Description

Technical Field

[0001] The present invention generally relates to pyrotechnic devices, such as pyrotechnic switches, intended to be mounted to a motor vehicle. Background Art

[0002] Pyrotechnic devices forming switches (to open or close an electric circuit of a motor vehicle, such as a high-power circuit) are known from the prior art, the pyrotechnic devices having a housing, for example, made of a plastic material. Such devices are disclosed, for example, in document FR3017240. However, such housings made of plastic material may bring limitations or constraints in terms of geometry and / or mechanical strength. In practice, it may be difficult to provide complex shapes, because such complex shapes are not easily manufactured by injection molding processes. Document EP0936648A2 discloses a pyrotechnic switch having a metal housing, a housing body made of a synthetic resin, and a coating made of a synthetic resin. Document EP0929090A2 discloses a pyrotechnic circuit breaker having a support bracket riveted to a housing portion.

[0003] Furthermore, due to the internal pressure, it is also necessary to provide a high-strength plastic material, which may, for example, cause problems with regard to injection into a mold having a complex shape. In practice, the conditions for injecting plastic materials differ from one another, resulting in specific injection restrictions. Furthermore, a plastic raw material that is mechanically stronger than a second plastic material does not necessarily enable a shape that is easier to produce with the second plastic material to be obtained. Summary of the invention

[0004] An object of the present invention is to address the drawbacks of the above-mentioned prior art documents and, in particular, to propose for the first time a pyrotechnic device, such as a pyrotechnic switch or contactor, having a housing made of a strong plastic material, responsive to the limitations associated with managing currents, while having a complex shape or geometry.

[0005] To this end, a first aspect of the present invention relates to a pyrotechnic switch, the pyrotechnic switch comprising:

[0006] - a housing, the housing being formed by assembling a first housing part and a second housing part;

[0007] - at least one pyrotechnic actuator, the at least one pyrotechnic actuator being arranged in the housing;

[0008] wherein at least one of the first housing portion or the second housing portion comprises a metal reinforcement and a plastic body overmolded onto the metal reinforcement,

[0009] Characterized in that the plastic body comprises:

[0010] - a first part, the first part being made of a first plastic material,

[0011] - A second part made of a second plastic material.

[0012] The switch according to the above-described embodiment comprises at least one bi-material plastic housing part, which makes it possible to combine the advantages of each material to manufacture a housing or housing part that can provide good mechanical strength and / or electrical strength in areas exposed to high forces or mechanical stresses and in areas with complex and precise geometries (where precision is required, for example due to assembly or attachment to surrounding parts). The use of several plastic materials makes it possible to produce the housing part in several injections. This makes it possible to use smaller presses and be more flexible in order to adapt to the needs of the customer when the housing includes a connection interface that the customer wishes to personalize. Finally, when the housing includes a pyrotechnic actuator, this makes it possible to inject the housing at different suppliers; this can prove useful because specific safety permits may be required to operate the pyrotechnic actuator. Overmolding the plastic body onto the metal reinforcement: This involves melting or molding a part (in this case the plastic body) onto another already existing part (the metal reinforcement). The present invention therefore relates to a plastic body obtained by an operation for molding a plastic material in liquid form in a mold, on or around a metal reinforcement pre-positioned in the mold. Typically, overmolding is performed by pressurized injection.

[0013] More generally, the present invention relates to a pyrotechnic device forming a switch and / or a contactor and comprising:

[0014] - a housing, the housing being formed by assembling a first housing part and a second housing part;

[0015] - at least one pyrotechnic actuator, the at least one pyrotechnic actuator being arranged in the housing;

[0016] wherein at least one of the first housing portion or the second housing portion comprises a metal reinforcement and a plastic body overmolded onto the metal reinforcement,

[0017] Characterized in that the plastic body comprises:

[0018] - a first part, the first part being made of a first plastic material,

[0019] - A second part made of a second plastic material.

[0020] At least one housing part of the pyrotechnic device (switch) consists of a metal reinforcement and two parts made of different plastic materials. This makes it possible to choose a material that is suitable for the local function and geometry of each area of the housing part under consideration.

