[0002] This case claims priority and all other benefits of U.S. application serial number 63 / 521,789 filed on June 19, 2023 (attorney case number 34922.05195) and U.S. application serial number 63 / 583,418 filed on September 18, 2023 (attorney case number 34922.05203), the entire disclosures of which are incorporated herein by reference in their entirety. Technical Field
[0003] The inventive concepts disclosed herein generally relate to a multi-layer label, and more particularly, to a multi-layer adhesive label including a removable first label covering at least a portion of a second label having an area for writing with a writing instrument. The inventive concepts disclosed herein also generally relate to an object (such as a box or other container) having a multi-layer adhesive label adhered thereto, a kit including instructions for using the multi-layer adhesive label, and a method of applying the multi-layer adhesive label to an object (such as a box or other container). Background Art
[0004] Pre-printed labels that can be applied directly to the surface of a product before commercial sale are generally known in the art. Conventional pre-printed labels are single-layer labels that include a front side (e.g., a brand name, product specifications, and a UPC code) depicting retail or sales information and a sticky rear side for fixing to the product. It is also generally known that certain products can be used for tidying purposes and for storing items, including for storing items in a home, office, or garage. Consumers can purchase certain products that are commonly used for home tidying, such as boxes (e.g., made of transparent and / or opaque and / or translucent plastics (e.g., PET), or made of wire with a flat plate), other retainers, racks, tidying bags, and other similar items to accommodate items in their use space. In addition, it is advantageous for users to be able to identify the contents of their home tidying products, traditionally by pasting their own labels to the outer surface of the product, and marking or writing on the pasted labels to identify the contents stored in the product. Summary of the invention
[0005] Applicants have recognized that there is an unmet need for a multi-layer label that includes a first pre-printed removable label having a second label therebelow that has an area for writing with a writing instrument (e.g., a blank second label) so that the multi-layer label can be used as a retail label at the point of sale and, once the removable first label is removed by a consumer, will allow the consumer to mark the second blank label to identify the contents of the product to which the multi-layer label is attached. In some exemplary embodiments, the second label has an area for writing that is at least 50% blank, such as at least 75% blank or completely blank. In other exemplary embodiments, the second label has an area for writing that has some printing thereon that is light enough so as not to obscure what is written by a pen or permanent marker, such as a lightly printed pattern or image that covers at least 50%, or covers at least 75%, or covers the entire second label. In some exemplary embodiments, the removable first label also includes instructions for the user to remove the removable first label from the object or box (e.g., "peel here" or other instructions to remove the removable first label printed on the removable first label itself, such as printed on a corner thereof), allowing the user to write on the second label that is still on the object or box.
[0006] Various embodiments described herein relate to multi-layer adhesive labels, or objects with such multi-layer adhesive labels, such as boxes. The multi-layer adhesive label includes a removable first label having a retail front side and a first rear side. The first rear side includes a first adhesive on at least a portion of the first rear side. The multi-layer adhesive label also includes a second label having a second front side and a second rear side. The second front side includes an outer surface that can be written on it using a writing instrument, wherein at least 50% of the second front side provides an area for writing using a writing instrument. In an exemplary embodiment, the writing content can be removed. The second label includes a means for attaching the second label to an object such as a box on at least a portion of the rear side of the second label, and the first rear side adheres to at least one of the second front side or the object and can be removed from at least one of the second front side or the object. The first rear side covers at least a portion of the second front side of the second label, and the removable first label carries the second label.
[0007] The present application also discloses various embodiments of objects (such as boxes) that relate to multilayer adhesive labels or such multilayer adhesive labels adhered thereto. The multilayer label includes a removable first label having a retail front side and a first rear side. The first rear side includes a first adhesive on at least a portion of the first rear side. The multilayer adhesive label also includes a second label having a second front side and a second rear side. The second front side includes an outer surface that can be written on it using a writing instrument, wherein at least 50% of the second front side provides an area for writing using a writing instrument. The second label includes a device for attaching the second label to an object (such as a box) on at least a portion of the rear side, wherein the first rear side adheres to at least one of the second front side or the object and can be removed therefrom, the first rear side covers at least a portion of the second label and the removable first label carries the second label. The means for attaching the second label allows the second label to be removed from the surface of the object and repositioned on the same or another surface of the object (the same surface or a different surface of the object).
