[0002] This application claims priority to U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 63 / 538,878 filed on September 18, 2023, U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 63 / 636,182 filed on April 19, 2024, and U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 63 / 644,822 filed on May 9, 2024, all entitled "Sealed Fastener for Attachment of Spoiler," which are incorporated herein by reference. Background Art
[0003] Automotive components require fastening techniques that are simple to manufacture and assemble. Furthermore, the fastening techniques should first be reliable and efficient. In some examples, it is beneficial to limit the amount of compression applied to the component.
[0004] In some cases, when an application includes a relatively weak material (such as plastic) that is subject to compressive loads, a compression limiter may be used. The compression limiter strengthens the assembly and accepts the load applied when the fastener is tightened within the assembly. When a compression limiter is used, the integrity of the material is not compromised by the increased pressure. In many fastening systems, it is critical to maintain a tight seal between components to prevent leakage, contamination, or fastener loosening.
[0005] Existing solutions are overly complex, increasing cost, the number of parts required, and assembly complexity and time. Therefore, despite the progress to date, there remains a great need for a compression limiting fastener with improved properties that is configured to limit the amount of compression on one or more components, such as vehicle components. The disclosed fastening system introduces a seal that not only ensures a secure fit, but also enhances the sealing properties of the fastener when assembled. Summary of the invention

[0029] Reference to singular items should be understood to include plural items, and vice versa, unless otherwise explicitly stated or clear from the context. Grammatical conjunctions are intended to express any and all disjunctive and conjunctive combinations of connected clauses, sentences, words, etc., unless otherwise specified or clear from the context. Unless otherwise indicated herein, the description of the range of values herein is not intended to be limited, but refers to any and all values falling within and / or including the range individually, and each individual value within such a range is incorporated into the specification, just as it is separately narrated herein. In the following description, it should be understood that terms such as "first", "second", "top", "bottom", "side", "front", "back" are words for convenience and should not be interpreted as restrictive terms. For example, although in some examples, the first side is positioned adjacent to or close to the second side, the terms "first side" and "second side" do not mean any particular order in which these sides are sorted.
[0030] When accompanied by numerical values, the terms "about", "approximately", "substantially", etc. should be understood to indicate deviations, as understood by those of ordinary skill in the art, for satisfactory operation for the intended purpose. Values and / or ranges of values are provided herein only as examples and do not constitute limitations on the scope of the present disclosure. The use of any and all examples or exemplary language ("for example", "such as", etc.) provided herein is intended only to better illustrate the disclosed examples and does not constitute limitations on the scope of the present disclosure. The terms "for example (eg,)" and "for example (for example)" lead to a list with one or more non-limiting examples, instances or descriptions. Any language in the specification should not be interpreted as indicating that any unclaimed element is essential to the practice of the disclosed examples.
[0031] The term "and / or" refers to any one or more of the multiple items in the list connected by "and / or". As an example, "x and / or y" refers to any element in the three-element set {(x), (y), (x, y)}. In other words, "x and / or y" means "one or both of x and y". As another example, "x, y and / or z" refers to any element in the seven-element set {(x), (y), (z), (x, y), (x, z), (y, z), (x, y, z)}. In other words, "x, y and / or z" means "one or more of x, y and z".
[0032] Conventional nut solutions typically involve a separate cold-headed part assembled with a secondary seal, while stud solutions use profiles for both compression limiting and sealing. However, these designs face challenges in tight packaging conditions, especially when customers require direct contact between parts. The present disclosure proposes a novel solution that addresses these limitations.
[0033] A sealed fastener assembly for attaching a first component to a second component via a male fastener is disclosed. The sealed fastener assembly is configured to form a seal and / or limit compression on the first component and / or the second component, thereby preventing deformation of the plastic substrate and fluid intrusion. The nut solution features flexible resilient flanges that retain the clip in the mating panel, allowing easy insertion. The design also provides compression limitation to prevent deformation of the substrate and incorporates a recessed circular feature for applying a sealing film. Additionally, the fastener assembly provides flexibility in placing the seal on the nut or under the bolt head, thereby enhancing water resistance.
[0034] In some examples, the retention stud solution introduces a short pull sleeve with a retainer (e.g., notch) for securing the bolt during handling and a sealing membrane for preventing water intrusion. A flange may be employed to prevent the bolt from rotating during nut installation, while the anti-rotation feature may be facilitated via a recessed cavity, allowing for tight packaging.
