Abstract
Description
[0001] ARRANGEMENT FOR CUTTING A WEB OF
[0002] PACKAGING MATERIAL INTO INDIVIDUAL BLANKS
[0003] Technical Field
[0004] The invention relates to an arrangement for cutting a web of packaging material into individual blanks and a method for cutting a web of packaging material into individual blanks.
[0005] A widely used type of packaging material has a cardboard or fiber-based core (the core layer) laminated with polymer layers on both sides. These polymer layers, applied to the core using adhesive or heat-pressing methods, provide benefits such as moisture resistance and durability, thereby improving the structural integrity of the core. Sometimes additional layers are included in the packaging material, such as an aluminum layer or a metalized layer. This packaging material is ideal for food packaging due to its protective qualities. It also offers good printability for branding purposes and versatility for a wide range of applications. When forming a package from the packaging material, a piece of the material is folded to form the package, with dedicated sections where the polymer layers bond to each other to securely form and seal the package.
[0006] The packaging material is typically provided in bulk, e.g., in the form of a long web of packaging material that is wound to form a roll of the packaging material. The web of packaging material is typically cut into pieces that are formed into individual packages. One example of such pieces, which are also referred to as “blanks,” is described in patent document EP4119457A1 . It is important that the pieces are formed correctly when cutting a web of packaging material into the individual pieces. To accomplish this, there is a need to provide an improved setup and a corresponding method for cutting packaging material into individual pieces (blanks).
[0007] It is an object of the invention to at least partly overcome one or more of the above-identified limitations of the prior art. In particular, it is an object of the present invention to provide an arrangement for cutting a web of packaging material into individual blanks that allows for shaping / patterning and accurate cutting of the packaging material into individual pieces. To solve these objects an arrangement for cutting a web of packaging material into individual blanks is provided. The arrangement comprises a punch having a punch edge. The punch edge forms a punch pattern. The arrangement comprises a die. The die is arranged opposite the punch. The die comprises a die edge that has a shape corresponding to a first section of the punch pattern. The arrangement comprises a knife. The knife comprises a knife edge that has a shape corresponding to a second section of the punch pattern. As used herein, “knife edge” may refer to a portion of the knife edge, i.e. the knife comprises a knife edge portion that has a shape corresponding to a second section of the punch pattern. The knife is arranged adjacent to the die such that the die edge and the knife edge form an opening. The opening corresponds to the punch pattern. The punch is movable into the opening for punching the punch pattern in the packaging material. The knife is movable towards the punch to cut the packaging material and form an individual blank that has a blank end which is aligned with the second section of the punch pattern.
[0008] The punch has a punch edge that forms the punch pattern. The punch edge may be a sharp edge. The punch edge of the punch may move into the opening for punching the punch pattern in the packaging material. Thereby, the punch edge of the punch may cut a portion of the packaging material, corresponding to the punch pattern, out of the packaging material. This may in turn allow for forming a sleeve / leaf in the packaging material.
[0009] The die is arranged opposite the punch. The die may extend along the punch e.g. along the punch edge of the die. The die comprises a die edge. The die edge may be a cavity / recess in the die. The shape of the die edge corresponds to the first section of the punch pattern. For instance, the shape of the die edge may correspond to a side / section / portion of a perimeter of the punch pattern. The shape of the die edge may correspond to a plurality of sides / sections / portions of the perimeter of the punch pattern. A depth of the die edge may correspond to the punch edge of the punch to receive the punch edge thereinto.
[0010] The knife is arranged adjacent to the die. The die may be fixed. The knife may be movable with respect to the die. The knife may extend perpendicular to the die. The knife edge may extend along the die adjacent to the die. The knife edge has a shape corresponding to the second section of the punch pattern. For instance, the shape of the knife edge may correspond to a remaining side / section / portion of the perimeter of the punch pattern. The die edge and the knife edge form the opening that corresponds to the punch pattern. The opening may be configured to receive the punch edge of the punch thereinto. It is advantageous that the die edge and the knife edge form the opening which corresponds to the punch pattern, as they allow for punching the punch pattern in the packaging material by moving the punch into the opening for punching the punch pattern in the packaging material. It is another advantage that the knife moves towards the punch to cut the packaging material and to form the individual blank, as it allows for aligning the blank end with the second section of the punch pattern. This in turn allows for aligning the blank end with a top portion of the sleeve / leaf of the packaging material.