[0008] In an exemplary embodiment, the removable first label covers the second front side of the second label. In an exemplary embodiment, the first adhesive of the removable first label is removably adhered to at least 10% of the area of the second front side of the second label. In an exemplary embodiment, the entire second front side of the second label is adhered to the first adhesive of the removable first label and can be removed therefrom. In an exemplary embodiment, the first adhesive is only on the periphery of the first rear side, or on a portion of the periphery of the first rear side (e.g., only on the upper and lower edges or only on the left and right edges), so that at least the central area of the first rear side is free of adhesive. In an exemplary embodiment, the first adhesive is only on the periphery of the first rear side, or on a portion of the periphery of the first rear side (e.g., only on the upper and lower edges or only on the left and right edges, only on the left and right sides, or only in the corners), leaving at least a central area of the first rear side that is at least as large as the second label without adhesive, so that the removable first label can cover the second front side of the second label without being adhered thereto. In an exemplary embodiment, adhesive is only present at the outer corners of the first rear side of the removable first label. In an exemplary embodiment, there is no adhesive on at least one corner of the first rear side of the removable first label covering a portion of the second label, so that when the corner is removed, the adhesive of the first rear side will not lift the corresponding corner of the second label below. In some exemplary embodiments, the first rear side of the removable first label contains a first adhesive, and further contains a viscosity-reducing barrier in at least one area on the first rear side of the removable first label. This allows the use of labels that already have adhesive on their rear side (the viscosity-reducing barrier is applied on the existing adhesive layer), which is more cost-effective than trying to apply the adhesive to less than the entire rear side of the label and leaving one or more areas without adhesive. In some exemplary embodiments, the viscosity-reducing barrier is a very thin layer of a material such as varnish or silicone oil, which is applied to at least one area of the adhesive on the first rear side. In an exemplary embodiment, the viscosity-reducing barrier is printed on the adhesive of the first rear side, like printing ink. In an exemplary embodiment, the silicone oil is applied as a varnish. In an exemplary embodiment, the viscosity-reducing barrier (e.g., silicone oil or varnish) has a matte finish. In an exemplary embodiment, the viscosity reduction barrier is any one or more of low odor, abrasion resistance, high gloss, and high transparency. In an exemplary embodiment, the viscosity reduction barrier comprises silicone oil in the form of a flexographic printing ink. Exemplary embodiments with an applied viscosity reduction barrier allow the removable first label to be more easily removed from the second label by placing a barrier layer between the adhesive and the second label. In an alternative, the region or viscosity reduction barrier may be printed on the front side of the second label instead of or in addition to the region or viscosity reduction barrier applied to the rear side of the removable first label. In an exemplary embodiment, the viscosity reducing barrier is applied to at least one area of the first rear side of the removable first label and near the perimeter of the second label, for example, at about 8 locations (for example, at each of the four corners of the second label, and at least one of the lengths of the top and bottom edges of the second label when the two labels are attached). In other exemplary embodiments, the viscosity reducing barrier is applied to four adhesive areas on the rear side of the first label corresponding to the four corners of the second label when the two labels are attached. In other exemplary embodiments, the viscosity reducing barrier is applied to four adhesive areas on the rear side of the first label corresponding to the four corners of the second label when the two labels are attached, and to a plurality of additional adhesive areas on the rear side of the first label corresponding to the edges of the second label.
[0009] In an exemplary embodiment, a cohesive force is generated between the second front side of the second label and the box or object to which it is applied. In an exemplary embodiment, an adhesive force is generated between the second front side of the second label and the first rear side of the removable first label. In an exemplary embodiment, before the removable first label is applied to the box or object, the second front side of the second label is removably attached to the first rear side of the removable first label by an electrostatic adsorption force. In an exemplary embodiment, after the removable first label is removed from the box or object, the second front side of the second label is removably attached to the first rear side of the removable first label by an electrostatic adsorption force, so that the second label can be removed from the removed removable first label and reapplied to the box or object. In an exemplary embodiment, before the removable first label is applied to the box or object and after the removable first label is removed from the box or object, the second front side of the second label is removably attached to the first rear side of the removable first label by an electrostatic adsorption force, so that the second label can be removed from the removed removable first label and reapplied to the box or object.

Figure 6C The removable first label 12 is shown such that the second label 18 is not adhered to the first adhesive 26 . Fig.6O An exemplary multi-layer adhesive label 2 is shown having a third adhesive 30 (e.g., electrostatically attached) formed behind a much smaller second label 18 having a third adhesive 30 (e.g., electrostatically attached) across the entire rear side. Figure 6C The removable first label 12 is shown such that the second label 18 is not adhered to the first adhesive 26 . Figure 6P An exemplary multi-layer adhesive label 2 is shown, which is formed with a smaller second label 18 behind it. Figure 6MThe removable first label 12 is shown with the corner of the second label 18 proximate a corner region 36 of the removable first label 12 that does not have adhesive. Figure 6R An exemplary multi-layer adhesive label 2 is shown, which is formed with Figure 6Q The removable first label 12 is shown and adhered to a slightly smaller second label 18 having a second adhesive 28 on its entire rear side, with the corners of the second label 18 being on small areas 38 of the removable first label 12 that are free of adhesive. Alternative embodiments (not shown) include relatively small areas 38 of no adhesive on two, three, or all four corners of the second label 18. Figure 6S An exemplary multi-layer adhesive label 2 is shown, which is formed with Figure 6C A removable first label 12 is shown positioned behind a slightly smaller second label 18 and adhered thereto. Figure 6T An exemplary multi-layer adhesive label 2 is shown, which is formed with Figure 6M The removable first label 12 is located behind and adhered to a slightly smaller second label 18, with the corners of the second label 18 adjacent to the adhesive-free corner areas 36 of the removable first label 12. In some exemplary embodiments, Figure 6R The first front side 16 of the removable first label 12 of the 6T or 6T includes text reading "Peel Here" or the like to indicate to the user the location of the corner that can be peeled off without lifting the corresponding corner of the second label 18. Figure 6V , 6X 6Z depict an exemplary first back side 16 of a removable first label 12 including at least one small area 38 without adhesive (or a reduced adhesion barrier, as explained herein) near the interface between an edge of the second label 18 and the first back side 16 of the removable first label 12, and further depicting the second label 18 adhered to the first back side 16 of the removable first label 12. In some exemplary embodiments, the small area 38 without adhesive (or the reduced adhesion barrier, as explained herein) includes a peripheral area corresponding to the edge of the second label 18, such that when the second label 18 is adjacent to the removable first label 12, the edge of the second label 18 is located within the small area 38 without adhesive.
