[0085] As shown in the referenced drawings, the same reference numerals may be used herein to represent the same parameters and components or similar modifications and substitutions thereof. For the purposes of the description herein, the terms "upper", "lower", "right", "left", "rear", "front", "vertical", "horizontal" and their derivatives shall be used in connection with the present disclosure, such as Figure 1 oriented therein. However, it should be understood that the present disclosure may adopt various alternative orientations unless expressly indicated to the contrary. It should also be understood that the specific devices and processes shown in the drawings and described in the following specification are merely exemplary embodiments of the inventive concepts defined in the appended claims. Therefore, unless the claims expressly state otherwise, specific dimensions and other physical characteristics associated with the embodiments disclosed herein should not be considered limiting. The drawings referenced herein are schematic and the related views thereof are not necessarily drawn to scale.
[0086] refer to Figure 1 , reference numeral 10 generally designates a motor vehicle console for a motor vehicle 2 having a body 4 and a passenger compartment 6. Within the passenger compartment 6, an instrument panel 8 is located in front of the driver and passenger seating positions (not shown), and the motor vehicle console 10 is mounted to a vehicle floor 12 of the motor vehicle 2 substantially along the centerline of the motor vehicle 2 and extending on the longitudinal axis of the motor vehicle 2. Depending on the functional and styling requirements of the motor vehicle 2, the vehicle floor 12 may have a raised central portion 14 on which the center console 10 is mounted, such as Figure 1 As shown, or a substantially flat vehicle floor 12 may be provided, such as Figure 2A shown.
[0087] As is well known, the instrument panel 8 may be equipped with various instruments and controls that may operate the motor vehicle 2, as well as a heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system 16 housed within the instrument panel 8. The HVAC system 16 is provided with an outlet duct 18, through which heated and cooled air flows from the HVAC system 16 are distributed to the passenger compartment 6. In addition, a data transmission network or power supply 20 may be mounted within the instrument panel 8, wherein an access socket 22 to the data transmission network or power supply 20 is provided on the instrument panel 8. Particularly advantageous access sockets 22 include USB charging ports, through which various digital devices such as cellular phones, tablet computers and laptop computers may be connected to the on-board data transmission network and / or power supply 20. As discussed further below, a hole 24 for the access socket 22 may be cut through the wall of the center console 10 by a laser cutting process, after which the access socket 22 may be sealed to the tubular member 28 by a gasket seal or a simple cap molding 26, such as Fig. 30C shown.
[0088] like Figure 1 As shown, typically, the console 10 can be centrally located between the driver and passenger seating positions for easy access by the driver or passenger. Also, typically, the console 10 can be mounted to the floor pan 12 of the motor vehicle 2. However, the console 10 according to the present disclosure provides significant improvements, as described more fully below.
[0089] Referring to the drawings, the console 10 according to the present disclosure includes a pair of exposed parallel tubular members 28, 30 extending along the longitudinal axis of the motor vehicle 2 and arranged substantially parallel to each other laterally separated, preferably separated by a distance of about 300mm to 400mm. Each tubular member 28, 30 has a connector section 32, a forward horizontal section 34, an intermediate section 36 extending rearwardly in an at least partially upward direction, and a rearward horizontal section 38.
[0090] The first front end 40 of the connector section 32 is preferably operably coupled to the outlet duct 18 of the instrument panel 8 and extends rearwardly in at least a downward direction. The outlet duct 18 of the instrument panel 8 is preferably operably coupled to the lower portion 42 of the instrument panel 8, such as Figure 2B As shown. Fig.19 and Fig.31 As best shown in FIG. 1 , the rear end 44 of the connector section 32 is operably coupled to the front end 46 of the forward horizontal section 34. The engagement of the instrument panel 8 and the connector section 32 is preferably achieved by a reduced diameter portion of the instrument panel outlet duct 18 being received within the first front end 40 of the connector section 32 and a chrome plated or anodized cross screw 48 extending through the reduced diameter portion and the first front end, as shown in FIG. Figure 2A and 2BPreferably, the resulting structure distributes the load from the weight of the instrument panel 8 over a large area of the vehicle floor pan 12 via the tubular members 28 , 30 .