[0035] Advantages of the present disclosure include weight savings achieved by utilizing lighter spring steel in place of cold headed parts, improved sealing performance achieved by a more robustly applied film, enhanced packaging conditions, and flexibility in accommodating different stud sizes. Additionally, these solutions ensure a more secure hold between the seal and the metal component during shipping and handling, providing a more cost-effective and reliable alternative to existing market solutions.
[0036] In one example, a sealed fastener assembly for attaching a first component to a second component via a male fastener having a head and a shank includes: a seal having a substantially flat surface and a seal opening; and a retaining clip having a body portion, the body portion including a first plate elastically connected to a second plate via a clip side wall to define a channel, wherein the second plate includes a recessed seal cover configured to receive at least a portion of the seal, and wherein the retaining clip is configured to receive at least a portion of the first component via the channel.
[0037] In another example, a retaining clamp for attaching a first component to a second component via a male fastener having a head and a shank includes: a first plate having a recessed fastener cover having a first opening formed therein, wherein the recessed fastener cover is configured to receive the head of the male fastener and slow down rotation of the head; and a second plate having a recessed seal cover having a second opening formed therein, wherein the second plate is elastically connected to the first plate via a clip side wall to define a channel, wherein the recessed seal cover is configured to receive at least a portion of the seal, wherein the retaining clamp is configured to receive at least a portion of the first component via the channel, and wherein the recessed fastener cover and the recessed seal cover are configured to interact with each other to maintain a distance between the first plate and the second plate.

The collar can be configured to maintain a distance between the first plate and the second plate.
[0039] In some examples, the first plate includes a recessed fastener cage having a first opening formed therein.
[0040] In some examples, the female fastener cover is configured to receive the head of the male fastener and slow rotation of the head.
[0041] In some examples, the recessed seal boot defines a second opening that aligns with the first opening to define a fastener aperture configured to receive at least a portion of the handle.
[0042] In some examples, the recessed fastener cover and the recessed seal cover are configured to interact with each other to maintain a distance between the first plate and the second plate.
[0043] In some examples, the recessed seal cover is configured to extend from the second plate toward the first plate.
[0044] In some examples, the recessed seal housing defines a circular perimeter.
[0045] In some examples, the substantially planar surface of the seal includes one or more annular rings configured to compress or deform during assembly.
[0046] In some examples, the seal opening is concentric with the one or more annular rings.

[0051] In some examples, the first plate includes a collar having an internally threaded bore configured to threadably engage the shank.
[0052] In some examples, the retaining clip is a stamped metal part.
[0053] In some examples, at least one of the first plate or the second plate defines one or more retention tabs configured to retain the male fastener as a part assembly (PIA).
[0054] Figure 1a A side elevation assembled view of a fastening system 100 according to the first aspect of the present disclosure is shown. Figure 1b Shows Figure 1a FIG. 1 is an isometric assembly view of the fastening system 100 , wherein the first component 104 and the second component 106 are omitted for illustrative purposes. Figure 1c An isometric view thereof after assembly is shown. Figure 1d Shows Figure 1a The fastening system 100 is viewed along the section line AA ( Figure 1c ) is a cross-sectional elevational side view taken from the top. Figure 1e An isometric assembled view of the sealed fastener assembly 102 is shown. Figure 1f A side elevation assembled view of the sealed fastener assembly 102 is shown. Figure 1g A top side view of the sealed fastener assembly 102 is shown after assembly. Figure 1h 102 is shown in an assembled bottom side view. Although the figures depict a single retainer 110 and fastener 108, multiple retainers 110 and fasteners 108 may be used to secure a single first component 104 to a single second component 106. For example, four fasteners 108 may be used at spaced locations along a portion of the first component 104 and the second component 106. It is contemplated that the fasteners 108 may be symmetrically disposed (e.g., at each corner of the first component 104) or disposed in an asymmetrical or staggered configuration.
[0055] The illustrated fastening system 100 includes a first component 104, a second component 106, and a sealed fastener assembly 102. The sealed fastener assembly 102 is configured to join the first component 104 and the second component 106 while limiting compression on the first component 104 and / or the second component 106. In this example, the sealed fastener assembly 102 is a multi-component assembly consisting of a retainer 110 and a seal 138.
