[0046] In a wireless communications system, a UE and an NE (e.g., a base station, gNB) may support wireless communication (e.g., reception and / or transmission of wireless communication) using time-frequency resources. By using time-frequency resources, wireless communications systems can utilize AI / ML (which may also be referred to herein as “AI” ) for a variety of different purposes, such as for network operation, network optimization, automated processing (e.g., self-driving cars in vehicle to everything (V2X) scenarios) , network planning, security information and event management (SIEM) ) , etc. AI / ML can leverage AI models (which may be referred to herein as “models” ) , which represent programs and / or algorithms trained on a set of data to provide outputs, such as to recognize patterns, make decisions, generate content, etc. AI models, for instance, can apply different algorithms to data inputs to provide data output for performing different tasks.

[0047] A wireless communications device may leverage AI / ML positioning to improve location estimate accuracy of the device in a wireless communications system, such as in difficult radio conditions, e.g., environments with heavy non-line of sight (NLOS) . Different AI / ML positioning techniques include direct AI / ML positioning and assisted AI / ML positioning. In direct AI / ML positioning, the output of an AI / ML model includes UE location information. In assisted AI / ML positioning, the output of an AI / ML model includes an enhanced positioning measurement with associated information such as an enhanced line of sight (LOS)  / NLOS classification of the positioning measurement as an output of the AI / ML model.

[0048] AI / ML for device positioning in wireless communications systems can involve determining different measurements, signalling, and techniques to facilitate life cycle management (LCM) operations for direct AI / ML and assisted AI / ML positioning. An example LCM procedure includes the capability for a NE and / or UE to implement performance monitoring (e.g., in real time or near real time) of AI / ML models, and share performance information (e.g., monitoring outcome) with other entities / nodes. A NE and / or UE may obtain ground truth information (e.g., assistance information, input parameters) to assist in AI / ML model performance monitoring calculation. Other example LCM procedures that may utilize ground truth information include updating, switching, activation, and deactivation of an AI / ML model, AI / ML model training, AI / ML model inference, and AI / ML model transfer. Some wireless communications systems lack to ability for a UE and / or other device to obtain ground truth information for different AI / ML procedures, such as AI / ML model performance monitoring.

[0049] The present disclosure provides solutions for enabling UEs and other devices to obtain ground truth information for AI / ML LCM procedures, such as AI / ML model performance monitoring. Ground truth information may include information such as device (e.g., UE, PRU) location information, channel measurements, channel measurement quality, channel measurement timestamps, UE location estimates, ground truth information quality indicators, etc. In at least one aspect, a request and response message framework is provided to enable a UE to request and receive ground truth information (e.g., location information) from a NE, such as a Location Management Function (LMF or location server. A UE, for example, may trigger a request for ground truth information based on UE side LCM tasks, such as performance monitoring of AI / ML models at the UE. Alternatively, or in addition, an NE may transmit ground truth information to a UE independent of (e.g., without reception of) a UE request. Example contents of ground truth information requests and responses are also described herein.

[0050] The present disclosure also provides solutions to enable time alignment of ground truth information to ensure validity of received ground truth information (e.g., UE location estimate) when performing AI / ML performance monitoring. For example, the described solutions enable a UE to request ground truth information for a future time value, and to determine whether received ground truth information is valid at a time value when the ground truth information is to be used. The described techniques also enable a UE to obtain ground truth information from PRUs (e.g., multiple PRUs) for performing different AI / ML LCM procedures.

[0051] By performing the described techniques, devices (e.g., UEs, NEs) in a wireless communications system can utilize AI / ML techniques to obtain more accurate device positioning information.

[0052] Reference is made herein to communicating data or information, such as signaling communication resources and / or communications that are transmitted or received between devices. It is to be appreciated that other terms may be used interchangeably with communicating, such as signaling, transmitting, receiving, outputting, forwarding, retrieving, obtaining, and so forth.

[0053] Aspects of the present disclosure are described in the context of a wireless communications system.

[0054] Figure 1 illustrates an example of a wireless communications system 100 in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure. The wireless communications system 100 may include one or more NEs 102, one or more UEs 104, and a core network (CN) 106. The wireless communications system 100 may support various radio access technologies. In some implementations, the wireless communications system 100 may be a 4G network, such as an LTE network or an LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) network. In some other implementations, the wireless communications system 100 may be a NR network, such as a 5G network, a 5G-Advanced (5G-A) network, or a 5G ultrawideband (5G-UWB) network. In other implementations, the wireless communications system 100 may be a combination of a 4G network and a 5G network, or other suitable radio access technology including Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 (Wi-Fi) , IEEE 802.16 (WiMAX) , IEEE 802.20. The wireless communications system 100 may support radio access technologies beyond 5G, for example, 6G. Additionally, the wireless communications system 100 may support technologies, such as time division multiple access (TDMA) , frequency division multiple access (FDMA) , or code division multiple access (CDMA) , etc.

[0055] The one or more NEs 102 may be dispersed throughout a geographic region to form the wireless communications system 100. One or more of the NEs 102 described herein may be or include or may be referred to as a network node, a base station, an access point (AP) , a network element, a network function (e.g., location server or LMF) , a network entity, a radio access network (RAN) , a NodeB, an eNodeB (eNB) , a next-generation NodeB (gNB) , or other suitable terminology. An NE 102 and a UE 104 may communicate via a communication link, which may be a wireless or wired connection. For example, an NE 102 and a UE 104 may perform wireless communication (e.g., receive signaling, transmit signaling) over a Uu interface.

[0056] An NE 102 may provide a geographic coverage area for which the NE 102 may support services for one or more UEs 104 within the geographic coverage area. For example, an NE 102 and a UE 104 may support wireless communication of signals related to services (e.g., voice, video, packet data, messaging, broadcast, etc. ) according to one or multiple radio access technologies. In some implementations, an NE 102 may be moveable, for example, a satellite associated with a non-terrestrial network (NTN) . In some implementations, different geographic coverage areas associated with the same or different radio access technologies may overlap, but the different geographic coverage areas may be associated with different NE 102.

