Description

[0001] SLEEVE COUPLING MEMBER

[0002] FIELD OF INVENTION

[0003] The field of the invention relates to sleeve coupling members for coupling a housing, in particular a housing of a luminaire head, to a pole end. More in particular the field of the invention relates to sleeve coupling members which allow for either post-top or side-entry fixation of the housing to a pole depending on the needs.

[0004] BACKGROUND

[0005] Generally, a luminaire head can be fixed to a pole end following two main configurations. The first configuration corresponds to a pole end oriented in a substantially vertical direction, referred to as “post-top” configuration in the following. The second configuration corresponds to a pole end oriented in a substantially horizontal direction, referred to as “side-entry” configuration in the following. Some existing sleeve coupling members allow for outdoor luminaires to be fixed either according to the post-top configuration, or according to the side-entry configuration, depending on the needs.

[0006] Further, in some outdoor luminaires, the luminaire head angle, defined as the angle between the luminaire head and the end of a pole connecting said luminaire head, is adjustable. Therefore, the light distribution of the outdoor luminaire is adjustable according to the characteristics of the environment to be lighted, such as the width of a road.

[0007] WO2019229045A1 in the name of the applicant discloses an angle adjustment and rotation system which allows for a luminaire head to be adjusted to a variety of different orientations while still allowing for a high degree of precision. The angle adjustment and rotation system comprises a first sleeve member to be coupled to a pole end, a second member to be coupled to the luminaire, and a central bolt. The bolt extends through the sleeve of the first member and attaches the first member to the second member.

[0008] Another existing tiltable joint system for tilting a luminaire head is described in W02020144191 in the name of the applicant. The tiltable joint system comprises a first joint portion with a sleeve configured to be attached to a pole end and a second joint portion configured to be attached to a luminaire head. The first joint portion is coupled by means of a shaft to the second joint portion. The tiltable joint system may be configured for being adjusted from -10° to 120°, preferably from -10° to 30°, in a post-top configuration of the luminaire head, and for being adjusted from -100° to 30°, preferably from -30° to 30°, in a side-entry configuration of the luminaire head.

[0009] WO2022069368A1 in the name of the applicant discloses a further angle adjustment and rotation system for a luminaire, for which the rotation angle of a luminaire head thereof can be adjusted on site, depending on the site to be illuminated and / or the specific application. The angle adjustment and rotation system comprises a first sleeve member configured to be attached to a pole end, a second member configured to be attached to a luminaire head, a pivot element, and a locking element. The first and second member and the pivot element are configured and arranged to enable a rotation movement of the second member relative to the first member around a pivot axis perpendicular to the first axis. The locking element is configured to be in a first state wherein it enables the rotation movement of the second element, and in a plurality of second states along the edge portion, wherein it blocks said rotation movement.

[0010] WO2023161481A1 in the name of the applicant discloses a simple and robust luminaire head for mounting on a pole. The luminaire head comprises a luminaire housing and a clamping mechanism for clamping the luminaire housing onto a pole. The clamping mechanism comprises two sheet metal parts configured to enter in mechanical contact with the pole, and the luminaire housing is configured to receive the two sheet metal parts. The two sheet metal parts robustly clamp the luminaire housing onto the pole.

[0011] Although the above systems provide a good and robust solution for attaching a luminaire head to a support such as a pole, for some applications it is advantageous to look for alternative systems, and in particular systems that are robust and that can withstand vibrations in an improved manner.

[0012] SUMMARY

[0013] An object of embodiments of the invention is to provide an improved sleeve coupling member which is robust, resists vibrations in an improved manner, and allows for an improved coupling of a housing, in particular a housing of a luminaire head, to a pole end. Particular embodiments allow for side-entry and post-top mounting of the housing.

[0014] According to a first aspect of the invention, there is provided a sleeve coupling member for a coupling a housing, such as a housing of a luminaire head or a housing of a solar panel, to a pole end. The pole end may be any pipe end of a base, such as a pole end of a vertical pole or a pole end of a horizontal or inclined pipe connected to a base such as a wall. The sleeve coupling member comprises a sleeve with a first open end for receiving a pole end and a second end. The support is attached to the sleeve at said second end and configured for being coupled to the housing, Preferably, the sleeve and the support are one integral component. The support comprises at least one support wall having a length direction extending substantially perpendicular to an axial direction of the sleeve, and a first and second fixation part protruding from said at least one support wall. The first and second fixation part are configured for receiving a first and second bolt for fixing the housing to the support.

