Description

[0001] SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR PROVIDING A PORTABLE DISPLAY

[0002] CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS

[0003] This application claims the benefit of priority from U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 63 / 688,395, filed August 29, 2024 the contents of which are incorporated by reference in their entirety.

[0004] FIELD OF THE DISCLOSURE

[0005] The disclosure herein relates to systems and methods for providing portable displays. In particular, but not exclusively, the disclosure relates to portable screens for displaying advertisements in all lighting and weather conditions.

[0006] BACKGROUND

[0007] It is often useful to display information to subjects within one’s surroundings. As visual displays are particularly good at displaying such information, visual displays may be carried by individuals as they move from location to location. The information may also be displayed to the individuals through roadside display boards, known as signages may be designed to persuade receivers of the merits of a given product or service.

[0008] The information being displayed by such devices may be used to indicate, for example, safety information to other pedestrians of road users, such as alerting them that the wearer is slowing down, speeding up, turning right, turning left or the like. Further, these devices may display location-based advertisements for the offers being offered at the nearby markets, theaters, malls, etc. These devices present current offers of one or more of nearby vendors to the local people in the market areas or roads.

[0009] However, these display screens are subject to varying lightning and weather conditions as being used in outdoor areas. These displays may produce glare in low light environments such as during night-time or cloudy days. Also, these displays do not have the capability to adjust the lightning in accordance with the surrounding light. Moreover, in high temperature regions, the temperature of the display screens might become very high which might rapidly drop its luminous rate, resulting in light attenuation. Consequently, the brightness of the display screen decreases over time. There is a need therefore to provide a display screen capable of outdoor use in all lighting and weather conditions. The invention described herein addresses the above-described needs.

[0048] The abovementioned exemplary configuration of the display screen makes it suitable to be mounted on a service delivery bag of a delivery person. In other examples, the display screen my have different dimensions and specifications to suit requirements for example billboards typically would require larger screen sizes of say 27 inch by 40 inch, but could be much larger than that say 14 foot by 48 foot for 672 square feet of advertising space, such screens may well have a brightness of 5000 nits or more to suit requirements.

[0049] The various components of the display screen 200 are shown in Fig. 2A. The display screen 200 comprises a processing unit 202 which controls all the other components of the display screen 200 and also processes the captured viewers’ data and the location data. In an exemplary embodiment, the processing unit 202 can be a Raspberry Pi 5 single board computer which is a controlling host for all the connected peripheral devices. Alternatively, the processing unit 202 can be an embedded system executing software or firmware.

[0050] The display screen 200 may comprise one or more cameras to capture the images of nearby areas and individuals around the display screen. The camera can be 200 degrees RGB Cameras 206 used to deliver colored images of people and objects by capturing light in red, green, and blue wavelengths (RGB). The RGB camera 206 is equipped with a standard CMOS sensor through which the colored images of persons and objects are acquired. The cameras can also be Infrared cameras 204 used to capture images during night time or places where intensity of light is low. The display screen 200 may comprise one or more of any of the cameras for capturing the images. The display screen 200 may also comprise a light sensor 208 used to measure the intensity of light in the vicinity of the display screen 200. The processing unit 202 will activate the cameras based on the intensity of light measured by the light sensor 208. For example, in case of darkness the light sensor 208 will provide the information to the processing unit 202 which will activate the Infrared cameras 204 for capturing the vicinity images. The light sensor 208 may also comprise day and night modes which can be manually selected or adjusted automatically. The light sensor 208 is also configured to provide inputs to a lightning control mechanism of the display screen 200 to control the screen brightness. The details of lightning control mechanism are discussed below.

[0051] The display screen 200 also comprises one or more gravity sensors 210 such as a Gyroscope, an Accelerometer, etc. The gravity sensors 210 are configured to detect the orientation of the display screen 200 and rotate the display accordingly. The gravity sensors 210 makes the screen 200 compatible to be used in any orientation. Further, in case the display screen 200 is mounted on a moving vehicle, the accelerometer can measure the forces of acceleration, or 'G-forces', that act upon the vehicle. These forces could be due to sudden changes in direction, braking, or impact, such as during a collision. The cameras 204, 206 are then automatically activated to detect these incidents. A location sensor 212 is provided to capture the location of the display screen 200 on which advertisement is being presented. The location sensor 212 may be based on any Global navigation satellite system (GNSS) such as Global Positioning System (GPS), Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS), BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS), Galileo, Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS), Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS) to capture the location information. A screen temperature sensor 214 is also provided to measure the temperature of the display screen 200 and take appropriate actions. High power consumption under direct outdoor sunlight may cause overheating and black screen. The screen temperature sensor 214 monitors the open cell temperature. If the open cell temperature is above a predefined threshold, the intensity of the display screen 200 is reduced until the temperature decreases to a safe limit. In an exemplary embodiment, if the open cell temperature is above 80 degrees Celsius, the screen is dimmed until the temp is below 70 degrees Celsius.

