Description

Technical Field

[0001] The present disclosure relates to a topical skin care lotion composition that may contain a relatively high level of glycerin and two or more emollients. The present disclosure also relates to methods of using such topical skin care compositions to soothe irritated skin; relieve itchy, dry, irritated skin; and moisturize to soften skin. Background Art

[0002] The skin may become itchy, red, flaky, dry, cracked, scaly, tight, irritated, and / or rough. These skin conditions may be caused by eczema, psoriasis, and / or xerosis. The etiology of these conditions may be multifactorial and may be a response to changes in the environment (e.g., cold weather or immune triggers, such as allergen responses), underlying diseases, medications, and / or age. Such skin conditions may be acute in nature (i.e., occurring with a single, isolated incidence) or more chronic (i.e., affecting an individual over a long period of time). When symptoms of unhealthy skin occur, people experiencing the condition typically wish to relieve the symptoms as quickly as possible.

[0003] Topical moisturizers can be used to treat challenged, dry and / or irritated skin, and the most effective moisturizers can have relatively high levels of glycerol and / or emollients. However, the use of high levels of glycerol and / or emollients can result in a compromise between a pleasant skin feel and the feeling of heaviness and / or stickiness of many effective moisturizers, which is usually not preferred by consumers. On the contrary, consumers want efficient and silky moisturizers that seem to be absorbed quickly into the skin. It may also be difficult to emulsify compositions containing high levels of glycerol and / or emollients, resulting in phase instability, which can be manifested as, but not limited to, an oil layer separated from the moisturizer.

[0004] Therefore, there is a need for a topical skin care product containing relatively high levels of glycerin and / or emollients which is phase stable and has low viscosity. Summary of the invention

[0006] A skin care composition, the skin care composition comprising: (a) a continuous phase, the continuous phase comprising: (i) about 55% to about 85% by weight of water; (ii) about 5% to about 12% by weight of glycerin; (b) a dispersed phase, the dispersed phase comprising: (i) about 1% to about 15% by weight of at least two waxy emollients, the at least two waxy emollients selected from cetyl alcohol, glyceryl stearate, petrolatum, shea butter or mixtures thereof; (ii) about 3% to about 10% by weight of a liquid emollient selected from dimethicone, isopropyl isostearate or mixtures thereof; (a) about 0.1% to about 3% by weight of colloidal oatmeal; (b) about 0.1% to about 2% by weight of an emulsifier, the emulsifier comprising cetearyl olivate and sorbitan olivate. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0007] While the specification concludes with claims particularly pointing out and distinctly claiming the subject matter of the invention, it is believed the invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein:

[0008] Figure 1 is a graph showing the viscosity of skin care compositions containing an emollient containing either isohexadecene or triheptanoin and different emulsifiers.

[0009] Figure 2 is a graph of adhesion versus time for Examples G-2 and H-2.

[0010] Figure 3 is a graph showing the viscosity of skin care compositions H-1 and H-2.

[0011] Figure 4 Shows the setup of the adhesion method DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0012] It has been discovered that topical skin care compositions containing relatively high levels of glycerin (e.g., from about 6.5% to about 18%) and at least two emollients and an emulsifier comprising cetearyl olivate and sorbitan olivate can be phase stable and can effectively treat problem, dry and / or irritated skin while also having a consumer preferred silky texture that appears to absorb quickly into the skin and does not feel too heavy. Aesthetic properties and in some cases efficacy can be further improved by adding silicones, starches and / or colloidal oats to the skin care compositions.

[0013] Emollients can soften, moisturize and / or protect the skin from irritation, as well as aid in the solubilization of various skin care benefit ingredients. However, emollients can have a range of polarities, which can make it difficult to select an effective emulsifier.

[0014] In addition, it may be advantageous for the emulsifier to be effective because the emulsifier is typically used at a minimum level that provides the desired product viscosity and stability to obtain optimal product performance. If the emulsifier is only effective when used at a relatively high level, the product may be difficult to spread, and instead of being absorbed into the skin, the product may remain on top of the skin as a white layer. In these cases, the product may also feel heavy and / or sticky. In addition, it is preferred to use an emulsifier that further does not increase the undesirable skin feel after application by imparting a waxy, heavy and / or coated skin feel.

