[0043] Detailed
[0044] The term “natural” has no industry standard definition in the present context. For the purposes of this application, “a natural diester formulation” shall refer to a formulation comprised of materials derived from renewable and / or sustainable resources.
[0045] The natural formulations herein include diisoamyl succinate having the chemical formula:
[0046] Diisoamyl succinate (CAS 818-04-2) is known for a variety of uses other than those that are the subject of this application, and may alternatively be referred to as Diisopentyl succinate; Bis(3-methylbutyl) succinate; Butanedioic acid, l,4-bis(3-methylbutyl) ester; or Succinic acid, di(3-methylbutyl) ester. The inclusion of diisoamyl succinate in the formulations herein has been found to provide various surprising and unexpected advantageous properties including, for example, low viscosity, low surface tension, high spreadability, light skin feel, and low freezing point.
[0047] Specifically:
[0048] Viscosity -6 cps at 25 °C
[0049] Surface tension -21 mN / m at 25 °C (Esters typically fall between 25-35 mN / m)
[0050] Freezing point - 30 °C
[0051] Table 1 below compares Diisoamyl succinate surface tension to other relevant compounds:
[0052] Table 1
[0053] Diisoamyl Succinate shows low surface tension which is closest to D5 silicone and lower than other relevant light emollients in the market. This low surface tension contributes to better spreadability on skin. FTG. 1 charts spreading values % and viscosity together. The chart shows that Diisoamyl Succinate has a superior combination of spreading values and viscosity compared to the closest relevant compounds.
[0054] The spreading value (S) in FIG. 1 was calculated as the spreading area of Paraffinum Liquidum on filter paper (Vaseline Oil 38 cP) (Av) in percentage using the following formula:
[0055] A
[0056] S = — ■ 100 Av
[0057] Paraffinum Liquidum was used as a reference as it is well known in the industry.
[0058] The light skin feel of Diisoamyl Succinate is believed to result from a combination of factors, for example, the formulation having a low surface tension, good spreadability, and low moisture perception. The formulation may also be non-greasy, has a quick dry time, a matte finish and no tack.
[0059] With regard to the properties discussed above and / or below, e.g., in spider chart of FIG. 2, thickness refers to an amount of product that persists between the finger and the forearm during evaluation. The greater the distance between the finger and the skin, the greater the cushion / thickness and the higher thickness score is given. The higher the thickness score, the greater the product's ability to retain its shape.
[0060] Spreadability refers to the ease of moving the product over the skin. This can be evaluated, for example, by rubbing the product over the skin and providing a spreadability score. The higher the score, the better its ability to spread on the skin.
[0061] Absorption refers to the time required and the amount of continued pressure perceived as necessary for the product to achieve a feeling of total ‘rub-in.’ For example, an absorption test may include spreading a pre-measured amount in a circle on the skin for a predetermined number of rubs, for example, 12 rubs. Evaluation after 10 minutes of rubbing with clean fingers across the surface. The less greasy and oily the product, the better / faster its absorption profile. The lower the score, the greater the products ability to be absorbed quickly by the skin.
[0062] Moisture perception may optionally be used to evaluate the product. Moisture perception is the amount of moisture perceived after application. For example, evaluating after 15 minutes of light rubbing. The higher the score, the better its perceived hydration after applying the product. Moisture perception may alternatively be referred to as nourishing.
[0063] Light skin feel of Diisoamyl Succinate was evaluated and the results provided in FIG. 2. The evaluation compared Diisoamyl Succinate to Caprylic / Capric Triglyceride. The Evaluation was done by 9 trained panelists who provided a sensory evaluation of neat (100%) diisoamyl succinate applied to skin.
[0064] Light skin feel is shown by low thickness, high spreadability and low absorption values.
[0065] The tack reduction potential of Diisoamyl Succinate was also evaluated using a Rheometer. 10% and 20% of Diisoamyl Succinate was added to Vaseline and the tack reduction was measured compared to neat Vaseline. The lower the peak and the smaller the area under the curve, the less tack the instrument perceived. Adding 10% and 20% Diisoamyl Succinate to Vaseline reduced its overall tack by 42% and 67%. The full results are provided in FIG. 3.