[0011] In overall, the arrangement comprising the punch, the die and the knife allows for punching the punch pattern in the packaging material and cutting the packaging material into the individual blank in one station i.e. combining the punch and the cut in the same arrangement. It is advantageous to punch the punch pattern in the packaging material and to cut the packaging material into the individual blank by the same arrangement, as it saves space and cost, compared to the conventional approach which requires two stations. The arrangement further allows for punching the punch pattern in the packaging material and cutting the packaging material into the individual blank in a simple and accurate manner e.g. aligned manner. Thereby, the arrangement allows for preventing, or at least mitigating, a waste of the packaging material e.g. due to a misalignment between the blank end and the punch pattern. An example of such misalignment is when the blank end cuts out a portion of the punched-out pattern. Thus, the arrangement allows for cutting the web of the packaging material into the individual blanks in a cost-effective and environmental-friendly manner.
[0012] The arrangement further allows for punching the punch pattern in the packaging material and cutting the packaging material into the individual blank in a flexible manner, as it allows for adjusting a distance between the knife edge and the die in a flexible manner. An example of the individual blank is a crown-shaped blank which comprises a plurality of sleeves / leaves and a blank end at top portions of the plurality of sleeves / leaves. The crown-shaped blank may be folded and sealed to form a bottleshaped package. The sleeves / leaves may form a top portion of the package. Thus, a length of the sleeves / leaves may define a length of the top portion of the bottle-shaped package. The arrangement allows for adjusting the length of the sleeves / leaves of the blank and thus allows for forming various bottle-shaped packages with various lengths of the top portion.
[0013] The die may have an open end. The knife may be movable towards the open end of the die. The knife may close the open end of the die. The knife edge may be movable towards the open end of the die. The knife edge may close the open end of the die. It may be advantageous that the knife closes the open end of the die, as it may facilitate forming the opening that corresponds to the punch pattern in a simple, reproducible and an accurate manner.
[0014] The die may comprise a main surface. The main surface of the die may be arranged opposite the punch. The main surface of the die may be configured to receive the packaging material. The main surface of the die may be arranged opposite to the punch edge of the punch. Thereby, the die edge may be arranged opposite to the punch edge of the punch. The packaging material may be received in between the punch edge and the die edge of the opening. Thus, when the punch moves into the opening, the punch edge may punch the punch pattern in the packaging material, arranged on the main surface of the die, and may move into the opening.
[0015] The punch pattern may comprise a triangular shape. As used herein, a "triangular shape" refers to a geometric figure with three sides and three vertices, where the sides can be either straight or curved, forming an enclosed space with distinct boundary segments. Examples include traditional straight-sided triangles and shapes like the Reuleaux triangle with curved sides. The second section of the punch pattern is preferably straight, while the first section may be formed by two curved lines, giving the punch pattern a triangular shape with three sides and three vertices, where one side is straight and the other two are curved.
[0016] The first section of the punch pattern may comprise a first section and a second section of the triangular shape. The second section of the punch pattern may comprise a third section of the triangular shape. The first section of the punch pattern may comprise the first side / section / portion of the triangular shape. The second section of the punch pattern may comprise the second side / section / portion of the triangular shape. The third section of the punch pattern may comprise the third side / section / portion of the triangular shape. The open end of the die may correspond to the third side / section / portion of the triangular shape. The shape of the knife may correspond to the third side / section / portion of the triangular shape. Thereby, the knife may close the open end of the die.
[0017] The arrangement may further comprise a biasing element. The biasing element may be arranged adjacent to the punch. The biasing element may be arranged opposite to the die. The biasing element may be a one-sided gripper, a web gripper, a web holder, a web presser, a web pusher, or a web fixer.
[0018] The biasing element may comprise a surface. The biasing element may be movable towards the die such that the surface of the biasing element may hold the packaging material. The biasing element may be movable towards the main surface of the die. The surface of the biasing element may fixedly hold the packaging material in place. The surface of the biasing element may hold the packaging material while the punch moves into the opening and while the knife moves towards the punch. Thus, the biasing element may prevent, or at least mitigate, any movements of the packaging material while the punch moves into the opening and while the knife moves towards the punch. This in turn facilitates punching the punch pattern in the packaging material and cutting the packaging material into the individual blank in a reliable, accurate and reproducible manner.
