam resolution.

[0062] Issue 2: The current beam management framework based on a three-stage processing as process P1 / P2 / P3, however if it would be entirely or partially by the AI / ML-empowered BP is still an open issue in current agreement. Some embodiments of the present disclosure need to identify the role of AI / ML-empowered BP in each stage, and consequently provide the unique features on corresponding measurement and configuration behaviors.

[0063] Issue 3: As AI / ML-empowered BP greatly reduces the beam sweeping overhead for both NW and UE. However, it suffers from the ‘uplink (UL) uncertainty’ problem, which means the UE may not know the optimal beam to send UL message if omitting the beam paring procedure based on exhausted search. Therefore, an effective design targeting to reduce the ‘UL uncertainty’ needs to be proposed.

[0064] Some embodiments of the present disclosure identify the above three issues in deploying AI / ML-empowered beam prediction into current protocols, including how to refine measurements and reports, and how to define scenario-based configurations when AI / ML is enabled. In consequence, some embodiments provide comprehensive solutions on the three issues, and illustrates the solutions into some embodiments. Some embodiments address the role of AI / ML-empowered beam prediction (BP) in various stages of the beam management, and consequently identify the unique features when incorporating the AI / ML into the beam management (BM) . Some embodiments provide a design with flexibilities on configurations of the measurement of AI / ML-empowered BP, and propose a post processing on the prediction results assisted by the additional information which helps increase the beam resolution.

[0084] FIG. 9 is an example of a method 900 of artificial intelligence (AI)  / machine learning (ML) based beam management performed by a base station according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The method 900 of artificial intelligence (AI)  / machine learning (ML) based beam management performed by the base station is configured to implement some embodiments of the disclosure. Some embodiments of the disclosure may be implemented into the method 900 of artificial intelligence (AI)  / machine learning (ML) based beam management performed by the base station using any suitably configured hardware and / or software. In some embodiments, the method 900 of artificial intelligence (AI)  / machine learning (ML) based beam management performed by the base station includes: an operation 902, performing a beam selection, wherein performing the beam selection comprises sweeping transmission and reception point (TPR) beams and receiving, from a user equipment (UE) , a best TRP beam of the TPR beams, an operation 904, performing a beam refinement for transmitter, wherein performing the beam refinement for transmitter comprises refining beams and receiving, from the UE, a best beam of refined beams; and performing a beam refinement for receiver, wherein performing the beam refinement for receiver comprises fixing a beam, wherein performing the beam selection, performing the beam refinement for transmitter, or performing the beam refinement for receiver is based on an AI / ML predicted beam. This can solve issues in the prior art and other issues, and provide AI / ML based beam management.