[0052] The display screen 200 may also comprise optional solar panels 220 to provide power to the display screen 200 for operating the various components and charge the battery 230. The battery 230 is connected to a charging and temperature sensor 228 which monitors the battery 230 status. In case of any detected deviation from the standard parameters, a notification is provided to either to the person carrying the display screen 200 or to a third party responsible for maintaining the display screen 200. In an exemplary embodiment, the display screen 200 should maintain a battery life of about 6-8 hours in a single charge. However, an always ON display reduces the battery life and leads to wastage of resources. The screen cameras 204, 206 may monitor the people in the field of view (FOV). In case there are no people in the camera FOV, the brightness of the display screen 200 is dimmed to save battery power. This may happen during late nights or in case of natural calamities in the vicinity of the display screen 200. The light sensor 208 may also dynamically adjust the screen brightness based on the surrounding lights to optimize battery life. The charging and temperature sensor 228 may also monitor the battery 230 temperature. If battery working temperature is approaching a predefined threshold, the brightness of the display screen 200 is dimmed until the battery 230 temperature is within the safe limits.

[0053] The display screen 200 may also comprise a physical sim or USB port 232 which may be connected to update the processing unit 202 software. The communication module 226 may also comprise interface for connecting with a cloud network. The display screen 200 may also comprise a memory 224 to store the images captured by the cameras 204, 206 and the data processed by the processing unit 202.

[0054] The above-mentioned components of the display screen 200 are exemplary in nature and should not limit the scope of the invention. The display screen 200 may contain one or more of the components as required for the invention. Further, the display screen 200 may also contain additional components not disclosed herein.

[0055] Referring now to Fig. 2B which illustrates a lightning control mechanism of the display screen 200 according to an aspect of the present invention. The display screen 200 comprises a backlight control 234 to adjust the overall output of the LED array that makes up the set’s backlight. The backlight control 234 changes the display backlight in accordance with the surrounding light as measured by the light sensor 208 to increase the visibility in low light conditions. The backlight control may be achieved using mini-LED backlight 236 that uses a smaller LED chip to produce the same brightness as a larger chip. The miniaturized design allows for finer control of lighting levels, which makes it ideal for use in display screens. The mini-LED backlight 236 may provide brighter illumination with less power consumption, reducing the manufacturing costs. The miniLED backlight 236 may also encompass local dimming technology that allows the darkening of specific areas of the screen to create contrast and more natural images. Local dimming in these displays works by dimming or turning off the backlight in specific zones of the screen to improve contrast and black levels. This provides higher contrast ratio and less average power consumption by the display screen 200.

[0056] The display screen 200 may also comprise an HDMI to Low-Voltage Differential Signaling (LVDS) converter. The LVDS technology delivers high data rates while consuming less power than any other interfacing technologies. The LVDS cables are used for transporting video data from graphics adapters (not shown) to the display screen 200 at higher data rates. The LVDS provides benefits of making the system compatible to low-voltage power supply, low noise generation, higher data transmission rates and low power consumption.

[0057] The display screen 200 may be subject to direct sunlight increasing the temperature of the screen above the safe levels reducing the screen life. A cooling mechanism is provided that allows the processor to be cooled without vents for outdoor use as illustrated in Figs. 3A and 3B. Fig. 3A illustrates a backside view 300 of the display screen comprising a housing 302 made of any suitable material which can withstand the varying weather conditions. In an exemplary embodiment, the housing or shell of the display screen is made of plastic or aluminum. Alternatively, the screen housing comprises plastic body with Cooling Aluminum Heatsink (CAH) 306 at the back of it. CAH is designed to effectively dissipate heat from the screen processing unit 202. In addition to the CAH, side cooling fans 304 are mounted aside to the CAH 306. The cooling fans 304 are retrofittable and can be mounted and detached from the housing 302. The fans 304 provide lateral cooling to the heatsink to dissipate the processing unit heat. The fans 304 are secured to the housing 302 through a fan cover 310 which is mechanically fitted to the housing through screws. The fans can be removed from the housing for service or maintenance purposes.

[0058] The fans 304 are connected to the screen power supply through electrical connectors 308. These connectors internally connect to the power supply (e.g. battery 230) to operate the fans 304. The fans 304 are automatically activated when the screen temperature increases above the predefined level which is determined by the screen temperature sensor 214. The fans stop automatically when the screen temperature is within the safe limits. Fig. 3A shows two fans 304 mounted in the screen housing 302. Any number of fans may be mounted without limiting the scope of the invention. Moreover, any number of mounted fans may be operated at a particular time to optimize the power consumption.

[0059] Figs. 4A and 4B illustrate exemplary applications and mounting environments for the portable display system according to aspects of the present disclosure. These figures demonstrate the versatility of the system for use in mobile advertising and information display.

[0060] Fig. 4A illustrates an exemplary attachment of the portable display system 400 on a wearable item, specifically a delivery bag 402. In this embodiment, the user may be a service delivery person, and the wearable item 402 is a bag used for transporting goods, such as food. The portable display system 400 is shown mounted on the rear-facing side of the delivery bag 402, making it visible to observers located behind the user. The system 400 may be secured to the bag 402 through integrated connectors or, alternatively, may be placed within a transparent pocket designed to accommodate the display system. This configuration allows for the display of targeted advertisements, safety signals, or other information to pedestrians and other road users.