[0055] As further described herein, it should be understood that the areas described herein as "adhesive-free" ("without adhesive") or having a "third adhesive" or "fourth adhesive" (e.g., 30, 32, 34, 36, 38) should also include areas where adhesive is or was present but where the adhesive has been neutralized or reduced, such as where the area also includes a viscosity-reducing barrier (e.g., silicone oil or varnish) applied on top of the existing adhesive, wherein the viscosity-reducing barrier offsets, reduces or neutralizes the adhesive and prevents the area (e.g., 30, 32, 34, 36, 38) from adhering to the second front side 20 of the second label 18 (effectively forming an area of no adhesive or at least reduced adhesive so that the first label can be removed without lifting any portion of the second label). It should also be understood that any or all of the areas described herein as being on the first rear side 16 of the removable first label 12, such as 30, 32, 34, 36, 38, may alternatively or additionally be present on the second front side 20 of the second label 18, such as by spraying or printing the viscosity-reducing barrier on the front side of the second label.
[0056] In some exemplary embodiments, the first adhesive 26 is applied to the first back side 16 of the removable first label 12, and in a subset of the adhesive, a reduced viscosity barrier is applied to the first back side 16 to create an area of the removable first label in which there is a barrier between the adhesive and the second label 18 to create an area of the removable first label 12 that is substantially non-sticky (even though it has adhesive). For example, in some exemplary embodiments, the first adhesive 26 is applied uniformly across the entire first back side 16 of the removable first label 12 (e.g., Fig. 6A), then a viscosity reducing barrier is applied to a smaller area of the back side, such as areas 34, 36, 38, or any other area shown or described without adhesive. In some exemplary embodiments, the viscosity reducing barrier is a very thin layer of silicone oil applied to an area of the back side, such as areas 34, 36, 38, or any other area without adhesive, shown applied, for example, as printed onto the first adhesive 26 as ink would be printed. Exemplary embodiments with an applied viscosity reducing barrier allow the removable first label 12 to be more easily removed from the second label by placing a barrier between the first adhesive 26 and the second label 18. In an alternative, instead of or in addition to an area or viscosity reducing barrier applied to the first back side 16 of the removable first label 12, the area or viscosity reducing barrier may be printed on the front side of the second label 18. In an exemplary embodiment, the viscosity reducing barrier is applied to at least one area of the first back side 16 of the removable first label 12, the at least one area corresponding to the perimeter or outer edge of the second label 18 (when the second label 18 is close to the removable first label 12). In an exemplary embodiment, the viscosity reducing barrier is applied to 1-50 areas, 5-2 areas, or 5-10 areas (e.g., near each of the four corners of the second label 18 and in at least one area along the length of the top edge and the bottom edge of the second label 18), for example, see Figure 6U-6Z In some exemplary embodiments, Figure 6Y and 6Z As shown, the small area 38 without adhesive includes a peripheral area corresponding to the edge of the second label 18, so that when the second label 18 is close to the removable first label 12, the edge of the second label 18 is located in the area without adhesive 38. In some embodiments, the viscosity-reducing barrier can be a silicone oil, such as polydimethylsiloxane (C2H6OSi). n In an exemplary embodiment, the silicone oil is applied as a varnish. In an exemplary embodiment, the silicone oil varnish has a matte finish. In an exemplary embodiment, the silicone oil is any one or more of low odor, abrasion resistant, high gloss, and high clarity. In an exemplary embodiment, the viscosity reduction barrier comprises silicone oil in the form of a flexo printing ink. In an exemplary embodiment, the area without adhesive may include any pattern or shape. It is fully understood that Figure 6A-6Z Any adhesive pattern shown and described in one or more of the above may exist alone or in combination with Figure 6A-6Z Any one or more adhesive patterns shown in any other figure of the present invention are present in combination.