[0056] To facilitate attachment via the sealed fastener assembly 102, each of the first component 104 and the second component 106 may include one or more engagement features. For example, the first component 104 is shown as having a first opening 114 formed therein, and the second component 106 is shown as having a second opening 120 formed therein. The first opening 114 and the second opening 120 may be formed in the respective first component 104 or second component 106 during manufacturing or added post-manufacturing by a mechanical process (e.g., drilling, cutting, engraving, etc.). After the first component 104 and the second component 106 are assembled, the second component 106 is at least partially covered by the first component 104.
[0057] exist Figure 1a to Figure 1h In the example of , the sealed fastener assembly 102 is configured to engage a male fastener 108 (e.g., an externally threaded shaft, such as a bolt) via a female fastener 112 (e.g., an internally threaded component, such as a nut or a threaded collar). As shown, the male fastener 108 includes a head 108a and a shank 108b. In the example shown, the head 108a is hexagonal, and the shank 108b defines a threaded portion 108d and a non-threaded portion 108c adjacent to the head 108a (e.g., a grip). In this example, the retainer 110 is used to mechanically engage and couple with the first component 104 via the first opening 114, while the male fastener 108 and the female fastener 112 are used to couple the first component (via the retainer 110) to the second component 106 (via its second opening 120). As shown, the retainer 110 prevents and / or mitigates compression of the first component 104 via a recessed fastener cover (or pocket) 126 formed in the retainer 110. As will be discussed, although Figure 1a to Figure 1h The example depicts a sealed fastener assembly 102 configured to engage a first opening 114 in a first component 104 via a retainer 110 , although other configurations are contemplated, such as using a doghouse structure on one of the first component 104 or the second component 106 .
[0058] It is contemplated that certain components of the multi-component sealed fastener assembly 102 may be manufactured as stamped metal components using metal stamping techniques. For example, the retainer 110 may be made from a single piece of metal and stamped / bent using metal stamping techniques, while the male fastener 108 and the female fastener 112 may be made of metal via one or more metal forming techniques (such as cold forging). In another example, the retainer 110 may be manufactured as a stamped metal component, while the male fastener 108 and the female fastener 112 may be made of a plastic material using plastic injection techniques, additive manufacturing, or other methods. In some examples, one or more components of the sealed fastener assembly 102 may be manufactured using material extrusion (e.g., fused deposition modeling (FDM), stereolithography (SLA), selective laser sintering (SLS), material jetting, binder jetting, powder bed fusion, directed energy deposition, VAT photopolymerization, and / or any other suitable type of additive manufacturing / 3D printing process).
[0059] The first component 104 and the second component 106 can be, for example, automotive panels or other automotive parts. Depending on the application, either component or both components can be made of materials such as metal (or metal alloys), synthetic or semi-synthetic polymers (e.g., plastics such as acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC)), composite materials (e.g., fiberglass), or combinations thereof. In the automotive industry, these components can include, but are not limited to, spoilers, door trim panels, moldings, trims, interior or exterior surfaces, structural parts (e.g., doors, pillars such as A-pillars, B-pillars, C-pillars), dashboard components (e.g., crossbars, brackets, frames), seat frames, center consoles, fenders, and sheet metal frames. The specific materials used will vary based on the application and may involve metals, synthetic or semi-synthetic polymers, composite materials, or combinations of these materials. During installation, such as Figure 1a As best shown in FIG. 1 , the retainer 110 is slid into the first opening 114 of the first component 104, as indicated by arrow 116. The first opening 114 is sized and shaped to receive and retain the retainer 110. In the example shown, a portion of the first component 104 is sandwiched between the plates of the retainer 110 (e.g., along at least a portion of its periphery) such that a fastener hole formed in the retainer 110 is aligned with a second opening 120 formed in the second component 106.
[0060] Once the retainer 110 is installed, the end of the male fastener 108 passes through the fastener hole 136 formed in the retainer 110 and the second opening 120, as indicated by arrow 118, to ultimately engage the female fastener 112. The male fastener 108 and / or the female fastener 112 can be rotated relative to each other about their rotational axis 124 to couple and compress the first component 104 and the second component 106 relative to each other. The sealed fastener assembly 102 includes a seal 138 to mitigate dust, dirt and / or moisture penetration through the second opening 120.
