Description

Title of the invention: Method and system using a neural network to predict a runway occupancy time by an aircraft. Technical field

[0001] The present invention relates to a system and a method for predicting a runway occupancy time by an aircraft. It also relates to an aircraft equipped with such a runway occupancy time prediction system. State of the art

[0002] Generally, the management of air traffic and the capacity of an aerodrome depends on the way in which the runways allowing the take-off and landing of aircraft, in particular transport aircraft, are used. For optimal and safe use of these runways, it is necessary to respect minimum separation distances, in particular between the arrival of two successive aircraft or between the arrival and departure of two successive aircraft on the same runway of the aerodrome.

[0003] This separation distance is determined based, among other things, on the runway occupation time of each aircraft.

[0004] The runway occupation time can be predicted on the ground by air traffic control systems. The runway occupation time is then estimated from statistical data on the occupation of each runway depending on the types of aircraft, climatic conditions, etc. However, since this ground determination of the occupation time does not depend on current aircraft parameter data, it is necessary to take into account additional margins in the separations between arrivals, departures or arrival and departure, in order to overcome the uncertainty on the behavior of the aircraft (for example, exit route planned by the pilot).

[0005] To overcome this drawback, document FR-1909228 provides a system for predicting the time an aircraft occupies a runway, which uses current parameters of the aircraft during the landing or takeoff phase for the prediction. The runway occupancy time is transmitted directly to air traffic control, which can, in return, adapt the separations between two arrivals, two departures, or an arrival and a departure of aircraft on the same runway.

[0006] However, this advantageous solution involves numerous calculations and requires a relatively large computing capacity.

[0007] There is therefore a need to find a solution making it possible to predict a runway occupation time by an aircraft, with a reduced need for computing capacity and a reduced computing time. Statement of the invention

[0008] The present invention relates to a method for predicting a runway occupation time of an aerodrome by an aircraft during a landing of the aircraft, which makes it possible to provide a solution to meet the aforementioned need.

[0009] According to the invention, said method comprises at least the following series of steps: - a generation step, implemented by a generation unit, to generate at least one current value of a parameter relating to the movement of the aircraft; - a data processing step, implemented by an avionics computer, at least to calculate a value of the runway occupation time; and - a transmission step, implemented by a transmission unit, for transmitting at least said value of the runway occupation time to a user system, is remarkable in that it comprises a selection step, implemented by a selection unit, to allow a crew member of the aircraft, at least to select an exit from the runway used for landing, said exit being characterized by an exit type and an exit distance, and in that in the data processing step, the avionics computer uses at least the following data: an initial ground speed generated in the generation step and an exit type and an exit distance from the exit selected in the selection step, and it calculates, using this data, using a prediction model comprising a neural network trained from landing data from previous landings, said value of the runway occupation time.

[0010] This method thus uses far fewer parameters than the usual solution mentioned above for calculating the value of the runway occupation time, and this by implementing a simplified calculation thanks to the use of a neural network, which makes it possible to use fewer computing resources for the prediction and to reduce the computing time.

[0011] Advantageously, in the data processing step, the avionics computer also uses a braking mode selected for an automatic braking system of the aircraft, to calculate the value of the runway occupation time.

[0012] In a particular embodiment, at the data processing step, the avionics computer generates an occupancy report comprising at least some of the following information: - the value of the runway occupation time, as calculated at the data processing stage; - an indication of confidence in said runway occupancy time value; - the runway of the aerodrome, used for landing; and - the output of said track, as selected at the selection step.

[0013] In this particular embodiment, advantageously, in the transmission step, the occupancy report generated in the data processing step is transmitted to an air traffic control system of the aerodrome in at least one of the following situations: - at the request of the air traffic control system; - in the event that the value of the runway occupation time, as calculated, is greater than a given threshold value; and - in case of change of the exit of the track.

[0014] Furthermore, advantageously, the data processing step comprises a recording sub-step for recording the value of the track occupancy time, as calculated.

