Abstract
Description
AEROSOL PROVISION DEVICETechnical Field
[0001] The present invention relates to an aerosol provision device, an aerosol provision system, and a method of manufacturing an aerosol generator for an aerosol provision device. Background
[0002] Smoking articles such as cigarettes, cigars and the like burn tobacco during use to create tobacco smoke. Attempts have been made to provide alternatives to these articles by creating products that release compounds without combusting. Examples of such products are so-called “heat not burn” products or tobacco heating devices or products, which release compounds by heating, but not burning, material. The material may be, for example, tobacco or other non-tobacco products, which may or may not contain nicotine.
[0003] Aerosol provision systems, which cover the aforementioned devices or products, are known. Common systems use aerosol generators (heaters) to create an aerosol from a suitable medium which is then inhaled by a user. Often the medium used needs to be replaced or changed to provide a different aerosol for inhalation. It is known to use aerosol generators in the form of resistive heating systems as heaters to create an aerosol from a suitable medium.Summary

The article receiving portion 240 comprises an article-gripping portion 246 at a proximal end 240p of the article receiving potion 240. The article-gripping portion 246 comprises one or more protrusions which extend into the cavity inside the article receiving portion 240. The article-gripping portion 246 may be manufactured from a material with a high coefficient of friction, e.g. a silicone rubber. The outer surface 250a of the article 250 is gripped by the article-gripping portion 246 when the article 250 is received by the article receiving portion 240. The contact between the outer surface 250a of the article 250 and the article gripping portion 246 may help to secure the position of the article 250 when it has been fully received in the article receiving portion 240.
[0135] Having more than one vibration sensor may increase the sensing accuracy and / or reliability of the article insertion detection arrangement 270, whilst reducing the number of vibration sensors may increase the cost of manufacturing the device 200. The device 210 further comprises an air inlet 211, and air flow into the device is show with arrow A.
[0136] In other embodiments, the air inlet is provided at an alternative location within the device, for example air can be drawn into the device through the article receiving opening 204, or through side air inlets.
[0137] In some embodiments, the device 200 may include an indication device which may provide an indication to a user. The indication device may, in embodiments, comprise one or more of: a light (e.g. at least one Light Emitting Diode, LED) , a display, an audio device, or a haptic device.
[0138] The inductive element 262 may form part of a resonant circuit. In some embodiments, the device 200 may comprise one or more inductive elements. The or each inductive element 262 may comprise a helical inductor coil. In one example, the helical inductor coil is made from Litz wire / cable which is wound in a helical fashion to provide the helical inductor coil. In other embodiments, other types are inductor elements are provided, as inductors formed within a printed circuit board. The inductive elements may be the same or similar.
[0139] The aerosol generator 260 of the aerosol provision system 200 includes a susceptor 264 provided within the article receiving portion 240, such that when the article 250 is inserted into the article receiving portion 240 it is at least partially surrounded by the susceptor 264.
[0140] In use, the article 250 is received in the article receiving portion 240. The inductive element 262 surrounds the susceptor 264. The inductive element 262 induces a varying magnetic field in the susceptor 264, which causes heating of the susceptor 264. The susceptor 264 in turn heats aerosol generating material in the article 250.
[0141] The device 200 comprises an article insertion detection arrangement 270. The article insertion detection arrangement 270 comprises a first vibration sensor 272 and a second vibration sensor 274. The first vibration sensor 272 is mounted to the wall of the article receiving portion at a location adjacent to the expansion chamber 244. In other words, the first vibration sensor 272 is located at the proximal end 240p of the article receiving potion 240. The first vibration sensor 272 may be located between 5mm and 15mm from the opening in the device housing at the proximal end 240p of the article receiving portion 240, for example, the first vibration sensor 272 may be located at approximately 10mm from the opening in the device housing at the proximal end 240p of the article receiving portion 240.
