Abstract

Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to determination of a random access (RA) radio network temporary identifier (RA-RNTI). In an aspect, a terminal device determines that a first set of random access channel (RACH) occasions (ROs) overlaps with a second set of ROs in time domain. The first set of ROs is configured by a first RACH configuration and the second set of ROs is configured by a second RACH configuration. The terminal device determines a RA-RNTI for a RO among the first set of ROs based on one of the following: (i) a first rule, (ii) a second rule and (iii) a third rule.

[0045] The terminal device 110 may perform 2-step RACH or 4-step RACH to the network device 120. In the communication network 100, there may be different operations. For example, traditional Time-division Duplex (TDD) , Frequency-division Duplex (FDD) , and SBFD operation (also may be referred as FDU operation) .

[0046] FIG. 1B illustrates an example of different duplexing schemes. In FIG. 1B, it shows the TDD operation, FDD operation and SBFD operation (also may be referred as FDU operation) .

[0047] SBFD is being specified in Rel-19 as a new mode of operation in unpaired spectrum where a separate set of RBs within a TDD carrier are used for UL and DL transmission simultaneously. The intention is to allow more UL transmission opportunities compared to the typical DL-heavy TDD configurations used in today’s TDD deployments. This bring benefits in terms of UL coverage and UL latency, especially in wide-area macro networks where many UEs are in power-limited conditions in the UL direction.

[0048] In SBFD operation, simultaneous transmission and reception (on a non-overlapping set of RBs) is assumed at the gNB side, while half-duplex operation is assumed at the UE side.

[0049] FIG. 1C illustrates an example of 4-step RACH procedure. For the purpose of discussion, the process 100C will be described with reference to FIG. 1A. The process may involve the terminal device 110, the network device 120 as illustrated in FIG. 1A.

[0050] In this disclosure, we focus on the 4-step RACH for illustration purposes and simplicity, but the proposed concept is equally applicable to the 2-step RACH.

[0051] As shown in the FIG. 1C, the 4-step RACH procedure can be summarized as follows:

[0052] Msg1 (e.g. PRACH) : The terminal device 110 sends a specific preamble to the network device 120 via the physical random access channel (PRACH) using a specific resource called RACH occasion (RO) . While sending the PRACH, terminal device 110 calculates the RA-RNTI as well. More details on RA-RNTI will be discussed later.

[0053] Msg2 (e.g. RAR) : The gNB replies with a random-access response (RAR) message, which includes the detected preamble ID, the time-advance command, a TC-RNTI, and UL grant for the transmission of Msg3 on PUSCH.

[0054] Msg3 (e.g. RRC request) : The terminal device 110 responds to Msg2 over the scheduled PUSCH with an ID for contention resolution.

[0055] Msg4 (e.g. RRC setup) : The network device 120 transmits the contention resolution message with the contention-resolution ID.

[0056] A RACH Occasion (ROs) is the specific time-frequency resource made available for UEs to transmit their Random Access Preamble on the Random Access Channel. These occasions are defined by the network and broadcast to the UEs so they know when and where to attempt their random access.

[0057] It is to be noted that an RO is determined as valid, if it is within UL symbols or if it has a sufficient gap after the last SSB / DL symbol in case it is within flexible symbols. Also the valid ROs allocated to the non-SBFD UEs are referred as the legacy ROs, and the valid ROs allocated to the SBFD UE are referred as the SBFD ROs. Please note, different from non-SBFD UEs, for a SBFD UE, ROs in UL sub band (in DL sot) could also be a valid RO.

[0058] For RA aspects on SBFD, it had been agreed to support Option 1 with Alt 1-1 and Option 2 for the configuration of RA resource in SBFD symbol.

[0059] In the option 2, it defines additional RACH configurations within the UL subband in SBFD symbol, which is other than the legacy RACH configuration. For Option 2, it is supported in order to configure separated RA parameters (e.g., prach-ConfigurationIndex, number of SSBs per RO, RACH partition configuration, etc. ) between SBFD ROs and legacy ROs.

[0060] For the additional RACH configuration in option 2, designed for SBFD-aware UEs, a challenge is avoiding RA-RNTI confusion caused by having two sets of RACH resources. The RA-RNTI is used by a UE to receive the Random Access Response (RAR) once the PRACH is transmitted. Different RACH occasions within a system frame are assigned unique RA-RNTI values to ensure that the RAR for a given PRACH transmission is directed only to the UE that used that specific RACH occasion. If two RACH occasions share the same RA-RNTI value, there is a risk that two UEs using different RACH occasions could incorrectly act on the same RAR message.