[0019] The biasing element may be a spring-loaded element. The spring-loaded element may be activated to move towards the die to hold the packaging material in place.
[0020] The arrangement may comprise a plurality of punches. Each punch of the plurality of punches may have a punch edge, forming the punch pattern. The arrangement may comprise a corresponding plurality of dies. Each die of the plurality of dies may be arranged opposite the corresponding punch. Each die of the plurality of dies may comprise a die edge that has a shape corresponding to the first section of the punch pattern.
[0021] The plurality of punches may be arranged adjacent to one another. The plurality of punches may extend along a direction. The plurality of punches may be similar to one another. For instance, the punch edge of the plurality of punches may have the same shape and the same size. The plurality of punches do not need to be similar to one another. For instance, the punch edge of the plurality of punches may have the different shapes and / or different sizes.
[0022] The plurality of dies may be arranged adjacent to one another. The plurality of dies may extend along a direction. The plurality of dies may extend along a direction being parallel with an extension direction of the plurality of the punches. The plurality of dies may be similar to one another. For instance, the die edge of the plurality of dies may have the same shape and the same size. The plurality of dies do not need to be similar to one another. For instance, the die edge of the plurality of dies may have the different shapes and / or different sizes. The shape of each die edge of the plurality of dies may correspond to a first section of a punch pattern of the corresponding punch of the plurality of punches. Thereby, the plurality of punches and the corresponding plurality of dies may allow for punching a plurality of the punch patterns in the packaging material at the same time. For instance, the plurality of punches and the corresponding plurality of dies may allow for punching a plurality of punch patterns in a packaging material to form a crown-shaped packaging material. Each die of the plurality of dies may comprise an open end. The open ends of the plurality of dies may extend along a common straight line. The knife may be movable towards the open ends of the plurality of dies. The knife may close the open ends of the plurality of dies along the common straight line. It may be advantageous that the knife may move towards the open ends of the plurality of dies and may close the open ends of the plurality of dies along the common straight line, as it may allow for cutting the packaging material and forming the blank end that is aligned with the common straight line. For instance, it may allow for forming the individual blank with the blank end aligned with top portions of the crown-shaped packaging blank.
[0023] The arrangement may further comprise another knife. The another knife may be arranged adjacent to the punch. The another knife may be movable towards the knife. The another knife may be attached to the punch. The another knife may move towards the knife when the punch moves into the opening. The another knife may have a knife edge. The knife edge of the another knife may be received by the knife edge of the knife when the knife moves towards the punch. Thereby, the knife and the another knife may act as a scissor and may facilitate cutting the packaging material and forming the individual blank having the blank end.
[0024] According to a second aspect of the invention, a method for cutting a web of packaging material into individual blanks is provided. The method comprises the step of punching a punch pattern in a packaging material by moving a punch having a punch edge that forms a punch pattern into an opening formed by a die edge of a die being arranged opposite the punch and a knife edge of a knife being arranged adjacent to the die. The opening corresponds to the punch pattern. The method further comprises the step of cutting the packaging material by moving the knife towards the punch to form an individual blank that has a blank end which is aligned with a second section of the punch pattern. The die edge has a shape corresponding to a first section of the punch pattern. The knife edge has a shape corresponding to a second section of the punch pattern. The blank end is aligned with the second section of the punch pattern.
[0025] The second aspect may generally present the same or corresponding advantages defined above in relation to the first aspect of the invention. The second aspect of the invention may be performed by the arrangement defined above in relation to the first aspect of the invention.
[0026] The method may further comprise receiving a web of the packaging material on the die of an arrangement e.g. on a main surface of the die of the arrangement. The method may comprise moving the knife towards the punch such that the knife edge is flush with the die, i.e. with the main surface of the die. This may facilitate aligning the knife edge with the open end of the die. The step of receiving may be performed prior to the step of punching. The step of cutting may be performed subsequent to the step of punching. The method may further comprise the step of moving the punch out of the opening. The step of moving the punch out of the opening may be performed subsequent to the step of cutting. The punch may move back to its default / original position. The method may further comprise the step of moving the knife away from the punch. The step of moving the knife away from the punch may be performed subsequent to the step of cutting. The step of moving the punch out of the opening may be performed simultaneously with the step of moving the knife away from the punch. The knife may move back to its default / original position.