[0021] Advantageously, the switch comprises a boundary arranged between the first part and the second part. A boundary as used herein refers to an interface, a joining area, a connecting area, a molding limit or an interface where the first material and the second material are joined. Positioning this boundary at a shoulder acting as a reinforcement makes it possible to limit the risk of material separation by providing a planar area for closing the injection molding mold, while facilitating the molding operation.

[0022] Advantageously, the first plastic material and the second plastic material are interconnected at a border. The interconnection of the two plastic materials makes it possible to limit openings that may occur at the border due to differential expansion of the two materials. The interconnection may occur due to a complementary nesting shape of the first plastic material in the second plastic material. Typically, the complementary shape may have an undercut shape, for example with a dovetail shape along the border.

[0023] Advantageously, the first plastic material covers at least a portion of the second plastic material. The covering prevents the reinforcement from being exposed in the event of differential expansion of the plastic materials. When there is no interconnection between the two plastic materials, deformation of one plastic material does not lead to deformation of the other plastic material.

[0024] Advantageously, one of the first or second parts has at least one contact surface with a continuous perimeter at a boundary to provide continuous contact for a mold used to manufacture the other of the first or second parts. Such a continuous perimeter (without recesses or leakage paths) makes it possible to provide a sealed docking interface for a manufacturing mold that is provided for a subsequent molding step.

[0025] In other words, the present invention proposes a process for manufacturing a dual-material pyrotechnic switch by the following steps:

[0026] A first step of injection molding the first part with plastic material in order to produce at least one continuous contact surface, and a second step of injection molding, which includes a stage of docking the manufacturing mold on at least one contact surface and maintaining this contact to ensure that there is no leakage during the second molding step. This makes it possible to simplify the manufacturing operations and processing.

[0027] Specifically, the outer surface of the first portion is flush with, aligned with, or at the same height as the outer surface of the second portion at the boundary.

[0028] Advantageously, the two outer surfaces of the first part are flush or aligned or at the same height with the two outer surfaces of the second part at the boundary, and the two surfaces of the two parts are located on either side of the metal reinforcement. In other words, on either side of the boundary, the surfaces are continuously at the same height.

[0029] Advantageously, the metal reinforcement is overmolded on both sides and the boundary between the first portion and the second portion arranged on one side of the metal reinforcement is offset relative to the boundary between the first portion and the second portion arranged on the other side of the metal reinforcement. In other words, there is an offset in the boundary between the two sides of the metal reinforcement in order to further strengthen the assembly, in particular against bending, and to limit the risk of delamination.

[0030] Advantageously, the metal reinforcement is overmolded on both sides with the first material and / or the second material.

[0031] Advantageously, the boundary between the first portion and the second portion is a region where the first plastic material joins to the second plastic material.

[0032] Advantageously, the pyrotechnic switch comprises a movable part housed in a guiding interface formed in one of the first part or the second part, and wherein the boundary between the first part and the second part is discrete and / or separate from the guiding part. Such separation makes it possible to ensure correct guiding (thus always on the same continuous material) and prevents any damage to the joint between the materials caused by the movable part.

[0033] Advantageously, the first portion has an inner wall arranged to be exposed or located near the arc during operation of the pyrotechnic actuator, and a portion of the first plastic material is arranged to be removed by ablation. The first plastic material exposed to the arc or arranged near the arc may be at least partially eroded or removed by ablation of the atmosphere and / or the arc, which increases the arc voltage and helps to remove or limit the arc.

[0034] Advantageously, the first plastic material is selected from polyphthalamide (PPA), polyoxymethylene (POM) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA).

[0035] Advantageously, the second part comprises a connection interface arranged to receive an electrical connector intended to connect the pyrotechnic actuator to a control circuit.

[0036] Advantageously, the second plastic material is selected from polyamides (PA, PA6, PA6-12, PA6-6) and contains between 10% and 50% by weight of reinforcing fibers, for example made of glass. Such materials (polyamides, also known as nylons) are very suitable for producing by molding the typical complex shapes of connection interfaces, where grooves and channels require complex manufacturing molds.

[0037] Advantageously, the metal reinforcement comprises a plurality of overmolding openings so that the plastic body can be overmolded on both sides of the metal reinforcement and the plastic body can be materially continuous through the overmolding openings. The plastic body is then well anchored to the metal reinforcement and the injection molding process and mold are simplified.

