[0021] DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE EMBODIMENTS

[0022] The present disclosure will be further described in detail below with reference to the drawings and embodiments. It can be understood that embodiments described herein are used merely to explain a related disclosure, rather than limit the disclosure. It should be additionally noted that, for ease of description, only parts related to the related disclosure are shown in the drawings.

[0023] It will be understood that, although the terms first, second, third etc. may be used herein to describe various elements, components, regions, layers, segments and / or sections, these elements, components, regions, layers, segments and / or sections should not be limited by these terms. These terms are only used to distinguish one element, component, region, layer, segment or section from another. Thus, a first element, component, region, layer, segment or section discussed below could be termed a second element, component, region, layer, segment or section without departing from the teachings of the present invention.

[0024] Spatially relative terms, such as “beneath” , “below” , “lower” , “under” , “above” , “upper” and the like, may be used herein for ease of description to describe one element or feature's relationship to another element (s) or feature (s) as illustrated in the figures. It will be understood that the spatially relative terms are intended to encompass different orientations of the device in use or operation in addition to the orientation depicted in the figures. For example, if the device in the figures is turned over, elements described as “below” or “beneath” or “under” other elements or features would then be oriented “above” the other elements or features. Thus, the exemplary  terms “below” and “under” can encompass both an orientation of above and below. Terms such as “before” or “preceding” and “after” or “followed by” may be similarly used, for example, to indicate an order in which light passes through the elements. The device may be otherwise oriented (rotated 90 degrees or at other orientations) and the spatially relative descriptors used herein interpreted accordingly. In addition, it will also be understood that when a layer is referred to as being “between” two layers, it can be the only layer between the two layers, or one or more intervening layers may also be present.

[0025] The terminology used herein is for the purpose of describing particular embodiments only and is not intended to be limiting of the invention. As used herein, the singular forms “a” , “an” and “the” are intended to include the plural forms as well, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise. It will be further understood that the terms “comprises” and / or “comprising, ” when used in this specification, specify the presence of stated features, integers, steps, operations, elements, and / or components, but do not preclude the presence or addition of one or more other features, integers, steps, operations, elements, components, and / or groups thereof. As used herein, the term “and / or” includes any and all combinations of one or more of the associated listed items.

[0026] It will be understood that when an element or layer is referred to as being “on” , “connected to” , “coupled to” , or “adjacent to” another element or layer, it can be directly on, connected, coupled, or adjacent to the other element or layer, or intervening elements or layers may be present. In contrast, when an element is referred to as being “directly on, ” “directly connected to” , “directly coupled to” , or “immediately adjacent to” another element or layer, there are no intervening elements or layers present. In no event, however, should “on” or “directly on” be construed as requiring a layer to completely cover an underlying layer.

[0027] Embodiments of the invention are described herein with reference to schematic illustrations of idealized embodiments (and intermediate structures) of the invention. As such, variations from the shapes of the illustrations as a result, for example, of manufacturing techniques and / or tolerances, are to be expected. Thus, embodiments of the invention should not be construed as limited to the particular shapes of regions illustrated herein but are to include deviations in shapes that result, for example, from manufacturing. Accordingly, the regions illustrated in the figures are schematic in nature and their shapes are not intended to illustrate the actual shape of a region of a device and are not intended to limit the scope of the invention.

[0028] Unless otherwise defined, all terms (including technical and scientific terms) used herein have the same meaning as commonly understood by one of ordinary skill in the art to which this invention belongs. It will be further understood that terms, such as those defined in commonly used dictionaries, should be interpreted as having a meaning that is consistent with their meaning in the context of the relevant art and / or the present specification and will not be interpreted in an idealized or overly formal sense unless expressly so defined herein.

[0029] The explosion-proof structure on the battery cell has a significant impact on the safety of the battery. For example, when there is a short circuit, overcharging and other phenomena, it may lead to a sudden rise in pressure or temperature inside the battery cell. In this case, the explosion-proof structure can be actuated to release the internal pressure to the outside, in order to prevent the battery cell from exploding and firing. In other words, the explosion-proof structure is actuated to create a channel through which the pressure inside the battery cell can be released.

