Description

Degreasing composition and process for treating a metal surfaceTechnical field

[0001] The present invention relates to a degreasing composition for treating a metal surface, and in particular, to a phosphorus-free degreasing composition for treating a metal surface; and it also relates to a process for treating a metal surface with the composition, and a use of the composition for treating a substrate containing a metal surface.Background of the invention

[0002] Common metal surface treatments include degreasing, electroless plating, electroplating, acid pickling, passivating, phosphating and zirconizing. Among these, degreasing is generally used before other treatment (s) ; and it is an important treatment, since its degreasing effect determines the quality and cost of the subsequent treatment (s) .

[0003] In the prior art, degreasing compositions for treating a metal surface, especially phosphorus-free degreasing compositions for treating a metal surface, usually contain silicate to inhibit the corrosion of the metal surface and reduce the etching of the metal surface. However, in actual applications, the pH values of the degreasing compositions are usually within the range of from 9.5 to 10.5; and when the pH values are within the range of from 9.5 to 10.5, silicates have low solubilities and thus easily form sediments. The formation of silicate sediments leads to a large amount of waste of silicate, and fouling and clogging devices in the production, especially heat exchangers; and all of these greatly increase costs of the metal surface treatments on account of an increased amount of silicate as required, cleaning, shutdown and maintenance of the devices, replacement of some parts in the devices, etc.

[0004] In view of the above, it would be desirable to provide a phosphorus-free degreasing composition for treating a metal surface, which exhibits a reduced sedimentation ratio of silicate.Summary of the invention

[0018] (iv) optionally electroless plating, electroplating, acid pickling, passivating, phosphating and / or zirconizing the metal surface.

[0019] Moreover, the present invention provides a use of the phosphorus-free degreasing composition according to the present invention for treating a substrate containing a metal surface.

[0020] All of the composition and process for treating a metal surface, and the use according to the present invention are based on the following surprising discoveries of the inventors: the phosphorus-free degreasing composition for treating a metal surface according to the present invention, especially the specific combination of components (A) to (F) , and the pH value of the composition according to the present invention, exhibits a greatly reduced sedimentation ratio of silicate.Detailed description of the invention

[0147] Preparation of compositions of Examples 1-52 (Ex. 1 to Ex. 52) :

[0148] Specific amounts and types of components in the compositions of Examples 1 to 52, and specific pH values of the compositions are shown in Tables 1 to 9 as below. The compositions were prepared at room temperature as follows: in a 1000ml beaker, under stirring at a speed of 300 to 500rpm, the components (C) , (B) , (D) , (E) and (F) were added in the above order into the component (G) ; the pH value of the composition was adjusted with boric acid (available form Sinopharm Chemical Reagent Co., Ltd. ) ; if any, the component (A) was added into the mixture; and finally, the composition was stirred until it was homogenous. The pH values of the compositions were measured by PHBJ-260 pH Meter from INESA at room temperature.

[0150] In order to test the sedimentation ratios of the compositions of Examples 1 to 52, these compositions were left to stand for 24 hours, and then the supernatants therein were removed. The remaining turbid liquids were filtered, and then the solid residues after filtering were weighed and analyzed for Si element content. The Si element contents obtained from the above were converted into the amounts of silicate according to its molecular formula, and the sedimentation ratios of silicate were the ratios by weight of the sedimentation amount of silicate to the initially added amount of silicate.

[0151] The test results of sedimentation ratio of silicate for the compositions of Examples 1 to 52 are summarized in Tables 1 to 9 as below.
