Description

INTRAORAL IMAGING DEVICEFIELD

[0001] Embodiments of the present disclosure generally relate to the field of intraoral scanning and, in particular, to an intraoral imaging device.BACKGROUND

[0002] In prosthodontic procedures, a prosthesis such as a crown, or a denture, should be properly designed and dimensioned to fit in place. In order to implant a dental prosthesis in the oral cavity properly, the dental site at which the prosthesis is to be implanted should be measured accurately. An intraoral scanner is increasingly used for intraoral measurement. A typical intraoral scanner generally uses active structured light or confocal light to generate 3D images. When an active structured light is used for intraoral imaging, one or more optics lenses for imaging should be fixed within the intraoral scanner in position in a robust way.

[0003] Positions of the optics lens will directly affect reconstruction of depth information and thus affect imaging quality. Conventional means for fixing optics lenses to the scanner is not satisfactory in particular after long time use. During use of the intraoral scanner, the optics lenses is prone to slight displacement relative to a fixed part in the scanner. Any tiny slight displacement of the optics lenses will lead to a decrease in the accuracy of oral scanning, which is unacceptable for oral scanning.SUMMARY

[0004] Example embodiments of the present disclosure provide an intraoral imaging device of which mitigates or obviates one or more above mentioned problems.

[0015] In some embodiments, the device may further comprise an adhesive arranged in the groove for adhering the optical lens to the base.

[0016] In a second aspect of the present disclosure, there is provided a method of fixing an optical lens to an intraoral imaging device. The method comprises: providing a base comprising a groove with one side open; placing an optical lens in the groove; adjusting a position of the optical lens in the groove along an optical axis to meet imaging requirements; and pressing the adjusted optical lens with a pressing element on a side opposite to the groove.

[0017] In some embodiments, the method may further comprise fixing the pressing element to the base by a screw fastener.

[0018] In some embodiments, the groove may comprise: a first positioning surface on a first side of the groove, configured to contact a first portion of the optical lens to form a first contact point when the optical lens is received in the groove; and a second positioning surface on a second side opposite to the first side, configured to contact a second portion of the optical lens to form a second contact point when the optical lens is received in the groove; wherein the first contact point, the second contact point and a center of gravity of the optical lens form a triangle.

[0019] In some embodiments, the pressing element may be an elastic sheet, and the method further comprises pre-deforming the elastic sheet and pressing the optical lens with the pre-deformed elastic sheet.

[0020] It would be appreciated that this summary is not intended to identify key features or essential features of embodiments of the present disclosure, nor is it intended to be used to limit the scope of the present disclosure. Other features of the present disclosure will become evident through the following description.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0029] Principles of the present disclosure will now be described with reference to several example embodiments shown in the drawings. Though example embodiments of the present disclosure are illustrated in the drawings, it is to be understood that the embodiments are described only to facilitate those skilled in the art in better understanding and thereby achieving the present disclosure, rather than to limit the scope of the disclosure in any manner.

[0030] The term “comprises” or “includes” and its variants are to be read as open terms that mean “includes, but is not limited to. ” The term “or” is to be read as “and / or” unless the context clearly indicates otherwise. The term “based on” is to be read as “based at least in part on. ” The term “being operable to” is to mean a function, an action, a motion or a state that can be achieved by an operation induced by a user or an external mechanism. The term “one embodiment” and “an embodiment” are to be read as “at least one embodiment. ” The term “another embodiment” is to be read as “at least one other embodiment. ” The terms “first, ” “second, ” and the like may refer to different or same objects. Other definitions, explicit and implicit, may be included below. A definition of a term is consistent throughout the description unless the context clearly indicates otherwise.