[0091] As shown, each forward horizontal section 34 of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 is disposed at a height horizontally below the rearward horizontal section 38. Preferably, each forward horizontal section 34 is also operably coupled to a mounting member 50 that is operably coupled to the floor pan 12 of the motor vehicle 2. The rear end 52 of the forward horizontal section 34 is operably coupled to the front end 54 of the middle section 36, and the rear end 56 of the middle section 36 is operably coupled to the front end 58 of the rearward horizontal section 38, as shown in FIG. Fig.19 and Fig.31 Preferably, the connector section 32 extends rearwardly and downwardly at an angle of approximately 45 degrees relative to the horizontal plane, and the intermediate section 36 extends rearwardly and upwardly at an angle of approximately 45 degrees relative to the horizontal plane, as shown in FIG. Fig.19 and Fig.31 shown.
[0092] The mounting member 50 may be operably coupled to the vehicle floor panel 12 by a fastener, clamp or other device 60 that provides a secure mechanical attachment, such as Figure 8B As shown, the mounting member 50 extends transversely relative to the longitudinal axis of the motor vehicle 2, and (as shown in FIG. Fig. 8A 2 (best shown in FIG. 2 ) includes a substantially flat and elongated lower base 62 and a pair of semi-annular collars 64 operably coupled to the lower base 62 and proximate opposite ends 66, 68 of the lower base 62. Thus, a pair of openings 70 aligned with the longitudinal axis of the motor vehicle 2 are defined by the mount 50, and the forward horizontal section 34 of each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 may be received and restrained within the pair of openings 70, respectively.
[0093] The lower base 62 and the pair of semi-annular collars 64 are preferably injection molded as a single integral component overmolded around the forward horizontal section 34 of each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30, respectively. Fig.37 As shown, the pair of tubular members 28, 30 can be inserted into a mold 72, and the polymer material for the mounting member 50 (preferably a glass fiber filled or carbon fiber filled thermoplastic) is injected into the cavity 74 for the mounting member. The pair of tubular members 28, 30 can then be removed as an assembly, wherein the mounting member 50 completely surrounds the outer periphery 76 of each forward horizontal segment 34 of the pair of tubular members 28, 30, as shown in FIG. Fig. 8AAdditionally, the outer periphery 76 of the forward horizontal section 34 of the tubular members 28, 30 surrounded by the overmolded mount 50 may be provided with protrusions 78 or the like that surround and are captured by the molding material to provide structural stability to the junction of the forward horizontal section 34 and the base 50.
[0094] Alternatively, if Figure 8B As shown, the mount 50 may include a separate component and may include a lower base 62 having a pair of opposite ends 66, 68 via which the mount 50 may be attached to the vehicle floor 12 by fasteners 60. The mount 50 may also include discrete semi-annular collars 64 that are operably coupled to the lower base 62 and surround the outer periphery 76 of the forward horizontal section 34 of each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30, respectively. The semi-annular collars 64 may be attached to the lower base 62 by fasteners 80, whereby a spacer 82 may be sandwiched between the lower base 62 and the semi-annular collars 64 to receive and restrain the forward horizontal section 34 of the tubular members 28, 30. In the foregoing configuration, a pair of mounts 50 may be arranged in a lateral left-right orientation to receive and restrain each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30.
[0095] In either case, as shown, a pair of mounting members 50 may preferably be provided, wherein each mounting member 50 extends transversely relative to the motor vehicle and is longitudinally spaced from each other. It has been found that the use of a pair of mounting members 50 tends to minimize rotation of the console 10 relative to the vertical axis of the motor vehicle 2. In addition, as shown in FIG. Fig. 9 and Fig.10 As shown, the shifter assembly 84 may be mounted to the mount 50 between the pair of tubular members 28 , 30 .
[0096] Each tubular member 28, 30 is preferably formed as a continuous hollow metal tube, which is bent to form the above-mentioned sections. Therefore, the connector section 32, the forward horizontal section 34, the middle section 36 and the rearward horizontal section 38 of each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 form a substantially continuous and integral internal cavity 86 extending longitudinally relative to the motor vehicle 2. The preferred material for each tubular member 28, 30 is steel (which is relatively cheap, rigid, and can be easily painted with various colors and finishes to match or complement the interior of the passenger compartment 6. When the tubular members 28, 30 are made of steel, they can also be electro-painted to produce a high-quality finish. However, aluminum can also be used as the material of the tubular members 28, 30, although aluminum, although lighter in weight, tends to be more expensive and difficult to form. The tubular members 28, 30 made of aluminum can also be painted or anodized by electro-coating to produce a high-quality finish. In either case, the tubular members 28, 30 can be formed by a hydroforming process or a CNC process, as known. The tubular members 28, 30 may also be constructed from individual sections assembled to one another, as long as the above-mentioned continuous hollow configuration is obtained.
