No. 2022 / 0349252 and titled “SELF-TENSIONING MAGNETIC TRACKS AND TRACK ASSEMBLIES”, each of which is hereby fully incorporated by reference herein.
[0010] TECHNICAL FIELD
[0011] The disclosed embodiments relate generally to the field of retractable screens, and more particularly, to motorized retractable screens.
[0012] OVERVIEW
[0013] Over the past two decades, motorized retractable screens have gained popularity due to their utility and versatility for temporarily enclosing spaces. For example, many restaurants and other businesses having patios / outdoor areas utilize retractable screens to temporarily enclose these areas thereby creating environmentally controlled areas that are shielded from inclement weather conditions (e.g., windy and / or cold weather conditions). These retractable screens systems typically have side tracks / track assemblies that receive and hold the screen, while permitting the screen to be moved upward and downward, and maintain the screen in a tight, aesthetically pleasing manner once the screen has been deployed.
[0014] In some retractable screens systems, interlocks attached to the sides of the screen are used to provide the connection with side tracks / track assemblies that permits the screen to be moved upward and downward. One type of interlock design uses a flexible plastic or rubber cord attached to an edge of the screen by a seam material that is folded over the cord and attached to each side of the screen (e.g., with glue and / or stitching). This forms an interlock having a generally circular cross section suited to be held within a C-shaped channel of the side tracks / track assemblies. The cord material is generally stiff enough to prevent the cord from deforming and allowing the interlock to be pulled out from the C-shaped channel (e.g., due to strong winds).
[0015] In many installations, retractable screen systems remain installed and in service year round, thereby exposing the screen and interlock materials to various temperature and weather extremes. Through careful observation and study, it has been observed that conventional plastic and rubber cord materials stiffen in cold weather, which may inhibit proper operation and / or cause degradation to the cord materials.
[0016] For example, in cold temperatures, a straight portion of interlock in a lowered screen may resist bending and cause the screen to roll up improperly on a roller tube when retracted. Conversely, a curved portion of interlock in a rolled up screen may have a tendency to retain a curved shape which may cause the interlock to catch or jam up on C-shaped channel segments of one or more side tracks / track assemblies when lowered to an extended position. Furthermore, rolling and unrolling a retractable screen when interlock cords are stiffened from cold weather may induce cracking or other fatigue in the cord materials, which may significantly shorten the lifespan of the retractable screen.
[0017] Therefore, for all the reasons stated above, and the reasons stated below, there is a need in the art for an improved screen interlock for retractable screen systems.
[0018] Thus, it is a primary object of the disclosure to provide a screen interlock for retractable screen systems that improves upon the state of the art.

Additionally or alternatively, in one or more arrangements, screen 14 includes an interlock 62 extending along top edge 50 of screen 14 to facilitate operable connection of screen 14 with roller tube assembly 16. Additionally or alternatively, in one or more arrangements, screen 14 includes an interlock 64 extending along bottom edge 52 of screen 14 to facilitate operable connection of screen 14 with bottom bar assembly 22.
[0084] Interlocks 60 / 62 / 64 are formed of any suitable size, shape, and design, and are configured to operably connect screen with a connection feature of screen receivers 106 of track assemblies 20 (and / or roller tube assembly 16 and / or bottom bar assembly 22). In one or more arrangements, as is shown, interlocks 60, 62, and 64 are implemented using the improved interlock system 200 disclosed herein.
[0085] However, the embodiments are not so limited. Rather, it is contemplated that in some various arrangements, one or more interlocks 60, 62, and / or 64 may be implemented using various types of interlocks including but not limited to, for example, interlock system 200, solid cord interlocks (also known as keder interlocks), zipper interlocks, beaded chain, low-profile interlocks or any other interlock known in the art). Some additional interlocks implementations are discussed in more detail in U.S. Pat. Pub. No. 2021 / 0262284 titled “Retractable Screen Systems” and published August 26, 2021, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety.