[0031] Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an intraoral imaging device 100 according to one example embodiment of the present disclosure. As shown in Fig. 1, the intraoral imaging device 100 comprises a housing 120 and a scanning head 110 attached to one end of the housing 120. The housing 120 may be in form of a handle which facilitate handling of the device and various function components, such as optical components, light source, imaging sensors, and the associated electrical circuits, may be housed within the housing. Buttons and / or controls may be provided on the housing. The scanning head 110 may extend in a lengthwise direction and is dimensioned to be inserted into user’s mouth. The scanning head 110 may be configured to guide the light from the light source in the housing into the teeth or gingival tissue 200. The scanning head 110 is also configured to guide the reflected light from the teeth or gingival tissue 200 back to the imaging sensors in the housing. During operation of the device, the scanning head 110 may be partially placed in the user’s mouth and get closes to the teeth. As the scanning head 110 moves in the mouth, the reflected light signals from teeth are used to reconstruct 3D dimensions of the teeth.

[0032] Fig. 2 is an explosive view of an intraoral imaging device 100 according to one example embodiment of the present disclosure. As shown in Fig. 2, the housing 120 may include an upper housing 120a and a lower housing 120b. Various functional components may be arranged within the housing 120. In many applications, structural illumination is used for 3D dental imaging. The structural illumination may include a projector system configured to project light onto the teeth and an imaging system configured sense the  reflected light from the teeth. In some embodiments, as shown in Fig. 2, the projector system is configured to generate and project structural lights. The projector system may include a light source, a digital micromirror device DMD 133 configured to modulate the light from the light source and to transmit the modulated light to the projector lens 132 configured to calibrate the modulated light. The imaging system may include an imaging lens 134 configured to calibrate the reflected light from the dental tissues and an imaging sensor 135. The reflected structural light goes through the imaging lens 134 and are converted into digital signal by the imaging sensor 135 which is further processed to reconstruct the dental 3D image. Positions of the projector lens 132 and the imaging lens 134 directly affect imaging quality. Thus, in process of assembling the intraoral imaging device 100, the projector lens 132 and the imaging lens 134 should be calibrated in order to ensure their imaging function. Once the projector lens 132 and the imaging lens 134 are calibrated, the projector lens 132 and the imaging lens 134 are fixed, for example, to a base 140 which may be fixedly attached to the housing 120. However, conventional means for fixing optics lenses 132, 134 is not satisfactory. That is because after long-term use of the intraoral scanner, the optics lenses are prone to slight displacement and any tiny slight displacement of the optics lenses will lead to a decrease in imaging accuracy. There is a need to improve fixing strength of the lenses 132, 134.

[0033] Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of a base 140 of the intraoral imaging device according to one example embodiment of the present disclosure. In the shown embodiment, the base 140 is a separate component from the housing 120. In some other embodiments, the base 140 may be part of the housing 120. The base may be provided with one or more open grooves. One side of the groove is open and the opposite sides of the groove are configured to support one or more lenses. A pressing element is also provided and configured to press a top side of the lens.

[0034] In some embodiments, as shown in Fig. 3, the base 140 may include a first groove 142 and a second groove 144. The projector lens 132 may be arranged within the first groove 142 and the imaging lens 134 may be arranged within the second groove 144. The grooves 142, 144 may extend in optical axis direction and are open at one side. The grooves 142, 144 are shaped to support the lenses 132, 134. In the shown example, there are two parallel grooves 142, 144 for receiving the lenses 132, 134 respectively. It is to be understood that the shown example is merely illustrative and in some examples (not  shown) , there may be one groove for receiving one of the lenses 132, 134 and the other lens may be fixed to the housing by other manners. For example, the other lens is directly fixed to the housing via an adhesive. The open arrangement of the groove is advantageous since it may facilitate calibrating of the projector lens 132 and the imaging lens 134, for example, by adjusting their positions along the optical axis direction. Once the projector lens 132 and the imaging lens 134 are calibrated, the projector lens 132 and the imaging lens 134 may be further held by at least one pressing element 150 on a side opposite to the groove 142, 144. The pressing element 150 may be of various forms as long as the pressing element 150 can apply pressing force onto the projector lens 132 and the imaging lens 134.

