[0004] The present disclosure relates to laminating machines, and particularly to a laminating arrangement. The present disclosure further concerns a method for manufacturing a top-coated laminate.

[0006] Laminating machines may be used for applying coatings and laminates on to different kinds of base materials. When large volumes of materials are laminated, continuous rolls of materials are typically used. Laminating machines may be used for instance for producing pressure-sensitive labels and flexible packaging, where top-coated face material is laminated to a base material. Such machines enable uniform application of coatings and laminates at high speeds. Top coating of especially thin filmic materials is very delicate process, which typically causes runnability challenges and risk of coating defects. To reduce these problems, top coating, such as varnishing, especially top coating of pressure sensitive label materials, may be done for instance by coating the face material off-line in a separate coating machine before lamination process. This, however, does not completely remove the challenges of top coating thin filmic materials, and it adds an additional step to the process.

[0008] An object of the present disclosure is to provide a new laminating arrangement and a new method for manufacturing top-coated laminate.

[0020] DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DISCLOSURE

[0021] The disclosure relates to laminating. More particularly, the disclosure relates to laminating continuous lengths, such as rolls, of at least two materials to each other.

[0022] Figures 3 and 4 illustrate schematically different embodiments of a structure of a top-coated laminate produced by a laminating arrangement. Figures 1 and 2 illustrate schematically laminating arrangements according to different embodiments.

[0023] A laminating arrangement 1 for manufacturing a top-coated laminate 7, such as the laminating arrangement 1 of Figure 1 or Figure 2, comprises a first unwinder 2 for unwinding a first material layer 3, and a second unwinder 11 for unwinding a second material layer 12. The top-coated laminate 7 may comprise for instance the top-coated laminate 7 of Figure 3 or Figure 4. The first unwinder 2 may be arranged to unwind the first material layer 3, such as to unwind the first material layer 3 from a first roll 20. In each case, however, the first material layer 3 has two surfaces: the surface facing the second material layer 12 and the surface facing away from the second material layer 12, on which the top coating layer 17 is provided. Two different embodiments of a top-coated laminate 7 with a top coating layer 17, a first material layer 3, and a second material layer 12 are, thus, shown in Figures 3 and 4, but it is clear for a person skilled in the art that top-coated laminates 7 of other embodiments may also have further layers not shown in these figures. Such further layers, if any, may comprise, depending on the embodiment, for instance a primer and / or a barrier coating.

CLAIMS1. A laminating arrangement for manufacturing a top-coated laminate, wherein the laminating arrangement comprises a first unwinder for unwinding a first material layer, a second unwinder for unwinding a second material layer, a laminating nip for laminating the first material layer to the second material layer, and a rewinder for winding the laminate, wherein the laminating arrangement further comprises a first coating unit for providing a top coating layer onto a surface of the first material layer facing away from the second material layer, which first coating unit is provided in-line in the laminating arrangement downstream from the laminating nip and upstream from the rewinder, and a second coating unit for providing a second coating onto at least a surface of the second material layer facing towards the first material layer, which second coating unit is provided upstream from the laminating nip.

2. A laminating arrangement according to claim 1, wherein the first coating unit comprises a top coating apparatus.

3. A laminating arrangement according to claim 2, wherein the first coating unit further comprises a top coating drying apparatus provided downstream from the top coating apparatus.

A laminating arrangement according to any one of claims 1 - 3, wherein the laminating arrangement comprises a laminating arrangement for manufacturing a self-adhesive top-coated laminate, wherein the second coating unit comprises an adhesive unit for providing an adhesive layer on a surface of the second material layer facing towards the first material layer after laminating the first material layer and the second material layer together, wherein the adhesive unit comprises an adhesive coating apparatus.

5. A laminating arrangement according to claim 4, wherein the adhesive unit further comprises an adhesive drying apparatus.

6. A laminating arrangement according to any one of claims 1 - 5, wherein the second coating unit comprises a release coating unit for providing arelease coating layer on a surface of the second material layer, wherein the release coating unit comprises at least a release coating apparatus.

7. A laminating arrangement according to claim 6, wherein the laminating arrangement comprises the laminating arrangement for manufacturing a self-adhesive top-coated laminate, wherein the second coating unit comprises both the adhesive unit and the release coating unit, and wherein the release coating unit is provided upstream from the adhesive unit, whereby the release coating layer is provided between the second material layer and the adhesive layer.

8. A laminating arrangement according to any one of the claims 1 - 7, wherein in the first coating unit, the second material layer is provided on top side of the laminate and the first material layer is on the bottom side of the laminate, and wherein the top coating layer is provided onto the surface of the first material layer facing away from the second material layer from below the laminate.

9. A laminating arrangement according to any one of claims 1 - 8, wherein at least the first material layer comprises at least one of polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), or polyester (PET).

10. A laminating arrangement according to any one of claims 1 - 9, wherein the top coating comprises at least one of a varnish or a pigment coating.

11. A laminating arrangement according to any one of claims 1 - 10, wherein at least the first material layer comprises paper.

12. A method for manufacturing a top-coated laminate, characterized in that the method comprises manufacturing the top-coated laminate by a laminating arrangement according to any one of claims 1 - 11.

13. A method according to claim 12, wherein the method comprises unwinding the first material layer from the first unwinder, unwinding the second material layer from the second unwinder, providing the second coating onto at least one surface of the secondmaterial layer by the second coating unit, which second coating unit is provided upstream from the laminating nip, laminating the first material layer to the second material layer by the laminating nip, providing the top coating layer onto the surface of the first material layer facing away from the second material layer by the first coating unit, and winding the laminate by the rewinder, wherein the first coating unit is provided in-line in the laminating arrangement downstream from the laminating nip and upstream from the rewinder, whereby the laminate is in-line top-coated between the laminating nip and the rewinder.

14. A method according to claim 13, wherein providing the top coating layer onto the surface of the first material layer comprises providing a top coating onto the surface of the first material layer by the top coating apparatus and drying the top coating by the top coating drying apparatus provided downstream from the top coating apparatus.

15. A method according to any one of claims 12 - 14, wherein the method comprises a method for manufacturing a self-adhesive top-coated laminate; wherein the second coating unit comprises the adhesive unit; and wherein providing the second coating onto at least one surface of the second material layer comprises providing the adhesive layer on the surface of the second material layer facing towards the first material layer after laminating the first material layer and the second material layer together by the adhesive coating apparatus.

16. A method according to claim 15, wherein the method further comprises drying the adhesive layer by the adhesive drying apparatus.

17. A method according to any one of claims 12 - 16, wherein the method further comprises providing the release coating layer on the surface of the second material layer.

18. A method according to claim 17, wherein the method comprises a method for manufacturing a self-adhesive topcoated laminate, wherein the second coating unit comprises both the adhesive unit and the release coating unit, and wherein the release coating unit is provided upstream from the adhesive unit, whereby the method comprises providing the release coating layer between the second material layer and the adhesive layer.

19. A method according to any one of the claims 12 - 18, wherein the method comprises providing, in the first coating unit, the second material layer on the top side of the laminate and the first material layer on the bottom side of the laminate, and wherein the method comprises providing the first coating layer onto the surface of the first material layer facing away from the second material layer from below the laminate.

20. A method according to any one of claims 12 - 20, wherein at least the first material layer comprises at least one of polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), or polyethylene terephthalate (PET).

21. A method according to any one of claims 12 - 20, wherein at least the first material layer comprises paper.