[0086] Roller Tube Assembly 16:

[0089] Roller tube 74 is formed of any suitable size, shape, and design upon which screen 14 may wrap around to facilitate opening or closing of screen 14 when roller tube 74 is rotated. For instance, when roller tube assembly 16 rotates in a first rotational direction, screen 14 wraps around the exterior surface of the roller tube 74 thereby opening the screen 14, and when roller tube assembly 16 rotates in a second rotational direction, opposite the first rotational direction, screen 14 unwraps from around roller tube 74 thereby closing screen 14.
[0090] In the arrangement shown, as one example, roller tube 74 is a generally elongated cylindrical shaped exterior surface 82 that extends a length between opposing ends 76 76.
[0091] In one or more arrangements, system 10 may utilize an interlock 62 to connect the upper end of screen 14 to a receiver 84 of roller tube 74.
[0092] Receiver 84 is formed of any suitable size, shape, and design, and is configured to receive and hold onto top edge 50 of screen 14. In the arrangement shown, as one example, receiver 84 is a c-shaped channel 86 in an exterior surface 82 configured to receive and hold a circular interlock 62 via an opening 88 at an outer end of channel 86. However, the embodiments are not so limited. Rather, it is contemplated that in one or more arrangements, channel 86 may be shaped to receive an interlock 62 of any shape (e.g., circular, triangular, square, rectangular shape, T-shaped, V-shaped, L-shaped, U-shaped, or any other shape). Moreover, it is contemplated that in one or more arrangements, receivers 84 may additionally or alternatively connect with screen 14 using various known method and / or means including but not limited to, for example, clamps, snaps, pins, fasteners, adhesive bonding, chemical bonding, welding, stitching, and / or any other connection means or method for connecting. Length Adjustment Members 80:
[0093] In one or more arrangements, roller tube assembly 16 includes length adjustment members 80 to extend the length of one or both ends of roller tube 74. Length adjustment members 80 are formed of any suitable size, shape, and design and are configured to adjust effective length of roller tube 74. As used herein, “effective length” refers to the combined length of a combination of roller tube 74 and any members attached to ends of the roller tube (e.g., length adjustment members 80). As an illustrative example, consider a hypothetical tube extending 48 inches between opposing ends of the hypothetical tube. If a 3-inch length extension member is attached to one end of the hypothetical tube, the effective length of the tube is 51 inches. If that same 3-inch extension member is slid outward two inches, the effective length of the tube is 53 inches.
[0094] In the arrangement shown, as one example, length adjustment member 80 is a generally cylindrical shaped collar having an exterior surface 94 extending between opposing ends 92. In one or more arrangements, the cylindrical exterior surface 94 of length adjustment member 80 has similar shape to that of exterior surface 82 of roller tube 74, for example, with c-shaped channels of one or more receivers 104 extending between ends 92 to facilitate insertion of interlock 62 into the c-shaped channels 86 of receivers 84 of roller tube 74. However, the embodiments are not so limited. Rather, it is contemplated that in one of more arrangements, c- shaped channels 86 / receivers 84 may be omitted from length adjustment member 80. In such embodiments, interlock62 at top edge 50 of screen 14 may be inserted into c-shaped channels 86 / receivers 84 of roller tube 74 prior to attaching length adjustment member 80.
[0095] In the arrangement shown, length adjustment member 80 has a collar shape configured to fit over and operably connected to an end 76 of roller tube 74 by a connection member 96 such as an inner tube or axle.
[0096] In various implementations, the effective length may be adjusted using various mechanisms including, for example, by changing the position where length adjustment member 80 is attached to connection member 96 and / or the position where connection member 96 attaches to roller tube 74. The position at which connection member 96 attaches to roller tube 74 and / or length adjustment member 80 may be secured using any manner, method or means known in the art including but not limited to, for example, fasteners (e.g., screws, bolts, staples, rivets, and the like) compression collar, threading, frictional fittings, adhesive bonding, chemical bonding, welding, and / or any other connection means or method.
[0097] In one or more arrangements, length adjustment member 80 may be moved to and secured at an infinite number of positions relative to roller tube 74, thereby facilitating adjustment of effective length to an infinite number of different lengths.
