[0003] This section provides background information related to the present disclosure which is not necessarily prior art.
[0004] Pipes that are connected end to end can be connected with metal-to- metal seals. An example is a seal ring having a pair of internal seal lips and a pair of external seal lips that sealing engage a raised rib of opposing pipe couplings.
[0005] During operations, operations sometimes take place using a remotely operated connector in order to safely keep personnel away from the red zones. Connector mating spools are provided on each end and all the sealing surfaces are not accessible by operators due to safety regulations. These mating spools and sealing surfaces are required to be clean and free of debris to ensure proper seal and uniform contact force. The mating spool’s sealing surfaces are exposed and contaminated with highly corrosive and abrasive materials. Debris, grease, sand, salt, metal shavings, etc. coming up from the well (sometime referred to as produced fluid) can be retained on the seat profile. These abrasive materials present on the seats during close and open cycles are damaging the sealing profiles and drastically reducing the utilizable life of the seal.SUMMARY

[0008] A seal assembly includes a pair of pipe couplings that are configured to be secured to a respective pair of pipes, each pipe coupling including a seal seat in the form of an annular bead with tapered inner and outer side walls. An annular metal seal ring includes a pair of inner seal lips configured to engage a respective one of the tapered inner side walls of the annular bead of the pair of pipe couplings and a pair of outer seal lips configured to engage a respective one of the tapered outer side walls of the annular bead of the pair of pipe couplings. The seal scrapers 32, 34 can be made from a variety of elastomeric and polymeric material options including Rubber (HNBR I NBR I XNBR I other TBD; currently 90-durometer), Polyurethane (currently 90-durometer but can include other durometers), and Thermoplastic (including PEEK I PTFE I UHMWPE I other TBD).

The seal assembly according to claim 1 , wherein during assembly, the first scraper edge of the pair of inner scraper rings engage the respective one of the tapered inner side walls of the annular bead of the pair of pipe couplings and the second scraper edge of the pair of outer scraper rings engage the respective one of the tapered outer side walls of the annular bead of the pair of pipe couplings.
3. The seal assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the pair of inner scraper rings and the pair of outer scraper rings are made from one of rubber, plastic and polyurethane.
4. The seal assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the pair of inner scraper rings and the pair of outer scraper rings are snap-fit on to the annular metal seal ring.
5. The seal assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the annular metal seal ring includes a pair of inner annular grooves formed on an inner surface of the pair of inner seal lips, and the pair of inner scraper rings include an annular rib snap-fit into a respective one of the pair of inner annular grooves.Atty. The seal assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the annular metal seal ring includes a pair of outer annular grooves formed on an outer surface of the pair of outer seal lips, and the pair of outer scraper rings include an annular rib snap-fit into a respective one of the pair of outer annular grooves.
7. The seal assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the pair of inner seal lips include a tapered outer surface.
8. The seal assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the pair of outer seal lips include a tapered inner surface.
9. The seal assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the pair of inner scraper rings are formed as a single piece.
10. The seal assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the pair of outer scraper rings are formed as a single piece.
11. A seal assembly comprising: a pair of pipe couplings configured to be secured to a respective pair of pipes, each pipe coupling including an annular seal surface; an annular metal seal ring including a pair of seal lips configured to engage a respective one of the annular seal surfaces of the pair of pipe couplings; a pair of scraper rings secured to the pair of seal lips and including a scraper edge that extends radially beyond a distal end of the seal lips.
12. The seal assembly according to claim 11 , wherein during assembly, the scraper edge of the pair of inner scraper rings engage the respective one of the annular seal surface of the pair of pipe couplings.
13. The seal assembly according to claim 11 , wherein the pair of scraper rings are made from one of rubber, plastic and polyurethane.
14. The seal assembly according to claim 11 , wherein the pair of scraper rings are snap-fit on to the annular metal seal ring.Atty. Ref. FFL-24-0002WO-84700308PQA15. 17. The seal assembly according to claim 11 , wherein the pair of scraper rings are formed as a single piece.
18. A scraper seal ring comprising: an annular metal body including at least a pair of seal lips; a pair of scraper rings secured to the pair of seal lips and including a scraper edge that extends radially beyond a distal end of the seal lips.
19. The scraper seal ring according to claim 18, wherein the pair of scraper rings are made from one of rubber, plastic and polyurethane.
20. The scraper seal ring according to claim 18, wherein the pair of scraper rings are snap-fit on to the annular metal body.