[0030] In the related art, as for the safety of the battery, it is usually achieved by a housing made of aluminum and an explosion-proof valve welded on the housing. However, the housing  made of aluminum has a thicker wall thickness, resulting in poorer temperature resistance, safety and reliability, and the explosion-proof valve needs to be attached to the housing by welding, which is less reliable and more costly to be manufactured. In addition, although it is possible to change the manufacturing method of the housing made of aluminum, for example, from the stamping and stretching method to the extruding or the bending method, the manufactured housing is also less resistant to temperature and the reliability of the explosion-proof valve is still poor.

[0031] In view of the above problems that exist in the battery, the present disclosure provides a housing integrated with explosion-proof structure, to improve temperature resistance, explosion protection, reliability and safety of the battery and reduce the costs of manufacture and components.

[0032] The housing disclosed in embodiments of the present disclosure may, but are not limited to, be used for a battery cell. The battery cell may include a lithium-ion secondary battery, a lithium-ion primary battery, a lithium-sulfur battery, a sodium-lithium-ion battery, a sodium-ion battery, or a magnesium-ion battery, etc., and embodiments of the present disclosure are not limited thereto. The battery cell may be in the form of a cylinder, a flat body, a rectangular body, or other shapes, etc., and embodiments of the present disclosure are not limited thereto.

[0033] The battery cell disclosed in the embodiments of the present application may, but is not limited to, be used in a power-using device. A power supply system for the power-using device may be formed using the battery cell and the battery according to the present disclosure, or the like. The power-using device may be, but is not limited to, a cell phone, a tablet, a laptop computer, an electric toy, a power tool, a vehicle, a boat, a spacecraft, and the like. The electric toy may include stationary or mobile electric toy, such as, for example, a game machine, electric car toy, electric  boat toy, and electric airplane toy, and the like, and the spacecraft may include an airplane, rocket, space shuttle, and spaceship, and the like.

[0034] Fig. 1 is a schematic perspective view showing the battery cell 100 disposed within the housing 200 according to one or more examples of the present disclosure, and Fig. 2 is a schematic perspective view showing the housing 200 of Fig. 1. As shown in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2, the housing 200 for the battery cell 100 includes: a housing body 201, including a cavity 2012 for receiving the battery cell 100 and a first peripheral side wall 2011 opposite a peripheral side surface of the battery cell 100; and an explosion-proof structure 202, defined by parts of the first peripheral side wall 2011, the explosion-proof structure 202 including a weakened portion 2021, a retention portion 2022, and an explosion-proof portion 2023 enclosed by the weakened portion 2021 and the retention portion 2022, wherein the explosion-proof structure 202 is configured to fracture the weakened portion 2021 to open the explosion-proof portion 2023 around the retention portion 2022 when pressure in the cavity 2012 exceeds a pressure threshold.

[0035] In the above embodiments, the weakened portion 2021 may be a portion of the first peripheral side wall 2011 of the housing body 201 having the smaller thickness, or a portion having smaller material strength, and the present disclosure is not limited to the above examples. The weakened portion 2021 is used to define a location of fracture first in the explosion-proof structure 202, such that the weakened portion 2021 is preferentially fractured to open the explosion-proof portion 2023 when the pressure inside the cavity 2012 exceeds the threshold value, and the explosion-proof portion 2023 is turned over towards the side where the retention portion 2022 is located (i.e., turned outward) under the pressure inside the cavity 2012, to realize the function of  timely venting and explosion-proofing, and realize that after the explosion-proof portion 2023 is opened, it can still be retained on the housing to avoid flying out.