[0015] Adhesion usually refers to the peak force required for separating an object from the composition after contacting the composition. At least some users associate good moisturizing with high adhesion, especially during and / or shortly after application of the product (e.g., less than 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 or even less than 1 minute after application). However, the increase in adhesion is usually accompanied by an increase in viscosity, and the moisturizing agent feels heavy on the top of the user's skin. Although the user can tolerate or even expect to have some stickiness and / or heaviness as a signal of moisturizing during and / or after application, it may not be expected that stickiness continues for example more than 1, 5, 7, 10 or even more than 20 minutes after application of the product.

[0016] The composition may have an average adhesion of less than 750 g between 20 minutes and 40 minutes, alternatively less than 725 g, alternatively less than 710 g, and alternatively less than 705 g. The composition may have an average adhesion of about 250 g to about 750 g between 20 minutes and 40 minutes, alternatively about 400 g to about 725 g, alternatively about 500 g to about 710 g, and alternatively about 550 g to about 705 g.

[0017] The composition may be opaque. The composition may have a percent transparency (% T) of less than 70%, alternatively less than 60%, alternatively less than 50%, alternatively less than 40%, alternatively less than 30%, alternatively less than 20%, alternatively less than 10%, alternatively less than 5%, according to the transmittance at 600 nm as described below by the % Transmittance Method.

[0018] In addition, the composition can be a physically stable emulsion. The composition is physically stable if there is no phase separation or less than a 40% change in viscosity by visual inspection when stored in a finger-tightly closed glass jar between t=0 (i.e., immediately after preparation of the composition) and between freeze-thaw cycles, wherein the sample is kept at -18°C for 24 hours and then returned to room temperature, or stored at 40°C for one month and then returned to room temperature. As used herein, "visual inspection" means that a human observer can visually discern whether the product separates into two distinct layers in a 2 ounce clear glass jar with the naked eye (except for standard corrective lenses suitable for correcting myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism or other corrective vision) under lighting at least equal to the illumination of a standard 100-watt incandescent bulb at 30 cm.

The Brookfield viscosity may be measured by the Brookfield viscosity test method described below.

[0036] Emulsifier

[0037] The skin care composition may contain an emulsifier. Preferred emulsifiers can facilitate the formation of emulsions, stabilize the composition, and can thicken the skin care composition together with the polymer.

[0038] The skin care composition may contain from about 0.10% to about 2%, alternatively from about 0.2% to about 1.5%, alternatively from about 0.4% to about 1.2%, and alternatively from about 0.6% to about 0.8% of an emulsifier. The phrase "dermatologically acceptable carrier" means that the carrier is suitable for topical application to keratinous tissue, has good aesthetic properties, is compatible with the active substances in the composition, and does not raise any unreasonable safety or toxicity issues. The carrier may be present at a level of about 50% to about 95%, about 52% to about 90%, about 55% to about 85%, alternatively about 60% to about 80% by weight of the composition.

[0045] The carrier can be in various forms. Wetting agents have affinity for hydrogen bonds of water molecules and hydrophilic groups of the skin, and therefore combine themselves with internal water molecules and skin molecules to keep water on the outer surface and upper layer of the stratum corneum, thereby increasing the overall content in the skin itself. The topical application of a cosmetic product comprising a wetting agent (e.g., glycerol) may be associated with an improvement in barrier function, an increase in epidermal thickness, and an improvement in overall skin appearance.

[0068] The topical skin care composition may include a humectant selected from the group consisting of sugars and sugar alcohols, polyols, amino acids and their derivatives such as proline and aspartic acid arginine, 1,3-butylene glycol, propylene glycol and water, as well as pine algae extract, collagen amino acids or peptides, creatinine, diglycerin, biosaccharide gum-1, glucosamine salts, glucuronates, glutamates, polyethylene glycol ethers of glycerol (e.g., glycereth 20), glycerol, glycerol monopropoxylate, glycogen, hexylene glycol, honey and its extracts or derivatives, hydrogenated starch hydrolysate, hydrolyzed mucopolysaccharides, inositol, keratin amino acids, glycosaminoglycans, methoxy PEG-10, methyl gluceth-10, methyl gluceth-20, methyl glucose, 3-methyl-1,3-butylene glycol, N-acetyl Glucosamine salts, polyethylene glycol and its derivatives (such as PEG-15 butylene glycol, PEG-4, PEG-5 pentaerythritol, PEG-6, PEG-8, PEG-9), pentaerythritol, 1,2-pentanediol, PPG-1 glyceryl ether, PPG-9, 2-pyrrolidone-5-carboxylic acid and its salts (such as glycerol pca), sugar isomerate, serine, serine amino acid, sodium acetylated hyaluronate, sodium hyaluronate, sodium polyaspartate, sodium polyglutamate, sorbitan polyether 20, sorbitan polyether 6, sugars and sugar alcohols and their derivatives such as glucose, mannose and polyglycerol sorbitol, trehalose, trehalose dihydrate, triglycerol, trimethylolpropane, tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane salt and yeast extract, and mixtures thereof.

