Description

Technical Field

[0001] The present invention relates to a package for smoking articles. Background Art

[0002] Smoking articles, such as cigarettes, are usually stored in a pack comprising an outer shell and a sealed pouch wrapped around the smoking articles. The outer shell usually has a hinged lid that can be moved from a closed position to an open position to allow a user to access the pouch and the smoking articles stored therein.

[0003] The known problem about the existing packing box for smoking articles is that they are not enough to biodegradable resistance and sustainability. Specifically, due to the requirement that smoking articles remain sealed with the environment during storage, pouches are usually made of impermeable plastics or metals to prevent air or moisture from entering. For example, pouches are usually made of plastic film or paper laminates or plastic and metal laminates that comprise barrier plastics. Such material is non-biodegradable and difficult to recycle.

[0004] While it is important that the pouch is sealed from the environment, it is also desirable that the pouch be quickly and easily opened by the user whilst allowing convenient access to the smoking articles once opened. This combination of properties is difficult to achieve using sustainable materials.

[0005] It is an object of the present invention to address one or more of these problems. Summary of the invention

[0006] According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a packaging box for smoking articles, the packaging box comprising: an outer shell, the outer shell comprising a main body and a lid, wherein the main body comprises: a front panel; a rear panel; a bottom panel; a first side panel; and a second side panel, the front panel, the rear panel, the bottom panel, the first side panel, and the second side panel together define a main compartment, the main compartment having an opening opposite to the bottom panel, and wherein a hinge is formed between the lid and the rear panel of the main body so that the lid can be moved between an open position and a closed position; a substantially cubic pouch, comprising: a front main portion; a rear main portion; a top secondary portion; a bottom secondary portion; a first side portion; and a second side portion, wherein the pouch is received in the main compartment so that the pouch protruding from the main compartment through the opening, wherein the pouch is completely contained within the housing when the lid is in the closed position, and wherein the pouch includes a cellulose-based wrapper; and a tear tape attached to the pouch and arranged to extend around the pouch in a transverse direction relative to the length of the pouch such that the tear tape is located above the hinge, and wherein the tear tape is configured to be pulled by a user to separate a top section of the pouch from a bottom section of the pouch, and wherein the top section of the pouch includes at least a portion of a top secondary portion, a front main portion, a rear main portion, a first side portion, and a second side portion of the pouch, and wherein the bottom section of the pouch includes at least a portion of a bottom secondary portion, a front main portion, a rear main portion, a first side portion, and a second side portion of the pouch.

[0007] Advantageously, the cellulose-based wrapper is used in combination with a transverse tear strip to produce an environmentally friendly package that provides easy access to the smoking articles. Specifically, by arranging the tear strip and hinge so that the tear strip is vertically located above the hinge, the tear strip can more easily remove the top section of the pouch from the bottom section of the pouch. That is, when the lid is in the open position, the tear strip is located above the hinge so that the housing does not prevent the user from pulling the tear strip and opening the pouch.

[0008] The skilled person will appreciate that the length of the pouch is the vertical distance between the top minor portion and the bottom minor portion. This may also be referred to as the height of the pouch.

[0009] Preferably, the wrapping paper comprises (or consists of) paper, hemp, formed cellulose pulp, virgin fiber pulp or tobacco dust with paper. In this way, the environmental impact of the packaging box is reduced.

[0010] Preferably, the pouch comprises a wrapping paper and a moisture barrier coating formed on the wrapping paper (or consisting of it). Like this, the pouch is constructed of sustainable materials, which effectively seal and protect the smoking article contained in the pouch from the influence of the external environment. Alternatively, the pouch comprises the following (or consists of the following): a wrapping paper, a moisture barrier coating formed on the wrapping paper, and an outer coating formed on the surface opposite to the moisture barrier coating of the wrapping paper. The outer coating can increase one or more of the strength, thickness, density and the opacity of the pouch.

[0011] Preferably, the moisture barrier coating is a heat sealable coating (or heat seal adhesive). The heat sealable coating (e.g., a thermoplastic film) is bonded to the wrapper by applying pressure and heating the coating. The moisture barrier coating may include one or more layers or films. Alternatively, the moisture barrier coating may be a water-based paint.

[0012] In a less preferred option, the moisture barrier coating is a hot melt adhesive, ie an adhesive that is applied in a molten state and forms a bond when cooled to a solid state.

[0013] Preferably, the moisture barrier coating also reduces or prevents the ingress (or migration) of oxygen, air, flavoring agents, and / or menthol.

[0014] Preferably, the pouch (i.e., wrapper and moisture barrier coating) has a water vapor transmission rate of 0-10 g / m² / day (at 23°C, 50% RH) and an oxygen transmission rate of < 10 ccm / m² / day (at 23°C, 50% RH). In one embodiment, the pouch may have a water vapor transmission rate of 2-10 g / m² / day (at 23°C, 50% RH).

[0015] Preferably, the thickness of the pouch (ie the wrapper, the moisture barrier coating, and optionally the outer coating) is 65 μm to 85 μm.

[0016] Preferably, the density of the pouch (ie the wrapper, the moisture barrier coating, and optionally the outer coating) is from 50 to 92 g / m2, more preferably from 50 to 85 g / m2.

