Abstract
Description
[0001] priority
[0002] This application claims priority to and the benefit of U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 63 / 375,566, filed on September 14, 2022, the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference. Technical Field
[0003] The present disclosure relates to a system and method for wrapping a load with a paper wrapping material, and more particularly to a system and method for forming a sleeve of paper wrapping material around a load. Background Art
[0004] Packaging lines include one or more of several different types of grouping systems that group cargo loads by securing the cargo together and, in some applications, to pallets. These grouping systems include stretch wrapping machines that group cargo loads using rolls of plastic stretch film. Typical stretch wrapping machines include a film carrier on which replaceable rolls of stretch film are mounted. To wrap the cargo load, the film carrier rotates relative to the load, or the load rotates relative to the film carrier (depending on the type of stretch wrapping machine), while the film carrier moves vertically relative to the load. This relative motion pulls the stretch film from the roll and applies the stretch film to the load in a spiral pattern.
[0005] While stretch wrapping machines have proven to be a stalwart in the industry, there is a desire to reduce the use of plastic stretch film where appropriate without negatively impacting the formation of loads. Paper wrapping material is a recyclable, eco-friendly alternative to plastic stretch film. There is a continuing need for new systems for wrapping cargo loads with paper wrapping material. Summary of the invention
[0006] Various embodiments of the present disclosure provide a system and method for forming a sleeve of paper wrapping material around a load of cargo.
[0007] A method for forming a paper wrapping material sleeve around a load includes: applying paper wrapping material to a front surface of the load by engaging the front surface of the load with the paper wrapping material, the paper wrapping material extending from a roll of paper wrapping material to a first roller on one side of the load and from the first roller to a second roller on an opposite side of the load; applying the paper wrapping material to opposite first and second side surfaces of the load, wherein applying the paper wrapping material to the second side surface includes unwinding a portion of the length of the paper wrapping material wrapped around the second roller; and applying the paper wrapping material to a rear surface of the load to form the paper wrapping material sleeve. [0021] The controller 900 includes a processing device communicatively connected to a memory device. The processing device may include any suitable processing device, such as, but not limited to, a general purpose processor, a special purpose processor, a digital signal processor, one or more microprocessors, one or more microprocessors associated with a digital signal processor core, one or more application specific integrated circuits, one or more field programmable gate array circuits, one or more integrated circuits, and / or a state machine. The memory device may include any suitable memory device, such as, but not limited to, a read-only memory, a random access memory, one or more digital registers, a cache memory, one or more semiconductor memory devices, magnetic media such as an integrated hard disk and / or a removable memory, magneto-optical media, and / or optical media. The memory device stores instructions that can be executed by the processing device to control the operation of the wrapping system 10 (such as performing the wrapping process described below).
[0022] The controller 900 is communicatively and operably connected to the conveyor actuator 55a, the roll actuator 210a, the first roller assembly actuator 300a, the first drive roller actuator 310a, the second roller assembly actuator 400a, the second drive roller actuator 410a, the clamp actuator 510a, the adhesive applicator actuator 610a, the cutter actuator 710a and the sensor S to control the operation of these components and receive signals from these components to perform the wrapping process described below.
[0023] The following references Figures 1A to 1JThe wrapping system 10 is described as performing a wrapping process to form a wrap 1000s of paper wrapping material WM around a cargo load 1000. The cargo load 1000 has a length L, a width W, a front surface 1000a, a rear surface 1000b opposite the front surface 1000a, a first side surface 1000c, and a second side surface 1000d opposite the first side surface 1000c. Figure 1A As shown, at the beginning of the wrapping process, the first drive roller 310 and the first idler roller 320 are in an original position in which they are located between the roll R and the load 1000. Similarly, at the beginning of the wrapping process, the second drive roller 410 and the second idler roller 420 are in an original position on the opposite side of the load 1000 from the first drive roller and the first idler roller, and in this position, the second drive roller and the second idler roller are spaced apart from the load 1000 in the transverse direction TD. The paper wrapping material WM extends from the roll R through the roller gap between the first drive roller 310 and the first idler roller 320, across the conveyor 55 and in front of the front surface 1000a of the load 1000, between the roller gap between the second drive roller 410 and the second idler roller 420, and around the second drive roller 410. The length of the paper wrapping material WM wrapped around the second drive roller 410 is substantially equal to the sum of half the width W of the load 1000 and the length L, but it can be any suitable amount.