[0097] The tubular members 28, 30 are preferably formed to have a circular cross-sectional configuration, and each preferably has an outer diameter of about 40 mm to 60 mm. When the tubular members 28, 30 are made of steel, each tubular member 28, 30 preferably has a wall thickness of about 1.5 mm, which extends substantially over the entire longitudinal length of each tubular member 28, 30.
[0098] As described with respect to the above-described embodiments, each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 may be independently supported and restrained by the mounting member 50. However, it is contemplated that additional embodiments may be employed whereby each rearward horizontal segment 38 of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 may be operably coupled to one another at the distal end 88 of each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 to provide further structural rigidity and the opportunity for additional features, as described below. In particular, as Figures 24 to 36 , Figures 38 to 44 As shown, the pair of tubular members 28 , 30 may be coupled at distal ends 88 by a cross member 90 .
[0099] The cross member 90 may be integrally formed with the distal end 88 of each tubular member 28, 30 to effectively form a continuous tube, e.g. Fig.24 Alternatively, for example, the cross member 90 may be formed as a separate component, such as Fig.35 and Fig.36 Preferably, the tubular members 28, 30 and cross member 90 are rigid enough and strong enough to allow anyone standing on the cross member 90 to access the roof of the vehicle, such as through a sunroof.
[0100] Where the cross member 90 is a separate component, each distal end 88 of the rearward horizontal section 38 of the tubular members 28, 30 preferably slidably receives one of a pair of forwardly extending tubular members 92 of the cross member 90, which is preferably U-shaped, such as Fig.35 and Fig.36 . Preferably, the cross member 90 is movable along the longitudinal axis of the motor vehicle relative to the distal end 88 of each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 between a fully forward position and a fully rearward position. A release button 94 is preferably provided in conjunction with a detent mechanism (not shown) to secure the cross member 90 in a plurality of longitudinal positions between and including the fully forward position and the fully rearward position. As another example, the cross member 90 may be a polymer component that is injection molded between each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 during the process of injection molding the mount 50, as described above.
[0101] In each case, the cross member 90 preferably forms part of a substantially continuous and integral interior cavity 86 within the console. That is, the connector section 32, forward horizontal section 34, intermediate section 36, and rearward horizontal section 38 of each of the pair of exposed parallel tubular members 28, 30 form a substantially continuous and integral interior cavity 86 with the cross member 90. Thus, the cross member 90 can be selectively extended rearward to protrude further toward the rear seat position. An additional feature of the selectable position of the cross member 90 is that the natural armrest formed by the rearward horizontal section 38 of the tubular members 28, 30 can be effectively extended when the cross member 90 is extended toward the fully rearward position.
[0102] As a particularly advantageous feature of the present disclosure, the cross member 90 may include a rearwardly facing outer surface 96 and a head impact bezel 98 disposed in and attached to an opening 100, the opening 100 being laser cut into the rearwardly facing outer surface 96 of the cross member 90, as shown. Fig.29 , Fig. 30A and Fig. 30BAs shown. The head impact seat 98 may include a seat back plate 102, which is composed of injection molded polycarbonate (PC), thermoplastic olefin (TPO), polypropylene (PP), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) or polybutylene succinate (PBS). Preferably, the seat back plate 102 is provided with a plurality of horizontally oriented stress concentrators 104 (or grooves) vertically arranged thereon to control the breaking point of the head impact frame 98 during an impact. An exposed surface 106 of a softer material (such as an elastic polyurethane) preferably forms the rearward-facing outer surface 96 of the head impact seat 98 and a soft material contact point for the console 10. Alternatively, the head impact seat 98 may be made of thin steel (i.e., 0.5 mm thick) to replace the metal section of the cross member 90 covered by the head impact frame 98.