[0061] More specifically, the UE calculates the RA-RANTI when sending the Msg 1 of the RA procedure. According to TS38.321, the RA-RNTI is computed as: RA-RNTI = 1 + s_id + 14 × t_id + 14 × 80 × f_id + 14 × 80 × 8 × ul_carrier_id

[0062] Where,

[0063] s_id is the index of the first OFDM symbol of the PRACH occasion (0 ≤ s_id < 14)

[0064] t_id is the index of the first slot of the PRACH occasion in a system frame (0 ≤ t_id <80)

[0065] f_id is the index of the PRACH occasion in the frequency domain (0 ≤ f_id < 8)

[0066] ul_carrier_id is the UL carrier used for Random Access Preamble transmission (0 for NUL carrier, and 1 for SUL carrier)

[0067] For PRACH configuration Option 2 (i.e., an SBFD-aware UE is configured with a legacy and additional PRACH configurations) , there is a possibility that the SBFD ROs configured by the additional configurations may overlapped with the legacy ROs. This could happen in flexible symbols (as both legacy and SBFD ROs can be configured in flexible symbols) . When this overlapping happens, there is a non-negligible possibility that at least s_id and t_id of the overlapping legacy RO and SBFD RO are the same (and of course the ul-carrier_id is the same since we are talking about a same carrier)

[0068] It is noticed that in existing specs, f_id may lead some problems. If the legacy specs  is kept as is, then at the point when there is such overlapping, there is a mismatch between the frequency indices being used by legacy UEs and the one being used by SBFD UEs.

[0069] FIG. 1D illustrates an example of SBFD and legacy RO (also referred to as normal RO as used herein) overlapping in time domain. In the FIG. 1D, SBFD f_id is the frequency index of any RO seen by SBFD-aware UE (not the f_id of the SBFD ROs only) . Legacy f_id: is the frequency index seen by legacy UE.

[0070] Therefore, although there is no issue at the non-overlapping time instance, there exist the possibility that two independent legacy RO and SBFD RO may end up having the same f_id. This leads to the same RA-RNTI and making confusion for these UE when receiving the same RA-RNTI.

[0071] It had been proposed that:

[0072] RA-RNTI = 1 + s_id + 14 × t_id + 14 × 80 × f_id + 14 × 80 × 8 × ul_carrier_id + 14 × 80 ×8 × 2 × RACH_config

[0073] In this formula for RA-RNTI, the RACH_config is the index of the PRACH configurations (e.g., 1 for legacy PRACH configuration and 2 for additional PRACH configuration) , aiming at a further separation of RA-RNTI for the two RO types. Although the solution in this solution would work, it however can be seen as an overkill, which lead to significant specs impacts and implementation complexity since the formula is modified.

[0074] Therefore, some embodiments of this disclosure propose the legacy RA-RNTI formula is kept as is and a rule is added for the indexing of f_id when there is overlapping. It may overcome the problem which is caused from the f_id.

[0075] FIG. 2 illustrates a flowchart illustrating an example of process for measurement reporting according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the process 200 will be described with reference to FIG. 1. The process 200 may involve the terminal device 110, the network device 120 as illustrated in FIG. 1.

[0076] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine 210 that a first set of RACH ROs overlaps with a second set of ROs in time domain. In some embodiments, the first set of ROs is configured by a first RACH configuration and the second set of ROs is configured by a second RACH configuration.

[0077] The terminal device 110 may determine 220 a random access (RA) radio network temporary identifier (RA-RNTI) for a RO among the first set of ROs based on one of a first  rule, a second rule, or a third rule. In some other embodiments, the terminal device 110 can determine 220 the RA-RNTI for the RO based on any combination of these rules. In particular, the first rule may specify determining frequency indices of the second set of ROs by ignoring the first set of ROs, and determining frequency indices of the first set of ROs by starting from an index used for a last RO among the second set of ROs plus one. The second rule may specify determining a first range of frequency indices for the first set of ROs and a second range of frequency indices for the second set of ROs. The third rule may specify determining a first symbol index of a starting orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) symbol for the first set of ROs and a second symbol index of the same starting OFDM symbol for the second set of ROs.

[0078] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 is a SBFD aware device, the first set of ROs comprises SBFD ROs, the second set of ROs comprises non-SBFD ROs, the first RACH configuration is suitable for an SBFD aware device and not suitable for a non-SBFD aware device, and the second RACH configuration is suitable for both an SBFD aware device and a non-SBFD aware device.

[0079] The network device 120 may also transmit 205 the first RACH configuration and the second RACH configuration to the terminal device 110. In some example embodiments, the first RACH configuration and the second RACH configuration may be the legacy RACH configuration and the additional RACH configuration, respectively.