[0078] Thickener

[0079] The continuous phase and / or the dispersed phase may include one or more thickeners. The thickener may include a natural gum, a cellulosic thickener, or a combination thereof.

[0080] Natural gums are polysaccharides of natural origin that can cause an increase in viscosity in a solution even at low concentrations. They can be used as thickeners, gelling agents, stabilizers, and can help keep emulsions more stable. These gums are most commonly found in the woody elements of plants or in seed coatings. Natural gums can be classified according to their origin. They can be classified as uncharged polymers or ionic polymers (polyelectrolytes), examples of which include the following: natural gums obtained from seaweed, such as agar; alginic acid; sodium alginate; and carrageenan. Natural gums obtained from non-marine plant resources include: gum arabic, from the sap of the Acacia tree; gum ghatti, from the sap of the Anogeissus tree; gum tragacanth, from the sap of the Astragalus shrub; gum karaya, from the sap of the Sterculia tree. Examples of uncharged gums include: guar gum, from guar beans; locust bean gum, from the seeds of the carob tree; beta-glucan, from oat or barley bran; chicle, an older base for chewing gum obtained from the chicle tree; dammargum, from the sap of a tree in the Dipterocarpaceae family; glucomannan, from the konjac plant; mastic gum, a chewing gum from ancient Greece obtained from the mastic tree; psyllium husk, from the Plantago plant; spruce gum, an Indiana, U.S. chewing gum obtained from spruce trees; tara gum, from the seeds of the tara tree. [0082] Touch adjustment particles

[0083] The continuous phase and / or the dispersed phase may include one or more feel-adjusting particles. The topical skin care composition may include 0.001% to 25% (e.g., 0.01% to 20%, 0.05% to 15%, 0.1% to 10%, or even 0.2% to 5%) by weight of the feel-adjusting particles. For example, the composition may include spherical or non-spherical particles having an average particle size of less than 125 μm (e.g., less than 100 μm, 75 μm, 50 μm, 40 μm, 30 μm, 20 μm, or even less than 15 μm). In some cases, it may be desirable to select a particle size between 2 μm and 40 μm (e.g., 10 μm to 25 μm). If the particles are too large, they may feel abrasive when the composition is applied to sensitive skin. The particle size can be determined by any suitable method known in the art, such as by using a Coulter counter, a laser diffraction device (e.g., LA-960 from Horiba Scientific, etc.), a dynamic or static image analysis device (e.g., etc.) or optical microscopy (e.g., ASTM designation E20-85 entitled "Standard Practice for Particle Size Analysis of Particulate Substances in the Range of 0.2 to 75 Micrometers by Optical Microscopy", ASTM Vol. 14.02, 1993).

[0084] Some non-limiting examples of potentially suitable particles include polymer particles selected from the group consisting of: methyl silsesquioxane resin microspheres (e.g., available from Momentive Performance Materials, Inc.); series of spherical silicone resin beads); polymethyl methacrylate microspheres (Micropearl TM M 100); spherical silicone elastomer particles of cross-linked polydimethylsiloxane (e.g., KSP-100, KSP-101, KSP-102, KSP-103, KSP-104 and KSP-105, all available from Shin Etsu); spherical particles of polyamide (e.g., nylon-12 and Orgasol from Atochem); TM 2002D Nat C05); polystyrene microspheres (e.g., Dynospheres from Thermo Fisher Scientific TM); ethylene acrylate copolymers (e.g., FloBead from Kobo TM EA209); Aluminum starch octenylsuccinate (e.g., Dry Flo TM series of coated and uncoated spherical starch granules); polyethylene microspheres (e.g., Microthene TM FN510-00), and combinations of these.