[0024] The controller 900 controls the conveyor actuator 55a to drive the conveyor 55 so that the load 1000 moves relative to the wrapping machine 100 and the paper wrapping material WM in the moving direction MD. The front surface 1000a of the load 1000 eventually contacts the paper wrapping material WM suspended across the conveyor 55. The continued movement of the load 1000 causes the load to pull the paper wrapping material off the roll R and off the second drive roller 410, and the paper wrapping material extends along the first side surface 1000c and the second side surface 1000d of the load 1000, respectively. Once the load 1000 has moved past the first drive roller 310 and the second drive roller 410, as shown in FIG. Figure 1B As shown, the controller 900 controls the conveyor actuator 55a to stop driving the conveyor 55. At this time, the paper wrapping material WM extends across the front surface 1000a and extends along the first side surface 1000c and the second side surface 1000d of the load 1000.
[0025] Some types of paper wrapping materials (similar to plastic stretch film) have a certain amount of elasticity, so they can be stretched before being applied to the load to increase the restraining force of the wrap (stretched paper wrapping materials will squeeze the load more tightly than unstretched paper wrapping materials). In certain embodiments where the paper wrapping materials can be stretched, during this step, the controller 900 controls: (1) the roll actuator 210a so that the surface speed of the roll R and the linear speed of the paper wrapping material WM leaving the roll are less than the linear speed of the load 1000 in the moving direction MD, and / or the first drive roller actuator 310a so that the surface speed of the first drive roller 310 and the linear speed of the paper wrapping material WM leaving the first drive roller 310 are less than the linear speed of the load 1000 in the moving direction MD; and (2) the second drive roller actuator 410a so that the surface speed of the second drive roller 410 and the linear speed of the paper wrapping material WM leaving the second drive roller 410 are less than the linear speed of the load 1000 in the moving direction MD. This speed differential (where the load is moving faster than the paper wrapping material applied to the load) causes the paper wrapping material to stretch as it is applied to the load L, with the amount of stretching varying based on the speed differential (larger differences causing greater stretching).
[0026] like Figure 1C As shown, the controller 900 controls the first roller assembly actuator 300a to move the first drive roller 310 and the first idle roller 320 in the transverse direction TD from their original positions to a cover position closer to the second drive roller 410 and the second idle roller 420. During this movement, the first drive roller 310 pulls the paper wrapping material WM from the roll R and crosses a portion of the rear surface 1000b of the load 1000.
[0027] like Figure 1D As shown, the controller 900 then controls the gripper actuator 510a to control the gripper 510 to grip the paper wrapping material near where the paper wrapping material WM leaves the first drive roller 310. For clarity, the gripper 510 is not shown in FIG. Figures 1A to 1C or Figures 1H to 1J Shown in.
[0028] like Figure 1E As shown, the controller 900 controls the adhesive applicator actuator 610a to move and otherwise controls the adhesive applicator 610 to apply adhesive, which in this exemplary embodiment is a double-sided tape T (referred to in the figure for clarity), to the portion of the paper wrapping material WM that extends across the rear surface 1000b of the load 1000. Figure 1F In this exemplary embodiment, adhesive applicator 610 applies adhesive to the paper wrapping material at approximately the midpoint of the width of load 1000.
[0029] like Figure 1F As shown, the controller 900 controls the cutter actuator 710a to actuate the cutter 710 to cut the paper wrapping material WM from the roll R. In this exemplary embodiment, the controller 900 controls the cutter actuator 710a to cause the cutter 710 to protrude from the first driving roller 710, thereby cutting the paper wrapping material WM from the roll R. After cutting, the first driving roller 310 and the first idle roller 320 continue to hold the paper wrapping material WM extending from the roll R.
