[0021] Reference Figures 1 to 3 , a scroll compressor used with a reed valve assembly 200 is generally indicated at 100. The compressor 100 includes a compressor housing 102, which forms at least one sealed cavity in which refrigerant compression is achieved. The compressor housing 102 includes a shell 104, an end cover 106, and a base 110 disposed at opposite ends of the shell 104.

[0022] The compressor 100 includes a fixed scroll 120 and a movable scroll 122 that are operably engaged with a motor assembly 124. The scroll compressor 100 can be a floating orbital design, a floating non-orbital design such as co-rotation, and a related compressor design. The end cover 106 and the fixed scroll 120 at least partially define a first chamber 128. For example, at least a portion of the housing 104 and / or a muffler plate (not shown) at least partially define the first chamber 128. The housing 104 at least partially defines the second chamber 130. The motor assembly 124 includes a motor stator 134 and a rotor 136. The compressor 100 also includes a drive shaft 138 that can be press-fitted in the rotor 136. The rotor 136 transmits rotational power to the drive shaft 138. The motor assembly 124 can be a variable speed motor for rotating the drive shaft 138 at any speed in a plurality of speeds. In the illustrated embodiment, the motor assembly 124 is disposed in the housing 104, for example, in the second chamber 130. In some other embodiments, the compressor 100 may be an open drive compressor driven by a motor assembly disposed outside the compressor housing 102. The compressor 100 further includes a first bearing assembly 140 and a second bearing assembly 142 that may rotatably support the drive shaft 138.

[0023] The axial direction includes a direction aligned with and / or parallel to the longitudinal axis A1 of the drive shaft body 160. The radial direction includes a direction radial to the longitudinal axis A1 and perpendicular to the longitudinal axis A1. The drive shaft 138 includes a drive shaft body 160 and an eccentric body 162, which can protrude from the drive shaft body 160. The drive shaft body 160 and the eccentric body 162 are cylindrical in shape. The eccentric body 162 includes a longitudinal axis A2 that deviates from the longitudinal axis A1. The drive shaft body 160 is rotatably supported by the first bearing assembly 140 and the second bearing assembly 142, respectively. The bearing assemblies 140 and 142 may include ball assemblies. In other embodiments, the first bearing assembly 140 may include other types of rolling bearings and / or sleeve / journal bearings. The eccentric body 162 of the drive shaft 138 may be drivingly engaged to the drive bearing 164. The drive bearing 164 transmits the rotational motion from the eccentric body 162 to the movable scroll 122.

[0024] The inlet 175 is attached to the compressor housing 102 in the end cover 106 for drawing the working fluid into the fluid pockets defined by the spiral wrap 172 of the orbiting scroll 122 and the spiral wrap 146 of the fixed scroll 120, in which the working fluid is compressed. After the working fluid is compressed, the compressed working fluid leaves the fluid pockets defined by the spiral wraps of the fixed scroll 120 and the orbiting scroll 122 through the discharge passage and enters the chamber 128. The compressed working fluid flows from the chamber 128 into the chamber 130 through one or more passages between the fixed scroll 120 and the orbiting scroll 122 and the housing 104. The compressed working fluid leaves the chamber 130 through the discharge fitting 176. The discharge fitting 176 can be attached to the base 110 of the compressor housing 102. A discharge valve assembly, not shown, can be disposed in the discharge fitting 176 and can generally prevent backflow through the discharge fitting 176. The sealing terminal may be attached to the compressor housing 102 at a base 110 .

[0025] The compressor 100 may include one or more counterweights attached to the drive shaft body 160 to rotationally balance the drive shaft 138 .

[0026] Reference Figure 3 The fixed scroll 120 is included in Figure 3 A compressor surface 202 that is obscured by the valve assembly 200 and defines one or more valve openings 204. The valve openings 204 are located at Fig.10 Flow through one or more of the valve openings 204 formed through the compressor surface 202 can be regulated by the valve assembly 200. In the illustrated embodiment, the compressor surface 202 is the surface of the fixed scroll 120. The valve assembly 200 can be used to regulate flow through valve openings 204 formed in other and / or alternative surfaces of the compressor 100. The valve assembly 200 can be used to regulate flow through valve openings 204 formed in the surface of additional and / or alternative devices. The compressor surface 202 can have a vertical axis Z 202 The valve opening 204 may be substantially parallel to the vertical axis Z 202 extend.

[0027] Reference Figures 5 to 10 , the valve assembly 200 includes a reed 210, a backing 212, and the valve assembly 200 can be mounted to the compressor 100 using a fastener 214. The valve assembly 200 can be mounted to the compressor 100 using a single fastener 214. When the valve assembly 200 is mounted to the compressor surface 202, the reed 210 is disposed between the compressor surface 202 and the backing 212. The backing 212 includes a backing body 220 having a backing thickness t 212 , and along the backing length L between the first end 222 and the second end 224212 The backing 212 includes a substantially flat portion 226 and an arched portion 228 that is arched relative to the flat portion 226 .

