Abstract
Description
ELECTROMAGNETIC SEAL SECURE DOOR SETFIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0001] This invention relates to an electromagnetic (EM) door seal, a secure door set, a secure door leaf and a secure door frame all comprising an EM seal having two cooperating members, a male cooperating member having two or more fins and a female cooperating member having two or more channels. More particularly, this invention relates to an EM seal having the cooperating male member and female member and one or more bias to selectively impel one of the cooperating members to allow opening and closing of the door leaf.BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION
[0002] Modem states rely heavily on electronic and electrical equipment for communication, commerce, and national security. This crucial equipment needs to be protected from significant threats that could damage its operability or functionality and cause major damage to networks and catastrophic disruptions to services. Undesired EM radiation presents a serious threat which may originate naturally from lightning, solar storms & solar flares or from man-made sources including power lines and electromagnetic pulses (EMP), also referred to as a transient electromagnetic disturbance (TED). In addition to the physical protection of electronic equipment, there is a need to protect sensitive data and information stored and transmitted by this equipment.
[0003] Electromagnetic (EM) shielding has been used to protect highly sensitive computers by preventing radiofrequency (RF) and EM waves from entering a sealed enclosure containing the computer equipment. Later technologies were designed to prevent EM or RF waves from being transmitted from the shielded enclosure to the outside, in order to maintain confidentiality. More recently, EM shielding has been applied to prevent loss of function or data resulting from an EMP, which could be natural, such as, caused by lightning or a solar storm, or artificial, such as deliberate discharge of a weapon intended to disrupt communications equipment or computers.
[0004] From small scale printed circuit board (PCB) to large rooms, devices and equipment are commonly protected from electromagnetic threats by surrounding the areaof interest with EM shielding to block or attenuate electromagnetic waves by reflection, absorption, or dissipation. These enclosures are commonly referred to as a Faraday Cage or Faraday Shield. The shield may be formed of a continuous covering of conductive material or a cage consisting of a mesh in such materials.
[0005] EM shielding is most effective when it is an uninterrupted barrier which fully encloses the space requiring protection. However, for enclosures to be functional and allow persons to work inside, penetrations are required for the transit of amenities such as air, water, power, and communications. These penetrations create unavoidable apertures in the enclosure which can degrade the overall shielding effectiveness (SE).
[0006] Generally, the largest penetration in any working enclosure is the doorway to allow the ingress and egress of personnel. Like all penetrations, doors may require EM shielding to compliment the overall shielding effectiveness of an enclosure.
[0007] Some Radio Frequency (RF) shielded doors utilise a mechanical contact mechanism. For example, US Patent 3,589,070 describes a door with a vertical rigid plate member which enters a slot on the frame, forcing contact fingers on either side of the slot apart, so the front of the plate member contacts a foam plastic seal. US Patent 4,069,618 similar describes a blade-like rigid contact element on a door which, when the door is closed, is received in a slot on the frame. Finger contacts are placed on either side of the slot in the frame to make electrical contact with the contact element on the door.
[0008] Another example of a mechanical contact mechanism is described in Japanese patent publication 2012-169604 to Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, which discloses a door and frame with complementarily positioned metal plates, elastic conductive members and EM wave absorption members, which come into contact when the door is closed against the frame.
[0009] Chinese Utility Model 205823097 to Zhuhou Heli Electromagnetic Tech Co Ltd describes a door and frame which when closed, has a sealing strip on the door contact the door frame to form a good seal for sound insulation. The sealing strip is provided on one end of an aluminium bead extending from an edge of the door leaf. The aluminium bead isconnected to a bending member, an electromagnetic shielding layer and / or a radiation protection layer to provide radiation protection and electromagnetic shielding in an integral shielding structure.
[0010] Chinese Utility Model 206829916 also to Zhuhou Heli Electromagnetic Tech Co Ltd describes an aluminium alloy door and frame that has a copper foil EM shielding layer and a metal reed arranged on the four sides of the door leaf so that, when the door is closed, the metal reed is pressed and connected with the door frame to cut off the gap between the leaf and frame and improve the EM shielding.
[0011] United States Patent 8,925,251 to Rust describes an EM shielded door with a constant force spring perimeter seal. The door panel is provided with a sealing surface along one side near the outer edge. On the doorjamb there is a spring containment member along an insider perimeter facing the door panel. The spring containment member is in the form of one or more coiled spring which coils and uncoils with the closing and opening of the door.
[0012] Canadian Patent 1254988 to Merewether describes a door seal with two cooperating members, at least one of which has a cavity therein filled with a dielectric or lossy material. The door is described as having a knife edge which, when the door is closed, is received in a slot on the door frame. Resilient spring fingers are disposed on either side of the slot to contact the knife edge on the door. The spring fingers are described as being constructed out of beryllium copper or phosphor bronze or other similar material.
[0013] With the exponential use and reliance on electronics and electrical equipment, the need for enclosures to provide shielding from damaging EM is growing. Improving the SE of unavoidable apertures, and particular doorways, will enhance the over shielding efficacy of any enclosure.

As will be later described, this entire frame is fitted into the door frame in a way to allow the frame to move transversely from side to side across the width of the door frame. This is done to accommodate the pivotal movement of the action of closing the door. As the door is progressively closed, the fins of the male formations at the hinge side of the door commence entering their corresponding female formations. As the door then continues to move to its fully closed position, and the seals interengage around all aides of the door, there is small degree of movement of the frame C.2 towards the lock side of the door. This movement is allowed by a free floating mounting arrangement of the frame C.2 under the influence of biasing springs, which bias the frame towards a set position at the hinge side of the frame. In this position, the male formations first enter the female formations during door closing, and the frame is then moved against the biasing springs by further closing of the door to arrive at its fully closed position. The freedom of movement of the frame allows for smooth interengagement of the seals during door closing without collision and with minimised wear on the seals.
