AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing grippers lack operational flexibility to adapt to parts and components of varying shapes and sizes, leading to unreliable gripping actions, especially in environments where parts widely vary in shape and size, such as in motor vehicle assembly lines.

Method used

A gripper device with modular gripping arms and asymmetrical flexural deformation mechanism, featuring a pantograph mechanism and asymmetrical flexural behavior of the gripping fingers, allowing adaptation to diverse shapes and sizes while maintaining a secure grip.

Benefits of technology

The gripper device ensures stable gripping even under perturbations, adapting to varying shapes and sizes without complex structures, preventing accidental release of components.

Abstract

There is described a gripper device (1) – and a corresponding gripping finger (7) – which may be used e.g. on a robot for handling parts or components (P) of varying shapes and sizes. Thanks to the gripping finger (7) described herein it is therefore possible to provide a gripper device with a wide adaptability to parts and components (P) to be gripped having shapes and sizes even very different from one another, while always maintaining the gripping action even upon the occurrence of actions which tend to tear the component away from the grip of the gripper device.