[0030] like Figure 1G As shown, the controller 900 controls the first roller assembly actuator 300a to move the first drive roller 310 and the first idler roller 320 from their jacketing positions back to their original positions close to the roll R in the transverse direction TD. In doing so, in some embodiments, the controller 900 controls the roll actuator 210a to rotate the roll R to wind any slack paper wrapping material WM onto the roll R. The controller 900 controls the second roller assembly actuator 400a to move the second drive roller 410 and the second idler roller 420 from their original positions to the jacketing positions closer to the first drive roller 310 and the second idler roller 320 in the transverse direction TD. During this movement, the remaining paper wrapping material WM on the second drive roller 410 unwinds and extends across the rear surface 1000b of the load 1000. The second drive roller 410 is positioned relative to the load 1000 so that it forces a portion of the unfolded paper wrapping material WM against an adhesive (here, tape T, not shown again for clarity), which adheres the paper wrapping material WM to itself and completes forming a wrap 1000s around the load L.
[0031] After the wrapping machine 100 forms the wrapping, the paper wrapping material WM is wrapped around the second drive roller 410 to prepare for the next wrapping cycle. Figure 1H As shown, the first roller assembly actuator 300a and the second roller assembly actuator 400a move the first drive roller 310 and the first idle roller 320 and the second drive roller 410 and the second idle roller 420 to respective reloading positions adjacent to each other. When this occurs, the controller 900 controls the roll actuator 210a to rotate the roll R to unwind the paper wrapping material WM from the roll R to compensate for the movement of the first drive roller 310 and the first idle roller 320. The controller 900 also controls the conveyor actuator 55a to drive the conveyor 55 to move the wrapped load 1000 in the moving direction MD.
[0032] like Fig. 1IAs shown, with the rollers in their reloading position, the controller 900 controls: (1) the roll actuator 210a to unwind the paper wrapping material WM from the roll R; (2) the first drive roller actuator 310a to feed the paper wrapping material WM to the second drive roller 410 and the second idler roller 420; and (3) the second drive roller actuator 410a to rotate the second drive roller 410 so that the paper wrapping material WM is wrapped around the second drive roller 410. Once the length of the paper wrapping material WM wrapped around the second drive roller 410 is approximately equal to the sum of the length and half the width of the incoming load 2000 ( Figure 1J ), the controller 900 stops the actuator. In some embodiments, the controller 900 controls the linear speed of the roll R and / or the drive rollers 310 and 410 to pre-stretch the paper wrapping material WM during this reloading step. For example, in one embodiment, the controller controls the roll actuator and the first drive roller actuator to pre-stretch the paper wrapping material between the roll and the first drive roller. In another embodiment, the controller controls the first drive roller actuator and the second drive roller actuator to pre-stretch the paper wrapping material as it moves between the two drive rollers.
[0033] like Figure 1J As shown, the controller 900 then controls the first roller assembly actuator 300a and the second roller assembly actuator 400a to move the first drive roller 310 and the first idler roller 320 and the second drive roller 410 and the second idler roller 420 back to their respective original positions in preparation for the incoming load 2000.
[0034] In some embodiments, multiple wrapping devices are positioned in series so that the conveying system can convey a load: (1) into and through a first wrapping device, whereby the first wrapping device applies a first paper wrapping material sleeve to the load; and then (2) into and through a second wrapping device, whereby the second wrapping device applies a second paper wrapping material sleeve around the first paper wrapping material sleeve.
[0035] In certain embodiments, the wrapping system includes a top sheet applicator configured to apply a sheet of paper wrapping material to the top surface of the load before the wrapping device forms the paper wrapping material sleeve around the load. This enables the wrapping system to provide five-sided protection for the load. Depending on the embodiment, the top sheet applicator may apply the sheet of paper wrapping material to the top surface of the load before the load reaches the wrapping device, or may be integrated into the wrapping device.
[0036] The paper wrapping material may be any suitable type of paper wrapping material, such as kraft paper, slightly creped paper, etc. The paper wrapping material may have any suitable width and any suitable thickness, and may or may not be stretchable depending on the embodiment.
[0037] In other embodiments, the wrapping system is configured to draw other types of wrapping material (such as plastic stretch film) from a roll and form a wrap of the wrapping material around the cargo load.
