Process for the progressive cooling of gas mixtures, in particular flue gases, in the presence of oxygen or ozone, to progressively lower temperatures down to – 170°C, allowing both the progressive transformation of nitrogen monoxide NO into nitrogen dioxide NO2 and the direct passage of nitrogen dioxide NO2 from the gas phase to the solid phase on exchange surfaces generating cold.