[0085] Another example of a material that can provide suitable sensory properties is a silicone elastomer. A silicone elastomer can help reduce the tackiness of the composition (e.g., caused by non-volatile oils) and provide a more lubricated feel when applied. Some non-limiting examples of silicone elastomers are crosslinked organopolysiloxane (or siloxane) elastomers, as described in U.S. Patent Publication 2003 / 0049212. Elastomers can be emulsifying or non-emulsifying silicone elastomers. As used herein, "emulsifying" refers to a crosslinked organopolysiloxane elastomer with at least one polyoxyalkylene 30 (e.g., polyoxyethylene or polyoxypropylene) or polyglycerol moiety, and "non-emulsifying" refers to a crosslinked organopolysiloxane elastomer that is substantially free of polyoxyalkylene or polyglycerol moieties. Some non-limiting examples of silicone elastomers that may be suitable for use herein are disclosed in U.S. Publication Nos. 2013 / 0243835, 2003 / 0049212, and 2002 / 0022040; and U.S. Pat. Nos. 5,412,004; 5,837,793; and 5,811,487.

[0086] Other examples of materials that can provide desired sensory properties include low melting point waxes (e.g., hydrocarbon waxes and / or silicone waxes). Low melting point waxes can be selected to impart a dry feel when initially touched and a lubricating feel during use (i.e., when melted). Low melting point waxes may also facilitate easy application, rubbing, or otherwise applying of the care composition when melted. Some non-limiting examples of silicone waxes that may be suitable for use herein are described in U.S. Publication 2004 / 0197286. The melting point of the low melting point wax herein is selected to be less than the average human body temperature, which is typically about 37°C. For example, a low melting point wax may have a melting point between 25°C and 37°C. (e.g., 28°C to 35°C), which can be determined using the drop melting point described in ASTM D127.

[0087] Other examples of materials that can provide the desired sensory properties are starch. Starch can be derived from corn, wheat, potato, rice, cassava and tapioca flour. Starch can be unmodified, modified or partially degraded. Modified starch can include cationic starch, hydroxyethyl starch, carboxymethylated starch, and polylactic acid grafted starch and polycaprolactone grafted starch. [0089] The feel-adjusting particles may include colloidal oatmeal. The topical skin care composition may comprise from about 0.001% to about 25%, or from about 0.007% to about 20%, preferably from about 0.5% to about 10%, more preferably from about 1% to about 5%, or from about 1% to about 3%, by weight of the composition, of colloidal oatmeal.

[0090] Colloidal oats, prepared by grinding and / or processing oat grains into powders, are known to be used as skin protectants in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. To produce colloidal oats, oat grains may be ground and / or processed until no more than 3% of the total particle size in the powder exceeds 150 μm and no more than 20% of the total particle size exceeds 75 μm. When dispersed in water, the small size of the particles may contribute to their ability to deposit on the skin and form a closed barrier. For example, colloidal oats have been used in bar soaps, bath powders, lotions, and pastes to treat skin that has been damaged, irritated, or worn by a variety of causes. Colloidal oats may be from any oat species (i.e., Abyssinian oats, Bissan oats, naked oats, black oats, oats).

[0096] Methods of using the topical skin care compositions

[0097] Topical skin care compositions can be used to soothe irritated skin; relieve itchy, dry, irritated skin; and / or moisturize to soften the skin. Skin care compositions can heal, relieve, soothe and / or repair dry, cracked skin. Skin care compositions can form a protective barrier that can lock in moisture and keep the skin hydrated. Skin care compositions can provide results that are noticeable to the user over days, weeks, and / or one or more months.

[0098] The topical skin care composition can be used to treat, alleviate and / or soothe symptoms of psoriasis, eczema, xerosis, which may include itching, redness, flaking, cracking, flaking, tightness and / or roughness of the skin, scalp and / or mucous membranes, and / or otherwise dry and / or irritated skin. The treatment method may include the steps of providing a topical skin care composition according to the present disclosure, and applying a safe and effective amount of the topical skin care composition to at least a portion of the skin, scalp and / or mucous membrane of a user in need thereof.