[0098] In one or more arrangements, system 10 includes multiple fixed length adjustment members 80 of different lengths that can be added and / or removed from roller tube 74 to facilitate adjustment of roller tube 74 to various effective lengths, as required. Additionally or alternatively, in one or more arrangements, length adjustment member 80 may be adjustable in length. For example, in one or more arrangements, length adjustment member 80 may have a telescopic arrangement allowing length of length adjustment member 80 to be increased or decreased as required.
[0099] By adjusting the effective length of roller tube 74, system 10 may be adjusted so as to adjust the amount of screen 14 that extends beyond ends 76 of roller tube 74 to accommodate the thicker interlock 60 / 200 (e.g., cord 204 and / or seams 202) and thereby prevent interlocks 60 from increasing circumference when screen 14 is rolled up.
[0100] Similarly, the effective length of roller tube 74 may be adjusted so that screen 14, seam 202, and / or cord 204 of interlock 60 engages the exterior surface of roller tube 74 and / or length adjustment member 80 as roller tube 74 is turned. By adjusting the effective length so either screen 14, seam 202, and / or cord 204 of interlock 60 are rolled up as roller tube 74 is turned, the effective rate at which one side of screen 14 is deployed or retracted as roller tube 74 is rotated may be adjusted.
[0101] Motor Assembly 18 :
[0102] In the arrangement shown, as one example, system 10 having track assemblies 20 includes a motor assembly 18. Motor assembly 18 is formed of any suitable size, shape, and design and is configured to facilitate motorized operation of system 10.
[0103] Motor assembly 18 may be formed of any form of a motor and may be connected to roller tube assembly 16 in any manner that facilitates rotation of roller tube assembly 16. In the arrangement shown, as one example, motor assembly 18 is an electric motor that is positioned within the hollow interior of roller tube assembly 16 adjacent an end of roller tube assembly 16. Positioning motor assembly 18 within the hollow interior of roller tube assembly 16 provides a sleek arrangement wherein motor assembly 18 is contained within other components of the system 10 thereby minimizing the size and space requirements for the system 10.
[0104] In one or more arrangements, motor assembly 18 is a self-contained assembly including a motor, gear assembly, drive wheel and electronic controller assembly, among other components. In this self-contained assembly arrangement, with the installation of a single component, the motor assembly 18 within roller tube assembly 16 the system 10 is motorized, which provides convenience, minimal installation, ease of use and an aesthetic appearance. In one or more arrangements, motor assembly 18 is controlled by passing control signals to the motor assembly 18 through a wired connection. In another arrangement, motor assembly 18 is controlled by wireless control by passing control signals to the motor assembly 18 through a wireless connection to an antenna connected to motor assembly 18.
[0105] In one or more arrangements, motor assembly 18 is connected to an external power source by a wired connection such as by connection to line power of a house or building thereby providing motor assembly 18 an unlimited power source. Alternatively, motor assembly 18 is connected to a battery power source, a solar module or solar cell, or any combination thereof such as connection to line power with battery back-up and a solar cell for recharging the batteries is hereby contemplated for use.
[0106] In the arrangement shown, as one example, once the roller tube assembly 16 is assembled, with motor assembly 18 therein, the roller tube assembly 16 is installed. In doing so, the outward ends of roller tube assembly 16 are connected to the bracket members 46 and the roller tube assembly 16 is able to rotate within the hollow interior of an installation recess or housing, thereby raising and / or lowering the screen 14.
[0107] Bracket Members 46:
[0108] Bracket members 46 (not shown) are formed of any suitable size, shape, and design and are configured to facilitate connection of roller tube assembly 16 to structure 24. In one or more arrangements, bracket members 46 have a first portion configured to operably connect with roller tube assembly 16 (e.g., to an end 76 of roller tube 74 and / or to motor assembly 18 connected to roller tube 74) and a second portion configured to connect with the structure 24 (e.g., using fasteners). However, the arrangements are not so limited. Rather, it is contemplated that in some various arrangements may utilitize various additional or alternative bracket arrangements for installation of roller tube assembly.