[0017] In one example, the pouch may include an outer coating, the pouch may have a thickness of 75 µm, the pouch may have a density of 90 g / m2, and the average water vapor transmission rate may be < 1 g / m² / day at 23°C, 50% RH. In another example, the pouch may not include an outer coating, the pouch may have a thickness of 67 µm, the pouch may have a density of 75 g / m2, and the average water vapor transmission rate may be < 1 g / m² / day at 23°C, 50% RH. In another example, the pouch may not include an outer coating, the pouch may have a thickness of 65-85 µm, the pouch may have a density of 70 g / m2, and the average water vapor transmission rate may be < 3 g / m² / day at 23°C, 50% RH. In another example, the pouch may not include an outer coating, the pouch may have a thickness of 82 µm, the pouch may have a density of 75 g / m2, and the average water vapor transmission rate may be < 8 g / m² / day at 23°C, 50% RH.

[0018] Preferably, the moisture barrier coating is formed on the inner surface of the pouch.Preferably, the outer coating is formed on the outer surface of the pouch.

[0019] Preferably, the tear strip extends around the entire pouch.Preferably, the tear strip extends along the entire width of (each of) the front main portion, the first side portion, the rear main portion and the second side portion of the pouch.

[0020] Preferably, the tear tape is positioned closer to the hinge than the top minor portion of the pouch. For example, the tear tape may be positioned above the hinge such that the distance between the bottom edge of the tear tape and the hinge is less than the width of the tear tape. Thus, by positioning the tear tape adjacent to the hinge, rather than adjacent to the top minor portion of the pouch, the pouch may be more reliably torn around the circumference of the pouch. In contrast, if the tear tape is positioned toward or adjacent to the top minor portion of the pouch, the likelihood of the pouch being inadvertently torn across the top minor portion increases.

[0021] Preferably, the bottom edge of the tear strip is arranged to be substantially flush with the hinge. That is, the bottom edge of the tear strip and the hinge are located in the same plane. Thus, since the bottom edge of the tear strip coincides with the hinge, the hinge provides a guide edge along which the tear strip can be pulled, thereby improving the speed and reliability of opening.

[0022] Preferably, the tear tape is attached to the inner surface of the pouch and extends through the pouch to expose the tear tab to be pulled by the user. Like this, the tear tape is protected from the influence of the external environment by the pouch, and ensures that the pouch is torn when the tear tape is pulled by the user.

[0023] Preferably, the tear strip comprises (or consists of) a paper-based or cellulose-based material. In this way, the environmental impact of the packaging box is further reduced.

[0024] Preferably, the packing box further comprises a reinforcing element, which is arranged in the pouch and is arranged to be flush with the inner surface of the pouch. Like this, the existence of the reinforcing element allows to remove a larger proportion of the pouch, i.e. a larger top section, while maintaining the high rigidity of the packing box.

[0025] Preferably, the reinforcing element is a cellulose-based reinforcing element. For example, the reinforcing element may comprise (or consist of) paper, hemp or formed cellulose pulp. In this way, the environmental impact of the packaging box is further reduced.

[0026] Preferably, the stiffness of the reinforcing element is higher than the stiffness of the pouch. For example, the reinforcing element may have a density of 130 to 200 g / m2.

[0027] Preferably, the reinforcing element comprises a front portion, which is arranged adjacent to the front main part of the pouch, wherein the front portion has a cutout on its top edge, and wherein the cutout extends downwards to at least be flush with the bottom edge of the tear strip. More preferably, the cutout extends downwards to at least be flush with the weakening line. In this way, the ease of access to the smoking article is improved while maintaining the high rigidity of the packing box.

[0028] Preferably, the cut extends a distance below the bottom edge of the tear strip, such as 1 mm, 2 mm or 3 mm. More preferably, the cut extends a distance below the weakening line. For example, the cut may extend a distance below the top edge of the front portion of 10% to 30% of the height of the front portion, such as 10 mm, 11 mm, 12 mm, 13 mm, 14 mm or 15 mm.

[0029] Preferably, the cutout is centrally located along the top edge of the front portion of the reinforcing element.

[0030] Preferably, the width of the cutout is at least 50% of the width of the front portion of the reinforcing element.

[0031] Preferably, the reinforcing element is a folding element further comprising a first side portion and a second side portion, wherein the first side portion and the second side portion of the reinforcing element are arranged to be adjacent to the first side portion and the second side portion of the pouch, respectively, and wherein the first side portion and the second side portion of the reinforcing element each have a length equal to the length of the pouch. More preferably, the reinforcing element consists of the front portion, the first side portion and the second side portion. In this way, the weight of the packaging box is reduced while maintaining high rigidity.

[0032] Preferably, the package further comprises an internal frame disposed between the pouch and the outer shell, wherein the internal frame comprises a front portion disposed adjacent to the front panel of the body, and wherein a top edge of the front portion of the internal frame is located below the tear strip. In this way, the frame further increases the rigidity of the package without reducing the accessibility of the tear strip.

[0033] Preferably, the top edge of the front of the frame is arranged to be substantially flush with the bottom edge and / or the weakening line of the tear strip. In this way, by arranging the top edge of the front of the frame to coincide with the bottom edge and / or the weakening line of the tear strip, another guide edge is provided, along which the tear strip can be pulled and the pouch is opened. The preferred combination of the hinge (i.e., adjacent to the rear panel of the housing) and the top edge of the frame (i.e., adjacent to the front panel of the housing) being arranged in the same plane as the bottom edge of the tear strip optimizes the accessibility of the smoking article in the pouch by ensuring that the tear strip can be reliably pulled around the entire circumference of the pouch.

[0034] Preferably, the frame is a cellulose-based frame. For example, the frame may comprise (or consist of) paper, hemp or formed cellulose pulp. In this way, the environmental impact of the packaging box is further reduced.

