Abstract
Description
Technical Field
[0001] The present invention relates to lighting fixtures, and more particularly to lighting fixtures employing rotatable optical assemblies operable to provide a variety of adjustable lighting distributions. Background Art
[0002] Lighting fixtures (e.g., sidewalk fixtures, roadway fixtures, and / or parking lot fixtures) provide lighting distributions to meet various area lighting requirements. For example, a lighting fixture may provide a Type II distribution suitable for sidewalks, highway on- and off-ramps, and other narrow corridors. In other embodiments, a lighting fixture may provide a Type III distribution, which is generally suitable for roadway lighting and parking lots requiring a larger illuminated area. Alternatively, a V-shaped lighting distribution may be provided. The V-shaped lighting distribution may be circular or square, with isotropic intensity at all side angles.
[0003] A significant drawback of existing lighting fixtures is the static nature of their design. Lighting fixtures are designed to provide a specific lighting distribution for a specific application. Once manufactured and installed, these fixtures lack the ability to be adjusted and / or provide a variety of lighting distributions for various applications or functions. This lack of adjustability can require expensive fixture replacement to accommodate changes in lighting conditions. Summary of the Invention
[0004] In view of the above shortcomings, this document describes a lighting fixture that can provide multiple lighting distributions from a single architecture. The lighting fixture can be adjustable, thereby enabling an end user to select a desired lighting distribution. In some embodiments, the lighting fixture includes a support member and a lighting assembly, wherein the support member extends along an axis from a first end to a second end, and the lighting assembly is connected to the second end of the support member. The lighting assembly has a light-emitting surface including a fixed optical assembly and a rotatable optical assembly, wherein the light-emitting surface faces the support member, and the lighting distribution of the lighting assembly varies with the rotational position of the rotatable optical assembly. In some embodiments, the lighting fixture provides an asymmetric lighting distribution. Alternatively, the lighting fixture can provide a symmetric or substantially symmetric lighting distribution.
[0005] In another aspect, a lighting assembly of a lighting fixture includes a light emitting surface including at least one rotatable optical component, wherein a lighting distribution of the lighting assembly varies with a rotational position of the rotatable optical component. In some embodiments, the light emitting surface further includes one or more fixed optical components.
[0006] In another aspect, a method for illuminating a surface is described herein. In some embodiments, the method includes providing a lighting fixture comprising a support member extending along an axis from a first end to a second end, and a lighting assembly coupled to the second end of the support member, the lighting assembly having a light-emitting surface comprising a fixed optical assembly and a rotatable optical assembly, wherein the light-emitting surface faces the support member. Adjusting the rotational position of the rotatable optical assembly changes the distribution of illumination directed toward the surface by the lighting assembly. As described herein, the rotatable optical assembly can be adjusted to provide an asymmetric illumination distribution or a symmetric illumination distribution.

[0018] By referring to the following description of specific embodiments and examples and their context, the embodiments described herein can be more easily understood. However, the elements, devices and methods described herein are not limited to the specific embodiments proposed in the specific embodiments and examples. It should be appreciated that these embodiments are merely for the purpose of illustrating the principles of the present invention. For those skilled in the art, multiple modifications and adjustments will be apparent without departing from the spirit and scope of the present invention.
[0019] In one aspect, a lighting fixture includes a support member extending along an axis from a first end to a second end, and a lighting assembly coupled to the second end of the support member. The lighting assembly has a light-emitting surface including a fixed optical assembly and a rotatable optical assembly, wherein the light-emitting surface faces the support member, and a lighting distribution of the lighting assembly varies with the rotational position of the rotatable optical assembly.
[0020] Figure 1 1 shows a front cross-sectional view of a lighting fixture according to some embodiments. Figure 1 In the embodiment of FIG. 1 , the lighting assembly 11 is connected to the second end 12 of the support member 10 via an arm 13 extending in a vertical direction. A light-emitting surface 14 of the lighting assembly 11 faces the second end 12 of the support member 10. Light-emitting surface 14 can direct light outside the diameter of the second end of the support member 10, as further described herein. Furthermore, light-emitting surface 14 can be perpendicular or substantially perpendicular to the axis A of the support member 10. Figure 2 Shown Figure 1 . The light emitting surface 14 includes a rotatable optical component 15 and a fixed optical component 16. The rotatable optical component 15 can rotate in the plane of the light emitting surface 14 or in a plane parallel or substantially parallel to the light emitting surface 14.