[0109] Track Assemblies 20:
[0110] Track assemblies 20 are formed of any suitable size, shape, and design, and are configured to operably connect side edges 54 of screen 14 with sides 28 of opening 26 while permitting screen 14 to be moved upward and downward along track assemblies 20. In the arrangement shown, as one example, track assemblies 20 each include a screen receiver 106, a track 108, and retainers 110 among other components.
[0111] Screen Receiver 106:
[0112] Screen receiver 106 is formed of any suitable size, shape, and design and is configured to be positioned within elongate channel 146 of track 108 and operably connect side edge 54 of screen 14 with track 108. In the arrangement shown, as one example, screen receiver 106 has an elongated generally rectangular planar shaped body 114 having a screen side surface 116 and an opposing side surface 118 extending between opposing side edges 124 from an upper end 120 to a lower end 122. In this example arrangement, screen receiver 106 has a first channel 126 positioned on the screen side surface 116. Channel 126 is formed of any suitable size, shape, and design and is configured to receive and hold a side interlock 60 connected to a side edge 54 of screen 14 while permitting screen 14 to be moved upward and downward in operation. In the arrangement shown, as one example, channel 126 is a c-shaped channel configured to receive and hold side circular interlock 60 via opening 128 of c-shaped channel 126 at upper end 120 of screen receiver 106. However, the embodiments are not so limited. Rather, it is contemplated that in one or more arrangements, channel 86 may be shaped to receive an interlock 60 of any shape (e.g., circular, triangular, square, rectangular shape, T-shape, V-shape, L-shape, U-shape, or any other shape).
[0113] In one or more arrangements, screen receiver 106 includes a second channel 130 positioned on opposing side surface 118 of body 114 of screen receiver 106. Channel 130 is formed of any suitable size, shape, and design and is configured to receive and hold a magnetic component 172 to facilitate magnetic coupling of screen receiver 106 with track 108. In the arrangement shown, channel 130 is a c-shaped channel configured to receive and hold a generally rectangular magnetic components 172 that are inserted into channel 130 via openings 132 at upper end 120 or lower end 122. Magnetic component 172 may then be moved to a desired position along channel 130 (e.g., to align with a magnetic component 170 of track 108) and secured in place. In one or more arrangements, magnetic component 172 is secured in place by placing crimps 134 in channel 130 on each side of magnetic component 172. However, the arrangements are not so limited. Rather, it is contemplated that magnetic component 172 may be secured at a desired position in channel 130 using various means and / or methods including but not limited to, for example, crimping, frictional fittings, adhesive bonding, chemical bonding, welding, stitching, sewing, fasteners (e.g., staples, screws, nails, bolts, rivets, etc.), and / or any other connection means or method).
[0114] Funnel 140:
[0115] In one or more arrangements, screen receiver 106 includes a funnel 140. Funnel 140 is formed of any suitable size, shape, and design and is configured to help facilitate the insertion of interlock 60 into the c-shaped channel 126 of screen receiver 106. In the arrangement shown, as one example, a funnel 140 is shown connected to opening 128 of channel 126 at the upper end of the screen receiver 106 so as to facilitate the insertion of interlock 60. In the arrangement shown, as one example, the upper end of funnel 140 is generally cone shaped and is angled such that it widens as it extends upward.
[0116] In the arrangement shown, as one example, funnel 140 includes an leg 142 that extends downward from the lower end of the cone of funnel 140 that fits within a channel 130 of screen receiver 106 that receives the magnets of the screen receiver 106. The engagement between the leg 142 within the channel 130 connects funnel 140 to screen receiver 106. However, any other manner, method or means of connecting funnel 140 to screen receiver 106 is hereby contemplated for use such as fastening, screwing, bolting, welding, crimping, pinning, adhering, friction fitting or the like. In the arrangement shown, as one example, the cone at the upper end of funnel 140 includes a slot 144. In the arrangement shown, as one example, when leg 142 of funnel 140 is inserted within the channel 130 of screen receiver 106, the slot 144 of funnel 140 aligns with the open slot in channel 130 thereby providing access for screen material 56 into the slot of screen receiver 106. The installation of funnel 140 eases the insertion of screen material as it unrolls downwards 56 and interlock 60 into screen receiver 106. In addition, by adding funnel 140 as a second separate piece, which is preferably made out of a smooth yet durable plastic, this reduces the cost of the system 10 while improving performance and longevity.