[0035] Preferably, the front portion of the frame further includes a notch on its top edge, which extends to a certain distance below the bottom edge of the tear strip. More preferably, the notch extends to a certain distance below the weakening line. Like this, the smoking article that the pouch accommodates can be touched more easily while maintaining the high rigidity of the packing box.

[0036] Preferably, the cutout is centrally located along the top edge of the front portion of the frame.

[0037] Preferably, the frame is a folding element further comprising a first side portion and a second side portion, wherein the first side portion and the second side portion of the frame are arranged to be adjacent to the first side panel and the second side panel of the body respectively. More preferably, the reinforcing element consists of the front portion, the first side portion and the second side portion. In this way, the weight of the packaging box is reduced while maintaining high rigidity.

[0038] Preferably, the top edges of the first and second side portions of the frame are arranged below the tear strip.

[0039] Preferably, the first side and the second side of the frame are shaped so as not to block the lid from moving to the closed position. For example, the first side and the second side may be tilted downward or curved away from the opening of the main compartment so that the lid does not contact the first side and the second side when moving to the closed position.

[0040] Preferably, a weakening line is formed in the pouch, wherein the weakening line is arranged parallel to and adjacent to the bottom edge of the tear strip. For example, the weakening line may be flush with the bottom edge of the tear strip and / or the hinge. Alternatively, the weakening line may be located up to 3 mm below the bottom edge of the tear strip. In this way, when the tear strip is pulled, the pouch is biased to open along the weakening line, thereby further improving the ease of opening the pouch.

[0041] Preferably, the line of weakness is formed on an outer surface of the pouch and wherein the moisture barrier coating is formed on an inner surface of the pouch.

[0042] Preferably, the line of weakness extends partially through the wrapper. In this way, the line of weakness does not affect the seal of the pouch with the external environment. Preferably, the line of weakness extends through less than 80%, preferably less than 70%, more preferably less than 60% and more than 20%, preferably more than 30%, more preferably more than 40% of the thickness of the wrapper.

[0043] Preferably, the line of weakness is a pre-cut line, for example made by laser scoring, mechanical embossing or mechanical scoring. For example, the line of weakness may partially cut through the wrapper without extending through the moisture barrier coating (and / or partially or completely extending through the outer coating, if present), so as to form a kiss cut line.

[0044] Preferably, the front portion of the frame includes a tongue configured to engage with a complementary recess formed in the interior of the lid so that the lid can be securely retained in the closed position.

[0045] Preferably, a pair of slits are formed in the housing, wherein the slits are respectively located on both sides of the hinge and extend parallel to the hinge. In this way, the lid can be moved more easily between the open position and the closed position.

[0046] Preferably, each slit has a length of 5% to 10% of the width of the rear panel of the body, for example 4 mm.

[0047] Preferably, the lid comprises: a front panel; a rear panel; a top panel; a first side panel; and a second side panel, wherein the rear panel of the lid is attached to the rear panel of the body by a hinge, and wherein the ratio of the height of the front panel of the lid to the height of the rear panel of the lid is between 1.8 and 2.2. More preferably, the ratio of the height of the front panel of the lid to the height of the rear panel of the lid is 2. For example, the height of the front panel of the lid can be 30 mm, and the height of the rear panel of the lid can be 15 mm. In this way, the opening area through which the smoking article can be taken out is maximized while ensuring that the lid is not prevented from closing. That is, if the height of the rear panel of the lid is too large, the lid may be prevented from opening or closing, but if the height of the rear panel of the lid is too small, the lid cannot be properly closed after opening for many times, and the possibility of the lid being separated from the body increases. In addition, the larger height of the front panel of the lid is desirable in terms of providing a larger area for accessing the smoking article, but the smaller height of the front panel of the lid is desirable in terms of reducing the angle at which the lid needs to pivot in order to open the packaging box. The above-defined specific ratio provides an optimized balance between these different factors.

[0048] Preferably, when the lid is in the closed position, the ratio of the height of the rear panel of the lid to the height of the housing is between 0.15 and 0.19. More preferably, when the lid is in the closed position, the ratio of the height of the rear panel of the lid to the height of the housing is 0.18. For example, the height of the rear panel of the lid may be 15 mm, and the height of the housing may be 85 mm when the lid is in the closed position.

[0049] Preferably, the ratio of the height of the rear panel of the lid to the width of the top panel of the lid is between 0.29 and 0.71. More preferably, the ratio of the height of the rear panel of the lid to the width of the top panel of the lid is 0.67. For example, the height of the rear panel of the lid can be 15 mm, and the width of the top panel of the lid is 22.5 mm. In this way, the accessibility of the packaging box is further optimized. The technician will understand that the width of the top panel is the distance between the front panel and the rear panel of the lid.

[0050] Preferably, wherein the pouch is made of a material that is configured and sealed to prevent moisture from entering the pouch.

[0051] Preferably, wherein the wrapper forming the pouch is folded and sealed by a first fin seal extending along the length of the front main portion of the pouch, a second fin seal extending along the length of the top secondary portion of the pouch, and a third fin seal extending along the length of the bottom secondary portion of the pouch. The use of a fin seal is advantageous because the smoking article contained in the pouch is not compressed during the sealing of the pouch along the fin seal. In contrast, the use of a lap seal will result in the smoking article contained in the pouch being compressed during the sealing of the pouch along the lap seal.

[0052] Preferably, a tear strip is attached to the inner surface of the pouch and extends through the first fin seal to expose a tear tab to be pulled by a user.

[0053] Preferably, the tear tape is attached to the pouch such that the single layer of tear tape extends through the first fin seal. In this way, the volume of the pouch is reduced.