[0021] The rotatable optical assembly of the lighting fixture described herein can be radially adjusted in any desired increments. In some embodiments, for example, the rotational position of the rotatable optical assembly can be adjusted in increments of at least 1 degree. The rotational position of the rotatable optical assembly can also be adjusted in increments of 5 to 45 degrees, or up to 180 degrees. In some embodiments, the rotatable optical assembly is positioned within an annular recess of the lighting assembly. As further described below, the rotatable optical assembly can include a rotatable support, disk, or wafer to which the light source and optics of the assembly can be attached.
[0022] In addition, the rotational position of the rotatable optical assembly can be fixed by a locking mechanism. Any desired locking mechanism can be used. In some embodiments, the locking mechanism is mechanical. For example, the rotatable optical assembly can be pressed into the head space above the optical assembly. Pressing the optical assembly releases the rotation of the optical assembly (allowing the optical assembly to rotate freely). Releasing the pressing force will cause the optical assembly to return to the locked position in the annular groove. In some embodiments, the rotatable optical assembly can be connected to a spring or other resistance mechanism, thereby generating the need for a pressing force to move the optical assembly to a rotatable position. The spring or other resistance mechanism can prevent the rotation of the optical assembly in the absence of a pressing force. Figure 3 1 shows a cutaway cross-sectional view of an illumination assembly and associated rotatable optical assembly according to some embodiments. Figure 3 As shown, the rotatable optical assembly 16 is located in an annular locking groove or recess 17. The side of the annular groove or recess 17 can have one or more stops corresponding to the radial or angular adjustment increments of the rotatable optical assembly 16. Applying sufficient pressing force (here 2 pounds to 5 pounds) will cause the rotatable optical assembly 16 to overcome (resist) the compression of the spring 18, thereby vertically shifting the optical assembly 16 above the stop and into a rotatable position. The pressing force required to move the optical assembly 16 to the rotatable position can be set to any desired value. In some embodiments, the pressing force is 2 pounds to 10 pounds. The lighting assembly can also include a hard stop located in the top space above the annular locking groove or recess 17. The hard stop can prevent the optical assembly from falling out of the recess 17 or being incorrectly oriented in the recess 17 during rotation. Figure 10 One embodiment of a hard stop 10 is shown in the headspace of a lighting assembly 12. The hard stop 10 is positioned above a rotatable optical element 13.
[0023] Alternatively, in some embodiments, the top cover of the lighting assembly or a panel on the top cover can be reversibly removed to expose the top of the rotatable optical assembly. The optical assembly can then be rotationally adjusted by engaging the top side of the rotatable optical assembly. For example, the optical assembly can have one or more structures for engaging with a rotational tool. In further embodiments, the rotatable optical assembly can be rotationally adjusted by an electronic device that utilizes one or more electric motors. In some embodiments, for example, the lighting fixture can include one or more processors or control systems and associated software for controlling the rotational position of the rotatable optical assembly. In some embodiments, the lighting fixture includes one or more electronic ports, such as USB ports, for interfacing with a user control device to adjust the rotational position of the rotatable optical assembly. In other embodiments, the lighting fixture includes one or more sensors operable to receive remote signals for electronically adjusting the rotatable optical assembly. The one or more sensors can also be used to adjust other characteristics of the lighting fixture, including but not limited to the brightness (illuminance) of the lighting fixture, the color of the emitted light, and / or other operating characteristics of the lighting fixture.

Rotatable optical assembly 81 and fixed optical assembly 82 are in a facing position with each other. Rotatable optical assembly 81 can be rotated in a concentric manner to be partially or completely (completely) adjacent to fixed optical assembly 82. This configuration is reversible, wherein the fixed optical assembly can be located within the circumference of the rotatable optical assembly.
[0028] The fixed optical component and the rotatable optical component may have the same profile or shape, e.g. Figure 1-4 The circle and Figure 8 The arc shape shown. Alternatively, the fixed optical assembly and the rotatable optical assembly may have different profiles or shapes. In some embodiments, the fixed optical assembly may be polygonal, including but not limited to triangles, squares, rectangles, or hexagons. The rotatable optical assembly may also have a polygonal profile or a curved profile. In addition, the light-emitting surface of the lighting assembly may include multiple rotatable optical assemblies and / or multiple fixed optical assemblies. The number, profile, and shape of the fixed optical assemblies and the rotatable optical assemblies may be selected based on the lighting distribution provided by the lighting fixture.