[0066] The solvency of Diisoamyl Succinate was also evaluated. Diisoamyl Succinate has comparable / higher solvency compared to other common sunscreen solvents, generally better for Avobenzone, Uvinul® A Plus, Uvinul ® T 150. The specific values for Diisoamyl Succinate and each solid UV filter are provided in Table 2 below.
[0067] Table 2
[0068] Table 2 Abbreviations:
[0069] BMDBM refers to Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane known by other names, for example, Avobenzone, Parsol® 1789, Neo Heliopan® 357.
[0070] BEMT refers to Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine known by other names, for example, Tinosorb® S, Parsol® Shield.
[0071] DHHB refers to Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate known by other names, for example, Uvinul® A Plus, Parsol ® DHHB.
[0072] EHT refers to Ethylhexyl Triazone known by other names, for example, Uvinul ® T 150, Parsol ® EHT.
[0073] Inclusion of diisoamyl succinate in the formulations herein also enables wetting and dispersal of color pigments and inorganic UV filters, solubilizing of organic UV filters, a reduction in greasiness of oils, fast absorption and excellent slip, and a powdery afterfeel.
[0074] Due to the enhanced wetting and dispersing ability of diisoamyl succinate of pigments and UV filters, e.g., inorganic UV filters, such as zinc oxides and / or titanium dioxide, it has been found to be highly beneficial in producing premixes containing high concentrations of pigments and / or UV filters, in an oil suitable for use in body or hair care compositions. Such premixes in some embodiments contain only pigments and / or UV filters, such as zinc oxides and / or titanium dioxide, dispersed in an oil, such as any oil disclosed herein, and diisoamyl succinate. Premixes including diisoamyl succinate and high concentrations of pigments provide superior skin feel compared to premixes containing similar concentrations of pigments without diisoamyl succinate. Without wishing to be bound by theory, it is currently believed that the superior wetting and dispersing properties of diisoamyl succinate enables higher pigment loading in premixes compared to other emollients, while maintaining good skin feel. Such premixes are useful in the cosmetics or hair or body care industries for producing further downstream products, such as lotions, cosmetics, hair coloring compositions, as well as any products disclosed herein.
[0075] The inclusion of diisoamyl succinate in the formulations herein also provides surprising and unexpected advantageous properties specific to sun care application, for example, good solvency for UV filters and good wetting of mineral filters. Such mineral filters include, for example, coated and uncoated TiCh and ZnO. Pigment wetting of mineral filters was evaluated. Good pigment wetting is indicated with lower viscosity values when pigment is mixed in respective oils at a certain percentage. Diisoamyl succinate shows comparable / better wetting to other common oils used with mineral filters. Table 3 below shows the results of the evaluation:
[0076] Table 3
[0077] The formulation also has a high dielectric constant that contributes to photostability.
[0078] Dielectric Constants:
[0079] Diisoamyl Succinate: 4.65
[0080] C 12- 15 Alkyl Benzoate: 3.85
[0081] Dicaprylyl Carbonate: 2.42
[0082] As shown in FIG. 14, the inclusion of diisoamyl succinate also contributes to greater film uniformity when a film or layer of the product is formed, i.e., the uniformity of the formulations thickness. This property contributes to overall SPF enhancement when applied to the skin, for example, in a sun block composition.
[0083] The inclusion of diisoamyl succinate also results in the formulation being hydrophobic which improves the water resistance of, for example, a sunscreen formulation or lotions or various cosmetic products.
[0084] The inclusion of diisoamyl succinate in the formulations herein also provides surprising and unexpected advantageous properties specific to hair care applications, for example, by providing increased combability. Without wishing to be bound by theory, the inventors currently believe that diisoamyl succinate provides superior combability by lubricating hair follicles to reduce dry surface friction, increasing fiber alignment, and / or reducing the hair's electrical charge to reduce static.
[0085] Diisoamyl succinate formulations also increase the shine of hair when applied.