[0117] Track 108:
[0118] Track 108 is formed of any suitable size, shape, and design and is configured to be attached to structure 24 along a side 28 of opening 26 and provide an elongate channel 146 configured to receive and hold screen receiver 106 when track assembly 20 is assembled.
[0119] In the arrangement shown, as one example, track 108 has a generally rectangular elongated shape extending from an upper end 148 to a lower end 150 with opposing side walls 152 extending between a screen facing side 154 and a screen opposing side 156. In the arrangement shown, elongate channel 146 is a generally c-shaped channel formed by the side walls 152 and an end wall 160 extending between the opposing side wall 152 with a channel opening 158 in screen facing side 154.
[0120] In one or more arrangements, elongate channel 146 is configured to receive and hold screen receiver 106 within a compartment 162 between side walls 152 that is formed by a set of inner partitions 164 and a set of outer partitions 166. Inner partitions 164 are positioned on opposing side walls 152 closer towards screen facing side 154 and extend inward a distance towards the interior of the elongate channel 146. Outer partitions 166 are positioned on opposing side walls 152 further from screen facing side 154 and extend inward a distance towards the interior of the elongate channel 146. The compartment 162 is adapted to securely receive the screen receiver 106 while allowing for lateral movement of screen receiver 106 toward and away from screen 14 between inner partitions 164 and outer partitions 166.
[0121] Self-Tensioning of Screen:
[0122] In one or more arrangements, track assemblies 20 utilize a novel magnet arrangement in the track assemblies that allow screen receiver 106 to move laterally inward, and thereby allowing an attached screen 14 to expand while under high wind pressure and thereby avoid ripping or other damage, and after the high wind pressure subsides, magnetic attraction pulls the screen receiver 106 outward thereby tensioning the attached screen 14 to provide an aesthetically pleasing, tight screen. Thus, the novel magnet arrangement of the disclosed track assemblies 20 provide a "self-tensioning" system that operates effectively while accounting for fluctuations in weather conditions that ensures increased screen 14 and track assembly 20 lifespan while currently reducing frequent maintenance (and / or replacement) associated with currently marketed screens, track / track assemblies, or a combination thereof.
[0123] In one or more embodiments, track assembly 20 includes a set of magnetic components 170 and 172 (e.g., a pair of magnets having opposite polarity or a magnet paired with a ferrous material or magnetic member) to magnetically couple screen receiver 106 with track 108. For example, in one or more arrangements, a first magnetic component 170 is operably connected to end wall 160 of track 108 and a second magnetic component 172 is operably connected to screen receiver 106. Due to the magnetic coupling, the screen receiver 106 is pulled away from screen into elongate channel 146 to a retracted position, where magnetic components 170 and 172 are in close proximity to one another. In the retracted position, screen receiver tensions screen 14 to provide for an aesthetically pleasing, tight screen 14 in absence of strong forces applied to screen 14. When screen 14 is subjected to high wind pressure or other strong force, magnetic components 170 and 172 may be separated from one another allowing for screen receiver 106 to move inward to an extended position where force applied to screen 14 is relaxed.
[0124] In one or more arrangements, screen receiver 106 is prevented from being pulled out of elongate channel 146 of track 108 by screen 14 by inner partitions 164 and / or retainers 110. After the high wind pressure subsides, the magnetic attraction pulls the separated pair of magnetic components 170 and 172 into close proximity relative to one another while concurrently tensioning screen 14 to provide for an aesthetically pleasing, tight screen 14.
[0125] In one or more arrangements, outer partitions 166 similarly extend inward a distance sufficient to engage screen receiver 106 to limit the distance that screen receiver 106 can move outward away from screen and into elongate channel 146 of track 108. In one or more arrangements, outer partitions 166 are positioned to permit screen receiver 106 move outward to a retracted position, where magnetic components 170 and 172 are in close proximity but prevent magnetic components 170 and 172 from coming into forceful contact with one another.