[0054] Preferably, the shell is a cellulose-based shell. For example, the shell may comprise (or consist of) paper, hemp or formed cellulose pulp. In this way, the environmental impact of the packaging box is further reduced.

[0055] Preferably, the shell, pouch, reinforcing element and / or frame do not comprise plastic film or metal. Specifically, the shell, pouch, reinforcing element and / or frame are not made of a paper laminate comprising plastic film or metal.

[0056] According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a system comprising: a pack according to the first aspect; and a plurality of smoking articles contained within the pouches. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0075] Figures 1A to 1C and FIG. 2A to FIG. 2B Different views of a pack 10 for smoking articles 8 according to the present invention are shown. The pack 10 comprises a housing 12 comprising a body 14 and a lid 16. The lid 16 is hingedly connected to the body 14 by a hinge 30 so that the lid 16 can be moved between an open position and a closed position. Figures 1A to 1CThe lid 16 is shown in the closed position, while FIG. 2A to FIG. 2B The lid 16 is shown in an open position. In the open position, the user can access the contents contained in the shell 12. In the closed position, the contents of the shell 12 are inaccessible, and the body 14 and the lid 16 together define a cubic box. The skilled person will understand that the packaging box 10 or the shell 12 may also be referred to as a hinged lid box.

[0076] The body 14 includes a plurality of panels 18-26, including a front panel 18, a rear panel 20, a bottom panel 22, a first side panel 24 (i.e., a left side panel), and a second side panel 26 (i.e., a right side panel). The panels 18-26 together define a main compartment having an opening 28 opposite the bottom panel 22. The height of the rear panel 20 is greater than the height of the front panel 18, such that the heights of the first side panel 24 and the second side panel 26 increase toward the rear panel 20.

[0077] The lid 16 includes a plurality of panels 72-80, including a front panel 72, a rear panel 74, a top panel 76, a first side panel 78 (i.e., a left side panel), and a second side panel 80 (i.e., a right side panel). The panels 72-80 together define a secondary compartment having an opening opposite to the top panel 76. The height of the front panel 72 is greater than the height of the rear panel 74, so that the heights of the first side panel 78 and the second side panel 80 increase toward the rear panel 74.

[0078] The lid 16 is connected to the body 14 by a hinge 30, which is located between the rear panel 74 of the lid 16 and the rear panel 20 of the body 14. The skilled person will understand that the hinge 30 is not a detachable component of the packaging box 10, but instead is a connecting portion between the rear panel 74 of the lid 16 and the rear panel 20 of the body 14, around which the lid 16 can pivot. That is, the hinge 30 can be described as a fold line or crease line in the shell 12, which is formed by the same material as the body 14 and the lid 16.

[0079] The shell 12 may be made of a cellulose-based material. For example, the shell 12 may include (or consist of) paper, hemp, or molded cellulose pulp.

[0080] Shell 12 is configured to make the ratio of the height A of the front panel 72 of lid 16 and the height B of the rear panel 74 of lid 16 between 1.8 and 2.2. For example, ratio A / B can be 2. Advantageously, this size ratio optimizes the accessibility of pouch 32, and provides a larger opening area, by which the content of shell 12 can be touched, while ensuring that lid can not be blocked and can not move to the closed position. For example, if the height B of the rear panel 74 of lid 16 is too large, lid 16 is prevented from opening or closing, but if the height B of the rear panel 74 of lid 16 is too small, it has been found that lid cannot be properly closed after opening for many times, and lid is more likely to be separated from body. And, the larger height A of the front panel 72 of lid 16 provides for touching the larger area of smoking article, but the smaller height A of the front panel 72 of lid 16 reduces the angle around which lid 16 needs to pivot in order to open packing box 10.

[0081] Shell 12 is further configured so that when lid 16 is in the closed position, the ratio of the height B of the rear panel 74 of lid 16 to the height C of shell 12 is between 0.15 and 0.19. For example, ratio B / C can be 0.18. In addition, shell 12 is configured so that the ratio of the height B of the rear panel 74 of lid 16 to the width D of the top panel 76 of lid 16 is between 0.29 and 0.71. For example, ratio B / D can be 0.67. These ratios further optimize the accessibility of packaging box 10.

[0082] The pouch 32 is housed within the housing 12. Specifically, the pouch 32 is received within the main compartment of the body 14 so that a portion of the pouch 32 protrudes through the opening 28 and is completely contained within the housing 12 when the lid 16 is moved to the closed position. The pouch 32 is sized to store and organize a plurality of smoking articles 8. That is, the height of the pouch 32 is substantially equal to the height of the smoking article 8 so that the smoking article 8 can be securely held within the pouch 32. In one example, the smoking article 8 can be a cigarette. In other examples, the smoking article 8 can be a heat-not-burn stick.

[0083] The pouch 32 is substantially cuboidal and includes a front main portion 110, a rear main portion 112, a top secondary portion 114, a bottom secondary portion 116, a first side portion 118 (ie, a left side portion), and a second side portion 120 (ie, a right side portion). FIG. 4A to FIG. 4C The pouch 32 is shown in more detail in FIG. Figure 4A A schematic diagram of the front main portion 110 of the pouch 32 is shown, Figure 4B A schematic diagram of the first side portion 118 of the pouch 32 is shown, Figure 4C A schematic diagram showing the second side portion 120 is shown, and Figure 4DA schematic diagram of the rear main portion 112 of the pouch 32 is shown.

