AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing AI/ML beam management (BM) testing lacks sufficient testability due to limitations in UE beam implementation and operation, leading to large uncertainties and insufficient simulation environments, particularly in FR2, where current test chambers only support signals from a limited number of angles of arrival (AoAs) and do not account for UE beamforming impacts.

Method used

Enhancing testability by using a single angle of arrival (AoA) for signal transmission and incorporating a calibration step to account for UE beamforming gain, reducing uncertainty and improving accuracy through methods that consider both BS and UE side configurations and implementations.

Benefits of technology

The proposed methods reduce uncertainty and enhance the accuracy of AI/ML BM model performance evaluations by accounting for UE beamforming impacts and aligning test environments with realistic conditions, thereby improving the reliability of AI/ML BM testing.

Description

SOLUTION FOR AI / ML BM TESTABILITYFIELD

[0001] The present disclosure relates generally to AI / ML beam management (BM) testing, and more particularly, to methods for enhancing testability in AI / ML BM through calibration and single AoA transmission.BACKGROUND

[0002] In AI / ML beam management (BM) , the AI / ML model is designed to predict the Tx beam information (such as the best beam and the beam quality) , even through UE does not measure all the Tx beams. Since the AI / ML model have learned specific spatial correlation between the Tx beams, it can use the incomplete measurement to predict the whole Tx beams’ information. Or AI / ML model can be used to predict the future Tx beam information.

[0003] In one embodiment, BS only transmit a subset of SSBs, corresponding to a subset of Tx beams in FR2. UE perform measurement and report RSRP values of all Tx beams to BS to allow BS to make transmission scheduling with lower overhead.

[0004] To test the model’s performance in the AI / ML BM, we may consider a realistic air transmission environment, i.e., signal arrive UE from different angles of arrivals (AoAs) due to multipath, and this AoA group change while different Tx beam is assumed. The test will be done in FR2 OTA chamber room and should take UE-sided beamforming impact (Rx beam selection, Rx beam shaping, etc. ) into the consideration.

[0005] Drawback 1: no limitation on the UE beam’s implement and operation, which cause large uncertainty in the test.

[0006] Drawback 2: Currently, the test chamber room only support signal transmitted from 6 AoAs with 1 Tx beam assumed, which is insufficient in AI / ML BM.SUMMARY

[0007] The present disclosure provides methods for enhancing the testability of AI / ML beam management (BM) models. The methods include using a single angle of arrival (AoA) for signal transmission and incorporating a calibration step to account for UE beamforming gain. These methods aim to reduce uncertainty in testing environments and improve the accuracy of AI / ML BM model performance evaluations via a low-cost solution.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0008] FIG. 1 illustrates the testing procedure for AI / ML beam management (BM) .DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0009] In the AI / ML test for the model’s performance, the transmit power of RSs at TE is obtained from simulation or field collection, where the configurations and implement consideration for both BS side and UE side are implicitly reflected on the transmit power of RSs, include at least channel model, and / or number of Tx beams, and / or UE speed, and / or BS Antenna Configuration, and / or BS Antenna radiation pattern, and / or UE Antenna Configuration, and / or UE Antenna radiation pattern.

[0010] Instead of implementing multiple AoAs for a number of different Tx beams in the chamber room, Single AoA is used in the test as the model’s input data are the measurement metric of the transmitted signal from TE, which have already reflected the configurations and implement consideration for both BS side and UE side.

[0011] To reduce the impact of UE Rx gain on the performance of AI / ML model, an additional calibration procedure may be added as below:

[0012] TE transmit the signal with reference power, UE receive signal and report the metric value to TE

[0013] After TE obtain UE’s report, TE can use the report metric value and the reference power to build up the relationship (e.g. ratio between transmitted power and reported RSRP value) , which allow TE to know how to configure the transmitted power to meet the target metric value.

[0014] During the test, to keep fixed Rx beam at UE, UE may be set not to switch the Rx beam during the test after aligning the AoA and the beam direction.

[0015] Subsequent testing procedure:

[0016] TE keeps all environment settings (e.g. AoA direction) in calibration phase, and then UE perform AI / ML model inference.

[0017] The transmit power of RSs at TE is obtained from simulation or field collection, where the configurations and implement consideration for both BS side and UE side are implicitly reflected on the transmit power of RSs.

[0018] TE change the transmitted power based on the relationship obtained from the calibration part if needed, to ensure the target metric value is fed into AI / ML model.

[0019] In one embodiment,

[0020] UE is set not to switch the Rx beam during the test.

[0021] TE transmitted the SSB with the reference power to UE, UE then perform L1-RSRP measurement and report the RSRP value to TE.

[0022] After TE obtain the L1-RSRP report, the UE’s beamforming gain is obtained based on the following equation.

[0023] UE Received power = Transmitted power from TE *UE beamforming gain

[0024] After TE know the UE beamforming gain, then TE can transmit RSs with calibrated power. All the RSs are transmitted from the same and only AoA. The transmitted power before calibration is gotten from simulation or field collection. The configurations and implement consideration for both BS side and UE side are implicitly reflected on the transmit power of RSs.