[0036] In addition, in the above embodiments, the explosion-proof structure 202 is defined by parts of the first peripheral side wall 2011. That is, the explosion-proof structure 202 is formed in the first peripheral side wall 2011 of the housing 200, i.e., being integrated with the first peripheral side wall 2011 of the housing 200. Compared with the additional explosion-proof valve, the above explosion-proof structure 202 can not only reduce the impact of welding on the performance of explosion-proof valve, but also reduce the manufacturing cost, cost of components, and improve safety and reliability of the battery. Furthermore, the first peripheral side wall 2011 of the housing 200 where the explosion-proof structure 202 is located is opposite the peripheral side surface of the battery cell 100, thereby facilitating the opening of the explosion-proof portion 2023 to realize the function of timely venting and explosion-proofing.

[0037] In some embodiments, as shown in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2, the housing body 201 includes a plurality of peripheral side walls. For example, when the battery cell is a rectangular solid, the housing body 201 accordingly has the first peripheral side wall 2011, the second peripheral side wall 2013, the third peripheral side wall 2014, the fourth peripheral side wall 2015. The first peripheral side wall 2011 is a peripheral side wall of the plurality of peripheral side walls having a smaller area (for example, the smallest area) , such as corresponding to a peripheral side surface of the plurality of peripheral side surface of the battery cell having smaller area (for example, the smallest area) . Smaller surfaces are usually not used as surfaces for placement, thus, the opening of the explosion-proof portion 2023 may not be prevented to realize the function of timely venting and explosion-proofing.

[0038] In some embodiments, as shown in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2, the housing body 201 includes two openings (such as, opening 2016) leading into the cavity 2012 at opposite ends of the housing body, respectively, the second peripheral side wall 2013 disposed between the two openings and opposite the first peripheral side wall 2011, and wherein the two openings are used to seal to the top cover 101 and bottom cover of the battery cell 100 received in the housing body 201, respectively, and the second peripheral side wall 2013 is provided with a welded seam 2017, such that the housing body 201 is sealed.

[0039] In some embodiments, as shown in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2, the housing 200 is provided with merely one explosion-proof structure 202. However, it should be understood that the housing may be provided with a plurality of explosion-proof structures disposed in one peripheral side wall or the plurality of peripheral side walls of the housing body.

[0040] In some embodiments, the explosion-proof structure 202 further includes an explosion-proof groove 2024 extending inwardly from a surface of the first peripheral side wall 2011, and the weakened portion 2021 is a bottom wall of the explosion-proof groove 2024. In this case, by setting the bottom wall of the explosion-proof groove 2024 as the weakened portion 2021, manufacturing and processing of the weakened portion 2021 can be easily performed. Alternatively or additionally, the weakened portion may be a portion of the first peripheral side wall of the housing body having smaller material strength.

[0041] In some embodiments, as shown in Fig. 3, a first thickness t1 of the weakened portion 2021 along a direction L perpendicular to the surface (where the explosion-proof groove is located) of the first peripheral side wall 2011 is less than a second thickness t2 of a portion of the first peripheral side wall 2011 other than the weakened portion 2021 along the direction L. In this case,  the strength of the weakened portion 2021 is reduced, thereby facilitating the fracturing of the weakened portion 2021 when pressure in the cavity 2012 exceeds the pressure threshold.

[0042] In some embodiments, the first thickness t1 is 20%to 80%of the second thickness t2. This allows a balance between the reducing of the strength of the weakened portion 2021 to facilitate timely fracturing and the remaining of the strength of the weakened portion 2021 to avoid fracturing when it is not necessary.

[0043] In some embodiments, as shown in Fig. 4, the explosion-proof groove 2024 is shaped as one of a trapezoidal shape s1, a V-shape s2, or a U-shape s3, in the cross-section perpendicular to the surface (where the explosion-proof groove is located) of the first peripheral side wall 2011, and embodiments of the present disclosure are not limited thereto. In this case, the explosion-proof groove 2024 forms a structure of varying width, thereby enhancing the strength of the explosion-proof groove 2024.