[0061] Fig. 4B illustrates another exemplary attachment of the portable display system 400' on a vehicle 402'. The prime notation (') indicates components that are similar in function to their unprimed counterparts but are shown in a different embodiment. Here, the portable display system 400' is mounted on the side of a vehicle 402', such as a delivery van or truck. This application allows for a larger-scale mobile billboard, displaying advertisements or other information to a wide audience as the vehicle travels its route or is parked in various locations. The system's robust, weather-resistant design and thermal management capabilities make it well- suited for such external vehicle mounting.

[0062] It is to be understood that the applications shown in Figs. 4A and 4B are exemplary and not limiting. The portable display system can be mounted on various other mobile or stationary platforms as required by a particular application, benefiting from its self-contained power and environmental management features.

[0063] Fig. 5 is a flowchart illustrating a method 500 for managing a portable display system according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The method outlines a series of steps performed by the processing unit (202) to dynamically manage the system's display content, power consumption, and thermal state, ensuring optimal performance and longevity in varying outdoor conditions.

[0064] The method begins at START and proceeds to a block of Gather Parallel Inputs, which includes several data-gathering steps that may occur concurrently or sequentially to inform the system's operation.

[0065] At step 504, Measure Ambient Light, the system utilizes at least one light sensor (208) to measure the intensity of the surrounding light. This information is critical for optimizing the display's visibility and power usage. For example, in bright, direct sunlight, the processing unit (202) may increase the brightness of the display panel (108) towards its maximum output (e.g., 2000 nits) to ensure the content remains legible. Conversely, during nighttime or on an overcast day, the processing unit can reduce the brightness to prevent glare and conserve the battery (230), as described on page 9 of the specification.

[0066] At step 506, Detect Viewer Presence, the system employs an image capturing device, such as an RGB camera (206) or an infrared camera (204), to monitor the field of view (FOV) in front of the display. The processing unit (202) analyzes the captured images to determine if any viewers are present. As detailed on page 9, if no people are detected in the camera's FOV, for instance, when the user is in a deserted area, the processing unit can automatically dim the display screen to save battery power. The brightness is restored when a viewer re-enters the FOV.

[0067] At step 508, Gather Contextual Data, the system collects additional information from various sensors to tailor the displayed content. This includes:

[0068] Location Data: A location sensor (212), such as a GPS module, determines the real-time geographic position of the system. This allows for the display of location-based advertisements or information, as supported by the disclosure on page 6. For example, if the system detects it is near a specific store, it may display a promotion for that store.

[0069] Orientation Data: A gravity sensor (210), such as a gyroscope or accelerometer, detects the physical orientation of the display system. As mentioned on page 8, this allows the processing unit to automatically rotate the displayed content to match the screen's orientation, whether it is being held in a landscape or portrait mode.

[0070] Remote Data: A communication module (226) establishes a connection with a remote server (112) to receive updated content, such as new advertisements, announcements, or software updates, as described on page 6.

[0071] At step 510, Process Inputs & Display Content, the processing unit (202) synthesizes all the data gathered in the preceding steps (504, 506, 508). It makes a holistic decision on what content to display and at what initial brightness level, and then renders this content on the display panel (108).

[0072] The method then enters a continuous thermal management loop, starting at step 512, Monitor Temperature. The processing unit (202) continuously receives temperature data from at least one temperature sensor. This can include a screen temperature sensor (214) monitoring the open cell temperature of the display panel and / or a charging and temperature sensor (228) monitoring the temperature of the battery (230), as detailed on pages 8 and 9. At decision block 514, Temperature > Threshold?, the monitored temperature is compared against a predefined safety threshold. For example, as provided on page 8, the threshold for the open cell temperature may be set to 80°C. If the measured temperature does not exceed this threshold (the "No" path), the system is operating within safe limits, and the method loops back to step 512 to continue monitoring.

[0073] If the measured temperature exceeds the threshold (the "Yes" path), the method proceeds to Activate Corrective Actions. This involves one or both of the following steps:

[0074] At step 518, Automatically Reduce Brightness, the processing unit (202) automatically dims the display panel (108). Reducing the brightness of the mini-LED backlight (236) is an effective way to lower power consumption and, consequently, the heat generated by the display panel, as supported by the disclosures on pages 8 and 9.

[0075] At step 520, Activate Cooling Fan, the processing unit (202) sends a signal to activate the side cooling fans (304). As described on page 11 , these fans provide active cooling by directing airflow across the heatsink (306), thereby dissipating heat from the processing unit and other internal components.

[0076] After activating corrective actions, the method loops back to step 512, Monitor Temperature. This creates a closed-loop control system that continuously works to bring the system's temperature back down below the threshold and maintain it within a safe operating range. This entire process ensures the portable display system can operate reliably for extended periods in challenging outdoor environments.