[0015] Furthermore, advantageously, the method comprises a preliminary learning step, to implement before said series of steps, a learning of the prediction model from landing data from previous landings and corresponding values of runway occupation time, said prediction model being integrated into the avionics computer.

[0016] The present invention also relates to a system for predicting the occupation time of a runway of an aerodrome by an aircraft during a landing of the aircraft, said system comprising at least: - a generation unit configured to generate at least one current value of a parameter relating to the movement of the aircraft; - an avionics computer configured at least to calculate a value of the runway occupation time; and - a transmission unit configured to transmit at least said value of the runway occupation time to a user system.

[0017] According to the invention, said system further comprises a selection unit configured to allow at least one crew member of the aircraft to select an exit from the runway used for landing, said exit being characterized by an exit type and an exit distance, and the avionics computer uses the following data: an initial ground speed generated by the generation unit and an exit type and an exit distance from the exit selected using the selection unit, and it is configured to calculate, using this data, using a prediction model comprising a neural network trained on the basis of landing data from previous landings, said value of the runway occupation time.

[0018] In a particular embodiment, the selection unit corresponds to at least one of the following human-machine interfaces: - a human-machine interface of an electronic on-board bag; - a human-machine interface of an aircraft flight management system.

[0019] Furthermore, advantageously, the computing unit is part of one of the following systems of the aircraft: - a flight management system; - an air traffic services unit.

[0020] The present invention further relates to an aircraft, in particular a transport aircraft, which is equipped with a system for predicting a runway occupancy time, such as that described above. Brief description of the figures

[0021] The attached figures will make it clear how the invention can be implemented. In these figures, identical references designate similar elements.

[0022] [Fig.l] is a block diagram of a runway occupancy time prediction system illustrating one embodiment of the invention.

[0023] [Fig.2] represents a top view of a part of an aerodrome, provided with a runway, used for the landing of an aircraft equipped with a system for predicting a runway occupancy time.

[0024] [Fig.3] schematically illustrates a method for predicting a runway occupancy time. Detailed description

[0025] The runway occupation time prediction system (hereinafter “prediction system” 1) making it possible to illustrate the invention, is shown schematically, in a particular embodiment, in [Fig. 1]. This prediction system 1 is intended to predict the time that an aircraft AC, in particular a transport aircraft, will occupy on a runway R of an aerodrome 2 partially shown in [Fig. 2], during its landing on this runway R.

[0026] As shown very schematically in [Fig.2], this prediction system 1 is mounted on the aircraft AC, and it predicts the runway occupancy time, of the ROT type (for “Runway Occupancy Time” in English), when the aircraft AC is preparing to land.

[0027] In the context of the present invention, the term "runway" R means the surface of the aerodrome 2 on which the aircraft AC can land (or take off). Each runway R of the aerodrome 2 comprises exits (or entrances), as shown in [Fig. 2] for exits SI, S2, S3 and S4, which can be used for landing. The aerodrome also comprises taxiways T, in particular at these exits SI, S2, S3 and S4, which allow the aircraft AC to move from the runway R to a parking area. operation (not shown) of aerodrome 2, after landing.

[0028] Furthermore, the runway occupation time which is determined by the prediction system 1 can represent the sum of an approach time and a taxiing time of the aircraft AC.

[0029] The approach time corresponds to the flight time of the aircraft AC between the position of the aircraft AC when it passes over the threshold RT (runway threshold) of the runway R at a height of approximately 15 meters above the ground and a position of the aircraft AC at which the wheels of its landing gear come into contact with the ground of the runway. As for the taxiing time, it corresponds to the time during which the aircraft AC taxis on the runway R between the position at which the wheels of the aircraft AC touch the ground of the runway R and the position of the aircraft AC at the exit of the runway, that is to say the position at which the runway R is considered free and therefore usable for another landing or takeoff.

[0030] In the following description, referring to the example of [Fig.2], it is considered that the aircraft will leave runway R (provided in particular with exits S1, S2, S3 and S4) at exit S2.