[0086] The hydrophobic property of the formulation including diisoamyl succinate discussed above also provides hair with humidity resistance. As shown in FIG. 7, for example, hair treated with diisoamyl succinate (10% in isododecane) resisted increase in frizz even after being equilibrated at 55% relative humidity for 24 hours and then exposed to 85% relative humidity for an additional 24 hours. These results were similar to frizz resistance performance provided by D5 or argan oil (10% in isododecane).
[0087] The diisoamyl succinate formulations also accumulate less in hair after repeated application resulting in less buildup of the formulation on the hair.
[0088] The inclusion of diisoamyl succinate in the formulations herein also provides surprising and unexpected advantageous properties specific to skin care applications.
[0089] For example, the greater film uniformity, low viscosity, low surface tension, high spreadability, and light skin feel are all desirable advantageous properties in skin care applications. The diisoamyl succinate in the formulations also functions as a moisturizer of the skin.
[0090] Additionally, the properties of the formulation, for example, high film uniformity, low viscosity, low surface tension, high spreadability synergistically combine to provide a formulation which is easy to apply evenly throughout a desired area of skin whereby improved application results along with improved performance of the formulation.
[0091] In multi-pigmented formulations (containing multiple pigments like TiCh and / or ZnO with color pigments such as iron oxides), color development means that the color from the mixture is uniform, fully dispersed, and saturated.
[0092] Additionally, the good wetting of mineral filters, e.g., UV filters, for example, iron oxides provides a variety of advantages concerning processability into various formulation, storage stability among others.
[0093] Personal care formulations may include, but are not limited to, oral care products, skin cleansing products, hair cleansing products, and nail products. Nail products may include, for example, nail polish, nail polish removers, cuticle and / or nail treatments. Personal care formulations may also include UV and pigment dispersions, conditioning agents for skin, nails and hair, antiperspirants and deodorants, soaps, hair sprays, gels, hair shampoo, hair conditioner, pomades, powders, and cosmetics. Cosmetics may include, for example, lipsticks, lip gloss, and eye makeup such as eyebrow pencils or powders, eye shadows, mascara, and eye liners. Also included are lotions for skin and hair, including those with sunscreens or UV absorbers, bath or shower oils, hand lotions and salves, creams and lotions for the facial area, hair creams, mousses, gels, and other styling aids, foundations for application to the face, tanning products, and the like.
[0094] The personal care formulations may contain any additional additives or components depending on the specific embodiment and desired properties. For example, surfactants may be included in the personal care composition, such as, for example, an anionic surfactant, a zwitterionic surfactant, a cationic surfactant, a non-ionic surfactant or any combinations of therein.
[0095] In personal care applications, the tactile impression or skin feel of a product, for example, the feeling of the formulation upon initial application, the feeling while spreading the formulation over the skin, and the feeling of the formulation left on the skin after application are all important properties. While these properties can have non-traditional measuring techniques, a superior skin feel in one or more of the above phases can greatly contribute to the product's desirably as well as its commercial success. In general, emollients of a composition contribute to the “feel” or tactile impression properties, as they provide, for example, lubrication, humectancy, and occlusion.
[0096] In general, rapid spreading formulations with lower viscosities are described as “light”, whereas slower spreading formulations with higher viscosities are perceived as “heavy.” While preference can differ depending on the particular product in question, for the applications discussed herein, lightness, as well as a lack of oiliness and / or greasiness is generally, but not necessarily, considered advantageous.
[0097] Natural ester fats, oils and waxes (vegetable oil emollients) are commonly used in their native state providing emolliency, lubricity, structure, and solvency to personal care formulations. As mentioned above “natural” products in the context of the personal care industry are viewed as preferable over non-natural products even in cases where the non-natural product has superior desirable properties, for example, superior skin feel. As an example, vegetable oil emollients are preferred in a personal care formulation over, for example, a petrochemically-derived synthetics, even when the petrochemically-derived synthetics may provide a superior skin feel. Vegetable oils are commonly used in personal care compositions, for example, coconut oil, com oil, cottonseed oil, canola oil, olive oil, palm oil, peanut oil, safflower oil, sesame oil, soybean oil, sunflower oil and jojoba oil primarily because of the “natural” status.

These organic UV filters are generally incorporated into preparations in an amount of 0.01% by weight to 20% by weight, preferably 1% by weight to 10% by weight.
