Description

Field of the Invention

[0001] The present invention relates to a cleaning composition. In particular, the present invention relates to a liquid cleaning composition that provides improved deposition of benefit agents. Background of the Invention

[0003] Several liquid cleaning compositions are known in the art, which contain one or another benefit agent, also known as an active substance. Such benefit agents or active substances are generally included in liquid cleaning compositions for the purpose of providing a beneficial effect. For example, moisturizers are included in cleaning compositions (e.g., hand washing compositions and body wash compositions) to provide a moisturizing effect.

[0004] However, the technical effects obtained by including active substances in cleaning compositions are often limited for a variety of reasons. One of the possible reasons is said to be the deposition of active substances on the surface to be cleaned or washed. Generally, it is challenging to deposit active substances on the surface by cleaning compositions, because the cleaning action usually includes the step of removing the composition from the surface (washing it off), typically within a few seconds to a few minutes after application. Therefore, it is very challenging to deposit active substances on the surface within a limited duration.

[0005] Therefore, there remains a need to provide a liquid cleaning composition that provides improved deposition of benefit agents such as octadecanoic acid.Examples of octadecanoic acids include 10-hydroxystearic acid, 12-hydroxystearic acid, petroselinic acid, and conjugated linoleic acid.

[0006] The present invention has been found that liquid cleaning compositions comprising a selected amount of octadecanoic acid in combination with a selected amount of an organic acid having a certain pKa range, wherein the organic acids having a certain pKa range are organic acids other than octadecanoic acid, provide improved deposition of octadecanoic acid. For example, when octadecanoic acid (e.g., 12-hydroxystearic acid (12-HSA)) is used in combination with an organic acid having a pKa in the range of 2.5 to 4.9, such as benzoic acid (pKa=4.2), in a liquid cleaning composition, it results in improved deposition of 12-HSA on a surface such as the skin. [0009] a. 0.01 to 2 wt%, preferably 0.1 to 2 wt% of octadecanoic acid; and

[0010] b. 0.01 to 5 wt. %, preferably 0.5 to 5 wt. % of an organic acid having a pKa in the range of 2.5 to 4.9,

[0012] The octadecanoic acid is selected from 10-hydroxystearic acid, 12-hydroxystearic acid, petroselinic acid, conjugated linoleic acid and mixtures thereof, and is preferably not stearic acid.

[0013] In a second aspect, the present invention relates to a method for improving the deposition of octadecanoic acid, comprising the steps of:

[0014] i. applying the composition of the first aspect to a surface; and

[0015] ii. at least partially removing the composition from the surface,

[0016] wherein the step of removing the composition is performed within 5 minutes of the step of applying the composition to the surface;

[0017] The octadecanoic acid is selected from 10-hydroxystearic acid, 12-hydroxystearic acid, petroselinic acid, conjugated linoleic acid and mixtures thereof, and is preferably not stearic acid.

[0018] In a third aspect, the present invention relates to the use of an organic acid having a pKa in the range of 2.5 to 4.9 in a liquid cleaning composition comprising octadecanoic acid for improving the deposition of octadecanoic acid on a surface, wherein the organic acid having a pKa in the range of 2.5 to 4.9 is an organic acid other than octadecanoic acid;

[0077] The present invention is further described with reference to the following non-limiting examples: Example

[0078] Embodiment A, 1-9:

[0079] Experimental protocol

[0080] Briefly, the compositions shown in Table 1 below were prepared using different concentrations of 12-HSA and benzoic acid (as shown in Table 1) in the surfactant solution at 85°C, which were then cooled to 25°C; and the pH was adjusted to the desired value.

[0081] Sedimentation assays were performed as follows:

[0082] The model skin sample, in vitro skin (Vitro Skin N-19 from the IMS test group) was cut into 5 cm x 5 cm. It was pre-wetted with 500 microliters of DI water and rubbed for 30 seconds with gloves on, and excess water was drained by shaking. 80 mg of the neat composition (as shown in Table 1 below) was applied to the in vitro skin. It was foamed for 20 seconds with fingertips wearing latex gloves. The foam was retained on the in vitro skin for 30 seconds. Thereafter, 100 ml of deionized water was used to rinse both sides of the in vitro skin for about 30 seconds. The active substances deposited on the in vitro skin were extracted in methanol by sonication in a bath sonicator for 20 minutes. The extract was analyzed using LC-MS. In short, the compositions shown in Table 1 below were prepared at 85°C using different concentrations of 12-HSA and benzoic acid (as shown below) in a surfactant solution, which were then cooled to 25°C; and the pH was adjusted to the desired value.

[0083] Table 1

[0084]

[0085] [Note: pH = 4.0 except for * (where pH = 9.0); water to 100]

[0086] Embodiment B, 10-12

[0087] Further compositions were prepared as shown in Table-2 below and the deposition of 12HSA was evaluated using the same procedure as used in the previous examples of Table-1. The data are summarized in Table-2 below:

[0088] Table 2

[0089]

[0090] The data in Table 2 above show that the organic acids according to the invention (pKa 2.5 to 4.9) (Examples 10 to 12) alone or in combination provide superior octadecanoic acid deposition as defined in the present invention compared to organic acids with higher pKa (lauric and myristic acids) (Example B).