[0031] The runway occupation time, upon landing, therefore corresponds to the time between the position of the aircraft AC when it passes above the threshold RT and the position of the aircraft AC when it leaves the runway R.

[0032] In a preferred embodiment, shown in [Fig.l], the prediction system 1 comprises: - a generation unit 3 (GEN for “generation unit” in English) to generate at least one current value of a parameter relating to the movement of the aircraft AC; - a selection unit 4 (SELEC for “selection unit” in English) configured to allow at least one crew member of the aircraft AC to select an exit of the runway R used for landing, namely exit S2 in the example of [Fig.2]; - an avionics computer 5 connected via links 6 and 7, respectively, to the generation unit 3 and to the selection unit 4, the avionics computer 5 comprising a calculation unit 8 (COMP for “computation unit” in English) configured at least to calculate a value of the runway occupation time; and - a transmission unit 9 (TRANS for “transmission unit” in English) connected via a link 10 to the avionics computer 5 and configured to transmit to a user system 11 (USER for “user System” in English) via a link 12, said value determined by the calculation unit 8 of the runway occupation time.

[0033] To do this, the avionics computer 5 receives at least the following data, specified below: - an initial ground speed generated in the usual way by the generation unit 3. This initial ground speed represents the speed of the aircraft AC when it touches the ground on landing on runway R and it corresponds to a final approach speed, determined in the usual way; and - the type of exit and the exit distance, specified below, of exit S2 (of runway R) which was selected by a crew member using selection unit 4. Each exit SI, S2, S3, S4 of runway R likely to be used by aircraft AC is characterized by an exit type and an exit distance.

[0034] In addition, the calculation unit 8 of the avionics computer 5 determines, using at least the aforementioned data that the avionics computer 5 has received, the value of the runway occupation time. To do this, the calculation unit 8 uses a prediction model 13 (MOD for “prediction model” in English) preferably integrated into the calculation unit 8. This prediction model 13 comprises a neural network, which has been trained using landing data from previous flights and landings, as specified below.

[0035] In a preferred embodiment, the generation unit 3 generates the initial ground speed of the aircraft AC, in the usual manner, from the current values of the following parameters: - the approach speed of the aircraft AC; - wind speed and direction at aerodrome 2; - the altitude of aerodrome 2; and - the temperature at aerodrome 2.

[0036] In a first particular embodiment, the selection unit 4 used by a pilot, in particular to select the exit S2 of the runway R, which he plans to take, corresponds to a man-machine interface of an electronic flight bag of the EFB type (for “Electronic Flight Bag” in English).

[0037] Furthermore, in a second particular embodiment, the selection unit 4 corresponds to a man-machine interface, of the MCDU type (for “Multi Control Display Unit” in English), of a flight management system of the FMS type (for “Flight Management System” in English).

[0038] Furthermore, within the framework of the present invention, the avionics computer 5 can correspond to different computers or calculation systems present on the aircraft AC.

[0039] In a first particular embodiment, the avionics computer 5 is part of a flight management system.

[0040] Furthermore, in a second particular embodiment, the avionics computer 5 is part of an air traffic services unit, of the ATSU type (for “Air Traffic Service Unit” in English).

[0041] Furthermore, as shown in [Fig.l], in a preferred embodiment, the prediction system 1 comprises a recording unit 14 (REGIS for “registration unit” in English) integrated for example in the avionics computer 5. This recording unit 14 is intended to record the value of the runway occupation time, calculated by the calculation unit 8. This value thus recorded can be transmitted subsequently to a user system, such as the user system 11 for example via the transmission unit 9.