[0110] The compositions may comprise further inorganic UV filters, e.g., particulate UV filters, for example, chosen from, without limitation, zinc oxides, iron oxides, cerium oxides, zirconium oxides and titanium dioxides, for example, coated titanium dioxide or a combination thereof. The inorganic UV filters are generally incorporated into the compositions in an amount of 0.1% by weight to 25% by weight, preferably 2% by weight to 20% by weight.
[0111] Notably, UV filters do not absorb in IR and VIS regions, only in UV regions. IR and VIS absorbers may be included separately. Additional components may be included to aid the solubilization of ingredients that absorb in IR and VIS regions, e.g., beta carotene.
[0112] The compositions may additionally contain various further components, e.g., amino acids, beeswax, fatty acids, fatty acid alcohols, anionic surfactants, lecithin, phospholipids, sodium, potassium, zinc, iron or aluminium salts of fatty acids, polyethylenes, silicones, proteins (particularly collagen or elastin), alkanolamines, silicon dioxide, aluminium oxide, further metal oxides, phosphates, such as sodium hexametaphosphate, or glycerine.
[0113] Furthermore, especially cosmetic compositions, may also comprise coloured pigments, where the layer structure of the pigments is not limited. The coloured pigment should preferably be on use of 0.5% by weight to 25% by weight. The selection of a corresponding pigment is familiar to the person skilled in the art depending on the color and effects desired.
[0114] Cosmetic compositions may additionally comprise at least one further cosmetic active compound, for example selected from antioxidants, anti-ageing, anti-wrinkle, anti-dandruff, antiacne, anti-cellulite active compounds, deodorants or vitamins.
[0115] The protective action of said preparations against oxidative stress or against the effect of free radicals can be improved if the preparations comprise one or more antioxidants, the person skilled in the art being presented with absolutely no difficulties in selecting antioxidants which act suitably quickly or with a time delay.
[0116] The preparations to be employed may comprise vitamins as further ingredients. Preference is given to vitamins and vitamin derivatives selected from vitamin A, vitamin A propionate, vitamin A palmitate, vitamin A acetate, retinol, vitamin B, thiamine chloride hydrochloride (vitamin Bi), riboflavin (vitamin B2), nicotinamide, vitamin C (ascorbic acid), vitamin D, ergocalciferol (vitamin D2), vitamin E, DL-a-tocopherol, tocopherol E acetate, tocopherol hydrogensuccinate, vitamin Ki, esculin (vitamin P active compound), thiamine (vitamin Bi), nicotinic acid (niacin), pyridoxine, pyridoxal, pyridox amine, (vitamin Be), pantothenic acid, biotin, folic acid and cobalamine (vitamin B 12), particularly preferably vitamin A palmitate, vitamin C and derivatives thereof, DL-a-tocopherol, tocopherol E acetate, nicotinic acid, pantothenic acid and biotin. In the case of cosmetic application, vitamins are usually added with the mixture according to the invention in ranges from 0.01% by weight to 5.0% by weight, based on the total weight.
[0117] Preparations suitable for external use, for example can be applied or sprayed onto the skin as cream or milk (O / W, W / O, O / W / O, W / O / W, W / Si), as lotion or emulsion, in the form of oily- alcoholic, oily-aqueous or aqueous-alcoholic gels or solutions. They can be in the form of solid sticks or formulated as aerosol. They can be in the form of shampoo, shower gel, cleansing milk or serum.
[0118] The following, for example, may be mentioned as application form of the preparations to be employed: solutions, suspensions, emulsions, PIT emulsions, pastes, ointments, gels, creams, lotions, powders, oils, aerosols plasters, compresses, bandages and sprays.
[0119] Preferred assistants originate from the group of preservatives, stabilisers, solubilizers, colorants, odour improvers, thickeners, plasticisers, humectants, interface- active agents, emulsifiers, preservatives, antifoaming agents, perfumes, waxes, lanolin, propellants and other ingredients usually used in cosmetics.
[0120] Ointments, pastes, creams and gels may comprise the customary vehicles which are suitable for topical application, for example animal and vegetable fats, waxes, paraffins, starch, tragacanth, cellulose derivatives, polyethylene glycols, silicones, bentonites, silica, talc and zinc oxide, or mixtures of these substances.