[0061] The seal 138 can be implemented as an annular structure with a seal opening 142 at its center. Depending on the application requirements, the seal 138 can be made of various materials. For example, it can be made of foam, thermoplastic, and / or rubber for lightweight applications that are durable and flexible. When assembled, the seal 138 is configured to receive the male fastener through the seal opening 142. The seal 138 surrounds a portion of the male fastener, such as the unthreaded portion 108c of the handle 108b positioned adjacent to the head 108a of the fastener. This arrangement positions the seal 138 between the first component 104 and the retainer 110, thereby ensuring a firm and tight seal. The seal 138 includes one or more annular rings 140 formed on the substantially flat surface of the seal 138. In the example shown, the seal 138 includes three annular rings 140 protruding from the substantially flat surface, which are concentric with each other and concentric with the seal opening 142.
[0062] Annular rings 140 may be formed on each side of the seal 138 (e.g., on opposing generally planar surfaces of the seal 138). These annular rings 140 are configured to compress and deform when the sealed fastener assembly is completed, thereby enhancing the sealing performance between the first component 104 and the retainer 110. This design ensures that the seal 138 provides both a mechanical seal and an environmental seal, thereby improving the overall integrity and reliability of the fastening system.
[0063] The illustrated retainer 110 includes a body portion 122 formed with a pair of generally parallel plates, illustrated as first plate 122a and second plate 122b, which are resiliently connected to each other via clip sidewalls 122c to form a generally U-shaped body (e.g., a spring clip) having a channel 134 (e.g., a U-shaped channel) therebetween. The first plate 122a and the second plate 122b are resiliently connected such that the pair of opposing first plates 122a and second plates 122b default (e.g., spring back) to a predetermined shape. For example, as Figure 2b and Figure 2cAs best shown in FIG. 1 , the body portion 122 has a generally U-shaped side profile. In this example, the channel 134 is sized to slide over and receive at least a portion of the first component 104 (e.g., the perimeter of the first opening 114). To this end, the first distance (D1) between the pair of opposing first and second plates 122a, 122b generally corresponds to the thickness of the first component 104.
[0064] The sealed fastener assembly 102 further includes one or more features to limit the compression applied to the first component 104 and / or the second component 106, thereby reducing the risk of damaging the components when tightening the male fastener 108 and / or the female fastener 112. In this example, the sealed fastener assembly 102 is a single-sided compression limiter, which can be used in the following situations: only one of the components (e.g., the first component 104) is formed of a material that is easily damaged when compressed (e.g., plastic), while the other component (e.g., the second component 106) can be formed of a material that is not easily damaged (e.g., metal). In this example, the one or more features for limiting compression include a recessed fastener cover 126 and a recessed seal cover (or bag) 144. The recessed fastener cover 126 and the recessed seal cover 144 are configured to slidably engage and receive a portion of the male fastener 108 (e.g., the head 108a and the unthreaded portion 108c of the shank 108b) to limit compression applied by the male fastener 108 and / or the female fastener 112 on the first component 104. For example, when the male fastener 108 is tightened, the unthreaded portion 108c and the head 108a of the male fastener 108 may contact the recessed fastener cover 126, while the recessed seal cover 144 prevents compression of the seal 138, which would otherwise impair its sealing ability.
[0065] The first plate 122a shown includes or otherwise defines a recessed fastener cover 126. The recessed fastener cover 126 is formed to correspond to the shape of the head 108a. In the example shown, the male fastener 108 is a threaded bolt with a hexagonal head 108a, and the recessed fastener cover 126 has a corresponding hexagonal perimeter. When assembled, the head 108a is located within the recessed fastener cover 126, and the head is prevented from rotating about its rotation axis 124 by the sidewall of the recessed fastener cover 126. The second plate 122b shown includes or otherwise defines a recessed seal cover 144. The recessed seal cover 144 is formed to correspond to the shape of the seal 138. In the example shown, the seal 138 is annular, and the recessed seal cover 144 has a corresponding circular perimeter. When assembled, the seal 138 is at least partially located within the recessed seal cover 144. The recessed fastener cover 126 and the recessed seal cover 144 each include an opening (e.g., a first opening 136a and a second opening 136b) that are (at least partially) aligned to collectively define a fastener hole 136 therein (e.g., at the bottom or base of each of the recessed fastener cover 126 and the recessed seal cover 144). In some examples, the body portion 122 may further include a retaining tab (e.g., a barb or a tooth). For example, one or more retaining tabs may clamp, scrape, dig into, or otherwise grip the first component 104 to prevent the retainer 110 from slipping off. Each retaining tab may be stamped and / or die cut from the material of the body portion 122 and bent into shape.