[0085] In some embodiments, the signal pattern may mean that a signal pattern indicates multiple reference signal resource indexes (RSRIs) , such that “each bit of the signal pattern” may correspond to one RSRI. The signal pattern associated with multiple transmit beam may mean that multiple reference signals are sent on multiple reference signal (RS) resources configured in the signal pattern, and each reference signal uses a beam. In addition, the signal pattern in the form of bitmap may be an indication method of RSRI, and may be limited to the case where the RS is an SSB. The target beam may refer to a qualified beam screened from candidate beams based on a target evaluation parameter of a serving cell. The target beam may further refer to a beam that the switching ends at. Switching may refer to one-way single transfer between two beams. Pre-determined beam may refer to the beam is pre-determinded. “Pre-determinded” can refer to “pre-configured” , “network  configured” , “preset” , “pre-defined” , or “pre-defined rules” . “Preset” , “pre-defined” , or “pre-defined rules” may be achieved by pre-storing corresponding codes, tables, or other manners for indicating relevant information in devices (e.g., including a UE and a network device) . The specific implementation is not limited in the present disclosure. For example, “preset” and “pre-defined” may refer to those defined in a protocol. It is also to be understood that in the disclosure, “protocol” may refer to a standard protocol in the field of communication, which may include, for example, an LTE protocol, NR protocol and relevant protocol applied in the future communication system, which is not limited in the present disclosure. The beam management may refer to a series of operation processes of obtaining and managing downlink and uplink transmission and reception of a user by a base station and a user side, and comprises beam selection, beam measurement, beam reporting, beam scanning and the like. Beam management is based on a series of reference signals on which the base station or user uses different transmit or receive beams to effect scanning of the beams. The user or the base station performs measurement based on the scanned beam, further performs a beam selection process, and feeds back the selected result. In details, beam management may refer to a set of layer 1 / layer 2 (L1 / L2) procedures to acquire and maintain a set of transmission / reception point (s) (TRP) and / or UE beams that can be used for DL and UL transmission / reception. Beam management includes various operations or procedures, such as beam determination, beam management, beam reporting, and beam sweeping operations / procedures. Beam determination refers to TRP (s) or UE ability to select of its own transmission / reception (Tx / Rx) beam (s) . Beam measurement refers to TRP or UE ability to measure characteristics of received beamformed signals. Beam reporting refers the UE ability to report information of beamformed signal (s) based on beam measurement. Beam sweeping refers to operation (s) of covering a spatial area, with beams transmitted and / or received during a time interval in a predetermined manner. In some embodiments, SET A of beams and SET B of beams can be pre-configured transmit beam set and pre-configured receive beam set respectively. The target beam may the optimal beam expected, and the beam prediction can directly correspond to the optimal beam. It can also be the relationship (synthesis) between the target beam and pre-determined beams, and in this case, the beams may need to be pre-configured on the UE side and the base station side respectively, such that the other side can obtain the target beam by the weights of these known beams during signaling.

[0086] Exemplary Technical Solutions:

[0087] Enlighted by the prior arts and enabled by the AI / ML techniques, it is straightforward that some embodiments of the present disclosure may incorporate the AI / ML-empowered BP into the conventional BM procedures. There are multiple levels of AI / ML-empowered BP listed as follows.

[0088] Referring to FIG. 1, in some embodiments, the UE 10 is condfigured to receive a signal pattern from the base station 20, wherein the signal pattern is associated with multiple transmit beams of the base station 20, the UE 10 is condfigured to determine a beam prediction based on the signal pattern and an AI model of the UE 10, and the UE 10 is condfigured to report the beam prediction to the base station 20, wherein the beam prediction is configured to indicate a relation between a target beam and a plurality of pre-determined beams, wherein the plurality of the pre-determined beams are pre-determined at both the UE 10 and the base station 20. In some embodiments, the UE 10 is further configured to report, to the base station 20, a report quantity, selected from  one or more of: a best beam indexing from a beam set, a plurality of first optimal beams and probabilities of the plurality of first optimal beams to be a best beam, and a plurality of second optimal beams with largest predicted reference signal received powers (RSRP) . In some embodiments, the UE 10 is further configured to receive a report configuration from the base station 20, wherein the report configuration is configured to indicate a type of the report quantity.

[0089] Some of the above-mentioned embodiments include an example method 1 and an example method 2. In the example method 1, the base station 20 notifies the UE 10 in advance of the beam corresponding to each bit of the pattern, such that the UE 10 can obtain the corresponding information. In this case, the UE AI model uses the beam information and the corresponding RSRP as input to obtain the beam prediction. The signal pattern can correspond to beam information, such that the corresponding beam information and RSRP can be used as input to the UE side AI model to directly obtain the predicted optimal beam. Assuming that there is a beam ID that is known (common or pre-determined) to both the UE and the base station, the UE may directly report the beam ID and corresponding RSRP.