[0103] As an additional embodiment according to the present disclosure, the interior cavity 86 of the console 10 may also be used as a plenum for the HVAC system 16 of the motor vehicle 2. As described above, each connector section 32 is preferably operably coupled to the outlet duct 18 of the instrument panel 8 at the first front end 40, and the rear end 44 of the connector section 32 is operably coupled to the front end 46 of the forward horizontal section 34, as shown in FIG. Figure 2A Thus, the connector section 32, the forward horizontal section 34, the intermediate section 36, and the rearward horizontal section 38 of each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 form a substantially continuous and unitary interior cavity 86 extending longitudinally relative to the motor vehicle 2, the interior cavity 86 being in fluid communication with the HVAC system 16 and serving as a plenum for the HVAC system 16. In addition, the console 10 further includes one or more airflow vents 108 in fluid communication with the interior cavity 86 of the console 10.
[0104] like Fig. 9 , Fig.10 , Fig.12 , Fig.14 , Fig.15 , Figures 17 to 19 and Figure 45 to Figure 47 As shown, an airflow vent 108 may be provided at the distal end 88 of each rearward horizontal section 38, which may also be provided with a plastic or steel cap 110 to form the airflow vent 108. The airflow vent cap 110 may include a collar sized to fit within or around the distal end 88 of each rearward horizontal section 38 (depending on the styling dictates of the passenger compartment 6), and the collar is preferably provided with a register deflection mechanism 112 by which the direction of airflow from the airflow vent 108 may be adjusted, as is known.
[0105] In an alternative embodiment employing a cross member 90, wherein each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 is operably coupled to one another by the cross member 90 at the distal end 88 of each rearward horizontal segment 38 of the pair of tubular members 28, 30, the airflow vents 108 may be disposed on the cross member 90, for example, as Fig.42 and Fig.44 Alternatively, the airflow vents 108 may be disposed at each of a pair of corners 114 formed by the distal end 88 of the rearward horizontal section 38 and the cross member 90, for example, as Fig.24 Preferably, the airflow vents 108 are laser cut into the metal of the tubular members 28, 30 and / or the cross member 90 of the console 10 in any pattern suitable for the interior design of the passenger compartment 6. For example, Fig.24 and Fig.35 As shown, a pattern of parallel horizontal openings of varying lengths is employed. Thus, heated or cooled air may be directed from the HVAC system 16 housed in the instrument panel 8 and delivered to the rear seating positions.
[0106] As an additional feature of the present disclosure, the rearward horizontal section 38 of the tubular members 28, 30 may be provided with a perforated upper portion 116 defined by a plurality of openings 118 in fluid communication with the interior cavity 86 of the tubular members 28, 30 through which air may flow to the elbows of a driver and / or passenger of the motor vehicle 2 resting on the rearward horizontal section 38, for example. Figure 5 , Figure 6 , Figure 7 , Fig.35 and Fig.36 As shown. Openings (not shown) may also be provided on the sides of the rearward horizontal section 38 to direct airflow to the sides of the driver and / or passenger. Furthermore, where the upper portion 116 of the rearward horizontal section 38 of the tubular members 28, 30 includes an elbow pad 120 disposed thereon, as discussed further below, the elbow pad 120 may be cooled or heated by heat conduction through the tubular members 28, 30 caused by air flowing through the tubular members 28, 30, thereby providing increased comfort for the driver and / or passenger of the motor vehicle 2. Additionally, airflow vents 108 may be provided through the elbow pad 120 to provide heated or cooled airflow to the elbows of the driver and / or passenger, as described above. Figure 7 shown.
[0107] Additionally, it is contemplated that the elbow pad 120 may be mounted to the rearward horizontal section 38 of the tubular members 28, 30 to extend only partially around the outer periphery 76 of the rearward horizontal section 38 and may be mounted to facilitate axial rotation about the outer periphery 76 of the rearward horizontal section 38. The airflow vents 108, including a series of small openings, may be disposed in a plurality of radial directions around the outer periphery 76 of the rearward horizontal section 38, whereby axial rotation of the elbow pad 120 about the outer periphery 76 of the rearward horizontal section 38 may be used to open or close the airflow vents 108 or the series of small openings disposed about the outer periphery 76 of the rearward horizontal section 38 to selectively control the direction of heated or cooled airflow from the rearward horizontal section 38 of the tubular members 28, 30.