[0066] like Figure 1a As best shown in FIG. 1 , the combined depth (e.g., height of the respective sidewalls) of the recessed fastener cover 126 and the recessed seal cover 144 is substantially equal to the first distance (D1) between the pair of opposing first and second plates 122a, 122b, such that the outer portions of the bottoms of the recessed fastener cover 126 and the recessed seal cover 144 contact and / or rest on each other when assembled. Thus, the recessed fastener cover 126 and the recessed seal cover 144 act as compression limiters for the first component 104. That is, even if the male fastener 108 is over-compressed (e.g., tightened), the recessed fastener cover 126 and the recessed seal cover 144 maintain (or otherwise preserve) the first distance (D1) and prevent the pair of opposing first and second plates 122a, 122b from compressing, which could potentially crush the portion of the first component 104 that is located within the channel 134.
[0067] In some examples, such as Figure 2a to Figure 2eIn the example shown in FIG. 1 , the body portion 122 can further include one or more retaining tabs 202 configured to retain the male fastener 108 within the female fastener cover 126 prior to assembly, thereby enabling the retainer 110 and the male fastener 108 to be packaged as a part assembly (PIA). This configuration reduces the time and effort required by the end user during assembly. The female fastener cover 126 can secure the retainer 110 to the first component 104 via interference with the first opening 114.
[0068] The female fastener 112 may include a head 130, a flange 128, and an internally threaded hole 132 configured to engage the shank 108b. The head 130 may be hexagonal to facilitate tool engagement, while the flange 128 is used to increase the contact surface area between the head 130 and the second component 106. Figure 1a The female fastener 112 is shown in the form of a one-piece flange nut, but in other examples the female fastener 112 may be a multi-piece piece.
[0069] The sealed fastener assembly 102 may also include noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) management features, including the seal 138. These features may include various noise damping, vibration absorbing and isolating elements known in the art, such as grommets, gaskets, washers, vibration-damping materials (e.g., viscoelastic or rubber-like materials), coatings (e.g., viscoelastic polymer coatings), adhesives, and dampers. These NVH management features may be incorporated into the sealed fastener assembly to enhance its ability to absorb and reduce noise, vibration and harshness in the final assembly.
[0070] Figure 2a A side elevation assembled view of a fastening system 100 according to the second aspect of the present disclosure is shown. Figure 2b Shows Figure 2a FIG. 1 is an isometric assembly view of the fastening system 100 , wherein the first component 104 and the second component 106 are omitted for ease of illustration. Figure 2c An isometric view thereof after assembly is shown. Figure 2d Shows Figure 2a The fastening system 100 is shown along the section line BB ( Figure 2c ) is a cross-sectional elevational side view taken from the top. Figure 2e An isometric assembled view of the sealed fastener assembly 102 is shown. Figure 2f A side elevation assembled view of the sealed fastener assembly 102 is shown.
[0071] Figure 2g A top side view of the sealed fastener assembly 102 is shown after assembly. Figure 2h 1 shows a bottom side view of the assembled sealed fastener assembly 102. As in the previous example, during installation, as shown in FIG. Figure 2a As best shown in FIG. 1 , the retainer 110 is slid into the first opening 114 of the first component 104 , as indicated by arrow 116 .
[0072] Figure 2a to Figure 2h The sealed fastener assembly 102 depicted in FIG. 1 is similar to Figure 1a to Figure 1h , with some differences. To avoid redundancy, features and components that have been described with reference to previous examples will not be repeated here. Instead, the focus will be on new or modified aspects. Figure 2a As best shown in FIG. 1 , the recessed fastener cover 126 maintains a second distance (D2) between the first component 104 and the recessed seal cover 144, thereby limiting the compression applied to the first component 104. In this example, the second distance (D2) generally corresponds to the thickness of the second component 106.