[0099] Itching, redness, flaking, cracking, flaking, tightness, dryness and / or roughness may be associated with at least one skin, scalp and / or mucosal condition selected from eczematous dermatitis, contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis and / or xerosis. Other situations in which these symptoms may be experienced are also envisioned. When active redness is present and when active redness is not present, the topical skin care composition may also be applied to skin in need thereof, including but not limited to affected areas, surrounding skin, and generally whole body skin. The portion of the skin, scalp and / or mucosa of the user in need thereof may currently be affected by one or more of the following: rash, peeling, lesions, fissures and / or protrusions, or, none of the above may be present. The term "skin, scalp and / or mucosa in need thereof" is intended to be understood in a narrow sense as an affected area in which itching, redness, flaking, dryness and / or roughness and / or active redness is present, to be understood in a broad sense as the skin of the entire body. The topical skin care composition can provide relief, preferably rapid relief, during active flare-ups of itching, redness, flaking, dryness and / or roughness, and other troublesome symptoms associated with eczematous dermatitis, contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, and / or psoriasis. By "relief" is meant that the user can feel relief or improvement in symptoms after applying the topical skin care composition. By "rapid relief" is meant that the user can feel relief or improvement in symptoms after applying the topical skin care composition within about one (1) day after applying the topical skin care composition, within about four (4) days after applying the topical skin care composition, within about one (1) week after applying the topical skin care composition, within about two (2) weeks after applying the topical skin care composition, within about four (4) weeks after applying the topical skin care composition, within about eight (8) weeks after applying the topical skin care composition, etc., and generally within less than about twelve (12) weeks after applying the topical skin care composition. Preferably, the topical skin care composition provides the beneficial effects of rapid relief of itching, redness, flaking, dryness and / or roughness, and other troublesome symptoms associated with eczematous dermatitis, contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, xerosis, and / or psoriasis during the active flare period within one (1) to seven (7) days after application of the topical skin care application.

[0100] The method may include the step of providing a topical skin care composition according to the present disclosure. The topical skin care composition may be in any product form that enables a user to apply the composition to the user's skin, scalp and / or mucous membranes. Examples include, but are not limited to, the product forms disclosed herein. Depending on the product form, the topical skin care composition may be provided in a container, such as, for example, in a jar, in a squeeze tube, in a bottle with a pump dispenser, in a can, or in any such container known to those skilled in the art for delivering a topical skin care composition.

[0101] There are many protocols for applying topical skin care compositions. By way of non-limiting example, the step of applying a safe and effective amount of a topical skin care composition to at least a portion of a user's skin, scalp, and / or mucosa in need thereof may be performed as described below. A user may obtain a provided topical skin care composition and apply a large amount of the topical skin care composition to the skin, scalp, and / or mucosa in need thereof, preferably even more in large amounts to any affected area and areas surrounding the affected area. The step of applying the topical skin care composition to a portion of a user's skin, scalp, and / or mucosa in need thereof may include applying about 0.01 g / m 2 About 20g / m 2 , or about 0.05g / m 2 Up to 15g / m 2 , or about 0.1g / m 2 About 10g / m 2 A topical skin care composition.

[0102] In a non-limiting example, the step of applying the topical skin care composition to the portion of the user's skin, scalp and / or mucous membrane in need thereof is repeated at least once, preferably at least twice, or more frequently within a twenty-four hour period. When applied twice a day, the first application and the second application may be separated by at least 1 to 12 hours. Typically, the topical skin care composition may be applied in the morning and / or at night before going to bed.

[0103] The step of applying the topical skin care composition can be repeated during the treatment period. The treatment period is ideally of sufficient time to provide relief or improvement of its symptoms and also improve skin health. The treatment period can last until the user experiences relief or improvement of its symptoms, but preferably, even after the user experiences relief or improvement of its symptoms, the treatment period continues so that the topical skin care composition can gradually improve the health of the skin. Long-term application of the topical skin care composition after the user experiences relief or improvement of problem skin symptoms can potentially reduce the frequency and / or severity of future occurrences of problem skin symptoms. The treatment period can be at least 2 consecutive days, at least 3 consecutive days, at least 4 consecutive days, at least 5 consecutive days, at least 6 consecutive days, at least 1 week, at least 2 weeks, at least 3 weeks, at least 4 weeks, at least 5 weeks, at least 6 weeks, at least 7 weeks, at least 8 weeks, etc. The treatment period will be extended to multiple months (i.e., 3 to 12 months) or many years. In a non-limiting example, the topical skin care composition can be applied at least once a day, preferably at least twice, during a treatment period of at least 1 week, about 2 weeks, about 3 weeks or about 4 weeks. The topical skin care composition may be applied concurrently with any other prescription and / or over-the-counter compositions that the user may be taking.