[0108] In other embodiments, the storage box 122 may be disposed proximate to at least one of the pair of tubular members 28, 30, and the pair of tubular members 28, 30 may include an airflow vent 108 in fluid communication with the interior 124 of the storage box 122. Even more preferably, the storage box 122 is disposed transversely between the pair of tubular members 28, 30, and each rearward horizontal segment 38 of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 further includes an airflow vent 108 in fluid communication with the interior 124 of the storage box 122, as shown in FIG. Fig.23A In this embodiment, the airflow vent 108 in fluid communication with the interior 124 of the storage box 122 preferably also includes a slidable closure 126 that is mounted within the slot 128 and can be moved in an open position (e.g., Fig. 23B as shown) and the closed position (as Fig.23C 108) to selectively open and close the airflow vents 108. Thus, heated or cooled air can be directed from the HVAC system 16 housed in the instrument panel 8 and delivered to the interior 124 of the storage box 122. In fact, and as a particularly advantageous feature, the HVAC system 16 can be combined with the storage box 122 to act as a refrigerator to some extent and cool the objects contained therein.
[0109] As another embodiment according to the present disclosure, the console 10 can also be used as a distribution platform for the data transmission network or power supply 20 of the motor vehicle 2 housed in the dashboard 8. In this embodiment, the connector section 32 is operably connected to the data transmission network or power supply 20, and the connector section 32, the forward horizontal section 34, the middle section 36 and the rearward horizontal section 38 of each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 form a substantially continuous and integral internal cavity 86 extending longitudinally relative to the motor vehicle 2, through which the main data transmission network or power supply line or bus 130 operably connected to the data transmission network or power supply 20 is disposed, as shown in FIG. Fig.31One or more access sockets 22 electrically connected to a main data transmission network or power line 130 may be provided on the pair of tubular members 28,30.
[0110] Preferably, a seal 132 is disposed between the connector section 32 and the dashboard outlet duct 18 operably coupled to the connector section 32 at the first front end 40 of the connector section 32 to seal the entry of the data transmission line or power line 130 extending into the interior cavity 86, as shown in FIG. Fig.31 and Fig.32 Thus, particularly when mounted on a utility vehicle that may encounter water operations, the motor vehicle 2 and the console 10 may be submerged to a depth beyond the coupling of the connector section 32 to the instrument panel 8 without allowing water to enter the interior cavity 86 of the console 10. In this regard, each forwardly extending tubular member 92 of the slidable cross member 90 is preferably provided with an O-ring 134 disposed between the forwardly extending tubular member 92 of the cross member 90 and the rearwardly facing horizontal section 38 of the tubular members 28, 30 to prevent water from entering the interior cavity 86 of the console 10, as shown in FIG. Fig.36 shown.
[0111] like Fig.46A and Fig.47 As shown, the access socket 22 can be disposed proximate the distal end 88 of each rearward horizontal section 38. In an alternative embodiment employing a cross member 90, wherein each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 is operably coupled to one another by the cross member 90 at the distal end 88 of each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30, the access socket 22 can be disposed on the cross member 90, as shown in FIG. Fig.29 , Fig. 30A and Fig. 30C shown.
[0112] As discussed further below, an accessory 150 may be mounted to the pair of tubular members 28, 30, and an access jack 22 to a data transmission network or power source 20 may be provided on the accessory 150, such as Fig.12 , Fig.14 , Fig.16 , Fig.18 , Fig. 20 , Fig.21 , Fig.33 , Fig.34 , Fig.40A , Fig.40B , Fig.46A and Fig.47A particularly advantageous feature of the console 10 of the present disclosure is the ability to employ a modular design in order to obtain a customizable console 10 adapted to the needs of a driver or passenger of the motor vehicle 2. To this end, one or more accessories 150 may be provided at various locations on the pair of tubular members 28, 30 of the console 10, wherein the accessories 150 may be fixedly or removably mounted to the pair of tubular members 28, 30.