[0015] By providing the sleeve coupling member with a support with first and second fixation members for receiving first and second bolts, the housing can be attached in a robust manner to the pole end, wherein preferably the housing abuts against a support wall of said at least one support wall. In this manner, forces on the housing are transferred to the pole end in an improved manner, resulting in a good resistance against vibration. Further, the first and second bolts can be arranged from the inside of the housing, through a wall of the housing, into the first and second fixations parts, which allows hiding the bolts in the housing and allowing obtaining a more seamless design.

[0016] Preferably, the at least one support wall comprises a first and a second support wall, and wherein the first and second fixation part interconnect the first and second support wall, wherein preferably the first and second support wall are oriented substantially perpendicular to each other. In that manner, the sleeve member is particularly suitable for both post-top and side-entry configurations, wherein in a first configuration the first support wall is intended for being arranged substantially horizontally and in a second configuration the second support wall is intended for being arranged substantially horizontally.

[0017] Preferably, the first support wall has a width direction oriented substantially parallel to the axial direction of the sleeve, and the second support wall has a width direction oriented substantially perpendicular to the axial direction of the sleeve. In this way the housing can be supported on the first support wall when performing a side-entry mounting and on the second support wall when doing a post-top mounting.

[0018] Preferably, the first and second support wall form a corner member. This results in a very robust sleeve coupling member with good vibration properties. Further, this allows obtaining a seamless design in a simple manner. Indeed, such corner member can be arranged against a corresponding corner edge of the housing. Preferably, the first and second fixation part are solid parts each extending from a corner of the corner profile along the first and second support wall.

[0019] In an embodiment, the first and second fixation part are provided with a first and second blind hole, respectively, said first and second blind hole being configured for cooperating with a screw thread of the first and second bolt, respectively.

[0020] In an embodiment, the first and second fixation parts are provided with a first and second bore with a first and second bore axis extending in a plane substantially parallel to the axial direction of the sleeve, respectively. For example, the first and second bores are first and second blind holes configured to receive the end part of the first and second bolts, as in the previous embodiment above. In this way, no nut is needed, which decreases complexity when attaching the housing. This also allows for a faster installation as there is no need for a separate nut nor for a potential second tool, i.e. for the nut, in addition to the one needed for the bolt. Less components also allows for less maintenance.

[0021] Preferably, the first and second bore axis are oriented at an angle of substantially 45 degrees with respect to an abutment surface of the at least one support wall, said abutment surface being intended to be arranged against the housing. For example, when the at least one support wall comprises a first and a second support wall arranged substantially perpendicular to each other, the bore may extend at substantially 45 degrees with respect to the first and second support wall. This will allow for both a post-top and a side-entry mounting of the same housing.

[0022] Preferably, the first and second fixation part are a first and second solid part, respectively, each having two opposite lateral faces, preferably oriented substantially perpendicular to the at least one support wall, and a connecting face interconnecting said two opposite lateral faces. The first and second bore may then extend from the interior of the first and second solid part into the connecting face thereof, respectively. For example, the first and second bores may be first and second blind holes configured to receive and cooperate with threaded end parts of the first and second bolts, respectively. The connecting face is intended to match with a corresponding connecting face of the housing. In an exemplary embodiment, the connecting face may be a curved face, preferably a cylindrically curved face, configured to cooperate with a matching curved face of the housing. In this manner, it may be possible to obtain good contact between the housing and each support wall. In another exemplary embodiment the connecting face may comprise at least three flat faces configured to cooperate with at least three matching flat faces of the housing. In such an embodiment one achieves typically a good contact with one support wall of the at least one support wall. Preferably, the support is provided with a hole for allowing a cable to pass from the housing, into the hole through the sleeve into the pole end. In that manner a functional component arranged in the housing may be connected in a simple manner using a cable which passes through the pole end. The first and second fixation parts may be arranged on opposite sides of the hole. Preferably, the hole extends in each support wall, so that the hole is easily accessible for both post-top and side-entry configurations.

[0023] Preferably, the hole has a largest dimension seen in a direction perpendicular to the axial direction of the sleeve which is smaller than an inner diameter of the sleeve, more preferably smaller than 0.8 times the inner diameter of the sleeve.

[0024] Preferably, a distance between the first and the second fixation part is between 0.5 times and 1.5 times an outer diameter of the sleeve.

[0025] Optionally, the support comprises a first and a second lateral outer wall attached to the at least one support wall at a first and a second end of the support, respectively, said first and second outer wall extending substantially parallel to an axial direction of the sleeve and preferably substantially perpendicular to the at least one support wall.