[0104] In one non-limiting example, after applying the topical skin care composition to the skin, scalp and / or mucous membrane of the user in need thereof, the topical skin care composition is not removed within at least five minutes. Applicants have found that even if the topical skin care composition is not removed within at least five minutes, some relief or improvement of itching, redness, flaking, dryness and / or roughness of the skin, scalp and / or mucous membrane can be provided. Preferably, the topical skin care composition is not removed within at least thirty minutes, more preferably within at least one hour, and even more preferably within at least several hours, or until the next application of the topical skin care composition. In application, such as when the topical skin care composition is used for the scalp as a rinse-off product, it is particularly beneficial not to remove the topical skin care composition within at least five minutes. The user can clean the skin, scalp and / or mucous membrane before applying the topical skin care composition, such as by using a bar soap or other conventional cleansers. The user can apply the topical skin care composition without cleaning the skin, scalp and / or mucous membrane before application. After applying the topical skin care composition, the user can cover the topical skin care composition with, for example, a bandage. Covering with a bandage prevents the topical skin care composition from being rubbed off the skin, scalp and / or mucous membranes by external objects, thereby allowing the skin, scalp and / or mucous membranes to be exposed to the composition for a longer period of time.

[0105] Test Method

[0106] Rheological test methods

[0107] This method provides a suitable means for measuring the viscosity of the compositions herein. The instrument used in this method is a TA Instruments brand rheometer or equivalent. The instrument is set up to perform a rotating ramp under controlled stress conditions, from 0.01 Pa to 2000 Pa in 240 seconds, using serrated parallel plates of 40 mm diameter and 1.0 mm gap for the upper and lower geometries. The temperature is set to 25°C. The instrument protocol is set to collect 100 data points per decade of logarithmic distribution, with the shear rate exceeding 110s -1 Stop measurement when set.

[0108] After performing the automatic gap calibration, approximately 5 grams of sample are placed in the center of the plate. The plate is positioned to provide a gap of 1.05 mm, and any excess material extruded from the peripheral gap of the parallel plates is carefully trimmed. The plate is then moved the last 0.05 mm to provide a gap of 1.00 mm, and the measurement is started. At the end of the run, the data file is saved for subsequent plotting and analysis. Viscosity is reported in Pascal-seconds (PaS) for a shear rate of 0.10 s -1 or close to 0.10s -1 The value at time.

[0109] Brookfield Viscosity Test Method

[0110] The Brookfield viscosity of the composition is measured using a BROOKFIELD DV2 rotational viscometer at 20°C-21°C at 5 rpm and using a Helipath with spindle TC 93.

[0111] Adhesion method

[0112] The method provides a suitable means for determining the viscosity of the compositions described herein. The method uses a texture analyzer to contact a probe with a film formed by the composition. The texture analyzer then measures the force required to separate the probe from the composition film. Adhesion can be measured in this way. The adhesion method is configured to run for 100 minutes. Without being limited by theory, it is believed that the adhesion properties exhibited by the composition during the adhesion test are similar to the adhesion properties exhibited by the composition within the first few minutes (e.g., less than 10 minutes, between 30 seconds and 5 minutes, or between 1 minute and 3 minutes) of the user using the composition.

[0113] Figure 4An exemplary test apparatus for adhesion testing is shown. A TA.XT2i brand texture analyzer (available from Texture Technologies Corporation, MA) 50 or equivalent is used to measure the adhesion of a film formed from a composition of interest. The texture analyzer is equipped with an adhesion probe 52 in the form of a 12.75 mm diameter acrylic cylinder having a flat surface. During the test, the flat surface of the probe 52 is brought into contact with the surface of the film of the composition. Therefore, the flat surface of the probe and the surface of the film must be parallel to each other during the test to ensure that the film has sufficient contact over the entire effective test surface of the probe 52. The film is prepared by filling or overfilling a rectangular channel 54 (e.g., 25 cm long × 30 mm wide × 0.25 mm deep) with the composition to be tested (and then pulling it down).

[0114] Adhesive test scheme is used to test with the pre-test speed of 0.10mm / s, the test speed of 0.10mm / s and the post-test speed of 1.0mm / s. The force applied is 200g, the return distance is 4mm, and the contact time is 5.0s. The trigger type of the designated sample contact is set to automatic, and the trigger force is 5.0g. The test is run and immediately after the film is prepared, it is run with the following time increments: <1 minute (that is, immediately after the film is prepared), 10 minutes, 20 minutes, 30 minutes, 40 minutes, 50 minutes, 60 minutes, 80 minutes and 100 minutes. Each time point is run on the previously undisturbed / untested area of the sample. Each sample is run in parallel three times, and the average value is recorded.