[0057] The one or more UEs 104 may be dispersed throughout a geographic region of the wireless communications system 100. A UE 104 may include or may be referred to as a remote unit, a mobile device, a wireless device, a remote device, a subscriber device, a transmitter device, a receiver device, or some other suitable terminology. In some implementations, the UE 104 may be referred to as a unit, a station, a terminal, or a client, among other examples. Additionally, or alternatively, the UE 104 may be referred to as an Internet-of-Things (IoT) device, an Internet-of-Everything (IoE) device, or machine-type communication (MTC) device, among other examples.

[0058] A UE 104 may be able to support wireless communication directly with other UEs 104 over a communication link. For example, a UE 104 may support wireless communication directly with another UE 104 over a device-to-device (D2D) communication link. In some implementations, such as vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) deployments, vehicle-to-everything (V2X) deployments, or cellular-V2X deployments, the communication link may be referred to as a sidelink. For example, a UE 104 may support wireless communication directly with another UE 104 over a PC5 interface.

[0059] An NE 102 may support communications with the CN 106, or with another NE 102, or both. For example, an NE 102 may interface with other NE 102 or the CN 106 through one or more backhaul links (e.g., S1, N2, N6, or other network interface) . In some implementations, the NE 102 may communicate with each other directly. In some other implementations, the NE 102 may communicate with each other indirectly (e.g., via the CN 106) . In some implementations, one or more NEs 102 may include subcomponents, such as an access network entity, which may be an example of an access node controller (ANC) . An ANC may communicate with the one or more UEs 104 through one or more other access network transmission entities, which may be referred to as a radio heads, smart radio heads, or transmission-reception points (TRPs) .

[0060] The CN 106 may support user authentication, access authorization, tracking, connectivity, and other access, routing, or mobility functions. The CN 106 may be an evolved packet core (EPC) , or a 5G core (5GC) , which may include a control plane entity that manages access and mobility (e.g., a mobility management entity (MME) , an access and mobility management functions (AMF) ) and a user plane entity that routes packets or interconnects to external networks (e.g., a serving gateway (S-GW) , a packet data network (PDN) gateway (P-GW) , or a user plane function (UPF) ) . In some implementations, the control plane entity may manage non-access stratum (NAS) functions, such as mobility, authentication, and bearer management (e.g., data bearers, signal bearers, etc. ) for the one or more UEs 104 served by the one or more NEs 102 associated with the CN 106.

[0061] The CN 106 may communicate with a packet data network over one or more backhaul links (e.g., via an S1, N2, N6, or other network interface) . The packet data network may include an application server. In some implementations, one or more UEs 104 may communicate with the application server. A UE 104 may establish a session (e.g., a protocol data unit (PDU) session, or the like) with the CN 106 via an NE 102. The CN 106 may route traffic (e.g., control information, data, and the like) between the UE 104 and the application server using the established session (e.g., the established PDU session) . The PDU session may be an example of a logical connection between the UE 104 and the CN 106 (e.g., one or more network functions of the CN 106) .

[0062] In the wireless communications system 100, the NEs 102 and the UEs 104 may use resources of the wireless communications system 100 (e.g., time resources (e.g., symbols, slots, subframes, frames, or the like) or frequency resources (e.g., subcarriers, carriers) ) to perform various operations (e.g., wireless communications) . In some implementations, the NEs 102 and the UEs 104 may support different resource structures. For example, the NEs 102 and the UEs 104 may support different frame structures. In some implementations, such as in 4G, the NEs 102 and the UEs 104 may support a single frame structure. In some other implementations, such as in 5G and among other suitable radio access technologies, the NEs 102 and the UEs 104 may support various frame structures (i.e., multiple frame structures) . The NEs 102 and the UEs 104 may support various frame structures based on one or more numerologies.

[0063] One or more numerologies may be supported in the wireless communications system 100, and a numerology may include a subcarrier spacing and a cyclic prefix. A first numerology (e.g., μ=0) may be associated with a first subcarrier spacing (e.g., 15 kHz) and a normal cyclic prefix. In some implementations, the first numerology (e.g., μ=0) associated with the first subcarrier spacing (e.g., 15 kHz) may utilize one slot per subframe. A second numerology (e.g., μ=1) may be associated with a second subcarrier spacing (e.g., 30 kHz) and a normal cyclic prefix. A third numerology (e.g., μ=2) may be associated with a third subcarrier spacing (e.g., 60 kHz) and a normal cyclic prefix or an extended cyclic prefix. A fourth numerology (e.g., μ=3) may be associated with a fourth subcarrier spacing (e.g., 120 kHz) and a normal cyclic prefix. A fifth numerology (e.g., μ=4) may be associated with a fifth subcarrier spacing (e.g., 240 kHz) and a normal cyclic prefix.

[0064] A time interval of a resource (e.g., a communication resource) may be organized according to frames (also referred to as radio frames) . Each frame may have a duration, for example, a 10 millisecond (ms) duration. In some implementations, each frame may include multiple subframes. For example, each frame may include 10 subframes, and each subframe may have a duration, for example, a 1 ms duration. In some implementations, each frame may have the same duration. In some implementations, each subframe of a frame may have the same duration.

[0065] Additionally, or alternatively, a time interval of a resource (e.g., a communication resource) may be organized according to slots. For example, a subframe may include a number (e.g., quantity) of slots. The number of slots in each subframe may also depend on the one or more numerologies supported in the wireless communications system 100. For instance, the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth numerologies (i.e., μ=0, μ=1, μ=2, μ=3, μ=4) associated with respective subcarrier spacings of 15 kHz, 30 kHz, 60 kHz, 120 kHz, and 240 kHz may utilize a single slot per subframe, two slots per subframe, four slots per subframe, eight slots per subframe, and 16 slots per subframe, respectively. Each slot may include a number (e.g., quantity) of symbols (e.g., OFDM symbols) . In some implementations, the number (e.g., quantity) of slots for a subframe may depend on a numerology. For a normal cyclic prefix, a slot may include 14 symbols. For an extended cyclic prefix (e.g., applicable for 60 kHz subcarrier spacing) , a slot may include 12 symbols. The relationship between the number of symbols per slot, the number of slots per subframe, and the number of slots per frame for a normal cyclic prefix and an extended cyclic prefix may depend on a numerology. It should be understood that reference to a first numerology (e.g., μ=0) associated with a first subcarrier spacing (e.g., 15 kHz) may be used interchangeably between subframes and slots.