[0142] The first vibration sensor 272 may be mounted adjacent to the article-gripping portion 246. As the article 250 is inserted or removed from the article receiving portion 240, an increased frictional force may be created between the article 250 and the article receiving portion 240 at the article-gripping portion 246. Therefore, locating the sensor adjacent to the article-gripping portion 246 may result in a more pronounced output signal from the vibration sensor 272 as the article is inserted into the article receiving portion 240.
[0143] The second vibration sensor 274 is located at a distal end 211d of the air inlet 211. It will be appreciated that the second vibration sensor 274 may be located at another location within the device, for example at a distal end of the article receiving portion. In some embodiments the control arrangement 220 comprises a printed circuit board located in the device 200 adjacent to the distal end 211d of the air inlet 211. The second vibration sensor 274 may be mounted on the printed circuit board. This may reduce the number of additional components required to implement the second vibration sensor 274.
[0144] Positioning each of the first vibration sensor 272 and the second vibration sensor 274 at respective locations which are physically separated from the heating chamber may reduce the operational temperature at the respective mounting positions. The operational temperature may typically be less than 120 degrees Celsius at each of the positions of the first vibration sensor 272 and second vibration sensor 274 when the susceptor 264 is heated during use. This may improve the performance of the vibration sensors 272 and 274, and may reduce the cost of the components of the vibration sensors 272, 274 by reducing the temperature they are designed to operate in.
[0145] It is envisaged that in some examples one or more of the vibration sensors 272, 274 could be integral within the inner wall 250a of the article receiving portion 250.
[0146] The use of two vibration sensors is not essential to all example embodiments. In some embodiments, only one vibration sensor is provided. Thus, the aerosol provision device 200 may comprise one or more vibration sensors. Having more than one vibration sensor may increase the sensing accuracy and / or reliability of the article insertion detection arrangement 270, whilst reducing the number of vibration sensors may increase the cost of manufacturing the device 200.
[0147] It will be appreciated that in other embodiments the one or more vibration sensors may be located in any suitable location within the device housing.
[0148] The vibration sensor (s) is configured to sense vibration of the article receiving portion 240 as the article 250 is inserted and / or removed into the article receiving portion 240. In some examples, the article 250 makes contact with the wall of the article receiving portion 240 as it is inserted and / or removed. In some examples, the article 250 makes contact with the article-gripping portion 246 of the article receiving portion 240 as it is inserted and / or removed.
[0149] Each vibration sensor 272, 274 may be a bone-conduction sensor, a voice pick-up sensor, or a microphone. The output of each vibration sensor may be communicatively coupled with the control arrangement 220.
[0150] The output of each of the vibration sensors 272, 274 may have a frequency bandwidth greater than 500Hz, e.g. greater than 1 kHz. Having a greater sensing bandwidth may increase the sensitivity of the vibration sensors 272, 274. Furthermore, having a greater sensing bandwidth may allow the vibration sensors 272, 274 to capture a more detailed characteristic output signal as the article 250 makes contact with the article receiving portion 240. This may help the control arrangement to not only determine that an article 250 is being received by the article receiving portion 240, but identify the article 250 being received by the article receiving portion 240 based on a characteristic output signal from the vibration sensors 22, 274. This is described in more detail below with reference to Figure 7.
[0151] Figure 2b shows another embodiment of the aerosol provision system 200. In this embodiment, most of the components are the same as outlined with respect to Figure 2a and the same reference numerals are used. However, in Figure 2b, the aerosol generator 260 comprises a susceptor 264 provided in the article 250. The susceptor 264 is embedded in the aerosol generating material 254.
[0152] The aerosol provision device 210 of Figure 2b includes an article detection arrangement 270, comprising a single vibration sensor 272. The vibration sensor 272 is provided at a proximal end 240p of the article receiving portion 240. However, it will be appreciated that in other embodiments, the vibration sensor may be located at a different position in the aerosol provision device.