[0115] The average tack between 20 minutes and 40 minutes can be used to determine if the product is too sticky to be accepted by consumers. To calculate the average tack between 20 minutes and 40 minutes, add the tack at 20 minutes, 30 minutes, and 40 minutes and divide by 3 and report in grams (g).

[0116] % Transmittance Test Method

[0117] Transparency can be measured by % transmittance (%T) using an ultraviolet / visible (UV / VI) spectrophotometer, which determines the transmittance of UV / VIS light through a sample. It has been demonstrated that a wavelength of light of 600 nm is sufficient to characterize the transmittance of light through a sample. Generally, it is best to follow the specific instructions for use associated with the specific spectrophotometer used. Typically, the procedure for measuring percent transmittance begins by setting the spectrophotometer to 600 nm. Then, a calibration "blank" is run to calibrate the display reading to 100% transmittance. The individual test samples are then placed in a cuvette designed to fit the specific spectrophotometer, and care is taken to ensure that there are no bubbles in the sample before the spectrophotometer measures T% with the spectrophotometer at 600 nm. Alternatively, multiple samples can be measured simultaneously using a spectrophotometer (such as the SpectraMax M-5 purchased from Molecular Devices). The multiple samples were transferred to a 96-well visible flat bottom plate (Greiner part #655-001), ensuring that there were no air bubbles trapped in the sample. The flat bottom plate was placed in the SpectraMax M-5 and the T% was measured using Software Prov. 5™ software from Molecular Devices.

[0118] Example

[0119] The following data and examples are provided to help illustrate the skin care compositions described herein. The exemplified compositions are given for illustrative purposes only and should not be construed as limitations of the present disclosure, as many variations are possible without departing from the spirit and scope of the present disclosure. Unless otherwise indicated, all parts, percentages and ratios herein are by weight.

[0120] The examples in Tables 1 to 3 and 6 below are prepared by the following method. First, an aqueous phase is prepared by mixing water and water-soluble ingredients, including, but not limited to, glycerin, chelating agents (e.g., disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate, EDDS), water-soluble skin care actives (e.g., panthenol), and antioxidants (e.g., hydroxyacetophenone). The aqueous phase is mixed and heated to at least about 50° C. but less than about 80° C. until the ingredients are dissolved and / or dispersed. The aqueous phase may contain from about 70% to about 98%, alternatively from about 75% to about 95%, alternatively from about 80% to about 94%, alternatively from about 85% to about 93%, or alternatively from about 88% to about 92% water, by weight of the aqueous phase.

[0121] In a second container, prepare an oil phase premix. The premix includes a liquid emollient and a waxy emollient and one or more emulsifiers. The premix is mixed and heated to about 50°C but less than about 80°C until the ingredients are fully dispersed in the premix.

[0122] The premix is added to the water phase. The mixture is then ground to emulsify the oil phase premix into the water phase to form an emulsion in which the water phase is the continuous phase and the oil phase is the dispersed phase. One or more additional ingredients are added after emulsification while continuously mixing with an overhead mixer. Additional ingredients, including but not limited to polymeric thickeners (e.g., SEPILIFE TM NUDE、NATURSOL TM EMI 132), silicones, colorants, pigments, powders, mica, preservatives, fragrances and additional skin actives.

[0123] The viscosities of the examples in the table below were determined using the Rheology Test Method as disclosed herein.

[0124] For Tables 1 to 3 below and Figure 1 In the embodiment detailed in, various emulsifiers were tested in skin care compositions. Each emulsifier was tested in a composition containing an emollient, the emollient including isohexadecane (a non-polar hydrocarbon oil) or triheptanoin (a triglyceride with greater polarity than isohexadecane). If the emulsifier helps to form sufficient viscosity, as indicated by the rheological test method described herein, such as when the composition has a viscosity greater than or equal to 550Pa*s, the emulsifier may be acceptable to consumers. This viscosity is considered to be the minimum necessary to produce an acceptable moisturizer composition, and compositions with higher viscosity may be more preferred by consumers, and in some embodiments, viscosity can be increased by adding more emulsifiers and / or polymers. It is preferred to select an emulsifier that produces a composition containing isohexadecane and triheptanol emollients with sufficient viscosity, because this shows that the emulsifier forms viscosity in a range of products with different emollient polarities. In addition, many skin care products use more than one emollient of different polarity to help dissolve various skin care beneficial ingredients, including ingredients that improve skin texture, tone, or prevent UV damage.

