Description

[0001] Related Applications

[0002] Pursuant to 35 U.S.C. §119(e), this application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 63 / 527,767, filed on July 19, 2023 (titled “FAN”), the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference. Technical Field

[0003] The present invention relates to a fan, and in particular to a portable fan that pivots about a support arm and includes an oscillating function, allowing flexible and efficient air circulation in a variety of settings. Background Art

[0004] Conventional portable fans have been widely used to provide cooling and improved air circulation in a variety of indoor and outdoor spaces. These conventional fans generally consist of a fan head fixedly mounted to a base, which can provide limited adjustability and directional control.

[0005] To address some of the limitations of traditional fans, some designs have introduced pivoting mechanisms that allow the fan head to be tilted vertically or swivel to different angles relative to the ground. Although these designs provide improved directional airflow, they are often constrained by being fixed to a base, limiting their ability to effectively cover a wider area.

[0006] In addition, oscillating mechanisms have been introduced into some fans, particularly tower fans, to achieve a sweeping motion, allowing the fan head to move horizontally back and forth relative to the ground, thereby circulating air horizontally over a larger area. However, these oscillating mechanisms are generally limited to oscillating motion and cannot pivot vertically up and down.

[0007] Additionally, such conventional fans utilizing a pivoting or oscillating mechanism typically include more material, thereby increasing the overall weight of the fan, which reduces the portability of the fan and increases the risk of generating more noise from the additional material.

[0008] In view of the above, such conventional fans cannot provide the advantages of combining vertical pivoting and horizontal swinging functions while minimizing material usage. Therefore, there is a need for an innovative portable fan design that allows enhanced directional control through pivoting and swinging functions without affecting the weight and portability of the fan. Summary of the invention

[0009] A fan is provided, comprising a base, a plate operatively attached to the base, a fan head housing, and a support arm attaching the fan head housing to the plate. The plate swings relative to the base by a swing mechanism. The fan head housing includes a blower assembly having a motor for rotating at least one blade to generate airflow. The fan head housing is pivotally attached to the support arm at one end, and the plate is fixedly attached to the support arm at the other end. The fan head housing pivots relative to the support arm along the vertical y-axis of the fan and swings relative to the base along the horizontal x-axis of the fan.

[0010] In another example, the fan of the present invention includes a base, a fan head housing and a support arm, the fan head housing includes a blower assembly, the blower assembly has a motor for rotating blades to generate airflow, and the support arm has a first end and a second end. The first end of the support arm is pivotally attached to the fan head housing, and the second end of the support arm is attached to the base. In this example, the fan head housing is cantilevered by the support arm. In other words, there is only one attachment point to attach the fan head housing to the base. This structure reduces material use, thereby limiting the weight of the fan, enhancing its portability and limiting noise.

[0011] In another example, the fan of the present invention includes a base, a plate operatively attached to the base, a fan head housing, and a support arm attaching the fan head housing to the plate. The plate swings relative to the base by a swing mechanism. The fan head housing includes a blower assembly having a motor for rotating blades to generate airflow. The fan head housing is pivotally attached to the support arm at one end of the support arm and is suspended by the support arm. The plate is fixedly attached to the support arm at the other end of the support arm. The swing mechanism includes a second motor, a drive gear driven by the second motor, and a curved rack engaged with the drive gear. The second motor and the drive gear are attached to the plate, and the curved rack is attached to the base. In operation, the second motor moves the drive gear in a curved translation back and forth along the arc of the curved rack to generate a swinging motion.

[0026] In addition, in this application, the terms "substantially", "approximately" or "approximately" when modifying a specified numerical value may be considered to include a range of values that includes + / -10% of such numerical value. In addition, terms such as "communication" and "communication with" or "interface" or "interface with" (e.g., a first component "communicates" or "communicates" with a second component) are used herein to represent a structural, functional, mechanical, electrical, signal, optical, magnetic, electromagnetic, ionic or fluid relationship between two or more components or elements. Therefore, the fact that a component is said to communicate with or interface with a second component does not exclude that additional components may exist between and / or be operatively associated or engaged with the first component and the second component.