[0026] Preferably, the sleeve is provided with at least two bores for fixing the sleeve to the pole end with at least two bolts. For example, the at least two bores are through-holes with a screw thread.

[0027] Preferably the sleeve coupling member is an integrally formed metal part. More preferably, the sleeve coupling member is made by die casting.

[0028] According to a further aspect, there is provided an assembly comprising a housing and a sleeve coupling member according to any one of the embodiments described above for coupling the housing to a pole end.

[0029] Preferably, the housing is shaped with a first and second recess configured for receiving the first and second fixation part of the sleeve coupling member, said assembly further comprising a first and second bolt extending from the inside of the housing through the housing into the first and second fixation part, respectively. Preferably, the housing further comprises a lid to close the housing after the first and second bolt have been arranged. In this manner, the bolts can be hidden inside the housing resulting in a seamless design.

[0030] Preferably, the sleeve coupling member has a connecting face as described above, and the first and second recess each have a face matching the connecting face of the sleeve coupling member, so as to obtain a good transfer of forces.

[0031] Preferably, the housing has a first wall portion and a second wall portion interconnected at a corner edge, wherein the first and second recess are arranged at the corner edge of the housing and extend in the first and second wall portion of the housing.

[0032] Preferably, the sleeve coupling member has a support with a hole as described above, and the housing has a hole overlapping at least partly with the hole of the sleeve coupling member.

[0033] Preferably, the housing comprises a bolt compartment, wherein the first and second recess are adjacent the bolt compartment and formed in a wall of the bolt compartment such that the first and the second bolt can extend from the bolt compartment through the housing into the first and second fixation part. The hole in the housing may then be at the interface between the bolt compartment and the sleeve coupling member. In addition, the housing may comprise a main compartment, typically a sealed compartment for receiving one or more functional components, such as an optical block with a light source. A cable gland may be arranged between the main compartment and the bolt compartment. In this manner, a cable coming from the main compartment can pass via the cable gland to the bolt compartment and from there to the pole end, through the hole in the housing and through the hole in the support to the pole end. Typically, the bolt compartment does not have to be a sealed compartment.

[0034] In an exemplary embodiment, the sleeve coupling member is provided with first and second lateral outer walls as described above, and the housing is provided with a first and second lateral wall portion configured to be arranged against the first and second lateral outer wall of the sleeve coupling member.

[0035] Preferably, the housing is a housing of a luminaire head and the housing contains a light source. The light source may comprise one or more light emitting diodes, preferably an array of light emitting diodes. Preferably, the housing further comprises one or more optical elements, for example an optical plate such as a lens plate, configured to adapt the light from the light source. Optionally, a driver configured to drive the light source is arranged in or on the housing.

[0036] In a preferred embodiment, the assembly comprises a power supply line that extends from the pole end through the sleeve coupling assembly into the housing, e.g. the housing of a luminaire head.

[0037] Preferred embodiments relate to an assembly for an outdoor luminaire in which the housing is a housing of a luminaire head. [0039] In an exemplary embodiment, the housing or the lid of the housing may be provided with a hole in which a receptacle configured for a receiving a pluggable external module is arranged. Such receptable may be arranged in an upper cover or in a lower cover. The pluggable external module may contain different control blocks and / or sensors, e.g. a light sensor for sensing the light level of ambient light to automatically control the one or more light sources of the optical block. For uniformity throughout the lighting industry, electrical receptacles for receiving such external modules are mostly made according to specific standards such as standards approved by American National Standards Institute, Inc. (ANSI). Such receptacles are electrically connected to various components of the assembly, and in particular to components of the gear tray. The receptacle has a connection interface located on an external side of the cover structure, so that an external module can be plugged into the receptacle to provide control for the lighting equipment. Preferably, the receptacle and the external control module fulfil the requirements of the ANSI C136.10-2017 standard or of the ANSI C136.41-2013 standard or of the Zhaga Interface Specification Standard (Book 18, Edition 1.0, July 2018, see https: / / www.zhagastandard.org / data / downloadables / lZ0 / 8Zl / book 18.pdf). According to an exemplary embodiment, the receptacle may be implemented as described in PCT publication WO2017133793A1 in the name of the applicant, which is included herein by reference. Optionally, the receptacle may be configured and / or mounted as described in PCT publications WO2020212515 and / or W02021001544A1 in the name of the applicant, which are included herein by reference.