[0084] The pouch 32 includes a wrapper 122 having a moisture barrier coating 124 formed thereon. Optionally, the wrapper 122 may also have an outer coating 125 formed on the side of the wrapper 122 opposite the moisture barrier coating 124. The wrapper 122 is folded and sealed to form a substantially cuboidal pouch 32 having an outer surface 126 and an inner surface 128. Specifically, the pouch 32 is sealed by a first fin seal 104 extending along the length of the front main portion 110 of the pouch 32, a second fin seal 106 extending along the length of the top minor portion 114 of the pouch 32, and a third fin seal 108 extending along the length of the bottom minor portion of the pouch 32. The skilled person will appreciate that the fin seal is a seal formed by sealing an edge portion of the inner surface 128 of the wrapper 122 to another edge portion of the inner surface 128 of the wrapper 122. In contrast, for example, a lap seal is formed by sealing an edge portion of the inner surface of the wrapper to an edge portion of the outer surface of the wrapper. Advantageously, unlike a lap seal, a fin seal prevents the smoking article 8 contained by the wrapper 122 from being compressed during sealing.

[0085] The tear strip 34 is attached to the pouch 32 and extends around the pouch 32. The tear strip 34 is attached to the inner surface 128 of the pouch 32, but for illustrative purposes, the tear strip 34 is shown in FIG. FIG. 4A to FIG. 4C The skilled person will appreciate that in alternative embodiments, the tear strip 34 may be attached to the outer surface 126 of the pouch 32 .

[0086] The tear tape 34 (also referred to as a tear tape) is a strip of material adhesively coupled to the pouch 32. The tear tape can be pulled by a user to open the pouch 32. Specifically, the tear tape 34 is stronger than the pouch 32, such that when pulled, the pouch 32 is torn open along the length of the tear tape 34. The tear tape 34 can be made of (e.g., oriented) polymers, yarns, and filaments, but is preferably made of a cellulose-based material such as paper.

[0087] As shown, the tear strip 34 extends in a transverse direction around substantially the entire circumference of the pouch 32. That is, the tear strip 34 extends around the front main portion 110, the first side portion 118, the rear main portion 112, and the second side portion 120 of the pouch 32 in a direction perpendicular to the length of the pouch 32. However, in alternative embodiments, the skilled artisan will appreciate that the tear strip 34 may extend around only a portion of the circumference of the pouch 32, such as around at least 90% of the circumference of the pouch 32.

[0088] The tear tape 34 is arranged to extend through the first fin seal 104 of the front main portion 112 of the pouch 32 to expose a tear tab 35 of the tear tape 34 which can be pulled by a user. Advantageously, this improves the ease of manufacturability of the pouch 32. The tear tape 34 can be attached to the pouch 32 so that only a single layer of the tear tape 34 protrudes through the first fin seal 104, thereby reducing the bulk of the pouch 32.

[0089] As in Figure 1A and Figure 1B 10, the bottom edge 36 of the tearing tape 34 is aligned flush with the hinge 30 of the shell 12. In other words, the tearing tape 34 and the hinge 30 are arranged relative to each other so that the bottom edge 36 of the tearing tape 34 is positioned at the vertical height substantially the same as the hinge 30 (that is, at the substantially same position along the length of the packaging box 10). The top edge of the rear panel 20 of the hinge 30 or the main body 14 is therefore located in the same plane as the bottom edge 36 of the tearing tape 34. Like this, when the lid 14 is in the open position, ensure that the tearing tape 34 is not stuck between the pouch 32 and the main body 14 of the shell 12. Therefore, the disassembly ease of the tearing tape 34 is improved, thereby improving the opening ease of the pouch 32. In addition, by positioning the bottom edge 36 of the tear strip 34 flush with the hinge 30, rather than above the hinge 30, the hinge 30 (i.e., the top edge of the rear panel 20 of the body 14) provides a leading edge along which the tear strip 34 can be pulled. This further increases the ease with which the user can open the pouch 32.

[0090] Of course, the skilled person will appreciate that in other embodiments, the bottom edge 36 of the tear tape 34 may not be located at the same height as the hinge 30. For example, the tear tape 34 may be located near and above the hinge 30, for example, the bottom edge of the tear tape may be located 0.5 mm, 1 mm, 1.5 mm, 2 mm, or 3 mm above the hinge, and / or the tear tape 34 may be located above the hinge 30 such that the distance between the bottom edge 36 of the tear tape 34 and the hinge 30 is less than the width of the tear tape 34. This arrangement similarly ensures that the tear tape 34 is accessible to the user.

[0091] It is further preferred that the tear strip 34 is disposed closer to the hinge 30 than the top minor portion 114 of the pouch 32. Advantageously, this configuration reduces the chances of the pouch 32 being torn past the top minor portion 114, and instead promotes clean separation of the pouch 32 around its perimeter.

[0092] A weakening line 64 is formed on the outer surface 126 of the pouch 32. When the user pulls the tear strip 34, the weakening line 64 enables the pouch 32 to be easily torn along the weakening line 64. In one example, the weakening line 64 may include a dent, cut or score line. The weakening line may be formed by laser scoring or mechanical cutting or creasing the wrapper 122. The weakening line 64 partially extends through the wrapper 122 (and / or partially or completely extends through the outer coating 125 (if present)), and does not extend through the moisture-proof coating 124. This form of weakening line may be referred to as a kiss cut line. Advantageously, since the weakening line 64 does not extend all the way through the pouch 32, the pouch 32 remains sealed to the external environment. In another example, the weakening line 64 may include a chemical, radiation or mechanical weakening portion.