[0066] In the wireless communications system 100, an electromagnetic (EM) spectrum may be split, based on frequency or wavelength, into various classes, frequency bands, frequency channels, etc. By way of example, the wireless communications system 100 may support one or multiple operating frequency bands, such as frequency range designations FR1 (410 MHz –7.125 GHz) , FR2 (24.25 GHz –52.6 GHz) , FR3 (7.125 GHz –24.25 GHz) , FR4 (52.6 GHz –114.25 GHz) , FR4a or FR4-1 (52.6 GHz –71 GHz) , and FR5 (114.25 GHz –300 GHz) . In some implementations, the NEs 102 and the UEs 104 may perform wireless communications over one or more of the operating frequency bands. In some implementations, FR1 may be used by the NEs 102 and the UEs 104, among other equipment or devices for cellular communications traffic (e.g., control information, data) . In some implementations, FR2 may be used by the NEs 102 and the UEs 104, among other equipment or devices for short-range, high data rate capabilities.

[0067] FR1 may be associated with one or multiple numerologies (e.g., at least three numerologies) . For example, FR1 may be associated with a first numerology (e.g., μ=0) , which includes 15 kHz subcarrier spacing; a second numerology (e.g., μ=1) , which includes 30 kHz subcarrier spacing; and a third numerology (e.g., μ=2) , which includes 60 kHz subcarrier spacing. FR2 may be associated with one or multiple numerologies (e.g., at least 2 numerologies) . For example, FR2 may be associated with a third numerology (e.g., μ=2) , which includes 60 kHz subcarrier spacing; and a fourth numerology (e.g., μ=3) , which includes 120 kHz subcarrier spacing.

[0068] According to implementations, one or more of the NEs 102 and the UEs 104 are operable to implement various aspects of the techniques described with reference to the present disclosure. For example, a UE 104 transmits a ground truth information request to a NE 102 including a request for UE location information and uncertainty information associated with the UE location information. The UE 104 receives, based at least in part on the ground truth information request, a ground truth information response, and performs an AI / ML procedure based at least in part on the ground truth information response.

[0069] An NE 102 (e.g., location server, LMF, a base station, gNB) receives (e.g., from a UE 104) a ground truth information request including a request UE location information and uncertainty information associated with the UE location information. The NE 102 transmits, based at least in part on the ground truth information request, a ground truth information response, where the ground truth information response includes an indication of whether ground truth information for an AI / ML procedure is available.

[0070] Regarding positioning techniques, Table 1 provides some example positioning techniques that are supported in some wireless communications systems. Separate positioning techniques (e.g., as indicated in Table 1) can be configured and performed based on the parameters of the LMF and UE capabilities. The transmission of Positioning Reference Signals (PRS) enables the UE to perform UE positioning-related measurements to enable the computation of a UE’s location estimate and are configured per Transmission Reception Point (TRP) , where a TRP may transmit one or more beams. Table 1

[0071] Figure 2 illustrates an example of system 200 for NR beam-based positioning in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure. The system 200 illustrates a UE 104, an NE 202, and NE 204, and an NE 206. The NEs 202, 204, 206, for instance, represent instances of NEs 102 (e.g., gNBs) . In at least some implementations, the NEs 202, 204, 206 represent different TRPs. Further, the NE 206 can represent a serving NE for the UE 104, e.g., a reference NE.Further, the NEs 204, 206 can represent neighboring NEs relative to the NE 206 and / or the UE 104. In the system 200, PRS can be transmitted by the NEs 202, 204, 206 via DL-PRS resources using narrow beams over FR1 and FR2. For instance: The NE 202 can utilize DL-PRS resources 208 as part of a Resource Set ID#1 to transmit PRS; the NE 204 can utilize DL-PRS resources 210 as part of a Resource Set ID#0 to transmit PRS; and the NE 206 can utilize DL-PRS resources 212 as part of a Resource Set ID#0 to transmit PRS. The system 200 also includes a location server 214 (e.g., an LMF) that can communicate with the NEs 202, 204, 206 (e.g., via NR Positioning Protocol Annex (NRPPa) signaling) to control PRS transmission by the NEs 202, 204, 206 and perform positioning operations, e.g., for determining a position of the UE 104.

[0072] The implementation described in the system 200 can be different when compared to LTE, where the PRS is transmitted across the whole cell. For example, in LTE scenarios, PRS may be transmitted via undirected transmission across an entire a cell, instead of focused using narrow beams. The PRS in the system 200 can be locally associated at the different NEs with a PRS Resource ID and Resource Set ID for a respective NE. UE 104 positioning measurements (e.g., Reference Signal Time Difference (RSTD) and PRS reference signal received power (RSRP) measurements) can be performed between beams (e.g., between a different pair of DL-PRS resources or DL-PRS resource sets) as opposed to different cells, such as in LTE. In addition, there are additional Uplink (UL) positioning methods for the network to exploit in order to compute the location of the UE 104.

