Description

Background Art

[0001] The present disclosure relates generally to power generation systems and, more particularly, to systems that use recirculated exhaust gas and an exhaust gas recirculation compressor to increase the output of a power plant.

[0002] At least some known power plants generate energy from the combustion of fuels containing carbon and hydrogen, such as coal, oil, peat, waste, biofuels, natural gas, etc. In addition to carbon and hydrogen, such fuels may also contain oxygen, moisture, and / or pollutants. Thus, the combustion of such fuels may result in the production of a gas stream containing pollutants in the form of ash, carbon dioxide (CO2), sulfur compounds (often in the form of sulfur oxides, referred to as "SOx"), nitrogen compounds (often in the form of nitrogen oxides, referred to as "NOx"), chlorine, mercury, and / or other trace elements.

[0003] To facilitate the removal of pollutants from the gas stream, at least some known power plants may use a capture system that attempts to capture pollutants before the exhaust gas stream is released into the atmosphere. For example, some known power plants use a carbon capture system that attempts to capture carbon dioxide (CO2) after combustion and store it underground to reduce the amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere. However, due to the power required for the carbon capture process, the carbon capture process can reduce the overall efficiency of the power plant and / or limit the power production of the power plant. Therefore, at least some of such power plant systems operate at a reduced power production efficiency. Summary of the invention

[0012] Figure 1 1 is a schematic diagram of an exemplary power plant 100. In an exemplary embodiment, the power plant 100 includes a gas turbine assembly 102 and a steam turbine 104. The gas turbine assembly 102 includes a compressor 106, a combustor 108, and a turbine 110 coupled together in a series flow relationship. In operation, the combustor 108 receives air from the compressor 106 and receives fuel from a fuel supply, and mixes the fuel and air to form a fuel-air mixture, which is burned to generate combustion gases. The combustion gases are directed through the turbine 110 and discharged from the turbine 110 as a first exhaust gas stream 112. In an exemplary embodiment, the power plant 100 also includes a steam cycle arrangement, which includes a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) 114 and the steam turbine 104. In some embodiments, the steam cycle arrangement may also include other components, including a condenser 116 and at least one condensate pump 117.

[0013] In an exemplary embodiment, the HRSG 114 includes an inlet 118 that receives a first exhaust gas stream 112 from the gas turbine assembly 102. Heat is extracted from the first exhaust gas stream 112, and a second exhaust gas stream 120 is discharged from a first outlet 122. The temperature of the second exhaust gas stream 120 is lower than the temperature of the first exhaust gas stream 112 entering the inlet 118. The HRSG 114 also includes a second outlet 124 that discharges a steam stream 126. The steam turbine 104 receives the steam stream 126 and then discharges a first extraction stream 128 therefrom. Any steam that is not extracted using the first extraction stream 128 continues to expand to condensation in the condenser 116. In some embodiments, the steam turbine 104 may include an additional steam inlet from the HRSG 114. In an exemplary embodiment, both the gas turbine assembly 102 and the steam turbine 104 are coupled to a generator 132 that generates electricity using a working fluid flowing through each. Alternatively, the turbine assembly 102 and the steam turbine 104 may be located on separate shafts, each of which is coupled to a separate generator.

[0014] In an exemplary embodiment, the power plant 100 also includes a carbon capture system 134. During operation, the carbon capture system 134 produces a carbon dioxide stream 138. The carbon capture system 134 may include one or more separators, which are used either alone or in combination with other separation processes (such as carbon dioxide selective membrane technology, absorption processes, diaphragms, etc.). A waste gas stream or a carbon-depleted waste gas stream 140 can be discharged from the carbon capture system 134 into the surrounding environment. The waste gas stream 140 can also be further processed before being discharged into the environment or elsewhere. For example, at least a portion of the carbon dioxide stream 138 can be increased to a supercritical pressure for transportation and / or storage.

[0015] The carbon capture system 134 typically includes an absorber 142, a stripper 144, and a reboiler 146. In operation, the second exhaust gas stream 120 discharged from the HRSG 114 is directed toward the absorber 142. The exhaust gas can be pre-treated to remove particulates and impurities, such as SOx and NOx, before entering the absorber 142. In addition, in an exemplary embodiment, a first cooler 148 is connected between the HRSG 114 and the carbon capture system 134. Alternatively, the carbon capture system 134 may include at least one boost blower (not shown) to pressurize the flow directed toward the carbon capture system 134. The first cooler 148 can be, but is not limited to, a quench tower. The first cooler 148 cools a portion of the second exhaust gas stream 120 that will be directed toward the carbon capture system 134.