FIGS. 6A- 6D illustrate further variants of possible connecting faces 127 of the fixation parts 123. In the embodiments of FIGS. 6A-6C the connecting surface 127 comprises one or three flat faces, but it will be understood that other numbers of flat surfaces are also possible. Further, the embodiments of FIGS. 6 A and 6B the first and second support wall 121, 122 form a corner profile with a straight corner whilst in the embodiment of FIGS. 6C and 6D the first and second support wall 121 , 122 form a corner profile with a rounded corner.

[0061] Preferably, the support 120 is provided with a hole 128 for allowing a cable (not shown) to pass from the housing 200, into the hole 128 through the sleeve 110 into the pole end P (only shown in FIG. 4B). As best visible in FIG. 3, the first and second fixation parts 123a, 123b are arranged on opposite sides of hole 128. The hole 128 extends in each support wall 121, 122. Preferably, the hole 128 has a largest dimension Eh seen in a direction perpendicular to the axial direction A of the sleeve which is smaller than an inner diameter Di (not shown) of the sleeve 110, more preferably smaller than 0.8 times the inner diameter Di of the sleeve, i.e. Eh < 0.8 Di.

[0062] Preferably, a distance d between the first and the second fixation part 123a, 123b is between 0.5 times and 1.5 times an outer diameter Do of the sleeve, i.e. 0.5. Do < d < 1.5.Do.

[0063] By providing the sleeve coupling member 100 with a support 120 with first and second fixation members 123a, 123b for receiving first and second bolts 300a, 300b, the housing 200 can be attached in a robust manner to the pole end, wherein preferably the housing 200 abuts against at least one of the first and second support wall 121, 122. In this manner, forces on the housing 200 are transferred to the pole end in an improved manner, resulting in good vibration characteristics. Further, the first and second bolts 300a, 300b can be arranged from the inside of the housing 200 into the first and second fixations parts 213a, 213b, which allows hiding the bolts 300a, 300b in the housing 200 resulting in a more seamless design.

[0064] In the illustrated embodiment the support 120 further comprises a first and a second lateral outer wall 129a, 129b attached to the first and second support wall 121, 122 at a first and a second end of the support 120, respectively. The first and second outer wall 129a, 129b extend substantially parallel to the axial direction A of the sleeve and preferably substantially perpendicular to the first and second support wall 121, 122. It is noted that the outer walls 129a, 129b are optional and may be omitted. When the sleeve coupling member 100 is provided with outer walls 129a, 129b, the housing 200 may be provided with a first and second lateral wall portion 229a, 229b configured to be arranged against the first and second lateral outer wall 129a, 129b of the sleeve coupling member 100. This may provide additional strength and robustness to the assembly.

[0065] As illustrated in FIG. 1A and FIGS. 1C-E, the sleeve 110 is provided with two bores 113 for fixing the sleeve 110 to the pole end with at least two bolts 400. Typically, the bores 113 will be provided at a lower side of the sleeve 110 in the side-entry configuration (i.e. the rear side in the post-top configuration), as in FIGS. 1 A-B and FIGS. 1D-E, or on the upper side of the sleeve 110, as in FIG. 1C.

[0066] As illustrated in FIGS. 5 A and 5B, the housing 200 has a first wall portion 221 and a second wall portion 222 interconnected at a corner edge 201, and the first and second recess 223a, 223b are arranged at the corner edge 201 of the housing and extend in the first and second wall portion 221, 222 of the housing 200.

[0067] As illustrated in FIG. 2 and FIGS. 5 A and 5B, the housing has a hole 228 overlapping at least partly with the hole 128 of the sleeve coupling member 100. The housing 200 may comprise a bolt compartment 250 and a main compartment 260 for receiving one or more functional components. In the case of an outdoor luminaire, the main compartment 260 is preferably a sealed compartment in which the light source and other functional components such as a an optical block and / or one or more sensors are arranged. The first and second recess 223a, 223b are adjacent the bolt compartment 250 such that the first and the second bolt 300a, 300b can extend from the bolt compartment 250 through a wall of the housing 200 delimiting the first and second recess 223a, 223b into the first and second fixation part 213a, 213b. Preferably, a cable gland 280 (shown in FIG. 4B) arranged in a hole 270 (visible in FIG. 2 and 5B) is provided between the sealed compartment 260 and the bolt compartment 250. In this manner, a cable coming from a functional component (not shown) in the sealed compartment 260, such as a driver of a light source, can pass via the cable gland 280 to the bolt compartment 250 and from there, through the hole 228 in a wall of the bolt compartment 250 and through the hole 128 in the support 120, to the pole end. Typically, the bolt compartment 250 does not have to be a sealed compartment.