[0073] Table 2 and Table 3 illustrate reference signal to measurements mapping for the supported Radio Access Technology (RAT) -dependent positioning techniques at the UE and gNB, respectively. RAT-dependent positioning techniques involve the 3GPP RAT and CN entities to perform the position estimation of the UE, which are differentiated from RAT-independent positioning techniques which may use Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) , Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensor, WLAN and Bluetooth technologies for performing target device (UE) positioning. Table 2 Table 3

[0074] Table 4 illustrates example positioning measurement definitions for DL-based and UL-based positioning. Different downlink measurements used for RAT-dependent positioning techniques include DL PRS-RSRP, DL RSTD and UE Receiver-Transmitter (Rx-Tx) Time Difference. The following measurement configurations may be used: 4 Pair of DL RSTD measurements can be performed per pair of cells, and each measurement is performed between a different pair of DL PRS Resources / Resource Sets with a single reference timing; 8 DL PRS RSRP measurements can be performed on different DL PRS resources from the same cell. Table 4

[0080] Figure 4 illustrates a system 400 for AI / ML RAN intelligence in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure. The system 400 includes data collection functions 402, model training functions 404, inference functions 406, and an actor function 408. The data collection functions 402 can provide input data to the model training functions 404 and the model inference functions 406. In some implementations, AI / ML algorithm-specific data preparation (e.g., data pre-processing and cleaning, formatting, and transformation) may not be performed by the data collection function 402. Examples of input data may include measurements from UEs or different network entities, feedback from the actor function 408, output from an AI / ML model, etc. Training data can represent data used as input for the model training functions 404. Inference data can represent data used as input for the AI / ML model inference functions 406.

[0081] The model training functions 404 can perform ML model training, validation, and testing which may generate model performance metrics as part of a model testing procedure. The model training functions 404 can also perform data preparation (e.g. data pre-processing and cleaning, formatting, and transformation) based on training data delivered by the data collection function 402. Model deployment / update can be used to initially deploy a trained, validated, and tested AI / ML model to the model inference functions 406 or to deliver an updated model to the model inference functions 406.

[0082] The model inference functions 406 can provide AI / ML model inference output, e.g. predictions or decisions. The model inference functions 406 can also perform data preparation (e.g. data pre-processing and cleaning, formatting, and transformation) based on inference data delivered by the data collection function 402. The output represents inference output of an AI / ML model produced by the model inference functions 406. The model performance feedback may be used for monitoring the performance of an AI / ML model. The actor function 408 can receive the output from the model inference functions 406 and trigger or perform corresponding actions. The actor function 408 may trigger actions directed to other entities or to the actor function 408. The feedback 410 represents information that can be used to derive training data, inference data, or to monitor the performance of the AI / ML model and its impact to the network through updating of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and performance counters.

[0083] In some implementations, a UE may support the functions of a PRU, and a PRU can support different functions. For instance, a PRU can support service level association, association update, and disassociation with a serving LMF. The PRU can send service level association, association update, or disassociation to LMF via LCS supplementary service message. The PRU may support association with multiple LMFs, e.g., for cases where a PRU is in multiple LMF overlapped serving areas. The PRU information included in a PRU association or PRU association update can include one or more of PRU positioning capabilities, location information, or PRU ON / OFF state. PRU ON / OFF states can indicate temporary availability of the PRU functionality of a UE at the serving LMF.

[0084] The following represents example terminologies that may be used herein.

[0085] Transmission Point (TP) : A set of geographically co-located transmit antennas (e.g. antenna array (with one or more antenna elements) ) for one cell, part of one cell, or one PRS TP. Transmission Points can include base station (eNodeB) antennas, remote radio heads, a remote antenna of a base station, an antenna of a PRS-only TP, etc. One cell can be formed by one or multiple transmission points. For a homogeneous deployment, each transmission point may correspond to one cell.

[0086] Reception Point (RP) : A set of geographically co-located receive antennas (e.g. antenna array (with one or more antenna elements) ) for one cell, part of one cell or one UL-SRS-only RP. Reception Points can include base station (ng-eNB or gNB) antennas, remote radio heads, a remote antenna of a base station, an antenna of a UL-SRS-only RP, etc. One cell can include one or multiple reception points. For a homogeneous deployment, each reception point may correspond to one cell.

[0087] Transmission-Reception Point (TRP) : A set of geographically co-located antennas (e.g. antenna array (with one or more antenna elements) ) supporting TP and / or RP functionality.

[0088] PRS-only TP: A TP which only transmits PRS signals or DL-PRS for PRS-based TBS positioning and is not associated with a cell.

[0089] PRU: A PRU at a known location can perform positioning measurements (e.g., RSTD, RSRP, UE Rx-Tx Time Difference measurements, DL Reference Signal Carrier Phase, DL Reference Signal Carrier Phase Difference, etc. ) and report these measurements to a location server. In addition, the PRU can transmit SRS to enable TRPs to measure and report UL positioning measurements (e.g., RTOA, UL-AoA, NE Rx-Tx Time Difference, UL Reference Signal Carrier Phase, UL Reference Signal Carrier Phase Difference, etc. ) from PRU at a known location. The PRU measurements can be compared by a location server with the measurements expected at the known PRU location to determine correction terms for other nearby target devices. The DL and / or UL location measurements for other target devices can be corrected based on the previously determined correction terms. A PRU may also include a TRP with a known location.

[0090] Supported Functionalities: Functionalities that UE can indicate by using UE capability information, e.g., via Radio Resouce Control (RRC)  / LTE Positioning Protocol (LPP) signaling.

[0091] Applicable Functionalities: Functionalities that the UE is ready to apply at inference.

[0092] Activated Functionalities: Functionalities already enabled for performing inference.

[0093] Model monitoring: A procedure that monitors the inference performance of the AI / ML model.

[0094] Implementations described herein include UE procedures to request and receive ground truth information. For example, procedures are defined from the UE perspective to trigger a request for ground truth information and associated information from the network in order to perform LCM tasks, e.g., performance monitoring. According to one aspect, the LCM task of triggering performance monitoring at the UE-side is used to initiate procedures to request ground truth information from the network, e.g., LMF, Network Data Analytics Function (NWDAF) , AMF, other Network Functions (NFs) . The ground truth information may include at least two components. A first component can include channel measurement, channel measurement quality indicator, and / or channel measurement timestamp. A second component can include ground truth label (or approximation / estimates) , ground truth label quality indicator, and ground truth label timestamps. One or both of these components may be requested by the UE.