[0113] For example, Figure 5 , Figure 6 , Figure 7 , Fig.12 , Fig.14 , Fig.15 , Fig.18 and Fig.19 As shown, the accessory 150 may include an elbow pad 120 disposed on the upper portion 116 of each rearward horizontal section 38 of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 to form an armrest. Preferably, the elbow pad 120 disposed on the upper portion 116 of each rearward horizontal section 38 of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 includes an injection molded polymer (preferably an elastic polyurethane) overmolded to the rearward horizontal section 38 of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 to form a cost-effective elbow pad 120. As described above, the injection molding process can occur during the injection molding of the mounting member 50. Alternatively, the elbow pad 120 may include an overmolded gel-type polymer as a separate molding step. It should also be noted that overmolding can be used in other key areas to create additional features beyond a simple elbow pad 120, and modular accessory attachment features and soft touch points can be provided throughout the length of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 and across the width of the cross member 90.
[0114] As shown in the various figures, the accessories 150 may also include a touch screen module 152, a closable box 154, a tray assembly 156, a cup holder assembly 158, a tablet device clamp assembly 160, a sling 162, a storage box 122, and a shallow box 166. As described below, various accessories 150 may also be incorporated into the cross member 90. Preferably, each accessory 150 is manufactured as a polymer injection molded body, except as otherwise described herein, with one of a plurality of removable clamps 170 on each corner thereof. Except as otherwise described herein, the accessories 150 are preferably made of injection molded polycarbonate (PC), thermoplastic olefin (TPO), polypropylene (PP), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), or polybutylene succinate (PBS). In addition, it is contemplated that the accessories 150 can be molded in a variety of colors and finishes to match or complement the interior of the passenger compartment 6.
[0115] Additionally, as described above, the pair of tubular members 28, 30 preferably have a substantially circular cross-sectional outer perimeter and a substantially continuous diameter along their longitudinal length. Fig. 11C and Fig.11D As shown, each removable clamp 170 may have a substantially semicircular groove 172 having an inner perimeter 174 and an opening width W that is less than the diameter of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 received therein. Preferably, the opening width W is defined by a pair of resilient and flexible opposing edges 176, thereby allowing one of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 to be properly received within the semicircular groove 172 of the removable clamp 170. As an alternative embodiment, in the case where the pair of tubular members 28, 30 are made of steel, the removable clamp 170 may be omitted, and each accessory 150 may be provided with one or more magnets 168, by which the accessory 150 may be removably connected to the pair of tubular members 28, 30 of the console 10.
[0116] Furthermore, accessories 150 formed as touch screen modules 152, closable boxes 154, tray assemblies 156, cup holder assemblies 158, tablet device clamp assemblies 160, storage boxes 122, or shallow boxes 166 may also be provided with access sockets 22. Thus, to facilitate the interchangeability of accessories 150 as described herein, one or both of the tubular members 28, 30 may have access sockets 22 provided along the length of each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30, into which leads 178 may enter from the accessory 150, and on the accessory 150 itself may be provided access sockets 22 that may be electrically connected to the data transmission network or power supply 20 of the motor vehicle 2. Preferably, access sockets 22 are provided at least on the connector section 32 and the intermediate section 36 of each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30. The access sockets 22 are in turn in electrical communication with the main data transmission network or power supply 20.
[0117] In one embodiment, a number of accessories 150 may be removably and interchangeably mounted to either the connector section 32 or the intermediate section 36 of each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30. For example, the touch screen module 152, the closable bin 154, the cup holder assembly 158, and the tablet device clamp assembly 160 may be advantageously interchanged to a forward or rearward orientation, as driven by the needs of the motor vehicle driver or passenger.
[0118] The touch screen module 152 preferably includes an interactive electronic device through which information can be displayed and input can be provided to the electronic device. In particular, Fig.38 and Fig.39 As shown, it is contemplated that the touch screen module 152 may be used to control and display the status of various motor vehicle systems and data transmission networks, control and display of a vehicle entertainment system, and control and display of a vehicle navigation system.
[0119] like Figure 5 , Figure 6 , Fig.12 , Figure 20 to Figure 22 , Fig.33 , Fig.34 , Fig.38 , Fig.40A and Fig.40B The illustrated closeable box 154 is generally envisioned to include a closed body 180 within which is mounted a hinged box 182 having an upper opening 184 leading to an interior 186 of the hinged box 182. The hinged box 182 preferably rotates between an open position exposing the interior 186 of the hinged box 182 and a closed position in which a front guard 188 is flush with a front surface 190 of the body 180. Items placed inside the box are thereby secured.