[0027] For purposes of reference and description, the fan 100 of the present invention is considered to have a horizontal x-axis (x), a vertical y-axis (y), and a width z-axis (z). Figure 1 As shown, the components of fan 100 are relatively positioned along this axis. Terms such as "axial" and "axially" are assumed to refer to the respective axis or any direction or axis parallel to the device axis unless otherwise specified or the context requires otherwise. For convenience, movement relative to the device axis may alternatively include movement relative to the device axis. Figure 1 Unless the context indicates otherwise, linear translation "along device axis z" is not limited to translation directly on the device axis (coincident with the device axis), but also includes translation parallel to the device axis z, depending on the context. Similarly, rotation "about device axis y" also includes rotation about an axis parallel to the device axis y, depending on the context.

[0028] In addition, the fan of the present invention also has a height (h), a length (l) and a width (w), and in particular Figure 1 shown.

[0029] As shown and discussed below, an example of a fan that pivots and oscillates is provided. In the example, the fan is a portable, stand-alone fan. "Portable" is defined as having the ability to be easily carried or moved. "Stand-alone" is defined as having the ability to remain stable and upright without external constraints. It should also be understood that the term "fan" can be used interchangeably with the term "blower," "air circulator," or any other term referring to a device that generates airflow for cooling and / or heating.

[0030] As will be shown and discussed in detail below, the fan of the present invention includes a combination of a pivot mechanism and a swing mechanism. The pivot mechanism allows the fan head to pivot relative to the support arm along the vertical axis or y-axis of the fan, and the swing mechanism allows the fan head to swing horizontally relative to the fan base along the horizontal axis or x-axis. This combination allows multi-functional adjustment and directional control.

[0031] like Figure 1-11 As shown in FIG. 1 , an example of a fan 100 of the present invention is shown. Figure 1 As shown, the fan 100 includes a fan head or fan head housing 102 connected to a base 104 via a support arm 106. The fan head housing 102 includes a rear housing 112 positioned at the rear of the head housing 102, a shroud 114 positioned at the front of the head housing 102, and a grille 116 positioned within the shroud 114. The fan 100 includes at least blades 902 and a motor 904 for rotating the blades (see Fig. 9 ) is positioned within the interior space of the head housing 102. The base 104 is defined by the portion of the fan 100 that supports the head housing 102 above a support surface. The base can include at least a plate 108.

[0032] One side of the head housing 102, namely the rear housing 112, is pivotally or rotatably attached or connected to the support arm 106 at the pivot joint 110. By positioning the support arm 102 so that it is attached to one side of the fan head housing 102 (rather than the front or rear of the fan head housing), the range of pivotal movement of the fan head housing 102 can be extended so that it can pivot relative to the support arm 106 between a range of 0 and 180 degrees or 0 and 360 degrees. It should be understood that although the support arm 106 is shown attached only to the right side of the head housing 102, other examples of the present invention may have the support arm 106 attached or connected only to the left side of the head housing 102.

[0033] The important feature of the portable fan 100 of the present invention is that only one support arm 106 is included for supporting the fan head housing 102. As shown in the figure, the support arm 106 supports the fan head housing 102 on one side thereof (the fan head), while the other side of the fan head is free, or not attached or connected to any supporting structure. In other words, the fan head housing 102 of the present invention is cantilevered by the support arm 106. Cantilever is a well-known term in the art, and is a rigid structural element supported only at one end. Conventional fans usually include at least two arms or at least two attachment points for supporting the fan head or the fan head housing. By using only one support arm 106 or only one attachment point, and cantilevering the fan head housing 102 on the support arm 106, the material consumption is greatly reduced, thereby limiting the weight, which is particularly important for fans that increase weight due to the inclusion of pivoting and swinging mechanism components (which will be discussed in detail below). At least for the following reasons, integrating only the support arm 106 in the fan 100 provides several significant advantages, resulting in lighter weight and less noise for cooling or blowing equipment.

[0034] First, the support arm 106 optimizes the use of materials, resulting in a more efficient use of resources. By using a single support arm 106 attached to the fan head housing 102, the need for additional materials is minimized, thereby reducing the overall weight of the fan 100. This not only enhances the portability of the fan 100, but also makes it easier for the user to transport and position the fan 100 as needed.

[0035] Secondly, the support arm 106 acts as a strong and stable structural member, effectively supporting the fan head housing 102 during operation. This design reduces the undesirable vibrations that may occur in traditional fan structures containing more materials (especially fans using double support arms or multiple support arms or connection points), resulting in quieter fan operation. The reduced noise level is a significant advantage, especially in environments such as offices, bedrooms and / or libraries where low noise emissions are required.

