Description

COUPLING BETWEEN A PUMP CAMSHAFT AND A GEAR

[0001] TECHINICAL FIELD

[0002] The present application relates generally to couplings utilized to transfer torque, and more particularly to a coupling to transfer torque between a camshaft and a gear for a low pressure pump system.BACKGROUND

[0003] Engines include a fuel pump system to pump fuel from a low-pressure pump to a high-pressure pump before the fuel enters a common rail and through fuel injectors. The high pressure pump and low pressure pump are driven by a camshaft that directly drives the low-pressure pump. A gear train is operationally assembled with the high pressure pump however the gear train produces torsional vibration which is transferred and applied to the camshaft. The camshaft includes a camshaft end having a coupling attached thereto wherein the coupling receives the torsional vibration and transfers to a gear.

[0044] DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF ILLUSTRATIVE EMBODIMENTS

[0045] For the purposes of promoting an understanding of the principles of the invention, reference will now be made to the embodiments illustrated in the drawings and specific language will be used to describe the same. It will nevertheless be understood that no limitation of the scope of the invention is thereby intended, any alterations and further modifications in the illustrated embodiments, and any further applications of the principles of the invention as illustrated therein as would normally occur to one skilled in the art to which the invention relates are contemplated herein.

[0056] Referring now to FIGS. 13 and 14, the drive end 28 is configured to interface with the inner wall surface 34 of the camshaft opening 42 of the coupling 24. More specifically, the drive end 28 includes the camshaft outer surface 50 that has a mating profile suitable for  assembly with the inner wall surface 34 of the camshaft opening 42. The drive end 28 has a length L wherein a portion of the length L assembles in a mating relationship with the camshaft opening 42 to extend to the lip 80a-80b.

[0057] The camshaft outer surface 50 includes a pair of rounded portions 152a-152b that span between a pair of walls 154a-154b. The pair of rounded portions 152a-152b extends outwardly from the longitudinal axis A1 of the torque delivery system 20. The pair of walls 154a-154b engage the second radius 44a-44d of the inner wall surface 34 of the coupling 20 28 to transmit a torque between the gear 22 and the camshaft 26 through a compressive force on the second radius 44a-44d. During operation of the torque delivery system 20, the drive end 28 rotates about axis Al such that the second radius 44a-44d engages the inner wall surface 34 of the coupling 20 to rotate coupling 20 about axis Al. As the coupling 20 rotates, the first radius 40a-40d contact the internal gear wall 129 of the gear pocket 31 of the gear 22 to transmit a torque between the gear 22 and the camshaft 26 through a compressive force on the first radius 40a-40d.

[0058] Referring now to FIGS. 10-12, the gear 22 comprises teeth 310 arranged in an alternating relationship with grooves 312. Teeth 310 and grooves 312 are configured to mesh with another gear as is known in the art. The gear 22 includes a drive cavity 319 that extends to the gear pocket 31. The drive cavity 319 includes a central opening 330 wherein the drive cavity 319 and the central opening 330 are circular in cross-sectional shape.

[0059] The internal gear wall 129 of the gear pocket 31 is sized and shaped to receive the outer wall surface 32 of the coupling 24 in a mating relationship such that the first radius 40a-40d contacts the internal gear wall 129 of the gear pocket 31 when the coupling 24 is assembled with the gear 22 to transmit torque between the gear 22 and the camshaft 26 through a compressive force on the first radius 40a-40d. As such the internal gear wall 129 of the gear pocket 31 includes a pair of rounded portions 352a-352b that span between a pair of walls 354a-354b. The pair of rounded portions 352a-352b extends outwardly from the longitudinal axis A1 of the torque delivery system 20. The pair of walls 354a-354b engage the first radius 40a-40d of the outer wall surface 32 of the coupling 20 to transmit a torque between the gear 22 and the camshaft 26 through a compressive force on the first radius 40a-40d. The internal gear wall 129 of the gear pocket 31 extends around the outer wall surface 32 of the coupling body 30.

[0060] In the illustrated embodiment, gear 22 is a pinion gear and is configured to mesh with an exterior gear (not illustrated) . Gear 22 is configured to interface with the outer wall  surface 32 of coupling 20. In the illustrated embodiment, gear 22 is composed of metal, but in other embodiments gear 22 may be composed of polymers, polymer coated metal or other suitable materials. In other embodiments teeth 310, grooves 312, drive cavity 319, and / or the central opening 330 may differ in shape or quantity.

[0061] Some of the benefits of the torque delivery system 20 include a stronger and more robust coupling 20. In an operational state of the torque delivery system 20, the pair of bridge portions 52a-52b are not in tension due to the load applied by the rotation of the camshaft 20. Instead, the pair of walls 54a-54b are in compression due to the load applied by the rotation of the camshaft 20 via the first radius 40a-40d and / or the second radius 44a-44d. The first radius 40a-40d is spherical and contacts the internal gear wall 129 of the gear pocket 31 when the coupling 24 is assembled with the gear 22 to transmit torque between the gear 22 and the camshaft 26 through a compressive force on the first radius 40a-40d. The second radius 44a-44d is spherical and contacts the camshaft outer surface 50 of the camshaft drive end 28 to transmit a torque between the gear 22 and the camshaft 26 through a compressive force on the second radius 44a-44d.

[0062] Beneficially, due to the arrangement of the first and second radii 40a-40d and 44a-44d, the pair of bridge portions 52a-52b will not fail as the bridge portions 52a-52b are not in tension. Beneficially, the torque delivery system 20 is a sandwich type of design with direct load being applied at the first and second radii 40a-40d and 44a-44d. A center point of the first radius 40a-40d will touch or contact the internal gear wall 129 of the gear pocket 31 of the gear 22 to transmit a torque between the gear 22 and the camshaft 26 through a compressive force on the first radius 40a-40d. A center point of the second radius 44a-44d will touch or contact the pair of walls 154a-154b of the camshaft drive end 28 to transmit torque between the gear 22 and the camshaft 26 through a compressive force on the second radius 44a-44d. Moreover, the assembly of the gear 22, the coupling 24, and the camshaft drive end 28 are each directly supported by the other. For example, the camshaft drive end 28 is supported by the coupling 24 and the coupling 24 is directly supported by the gear pocket 31 of the gear 22.