[0038] Advantageously, a first plurality of overmoulded openings is arranged at the first portion and a second plurality of overmoulded openings is arranged at the second portion.

[0039] Advantageously, the metal reinforcement comprises at least one cylindrical portion delimited by a shoulder, and the boundary is located at the shoulder. The positioning of the boundary at the shoulder involves the presence of the same plastic material on either side of the connection radius between the shoulder and the rest of the reinforcement. Thus, the strength of the housing part comprising two plastic materials is increased.

[0040] Advantageously, the shoulder does not contain openings. Such a shoulder made of solid material provides good resistance to deformation when the pyrotechnic actuator is ignited and generates high pressures (tens of bars or more), which significantly limits the risk of breakage, fracture, leakage during operation.

[0041] Advantageously, the shoulder is planar.

[0042] Advantageously, the boundary between the first portion and the second portion is arranged at the shoulder.

[0043] Advantageously, the pyrotechnic actuator is overmoulded in the first plastics material.

[0044] Advantageously, the metal reinforcement comprises a terminal shoulder defining a central hole in which the pyrotechnic actuator is arranged and which is free of other recesses. In other words, the terminal shoulder on which the igniter is overmoulded is made of a solid sheet metal without holes or through recesses for the plastic material in order to ensure good retention.

[0045] Advantageously, the other of the first housing part or the second housing part is a complete plastic part made of the second plastic material.

[0046] Advantageously, the pyrotechnic switch comprises a rivet, wherein the first housing part is attached to the second housing part with the rivet, and wherein the metal reinforcement comprises a through hole for the rivet.

[0047] Advantageously, the pyrotechnic switch comprises an electrical conductor sandwiched between a first housing part and a second housing part.

[0048] Advantageously, the metal reinforcement is at least partially arranged on the outside, which simplifies the overmolding process (plastic material is arranged on a single side of the metal reinforcement).

[0049] Advantageously, the metal reinforcement comprises a protruding or recessed form, such as a ridge or depression, in order to increase the resistance to separation, delamination or sliding (translation or rotation) between the metal reinforcement and the overmoulded plastic material.

[0050] A second aspect of the invention relates to a motor vehicle safety device comprising a pyrotechnic switch according to the first aspect of the invention.

[0051] A third aspect of the invention relates to a motor vehicle comprising at least one pyrotechnic switch according to the first aspect of the invention. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0062] Figure 1 A perspective view of a pyrotechnic device according to the invention is shown, the pyrotechnic device comprising a housing 10 formed by a first housing part 11 and a second housing part 12. An electrical conductor 20 is sandwiched between the first housing part 11 and the second housing part 12.

[0063] Figure 1 The lower part of the embodiment shows the connection interface 31 of the pyrotechnic actuator 32, which is installed in the housing 10 and is located at the bottom of the housing 10. Figure 3 Shown in.

[0064] this Figure 3 The internal structure of a pyrotechnic device is shown, which is arranged here as a switch, which is arranged to disconnect the electrical conductor 20 when required (for example, to disconnect the vehicle power supply circuit in the event of an accident).

[0065] To this end, the electrical conductor 20 carries an overmoulded guide portion 21 which forms a hole in which the punch 33 is placed and which, together with the second housing part 12, forms a combustion chamber C facing a pyrotechnic actuator 32 (in this case an electric pyrotechnic igniter, but an additional pyrotechnic booster is conceivable if necessary). Figure 3 In the embodiment, the punch 33 is in a static position.

[0066] The first housing part 11 comprises, facing the punch 33 and on the other side of the electrical conductor 20 , a counter-form component 34 , which can be regarded as an anvil or a base.

[0067] When it is necessary to disconnect the electrical conductor 20, the pyrotechnic actuator 32 is ignited, which causes a significant increase in the pressure in the combustion chamber, causing the plunger 33 to be pushed toward the end position in a translational movement from the rest position to the final position. Figure 3 In this final position, the electrical conductor 20 is disconnected.

[0068] Considering that the pyrotechnic device is arranged to be able to operate even after a service life of several years, and in operation, pressures of several tens of bars or more are expected, according to the example shown, a sealing member having a seal 13 and a seal 14 is arranged between the first housing part 11, the second housing part 12, and the guide part 21. A seal 15 is also arranged between the punch 33 and the second housing part 12.