[0042] As shown in [Fig.l], the avionics computer 5 further comprises a verification module 15 (VERIF for “verification module” in English). This verification module 15 is capable of comparing the runway occupation time value, determined by the calculation unit 8, with a predetermined threshold value of runway occupation time R, which is for example recorded in the calculation unit 8 or in a memory of the prediction system 1. The verification module 15 is also capable of generating alert information (which is transmitted to the user system 11), if the predicted value of the runway occupation time is greater than this threshold value. The threshold value may represent a maximum runway occupation time R that must be respected in order to ensure the safety of separation between aircraft, namely between two arrivals or between a departure and an arrival on the same runway R.

[0043] The user system 11 may be an air traffic control system (for example a storage unit, a data processing unit, etc.) used by an air traffic controller in the context of air traffic control on approach and on the aerodrome. The user system 11 may comprise, for example, a display screen allowing an operator, for example an air traffic controller, to view the occupation time of the aircraft AC on the runway R.

[0044] Furthermore, the link 12 between the avionics computer 5 on board the aircraft AC and the user system 1 is, preferably, a standard data transmission link, in particular an ADS-C type data transmission link (for “Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Contract” in English).

[0045] The prediction system 1, as described above, can be implemented in already existing avionics systems and computers and thus has a reduced cost.

[0046] Said prediction system 1 implements a method P for predicting a runway occupancy time, as shown in [Fig. 3]. The method P comprises at least the following sequence of steps: - a generation step El, implemented by the generation unit 3, to generate at least one current value of a parameter relating to the movement of the aircraft AC; - a selection step E2, implemented by the selection unit 4, to allow a crew member of the aircraft AC to select at least one exit S2 of the runway R used for landing; - a data processing step E3 which comprises a calculation sub-step E3A, implemented by the calculation unit 8 of the avionics computer 5, to calculate at least one value of the runway occupation time, the calculation sub-step E3A using for this purpose an initial ground speed generated in the generation step El and an exit type and an exit distance from the exit S2 selected in the selection step E2; and - a transmission step E4, implemented by the transmission unit 9, to transmit at least said value of the runway occupation time to the user system 11.

[0047] The steps of method P are described in more detail below.

[0048] In a preferred embodiment, in the generation step E1, the generation unit 3 generates the initial ground speed of the aircraft AC in the usual manner. Preferably, the generation unit 3 can generate this initial ground speed by taking into account the current values (available on the aircraft AC) of the following parameters, which can have an influence on this ground speed: - the approach speed of the aircraft AC; - wind speed and direction at aerodrome 2; - the altitude of aerodrome 2; and - the temperature at aerodrome 2.

[0049] In the calculation sub-step E3A of the data processing step E3, the calculation unit 8 uses, to calculate the value of the runway occupation time, in addition to the initial ground speed generated in the generation step E1, the type of exit and the exit distance of the exit selected in the selection step E2, namely the exit S2 of the runway R in the example of [Fig.2],

[0050] Regarding the type of exit, within the framework of the present invention, different types of exit can be envisaged. Preferably, the type of exit depends on the speed at which the aircraft AC leaves the runway R at the corresponding exit S2.

[0051] In a preferred embodiment, two types of exit are considered. These types depend on the value of an angle a between the direction L1 of the runway R and the direction L2 of the exit considered for leaving the runway R, as shown for the exit S2 in [Fig. 2]. A first type corresponds to an angle a less than a predetermined value a0 and represents an exit that the aircraft AC can take at a high speed, for example at a taxiing speed of the order of 75 to 90 kilometers per hour, and the second type corresponds to an angle a greater than or equal to this predetermined value a0 and represents an exit that the aircraft AC must take at a lower speed. In a particular embodiment, the predetermined value a0 is equal to 45°.

[0052] Furthermore, the output distance D corresponds to the distance between the threshold RT of the track and the selected output, as shown for output S2 in [Fig.2].

[0053] The selection step E2 and the transmission of information relating to the selected exit S2, namely on the one hand the exit distance D between the threshold RT of the track and the exit S2 (along the track R) and on the other hand the type of exit, can be implemented in different ways.

[0054] In a first embodiment, at the selection step E2, the pilot, in addition to selecting the exit S2 of the runway R, enters into the prediction system 1 and in particular into the avionics computer 5 using the selection unit 4, both the exit distance and the type of exit concerning this exit S2.