[0073] In this example, if Figure 2e As best shown in FIG. 1 , the first plate 122a is molded on two sides (e.g., two opposing sides of the second plate 122b adjacent to the clip sidewall 122c) to define a set of flat wings 122d. Each of the flat wings 122d is generally parallel to the first plate 122a and offset a distance relative to the first plate 122a. In the example shown, the first plate 122a is offset relative to the set of flat wings 122d by a wing sidewall 122e. As shown, the wing sidewall 122e is generally perpendicular to the first plate 122a and each of the flat wings 122d. In the example shown, the height of the wing sidewall 122e generally corresponds to the thickness of the second component 106 (or a portion thereof, such as a convex cover feature).
[0074] Figure 2a to Figure 2h The assembly shown in FIG. 1 includes a pair of retaining tabs 202 configured to engage the unthreaded portion 108c of the handle 108b. Figure 2b and Figure 2e As shown, these retaining tabs 202 extend into openings formed in the recessed seal cover 144 and are aligned with the non-threaded portion 108c of the handle 108b after assembly. Each retaining tab 202 is elastically coupled to the second plate 122b and is formed into a Y shape.
[0075] Figure 3a A side elevation assembled view of a fastening system 100 according to a third aspect of the present disclosure is shown. Figure 3b Shows Figure 3a FIG. 1 is an isometric assembly view of the fastening system 100 , wherein the first component 104 and the second component 106 are omitted for ease of illustration. Figure 3c An isometric view thereof after assembly is shown. Figure 3d Shows Figure 3a The fastening system 100 is shown along the section line CC ( Figure 3c ) is a cross-sectional elevational side view taken from the top. Figure 3e An isometric assembled view of the sealed fastener assembly 102 is shown. Figure 3f A side elevation assembled view of the sealed fastener assembly 102 is shown.
[0076] Figure 3g A top side view of the sealed fastener assembly 102 is shown after assembly. Figure 3h An assembled bottom side view of the sealed fastener assembly 102 is shown.
[0077] Figure 3a to Figure 3h The sealed fastener assembly 102 depicted in FIG. 1 is similar to Figure 1a to Figure 1h as well as Figure 2a to Figure 2h The components shown in FIG. 1 and FIG. 2 have some differences. To avoid redundancy, features and components that have been described with reference to previous examples will not be repeated here. Instead, the focus will be on new or modified aspects.
[0078] In this example, the first component 104 is depicted as having an opening 114 formed therein, while the second component 106 features a convex cover structure 302 formed therein or thereon. The convex cover structure 302 defines a slot 304 having one or more engagement features 306. This structure allows the first component 104 to be compatible with a variety of fasteners, including the sealed fastener assembly 102. The opening 114 and / or the convex cover structure 302 can be incorporated into the first component 104 and / or the second component 106 during the manufacturing process or during additive post-manufacturing using mechanical processes (e.g., drilling, cutting, engraving), adhesives, or other methods.
[0079] By incorporating the collar 308 into the retainer 110 including the internally threaded bore 132, a separate female fastener 112 is no longer required. In this example, the collar 308 is integrated into the first plate 122a and extends toward the second plate 122b, effectively replacing the female fastener cover 126. Figure 1a As shown, the collar 308 is designed to receive and engage the threaded portion 108d of the shank 108b. Figure 3d As shown, the collar 308 acts as a compression limiter. The collar 308 is sized so that its height (i.e., represented as a third distance (D3)) is substantially equal to the combined thickness of the engagement feature 306 and the base of the female seal boot 144 (i.e., the material thickness of the female seal boot 144). The collar 308 is configured to partially enter the opening 114.
[0080] In this example, the seal 138 includes an annular portion 138a and a collar portion 138b extending perpendicularly from the annular portion 138a. One or more annular rings 140 are formed on one side of the seal 138 (e.g., the side facing the first component 104), while the collar portion 138b is positioned on the opposite side of the seal 138. The annular portion 138a and the collar portion 138b are formed as a unitary structure. The collar 308 is configured to partially enter the opening 114, thereby forming an annular gap 310 between the collar 308 and the opening 114. As shown in FIG. Figure 3d As shown, the collar portion 138 b extends through the annular gap 310 , thereby forming a seal between the collar 308 and the opening 114 .