[0095] Examples of the channel measurement (e.g., used for AI / ML positioning) may include DL-RSTD, UE Rx-Tx time difference measurement, Reference Signal Carrier Phase (RSCP) , Reference Signal Carrier Phase Difference (RSCPD) , Delay Profile, Power delay Profile, Channel Impulse Response, Azimuth / Elevation Angle-of-Arrival, PRS RSRP / RSRPP, Angle Delay Profile, path-based timing measurements or sample-based timing measurements associated to any of the aforementioned measurements, etc. Examples of ground truth labels may include UE location estimates with associated confidence value and / or uncertainty value, LOS / NLOS indicators, path time of arrivals (TOAs) relative to a path, etc.

[0096] In some implementations, a UE-side may be defined as a target device / UE local device or an over-the-top (OTT) server associated to the target device / UE. In one or more aspects, for an OTT server, the OTT server may initiate the request for ground truth information and send the request to UE. The UE may forward the request or initiate request to a network entity, e.g., LMF via an LPP message, a Secure User Plane message (SUPL) message, Supplementary Service (SS) message, or Location Service User Plane Positioning (LCS-UPP) message. In UPP, an LMF and UE may utilize a user plane connection to transfer supplementary services messages and LPP messages. The User Plane protocol (LCS-UPP) can support supplementary services messages and LPP messages transport between the UE and the LMF. In aspects, where monitoring is performed at the UE, the received ground truth information (e.g., from the NE) and the inference result (e.g., based on a UE-sided model) may be used to compute a plurality of performance metrics (e.g., root mean square error (RMSE) , accuracy comparison, etc. ) to ascertain the performance of the AI / ML model at the UE-side used for positioning.

[0097] In some implementations, the requested and / or received ground truth information may be used for online and offline training purposes at the UE-side. For example, in online training, an AI / ML training process for a model being used for inference can trained (e.g., continuously) in real time or near real time with the arrival of new training samples and / or ground truth information. The notions of real-time vs. non-real-time can be context-dependent and can be relative to the inference time scale. There may be cases that may not conform to this definition may still be categorized as online training by commonly accepted conventions. Fine-tuning / re-training of an AI / ML model may be done via online or offline training.

[0098] Offline training can refer to an AI / ML training process where the model is trained based on collected dataset and / or ground truth information, and where the trained model is later used or delivered for inference. There may be cases that may not conform to this definition but can still be categorized as offline training.

[0099] Figure 5 illustrates an example signaling diagram 500 for a UE-triggered location information request in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure. The signaling diagram 500, for instance, illustrates a UE triggered information delivery procedure which enables a NE to provide location information to the UE. The location information may include ground truth location information of the UE and / or related ground truth measurement information of other UEs. In some implementations, the signaling diagram 500 may use LPP for signaling. The signaling diagram 500 includes a UE side 502 and a NE 504. The UE side 502 may represent a UE 104 and / or an OTT server associated with a UE 104. The NE 504 may represent a network function such as an LMF or location server.

[0100] Step 0: The UE side 502 may trigger performance monitoring of one or more AI / ML models. The performance monitoring, for example, may be triggered by a performance monitoring event and / or based on a periodic or scheduled performance monitoring.

[0101] Step 1: The UE side 502 may transmit a UERequestLocationInformation message to the NE 504 (e.g., LMF) to request ground truth information, e.g., location information indicating the type of location information requested and optionally the associated positioning QoS and / or scheduled time in advance in which to receive the ground truth location information. If the NE 504 is an LMF, example signaling such as LPP may be employed. If the NE 504 is a location server, the LCS supplementary service (SS) , SUPL, or LCS UPP messages maybe employed.

[0102] Step 2: The NE 504 sends a UEProvideLocationInformation message to the UE side 502 to transfer ground truth information, e.g., location information. The ground truth information transferred may or may not match or be a subset of the location information requested in Step 1 unless the NE 504 or location server explicitly allows additional location information to be sent to the UE side 502. If Step 3 does not occur, this message can set an end message indication, e.g., endTransaction information element to TRUE.

[0103] Step 3: If requested in Step 1, the NE 504 can send additional UEProvideLocationInformation messages to the UE side 502 to transfer ground truth information that may or may not match or be a subset of the location information requested in Step 1 unless the NE 504 explicitly allows additional location information. If due to a cause / event, the location information provided in Step 2 is to be updated (e.g., if coarse location is provided or if the location information is updated due to UE mobility in Step 2) , the location information provided in Step 3 may be an update of Step 2. In some implementations, the delta component or information that has is to be updated with respect to the message may be transferred in Step 3. In other implementation, Step 2 and / or Step 3 may be periodically reported to the UE side 502 with a fixed reporting interval and reporting amount / reporting duration. The message may include an end message indication, e.g., an endTransaction information element is set to TRUE.

[0104] Figure 6 illustrates an example signaling diagram 600 for an unsolicited location information response procedure in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure. The signaling diagram 600, for instance, illustrates an unsolicited location information delivery procedure which enables a NE to provide unsolicited location information to the UE. In some implementations, the signaling diagram 600 may use LPP as a signaling.

[0105] Step 0: The UE side 502 may trigger performance monitoring of one or more AI / ML models. The performance monitoring, for example, may be triggered by a performance monitoring event and / or based on a periodic or scheduled performance monitoring.

[0106] Step 1: The NE 504 sends a UEProvideLocationInformation message to the UE side 502 to transfer ground truth information, e.g., location information. The ground truth information transferred may or may not match or be a subset of the location information requested in Step 1 unless the NE 504 explicitly allows additional location information to be sent to the UE side 502. If Step 2 does not occur, this message can set the endTransaction information element (IE) to TRUE.