[0153] Figure 3a shows another aerosol provision system 300. The system 300 comprises many of the same features as the system 200 described above in relation to Figure 1a, and like reference numerals are used for features which are common both to the aerosol provision system 200 of Figure 1a, and the aerosol provision system 300 of Figure 3a. The aerosol provision system 300 differs from the aerosol provision system 200 in that the aerosol provision system 300 is arranged to heat the article 250 using resistive heating, whilst, as discussed above, the aerosol provision system 200 is arranged to heat the article 250 using inductive heating.
[0154] Figure 3a shows a cross-sectional schematic view of an embodiment of an aerosol provision system 300 comprising an aerosol provision device 310 and an article 250. The aerosol provision device comprises a power source 205, a controller 220 and an article receiving portion 240, which may be referred to as a heating chamber, in which the article 250 is removably received.
[0155] The one-piece device of Figure 3 shows the power source 210 aligned along the longitudinal axis of the heating chamber 201. In another embodiment of a one-piece aerosol provision device, the power source is aligned along a second longitudinal axis, parallel to the longitudinal axis of the heating chamber.
[0156] In this embodiment, the aerosol provision device is provided with an aerosol generator 360 in the form of a pin.
[0157] In other embodiments, the aerosol generator 360 may comprise other elongate configurations, and can have a variety of cross-sectional shapes, for example oval, hexagonal, pentagonal, octagonal.
[0158] The aerosol generator 360 is provided in a heating chamber area of the aerosol receiving portion 240. The aerosol generator 360 extends or projects into the heating chamber.
[0159] The device 310 comprises an article insertion detection arrangement 270. The article insertion detection 270 arrangement comprises a first vibration sensor 272 and a second vibration sensor 274. The first vibration sensor 272 is mounted to the wall of the proximal end of the article receiving portion 240. The second vibration sensor 274 is mounted to the wall at the distal end of the article receiving portion 240.
[0160] The aerosol generator 360 may be inserted, in use, into a distal end of the aerosol generating article 250 which is received within the heating chamber in order to internally heat the aerosol generating material 254 in the aerosol generating article 250. This type of aerosol generator can be referred to as an internal aerosol generator or internal heater.
[0161] Figure 3b shows a cross-sectional schematic view of another embodiment of the aerosol provision system 301. The aerosol provision device 311 is located in a charging unit 80. The aerosol provision device 311 comprises a power source 205, a controller 220 and an aerosol receiving portion defining a heating chamber, in which the aerosol generating article 250 is removeable received. The aerosol provision device 311 comprises an aerosol generator 360 in the form of a pin, which in use is inserted into a distal end of the aerosol generating article 250 which is received within the heating chamber in order to internally heat the aerosol generating material 254 in the article 250.
[0162] The device 311 comprises an article insertion detection arrangement 270. The article insertion detection 270 arrangement comprises a vibration sensor 272 which is mounted to the wall of the proximal end of the article receiving portion 240.
[0163] In other embodiments, the device comprises an article gripping portion (as described above) and the vibration sensor is provided at a location adjacent to the article-gripping portion.
[0164] Figure 3c shows an embodiment of an aerosol generator 360 for use in an aerosol provision device, such as those as described above in Figures 3a and 3b. The aerosol generator 360 comprises an elongate housing 361 and a heating element 350.
[0165] It will be appreciated that in use the elongate housing physically isolates / protects the heating element 350 from the aerosol generating article 250.
[0166] In this embodiment, the elongate housing defines a longitudinal axis. The elongate housing 361 has a base end 361a and a free end 361 b. The base end 361a mounts to the device body. The elongate housing 361 is tubular. In other embodiments, the elongate housing may have a variety of cross-sectional shapes, such as but not limited to, circular, elliptical, rectangular, pentagonal, hexagonal, octagonal.
[0167] The elongate housing 361 comprises an inner void (or cavity) 365. The free end 361 b of the elongate housing extends towards the proximal end of the heating chamber. The free end 361 b is closed, in other words, the inner void does not extend through the free end. A tip 366 is provided at the free end. The tip 366 extends to an apex. Other shapes and configurations of the tip may be provided, for example the tip may define a planar surface.