[0121] A further benefit of diisoamyl succinate is to provide a similar effect to cyclomethicone, such as cyclopentasiloxane. Diisoamyl succinate can act as a lightweight moisturizer having a silky texture that may be comparable to that of cyclopentasiloxane and / or other light viscosity silicones with viscosity <10 cP. As such, it hydrates the skin without leaving a greasy residue, leaving the skin feeling refreshed and smooth. In sum, it has been found that diisoamyl succinate is able to impart a silicone like feel, mimicking W / Si feel with W / O containing the diisoamyl succinate. Plus, succinate offers improved solvency and better compatibility with organic UV filter than the silicones. As such, it is especially beneficial in UV blocking composition.
[0122] In a further aspect, given that a similar effect can be achieved with diisoamyl succinate as with cyclomethicone, such as cyclopentasiloxane , it is possible to replace cyclomethicone, such as cyclopentasiloxane, in various cosmetic, hair and body care compositions, while achieving similar effects. [0400] Examples
[0401] Example 1 : Hair Care Formulation
[0402] Diisoamyl succinate, C12-15 alkyl benzoate, helianthus annuus seed oil, macadamia integrifolia seed oil, caprylic / capric triglyceride, cocos nucifera oil, argania spinosa kernel oil, persea gratissima oil, canola oil, olea europaea fruit oil, and panthenyl triacetate were combined in a beaker and stirred until completely homogeneous to provide Formulation 1 :
[0403] Example 2: SPF 40 Sun Care Formulation
[0404] Diisoamyl succinate, ethylhexyl salicylate [octisalate], homosalate [homosalate], octocrylene [octocrilene] were added to a first vessel and heated to 80°C while mixing. Bis- ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine, butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane, VP / eicosene copolymer, cetearyl alcohol, glyceryl stearate citrate, and glyceryl stearate were then added to the first vessel and mixed until uniform. Pharmaceutical grade xanthan gum and glycerin were loaded into a second vessel, followed by water and disodium EDTA with stirring. This mixture was then heated to 80°C. When both vessels are homogeneous, the contents of the first vessel were slowly added to the second vessel with vigorous stirring. After combining, the mixture was stirred for an additional 10 minutes. The vessel was then allowed to cool with continued stirring. When the temperature falls to 50°C. or lower, the preservative was added with stirring until the mixture was uniform. Any lost water was then replaced with stirring until uniform to achieve the desired total volume. The resulting Formulation 2 had an SPF of 40 or greater (in-vivo), was easily spreadable, exhibited a silky smooth texture, was non-greasy, was transparent, was anydrous, and acted as an effective organic UV filter system.
[0405] Example 3 : SPF 60 Sunscreen Stick Formulation
[0406] Diethylamino hydroxybenzoyl hexyl benzoate, bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine, ethylhexyl triazone, ethylhexyl methoxycrylene, diisoamyl succinate, Simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) seed oil, Avena sativa (oat) kernel oil, bacillus ferment, and tocopherol were added to a vessel and stirred by center-stir propeller while heating to a temperature of 90-100°C. Polyamide- 8 was then added to the vessel and stirred until uniform and the polyamide-8 was fully dissolved. The resulting Formulation 3 had an SPF of 60 or greater (in-vivo), was easily spreadable, exhibited a silky smooth texture, was non-greasy, was transparent, was anydrous, and acted as an effective organic UV filter system.