[0035] Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view of an arrangement for fixing a lens to a base of the intraoral imaging device according to a first example embodiment of the present disclosure. As shown in Fig. 4, the groove 142 may be formed as a circular groove. Its size is slightly larger than the outer diameter of the lens 132, which makes it possible for free movement of the lens 132 along the optic axis direction. A bottom side of the lens 132 is supported by the groove 142 and a top side of the lens 132 is pressed by a pressing element 150. The pressing element 150 is shaped to apply pressing force against the lens 132 so as to fix the lens 132 in position. Likewise, the groove 144 is also formed as a circular groove. The size of the groove 144 allows the lens 134 to move along the optic axis. On a top side of the lens 134, the pressing element 150 is provided and is configured to apply pressing force against the lens 134 so as to fix the lens 132 in position. In the shown example, the groove 142 and the groove 144 are of different depth but of substantially the same configuration. It is to be understood that the shown example is merely illustrative and the groove 142 and the groove 144 may be of different configuration.

[0036] In the shown example, the pressing element 150 includes a first thinner end 152 and a second thicker end 154. The thinner end 152 is shaped to press the projector lens 132 of a larger diameter and the second thicker end 154 is shaped to press the imaging lens 134 of a smaller diameter. The lenses 132, 134 thus are held by a single pressing element 150. It is to be understood that there may be more than one pressing elements for fixing the lenses. In some embodiments, an adhesive may also be provided between the lenses 132, 134 and the grooves. The adhesive may further improve fixing strength of the  lens. Even if the adhesive ages after long time use, the lenses 132, 134 can be fixed in position within the groove.

[0037] Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view of an arrangement for fixing the lens to a base of the intraoral imaging device according to a second example embodiment of the present disclosure. As shown in Fig. 5, the groove 142 may be formed as a non-circular groove. The groove 142 may comprise a first positioning surface 1421 on a first side of the groove 142 and a second positioning surface 1422, 1442 on a second side opposite to the first side. When the optical lens 13 is received in the groove 142, the first positioning surface 1421 contacts a first portion of the optical lens 132 to form a first contact point and the second positioning surface 1422 contacts a second portion of the optical lens 132 to form a second contact point. When the optical lens 13 is received in the groove 142 in position, the first contact point, the second contact point and a center of gravity of the optical lens 132 may form a triangle. Triangle support may further improve structural stability. Even if the optical lens 132, 134 are subject to larger vibrations, the optical lens 13 can be stably fixed within the groove.

[0038] In some embodiments, as shown in Fig. 5, the groove 142 is formed as a trapezoidal shape. Each side of the groove 142 may include a vertical upper section, an intermediate support section with, and a horizontal bottom section. The intermediate support section connects the vertical upper section to the horizontal bottom section and is sized to contact the optical lens 13. In some other embodiments, the groove 142 may be formed as V-shape or any other proper shapes as long as it can form the above mentioned triangle support.

[0039] On the top side of the optical lens 132, a pressing element 150 is provided. In some embodiments, the pressing element 150 have elasticity and can be elastically pre-deformed before being placed above the optical lens 132. Such an elastic preload can press the optical lens 132 in position reliably even after a long-term use. In some embodiments, the pressing element 150 may be an elastic sheet configured to press the optical lens 132 with a certain elastic preload. In some embodiments, the elastic sheet may include a profiled portion 152 at one end which is shaped to match the profile of the lens 132. In the shown example, when the lens 132 is of circular section, the profiled portion 152 may be an arc-shaped. The elastic sheet may include a mounting portion 158. Via the mounting portion 158, the elastic sheet may be fixed to the base or other fixed parts of the  housing.

[0040] In the shown example, also referring to Fig. 3, a mounting hole 156 may be provided at the mounting portion 158. A mounting platform 147 may be provided on the base 140 adjacent to the groove 142. The elastic sheet may be fixed to the mounting platform 147 via a screw through the mounting hole 156. In the shown example, the groove 144 is analogously configured and its description is omitted. In some embodiments, within the grooves 142, 144, an adhesive may be provided for further adhering the optical lens 132, 134 to the base 140.
