Systems and methods for microbial detection and analysis of response to a treatment agent

Abstract

Systems and devices for detection of and analysis a microbial species response to a treatment agent are provided. The system comprises a treatment agent that interacts with a microbial species to externalize a previously intracellular target biomolecule. The target biomolecule or a fragment thereof is an extracellular biomolecule target which is analyzed and detected thus indicating microbial susceptibility to the treatment agent. The system can be a rapid infection detection system for detecting a pathogen in a patient and provide treatment prediction for multiple treatment agents, such as antibiotics or other pharmaceutical agents. Devices with multiple treatment and detection channels are also provided. The devices can simultaneously indicate the response of a microbial species to multiple treatment agents and include a detection segment which visibly indicates the microbial response such that the device can be used in a clinical setting to design a treatment protocol for a patient.