[0036] Third, the portable nature of the support arm 106 allows the user to effortlessly adjust the position and airflow direction of the fan 100. Whether at home, in the workplace or outdoors, the user can conveniently adjust the position of the fan 100 according to their preferences without any effort or excessive force.

[0037] Fourth, the support arm 106 adopts a streamlined and simple design, with a compact structure and elegant appearance. The fan's 100 stylish appearance and small footprint make it an ideal cooling solution for spaces with limited floor space.

[0038] One end of the support arm 106 is pivotally attached to the fan head housing 102 via a pivot joint, while the other end 124 of the support arm 106 can be fixedly attached to the base 104 via a plate 108, which swings or rotates relative to the base 104 via a swing or rotation mechanism. As shown, the plate 108 can be concentrically positioned relative to the base 104. In other words, the plate 108 and the base 104 can share the same center or central axis. As further shown, the periphery or circumference of the plate 108 is shorter or smaller than the periphery or circumference of the base 104. In other words, the circumference of the base 104 extends further than the circumference of the swinging plate 108. This structure allows the base 104 to cover a larger surface area, thereby providing greater stability and balance for the fan 100.

[0039] At least Figure 1As further shown, a control device may also be provided on the fan 100. In particular, the base may house one or more control devices 120, such as a printed circuit board, for controlling the operation of the fan 100, including but not limited to blade speed, swing, and power. A power cord 122 may be further connected to the base 104 to provide power to the fan 100 from an external power source (e.g., an electrical outlet). In other examples, the fan 100 may be wireless and may include its own power source, including but not limited to batteries or rechargeable batteries.

[0040] In other examples, the fan 100 may be controlled by a remote controller device 118. The remote controller 118 may have a fixing mechanism for removably attaching to any location on the fan 100, including but not limited to Figure 1 . The remote controller 118 can be secured to the fan 100 by any securing mechanism known in the art, including but not limited to a friction fit, a clamp, a magnet (or any ferromagnetic material), or any combination thereof. Similar to the control device 120, the remote controller 118 can at least control the switching power of the fan 100, control the fan speed setting, and control the swinging motion. The remote controller 118 can include an electronic circuit including a transmitter and / or a transceiver for communicating with the fan 100 it controls. The remote controller 118 can also include a reusable or rechargeable battery.

[0041] As described above, the head housing 102 further defines an interior space in which a blower assembly including at least blades 902 and a motor 904 is located. The blower assembly is used to move air through the air inlet 202 (at least Figure 2 The air inlet 202 may include a plurality of air inlet holes. Figure 2 As further shown, the air inlet 202 may be disposed on the rear housing 112 .

[0042] The pivot joint 110 allows the fan head 102 to pivot relative to the support arm 106. The pivot joint 110 may allow a user to manually adjust the pivot angle of the fan head housing 102, and may include a fixing mechanism including, but not limited to, a friction fit, a magnet (or any ferromagnetic material), a clamp, or any combination thereof, to position the fan head 102 relative to the support arm 106 about the pivot joint 110. As described above, the fan head housing 102 may pivot along the y-axis or height of the fan 100. In other words, the axis of rotation of the pivot joint 110 intersects the y-axis of the fan 100, but not the x-axis or z-axis of the fan 100. This pivot mechanism of the fan head housing 102 relative to the support arm 106 allows for an adjustable vertical airflow along the height of the fan 100 or the vertical y-axis of the fan. In other words, the angle of the fan head housing 102 may be pivotally adjusted relative to the support arm 106 to adjust the vertical airflow of the airflow. While this example shows that the pivot joint 110 requires manual engagement, in other examples, the pivot joint 110 may include a motor for electrically pivoting the fan head housing 102 relative to the support arm 106 , which may be controlled by the control device 120 and / or the remote controller 118 .

[0043] Now refer to Fig. 9 , showing a cross-sectional view of the fan 100, showing the main components. As shown, the head housing 102 includes at least a shroud 114 connected to the rear housing 112. A blower assembly including at least a blade 902 connected to a motor 904 is positioned within the interior space of the head housing 102. A fan grille 116 can be positioned in front of the blade 902. In operation, the motor 904 rotates the blade 902 (which may include more than one blade) via the motor output shaft. This rotation of the blade 902 generates an airflow that flows through the fan grille 116. The motor 904 can also be equipped with a capacitor 906.