[0044] In some embodiments, as shown in Fig. 3, the explosion-proof groove 2024 is shaped as a trapezoidal shape s4 in a cross-section perpendicular to the surface (where the explosion-proof groove is located) of the first peripheral side wall 2011, wherein a width w1 of the trapezoidal shape at an opening of the explosion-proof groove 2024 is greater than a width w2 of the trapezoidal shape at a bottom wall of the explosion-proof groove 2024, and wherein a bottom edge of the trapezoidal shape s4 at the bottom wall of the explosion-proof groove 2024 transitions through an arc 2025. In this case, the explosion-proof groove 2024 further forms a structure of varying width through chamfering, thereby enhancing the strength of the explosion-proof groove 2024. Alternatively and additionally, it is possible to set the width of the trapezoidal shape at the  opening of the explosion-proof groove 2024 to be smaller than or equal to the width of the trapezoidal shape at the bottom wall of the explosion-proof groove 2024.

[0045] In some embodiments, wherein the trapezoidal shape has an angle ranging from 20°to 120°, the width of the trapezoidal shape s4 or s1 at the opening of the explosion-proof groove 2024 is between 0.05mm and 0.5mm inclusive, a radius of the arc 2025 is less than or equal to 0.5mm, thereby facilitating the enhancing of the strength of the explosion-proof groove 2024. In addition, it should be noted that the angle and the width of the trapezoidal shape and the radius of the arc may be set as other values as required.

[0046] In some embodiments, as shown Figs. 1 and 2, the weakened portion 2021 includes a first segment 2026, a second segment 2027, and a third segment 2028 connected between the first segment 2026 and the second segment 2027. each of the first segment 2026 and the second segment 2027 is an arc line segment, and the third segment 2028 is a straight line segment. Each of the first segment 2026 and the second segment 2027 has a free end, such that the retention portion 2022 can be formed between the free end of the first segment 2026 and the free end of the second segment 2027. The weakened portion 2021 will be preferentially fractured to open the explosion-proof portion 2023 when the pressure inside the cavity 2012 exceeds the threshold value, and the explosion-proof portion 2023 is turned over outwardly. It should be understood that the extension trajectory of the weakened portion 2021 can be designed such that the weakened portion 2021 can be timely fractured when the pressure inside the cavity 2012 exceeds the threshold value. Some other examples of the extension trajectory of the weakened portion can be found in Fig. 5 and Fig. 6, such as, the extension trajectories e1, e2, e3 and e4. Alternatively, at least one of the first segment and the second segment may be a straight line segment, while the third segment may be  an arc line segment. In addition, it should be noted that the weakened portion 2021 may also have one segment, i.e., one circular arc segment, and embodiments of the present disclosure are not limited thereto.

[0047] In some embodiments, the first segment 2026 and the second segment 2027 are symmetrical with respect to a mid-perpendicular of the third segment 2028, as shown in Figs. 1. It also can be seen in Fig. 5, the first segment 2026’ and the second segment 2027’ of the weakened portion 2021’ are symmetrical with respect to a mid-perpendicular of the third segment 2028’ . The extension trajectories of the weakened portions in the Fig. 6 have the same symmetrical feature as that of Figs. 1 and 5. The weakened portion 2021 with the symmetrical first and second segment 2027s can be fractured relatively simultaneously on both sides thereof, thereby allowing the explosion-proof portion to be opened reliably.

[0048] In some embodiments, as shown in Fig. 1, each of the first segment 2026 and the second segment 2027 is tangent to the third segment 2028. Likewise, as shown in Fig. 5, both the first segment 2026’ and the second segment 2027’ are tangent to the third segment 2028’ . In this case, the weakened portion can be fractured smoothly in its whole extension trajectory, and the opening of the explosion-proof portion can be facilitated. Alternatively, it is also possible that only one of the first segment and the second segment is tangent to the third segment, or both are not tangent to the third segment, as shown in Fig. 6.

[0049] In some embodiments, as shown in Fig. 1, each of the first segment 2026 and the second segment 2027 of the weakened portion 2021 may be a circular arc segment. Likewise, as shown in Fig. 5, both the first segment 2026’ and the second segment 2027’ are circular arc segments.