[0107] Step 2: The NE 504 sends additional UEProvideLocationInformation messages to the UE side 502 to transfer ground truth information transferred and may or may not match or be a subset of the location information requested in Step 1 unless the NE 504 explicitly allows additional location information. The message can include an endTransaction IE set to TRUE.

[0108] In some implementations, a UE may trigger a request for ground truth information and associated information from another UE over a Sidelink (SL) interface (e.g., using Sidelink Positioning Protocol (SLPP) ) in order to perform LCM tasks, e.g., performance monitoring. Alternatively, or in addition, another UE may transmit ground truth information to the UE in an unsolicited manner.

[0109] Figure 7 illustrates an example signaling diagram 700 for a UE-triggered location information request from another UE in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure. The signaling diagram 700, for instance, illustrates a UE triggered information delivery procedure which enables another UE to provide unsolicited location information to the UE. The location information may include ground truth location information of the UE and / or related ground truth measurement information of other UEs. In some implementations, the signaling diagram 700 may use SLPP for signaling. The signaling diagram 700 includes a UE side 702 and a UE 704. The UE side 702 may represent a UE 104 and / or an OTT server associated with a UE 104. The UE 704 may be a UE 104, a server UE, an anchor UE, a PRU, etc.

[0110] Step 0: The UE side 702 may trigger performance monitoring of one or more AI / ML models. The performance monitoring, for example, may be triggered by a performance monitoring event and / or based on a periodic or scheduled performance monitoring.

[0111] Step 1: The UE side 702 may transmit a UERequestLocationInformation message to the UE 704 to request ground truth information, e.g., location information indicating the type of location information requested and optionally the associated positioning QoS and / or scheduled time in advance in which to receive the ground truth location information.

[0112] Step 2: The UE 704 sends a UEProvideLocationInformation message to the UE side 702 to transfer ground truth information, e.g., location information. The ground truth information transferred may or may not match or be a subset of the location information requested in Step 1. If Step 3 does not occur, this message can set an end message indication, e.g., endTransaction information element to TRUE.

[0113] Step 3: If requested in Step 1, the UE 704 can send additional UEProvideLocationInformation messages to the UE side 702 to transfer ground truth information that may or may not match or be a subset of the location information requested in Step 1. In other implementation, Step 2 and / or Step 3 may be periodically reported to the UE side 702 with a fixed reporting interval and reporting amount / reporting duration. The message may include an end message indication, e.g., an endTransaction information element is set to TRUE.

[0114] Figure 8 illustrates an example signaling diagram 800 for an unsolicited location information response procedure in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure. The signaling diagram 800, for instance, illustrates an unsolicited location information delivery procedure which enables another UE to provide unsolicited location information to the UE. In some implementations, the signaling diagram 800 may use SLPP as a signaling.

[0115] Step 0: The UE side 702 may trigger performance monitoring of one or more AI / ML models. The performance monitoring, for example, may be triggered by a performance monitoring event and / or based on a periodic or scheduled performance monitoring.

[0116] Step 1: The UE 704 sends a UEProvideLocationInformation message to the UE side 702 to transfer ground truth information, e.g., location information. The ground truth information transferred may or may not match or be a subset of the location information requested in Step 1. If Step 2 does not occur, this message can set the endTransaction IE to TRUE.

[0117] Step 2: The UE 704 sends additional UEProvideLocationInformation messages to the UE side 702 to transfer ground truth information transferred and may or may not match or be a subset of the location information requested in Step 1. The message can include an endTransaction IE set to TRUE.

[0118] In some implementations, the LCM task of triggering performance monitoring at the UE side 702 can be used to initiate procedures to request ground truth information from the UE 704, e.g., server UE, anchor UE, PRU, etc. The ground truth information may include at least two components: A first component can include channel measurement, channel measurement quality indicator, and / or channel measurement timestamp. A second component can include ground truth label (or approximation / estimates) , ground truth label indicator, and / or ground truth label timestamps. One or both of these components may be requested by the UE side 702. Examples of the channel measurement may include SL-RSTD, UE Rx-Tx time difference measurement, SL RSCP, SL RSCPD, SL Delay Profile, SL Power delay Profile, SL Channel Impulse Response, SL Azimuth / Elevation Angle-of-Arrival / Departure, SL-PRS RSRP / RSRPP, SL Angle Delay Profile, SL path-based timing measurements or SL sample-based timing measurements associated to any of the aforementioned measurements, etc. Examples of ground truth labels may include UE location estimates with associated confidence value and / or uncertainty value, LOS / NLOS indicators, path time of arrivals (TOAs) relative to a path, etc.

[0119] Implementations described herein provide for time alignment for reception of ground truth information and performance monitoring. For example, solutions are provided in which a target UE / device to perform AI / ML positioning (e.g., AI / ML model performance monitoring) may align the time instances to request and receive ground truth information from a NE (e.g., LMF or location server) with the calculated location using AI / ML positioning, e.g., during inference phase.

[0120] Figure 9 illustrates an example signaling diagram 900 in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure. The signaling diagram 900 includes a UE side 902 and a NE 904. The UE side 902 may represent a UE 104 and / or an OTT server associated with a UE 104. The NE 904 may represent a network function, such as an LMF or location server.

[0121] Step 0: The UE side 902 triggers AI / ML-based positioning and coordinates with the NE 904 to receive configurations to perform positioning measurements, which can be used as input for an AI / ML model.

[0122] Step 1: The UE side 902 device is to perform an LCM procedure. The UE side 902, for example, is to track the performance of one or more AI / ML models at the UE side 902, e.g., by comparing the ground truth information with inference output at the UE side 902, and deriving various monitoring metrics which can define the performance of the one or more AI / ML models.

[0123] Step 2: At time instance t0 the UE side 902 can request ground truth information from the NE 904 using procedures described above and / or by reusing existing signaling such as LPP RequestAssistanceData. The ground truth information may include but is not limited to UE location information expressed as absolute location, relative location, relative range to other RAN nodes / UEs or relative direction to other RAN nodes / UEs. Additional location uncertainty information may also be requested, e.g., where the UE requests a UE location with a high confidence / low uncertainty, e.g., 95%or 99%confidence. In some implementations, the requested ground truth information may be provided in a periodic or one shot manner based on the type of request.