[0016] The solvent 152 rich in carbon dioxide is discharged from the absorber 142 and then directed to the stripper 144 via a pump 154. The solvent 156 lean in carbon dioxide is discharged from the stripper 144 and directed back to the upper portion of the absorber 142 via a reboiler 146, a pump 166 and a heat exchanger 158. The absorber 142 can be any typical configuration for providing gas-liquid contact and absorption. The absorber 142 and the stripper 144 can, for example, be combined with a variety of internal components, such as trays, fillers and / or carriers. In one embodiment, the absorber 142 absorbs carbon dioxide via a countercurrent from the exhaust gas entering the absorber 142. The stripper 144 removes carbon dioxide from the solvent 152. The absorber 142 and the stripper 144 can be variably sized based on the amount of carbon dioxide to be removed, and can be variably sized according to various engineering design formulas. In addition, a single stripper 144 can be used to be connected in parallel to multiple absorbers 142.

[0017] In an exemplary embodiment, the solvent 152 is preheated relative to the solvent 156 in a countercurrent heat exchanger 158 and then directed to the stripper 144. The stripper 144 is a pressurized unit in which carbon dioxide is recovered from the solvent 152. The stripper 144 generally includes a reboiler 146 that receives a portion of the solvent 156 exiting the stripper 144. The reboiler 146 evaporates the solvent 156 and directs the solvent vapor 160 back to the stripper 144 to facilitate increased carbon dioxide separation. A single stripper 144 may be coupled to more than one reboiler 146. The reboiler 146 receives steam, such as from the steam turbine 104 via the first extraction stream 128, to provide a heat duty in the reboiler 146.

[0018] The vapor 162 exiting the stripper 144 is partially condensed in the condenser 136. The condensed portion of the vapor 162 is returned to the stripper 144 as reflux 164. The reflux 164 may be diverted through an accumulator (not shown) and a pump (not shown) prior to entering the stripper 144. A carbon dioxide stream 138 is removed from the condenser 136 for transport and / or storage after compression.

[0019] In an exemplary embodiment, the power plant 100 utilizes exhaust gas recirculation with a post-combustion carbon capture system 134. An exhaust gas recirculation flow 190 is drawn downstream from the first cooler 148 and directed toward the compressor 106. The compressor 106 includes a compressor inlet 168 and a compressor outlet 170. The first cooler 148 may be, but is not limited to, a quench tower. A recirculation compressor 192 is coupled between the cooler 148 and the compressor 106. The recirculation compressor 192 receives the exhaust gas recirculation flow 190 and discharges a compressed exhaust gas flow 194 toward the compressor 106. The compressor 106 receives the compressed exhaust gas flow 194 at the compressor outlet 170. More specifically, the compressed exhaust gas flow 194 is directed toward the compressor outlet 170 to facilitate improved performance of the power plant 100 by increasing the power generated by the gas turbine assembly 102 and improving the efficiency of the gas turbine assembly. Additionally, compressed exhaust gas flow 194 is directed toward compressor outlet 170 to facilitate improving the performance of carbon capture system 134 by increasing the carbon dioxide concentration of first exhaust gas flow 112 exhausted from turbine 110 , thereby improving the performance of power plant 100 .

[0020] The exemplary power plant 100 may include a controller 176 for dynamically adjusting the operation of the power plant 100. For example, the controller 176 may monitor and / or control the operation of the recirculation compressor 192. Thus, in one embodiment, the flow of the exhaust gas recirculation stream 190 is adjusted by the controller 176 to facilitate improving the output of the power plant 100. That is, the controller 176 may selectively adjust the flow of the exhaust gas recirculation stream 190 extracted downstream from the first cooler 148 as described herein to facilitate improving the output of the power plant 100. The controller 176 facilitates extending the service life of components within the power plant 100. Thus, the flow adjustment provides the operator of the power plant 100 with options to use when determining how to optimize the performance and life consumption of the gas turbine 102.