[0093] The weakened line 64 is aligned adjacent to the bottom edge 36 of the tear strip 34 such that applying a pulling force to the tear strip 34 causes the pouch 32 to be separated along the weakened line 64. Specifically, the weakened line 64 extends around the pouch 32, for example, extending along the front main portion 110, the first side portion 118, the rear main portion 112, and the second side portion 120 of the pouch 32 perpendicular to the length of the pouch 32. Ideally, the weakened line 64 is flush with the bottom edge 34 of the tear strip 34 and / or the hinge 30. However, if FIG. 4A to FIG. 4C , the tear tape 34 can be slightly lower than the tear tape 34. Specifically, the tear tape 34 can be located at most 3 mm below the bottom edge 36 of the tear tape 34, while allowing the pouch 32 to be reliably opened along the weakened line 64.

[0094] Figure 5A A cross-sectional view of the wrapper 122 and the moisture barrier coating 124 forming the pouch 32 is shown. As shown, the tear strip 34 is attached to the inner surface 128 of the pouch 32 and the weakening line 64 is formed on the outer surface 126 of the pouch. The moisture barrier coating 124 is formed on (or forms) the inner surface 128 of the pouch 32.

[0095] Figure 5B A cross-sectional view of a pouch 32 in an alternative embodiment is shown, wherein the pouch 32 further includes an outer coating 125 formed on a surface of the wrapper 122 opposite the moisture barrier coating 124. That is, the outer coating 125 is formed on (or forms) an outer surface 126 of the pouch 32. The outer coating 125 can be configured to increase the tensile strength of the pouch 32 and / or change the appearance of the pouch 32, such as increasing its opacity. In this example, the weakening line 64 extends completely through the outer coating 125 and partially through the wrapper 122. In an alternative example, the weakening line can extend partially through the outer coating 125.

[0096] The thickness of the pouch 32 (i.e., the wrapper 122 and the moisture barrier coating 124 and optionally the outer coating 125) can be 65 to 85 microns. The density of the pouch 32 (i.e., the wrapper 122 and the moisture barrier coating 124 and optionally the outer coating 125) can be 50 to 92 grams per square meter. For example, the density of the pouch 32 can be 50 to 80 grams per square meter.

[0097] The wrapper 122 is made of a cellulose-based material such as paper, hemp, molded cellulose pulp, virgin fiber pulp, or tobacco dust with paper. The moisture barrier coating 124 prevents moisture from entering through the wrapper 122, thereby protecting the smoking articles 8 contained in the pouch 32. Advantageously, by using a cellulose-based wrapper 122 with a moisture barrier coating 124, as opposed to wrappers containing plastic or metal, the biodegradability and sustainability of the package 10 are improved without compromising the sealing quality.

[0098] In one example, the moisture-proof coating 124 can be a heat-sealable coating or film. In another example, the moisture-proof coating 124 can be a water-based paint. In another example, the moisture-proof coating 124 can be a hot melt adhesive.

[0099] The moisture barrier coating 124 may also reduce or prevent the transfer of oxygen, air, flavoring agents, and / or menthol through the pouch 32 .

[0100] Due to the properties of the fin seal and the moisture barrier coating 124, the pouch 32 (i.e., the wrapper 122, the moisture barrier coating 124, and optionally the outer coating 125) can have a water vapor transmission rate of 0-10 g / m² / day (at 23°C, 50% RH) and an oxygen transmission rate of <10 ccm / mm² / day (at 23°C, 50% RH). For example, the water vapor transmission rate can be 2-10 g / m² / day (at 23°C, 50% RH).

[0101] The wrapper 122, moisture barrier coating 124, and optionally the outer coating 125 (ie, the blank 130 as discussed further below) may be manufactured using flexographic printing or gravure printing.

[0102] Exemplary material specifications for the pouch 32 are provided in the following table:

[0103] supplier Material Description <![CDATA[Basis weight (g / m 2 ).]]> Thickness (µm) <![CDATA[Average water vapor transmission rate at 23°C, 50% RH (g / m 2 / day)]]> Sappi Avantguard S Gloss 90 75 < 1 Sappi Avantguard S Nature 75 67 < 1 Koehler NexPlus Tobacco Flavor 75 82 < 8

[0104] like Figures 1A to 1C As seen in FIG. 1 , the package 10 further includes a frame 92 (which may be referred to as an internal frame) located between the pouch 32 and the body 14 of the housing 12. The frame 92 is a folded element including a front portion 94, a first side portion 96 (i.e., a left side portion), and a second side portion 98 (i.e., a right side portion). Figure 6The frame 92 in the expanded form is shown. The first side 96 and the second side 98 are connected to the opposite sides of the front 94 by respective fold lines. When the package 10 is constructed, the first side 96 and the second side 98 are folded about 90 degrees around their respective fold lines, and the frame 92 is arranged between the pouch 32 and the shell 12, so that the front 94, the first side 96 and the second side 98 of the frame 92 are arranged to be adjacent to (i.e., butted against) each of the front panel 18 of the main body 14 and the front main portion 110 of the pouch 32, the first side panel 24 of the main body 14 and the first side 118 of the pouch 32, and the second side panel 26 of the main body 12 and the second side 120 of the pouch 32.

[0105] Advantageously, the presence of the frame 92 increases the rigidity of the pack 10, thereby providing enhanced protection and support for the smoking articles 8 contained in the pouch 32. In addition, the frame 92 helps to ensure secure closure of the lid 16, for example using the "click lock" function described below.