[0125] Some embodiments are made with feel-adjusting particles, wherein the feel-adjusting particles are modified corn starch or maize corn starch (which may be HTP Pure It was found that there were no significant differences in viscosity and stability when formulated with either starch.

[0150] 12. From of Emulsifier CP5

[0151] The emulsifier used in Examples A-1 and 2 includes PEG-100 stearate emulsifier, a polyethylene glycol ester of stearic acid. These compositions have a viscosity acceptable to consumers. However, some consumers prefer compositions that do not contain PEG.

[0152] Examples BJ include an emulsifier that does not contain PEG. In addition, the emulsifier in Examples BJ is natural or naturally derived and is biodegradable. Examples where the viscosity of both emollients is greater than or equal to 550 Pa*s are Examples E, G, and H. Examples E-1 and 2 are not preferred because both examples have a significant malodor that would be offensive to many consumers.

[0153] Example G-1 may be acceptable to consumers. However, Example G-2 is noticeably tacky, which makes the product difficult to spread on the user's skin, and the product may feel heavy and sticky after application or may be painful if applied to dry or damaged skin. This emulsifier may not be preferred because it does not produce a consumer preferred product in a range of emollients (see Figure 2 , Table 4, and additional text for additional data and discussion regarding the viscosity of Example G-2).

[0154] Examples H-1 and 2 both have a viscosity greater than or equal to 550 emollients and no significant unpleasant odor. In addition, both examples are stable emulsions with a smooth, silky texture. The emulsifier in Examples H-1 and 2 is cetearyl olive oil ester. It is believed that other emulsifiers including waxy ester mixtures made from fatty alcohols and fatty acids derived from natural sources with carbon chain lengths ranging from C12 to C22 (e.g., olive, palm, corn, palm, rapeseed, soybean, sunflower, coconut, tallow, rapeseed oil, castor oil) can be used in stable skin care compositions with sufficient viscosity (e.g., ≥550 Pa*s).

[0155] Figure 2 Table 4 shows the adhesion of Examples G-2 (Table 2) and H-2 (Table 3). Adhesion was measured according to the Adhesion Test Method described herein. Both Examples included the emollient triheptanoin at 6.0% and 0.20% of the emulsifier, respectively. The emulsifier in Example G-2 was polyglyceryl-3 cetearyl olivate emulsifier (can be Bioten from ACME- Commercially available). Figure 1 Examples G-1 and 2 are shown to have the highest viscosities of Inventive Examples BJ, which initially indicates Bioten may be preferred by consumers. However, Figure 2 Table 4 shows that Example G-2 has greater adhesion than Example H-2, especially in the 20-minute to 40-minute time range of the Adhesion Method. The higher adhesion is significant in that Example G-2 is expected to feel sticky and tacky, especially when compared to Example H-2.

[0156] Table 4

[0157]

[0158] Figure 3 The viscosities of Examples H-1 and H-2 (see Table 3) are shown after preparation, after freeze / thaw cycles, and under accelerated stability conditions, i.e., after 2 weeks of storage at 50° C. and after one month of storage at 40° C. If the viscosity does not change by more than 40% under these conditions, the composition is considered stable and acceptable to the consumer. Figure 3 It is shown that both Examples H-1 and H-2 meet the stability criteria and are acceptable to consumers.

[0159] Table 5 below shows the results of a consumer test in which consumers self-reported moderate to very severe dry, itchy or cracked skin. In this test, each consumer applied one of the products in Table 6 or Table 7 to their hands and body daily for four weeks. In each category, they rated the product as poor (0), fair (25), good (50), very good (75) or excellent (100), as shown in Table 6. The total score was then divided by the total number of consumers who used the product to determine the average score for each category.

[0160] From Table 5, Example 1 and Daily Moisturizing Lotion and Example 2 with It was found that Examples 1 and 2 were rated higher than their counterparts in the following aspects: Product: Overall rating, fully absorbed, pleasant to use, moisturized skin, reduced all-day dryness, skin feels healthy, and skin looks healthy. Example 2 also had a high statistical score for non-tacky / sticky. Both Examples 1 and 2 had a score of above 80 for non-tacky / sticky, which can be difficult to achieve in a skin care composition that provides high moisturization because it is made with relatively high levels of glycerin (Example 1 has 7.5% and Example 2 has 10%) and emollients (Example 1 has a total emollient content of 7.5% and Example 2 has a total emollient content of 19%).