[0080] In some embodiments, the first rule may define the following. Firstly, determining the frequency index of the legacy ROs (also referred as non-SBFD ROs) by ignoring the SBFD ROs (i.e., aiming at keeping the same legacy index for the legacy ROs) . Secondly, determining the frequency index of SBFD ROs by continuing the indexing starting from the index used for the last legacy RO plus one (and ignoring the legacy ROs) .

[0081] FIG. 3 illustrates a schematic diagram illustrating the proposed solution for avoiding the RA-RNTI collision in a time overlapped SBFD RO and legacy RO scenario according to some embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0082] In FIG. 3, the proposed solution as shown corresponds to the first rule for different scenarios of configuring SBFD ROs. It may be seen that two independent legacy (non SBFD) ROs and SBFD ROs may end up having the same f_id. In this way, the possible RA-RNTI collision can be avoided.

[0083] FIG. 4 illustrates a flowchart illustrating an example of process for determination of  RA-RNTI according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the process 400 will be described with reference to FIG. 1. The process 400 may involve the terminal device 110, the network device 120 as illustrated in FIG. 1.

[0084] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may be the SBFD UE supporting option 2, and the network device 120 may be the SBFD gNB.

[0085] At 401, the terminal device 110 may receive the legacy and additional RACH configurations from the network device 120. For example, the terminal device 110 may receive cell-specific SBFD time / frequency configuration in SIB1. The SIB1 also contains the additional and legacy RACH configuration.

[0086] At 402, the terminal device 110 may validate the ROs.

[0087] At 403, the terminal device 110 may determine whether there are flexible slots in the TDD pattern.

[0088] At 404-405, if there are flexible slots in the TDD pattern, the terminal device 110 may calculate the valid ROs for SBFD and legacy RO operation and determines whether there is time domain overlap between the legacy and SBFD ROs.

[0089] At 406, if there is a time-domain overlap, the terminal device 110 may apply the first rule to calculate the RA-RNTI for the SBFD UEs.

[0090] As for optional rule at 407, the first rule further specifies that a total number of frequency indices for the first set of ROs and the second set of ROs is not greater than a number N. For example, terminal device 110 doesn’ t expect to be configured with the total number of frequency indices for the ROs in the legacy and additional PRACH configurations to be greater than N, if there is an overlapping between the legacy and SBFD ROs. N can be reported as a UE capability or hardcoded in specs. When there is no report of such capability then N = 8 (as per legacy maximum frequency index for one PRACH configuration) .

[0091] In some embodiments, If N>8, then the formula is modified as follow, the text in bold and underlined specifically shows the changes: RA-RNTI = 1 + s_id + 14 × t_id + 14 × 80 × f_id + 14 × 80 × N × ul_carrier_id.

[0092] At the last, the terminal device 110 may follow the legacy RA procedure (RA step 2) .

[0093] FIG. 5 illustrates a flowchart illustrating an example of process for determination of RA-RNTI according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of  discussion, the process 500 will be described with reference to FIG. 1. The process 500 may involve the terminal device 110, the network device 120 as illustrated in FIG. 1.

[0094] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may be the SBFD UE supporting option 2, and the network device 120 may be the SBFD gNB.

[0095] At 501, the terminal device 110 may receive the legacy and additional RACH configurations from the network device 120. For example, the terminal device 110 may receive cell-specific SBFD time / frequency configuration in SIB1. The SIB1 also contains the additional and legacy RACH configuration.

[0096] At 502, the terminal device 110 may validate the ROs.

[0097] At 503, the terminal device 110 may determine whether there are flexible slots in the TDD pattern.

[0098] At 504-505, if there are flexible slots in the TDD pattern, the terminal device 110 may calculate the valid ROs for SBFD and legacy RO operation and determines whether there is time domain overlap between the legacy and SBFD ROs.

[0099] At 506, if there is a time-domain overlap, the terminal device 110 may apply the first rule to determine f_id and modified equation (based on the second rule) to calculate the RA-RNTI for the SBFD UEs.

[0100] In some embodiments, the second rule further specifies that a maximum range of the frequency indices is from 0 to 15, the first range of frequency indices for the first set of ROs is from 8 to 15, and the second range of frequency indices for the second set of ROs is from 0 to 7.

[0101] Specifically, the f_id limits are increased to cover a maximum number of legacy ROs frequency indices of 8 alongside a maximum number of SBFD ROs indices of 8 simultaneously. The new f_id limits will be: 0 ≤ f_id < 16. In this embodiment, the SBFD ROs can take only frequency indices between 8 and 16 (excluded) , and the legacy ROs will follow the legacy rule and take only frequency indices between 0 and 8 (excluded) .