[0126] Conversely, in one or more arrangements, inner partitions 164 extend inward a distance sufficient to engage screen receiver 106 to limit the distance that screen receiver 106 can move inward toward screen 14 when screen receiver 106 is pulled inward (e.g., due to strong wind). In this example arrangement, channel opening 158 between inner partitions 164 is wide enough to permit screen receiver 106 to be rotated within compartment 162 and removed from elongate channel 146 of track 108 through channel opening 158 at an angle.
[0127] In one or more arrangements, retainers 110 may be attached to track 108 to prevent screen receiver 106 from being removed from elongate channel 146 of track 108 through channel opening 158 even when rotated at an angle. Retainers 110 are formed of any suitable size, shape and design, and are configured to prevent screen receiver 106 from being removed from elongate channel 146. In the arrangement shown, as one example, retainers 110 have an elongated generally rectangular shape and are configured to fit over and connect with inner set of partitions 164 (e.g., by frictional fitting). However, the embodiments are not so limited. Rather, it is contemplated that in some arrangements retainers 110 may be adapted to utilize various other shapes and / or facilitate connection with track 108 using various other mean and / or methods including but not limited to, for example, clamps, snaps, pins, fasteners, adhesive bonding, chemical bonding, welding, stitching, and / or any other connection means or method for connecting.
[0128] Alternatively, it is contemplated that in some arrangements, channel opening 158 between inner partitions is wide enough to permit screen receiver 106 to be removed from elongate channel 146 of track 108 through channel opening 158 without rotating screen receiver 106. In such arrangements, retainers 110 are attached to track 108 to prevent screen receiver 106 from being removed from elongate channel 146 of track 108 through channel opening 158.
[0129] Compressible Members 112:
[0130] In one or more arrangements, track assemblies 20 include one or more compressible members 112 attached to track 108, screen receiver 106, and / or retainers 110 prevent screen receiver 106 from coming into direct forceful contact metal-on-metal contact as screen receiver 106 moves inward and outward within compartment 162 of track 108 during operation. Compressible members 112 are formed of any suitable size, shape, and design and are configured to operably connect with track 108, screen receiver 106, and / or retainers 110 and prevent screen receiver 106 from coming into direct forceful contact with partitions 164 and / or retainers 110 when magnetic components 170 and 172 separate and screen receiver 106 is moved inward toward screen 14 and / or to prevent screen receiver 106 from coming into direct forceful contact with an outward potion of track 108 when magnetic components 170 and 172 are pulled back together and screen receiver 106 is moved outward away from screen, thereby dampening the sound generated by such movement. It is contemplated that some various different arrangements may utilize various materials for compressible members 112 including, but are not limited to various pads, rubbers, plastics, foams, woolpile, brushes, felt or other synthetic or organic textiles, composite materials, nylons, vinyl, ultra-high molecular weight composites or any other suitable material for reducing sound cause by impacts.
[0131] Bottom Bar Assembly 22:
[0132] In the arrangement shown, as one example, system 10 includes a bottom bar assembly 22. Bottom bar assembly 22 is formed of any suitable size, shape, and design and is configured to connect to the bottom edge 52 of screen 14 while providing sufficient weight to the lower end of screen 14 to facilitate smooth opening and closing while also keeping the lower end of screen 14 flat and straight. In the arrangement shown, as one example, bottom bar assembly 22 includes a bottom bar 176, end brackets 178, a sealing member 180, among other components.
[0133] Bottom bar 176 is formed of any suitable size, shape, and design and is configured to connect with, extend across, and provide rigidity to bottom edge 52 of screen 14. In the arrangement shown, as one example, bottom bar 176 has an elongated generally rectangular shape having a top end 182, a bottom end 184, and opposing sides 186 extending between opposing ends 188.
[0134] In one or more arrangements, bottom bar 176 includes one or more hollow interior areas 190 extending between opposing ends 188. The hollow interior areas 190 are configured to receive a weight bar 192 (not shown) (or rod or other shaped material) therein that adds weight to the bottom bar assembly 22.
