[0003] INNOVATIVE VIBRATION DEPRESSANT FOR LUMINAIRE

[0004] BACKGROUND

[0005] 1. Field

[0006] The disclosure relates to luminaire. More particularly, the disclosure relates to reducing amplification of the vibrations to luminaires.

[0007] 2. Description of the Related Art

[0008] Outdoor luminaires can be attached to lighting poles. The lighting poles are tall and slender are susceptible to wind induced vibrations. The wind induced vibrations can be transferred to luminaires through bolted connections. The bolted connections can wear out, thereby reducing the life span of the luminaire or requiring expensive repairs. Placing a dampener within the lighting pole may reduce wind induced vibrations. However, the dampener may be expensive and installment may be a rather involved process.

[0009] US20040095773A1 relates to a universal mount luminaire is disclosed. The luminaire has a support arm which has integrated therein structure for both davit arm mounting and for direct pole mounting. The universal mount luminaire of the present invention also provides a leveling mechanism within the support mount or support arm so that in davit arm mounting, the luminaire may be properly angularly adjusted.

[0010] JP2019140051A relates to a lighting device that includes a light emitting unit, a bracket, a vibration-proof member to be attached to the bracket, and a fixing member for fixing the vibration-proof member to an object to be mounted. The anti -vibration member comes into pressure contact with the tubular portion through which the fixing member is inserted, the annular protrusion protruding outward from the outer peripheral surface of the tubular portion, the holding groove of the bracket, and the object to be mounted. It has a first elastic protrusion and a second elastic protrusion that presses and contacts the fixing member.

[0011] Additionally, there is perception that if a pole can survive a heavy fixture lighting the pole can survive with a lighter weight Light Emitting Diode (LED) luminaire. This is not always true as even light weight fixtures pole may see wind induced loads which could cause damage to luminaire. 2024PF80257

[0034] Certain embodiments presented herein may provide a low-cost molded rubber part that integrated with a pole claim for a streetlight. The molded rubber part helps with vibration dampening, resulting in avoidance of the amplification of the bending amplitude to mitigate failures of outdoor fixtures.

[0035] Referring now to Fig. 1, there is illustrated a streetlight 100 in accordance with an embodiment of the disclosure. The streetlight 100 can be mounted adjacent to a road and provide high lumens light to passengers in vehicles. The streetlight 100 can be about 10-50 ft tall, depending on the brightness of the light. Generally, the streetlight 100 is higher when brighter light is emitted.

[0036] The streetlight 100 comprises a pole 105, and a luminaire 110. The luminaire 110 is generally a case that houses the light source. The case is mounted towards the top of the pole 105. The light source can be, for example, light emitting diodes (LEDs). The luminaire 110 includes an interface that fastens the luminaire 110 to the pole 105.

[0037] The slender nature of the pole 105 and the weight of the luminaire 110 makes it susceptible to the wind. The wind causes vibrations on the interface connecting the luminaire 110 to the pole 105. The vibrations create alternating displacement patterns and bending that causes fatigue failure in the fastening of the luminaire 110 to the pole. However, the luminaire 110 includes a vibration depressor. In certain embodiments, the vibration depressors may dampen the vibration and reduce the bending amplitude to mitigate failures.

[0038] Referring now to Fig. 2, there is illustrated a block diagram of a luminaire 110 in accordance with an embodiment of the disclosure. The luminaire 110 includes a chassis 205, bolts 210, vibration depressors 215, brackets 217, light source 220, and a screen 225.

[0039] The chassis 205 can receive the light source 220 and be covered by the screen 225. The light source 220 can include, for example, light emitting diodes (LEDs), though it is not so limited. The screen 225 protects the light source 220 from the elements.

[0040] The chassis 205 includes a hole 205a, and a recess 205b. The luminaire 110 receives the pole 105 through the hole 205a, such that one end of the pole 105 is disposed in the recess 205b. The end of the pole 105 can be fastened into the recess 205b by the brackets 2024PF80257

[0041] 5

[0042] 217 that are screwed in by bolts 210. In certain embodiments, the brackets 217 can comprises metallic material.

[0043] The vibration depressors 215 disposed such that there at least one portion that is disposed between the head of the bolts 210 and the bracket 217, at least one portion that is disposed between the bracket 217 and the chassis 205, at least one portion between the bolt 210 and the chassis 205, and at least one portion that is between the brackets 217 and the pole 105.

[0044] In certain embodiments, the vibration depressors 215 can be made of neoprene rubber, and manufactured by injection molding. The neoprene rubber may have the least stiffness during compression. Accordingly, during movement of the pole 105 due to the wind, the vibration depressors 215, the energy of the vibration is absorbed by the vibration depressors 215 due the higher damping of the neoprene rubber. The vibration depressors 215 can absorb energy from movement in all three spatial dimensional directions.

[0045] A cross section along line A - A’ will be described below.

[0046] Referring to Fig. 3, there is illustrated a cross section of the luminaire 110 in accordance with an embodiment of the disclosure. The pole 105 is received by the recess 205b of the luminaire 110. Bracket 217 is disposed over the pole 105. Bolts 210 are apply downward pressure to the bracket 217, causing the bracket 217 to apply a downward for to the pole 105, securing it into the recess 205b of the luminaire 110.

[0047] The vibration depressors 215 includes a connection layer 215a, an intermediate layer 215b, a countersunk 215c, and bridge 215d. The vibration depressor 215 is disposed such that the connection layer is disposed between the head of the bolts 210 and the top of bracket 217, and the side surface of the bolt 210 and the surface of the bracket 217 that forms a through hole. The intermediate layer 215b is disposed between the bottom of the bracket 217 and the chassis 205. The countersunk 215c is disposed between the bolt 210 and the chassis 205. The bridge 215d is disposed between the bracket 217 and the pole 105.

[0048] The vibration depressor 215 can compress during displacement in all three spatial directions, thereby reducing stress onto the bolts 210 and the bracket 217. For example, during the displacement along the X and Z axis, the countersunk 215c and the portion of the connection layer 215a between the bolt 210 and the bracket 217, compress and reduce stress between the sides of the bolt 210 and the sides of the through hole of the bracket 217 and between the bolt 210 and the chassis 205. During displacement along the Y axis, the intermediate layer 215b and the bridge 215d compress, reducing the stress between the bracket 217 and the chassis 205 and the pole 105 and the bracket 217. 2024PF80257

On each end of the arch 217a can be through holes 217b configured to receive bolts 210 (not shown). The arch 217a can be configured to make contact with the curvature of a pole 105 (not shown). When bolts 210 are inserted into the through holes 217b, the arch 271a can apply a downward force against the pole 105, forcing it into recess 205b of the chassis of the luminaire 205. 2024PF80257

The caps 415 can be disposed to make contact with one surface of the bracket 217. The distance between the outer cylinders 410a, 410b can be approximately the same as the width of the bracket 217, such that the outer cylinders 410a, 410b make contact with the opposite surface of the bracket 217. The bridge 215d can extend from the tops of the outer cylinders 410a, 410b and make continuous contact with the arch 217a. In certain embodiments, an adhesive may adhere the bridge 215d to the arch 217a.

[0058] In certain embodiments, the vibration depressor may 215 may not include the bridge 420. Referring now to Fig. 4C, there is illustrated a vibration depressor 215 in accordance with another embodiment of the disclosure.
