Description

Technical Field

[0001] This application claims the benefit of priority based on Korean Patent Application No. 10-2023-0160984 filed on November 20, 2023, and the entire content of the Korean patent application is incorporated herein by reference.

[0002] The present invention relates to a structure of a battery module including a cell stack in which a plurality of pouch types are stacked, and preventing thermal runaway of the module unit due to heat propagation between cells.

Background Art

[0003] Secondary batteries having high applicability to product groups and electrical characteristics such as high energy density are widely applied not only to portable devices but also to electric vehicles or hybrid vehicles driven by an electric drive source, power storage devices, and the like. These secondary batteries are attracting attention as a new energy source not only because of the primary advantage of significantly reducing the use of fossil fuels but also because they are environmentally friendly and improve energy efficiency in that no by-products are generated by the use of energy.

[0004] For small mobile devices, one or two to three battery cells are used per device, whereas for medium- to large-sized devices such as automobiles, high output and large capacity are required. Therefore, medium- to large-sized battery modules in which a large number of battery cells are electrically connected are used.

[0005] Medium- to large-sized battery modules are preferably manufactured in as small a size and weight as possible, and thus, prismatic batteries, pouch-type batteries, etc. that can be stacked with a high degree of integration and have a small weight-to-capacity ratio are mainly used as battery cells of medium- to large-sized battery modules.

[0006] Figure 1 shows the structure of a pouch-type battery cell. Referring to this, a typical pouch-type battery cell 11 has a configuration in which an electrode assembly 110 is housed in a pouch 111. The pouch 111 may be folded in half to house the electrode assembly 110 and fused-sealed by a sealing portion 111S provided on one side in the height direction. Because the battery cell 11 has high voltage and / or high capacity, multiple cells can be stacked to form a cell stack.

[0007] Figure 2 shows the configuration of a cell stack. Referring to this, multiple battery cells 11 can be stacked in the width direction to form a cell stack 1. The cell stack 1 may also include barrier members 12 interposed between the battery cells 11 to prevent heat transfer between them. In this case, the battery cells 11 can form one or more cell banks 10 isolated by the barrier members 12. These cell stacks 1 can be electrically connected to form a single module.

[0008] Figures 3 and 4 show the structure of a typical battery module. Referring to these, the battery module (M) may include a busbar frame assembly 2 connected to the front of the cell stack 1 to electrically connect the battery cells 11 to each other, and a housing 3 that houses the cell stack 1.

[0009] On the other hand, the battery cell 11 may experience thermal runaway due to short circuits, shocks, etc. Since the battery cells 11 are stacked in the width direction, heat can be conducted from a ignited cell to adjacent cells. This poses a risk of not only the battery cell 11 but also other battery cells igniting in a chain reaction, resulting in thermal runaway at the module level.

[0010] Furthermore, the high-temperature gas and flame generated at this time can be discharged upwards to the battery cell 11 by the melting of the fused portion of the sealing portion 111S. The gas and flame may propagate heat to other battery cells through the free space within the housing above the cell stack 1.

[0011] To prevent this heat transfer, solutions have been proposed in which the barrier member 12 is interposed between the battery cells 11. However, these barrier members 12 have the problem that heat concentrates in one place, easily conducting heat or causing melting, and they have the limitation that they cannot prevent heat transfer by gas and flame convection through the free space above the cell stack 1. [Overview of the Initiative] [Problems that the invention aims to solve]

[0012] This invention was conceived against the background of the prior art described above, and aims to provide a battery module structure that prevents thermal runaway at the module level by preventing heat conduction between cells.

[0013] The present invention also aims to provide a battery module structure that prevents localized damage to barrier members and rapid temperature increases caused by gas and flames resulting from the ignition of battery cells.

[0014] Another technical problem of the present invention is to provide a battery module structure that includes a barrier member that can maintain its structure without deformation even in a high-temperature, high-pressure environment.

[0015] Another object of the present invention is to provide a battery module structure that prevents heat transfer by gas and flame convection through the free space within the housing.