[0102] Based on this embodiment, the formula is modified as following, in which the text in bold and underlined specifically shows the changes: RA-RNTI = 1 + s_id + 14 × t_id + 14 × 80 × f_id + 14 × 80 × 16 × ul_carrier_id.

[0103] Where, f_id is the index of the PRACH occasion in the frequency domain (0 ≤ f_id < 16)

[0104] It is to be noticed that an additional 8 frequency indices since it is possible to have a maximum number of legacy ROs (8) with msg1-FDM =8 and a maximum number of SBFD ROs of (8) with the additional RACH configuration parameter msg1-FDM = 8.

[0105] At the last, the terminal device 110 may follow the legacy RA procedure (RA step 2) .

[0106] In this way, the example embodiments of this disclosure solve the problem of having two ROs with the same RA-RNTI. Also there is no need for any exchange between the UE and the NW regarding the maximum number of possible overlapping ROs simultaneous.

[0107] FIG. 6 illustrates a flowchart illustrating an example of process for determination of RA-RNTI according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the process 600 will be described with reference to FIG. 1. The process 600 may involve the terminal device 110, the network device 120 as illustrated in FIG. 1.

[0108] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may be the SBFD UE supporting option 2, and the network device 120 may be the SBFD gNB.

[0109] At 601, the terminal device 110 may receive the legacy and additional RACH configurations from the network device 120. For example, the terminal device 110 may receive cell-specific SBFD time / frequency configuration in SIB1. The SIB1 also contains the additional and legacy RACH configuration.

[0110] At 602, the terminal device 110 may validate the ROs.

[0111] At 603, the terminal device 110 may determine whether there are flexible slots in the TDD pattern.

[0112] At 604-605, if there are flexible slots in the TDD pattern, the terminal device 110 may calculate the valid ROs for SBFD and legacy RO operation and determines whether there is time domain overlap between the legacy and SBFD ROs.

[0113] At 606, if there is a time-domain overlap, the terminal device 110 may apply the third rule to determine f_id and calculate the RA-RNTI for the SBFD UEs.

[0114] In the third rule, the formula to determine the RA-RNTI may not need to update. The terminal device 110 need to use a different s_id for additional ROs, if the additional RO have same starting symbol with legacy RO. For example, that could use s_id+ an integer instead of s_id. In some embodiments, the integer may be 1. If SBFD RO have different starting symbol with legacy RO, then the s_id need not happen change.

[0115] Specifically, the formula may be defined as follow: RA-RNTI = 1 + s_id + 14 × t_id + 14 × 80 × f_id + 14 × 80 × 8 × ul_carrier_id.

[0116] where, s_id is the index of the first OFDM symbol of the PRACH occasion (0 ≤ s_id <14) and s_id range is 0-13,

[0117] It is to be noticed that s_id range is 0-13, the s_id can be used max value is 12 in spec 38.211 table 6.3.3.2, then using s_id+1 will not exceed the spec range. So, the change will not impact the current formula. Also, the minimum interval for multiple ROs is 2 symbols, and since the minimum PRACH duration requires 2 symbols. The minimum interval for S_ID is 2 symbols in one PCI, therefore, using s_id+1 will not conflict with the current spec.

[0118] In some embodiments, it can also be extended to use other values (integer) that only need to be in range and can be distinguished from S_id values

[0119] In some examples, If the SBFD additional RO have same s_id with legacy RO, that’s mean they have same starting symbol for RO, e.g. s_id=2, then the SBFD aware UE will use s_id+1 to instead of s_id (old) . So SBFD RO is 3 and legacy RO is 2.

[0120] At the last, the terminal device 110 may follow the legacy RA procedure (RA step 2) .

[0121] In this way, the example embodiments of the present disclosure reduce RA-RNTI collisions without modifying existing formula.

[0122] FIG. 7 shows a flowchart of an example method 700 implemented at a terminal device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 700 will be described from the perspective of the terminal device 110 with reference to FIG. 1.