[0044] The head housing 102 is pivotally connected to the support arm 106. The support arm 106 may include a left housing 908 and a right housing 910. One end of the support arm 106 is connected to the head housing 102 via a pivot joint 110, while the opposite end of the support arm 106 is fixedly attached or connected to the plate 108. A bearing 912 is positioned below the plate 108 to allow the plate 108 to rotate or move relative to the base 104. The plate 108 can be connected to a drive gear 916 driven by a motor 914. As will be discussed in further detail below, the drive gear 916 can engage with a rack 918 connected to the base 104 to allow the plate 108 to rotate or swing relative to the base 104. A base bottom plate 922 is positioned below the base 104 to provide additional grip to the support surface.

[0045] In addition, a printed circuit board (PCB) 120 can communicate with a control device 120. The printed circuit board 120 can further communicate with a remote controller 118 for remotely controlling fan settings. The printed circuit board 120 can include an integrated circuit, a processor, and / or a controller that communicates with a power source (not shown). The printed circuit board can also communicate with the motor 904 and / or the motor 914 to control the operation of the motor 206 and / or the motor 914.

[0046] Figure 10-11 A view showing the swing mechanism of the fan 100 that allows the plate 108 to rotate or swing relative to the base 104. In particular, Fig.10 An internal view of the fan 100 is shown with the plate 108 removed; Fig.11 Another internal view of the fan 100 is shown with the plate 108, support arm 106, and fan head housing 102 removed. As shown, the swing mechanism can be positioned within the base 104. The swing mechanism can include at least a motor 914, a drive gear 916, and a rack 918. In one example, the motor 914 can be a stepper motor.

[0047] The motor 914 and the drive gear 916 are attached to the plate 108 so that the plate 108 moves as the motor 914 and the drive gear 916 move. The motor 914 is connected to the drive gear 916 so that the motor 914 mechanically moves or rotates the drive gear 916 via the motor shaft. The teeth of the drive gear 916 mesh or engage with the teeth of the rack 918 so that the drive gear 916 translates along the teeth of the rack 918. The rack 918 is attached to the base 104. The rack 918 can be a curved rack.

[0048] In operation, the motor 914 rotates the drive gear 916, causing it to move along the arc of the rack 918, thereby causing the plate 108 to move, rotate, or oscillate relative to the base 104. In other words, the rack drive gear 916 and the rack 918 form a gear set that converts the rotational motion of the drive gear 916 into a curvilinear translation along the arc of the rack 918. The motor 914 can move the drive gear 916 in a manner that translates back and forth in a curvilinear translation (i.e., oscillates) along the arc of the curved rack 918.

[0049] It should also be understood that while the arc of the rack 918 is shown to limit the degree of swing to a maximum of 90 degrees, the arc length of the rack 918 can be extended to 180 degrees or any length between 0 and 360 degrees without departing from the scope of the present invention. Therefore, the swing mechanism of the present invention can allow the plate 108 and the fan head housing 102 to swing relative to the base 104 within any degree range between 0 and 90 degrees, 0 and 180 degrees, or 0 and 360 degrees.

[0050] The swing mechanism of the present invention allows the fan header housing 102 to move, swivel or swing along the x-axis of the fan 100 or along the width / length of the fan 100. In other words, the rotation axis of the plate 108 intersects the x-axis or z-axis of the fan 100, but does not intersect the y-axis of the fan 100. This swing mechanism of the fan header housing 102 relative to the base 104 allows the airflow to be directed across a larger area laterally or along the width / length direction of the fan 100.

[0051] The sensor 920 (such as an optical sensor) can also communicate or communicate signals with the motor 914 to control the direction of rotation of the drive gear 916, so that the drive gear 916 rotates clockwise and counterclockwise so as to move back and forth on the rack 918 to produce a gyratory or swinging motion. In other words, when the drive gear 916 has reached the end of the rack 918, the sensor 920 can provide a signal to the motor 914 to rotate in the opposite direction. In this way, the drive gear 916 and therefore the plate 108 and the fan head housing 102 can continue to swing or move between the two ends of the arc of the rack 918.