[0016] The present invention also aims to provide a battery module structure that prevents ignition due to short circuits by strengthening the insulation between battery cells and between battery cells and the housing.

[0017] The technical problems of the present invention are not limited to the objectives mentioned above. Other objectives and advantages of the present invention not mentioned can be understood from the following description and more clearly from the embodiments of the present invention. Furthermore, it is readily apparent that the objectives and advantages of the present invention can be achieved by the means and combinations thereof described in the claims. [Means for solving the problem]

[0018] To solve the above problems, the present invention provides a battery module structure comprising a cell stack including a plurality of battery cells stacked in the width direction, at least one barrier member interposed between the battery cells and stacked together with the battery cells in the width direction, and a housing for housing the cell stack, wherein the barrier member includes a metal layer and insulating layers provided on both sides of the metal layer in the width direction.

[0019] By including the metal layer in the barrier member, the barrier member can more effectively block the transfer of radiant heat between cells, thereby suppressing localized temperature increases in the barrier member.

[0020] Preferably, the insulating layer has a greater thickness in the width direction than the metal layer on each side of the metal layer in the width direction. If the thickness of the metal layer is increased, the insulation distance between the pair of battery cells interposed by the barrier member will decrease, potentially increasing the possibility of a short circuit. In order to maximize both the heat dispersion and radiant heat blocking effect of the metal layer and the insulation effect between cells by the insulating layer, it is preferable that the thickness of the metal layer be as thin as possible and the thickness of the insulating layer be greater than that. Furthermore, as will be described later, it is preferable that the thickness of the insulating layer be greater than that of the metal layer in order to ensure the rigidity of the insulating layer.

[0021] The insulating layer may be formed of a rigid body. The rigid body may mean a member having a yield strength and / or bending rigidity of a predetermined level or higher. In other words, the insulating layer may have rigidity that can structurally resist the high-pressure gas and flames emitted by the ignition of the battery cell.

[0022] Preferably, the insulating layer has heat resistance. This allows insulation between cells to be maintained even under thermal runaway conditions, and also maintains the structural rigidity of the barrier member. When the structure of the insulating layer is maintained even at high temperatures, it is advantageous in preventing short circuits between cells and preventing heat propagation due to gas and flame convection.

[0023] The barrier member may include a heat insulating layer provided on one or both sides in the width direction of the metal layer. Preferably, the heat insulating layer has a greater thickness in the width direction than the metal layer or the insulating layer.

[0024] The thermal insulation layer may be compressible in the width direction. This allows the thermal insulation layer to block heat conduction between the battery cells and absorb assembly tolerances and / or swelling of the battery cells, thereby improving the structural stability of the battery module.

[0025] For example, the thermal insulation layer may include a porous foam material. These foam materials possess both thermal insulation and compressibility, enabling proper insulation between cells and absorption of tolerances.

[0026] The heat insulating layer may be provided on the outside in the width direction of the insulating layer. In other words, the heat insulating layer may be provided so as to be adjacent to the battery cell compared to the insulating layer. As a result, even if the battery cell ignites on one side of the barrier member in the width direction and the heat insulating layer melts, the heat insulating layer provided on the other side of the barrier member in the width direction will not melt, and the barrier member will still be able to exert its heat insulating effect.

[0027] One end portion of the barrier member may protrude in one side direction compared to one end portion of the battery cell. By the one end portion of the barrier member protruding compared to the battery cell, heat propagation due to convection of gas and flame through the free space between the cell laminate and the housing can be blocked. At this time, the insulating layer is preferably formed of a heat-resistant rigid body as described above so that its structure and rigidity can be maintained against high-pressure gas and flame.

[0028] One end portions of the metal layer and the insulating layer may protrude in one side direction compared to one end portions of the battery cell and the heat insulating layer. By the metal layer and the insulating layer protruding compared to the heat insulating layer, the metal layer and the insulating layer can gradually dissipate the heat absorbed from the battery cell. Thereby, a rapid temperature rise of the entire battery module can be prevented.