[0407] Example 4: SPF 60 Sunscreen Mist Formulation
[0408] Diisoamyl succinate, zinc oxide (68%), butyloctyl salicylate, ethylhexyl isononanoate, ethylhexyl methoxycrylene, polyhydroxystearic acid, tocopherol, and polyglyceryl-4 olivate / polyricinoleate were added to a vessel and stirred until uniform. A homogeneous mixture of water, glycerin, sodium chloride, and preservative was then slowly added to the vessel and stirred vigorously or homogenized for 10 minutes. The resulting Formulation 4 had an SPF of 60 or greater (in-vivo), provided excellent coverage, had a silky smooth texture, was non-draggy, exhibited a low viscosity water / oil emulsion, was cold-processable, was fluid and sprayable, was transparent on skin, and acted as a mineral UV filter system. Example 5: SPF 30+ Beauty Balm (BB) Cream
[0409] Diisoamyl succinate and polyglyceryl-4 olivate / polyricinoleate were added to a vessel and mixed until uniform. A mixture of the pigment components was then added to the vessel and mixed until uniform. A uniform mixture of the zinc oxide / triethoxycaprylylsilane was then very slowly added to the vessel, followed by vigorous mixing or homogenization for 10 minutes. The resulting Formulation 5 had a predicted in vivo SPF of 30 or greater (SPF 45 in this instance) based on in vitro analysis, provided excellent pigment coverage, excellent UV filter coverage, was a breathable and light beauty balm cream, was easily spreadable, acted as an effective mineral UV filter system, and was non-occlusive.
[0410] Example 6: Color Cosmetic Foundation
[0411] Diisoamyl succinate, the remaining emollients, polyglyceryl-2-triisostearate, Cl 3- 15 alkane, Disteardimonium Hectorite, and Poly glyceryl- 3 Polyricinoleate, and the pigment components were added one-by-one to a first vessel under dispersion blade or homogenizer mixing. Stirring continued for 30 minutes after all components were charged. Separately, water, butylene glycol, the preservatives, and sodium chloride were added one-by-one to a vessel and mixed well to ensure that the sodium chloride was fully solubilized and the mixture was only slightly translucent / turbid. While mixing with the dispersion blade or homogenizer mixing, the water solution was slowly added to the first vessel in small portions, allowing the mixture to recover viscosity in between additions. The mixture thickened as the water mixture was completely added to the first vessel. Mixing continued until the resulting emulsion was uniform and homogeneous. The resulting Formulation 6 was a water / oil emulsion that provided flawless coverage, was easily spreadable, provided a lightweight sensory feel, and was non-occlusive.
[0412] Example 7 : Gel Creme Moisturizer
[0413] Water was added to a beaker and moderately agitated while heating to 50°C. Disodium EDTA and butylene glycol were added one-by-one with stirring. The acrylates / C 10-30 alkyl acrylate crosspolymer was sprinkled in, then the mixture stirred while maintaining temperature until no visible particles remained. Panthenol and allantoin were then added one-by-one and mixed until fully solubilized. The ammonium acryloyldimethyltaurate / VP copolymer was then sprinkled in and the stirring rate adjusted to accommodate the resulting increase in viscosity. The diisoamyl succinate was then added and stirred for 30 minutes, followed by cooling the mixture to 30°C. The preservative was then added and mixed thoroughly. The sodium hydroxide neutralizer was then added with paddle stirring to neutralize the thickener agents, whereupon the mixture thickened slightly. The mixture was then cooled to room temperature with slow mixing. The resulting Formulation 7 skim moisturizer was rich to the eyes, velvety to the touch, light and watery, an emulsifier-free oil / water emulsion, and non-occlusive.
[0414] Example 8: Hair Manageability Assay — Dry and Wet Combing
[0415] Five tresses of double-bleached hair, each approximately 2.5 g and 25 cm in length, were cleaned with 10% sodium laureth sulfate solution, then measured wet, dried for 24 hours at 22+ / - 2°C and 55+1-5% relative humidity (RH), then measured dry. A test formulation of 10% diisoamyl succinate in isododecane (0.1 mL per gram of tress) was then applied to each tress and combing measurements were obtained while the tresses remained wet. After drying 24 hours at 22+ / -2°C and 55+1-5% RH, dry combing measurements were obtained.
[0416] FIG. 4shows that diisoamyl succinate reduces the force required to comb dry tresses by 87% compared to untreated tresses. FIG. 5 shows that diisoamyl succinate reduces the force required to comb wet tresses by 72%. Example 8: Fiber Alignment / Order
[0417] Ten tresses of naturally wavy Caucasian hair (5 grams and about 25 cm long each) were treated with 10% of test compound in isododecane (0.1 mL per g of tress) and then equilibrated at 55% RH for 24 hours. Control tresses naturally wavy Caucasian hair (5 grams and about 25 cm long each) were untreated by any compound and equilibrated at 55% RH for 24 hours. As shown in FIG. 6, treatment with diisoamyl succinate resulted in hair fiber alignment and curl definition without weighing down hair. Hair fibers treated with diisoamyl succinate are individualized with no visible residue.