[0168] The aerosol generator 360 comprises electrical connection paths 369. The electrical connection paths extend from each end of the heating element 350.
[0169] Figure 4a shows another aerosol provision system 400 which is arranged heat the article 250 using resistive heating. The aerosol provision system 400 comprises an aerosol provision device 410 for generating aerosol from an aerosol generating material, and the aerosol generating article 250 comprising the aerosol generating material. The device 410 can be used to heat the aerosol generating article 250 comprising the aerosol generating material 254, to generate an aerosol or other inhalable medium which can be inhaled by a user of the device 410.
[0170] The device 410 comprises an outer housing 221 which surrounds and houses various components of the device 410. The device 200 has an opening 204 in one end, through which the article 250 can be inserted for heating by the device 200.
[0171] The aerosol provision device 210 may further comprise an activation switch 212 (not shown) that may be used for switching on or switching off the aerosol provision device 210. In other embodiments, the device does not include an activation switch 212 and a pressure trigger or some other activation-on-demand arrangement may be provided.
[0172] The aerosol provision device 410 comprises a power source 205, a controller 220 and an article receiving portion 240, which may be referred to as a heating chamber, in which the article 250 is removably received.
[0173] In this embodiment, the aerosol provision device 410 is provided with an external aerosol generator 460 comprising a coil. The aerosol generator 460 surrounds the article receiving portion 240.
[0174] The aerosol provision device 410 includes an article detection 270 arrangement, comprising a single vibration sensor 272. It will be appreciated that in other embodiments, the vibration sensor 272 may be located at a different position in the aerosol provision device. In use, the aerosol generating article 250 is inserted into the aerosol receiving portion 240, and the aerosol generator 460 surrounds the inserted end of the article 250 in order to externally heat the aerosol generating article 250.
[0175] Figure 4b shows an embodiment of an external aerosol generator 460 for use in an aerosol provision device, such as that described in relation to Figure 4a. The aerosol generator 460 comprises a heating element 450 in the form of a helical coil. The heating element 450 surrounds the aerosol receiving portion 240. In this embodiment, the coil has a circular cross-sectional profile. The aerosol receiving portion 240 is provided radially inward of the helical coil, such that it provides a barrier to protect the heating element from interaction with the article when it is inserted into the aerosol receiving portion (also referred to as the heating chamber) .
[0176] The aerosol generator comprises an insulation layer is 458 which is provided radially externally of the heating element 450.
[0177] In other embodiments, the insulation layer may be omitted or may be provided as part of the aerosol provision device (not part of the aerosol generator) .
[0178] In other embodiments, two radiating or more heating elements are provided. The two or more heating elements may be configured to operate simultaneously or sequentially.
[0179] Figure 4c shows another embodiment of an external aerosol generator 560 comprising a heating element 550 in the form of a film heater. It will be appreciated that the aerosol generator may also comprise an insulation layer 458 which is provided radially externally of the heating element 550.
[0180] The film heater 550 has high tensile strength and high resistance to tearing. The film heater 550 has a small thickness, such as less than 1 mm, which can contribute significantly in reducing the size of the aerosol generator. The film heater may be a polyamide heater, such as, but not limited to a polyimide heater. Other materials could alternatively be used.
[0181] The heating element 550 may comprise a plurality of axially aligned heating regions 551 in a substantially elongate arrangement. The regions 551 may each comprise an individual element of the heating element 550. The heating regions 550 may, for example, all be aligned with each other along a longitudinal axis of the heating element 550, thus providing a plurality of independent heating zones along the length of the heating element 550. In the example shown in Figure 4c the heating regions 551 are geometrically arranged so that different ones of the heating regions 551 are arranged to predominately and independently heat different regions of the article 250.