[0055] In a second embodiment, at the selection step E2, the pilot only makes a selection of the output S2 (which will be used to exit the track R) using the selection unit 4.

[0056] In a first particular embodiment of this second embodiment, this selection is carried out by entering the name of the output using the selection unit 4.

[0057] In a second particular embodiment of this second embodiment, the selection unit 4 comprises a display device which displays a plan, at least the track R with its outputs S1 to S4, and the pilot selects the output directly on the plan, for example by bringing a cursor there and validating the position using a usual computer means such as a numeric keypad or a touch interface for example.

[0058] In this second embodiment, the selection unit 4 is configured to automatically provide the exit distance and the exit type which correspond to those of the exit S2 selected by the pilot.

[0059] In the calculation sub-step E3A of the data processing step E3, the calculation unit 8 of the avionics computer 5 therefore uses the following data: - an initial ground speed (corresponding to the speed of the aircraft when it touches the ground, which is equal to a final approach speed) generated by the generation unit 3; and - the type of exit and the distance of the exit from the S2 exit (of the R track) selected using the selection unit 4.

[0060] In a particular embodiment, in the calculation sub-step E3A, the calculation unit 8 of the avionics computer 5 also uses a braking mode selected for a usual automatic braking system of the “autobrake” or “brake-to-vacate” type of the aircraft, to calculate the value of the runway occupation time. In this particular embodiment, the method P therefore takes into account the deceleration capabilities of the aircraft.

[0061] Consequently, the calculation sub-step E3A of the method P only uses the values of a few parameters, i.e. much fewer parameters than the usual solution mentioned above, for the prediction, which makes it possible to use fewer resources. calculation (of the avionics computer 5) and to reduce the calculation time.

[0062] The calculation unit 8 determines, using these few parameters, said value of the runway occupation time, using for this the prediction model 13 comprising a neural network specified below.

[0063] Thus, the method P implements a simplified calculation thanks to the use of this neural network, which also contributes to the reduction of the computing resources necessary for the prediction and to the reduction of the computing time.

[0064] In a particular embodiment, the data processing step E3 also comprises a report generation sub-step E3B, in which the calculation unit 8 of the avionics computer 5 generates an occupancy report. This occupancy report comprises at least some (and preferably all) of the following information: - the value of the runway occupation time R, as calculated in calculation sub-step E3A; - an indication of confidence in said runway occupancy time value; - runway R of aerodrome 2, used for landing; - the output S2 of said track R, as selected in the selection step E2.

[0065] The confidence indication of said value of the runway occupation time depends on the precision of the calculation. This confidence indication may, in particular, be expressed in a unit of time (for example in seconds) and correspond to the maximum error time of the value (of the runway occupation time) calculated by the calculation unit 8.

[0066] The interest of this confidence indication, for an air traffic controller, is to know what level of confidence he can have in the value of the runway occupation time received so as to enable him to optimize the minimum separation with the following aircraft which will use the same runway (for a landing or a takeoff). This also provides an indication to the air traffic controller to enable him to estimate the level of attention he must pay to the AC aircraft during its landing.

[0067] In this particular embodiment, the occupancy report generated in the report generation sub-step E3B is preferably also transmitted, in the transmission step E4, to a user system (such as the user system 1) and in particular to an air traffic control system of the aerodrome. The value of the runway occupancy time or this occupancy report can be transmitted to the air traffic control system approximately 30 minutes before landing, which allows an air traffic controller to adapt the separations if necessary.

[0068] In a preferred implementation of this particular embodiment, the occupancy report is transmitted to the air traffic control system of the aerodrome in at least one of the following situations: - at the request of the air traffic control system; - in the event that the value of the runway occupation time, as calculated, is greater than a given threshold value; and - in case of change of the exit of the track.

[0069] Preferably, the occupancy report is transmitted each time one of these situations occurs.