[0106] As in Figure 1A and Figure 1B In the embodiment of the present invention, the bottom edge 36 of tearing tape 34 is aligned flush with the top edge 100 of the front portion 94 of framework 92 as best shown in FIG. In other words, tearing tape 34 and framework 92 are arranged relative to each other so that the bottom edge 36 of tearing tape 34 is positioned at the vertical height substantially the same as the top edge 100 of the front portion 94 of framework 92 (that is, at the substantially the same position along the length of packing box 10). Therefore the top edge 100 of framework 92 is positioned in the same plane as the bottom edge 36 of tearing tape 34. Like this, when lid 16 is in the open position, guarantee that tearing tape 34 is not stuck between pouch 32 and framework 92. Therefore, the disassembly easiness of tearing tape 34 is improved, thereby the opening easiness of pouch 32 is improved. Additionally, by positioning the bottom edge 36 of the tear strip 34 substantially flush with the top edge 100 of the frame 92, rather than above the top edge 100 of the frame 92, the top edge 100 of the frame 92 provides another guide edge along which the tear strip 34 may be pulled, further enhancing the ease with which the user may open the pouch 32.

[0107] Skilled persons will appreciate that when the hinge 30 , the bottom edge 36 of the tear strip 34 , and the top edge 100 of the frame 92 are all located in the same plane, the tear strip 34 can be reliably pulled around the entire circumference of the pouch 32 without hindrance.

[0108] Of course, the skilled person will also understand that in alternative embodiments, the top edge 100 of the frame 92 may not be exactly flush with the bottom edge 36 of the hinge 30 and / or the tear strip 34. Specifically, it is still advantageous to arrange the frame 92 so that the top edge 100 of the frame 92 is below the tear strip 34, for example, 0.5 mm, 1 mm, 1.5 mm, or 2 mm below the bottom edge 36 of the tear strip 34, because this configuration also ensures that the tear strip 34 is not stuck between the pouch 32 and the frame 92.

[0109] A cutout 102 (also referred to as a recessed portion) is formed on the top edge 100 of the front portion 94 of the frame 92. The cutout 102 is formed by removing a portion of material from the top edge 100 of the front portion 94 of the frame 92. Preferably, the cutout 102 extends a distance of up to 5 mm. For example, the cutout 102 may extend 1 mm, 1.5 mm, 2 mm, 2.5 mm, or 3 mm below the top edge 100 of the frame 92.

[0110] The cutout 102 is centrally located along the top edge 100 of the front portion 94 of the frame 92 , and preferably has a width of at least 50% of the width of the front portion 94 of the frame 92 .

[0111] Advantageously, the presence of the cutouts 102 improves accessibility to the smoking articles 8 contained in the pouch 32 when the pouch 32 is open, without adversely affecting the reinforcement provided by the frame 92 .

[0112] The front portion 94 of the frame 92 further includes a tongue 66, which may also be referred to as a tab, which is arranged to protrude away from the surface of the front portion 94 of the frame 92. A complementary recess 68 is provided on the front panel 72 of the lid 16 within the secondary compartment of the lid 16. When the lid 16 is in the closed position, the tongue 66 is configured to engage with the recess 68 so that the lid 16 is held in the closed position. A threshold force applied by the user is required to disengage the tongue 66 from the recess 68 so that the lid 16 moves to the open position. This may be referred to as a "click lock" mechanism.

[0113] The first side 96 and the second side 98 of the frame 92 are shaped so as not to block the lid 16 from moving to the closed position. Specifically, the first side 96 and the second side 98 have upper edges that slope downward (e.g., curve downward) from the top edge 100 of the front portion 94 of the frame 92. This means that when the lid 16 is moved to the closed position, the lid will not hit the first side 96 and the second side 98 of the frame 92. Of course, the skilled person will understand that Figure 8 The particular shape of the frame 92 shown in FIG. 9 is not required and can be varied. For example, the first side 96 and the second side 98 of the frame 92 can have a flat upper edge.

[0114] The frame 92 may be made of a cellulose-based material such as paper, hemp or molded cellulose pulp. Advantageously, the frame 92 may have a higher stiffness than the pouch 32. For example, the frame 92 may have a density of 130 to 200 g / m2.

[0115] FIG. 3A to FIG. 3C The pouch 32 is shown in an open state in which the tear strip 34 has been pulled to remove the top section 38 of the pouch 32 from the bottom section 40 of the pouch 32, thereby exposing the smoking article 8 contained within the pouch 32. For ease of illustration, FIG. 3A to FIG. 3C The previous Figures 1A to 1C The reference numerals of the features marked in .

[0116] The reinforcement element 82 is located between the pouch 32 and the smoking article 8 contained within the pouch 32. When the pouch 32 is opened, the reinforcement element 82 is exposed.

[0117] The reinforcement element 82 is a folded element including a front portion 84 , a first side portion 88 (ie, a left side portion), and a second side portion 90 (ie, a right side portion). Figure 7 Shown is a reinforcing element 82 in an expanded form. A first side 88 and a second side 90 are connected to the opposite side of a front portion 84 by respective fold lines. When the packing box 10 is constructed, the first side 88 and the second side 90 are folded about 90 degrees around respective fold lines, and the reinforcing element 82 is arranged between the pouch 32 and the smoking article 8, so that the front portion 84, the first side 88 and the second side 90 of the reinforcing element 82 are arranged to be adjacent (that is, butted with) to the front main portion 110 of the pouch 32, the first side 118 of the pouch 32, and the second side 120 of the pouch 32, respectively.

[0118] Advantageously, the presence of the reinforcement element 82 further increases the rigidity of the pack 10, thereby further enhancing the protection and support of the smoking articles 8 contained in the pouch 32, whilst ensuring that the tear strip 34 remains accessible to the user.