[0135] In the arrangement shown, the bottom end of bottom bar 176 includes a channel 194 that is configured to receive and hold a sealing member 180 therein that is configured to seal the lower end of bottom bar 176 to the ground when the bottom bar 176 is in a fully lowered or closed position. Sealing member 180 may be formed of any device that facilitates a seal such as a piece of woolpile, a strip of foam, a rubber strip, or any form of a sealing member or other compressible material that helps to facilitate a seal when the bottom bar 176 is in a fully lowered position. In the arrangement shown, as one example, bottom bar 176 has a receiver 196 positioned in top end 182. Receiver 196 is formed of any suitable size, shape, and design and is configured to facilitate connection of the lower end of screen 14 to bottom bar assembly 22. More specifically, in one or more arrangements, receiver 196 is formed of the exact same or a similar shape as c-shaped channel 126 of screen receiver 106, and / or the receiver 84 as is described herein with respect to screen receiver 106 and / or roller tube assembly 16, respectively. In this example arrangement, the lower end of screen 14 includes an interlock 64 that is similar to, if not exactly the same as, the interlocks 60 connected to the side’s edges 54 of screen 14 and interlock 62 connected to top edge 50 of screen 14. In the arrangement shown, interlock 64 is a cylindrical shaped interlock and receiver 196 is a c-shaped channel. However, the arrangements are not so limited. Rather, it is contemplated that in one or more arrangements, interlock 64 may be formed of any form and / or shape of an interlock including, but not limited to a keder interlock, zipper interlock, a rope, a beaded chain, or any similar interlock known in the art associated with the disclosed retractable screens. Moreover, receiver 196 additionally or alternatively connect with screen 14 using various known methods and / or means including but not limited to, for example, clamps, snaps, pins, fasteners, adhesive bonding, chemical bonding, welding, stitching, and / or any other connection means or method for connecting. In the arrangement shown, as one example, only a single receiver 196 is shown in the bottom bar assembly 22. However, any number of receivers 196 are hereby contemplated for use in the bottom bar assembly 22 such as one, two, three, four, five, six or more. Alternatively, it is hereby contemplated that no receivers 196 are used and instead screen 14 is connected to bottom bar assembly 22 by any other manner, method or means.
[0136] In the arrangement shown, a pair of end brackets 178 are connected to the ends 188 of bottom bar 176. End brackets 178 are formed of any suitable, size, shape, and design and are configured to connect with ends 188 of bottom bar 176, connect with interlocks 60 of screen 14, and operably connect bottom bar with tracks 108. In the arrangement shown, as one example, each end bracket 178 has a generally rectangular shaped main body having a bar facing side configured to be inserted into and held within hollow interior 190 of bottom bar 176. In this example arrangement, each end bracket 178 has a track facing side configured to receive and clamp onto (or otherwise connect with) a lower portion of screen interlock 60 of screen 14. In the arrangement shown, the track facing side of end bracket 178 is configured to extend into channel opening 158 of track 108 with close and tight tolerances to facilitate guiding and alignment of bottom bar 176 during opening and closing thereby providing smother, more consistent, and quieter operation. However, embodiments are not so limited. Rather, it is contemplated that end brackets 178 may be implemented with various alternative structures and / or arrangements to facilitate operable connection of bottom bar assembly 22 to track assemblies 20.
[0137] Interlock System 200
[0138] With reference to FIGS. 24-31, an improved interlock system 200 (or simply system 200) for use with retractable screens is presented. In one or more arrangements shown, for example, the interlock system 200, includes an elongated length of seam material 202 that is folded lengthwise around a length of circular cord 204.
[0139] Cord 204:
[0140] Cord 204 is formed of any suitable size, shape, and design and is configured to sufficiently resist cross sectional compression so as to ensure interlock system 200 is not pulled out of a C-shaped channel (e.g., 126 / 84 of track assemblies 20, bottom bar assembly 22, roller tube assembly, and / or other interlock channel), when subjected to large forces (e.g., strong winds). Cord 204 is also configured to exhibit flexibility lengthwise, for example, to facilitate superior performance when raising and / or lowering a retractable screen (e.g., screen 14).