[0090] In the example method 2, the base station 20 does not notify the UE 10 in advance of the beam corresponding to each bit of the pattern. In this case, the UE AI model uses the bits of the pattern and the corresponding RSRP as input to obtain a prediction (bit) . After the prediction is reported to the base station 20, the base station 20 can obtain the beam prediction based on this information. There may be no direct correspondence with the beam in the signal pattern, such that the bit information and RSRP can only be used as input to the UE-side AI model to obtain the optimal value of each bit prediction. This prediction is transmitted to the base station such as gNB and analyzed by gNB to obtain the optimal beam. Assuming that there is no beam ID known to both the UE and the gNB, but gNB knows which beam is used at a specific position (recorded as RSRI) of the reference signal pattern (may be called as reference signal resource index, RSRI) , then the UE reports the RSRI and the corresponding RSRP, and gNB can determine the specific beam based on the reported RSRI (gNB, as the sender using the beam, naturally knows the corresponding relationship) .

[0091] In both the example method 1 and the example method 2, it can be considered that signal pattern is associated with multiple transmit beam. In some embodiments, the signal pattern may mean that a signal pattern indicates multiple reference signal resource indexes (RSRIs) , such that “each bit of the signal pattern” may correspond to one RSRI.

[0092] Solution 1: Some embodiments provide report quantities for beam prediction and the corresponding post processing methods. The reported beam can be synthesised based on linearly weighted sum (LWS) of predicted beams such as exactly the synthesised beam or indication of the weights and beam IDs. The beam and the corresponding IDs are commonly known by both NW and UE. The beam IDs are associated with Set A, or Set B, or other commonly known Set of beams. The weights could be determined or calculated independently  or jointly by the follows. 1. Measurements or post-processed measurements. 2. The quantities derived from the model output. 3. Indicated by the NW.

[0093] Solution 2: Some embodiments identify different levels that AI / ML-empowered BP participates in the BM procedure, and consequently provide the unique features of corresponding configuration.

[0094] Level-0: Process P1 / P2 / P3 (AI) as illustrated in Table 2:

[0095] Table 2: Process P1 / P2 / P3 (AI) of Level-0:

[0096] 1In level-0, the BP is utilized to alleviate beam sweeping overhead in selecting UE Rx beams. If UE-side model is utilized, then it is totally a UE side implementation. It is trivial to consider the NW-side model that introduces extra signaling overhead.

[0097] Level-1: P1 (AI)  / P2 / P3 as illustrated in Table 3:

[0098] Table 3: Process P1 (AI)  / P2 / P3 of Level-1:

[0099] In level-1, the BP is utilized to alleviate beam sweeping overhead in selecting gNB Tx beams in P1. Specifically, it utilizes a subset of SSB beams to predict the optimal parent beam (s) , instead exhausted search over all SSB beams. In consequence, the necessary configurations and reports relating to AI / ML-empowered BP functionality should be signaled between the gNB and UE.

[0100] Level-2: P1 / P2 (AI)  / P3 (AI) or P1 / P2 (AI)  / P3 as respectively illustrated in Table 4 and Table 5:

[0101] Table 4: Process P1 / P2 (AI)  / P3 (AI) of Level-2:

[0102] Table 5: Process P1 / P2 (AI)  / P3 of Level-2:

[0103] In level-2, the BP is utilized to alleviate beam sweeping overhead in selecting gNB Tx beams in P2. Specifically, it utilizes a subset of CSI-RS beams to predict the optimal child beam (s) , instead of exhausted search over all CSI-RS beams. In consequence, the necessary configurations and reports relating to AI / ML-empowered BP functionality should be signaled between the gNB and UE. However, similar to level-0, whether enabling AI in P3 could be totally a UE side implementation thus no standard impact.

[0104] Level-3: Cross phase AI BP as illustrated in Table 6:

[0105] Table 6: Cross phase AI BP of Level-3:

[0106] In level-3, the BP is utilized to alleviate beam sweeping overhead in selecting gNB Tx beams in P1 and P2. Specifically, it utilizes a subset or all the SSB beams to predict the optimal beam (s) selecting from the CSI-RS beams, instead a two-stages exhausted search over all beams in P1 and P2. In consequence, the necessary configurations and reports relating to AI / ML-empowered BP functionality should be signaled between the gNB and UE. However, similar to level-0, the AI in P3 could be totally a UE side implementation thus no standard impact.