[0119] The height of the reinforcing element 82, in particular the height of the first side portion 88 and the second side portion 90 of the reinforcing element 82, is equal to the height of the pouch 32. This arrangement provides optimal protection and support for the smoking article 8 contained in the pouch 32.

[0120] The reinforcing element 82 has a top edge 85 on which a cutout 86 is formed. That is, a portion of material is removed along the top edge 85 of the front portion 84 of the reinforcing element 82 to form the cutout 86, which can also be referred to as a recessed portion.

[0121] The cutout 86 extends below the bottom edge 36 of the tear strip 34 and / or the weakened line 64. Thus, when the tear strip 34 is pulled to open the pouch 32, the smoking article 8 is additionally exposed through the cutout 86, thereby allowing the user to easily grab and take out the smoking article 8. Preferably, the cutout 86 extends below the top edge 85 of the reinforcing element 82 to a distance of 10% to 30% of the height of the front portion 84 of the reinforcing element 82. For example, the cutout may extend 10 mm, 11 mm, 12 mm, 13 mm, 14 mm, or 15 mm below the top edge 85 of the reinforcing element 82.

[0122] The cutout 86 is centrally located along the top edge 85 of the front portion 84 of the reinforcement element 82, thereby providing optimal access to the smoking article 8. The width of the cutout 86 may be at least 50% of the width of the front portion 84 of the reinforcement element 82.

[0123] The reinforcing element 82 may be made of a cellulose-based material such as paper, hemp or molded cellulose pulp. Advantageously, the stiffness of the reinforcing element 82 may be higher than the stiffness of the pouch 32. For example, the reinforcing element 82 may have a density of 130 to 200 g / m2.

[0124] The pouch 32 may be formed from a blank 130 that includes a wrapper 122 and a moisture barrier coating 124 (and in some embodiments, an outer coating 125). Figure 8 A blank 130 is shown in FIG.

[0125] The blank 130 includes a plurality of panels 136-152 separated by fold lines. The plurality of panels 136-152 include a blank first front panel 132 and a blank second front panel 134 for cooperatively forming the front main portion 110 of the pouch 32. The plurality of panels 136-152 further include a blank rear panel 136 for forming the rear main portion 112 of the pouch. The plurality of panels 136-152 further include a blank first top panel 138, a blank second top panel 140, and a blank third top panel 142 for cooperatively forming the top secondary portion 114 of the pouch 32. The plurality of panels 136-152 further include a blank first bottom panel 144, a blank second bottom panel 146, and a blank third bottom panel 148 for cooperatively forming the bottom secondary portion 116 of the pouch 32. The plurality of panels 136 - 152 further includes a blank first side panel 150 and a blank second side panel 152 for forming the first side portion 118 and the second side portion of the pouch 32 , respectively.

[0126] The blank 130 includes first and second longitudinal fin tabs 154 , 156 , top and bottom transverse fin tabs 158 , 160 that form boundaries (ie, edge portions) of the blank 130 .

[0127] The blank 130 (and therefore the panels 136-152 and the tabs 154-160) can be described as having two surfaces: an outer surface and an opposite inner surface. When formed, the outer surface 126 of the pouch 32 corresponds to the outer surface of the blank 130, and the inner surface 128 of the pouch 32 corresponds to the inner surface of the blank 130. The moisture barrier coating 124 is formed on the inner surface of the blank 130, and the outer coating 125 is optionally formed on the outer surface of the blank 130.

[0128] The tear tape 34 is attached to the inner surface of the blank 130 and extends in a straight line across the second longitudinal fin tab 156, the blank first front panel 132, the blank second side panel 152, the blank back panel 136, the blank first side panel 150, the blank front panel 134, and the first longitudinal fin tab 154. Alternatively, the tear tape 34 may extend over only one of the first longitudinal fin tab 154 and the second longitudinal fin tab 156. In this way, when the pouch 32 is constructed, only a single layer of the tear tape 34 extends through the first fin seal 104, thereby reducing the volume of the bag 32.

[0129] The line of weakness 64 is formed on the outer surface of the blank 130 and extends parallel to and adjacent to the bottom edge 36 of the tear strip 36 as previously described.

[0130] To form the pouch 32 from the blank 130, each of the panels 136-152 and the tabs 154-160 is folded around respective fold lines that connect the panels and tabs to the other panels 136-152 and tabs 154-160 of the blank 130. Each of the panels 136-152 and the tabs 154-160 is folded about 90 degrees around respective fold lines. The first longitudinal fin tab 154 is sealed to the second longitudinal fin tab 156 along the inner surface, thereby forming the first fin seal 104. The top transverse fin tab 158 is sealed to itself along the inner surface, thereby forming the second fin seal 106. The bottom transverse fin tab 160 is sealed to itself along the inner surface, thereby forming the third fin seal 108. Each fin seal 104-108 can be sealed using a suitable adhesive. In this way, the pouch 32 is effectively sealed from the external environment. The smoking articles 8 may be provided into the pouch 32 either before or during the folding and sealing process.

[0131] like FIG. 4A to FIG. 4C , in the assembled pouch 32, the first fin seal 104, the second fin seal 106, and the third fin seal 108 are folded against (e.g., arranged to lie substantially flat against) the front main portion 110, the top minor portion 114, and the bottom minor portion 116 of the pouch 32, respectively. The first fin seal 104 is folded against the front main portion 110 before the second fin seal 106 and the third fin seal 108 are sealed.

[0132] The skilled person will appreciate that once the pouch 32 has been formed from the blank 130, the tear tab 35 of the tear strip 34 is arranged to protrude through the first fin seal 104 so that it can be pulled by a user.