[0029] The fixed optical assembly and the rotatable optical assembly can employ any desired light source and optical devices. The specific characteristics of the light source and associated optical devices can be selected based on the desired lighting characteristics and lighting distribution. In some embodiments, the light source comprises a light emitting diode (LED). The LED can have any desired arrangement, such as a one-dimensional array or a two-dimensional array. In some embodiments, the LED light source is arranged in a ring along the periphery or circumference of the fixed optical assembly and / or the rotatable optical assembly. The LED light source can include packaged LED chips or unpackaged LED chips. The LED elements or LED modules can use the same or different types and / or configurations of LEDs. For example, the LED can be monochromatic or any desired color combination. The LED can include a single or multiple phosphor-converted white LEDs and / or colored LEDs, and / or bare LED chips mounted individually or together on a single substrate or package, such as at least one phosphor-coated LED chip alone or in combination with at least one colored LED chip, such as a green LED, a yellow LED, a red LED, etc. The LED module can include phosphor-converted white LED chips or colored LED chips and / or bare LED chips of the same or different colors mounted directly on a printed circuit board, such as a chip-on-board, and / or include packaged phosphor-converted white LEDs or colored LEDs mounted on a printed circuit board, such as a metal core printed circuit board or FR4 board. In some embodiments, the LEDs can be mounted directly to a heat sink or other type of board or substrate. Depending on the embodiment, it will be understood by those skilled in the art that an LED arrangement or lighting arrangement using remote phosphor technology can be employed, and examples of remote phosphor technology are described in U.S. Patent No. 7,614,759, which is incorporated herein by reference.
[0030] Where it is desired to produce soft white lighting with improved colour rendering (colour rendering), each LED element or LED module or a plurality of such elements or modules may comprise one or more blue to yellow LEDs and one or more red or red / orange LEDs. Any colour combination of LEDs in a module is contemplated. Furthermore, the LEDs may be arranged in different configurations and / or layouts as desired. Other LED combinations of single and / or multiple LED chips may be used to produce different colour temperatures and appearances, the single and / or multiple LED chips being packaged into separate packages and / or arranged as a chip-on-board for direct mounting on a printed circuit board. In one embodiment, the light source may comprise any LED, for example using LED Technology's XP-Q LED. For example, when illuminated as herein Figure 7C The color output of the fixed optical assembly and the rotatable optical assembly can be the same when illuminating the same area as shown. Figure 6C The color output of the fixed and rotatable optical assemblies may vary depending on the area shown. This color differentiation can be used to designate areas where standing or walking is permitted and areas where walking should be avoided.
[0031] When LEDs are selected as the light source for the fixed optical assembly and / or the rotatable optical assembly, the associated electronics (including the driver) can be located in the support to which the lighting assembly is attached. The circuitry can extend from the support structure to the lighting assembly through one or more structural conduits, such as an arm connecting the lighting assembly to the second end of the support. Figure 5 An embodiment is shown in which the LED electronics are located in the support of the lighting fixture. [0032] In addition to the light source, the fixed optical assembly and the rotatable optical assembly also include optical devices associated with the light source. The optical devices for the fixed assembly can be selected independently of the optical devices for the rotatable assembly, or selected together with the optical devices for the rotatable assembly. Each of the fixed optical assembly and the rotatable optical assembly can be selected with a symmetrical or asymmetrical illumination distribution. In some embodiments, the fixed optical assembly and the rotatable optical assembly have the same illumination distribution. Alternatively, the fixed optical assembly and the rotatable optical assembly can have different illumination distributions. In some embodiments, for example, each of the fixed optical assembly and the rotatable optical assembly has a Type III or Type IV illumination distribution. In some embodiments, a separate optical device is provided for each light source in the fixed optical assembly and / or the rotatable optical assembly. For example, each LED in the assembly may have a separate optical device. Alternatively, an optical device may be used as a group of light sources in the fixed optical assembly and / or the rotatable optical assembly. For example, a single optical device may be placed above the LEDs in the fixed optical assembly or the rotatable optical assembly. The optical devices of the fixed optical assembly and the rotatable optical assembly can operate using the principles of refraction, reflection, and / or waveguide / total internal reflection. Optics for the fixed optical assembly and / or the rotatable optical assembly may include one or more waveguides, including the waveguides described in US Patent No. 11,249,239, which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety.