[0107] In the solution 2, referring to FIG. 1, in some embodiments, the UE is configured to perform a beam selection, wherein performing the beam selection comprises sweeping beams, selecting one beam from the beams swept by the UE 10, and report the one beam selected by the UE 10 to the base station 20, the UE is configured to perform a beam refinement for transmitter, wherein performing the beam refinement for transmitter comprises detecting one beam from beams refined by the base station 20 and reporting the one beam detected by the UE 10 to the base station 20, and performing a beam refinement for receiver, wherein performing the beam refinement for receiver comprises refining a receiver beam, wherein performing the beam selection, performing the beam refinement for transmitter, or performing the beam refinement for receiver is based on an AI / ML predicted beam.

[0108] In the solution 2, referring to FIG. 1, in some embodiments, performing the beam refinement for receiver based on the AI / ML predicted beam comprises refining the receiver beam by the AI / ML predicted beam. In some embodiments, performing the beam selection based on the AI / ML predicted beam comprises sweeping the beams, obtaining measurements and predicted results, reporting the measurements and / or the predicted results to the base station 20, selecting the one beam from the beams swept by the UE 10 based on the measurements or the predicted results, and reporting the one or more beams selected by the UE 10 to the base station 20. In some embodiments, obtaining the measurements or the predicted results comprises utilizing a subset of synchronization signal block (SSB) beams to predict at least one optimal beam selecting from the SSB beams. In some embodiments, performing the beam refinement for transmitter based on the AI / ML predicted beam comprises detecting the one beam from the beams refined by the base station 20 and reporting the one beam detected by the UE 10 to the base station 20, wherein the beams refined by the base station 20 are based on measurements and predicted results from the UE 10. In some embodiments, performing the beam refinement for receiver based on the AI / ML predicted beam comprises refining the receiver beam by the AI / ML predicted beam. In some embodiments, the measurements or the predicted results are obtained by the UE 10 by utilizing a subset of channel state information-reference signal (CSI-RS) beams to predict at least one optimal beam selecting from the CSI-RS beams. In some embodiments, the measurements or the predicted results are obtained by the UE 10 by utilizing a subset of SSB beams or all of the SSB beams to predict at least one optimal beam selecting from CSI-RS beams.

[0109] Solution 3: Flexibilities on configurations of the measurements and reports, and potential issues brought by AI / ML-empowered BPs can be addressed.

[0110] The measurements may be collected from different RSs when a UE is different scenarios, especially the behaviour and procedure for radio resource control (RRC) _idle / inactive UE to implement the AI BP using SSB. The UL uncertainty can be addressed by enhanced power ramping and additional signalling of beam searching in the initial phase.

[0111] Embodiment 1: Report Quantities Configurations Using SSB:

[0112] In some embodiments, referring to FIG. 10, the UE 10 is configured to receive the signal pattern from the base station 20, wherein the signal pattern comprises an AI / ML-specific synchronization signal block (SSB) pattern, and the AI / ML-specific SSB pattern is carried in a system information (SI) , the UE 10 is configured to receive the report configuration from the base station 20, wherein the report configuration comprises a configuration of an AI / ML beam prediction, the UE 10 is configured to transmit, to the base station 20, a physical random access channel (PRACH) associated with an optimal measured SSB beam through a message 1 (Msg1) , the UE 10 is configured to receive a random access response (RAR) message from the base station, and the UE 10 is configured to report, to the base station 20, the beam prediction through a message 3 (Msg3) . This can solve issues in the prior art and other issues, and provide AI / ML based beam management.

[0113] In some embodiments, the configuration of the AI / ML beam prediction is carried in a system information block (SIB) . In some embodiments, the SIB comprises a SIB4, or a SIB11, or a SIBX.