[0182] The heating element as described in any other embodiments of the aerosol generator may also comprise a plurality of individual heating regions.
[0183] The heating regions may be operable independently of one another so that different regions can be activated at different times to heat the article 250.
[0184] In other embodiments, the resistive aerosol generator of the aerosol provision system is a part of the aerosol generating article, rather than being a part of the aerosol provision device. The heating element is embedded within portion of the article comprising the aerosol generating material. It will be appreciated that this arrangement can also be considered as an internal aerosol generator.
[0185] The heating element may be a resistive heating element, for example in the form of the resistive coil described above, which is provided as part of the aerosol generating article. Electrical connections may be provided on the aerosol generating article, configured to couple with respective electrical connections in the aerosol provision device. The electrical coupling between the article and the aerosol provision device may enable electric current to flow from a power source in the aerosol provision device to the resistive heating element.
[0186] As depicted in the Figures above, the devices 210, 310, 311, and 410 respectively each include a control arrangement 220. The control arrangement 220 may comprise a controller. The control arrangement 220 is arranged to determine when the article is being received by the article receiving portion based on an output from the one or more vibration sensors discussed above.
[0187] The control arrangement 220 may be further arranged to determine that the article is fully received by the article receiving portion based on an output from the one or more vibration sensors. Fully received may comprise the article being inserted into the article receiving portion to a maximum extent. (this may include at least part of the article extending out of the article receiving portion, e.g. a mouthpiece thereof, as can be seen in Figure 1a and 1 b) .
[0188] As described herein, control of the aerosol provision device 210 is realised using the control arrangement 220. In other embodiments however, one or more processing or control steps may be performed by entities remote from the aerosol provision device 210. For example, the control arrangement 220 may be configured to communicate (e.g. wirelessly) with a further element such as a smartphone or remote server.
[0189] Following detection that the article 250 is being received by the article receiving portion 240, the device 200, e.g. the control arrangement 120 thereof, may be configured to perform a particular control action. For example, following detection that the article 250 is fully received by the article receiving portion 240, it may cause the supply of electrical power to the heating elements to heat the article 250. In some embodiments, the device 200 may include an indication device which in embodiments may comprise one or more of a display, an audio device, or a haptic device. In embodiments, the control action may comprise providing an indication to a user that the article is partially inserted when the device is being received by the article receiving portion 240. The control action may further comprise providing an indication to a user when the device is fully received by the article receiving portion 240.
[0190] Figure 5 is a first flow chart illustrating a method 500 of operating an aerosol provision device. The aerosol provision device referred to in the method of Figure 5 may be an aerosol provision device such as those as described above.
[0191] At step 501, it is determined (e.g. by the control arrangement 220) whether the article 250 is fully received within the article receiving portion 240, this determination is made based on the output of the sensor discussed above. If the article 250 is not fully received in the article receiving portion 240 then the method returns to step 501. If the article 250 is fully received in the article receiving portion 240, then the method proceeds to step 503, where a control action is performed. In embodiments, the control action may comprise providing an indication to a user that the article 250 is fully received in the article receiving portion 240. The indication may be provided to the user via an indication device. The indication device may comprise one or more of, an audio device, a display, a light, or a haptic device. In embodiments, the control action may comprise the supplying of electrical power to the heating elements. It will be understood that, at step 503, a plurality of control actions may be performed.
[0192] The device may further be configured to sense vibration of the article receiving portion as the article is removed, after use, from the article receiving portion. The device (e.g. the control arrangement) may be arranged to determine when the article is being removed, and / or has been removed from the article receiving portion based on an output from the vibration sensor. Following a determination that the article 250 is being removed or has been removed from the article receiving portion 240, the device 200, e.g. the control arrangement 120 thereof, may be configured to perform a second control action, which may be different to the first control action. For example, it may stop the supply of electrical power to the heating elements to heat the article 250 when it is determined that the article is being removed. This may improve the safety and / or reduce the power usage of the device by preventing the supply of electrical power when there is no article to heat in the article receiving portion, or when the article has started to be removed.