[0033] The illumination distribution provided by the illumination assembly is a combination of the individual illumination distributions provided by the fixed optical assembly and the rotatable optical assembly. Thus, the illumination distribution provided by the illumination assembly can be adjusted based on the rotational position of the rotatable optical assembly. In some embodiments, the rotational position of the rotatable optical assembly is configured to provide a symmetrical illumination distribution from the illumination assembly. The rotational position of the rotatable optical assembly can also be configured to provide an asymmetrical illumination distribution from the illumination assembly. Figures 6A to 6C An embodiment is shown in which the rotational position of the rotatable optical assembly is selected to provide a symmetrical or substantially symmetrical illumination distribution from the illumination assembly. Figures 6A to 6C In the illustrated embodiment, the fixed optical assembly and the rotatable optical assembly each have an asymmetric illumination distribution, such as a Type III or Type IV distribution. Figure 7B As shown, a 0 degree offset between the asymmetric illumination distributions of the fixed optical assembly and the rotatable optical assembly provides an asymmetric illumination distribution. Figure 7C The asymmetric lighting distribution is further illustrated, wherein the lighting fixture is a lamp post illuminating a road. In this embodiment, most of the light from the lighting fixture is directed toward the road, rather than toward the grass and / or landscape area behind the lamp post. In addition, the rotatable position of the rotatable optical assembly can take Figures 6A-6C and Figures 7A-7C Additional positions between the 0 and 180 degree offsets shown in FIG. 5 are provided to provide various lighting distributions for the lighting assembly.
[0035] Figure 9 Another embodiment is shown in which a lighting fixture or lamp post has different lighting distributions depending on the position or location of the lamp post relative to the desired lighting area. Figure 9 In the embodiment of FIG, the rotational positions of lamp posts 91 and 92 are selected to direct the illumination distribution in the same direction as the fixed optical assembly, thereby producing a Type IV distribution on roadway 90. The rotational position of lamp post 93 is selected to provide a Type III distribution in conjunction with the fixed optical assembly. Lamp post 93 is located at a corner of roadway 90 and therefore requires a different illumination distribution.
[0036] The lighting fixtures described herein can be used in a variety of lighting applications. Figure 6C and Figure 7C Shown, the lighting fixture can be a lamp post for road lighting. In certain embodiments, the lighting fixture can be used for illuminating walls, aisles and / or ceilings.
[0037] In another aspect, a lighting assembly of a lighting fixture has a light emitting surface including at least one rotatable optical assembly, wherein the lighting distribution of the lighting assembly varies with the rotational position of the rotatable optical assembly. The rotatable optical assembly can have any of the above-described structures and / or characteristics. In some embodiments, the rotatable optical assembly has Figure 3 and Figure 4The structure and operation shown are shown in FIG. Furthermore, in some embodiments, the light-emitting surface may include multiple rotatable optical assemblies. The selection of optics for the rotatable assemblies may be relative to or independent of one another. The light-emitting surface may also include one or more fixed optical assemblies that cooperate with the rotatable optical assemblies to provide a desired illumination distribution from the light-emitting surface. The one or more fixed optical assemblies may have any of the architectures and / or characteristics described above.
[0038] In another aspect, a method of illuminating a surface is described herein. In some embodiments, the method includes providing a lighting fixture comprising a support and a lighting assembly, the support extending along an axis from a first end to a second end, the lighting assembly connected to the second end of the support, the lighting assembly having a light-emitting surface comprising a fixed optical assembly and a rotatable optical assembly, wherein the light-emitting surface faces the support. The rotational position of the rotatable optical assembly is adjusted to change the lighting distribution directed toward the surface by the lighting assembly. As described herein, the rotatable optical assembly can be adjusted to provide an asymmetric lighting distribution or a symmetric lighting distribution. In this method, the lighting fixture can have any of the characteristics, architectures, and / or designs described above and / or shown in the figures herein.
[0039] To achieve the various objectives of the present invention, various embodiments of the present invention have been described. It should be appreciated that these embodiments are merely illustrative of the principles of the present invention. It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various modifications and adaptations may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the present invention.