[0141] In one or more arrangements, cord 204 in implemented using high tensile fiber rope, which avoids the problems related to stiffening of cord materials at cold temperatures and provides superior performance in comparison to solid core plastic or rubber cord commonly used in keder interlocks. Some previous attempts to use rope in interlocks were unsuccessful due to compressibility of the rope material, which could allow the interlock to be pulled out from the C- shaped channel of screen receivers 106. Additionally, ropes have a tendency to stretch under weight and do not provide adequate vertical support of retractable screens.
[0142] Without suitable vertical support along the side edges of the screen 14, screen material 56 may stretch unevenly and cause wrinkles or other deformations in the screen.
[0143] Nevertheless, through experimentation and study, it has been surprisingly discovered that rope made with high tensile fibers, such as Dyneema fibers, provide suitable cross-sectional stiffness so as to prevent deformation of an interlock and ensure the interlock remains held in the C-shaped channel. It was also discovered that rope made with Dyneema fibers resisted stretching and provided superior vertical support for retractable screens. Furthermore, and perhaps most importantly, it has been observed that a length of rope made with Dyneema fibers can be easily bent or flexed in cold temperatures and are more durable in cold temperatures.
[0144] While some arrangements of interlock system 200 may be described with reference to cord 204 made with Dyneema fibers, the arrangements are not so limited. Rather, it is contemplated that in some various arrangements, interlock system 200 may utilize a cord 204 made from various high tensile fibers known in the art including but not limited to, for example, Dyneema or other UHMWPE fibers, Kevlar, Aramid, Zylon, Vectron, and / or any other high tensile fibers. In one or more arrangements, cord 204 includes a core 210 formed with one or more high tensile fibers and surrounded by a cover 212.
[0145] Core 210:
[0146] Core 210 of cord 204 is formed of any suitable size, shape, and design, and includes one or more high tensile fibers arranged to form a length of material with high tensile strength. In a preferred embodiment, core 210 includes a unidirectional bundle of Dyneema fibers. However, the arrangements are not so limited. Rather, it is contemplated that on some various arrangements, core may be formed of other high tensile fibers and / or in various arrangements including but not limited to, for example, one or more strands of fibers that are unidirectional, twisted, braided, plaited, or any other method or means for rope or cable construction known in the art.
[0147] Cover 212:
[0148] In some arrangements, as is shown, cord 204 includes a cover 212 surrounding a core 210. Cover 212 is formed of any suitable size, shape, and design and is configured to help maintain arrangement and shape of fibers in core 210, reduce abrasion of fibers in core, and / or provide an exterior surface to facilitate fictional engagement or bonding of cord 204 with seam material 202. In a preferred arrangement, cover 212 is formed of polyester based strands braided around core 210. However, the arrangements are not so limited. Rather, it is contemplated that in some various arrangements, cover 212 may be made one or more various fibers including but not limited to, for example, polyester, Technora, Cordura, Dyneema or other UHMWPE fibers, Kevlar, Aramid, Zylon, Vectron, nylon and / or any other suitable fibers known in the art.
[0149] Seam Material 202
[0150] Seam material 202 (also referred to as keder fabric) is formed of any suitable size, shape, and design and is configured to operably connect with cord 204 and an edge of screen 14 (or other material) to form an interlock thereon. In one or more arrangements, as is shown, seal material 202 is an elongated length of material that is folded lengthwise around cord 204 and attached to itself to form an interlock head 218, configured to be inserted into and held within a C-shaped channel, and seam flaps 220, configured to facilitate connection with an edge of screen 14 or other applicable material to provide an interlock thereon.
[0151] In some various arrangements, seam material 202 may be connected with itself, after being folded around cord 204, using various methods and / or means known in the art. As one example, in one or more arrangements, a strip 222 of the folded seam material 202 extending along cord 204 is connected together by a bond 224 (e.g., thermal welding, adhesive bonding, solvent / chemical bonding, and / or any other means of method for bonding materials). Additionally or alternatively, in one or more arrangements, strip 222 of seam material 202 may be mechanically connected together using, for example, stitching 226, staples, rivets, and / or any other means or methods for connecting known in the art.