[0418] Example 9: Frizz Reduction
[0419] Ten tresses of naturally wavy Caucasian hair (5 grams and about 25 cm long each) were treated with 10% of test compound in isododecane (0.1 mL per g of tress) and then equilibrated at 55% RH for 24 hours, followed by exposure to 85% RH for an additional 24 hours. Control tresses naturally wavy Caucasian hair (5 grams and about 25 cm long each) were untreated by any compound and equilibrated at 55% RH for 24 hours, followed by exposure to 85% RH for an additional 24 hours. As shown in FIG. 7, treatment with diisoamyl succinate resulted in tresses that maintained order and frizz reduction (<40% frizz as measured by image analysis). Photographs of treated and control tresses are shown in FIG. 8.
[0420] Example 10: Gloss
[0421] Five tresses of naturally straight hair were treated with 10% of test compound in isododecane (0.1 mL per g of tress), and gloss was measured by standard glossmeter (BYK Glossmeter) methods. As shown in FIG. 9, diisoamyl succinate provided 61% higher shine compared to untreated tress, outperformed D5 by a factor of about 1.6, and provided 82% of the gloss enhancement provided by argan oil. Importantly, tresses treated with diisoamyl succinate did not have visible build-up compared to the tresses treated with argan oil. Hair fibers of the tresses treated with diisoamyl succinate were individualized and had no visible residue.
[0422] Example 11: Short-term Skin Hydration
[0423] Six panelists applied 2 mg / cm2test compound (neat) to a 3x3 cm area of the volar forearm. Hydration was measured using a Delfin Technologies MoistureMeterSC after 30 minutes and again after 2 hours. As shown in FIG. 10, diisoamyl succinate provided more hydration (35%) compared to D5 at both time points. In addition, diisoamyl succinate provided similar skin-feel as D5. Example 12: Short-term Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL)
[0424] Six panelists applied 2 mg / cm2test compound (neat) to a 3x3 cm area of the volar forearm. Transepidermal water loss was measured using a Delfin Technologies VapoMeter (TEWL Meter) after 30 minutes and again after 2 hours. As shown in FIG. 11, both diisoamyl succinate and D5 led to low and comparable TEWL reduction compared to untreated skin. These data demonstrate that both diisoamyl succinate and D5 are non-occlusive emollients and provide good breathability properties when applied to skin — an especially important characteristic for components used in skin care, sun care, and color cosmetic products that are often used in multiple layers.
[0425] Example 13: Color Pigment Wetting / Dispersing
[0426] Test compounds / compositions were tested for pigment wetting / dispersing before and after milling. Each test preparation was prepared as a 50% blend of the pigment shown in Table 4 in capric / caprylic triglyceride, diisoamyl succinate, Cl 2-15 alkyl benzoate, D5, sunflower oil, or castor oil.
[0427] Table 4: Pigment composition
[0428] Each test preparation was tested on a grind gauge, then milled twice in a SpeedMixer at 1,500 rpm for 2 minutes each time, then passed twice through a 3-roll mill. As shown in FIG. 12, test compositions had viscosities ranging from about 5,000 (50% pigment in D5) to about 40,000 (50% pigment in castor oil). As shown in FIG. 13, diisoamyl succinate uniquely showed no streaks before or after milling, while all other test preparations showed considerable streaking before milling and reduced streaking after milling. Diisoamyl succinate demonstrates superior pigment wetting / dispersing, which should lead to faster color development and more efficient processing of the formula.
[0429] Example 14: Color Pigment Film Uniformity
[0430] Each test preparation of Example 13 was subject to draw-down testing to determine the uniformity of the resulting pigment film — an important characteristic for coverage-dependent applications like color cosmetics and sun care. As shown in FIG. 14 (representative images from at least 3 draw-down tests), diisoamyl succinate provided consistently smooth and even films compared to other test preparations.
