WATERBORNE UV CURABLE COATING COMPOSITIONINVENTION FIELD

[0001] The present disclosure relates to the field of coatings, and more particularly to waterborne UV curable coatings, especially waterborne UV curable coatings suitable for substrates of consumer electronic products.BACKGROUND

[0002] Consumer electronic products, such as mobile phones, headphones, and computers, are becoming increasingly indispensable in daily work and life. In order to achieve aesthetics and durability, it is desirable to coat, decorate, and protect the surface of the products. Recently, all the coatings have been developing towards waterborne and low-VOC coatings. However, existing waterborne UV coatings on the market have problems such as poor stain resistance, poor wear resistance, and poor adhesion to PC (polycarbonate) substrates.

[0003] Therefore, it is desirable to develop a waterborne UV curable coating product that meets the requirements of low VOC emissions while possessing various mechanical and appearance properties suitable for the application field of consumer electronic products.SUMMARY

[0004] The present inventors have conducted extensive research and developed a waterborne UV curable coating composition that has low VOC emissions and excellent substrate adhesion, stain resistance, wear resistance, chemical resistance, boiling stability, etc.

[0005] The present invention provides a waterborne UV curable coating composition comprising a first polyurethane acrylate resin and a second polyurethane acrylate resin, wherein the first polyurethane acrylate resin has a functionality of 6 or higher, the second polyurethane acrylate resin has a functionality of 4 or lower, and the first polyurethane acrylate resin comprises a moiety derived from a polycarbonate diol.

[0006] The present invention further provides a coated substrate, comprising a substrate and the waterborne UV curable coating composition applied onto at least a part of the substrate.

[0007] The features and advantages of the present invention will be particularly presented in detail in the following description of the embodiments.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS

[0008] FIG. 1 shows the results of mark pen wiping tests of the coatings formed from the coating composition (a) of the present invention and the coating composition (b) of the comparative example.DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0009] As used herein, unless expressly stated otherwise, expressions such as values, ranges, amounts, or percentages used in the specification and claims shall be deemed to be modified in all instances by the term "about, " even if such term is not expressly stated. Therefore, unless stated to the contrary, the numerical parameters set forth in the specification and claims herein are approximations and can vary depending on the desired properties of the invention.

[0010] Notwithstanding that the numerical ranges and parameters setting forth the broad scope of the invention are approximations, the numerical values set forth in the specific examples are reported as accurately as possible. However, any numerical value inherently has certain errors. This error is a necessary consequence of the standard deviation derived from its corresponding measurement method.

[0011] Furthermore, it should be understood that any numerical range stated herein is intended to comprise all subranges subsumed therein. For example, a range of “1 to 10” is intended to comprise all subranges between (and including) the stated minimum value of 1 and the stated maximum value of 10, that is, having a minimum value equal to or greater than 1 and a maximum value equal to or less than 10.

[0012] In this application, use of a singular comprises the plural and use of a plural comprises the singular unless expressly stated otherwise. Furthermore, in this application, unless otherwise expressly stated, the use of “or” means “and / or” even though "and / or” can be explicitly used in some cases. Furthermore, in this application, the use of “a” or “an” means “at least one” , unless expressly stated otherwise. For example, “a" polymer, “a" coating, etc. refers to any one or more of these substances. Also, as one skilled in the art will recognize, features of one embodiment can be used with other embodiments even if not explicitly stated.

[0013] As used herein, the “coating” refers to a substance in a fluid state that is coated on the surface of a substrate and can be cured to form a coating film through natural or artificial methods, covering the surface of the substrate and having the functions of protection and / or decoration.

[0014] As used herein, “waterborne” means that the solvent of the coating composition contains at least 50 wt%of water based on the total weight of the solvent.

[0015] As used herein, the “UV curable / curing” , also known as “ultraviolet (light / ray) curable / curing” , means that a reaction is initiated in a coating composition under the UV (ultraviolet light / ray) radiation so that a coating film is formed. As used herein, the “cure / curing / cured” refers to the process by which a material becomes fixed and no longer flows.

[0016] The waterborne UV curable coating composition according to the present invention can have a low VOC content. As used herein, the term "VOC (volatile organic compound) " refers to any organic compound having a boiling point lower than or equal to 250℃ (482°F) as measured at a standard atmospheric pressure of 101.3 kPa. Organic solvents are often the main source of VOCs. The VOC content (as determined free of water) of the waterborne UV curable coating composition according to the present invention can be at most about 200 g / L. The VOC value can be obtained by measuring the contents of various organic components in the formulation using gas chromatography, and summing up the contents of various components.

[0017] The waterborne UV curable coating composition according to the present invention can be a one-component composition. Herein, the “one-component (1K) ” means that all resins, pigments / fillers, solvents, and / or adjuvants of the coating composition are packaged in a single container. Thus, a one-component composition offers advantages such as ease of storage and use.

[0018] The waterborne UV curable coating composition according to the present invention can be used as a topcoat. The topcoat can be directly applied onto a substrate that has not been precoated with another coating layer. Alternatively, the topcoat can be used in conjunction with other coating composition (s) in a multi-layer coating system, e.g., applied onto a substrate that has been precoated with a primer and / or basecoat.

[0019] The waterborne UV curable coating composition according to the present invention can have a solids content of 30 to 50 wt%based on the total weight of the coating composition. As used herein, the “solid content” refers to the weight of the coating composition after volatilization of solvent as a percentage of the total weight of the coating composition.

[0073] The coating layer was left to stand at 65℃ and 90%RH for 504 hours, and then tested for ΔE94 value. Test requirement: ΔE94 is no more than 3.0. 5 -Pencil hardness test

[0074] This test was performed with a Mitsubishi pencil, which moved 1 cm *5 times under a load of 9.8N.

[0075] Test requirements: After the pencil marks are removed from the surface with an eraser, the coating layer is observed with the naked eye, wherein the coating layer should not peel off, crack, scratch, etc., and the hardness is >= F.