[0123] At block 710, the terminal device 110 may determine that a first set of random access channel (RACH) occasions (ROs) overlaps with a second set of ROs in time domain, wherein the first set of ROs is configured by a first RACH configuration and the second set of ROs is configured by a second RACH configuration. At block 720, the terminal device 110 may further determine a random access (RA) radio network temporary identifier (RA-RNTI) for a RO among the first set of ROs based on one of the following: (i) a first rule for determining frequency indices of the second set of ROs by ignoring the first set of ROs, and determining frequency indices of the first set of ROs by starting from an index used for a last RO among  the second set of ROs plus one; (ii) a second rule for determining a first range of frequency indices for the first set of ROs and a second range of frequency indices for the second set of ROs; or (iii) a third rule for determining a first symbol index of a starting OFDM symbol for the first set of ROs and a second symbol index of the same starting OFDM symbol for the second set of ROs

[0124] In some embodiments, the first rule further specifies that a total number of frequency indices for the first set of ROs and the second set of ROs is not greater than a number N.

[0125] In some embodiments, the number N is reported by the terminal device as capability information of the terminal device. In some embodiments, the number N is equal to 8 in the case that the terminal device does not report the number N. In some embodiments, the number N is predefined. In some embodiments, in the case that the number N is greater than 8, a formula for calculating the RA-RNTI includes a term which includes the number N as a multiplier.

[0126] In some embodiments, the second rule further specifies that a maximum range of the frequency indices is from 0 to 15, the first range of frequency indices for the first set of ROs is from 8 to 15, and the second range of frequency indices for the second set of ROs is from 0 to 7.

[0127] In some embodiments, a formula for calculating the RA-RNTI includes a term which includes 16 as a multiplier.

[0128] In some embodiments, the third rule further specifies that the second symbol index is equal to the first symbol index plus a predetermined number.

[0129] In some embodiments, the predetermined number is one.

[0130] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may further determine whether there is a flexible slot in a time division duplex (TDD) pattern, and based on determining that there is a flexible slot in a TDD pattern, determining whether the first set of ROs overlaps the second set of ROs.

[0131] In some embodiments, the terminal device is a sub band full duplex (SBFD) aware device. In some embodiments, the first set of ROs comprises SBFD ROs. In some embodiments, the second set of ROs comprises non-SBFD ROs. In some embodiments, the first RACH configuration is suitable for an SBFD aware device and not suitable for a non-SBFD aware device. In some embodiments, the second RACH configuration is suitable for  both an SBFD aware device and a non-SBFD aware device.

[0132] In some embodiments, an apparatus capable of performing any of the method 700 (for example, the terminal device 110) may comprise means for performing the respective steps of the method 700. The means may be implemented in any suitable form. For example, the means may be implemented in a circuitry or software module.

[0133] In some embodiments, the apparatus comprises means for determining that a first set of random access channel (RACH) occasions (ROs) overlaps with a second set of ROs in time domain, wherein the first set of ROs is configured by a first RACH configuration and the second set of ROs is configured by a second RACH configuration. The apparatus comprises means for determining a random access (RA) radio network temporary identifier (RA-RNTI) for a RO among the first set of ROs based on one of the following: (i) a first rule for determining frequency indices of the second set of ROs by ignoring the first set of ROs, and determining frequency indices of the first set of ROs by starting from an index used for a last RO among the second set of ROs plus one; (ii) a second rule for determining a first range of frequency indices for the first set of ROs and a second range of frequency indices for the second set of ROs; or (iii) a third rule for determining a first symbol index of a starting OFDM symbol for the first set of ROs and a second symbol index of the same starting OFDM symbol for the second set of ROs.

[0134] In some embodiments, the first rule further specifies that a total number of frequency indices for the first set of ROs and the second set of ROs is not greater than a number N.

[0135] In some embodiments, the number N is reported by the terminal device as capability information of the terminal device.

[0136] In some embodiments, the second rule further specifies that a maximum range of the frequency indices is from 0 to 15, the first range of frequency indices for the first set of ROs is from 8 to 15, and the second range of frequency indices for the second set of ROs is from 0 to 7.

[0137] In some embodiments, a formula for calculating the RA-RNTI includes a term which includes 16 as a multiplier.

[0138] In some embodiments, the third rule further specifies that the second symbol index is equal to the first symbol index plus a predetermined number.

[0139] In some embodiments, the predetermined number is one.

[0140] In some embodiments, the apparatus further comprises means for at least one of the following: determining whether there is a flexible slot in a time division duplex (TDD) pattern, and based on determining that there is a flexible slot in a TDD pattern, determining whether the first set of ROs overlaps the second set of ROs.

[0141] In some embodiments, the terminal device is a sub band full duplex (SBFD) aware device.

[0142] In some embodiments, the apparatus further comprises means for performing other steps in some embodiments of the method 700. In some embodiments, the means comprises at least one processor and at least one memory including computer program code, the at least one memory and computer program code configured to, with the at least one processor, cause the performance of the apparatus.