[0069] It will be appreciated that it is therefore necessary to ensure a good attachment between the first housing part 11 and the second housing part 12. However, in order to ensure good electrical insulation, it is also necessary for the housing 10 to be non-conductive, for example, between the electrical conductor 20 and the ground of the vehicle. To meet the latter condition, each housing part 11 and 12 has a plastic body C1 or C2. To meet the attachment condition, provision is made for riveting the housing part 11 and the housing part 12 together using a rivet 40, which can be seen at Figure 1 and Figure 2 Before assembling the housing, in order to ensure effective retention of the electrical conductor 20 and tightness of the device, the first housing part 11 and the second housing part 12 are not in contact.

[0070] Figure 2 A cross section is shown at the rivet 40 to illustrate the assembly. In particular, provision is made for arranging a metal reinforcement 16 in the second housing part 12 in order to limit stresses on the plastic body of this second housing part 12 .

[0071] The rivets 40 are shoulder rivets. That is, before riveting, they have a base 40E and a cylindrical body so as to be able to be inserted into each housing part 11 and 12 having a through opening for the rivet 40. Each rivet 40 is then deformed at its head 40T so as to complete the assembly, ensure the leaktightness of the device and prevent any subsequent disassembly. According to this embodiment, the head 40T is embedded below the surface of the second housing part 12 or flush with it.

[0072] In practice, during this riveting operation, the base 40E of each rivet 40 is brought into contact with the base tool and a setting tool (riveting tool) movable according to a specific movement to at least temporarily tilt relative to the axis of the rivet 40 is brought into contact with the head 40T of the rivet 40 so as to apply a vertical force thereto, thereby crushing and expanding the head 40T by plastic deformation during the rotation and / or oscillating movement of the setting tool.

[0073] The riveting operation causes the head 40T to deform in order to ensure axial retention of the second housing part 12 without thereby deforming the cylindrical portion of the rivet 40 , in particular at the base 40E.

[0074] As in Figure 2 As can be seen in the figure, the plastic body C2 of the second housing part 12 has a through opening wider than the metal reinforcement 16, so that the rivet 40 contacts the second housing part 12 at the head 40E only via the metal reinforcement 16. As a result, the rivet 40 does not apply radial force to the plastic body C2. The risk of cracking, breaking or damaging the plastic is thus prevented. In other words, the passage diameter of the rivet 40 into the plastic bodies C1 and C2 is larger than the passage diameter into the metal reinforcement 16.

[0075] This embodiment ensures that the rivet 40 contacts the second housing portion 12 only via the metal reinforcement 16 , and that expansion of the diameter of its shank does not cause the rivet 40 to contact either of the plastic bodies C1 or C2 .

[0076] Furthermore, since the rivet 40 is not deformed at its base 40E, according to the preferred and optional embodiment, there is no need to provide any metal reinforcement in the first housing part 11 to withstand the riveting operation. Therefore, according to this embodiment, the first housing part is constituted only by the plastic body C1.

[0077] Figure 4 An example of a metal reinforcement 16 is shown, which includes a hole 16T (which can be Figure 4 , Figure 5 and Figure 6 ), so that the plastic material of the plastic body C2 of the second shell part 12 can be continuous, so as to facilitate the overmolding operation and obtain a solid plastic body C2.

[0078] The metal reinforcement 16 may be made of stamped steel of type DC04-1.0338 (Re: 210 MPa to 220 MPa, Rm: 270 MPa to 350 MPa, A%>38%).

[0079] The plastic body C1 of the first housing part 11 can be made of a polymer such as polyamide (PA, PA6.6, PA6.12) or polyoxymethylene (POM), optionally loaded with reinforcing fibers such as glass fibers at a ratio of 25% to 35% by weight, for example. The rivet 40 can be made of steel, copper, or aluminum with a high elongation at break (e.g., A%>20%).

[0080] As for the second housing part 12 , it is composed of two plastic materials: a first part 12 a made of a first plastic material and a second part 12 b made of a second plastic material.