[0114] In details, FIG. 10 illustrates that, in some embodiments, new quantities contain in reports when the UE 10 is in RRC_idle state or RRC_inactive state, thus a RRC signaling is basically unavailable. Hence the configuration of report quantities for AI / ML-empowered BP can be delivered in a system information (SI) , e.g., added as a field in SIB4 or SIB11 information element (IE) , or defining a new SIBX. FIG. 10 illustrates that, in some embodiments, the wireless communication method of artificial intelligence (AI)  / machine learning (ML) based beam management includes the following steps.

[0115] Step-1: the base station 20 such as gNB sends an AI-specific SSB pattern (defined in embodiment 5) , can be carried by SIB1 or other SI upon request. If carried by other SI, gNB may notify UE to performance AI-purposed measurement based on SSB using 1-bit indication in master information block (MIB) or SIB.

[0116] Step-2: gNB sends configurations for AI / ML-empowered BP.

[0117] UE infers the optimal BP based on AI in the following steps.

[0118] Step-3: UE sends PRACH relating to the optimal measured SSB beam.

[0119] Step-4: gNB sends RAR message.

[0120] Step-5: UE sends Msg3 including the beam prediction reports in details. Note: gNB obtains the optimal predicted beam based on the reports.

[0121] Information element (IE) based on embodiment 1:

[0122] Note: In this design, the ssbMeasPattern-AI is specially defined to fulfil the requirements of AI-purposed measurement. In case of multiply transmitted SSBs in different sub-bands, the mapping between the SSB time index and the RO should be based on an anchor SSB. For example, the anchor SSB can be the first one in the sets of the configured SSB, or the legacy SSB configured in SIB1. The beamMeasType filed specifies the choice of different kind of report quantities that directly output from the model.

[0123] Different kind of report quantities: 1. The best beam indexing from a commonly known set. 2. The N beams and their probability to be the top-1 beam. 3. The N beams with the largest predicted RSRP. 4. The ‘ground truth’ beam. 5. The ‘ground truth’ beams with their probabilities. 6. The ‘ground truth’ beams with the largest predicted RSRP.

[0124] Furthermore, the report quantities in beamMeasType filed can also be the post-processed model output, for example, the weighted sum of the N beams from commonly known beam sets, e.g., Set A and / or Set B of beams. In consequence, the above report types can be coded to reduce the overhead, such as using the indexing approach. Table of beamMeasType Index is illustrated in Table 7.

[0125] Table 7: Table of beamMeasType Index:

[0126] Embodiments 2: Report Quantities Configurations Using SSB:

[0127] In some embodiments, referring to FIG. 11, the UE 10 is configured to receive the signal pattern from the base station 20, wherein the signal pattern comprises an AI / ML-specific synchronization signal block (SSB) pattern, and the AI / ML-specific SSB pattern is carried in a system information (SI) , the UE 10 is configured to receive the report configuration from the base station 20, wherein the report configuration comprises a configuration of an AI / ML beam prediction, and the UE 10 is configured to transmit, to the base station 20, a PRACH associated with SSB beam identifiers (IDs) and / or SSB beam weights through a Msg1. This can solve issues in the prior art and other issues, and provide AI / ML based beam management.

[0128] In details, FIG. 11 illustrates that, in some embodiments, new quantities contain in the reports when UE is in RRC_idle or RRC_inactive, thus the RRC signalling is basically unavailable. Hence the configuration of report quantities for AI / ML-empowered BP should be delivered in the system information (SI) , e.g., added as  a field in SIB4 or SIB11 IE, or defining a new SIBX. FIG. 11 illustrates that, in some embodiments, the wireless communication method of artificial intelligence (AI)  / machine learning (ML) based beam management includes the following steps.

[0129] Step-1: The base station 20 such gNB sends the AI-specific SSB pattern (defined in embodiment 5) .

[0130] Step-2: gNB sends configurations for AI / ML-empowered BP.

[0131] UE infers the optimal BP based on AI in the following steps.