[0029] In order for the barrier member to effectively prevent convection of gas and flame through the free space, the length by which one end portion of the barrier member protrudes from one end portion of the battery cell is preferably 1 / 2 or more of the shortest distance between one end portion of the battery cell and the housing.

[0030] On the inner side of one side wall of the housing, a groove portion may be provided that faces inward so as to accommodate the protruding one end portion of the barrier member. By the one end portion of the barrier member being accommodated in the groove portion, the free space between the cell laminate and the housing may be completely isolated in the width direction.

[0031] The groove portion may be provided in an insulating cover including an insulating material and connected to the housing on the inner side of one side wall of the housing. Thereby, the metal layer included in the barrier member and the housing are insulated from each other, and a short circuit between the battery cells and between the battery cells and the housing can be more effectively prevented.

[0032] The present invention also provides a battery pack incorporating the battery module and a structure for an automobile incorporating the battery pack.

[0033] Multiple battery modules can be integrated to form a battery pack in order to increase their capacity and / or voltage. The battery pack may include a venting device that can expel gases and flames emitted in the event of a fire in the battery modules. The battery pack can be built into an automobile as a power source. The automobile may include electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles, and the like. [Effects of the Invention]

[0034] The present invention can provide a battery module structure in which heat transfer between battery cells is prevented by interposing a heat-resistant and / or heat-insulating barrier member between the battery cells.

[0035] The present invention also provides a battery module structure in which the thermal conductivity within the barrier member is increased by a metal layer provided in the barrier member, thereby blocking heat transfer between cells due to radiant heat and localized temperature rises.

[0036] Another effect of the present invention is that it provides a battery module structure that includes a barrier member, which, by including a heat-resistant rigid plate, can maintain its structure without deformation even under high temperature and pressure gases and flames.

[0037] The present invention can also provide a battery module structure in which heat transfer between cells due to gas and flame convection through the free space within the housing is blocked by a barrier member extending from the cell stack into the housing.

[0038] Another advantage of the present invention is that it provides a battery module structure in which short circuits are prevented under normal conditions and in the event of cell ignition, by an insulating layer included in the barrier member and an insulating cover provided inside the housing.

[0039] Furthermore, the present invention can provide various other effects, which will be described in each embodiment, or, in cases where such effects can be easily inferred by an ordinary person, such descriptions will be omitted. [Brief explanation of the drawing]

[0048] Preferred embodiments of the present invention will be described below with reference to the accompanying drawings.

[0049] [Structure of battery cells and cell stacks] In the following, with reference to Figures 5 to 7, the structure of a battery cell, a barrier member, and a cell stack in which these are stacked according to one embodiment of the present invention will be described in detail.

[0050] Figure 5 shows the structure of a battery cell according to one embodiment of the present invention. Referring to this, the battery cell 11 according to one embodiment of the present invention may include an electrode assembly 110 and a pouch 111 that houses and seals the electrode assembly 110.

[0051] The pouch 111 may be folded to surround the electrode assembly 110 and sealed by a sealing portion 111S on one side in the height direction. The sealing may be by fusion, which allows it to melt under high heat. Therefore, if the battery cell 11 ignites due to a short circuit or the like, there is a high possibility that high-temperature gas and flames will be discharged to the outside of the pouch 111 through the sealing portion 111S.

[0052] The battery cell 11 may include electrode leads that extend from the electrode assembly 110 and protrude outside the pouch 111. The electrode leads can electrically connect the electrode assembly 110 to the outside.

[0053] Figure 6 shows the structure of a barrier member according to one embodiment of the present invention. Referring to this, the barrier member 12 may include a metal layer 120 and insulating layers 121 provided on both sides in the width direction thereof.

[0054] The metal layer 120 may contain a metal material with high thermal conductivity. For example, the metal layer 120 may be made of a thin metal foil material. .

[0055] The insulating layer 121 may be made of an insulating material. Preferably, the insulating layer 121 has heat resistance and preferably has a predetermined bending rigidity. For example, the insulating layer 121 may contain a synthetic resin or mica material of a predetermined thickness or greater that has insulating and heat-resistant properties.