[0070] The transmission of the runway occupation time value by an aircraft AC to an air traffic controller allows the latter to adapt the separation of the aircraft, between the arrival of two successive aircraft or between the arrival and departure of two successive aircraft on the same runway R of aerodrome 2.

[0071] The data processing step E3 of the method P also comprises a recording sub-step E3C for recording the value of the runway occupancy time, calculated in the calculation sub-step E3A. The value thus recorded can be transmitted subsequently to the user system 1 and can, for example, be used for future improvement of the prediction model.

[0072] Furthermore, the data processing step E3 of the method P also comprises a verification sub-step E3D.

[0073] During this E3D verification sub-step, the verification unit 15 compares the predetermined threshold value of the runway occupation time with the value of the runway occupation time, calculated by the calculation unit 8. If the latter value is greater than the threshold value, the verification unit 15 can emit alert information relating to this comparison result, which can be transmitted to a user system, and in particular to an air traffic control system. This information allows an air traffic controller, for example, to adapt the separations between two arrivals. Preferably, if the calculated value is less than or equal to the threshold value, the verification unit 15 does not emit any information.

[0074] This predetermined threshold value may represent a limit value that the value of the occupation time of a runway, calculated by the calculation unit 8, must not exceed. It may be a value of occupation time of a runway determined by the user system 1 and comprising margins of error depending in particular on the confidence indicator.

[0075] Furthermore, the method P also comprises a preliminary learning step E0. This preliminary learning step E0 is carried out prior to the implementation of the sequence of steps E1, E2, E3 and E4 and has the purpose of defining the prediction model 13 used in the data processing step E3.

[0076] This preliminary learning step E0 implements learning (of the "machine learning" type, with a learning base) of the prediction model, from landing data from previous landings and corresponding values runway occupation time, said prediction model 13 being integrated into the avionics computer 5.

[0077] The prediction model is based on a neural network. In a preferred embodiment, this neural network is trained from landing data recorded during several thousand actual landings. Such a volume of landing data (obtained, moreover, from real situations) makes it possible to obtain a particularly accurate prediction model.

[0078] The landing data which form the learning base preferably comprise, for each landing taken into account, the values of the input data used by the calculation unit 8, namely mainly the initial ground speed, the type of exit and the exit distance, as well as the corresponding value of the runway occupation time.

[0079] In addition, the prediction system 1 is tested, under real conditions, to generate the confidence indication which is associated with the weather prediction. This makes it possible to provide accurate information which allows the air traffic controller to optimize the minimum separation with the following aircraft which uses the same runway.

[0080] The prediction system 1 on board the aircraft AC is therefore intended to provide assistance with the landing of the aircraft AC. By way of illustration, an example of a landing procedure for the aircraft AC provided with the prediction system 1 may comprise the following steps: - aircraft AC, approaching aerodrome 2, declares itself able to determine the runway occupancy time, using the on-board prediction system 1; - air traffic control establishes contact with the AC aircraft, via a data transmission link, and indicates to it the runway R to use; - the crew of aircraft AC prepares the descent and selects an exit S2 of runway R which will be used for landing; - the prediction system 1 determines the runway occupancy time and establishes an occupancy report; - the prediction system 1 sends the occupancy report to air traffic control, using the transmission unit 9; - air traffic control uses this occupancy report to define separation on final approach; - aircraft AC lands on runway R and leaves this runway R (after landing) via the selected exit S2.

[0081] The prediction system 1 and the method P, as described above, have many advantages. In particular, the prediction they make: - can be implemented by systems, in particular by an existing avionics computer; - uses few parameters and notably much fewer parameters than usual solutions, to calculate the value of the runway occupation time; - provides an accurate result, thanks to learning carried out from real landing data to generate the prediction model and the communication of a confidence indicator; - implements a simplified calculation, thanks to the use of a neural network; - thus uses fewer computing resources for prediction than usual solutions; and - thus presents a reduced calculation time.