[0132] Step-3: UE sends PRACH to implicitly indicate the SSB beam IDs and / or the weights. ( ‘and’ if weight is calculated by the UE, ‘or’ if the weight is indicated by the gNB) . Multiple PRACHs are in multiple RACH occasion. The preambles are differently generated from the quantized weight factors.

[0133] Alternation in case of two-step RACH: Step-3: UE sends Msg1 to explicitly indicate the SSB beam IDs and / or the weights. In two-step RACH, Msg1 include the RACH preamble and the data payload, then the BP report can be carried by the payload. Note: gNB obtains the optimal predicted beam based on the reports.

[0134] Embodiments 3: Report Measurements Configurations Using SSB:

[0135] In some embodiments, the UE 10 is configured to receive the signal pattern from the base station 20, wherein the signal pattern comprises an AI / ML-specific synchronization signal block (SSB) pattern, and the AI / ML-specific SSB pattern is carried in a system information (SI) , the UE 10 is configured to receive the report configuration from the base station 20, wherein the report configuration comprises a configuration of an AI / ML beam prediction, and the UE 10 is configured to transmit, to the base station 20, a Msg1 associated with SSB beam identifiers (IDs) and / or SSB beam weights. This can solve issues in the prior art and other issues, and provide AI / ML based beam management.

[0136] In some embodiments, the Msg1 comprises a RACH preamble and a data payload, and the beam prediction is carried by the data payload. In some embodiments, a configuration of the AI / ML-specific SSB pattern comprises one or more of a channel bandwidth (BW) , an SSB periodicity, an SSB bitmap, and an SSB position in frequency domain. In some embodiments, the SSB periodicity is flexibly configured for different purposes or models. In some embodiments, the SSB bitmap comprises multiple patterns. In some embodiments, the SSB position in frequency domain is indicated using different global synchronization channel numbers (GSCNs) .

[0137] In details, some embodiments provide the mapping pattern of SSB for AI-purposed measurement. The pattern design aims to reduce the indication overhead when utilizing SSB for the measurement in AI / ML-empowered BP. The mapping pattern of SSB for AI is illustrated in Table 8.

[0138] Table 8: The Mapping Pattern of SSB for AI:

[0139] Some illustrations from Table 8 are the follows. The SSB Periodicity can be flexibly configured for different purposes or model. For example, the period can be small for spatial prediction while larger for temporal prediction. The SSB Bitmap can be fixed to several patterns to trade-off the signaling overhead and flexibility, and different densities suitable for different prediction scenarios. For example, spares mapping is suitable for the prediction between two sets of parent beams, while dense mapping is suitable for the prediction between parent and child beams. The frequency position of AI-purposed SSB can be indicated specifically using different GSCN, furthermore, multiple SSB in different frequency resources can be simultaneously transmitted. For cross RS sets measurements, the model may require multiple measurements gathered form the narrow-band RSs to give a full picture across the entire bandwidth. Multiple measurements gathered form different frequency-located SSB can be pre-processed to produce the model input.

[0140] Alternatively, the indication of GSCN can be modified to further reduce the overhead. Alt. 1: Indicate the offset values of the GSCN related to AI-purposed SSB with respect to a known GSCN, for example, the GSCN of the common SSB indicated by SIB1. Alt. 2: The NW pre-define the GSCN combinations of the Indicate the offset values of the GSCN related to AI-purposed SSB with respect to a known GSCN.

[0141] Embodiments 4: Report Quantities Configurations Using CSI-RS:

[0142] In some embodiments, referring to FIG. 12, the UE 10 is configured to receive the report configuration from the base station 20 using a channel state information-reference signal (CSI-RS) , wherein the report configuration comprises a configuration of an AI / ML beam prediction, the UE 10 is configured to receive the signal pattern from the base station 20, wherein the signal pattern comprises an AI / ML-specific CSI-RS pattern,  and the UE 10 is configured to report, to the base station 20, the beam prediction, wherein the beam prediction is carried in a CSI. This can solve issues in the prior art and other issues, and provide AI / ML based beam management. It is understandable that the meaning of the AI / ML-specific CSI-RS pattern is similar to the meaning of the AI / ML-specific SSB pattern, and some embodiments of the present disclosure will not be repeated here.