[0056] The thickness of the insulating layer 121 is preferably greater than the thickness of the metal layer 120.

[0057] The barrier member 12 may include a heat insulating layer 122 provided on both sides of the metal layer 120 in the width direction. Preferably, the heat insulating layer 122 is provided on the outside in the width direction compared to the insulating layer 121.

[0058] The thermal insulation layer 122 is preferably compressible in the width direction. For example, the thermal insulation layer 122 may include a porous foam material that has excellent thermal insulation and compressibility, but the material of the thermal insulation layer 122 is not limited thereto.

[0059] Figure 7 shows the configuration of a cell stack according to one embodiment of the present invention. Referring to this, multiple battery cells 11 can be stacked in the width direction to constitute the cell stack 1. In this case, one or more barrier members 12 may be provided.

[0060] One or more of the battery cells 100 can come together to form a plurality of cell banks 10 isolated by the barrier member 12. In this case, the barrier member 12 can prevent heat propagation between the cell banks 10 and, by including the insulating layer 121, can prevent short circuits between the battery cells 11.

[0061] If the barrier member 12 includes the compressible heat insulating layer 122, the barrier member 12 can absorb assembly tolerances between the cell banks 10 and swelling of the battery cells 11.

[0062] [General structure of a battery module] The following describes the general structure of a battery module according to one embodiment of the present invention with reference to Figures 8 and 9.

[0063] Figures 8 and 9 show the structure of a battery module according to one embodiment of the present invention. Referring to these drawings, the cell stack 1 can be housed in the housing 3 to constitute a battery module (M).

[0064] A busbar frame assembly 2 may be bonded to one side of the cell laminate 1 in the longitudinal direction.

[0065] The busbar frame assembly 2 may include a pair of ends that protrude from the housing 3 so as to be able to electrically connect the electrode leads to each other and electrically connect the entire cell stack 1 to the outside.

[0066] The busbar frame assembly 2 may include a busbar frame that constitutes the main body, a slit through which the electrode leads pass, and a busbar through which the electrode leads pass and are connected.

[0067] The housing 3 may include a module frame 30 having a bottom surface and a pair of side walls and housing the cell stack 1, a pair of end plates 32 covering the front and rear of the cell stack 1, and a top plate 31 covering the top of the cell stack 1.

[0068] The top plate 31 may be provided with vent holes (not shown) for discharging gas and flames generated from the cell stack 1 upwards. Preferably, multiple vent holes (not shown) are provided for the structural rigidity of the top plate 31 and for smooth gas discharge.

[0069] An insulating cover 310 may be connected to the bottom surface of the top plate 31 to insulate the cell laminate 1 from the top plate 31. The insulating cover 310 may be made of an insulating material and preferably has heat resistance.

[0070] [Arrangement structure of barrier members] In the following, with reference to Figures 10 to 12, a specific arrangement structure of the barrier member according to one embodiment of the present invention will be described in detail.

[0071] Figures 10 and 11 show a cross-section of a battery module according to one embodiment of the present invention, and Figure 12 shows the main part of Figure 11. Referring to these drawings, one end of the barrier member 12 may protrude to one side compared to one end of the battery cell 11. In other words, a predetermined free space may be formed between the cell stack 1 and the housing 3, in which case one end of the barrier member 12 may extend toward the housing 3 side through the free space.

[0072] In this case, since the thickness (L2) of the insulating layer 121 is even greater than the thickness (L1) of the metal layer 120, it is preferable that the reduction in the insulation distance between cells due to the metal layer 120 is minimized, and the rigidity of the insulating layer 121 and its support force on the metal layer 120 are increased. By having an appropriate thickness and rigidity for the insulating layer 121, the protruding end of the barrier member 12 can maintain its structure without being deformed by high-pressure, high-temperature gas and flames.

[0073] In this embodiment, one end of the metal layer 120 and the insulating layer 121 may protrude compared to one end of the heat insulating layer 122. This allows the barrier member 12 to gradually dissipate the heat absorbed from the battery cell 11 through the protruding portion where the heat insulating layer 122 is not provided, thereby preventing a rapid temperature rise in the cell laminate 1.