[0050] In some embodiments, at least one of the first segment and the second segment has an arc angle ranging from 180° to 270°, for example, any one of the first segment and the second segment has an arc angle ranging from 180° to 270°, or each thereof has an arc angle ranging from 180° to 270°. It should be understood that the arc angle of the first segment and the second segment may be set as other values as required.

[0051] In some embodiments, as shown in Fig. 7, the explosion-proof groove 2024 includes a plurality of sub-grooves 2029, the plurality of sub-grooves 2029 being arranged along an extension direction of the explosion-proof groove 2024, the plurality of sub-grooves 2029 being of different depths, and wherein at least one of the plurality of sub-grooves 2029 having a larger depth are used for fracture when the pressure in the cavity 2012 exceeds the pressure threshold, and the rest of the plurality of sub-grooves 2029 having a smaller depth is used as a reinforcing structure. That is, the explosion-proof groove 2024 has varying depth design in the longitudinal cross-section of the explosion-proof groove 2024 along the extension direction of the explosion-proof groove 2024, for example to form a step structure. In other words, the weakened portion has different thicknesses along its extension direction. In this case, the opening pressure can be determined by the maximum depth of the groove (i.e., the minimum thickness of the weakened portion) , and the rest of the groove is used as a reinforcing structure to improve the stability of the opening of the explosion-proof structure 202.

[0052] In some embodiments, the explosion-proof groove 2024 is formed in the first peripheral side wall 2011 by using at least one of lasering, etching or stamping, etc.. These forming means enable the properties of the inner and outer sides of the explosion-proof groove 2024 to be consistent with that of the housing body 201.

[0053] In some embodiments, as shown in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2, the surface of the first peripheral side wall 2011 where the explosion-proof structure 202 is located is an outer surface of the first peripheral side wall 2011 facing away from the battery cell 100. That is, the explosion-proof structure 202 is formed in the outer surface of the housing 200. Alternatively or additionally, as shown in Fig. 8, the surface of the first peripheral side wall 2011 where the explosion-proof structure 202 is located is an inner surface of the first peripheral side wall 2011 facing the battery cell. That is, the explosion-proof structure 202 is formed in the inner surface of the housing 210.

[0054] In some embodiments, the explosion-proof structure 202 has at least one of the following: a distance of 30mm to 100mm from an edge of the first peripheral side wall 2011 along a length direction C of the first peripheral side wall 2011; and a distance of less than or equal to 20mm from a centerline of the first peripheral side wall 2011 along a width direction K of the first peripheral side wall 2011. For example, as shown in Fig. 9, the explosion-proof structure 202 of the housing 220 is located at the distance of 30mm to 100mm from the edge of the first peripheral side wall along the length direction C of the first peripheral side wall. For another example, as shown in Fig. 10, the explosion-proof structure 202 of the housing 230 is located at the distance of less than or equal to 20mm from the centerline of the first peripheral side wall along the width direction K of the first peripheral side wall. For still another example, the explosion-proof structure is located at the distance of 30mm to 100mm from the edge of the first peripheral side wall along the length direction of the first peripheral side wall and at the distance of less than 20mm from the centerline of the first peripheral side wall along the width direction of the first peripheral side wall. Through the above embodiments, it can be facilitated to timely and reliably open the explosion-proof structure when the pressure in the cavity exceeds the threshold value.

[0055] In some embodiments, the explosion-proof structure 202 is located at a central position of the surface of the first peripheral side wall 2011 where the explosion-proof structure is located, as shown in Fig. 1. Through the above embodiments, it can be facilitated to timely and reliably open the explosion-proof structure 202 when the pressure in the cavity 2012 exceeds the threshold value.

[0056] According to another aspect of the present disclosure, an embodiment of the present disclosure provides a battery cell 100, wherein the battery cell 100 is disposed within the housing 200, 210, 220, 230.