[0143] In details, FIG. 12 illustrates that, in some embodiments, new quantities contain in the reports. Basically, the configurations of report quantities for beam prediction using CSI-RS measurements can be added as a field in CSI-ReportConfig IE if the UE is in RRC_connected. FIG. 12 illustrates that, in some embodiments, the wireless communication method of artificial intelligence (AI)  / machine learning (ML) based beam management includes the following steps.

[0144] Step-1: The base station 20 such as gNB sends configurations for AI / ML-empowered BP using CSI-RS.

[0145] Step-2: gNB sends the CSI-RS for AI-purposed measurements.

[0146] The UE 10 infers the optimal BP based on AI in the following steps.

[0147] Step-3: The UE 10 sends CSI-reports include the beam prediction reports configured by reportQuantity-AI IE. Note: gNB obtains the optimal predicted beam based on the reports.

[0148] Information element (IE) based on embodiment 4 is illustrated as follows.

[0149] Embodiments 5: Beam Synthesis Based on LWS:

[0150] In some embodiments, the relation between the target beam and the plurality of pre-determined beams is acquired by synthesizing the plurality of pre-determined beams in a linearly weighted sum form.

[0151] In details, some embodiments provide the post processing schemes on obtaining these quantities based on the model output. The reported beam can be synthesised based on LWS of predicted beams in such way. Suppose the beam matrix corresponds to beam ID [BID1, BID2, …, BIDN] are [B1, B2, …, BN] , and the weights are scalars [w1, w2, …, w3] , then the synthesised beam is given by

[0152] If the report quantities in beamMeasType filed can also be the post-processed model output, then beamSynWeight is derived by different kind of output. The post-processed model output may be represented in as post processed model output data. The system can interpret the model output data (e.g., the post-processed model output data ) using an analysis component. This can involve for example, correlating the model output data to associated parameters.

[0153] The weighted sum of the N beams: beamSynWeight is derived from its probability to be the top-1 beam. The N beams may refer to N beams having a large channel quality in a cell, and N is a positive integer. N beams may refer to the first N beams with the greatest chance of success (optimal beams) or the largest RSRP. In details, N beams may refer to N best beams indexing from a beam set, optimal beams and probabilities of the optimal beams optimal beams to be N best best beam, and / or N best optimal beams with largest predicted reference signal received powers (RSRP) .

[0154] The weighted sum of the N beams: beamSynWeight is derived from the RSRP measurement. Further, beamSynWeight may be obtained by an adaptive beam forming technology. beamSynWeight may refer to beam synthesis weight of certain index relative to the superior’s element, be from lower and upper pass through successively calculates what is obtained with area method. For the index with the superior’s direct correlation,  its beam synthesis weight is equal to relative weighting. Otherwise, it is equal to the product of the relative weighting of the index and the beam synthesis weight of its upper strata associated element.

[0155] The weighted sum of the N beams: beamSynWeight is derived from the channel CSI or CIR and the commonly known beam set, including Set A and Set B of beams, or beamSynWeight is derived from the predicted ‘ground truth’ beam and the commonly known beam set, including Set A and Set B of beams.

[0156] The weighted sum of the N beams: beamSynWeight is directly output by the AI / ML model.

[0157] The beamSynWeight is either indicated by the gNB or derived by different kind of output. It is a sequence with ‘N’ entries if it is configured by the gNB, or it is set to NULL if derived from the model output, in this case the exact values may be reported to the gNB together with the corresponding beam IDs. For example, it can be indicated by Table 9 as follow.