[0124] Step 3: At time instance t1, AI / ML model (s) at the UE side 902 can generate a location of the UE side 902 based on the inference output with an associated location uncertainty and / or confidence.

[0125] Step 4: At time instance t2, The NE 904 can provision the UE with the requested ground truth information at time t0, using procedures described above and / or by reusing existing signaling such as LPP ProvideAssistanceData.

[0126] Step 4.1: The ground truth information may include but is not limited to UE location information expressed as absolute location, relative location, relative range to other RAN nodes / UEs or relative direction to other RAN nodes / UEs. Additional location uncertainty information may also be requested, such as when the UE side 902 is to determine a UE location with a high confidence / low uncertainty, e.g., 95%or 99%confidence. In some implementations, the NE 904 may further indicate that the provided ground truth information is valid based on the request made at time instance, t0. The UE side 902 may trigger multiple requests for ground truth information at different time instances, and may indicate the validity of the provided location information according to the received UE requests at different / multiple time instances.

[0127] Step 4.2: An indication may also be provided by the NE 904 to the UE side 902 in the event of the unavailability of ground truth information. This may be provided as an error cause to the UE side 902.

[0128] Step 5: At time instance t3, the UE side 902 may have information to perform AI / ML performance monitoring of one or more AI / ML models at the UE side 902.

[0129] Although the steps in the signaling diagram 900 are sequentially described, in some implementations, Step 3 may occur before Step 2 based on the stage of the positioning procedure at the UE side 902. The ground truth information requested and received at different time instances, which may be separated by longer intervals, may result in the received ground truth information not being valid for the computed UE position / location. This may cause the UE side 902 to re-request the ground truth information valid for its current computed UE location / position. In some aspects, the above time instances may also be expressed as validity time intervals with a start and end time, and each of the steps may have overlapping time intervals.

[0130] In some implementations, the NE 904 (e.g., location server / LMF) may configure a maximum allowed location information validity time window, during which the provided ground truth information can be compared against the calculated AI / ML positioning information, e.g., during the inference stage. This time window may be characterized by a start time, time window length (duration) , end time, periodicity (e.g., if the time window is to be periodic) , etc. In some implementations, a maximum allowed offset of the ground truth information and calculated A / ML positioning information may be indicated, specified, or configured, e.g., an example offset may include a horizontal or vertical accuracy value for which the ground truth may be considered valid. This can be transmitted by the UE side 902 in the request message or configured by the NE 904 in the response message received by the UE side 902.

[0131] Figure 10 illustrates an example signaling diagram 1000 in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure. The signaling diagram 1000 includes a UE side 1002 and a NE 1004. The UE side 1002 may represent a UE 104 and / or an OTT server associated with a UE 104. The NE 1004 may represent a network function, such as an LMF or location server. The signaling diagram 1000, for example, illustrates procedure to enable efficient AI / ML performance monitoring by ensuring that the validity of the ground truth information aligns with a computed UE location using AI / ML methods.

[0132] Step 0: The UE side 1002 triggers performance of AI / ML-based positioning, and coordinates with the NE 1004 to receive configurations to perform positioning measurements, which can be used as input for AI / ML model.

[0133] Step 1: The UE side 1002 determines to perform an LCM procedure, e.g., track the performance of one or more AI / ML models at the UE side 1002, e.g., by comparing the ground truth with its inference output and deriving various monitoring metrics which can define the performance of the one or more AI / ML models.

[0134] Step 2: At a future time instance tn, The UE side 1002 requests ground truth information from the NE 1004 using procedures described above and / or by reusing existing signaling such as LPP RequestAssistanceData at a future time instance. This procedure can be enabled using the scheduledLocationTime IE transmitted from UE side 1002 to the NE 1004 to obtain ground truth information, e.g., location measurements or location estimate valid at the time instance tn. The scheduled location time may be requested in a variety of time bases, e.g., based on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) time, GNSS time, network time in terms of LTE / NR Physical Cell Identity (PCI) , LTE / NR Absolute Radio Frequency Channel Number (ARFCN) , LTE / NR Cell Global Identifier (CGI) , NR SFN, NR slot, relative time, etc. The ground truth information may include but is not limited to UE location information expressed as absolute location, relative location, relative range to other RAN nodes / UEs or relative direction to other RAN nodes / UEs, etc. Additional location uncertainty information may also be requested, such as where the UE side 1002 is to obtain a UE location with a high confidence / low uncertainty, e.g., 95%or 99%confidence. In some implementations, the requested ground truth information may be provided in a periodic or one shot manner based on the type of request.

[0135] Step 3: At a future time instance tn, model (s) at the UE side 1002 can generate a UE location based on the inference output with an associated location uncertainty / confidence at a future time instance.

[0136] Step 4: At time instance tn, the NE 1004 can provision the UE side 1002 with the requested ground truth information using procedures described above and / or by using signaling such as LPP ProvideAssistanceData.

[0137] Step 4.1: The ground truth information may include but is not limited to UE location information expressed as absolute location, relative location, relative range to other RAN nodes / UEs or relative direction to other RAN nodes / UEs. Additional location uncertainty information may also be requested, such as where UE is to obtain a UE location with a high confidence / low uncertainty, e.g., 95%or 99%confidence.

[0138] Step 4.2: An indication may also be provided by the NE 1004 to the UE side 1002 in the event of the unavailability of ground truth information. This may be provided as an error cause to the UE side 1002.