[0081] Thus, the connection interface 31 is produced in the second part 12B of the second housing part 12, which is made of a second plastic material and can be made of, for example, polyamide (PA, PA6, PA6-12, PA6-6) and contains between 10% and 50% by weight of reinforcing fibers (for example made of glass). Specifically, a polyamide PA6 with 30% by weight of glass fibers can be selected. As a result, since the selected second plastic material is easy to inject into a mold with a complex shape, a small-sized but still precise shape (groove, recess) can be provided at the connection interface 31. In addition, the selected second material can also appropriately withstand the pressure present in the combustion chamber C due to the added reinforcing fibers.

[0082] In addition, the first part 12A of the second housing part 12 made of the first plastic material may be intended to be exposed to an environment in which an arc is formed during operation of the switch. According to such a case, a portion of the first plastic material is arranged to be removed by ablation, and the first plastic material is selected from polyphthalamide (PPA), polyoxymethylene (POM), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA).

[0083] Figure 5 The second housing portion 12 is shown after a first injection molding operation during which the first portion 12A is injection molded with a first plastic material.

[0084] Figure 6 The second housing portion 12 is shown after a second injection molding operation during which the second portion 12B is injection molded with a second plastic material.

[0085] Figure 5 It is also shown that the first plastic material is molded onto the shoulder of the metal reinforcement 16, wherein the boundary F between the two sides of the metal reinforcement 16 is offset. In fact, the lower boundary Fi (at Figure 5 The lower side of the metal reinforcement 16 in the second housing part 12 has a smaller inner diameter than the upper boundary Fs on the other side. This structure offers several advantages. In fact, the shoulder of the metal reinforcement 16 does not contain holes, and combined with the offset of the boundaries, this makes it possible to obtain good rigidity and low deformation of the second housing part 12. This limits the risks of breakage, delamination and cracking.

[0086] It may also be mentioned that the manufacturing mould for the second injection moulding operation of the second plastic material may abut against the surface 12As and / or 12Ai of the first plastic material at the boundary F, which also simplifies manufacturing.

[0087] also, Figure 8 More specifically, Figure 6 The details A shown correspond to a specific embodiment of the interface between the first part 12A and the second part 12B. In fact, in order to prevent the metal reinforcement 16 from being exposed to the outside, it may be advantageous to provide the material with a covering, for example at the lower boundary Fi. In fact, Figure 8 A return Re of the second plastic material beneath the first plastic material is shown, which prevents the metal reinforcement 16 from being exposed, even in the event of a different expansion of the plastic materials. In order to further improve the mechanical strength between the two parts, it may be advantageous to also provide a nesting of materials. Nesting and covering may or may not be combined, depending on the requirements.

[0088] also, Fig. 9 Shows Figure 8 A cross section in plane II of FIG. 1 is provided to illustrate a specific embodiment of material nesting. In practice, Fig. 9Two plastic materials are shown nested in each other, with the undercut being located at the lower boundary Fi. Fig. 9 In the embodiment, the complementary shape has a cylindrical toothed profile or cross-section, but a straight dovetail shape may be provided, for example. This embodiment increases the strength of the boundary or interface between the two materials and further limits the risk of material separation or delamination. If the nesting of the materials is provided without covering, the complementary shape may be visible if it is arranged over the entire thickness of the plastic material.

[0089] Regarding the metal reinforcement 16, the metal reinforcement includes a hole 16T, which can be Figure 4 , Figure 5 and Figure 7 As can be seen in FIG. 1 , the holes include holes 16T1 and 16T2, each hole being dedicated to enabling the first plastic material and the second plastic material to be continuous, respectively. Finally, the metal reinforcement 16 is Figure 6 Its lower portion is shown to include a shoulder 16E having a through hole 16P for a pyrotechnic actuator 32 (for clarity, the pyrotechnic actuator may be located in the Figure 3 Seen in Figure 6 The shoulder 16E contains no holes or recesses other than the through hole 16P, so as to provide sufficient resistance to the forces and stresses present in this region during operation, in particular due to the pressure in the combustion chamber C.

[0090] Figure 7 A manufacturing alternative is shown, according to which the second plastic material is injected first. However, the boundary F always includes the offset (Fs, Fi) between the two sides of the metal reinforcement 16 and the contact surfaces 12Bs, 12Bi with a continuous perimeter to provide a sealing contact on the manufacturing mold for the subsequent overmolding operation.

[0091] It should be understood that various modifications and / or improvements obvious to those skilled in the art may be made to the various embodiments of the invention described in this specification without departing from the scope of the invention.