[0193] In some embodiments, the device 210, 310, 311, 410 may include an indication device which in embodiments may comprise one or more of a display, an audio device, or a haptic device. In embodiments, the control action may comprise providing an indication to a user that the article has been partially being removed when it determines that the article is being removed from the article receiving portion. The control action may comprise providing an indication to a user the article has been removed when the article has been removed from the article receiving portion.
[0194] Figure 6 is a second flow chart illustrating a method 500 of operating an aerosol provision device 210, 310, 311, 410.
[0195] At step 601, it is determined (e.g. by the control arrangement 220) whether the article 250 is being removed from the article receiving portion 240, this determination is made based on the output of the vibration sensor discussed above. If the article 250 is not being removed from the article receiving portion 240-e.g. it remains in a position where it is fully received by the article receiving portion 240, then the method returns to step 601. If the article 250 is being removed from the article receiving portion 240, then the method proceeds to step 503, where a second control action is performed. In embodiments, the second control action may comprise providing an indication to a user that the article 250 is being removed from the article receiving portion 240. The indication may be provided to the user via an indication device. The indication device may comprise one or more of, an audio device, a display, a light, or a haptic device. In embodiments, the control action may comprise stopping supplying of electrical power to the heating elements. It will be understood that, at step 603, a plurality of control actions may be performed.
[0196] The device (e.g. the control arrangement 220) may be further configured to identify whether an authorised article is received by the article receiving portion. Performance of the control action following determination that the article is full received may be dependent on the additional determination that the article is authorised. For example, electrical power may not be supplied to the heating elements unless the article is fully received by the article receiving portion and the article is authorised. This may prevent power from being supplied to an object which is not an authorised article, e.g. an object which is elongate, but does not comprise aerosol-generating material, or an article comprising aerosol-generating material that is not compatible with the device.
[0197] It is envisaged means such as near-field communication between the article and the device, or other sensing means could be used to identify whether an authorised article is received by the article receiving portion. However, in embodiments, the device (e.g. the control arrangement 220 thereof) is configured to determine whether the article is an authorised article based on the output signal from the vibration sensor 272, 274. This may reduce the number of sensors provided as part of the device, which could in turn simplify the manufacturing process and / or reduce costs. The sensor may output a first signal when a non-authorised article is received in the article receiving portion, and / or when an object other than an article is received in the article receiving portion; and / or when an authorised article is not fully received within the article receiving portion. The sensor may output a second signal, different to the first signal, when an authorised article is received by the article receiving portion.
[0198] Figure 7 is a third flow chart illustrating a method 500 of operating an aerosol provision device 210, 310, 311, 410.
[0199] With reference to Figure 7, in step 701, the output from the vibration sensor is received, e.g. by the control arrangement 220. The output signal may then be compared to one or more reference signals (e.g. empirically determined reference signals) at step 702. Each of the one or more reference signals may correspond to expected outputs of the vibration sensor 272 when different respective known authorised articles are inserted into the device. These reference signals may be stored in the device, e.g. the control arrangement 220 may comprise memory in which the reference signals are stored. The one or more reference signals may comprise at least a first reference signal corresponding to an authorised article being received by the article receiving portion, and may further comprise at least a second reference signal corresponding to a non-authorised object received by the article receiving portion. The device (e.g. the control arrangement) may then determine whether the article is authorised in step 703 based on the comparison in step 702.
[0200] If the article 250 is determined to be an authorised article (an it is determined that the article is fully received) , then the method proceeds to step 705, where a first control action is performed. The first control action may comprise the supplying of electrical power to the heating elements and / or providing an indication to the user that the article has been fully received and is authorised. It will be understood that, at step 705, a plurality of control actions may be performed. If the article 250 is determined to be unauthorised, the device (e.g. by the indication device described above) provides an indication to a user that the article 250 is fully received in the article receiving portion 240.