[0021] Figure 2 is a schematic diagram of an exemplary power plant 200 . Figure 2 The implementation shown in is similar to Figure 1 The embodiments shown in , with the differences noted herein below, therefore, Figure 2 The reference numerals used in Figure 1 The same reference numerals are used in Figure 2, the power plant 200 utilizes exhaust gas recirculation with a post-combustion carbon capture system 134. The exemplary power plant 200 utilizes a non-condensing steam turbine 202 to power the recirculation compressor 192, thereby reducing the negative impact of powering the recirculation compressor 192 on the output and / or efficiency of the power plant 100. The non-condensing steam turbine 202 may be coupled to the recirculation compressor 192 via a gearbox 204, such as Figure 2 In some embodiments, the non-condensing steam turbine 202 may be directly coupled to the recirculation compressor 192 via a shaft.

[0022] In the exemplary embodiment, the non-condensing steam turbine 202 includes a non-condensing steam turbine inlet 206 and a non-condensing steam turbine exhaust outlet 208. The HRSG 114 discharges a steam stream 126 from the second outlet 124. The steam stream 126 includes a first stream portion 210 directed toward the steam turbine 104 and a second stream portion 212 directed toward the non-condensing steam turbine 202. The non-condensing steam turbine 202 receives the second stream portion 212 through the non-condensing steam turbine inlet 206 and then discharges a second extraction stream 214 through the non-condensing steam turbine exhaust outlet 208. The reboiler 146 of the carbon capture system 134 receives steam, such as from the steam turbine 104 via the first extraction stream 128 and from the non-condensing steam turbine 202 via the second extraction stream 214, to provide a heat load in the reboiler 146.

[0023] The exemplary power plant 200 may include a controller 176 for dynamically adjusting the operation of the power plant 200. For example, the controller 176 may monitor and / or control the operation of the recirculation compressor 192 and the non-condensing steam turbine 202, and may also determine, for example, steam cycle losses due to discharging the second extraction stream 214 and the first extraction stream 128 toward the carbon capture system 134. In some embodiments, an optimal balance may be achieved between the load of the recirculation compressor 192 and the non-condensing steam turbine 202 discharging the second extraction stream 214 and the steam turbine 104 discharging the first extraction stream 128 to provide steam to the reboiler 146.

[0024] The controller 176 can also dynamically determine power consumption and steam cycle losses, and adjust the operation of the power plant 200 accordingly. In one embodiment, the operation of the recirculation compressor 192 and the non-condensing steam turbine 202 is variably adjusted by the controller 176 to facilitate improving the power plant output. That is, the controller 176 can adjust the flow of the exhaust gas recirculation stream 190, and thereby adjust the second extraction stream 214 directed toward the carbon capture system 134 to provide an improvement in the output of the power plant 200. The controller 176 facilitates extending the useful life of components within the power plant 200. Therefore, the flow adjustment provides the operator of the power plant 200 with options to use when determining how to optimize the performance and life consumption of the power plant equipment.

[0025] Figure 3 is a schematic diagram of an alternative power plant 300 . Figure 3 The implementation shown in is similar to Figure 1 and Figure 2 The embodiments shown in , with the differences noted herein below, therefore, Figure 3 The reference numerals used in Figure 1 and Figure 2 The same reference numerals are used in Figure 3 , the power plant 300 utilizes exhaust gas recirculation with a post-combustion carbon capture system 134. The exhaust gas recirculation flow 190 is drawn downstream from the first cooler 148 and directed toward the compressor 106. The compressor 106 includes a compressor inlet 168 and a compressor outlet 170. The first cooler 148 can be, but is not limited to, a quench tower. The power plant 300 utilizes a motor 302 to power the recirculation compressor 192. The recirculation compressor 192 is coupled to the motor 302, which provides the necessary driving power to the recirculation compressor 192.

[0026] The power plant 300 may include a controller 176 for dynamically adjusting the operation of the power plant 300. For example, the controller 176 may monitor and / or control the operation of the recirculation compressor 192. In one embodiment, the operation of the recirculation compressor 192 is variably adjusted by the controller 176 to facilitate improving the power plant output. That is, the controller 176 may adjust the flow rate of the exhaust gas recirculation stream 190 to provide an improvement in the output of the power plant 300.