[0139] Step 5: At time instance tn the UE side 1002 may have information to perform AI / ML performance monitoring of one or more AI / ML models at the UE side 1002. Although the steps in the signaling diagram 1000 are sequentially described, Step 3 may occur before Step 2 based on the stage of the positioning procedure at the UE side 1002. The ground truth information requested and received at different time instances, which may be separated by longer intervals, may result in the received ground truth information not being valid for the computed UE position / location. This may cause the UE side 1002 to re-request the ground truth information valid for its current computed UE location / position. In some aspects, the above time instances may also be expressed as validity time intervals with a start and end time, and the steps described in the signaling diagram 1000 may have overlapping time intervals.

[0140] In some implementations, the ground truth information may include positioning / channel measurements for which a UE / target device may compute its own location. In aspects, the ground truth information may be computed at the UE based on received configurations (e.g., DL-PRS configurations) from a NE, e.g., location server / LMF. In some examples, a UE may be configured to perform AI / ML positioning or non-AI / ML positioning, e.g., at Step 0 of the signaling diagram 1000. The DL-PRS configuration provided to the UE can be applicable to perform AI / ML positioning measurements and non-AI / ML positioning measurements, e.g., DL-RSTD, UE Rx-Tx time difference, PRS RSRP / RSRPP, RSCP, RSCPD, etc. There may be cases where the UE may not be able to perform AI / ML-based positioning and the UE may utilize the following example fallback options to provide the UE location estimate. The UE, for instance, may signal the fallback indication to the NE, e.g., using LPP ProvideLocationInformation message.

[0141] A first example fallback option is that the UE may signal the location estimate together with the location source of the computed location using non-AI / ML positioning methods, e.g., using the LocationSource information element with an explicit error indication / cause, e.g., AI / ML positioning not available. A second example fallback option is that the UE may signal the location estimate together with the location source of the computed location using non-AI / ML positioning methods, e.g., using the LocationSource information element without an explicit error indication / cause. A third example fallback option is that the UE may signal an explicit error indication / error cause in the event that both AI / ML positioning and non-AI / ML positioning are unable to provide a location estimate. For instance, location error, AI / ML positioning, and non-AI / ML positioning are not available, and the UE is unable to provide a location estimate based on AI / ML positioning or non-AI / ML positioning.

[0142] Implementations described herein also provide ground truth information request message contents. For instance, ground truth information request message contents of Step 1 of the signaling diagrams 500, 700 and Step 2 of the signaling diagrams 900, 1000 may be defined for a UE where a UE / device entity such as a target UE can trigger and initiate a request for ground truth information. The UE may further indicate preferences associated to the ground truth information within the request message. Table 5 illustrates some example message contents of a ground truth information request message. Table 5

[0143] Figure 11 illustrates an example request message 1100 for ground truth information in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure. The request message 1100, for example, represents an extension of an LPP RequestAssistanceData message format, where a new bit may be added as part of the ground truth information request. The request message 1100 includes a bit 1102 (e.g., bit 7) where a bit associated with a ground truth information request may be specified. The bit 1102 can indicate whether AI / ML ground truth information is requested (e.g., using bit set to ‘1’ ) or is not requested e.g., using bit set to ‘0’ .

[0144] Implementations also provide for ground truth information response message contents. For instance, the ground truth information response message contents of Step 2 of the signaling diagrams 500, 700 and Step 4 of the signaling diagrams 900, 1000 may be defined for a NE (e.g., LMF, NWDAF) where the NE provisions a UE / device entity such as a target UE with the requested ground truth information. Table 6 illustrates some example message contents of a ground truth information response message. Table 6

[0145] In some implementations, the ground truth information response message can also include positioning / channel measurements discussed above including associated meta information such as channel measurement quality indicators and timestamp information.

[0146] Implementations described herein also provide for PRU ground truth information, such as for multiple PRUs. For example, implementations are described to enable request and reception of location information of multiple PRUs in the vicinity of the UE / target device that may be considered as useful ground truth information. For AI / ML positioning, information generated by PRUs including positioning / channel measurements can serve as ground truth for training an AI / ML model and / or performing AI / ML model performance monitoring. In the case where performance monitoring is performed by a UE / target device, there are at least two options for ground truth information. In a first option, the UE / target device determines / receives its own location estimate with assistance from an NE (e.g., location server / LMF) via configurations used to make positioning measurements or receiving the direct location estimate as computed by the NE.In a second option, the UE / target device receives the ground truth information associated with one or more PRUs located near the UE / target device such that the location and positioning measurements do not deviate significantly due to the proximity of the UE / target device and the one or more PRUs.

[0147] In some implementations, a UE request for PRU ground truth information may be configured by enabling the UE to request specific PRUs out of a total number of PRUs (which may or may not be in proximity to the UE / target device) to provide ground truth information. This can be enabled where the UE / target device is aware of the characteristics of the PRU deployment. In one example implementation, the UE may request ground truth information from PRUs based on identifiers, e.g., PRU ID, Temporary Mobile Subscriber Identity (TMSI) , application layer ID, and so forth. Such implementations can enable the UE / target device to request and receive ground truth information associated with a group of PRUs in the vicinity of the UE / target device. The vicinity or proximity may be based on deployment and can be up to implementation to determine which PRUs are selected to be in proximity of the UE / target device. This can be implemented via requesting and receiving an index of PRUs providing ground truth information closest to the requesting UE.

[0148] Figure 12 illustrates an example PRU information response message 1200 in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure. The PRU information response message 1200, for example, includes a field 1202 and a field 1204 that enables a UE / target device to receive information about one or more PRUs that are available to provide ground truth information based on an index or list which can be requested and provided to the UE. The field 1202 can indicate the availability of one or more PRUs for obtaining ground truth information. Further, the field 1204 can specify that the each PRU within the index or list is able to provide AI / ML positioning measurement information, e.g., for the purposes of Direct AI / ML positioning or Assisted AI / ML positioning.

[0149] In some implementations, PRU measurements associated with AI / ML positioning can be included and provided to the UE / target device. In at least some aspects, the index of PRUs may be associated with an ID to differentiate the ground truth information from different PRUs, where the UE / target device may select a PRU with the ground truth information.