[0158] Table 9: Beam ID Indication with Weights:

[0159] In another case, the Set A and Set B of beams can also be divided into several beam subset, where each of them contains N beams and is labelled with a unique ID. In some embodiments, spatial-domain DL beam prediction for Set A of beams based on measurement results of Set B of beams. In some embodiments, temporal DL beam prediction for Set A of beams based on the historic measurement results of Set B of beams. In some embodiments, spatial-domain UL beam prediction for Set A of beams based on measurement results of Set B of beams. For spatial-domain DL Tx beam prediction for Set A of beams based on measurement results of Set B of beams ( “BM-Case1” ) , this is to predict some non-measured beam (Set A of beams) from measured Beams (Set B of beams) in spatial domain at a specific timing. For temporal DL Tx beam prediction for Set A of beams based on the historic measurement results of Set B of beams ( “BM-Case2” ) , this is to predict some non-measured beam (Set A of beams) from measured Beams (Set B of beams) in time domain. The indication includes the beam subset ID with the corresponding N weights, as illustrated in Table 10.

[0160] Table 10: Beam subset ID Indication with Weights:

[0161] Optional: The choice of ‘N’ is explicitly indicated by the beamReportNum field, or implicitly configured to the UE by a certain threshold of the predicted RSRP. Only the beams with the predicted RSRP larger than the threshold needs to be reported. If ‘N’ is implicitly configured, then gNB does not know exactly value of ‘N’ thus the beamSynWeight could not be configured, or is automatically set to NULL.

[0162] Embodiments 6: UL Uncertainty Reduction Schemes:

[0163] Some embodiments illustrate how the UL uncertainty will be resolved during the AI / ML-empowered BP.In avoiding of major changes of the protocol, we will not touch the mapping between SSB and RACH Occasion, i.e., the PRACH, and the UL uncertainty is alleviated by additional signaling as follows.

[0164] Alternative 1: PRACH Power Enhancement

[0165] Essentially, the beamforming aims to enhance the received signal power. If selected beam is not the optimal one, the receiver may suffer from low RSRP thus the PRACH may not be correctly detected. A straightforward way is to assign more transmit signal power so as to increase the RSRP.

[0166] In NR, the PRACH already contains the power ramping scheme to ensure the RSRP at gNB. In the spars beam sweeping case, we can assure the PRACH RSRP based on two approaches. Firstly, the Tx power of the RACH preamble can be increased, e.g., we define preambleReceivedTargetPower-AI in SIB1 to provide larger initial power choices for AI-purposed RACH preamble. Secondly, the power ramping step size can be increased that also extends the maximum transmit power to enhance the RSRP. Information element (IE) based on embodiment 6 is illustrated as follows.

[0167] Besides the aforementioned approaches that directly enhance the Tx power of a single PRACH, another choice of sequentially sending multiple RACH preambles, each of which with a pre-defined ramping value, can also be considered to exploit the benefit of jointly detection.

[0168] Alternative 2: Initial Phase for PRACH Transmission

[0169] In this alternation, a beam sweeping over all SSB beams is performed to find a best transmit beam for the PRACH, that as an initial phase before the AI-purposed measurements and reports.

[0170] FIG. 13 illustrates that, in some embodiments, the wireless communication method of artificial intelligence (AI)  / machine learning (ML) based beam management includes the following steps.

[0171] Step-1: The base station 20 such as gNB sends the all the SSB pattern to perform the beam pairing.

[0172] Step-2: Optional: gNB sends PRACH.

[0173] Step-3: gNB sends configurations for AI / ML-empowered BP.

[0174] Step-4: gNB sends the AI-specific SSB pattern (defined in embodiment 5) .

[0175] UE infers the optimal BP based on AI in the following steps.

[0176] Step-5: UE sends PRACH relating to the optimal measured SSB beam.

[0177] Step-6: gNB sends RAR message.

[0178] Step-7: UE sends Msg3 include the beam prediction reports in details. Note: gNB obtain the optimal predicted beam based on the reports.

[0179] In summary, some embodiments identify the above three issues in deploying AI / ML-empowered beam prediction into current protocols, including how to refine measurements and reports, and how to define scenario-based configurations when AI / ML is enabled.