[0120] like Figure 4 , Fig. 9 , Fig.10 , Fig.14 , Fig.15 , Fig.18 , Fig.19 , Fig. 20 , Fig.21 , Fig. 22 , Fig.24 , FIG. 41A to FIG. 41B and Fig.42 The illustrated cup holder assembly 158 may include a body 180 having a pair of side-by-side vertically oriented cylindrical recesses 192 disposed on an upper surface 196 thereof. The body 180 may be limited to a Fig. 22 and Fig.24 A simple frame, or housing, is shown supporting a cylindrical recess 192 that includes a closeable box 154, a smaller recess 194 for small loose items (such as loose coins), and an access port 22, such as Fig. 20 and Fig.21 The cup holder assembly 158 may also be integrated into the cross member 90, as shown. Fig.42 The cylindrical recess 192 is preferably sized to receive a commonly sized beverage container.
[0121] In another embodiment, the attachment 150 may be removably mounted to the forward horizontal section 34 of each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30. For example, Fig. 11B , Fig.12 , Figures 14 to 21 , Fig.33 , Fig.34 , Fig.40A and Fig.40B As shown, the tray assembly 156 can be mounted so that the upper surface 196 of the tray assembly 156 is flush with the horizontal plane. The tray assembly 156 preferably includes a substantially flat rectangular structure with a shallow recess 198 disposed therein. Fig.40A and Fig.40B As further shown in FIG. 1 , the tray assembly 156 may be provided with a cutout 200 on the bottom 202, and the pair of mounting members 50 are received in the cutout 200 so that the tray assembly 156 may be mounted substantially flush with the floor of the motor vehicle. Alternatively, as Figures 13 to 19 As shown, the tray assembly 156 may be provided with a pair of connecting ears 204 extending outwardly along each side, which can be connected to the opposite ends 66, 68 of the mounting member 50, for example, by fasteners 206 extending through the connecting ears 204 on the tray assembly 156 and into the opposite ends 66, 68 on the mounting member 50.
[0122] like Figures 12 to 21 , Fig.41A , Fig.41B , Fig.43 and Fig.44 The illustrated tablet device clamp assembly 160 preferably includes a base 210 to which a support frame 212 may be movably attached, preferably by a ball and socket mount (not shown), so as to allow the support frame 212 to rotate left to right, move up and down, and rotate 360° relative to the base 210. The support frame 212 is also preferably provided with a plurality of resilient clips 214 arranged around its outer periphery 216, within which a tablet device (not shown) may be received and removably supported by the plurality of resilient clips 214.
[0123] Additionally, a bridge module 220 (which may include a separate closable storage compartment 222 having a closable lid 224, an open bottom 226, a cup holder circular recess 192, and a small rectangular recess 194 for temporarily storing smaller items) may be selectively attached to the pair of tubular members 28, 30 so as to be mounted directly above and in contact with the tray assembly 156, such as FIG. 11A to FIG. 11D Preferably, the interior dimensions of the closable storage compartment 222 of the bridge module 220 correspond to the interior dimensions of the shallow recess 198 on the upper surface 196 of the tray assembly 156 to form a substantially continuous interior cavity 228 .
[0124] In yet other embodiments, a number of accessories 150 may be removably and interchangeably mounted to the rearward horizontal section 38 of each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30. For example, the sling 162, storage bin 122, and shallow box 166 may be attached to and suspended from the rearward horizontal section 38. Each of the sling 162, storage bin 122, or shallow box 166 may include a C-clip 230 that engages the outer periphery 76 of the rearward horizontal section 38, the C-clip 230 extending along each of a pair of opposing longitudinal sides of the sling 162, storage bin 122, or shallow box 166, for example, as shown in FIG. Figure 2CThere, a C-clip 230 is preferably shown disposed about the rearward horizontal section 38 of one of the pair of tubular members 28, 30. The elbow pad 120 may be provided to form an exposed upper surface 232 of the C-clip 230.