[0074] A groove 311 for accommodating the protruding end of the barrier member 12 may be provided on the inner side of one side wall of the housing 3. Specifically, the one side wall may be the top plate 31. By accommodating the barrier member 12 in the groove 311, the free space is completely partitioned in the width direction, thereby more effectively blocking the propagation of gas and flames.

[0075] The groove 311 may be provided in the insulating cover 310. This can reduce the possibility of short circuits between the battery cells 11 via the metal layer 120.

[0076] [Heat propagation prevention effect of barrier material] The following section will describe in detail the effect of a barrier member according to one embodiment of the present invention in preventing heat transfer between cells under normal conditions and during cell ignition, with reference to Figures 13 to 15.

[0077] Figure 13 shows how a barrier member according to one embodiment of the present invention prevents heat propagation between cells. Referring to this, if one of the battery cells 11 ignites, the heat generated from that battery cell 11 is radiated and / or conducted to the other adjacent battery cells, which can cause a chain reaction of ignition and thermal runaway at the module level.

[0078] According to this embodiment, by including the metal layer 120 in the barrier member 12, when a local portion of the barrier member 12 is heated, the local temperature rise of the barrier member 12 is suppressed, and the heat can be dispersed throughout the entire barrier member 12.

[0079] In particular, when the metal layer 120 protrudes outward compared to the heat insulating layer 122, the barrier member 12 acts as a heat dissipation pin that gradually releases the heat absorbed from the battery cell 11, thereby preventing a rapid rise in the temperature of the cell laminate 1.

[0080] If the battery cell 11 ignites, high-temperature gas and flames may be ejected above the cell stack 1 where the sealing portion 111S is provided. These gases and flames may propagate to other battery cells through the free space between the cell stack 1 and the housing 3, potentially causing thermal runaway at the module level.

[0081] In this embodiment, the barrier member 12 may protrude outward compared to the battery cell 11 and extend into the inside of the housing 3, thereby isolating the free space between the cell stack 1 and the housing 3 in the width direction. This can block heat propagation between cells due to gas and flame convection through the free space.

[0082] If the insulating layer 121 has bending rigidity and heat resistance, the barrier member 12 can maintain a state of isolation of the free space without being deformed by high-temperature, high-pressure gas and flames.

[0083] Figures 14 and 15 show a battery cell igniting in a battery module according to one embodiment of the present invention. Referring to these drawings, if the battery cell 11 located on one side in the width direction of the barrier member 12 ignites, the heat-insulating layer 122 and / or the insulating layer 121 may melt due to the high heat. At this time, the metal layer 120 has a high melting point and may not melt even at high temperatures.

[0084] According to this embodiment, the insulating layer 121 and / or heat insulating layer 122 provided on the other side in the width direction of the barrier member 12 may not melt due to the heat dissipation effect of the metal layer 120. As a result, the barrier member 12 can prevent heat propagation by radiation, convection and / or conduction, and prevent short circuits between cells, while maintaining its structure against high-temperature, high-pressure gases and flames.

[0085] [Battery pack and automobile structure] In the following, with reference to Figures 16 and 17, a battery pack housing a battery module according to one embodiment of the present invention, and the structure of an automobile incorporating it will be described.

[0086] Figures 16 and 17 show, respectively, a battery pack containing a battery module according to one embodiment of the present invention, and the structure of an automobile incorporating the battery pack. Referring to these drawings, multiple battery modules (M) can be integrated to form a battery pack (P) in order to increase their capacity and / or voltage. The battery pack (P) may include a venting device that can discharge gases and flames to the outside in the event that the battery module (M) ignites. The battery pack (P) can be incorporated into an automobile (V) as a power source. The automobile (V) may include electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles, and the like.

Furthermore, the meaning and scope of the claims described below, as well as any modified and transformable forms conceived from their equivalent concepts, must all be interpreted as being included within the scope of the present invention.