[0125] In particular, in the case of the sling 162, the C-clip 230 may preferably include a leather exposed upper surface 232 and an inner rigid polymer clip 234 with polyurethane foam disposed therebetween. Figure 2A , Fig. 9 and Fig.10 As shown, the strap 162 can be made of a continuous length of leather, cloth, canvas or similar flexible material, which extends downward from each rearward horizontal section 38 of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 and extends laterally between each rearward horizontal section 38 of the pair of tubular members 28, 30.
[0126] like Fig.40A and Fig.40B As shown, the storage box 122 can be provided in different lengths. In the embodiment shown, the longer storage box 122 is preferably about 150 mm longer than the shorter storage box. In the case where the storage box 122 forms an open compartment, it is also possible to Fig.40A and Fig.40B As shown, the longitudinal sides may be formed of a gel-type polymer to provide support as an elbow pad 120. In addition, as described above, the storage box may be provided with a closable lid 250 and heated or cooled. In addition, by using the closable lid 250 and a seal 252 around the opening of the interior of the storage box 122, the storage box may be made waterproof. Finally, by using the closable lid 250 and the lock 254, the storage box may be used to protect valuable items, such as Fig.34 As shown. When used as a device that can protect valuables, the storage box 122 and the closable cover 250 are preferably constructed of carbon fiber polymer. As an additional advantageous feature of the storage box 122, when a closable cover 250 is provided, the closable cover 250 can have a padded upper exposed surface to serve as an armrest when in the closed position. Likewise, the upper surface 196 can be padded with a gel-type polymer to provide support as an armrest.
[0127] like Figure 45 to Figure 47 As shown, the shallow box 166 can be formed into a substantially flat body 260 with a shallow longitudinal groove 262 disposed therein. Preferably, the C-clip 230 extends laterally from either longitudinal side along the length of the shallow box 166. The shallow box 166 can also be provided with the elbow pad 120 on an exposed upper surface 264, which, as previously described, is preferably formed of a resilient polyurethane material or a gel-type material. Figure 45 to Figure 47The shallow box 166 disclosed therein is adapted to be mounted to the distal end 88 of the rearward horizontal section 38 of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 in the absence of the cross member 90, and preferably also includes a rear airflow vent 108 having a register deflection mechanism 112 for providing heated or cooled airflow to the rear seating positions.
[0128] As an additional feature of the present disclosure, a number of attachments 150 may be incorporated into or fabricated to be slidably received within the cross member 90 within the distal end 88 of each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30, wherein the attachments 150 may be adapted to move longitudinally relative to the distal end 88 of each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30. FIG. 41A to FIG. 44 As best shown in the drawings, for example, the cup holder assembly 158 or the tablet device clamp assembly 160 can be configured to form or be attachable to a cross member 90 that is slidably received within the distal end 88 of each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30. A pair of parallel tubular members 92 preferably extend forward of the cup holder assembly 158 or the tablet device clamp assembly 160 and are slidably received within the distal ends 88 of the rearward horizontal sections 38 of the pair of tubular members 28, 30.
[0129] In the case of the tablet device clamp assembly 160, the tablet device clamp assembly 160 can be removed from the cross member 90 before the cross member 90 is fully slid to its forward position, such as Fig.41A In the case of an embodiment where the accessory 150 is incorporated into the cross member 90, the cross member 90 is preferably provided with an access jack 22 to a data transmission network or power source 20. This is particularly true where the accessory 150 includes a tablet device clamp assembly 160, but is also applicable when the accessory 150 includes a cup holder assembly 158, such as Fig.42 and Fig.44 shown.
[0130] According to the present disclosure, a high level of modularity can be achieved in the design and layout of the console 10. For example, the cup holder assembly 158 can be moved from a forward position to a rearward position to accommodate the shifter assembly 84 mounted to the overmolded mount 50. In addition, the tablet device clamp assembly 160 can be removed from the connector section 32, such as Fig.12 As shown, and replaced by a touch screen module 152, such as Fig.38 As shown, Fig.14 The cup holder assembly 158 shown mounted to the intermediate section 36 may be used as shown. Figure 33 to Figure 34The console 10 is replaced with the closable box 154 shown. Thus, the present disclosure provides a very high level of interchangeability and customer customization. The interchangeability of the various accessories 150 can be obtained directly by the driver or passenger of the motor vehicle 2, or can be modified at a dealer. In the former case, the motor vehicle owner can essentially custom build the console 10 to meet the owner's specific needs.