[0028] The reed 210 includes a reed body 240 extending between a first end 242 and a second end 244. The reed body 240 is substantially flat between the first end 242 and the second end 244, thereby having a relatively constant thickness t 210 . Reed thickness t 210 can be smaller than the thickness t of the backing 212 212 .

[0029] When the valve assembly 200 is mounted to the compressor surface 202, at least a portion of the reed 210 is held flat against the compressor surface 202 by the flat portion 226 of the backing 212. A portion of the reed 210 can bend between the closed position and the open position. When the reed 210 is in the closed position, the reed 210 substantially blocks the valve opening 204. When the reed 210 is in the closed position, at least a portion of the reed 210 can cover the valve opening 204, and the reed 210 can contact the compressor surface 202 around the periphery of the valve opening 204. When the reed 210 is in the closed position, the reed 210 can extend along the length L of the reed 210. 210 Flat against the compressor surface 202, for example, the reed 210 along the length L of the reed 210 210 Parallel to the compressor surface 202. When the reed 210 is in the open position, the reed 210 does not substantially block the valve opening 204. When the reed 210 is in the open position, at least a portion of the reed 210 may bend away from the compressor surface 202 toward the arcuate portion 228 of the backing 212.

[0030] Reference Figures 4 to 5 , the backing body 220 of the backing 212 defines a backing mounting opening 250. The backing 212 of this embodiment includes a single backing mounting opening 250. The backing mounting opening 250 can be formed through the flat portion 226 of the backing 212. The backing mounting opening 250 extends completely through the thickness t of the backing body 220. 212 The second end 224 of the backing 212 is suitably rounded or curved so as to have no sharp edges or corners.

[0031] The backing body 220 defines a backing anti-rotation feature 254. The backing anti-rotation feature 254 of this embodiment is formed into or integral with the backing body 220 near the first end 222 of the backing body 220. The backing anti-rotation feature 254 may include a tab 256 (e.g., a protrusion) that protrudes generally perpendicularly from the flat portion 226. The backing anti-rotation feature 254 may be formed by bending the tab 256 of the backing body 220 so that the tab 256 extends generally perpendicularly from the backing body 200. The backing 212 may be formed of any suitable material, such as a metal, a composite material, and / or a powder metal mixture that has been sintered.

[0032] The reed body 240 defines a reed mounting opening 260. The reed 210 of this embodiment includes a single reed mounting opening 260. The reed mounting opening 260 extends completely through the thickness t of the reed body 240. 210 . The second end 224 can be rounded so that there are no sharp edges or corners. The reed body 240 also defines a reed anti-rotation feature 264. The reed anti-rotation feature 264 can be formed on the reed body 240 near the first end 242 of the reed body 240 and / or through the reed body 240. The reed anti-rotation feature 264 may include a channel 266 (e.g., a groove). The channel 266 may be partially defined by an arched or semicircular border 268. The semicircular border 268 may have a radius of curvature that is the same as the radius of curvature of the reed mounting opening 260. Therefore, a single tool can be used to form the reed mounting opening 260 and the reed anti-rotation feature 264. The reed anti-rotation feature 264 may have other shapes and / or sizes. For example, the reed anti-rotation feature 264 may include one or more straight edges. The reed anti-rotation feature 264 may include a border that completely encloses the channel 266.

[0033] The reed anti-rotation feature 264 may be separated from the reed mounting opening 260 by a distance d a The reed mounting opening 260 may be located closer to the first end 242 than to the second end 224. The reed mounting opening 260 may be spaced apart from the first end 242 by a distance d b The reed 210 may be formed of any suitable material, such as metal, composite material, steel, stainless steel, fiberglass, and carbon fiber. The reed 210 may be formed of a material and / or have a suitable shape, such as having a thickness t 210 , so that the reed 210 is flexible.

[0034] When the reed 210 and the backing 212 are assembled together to form the valve assembly 200, the backing mounting opening 250 and the reed mounting opening 260 are sized and shaped to be the same and / or substantially the same, such as having the same diameter, or having the same diameter within an acceptable manufacturing tolerance range, such as within ±.0065 inches for a 24 inch diameter. The backing mounting opening 250 and the reed mounting opening 260 can be formed using the same tool. For example, using the same drill bit.

[0035] Reference Fig.10 The compressor surface 202 also includes a compressor mounting opening 270 for mounting the valve assembly 200 to the compressor surface 202. For each valve assembly 200, the compressor surface 202 includes a single compressor mounting opening 270. The compressor mounting opening 270 may be a compressor mounting opening having a diameter d 274 The compressor surface 202 may further define a compressor anti-rotation feature 274. The compressor anti-rotation feature 274 may be a blind hole or an opening formed through the compressor surface 202. The compressor surface 202 may include a single compressor anti-rotation feature 274 for use with a separate valve assembly 200. The compressor mounting opening 270 and the compressor anti-rotation feature 274 may have the same shape and size, such as the same diameter, and may be formed using the same tool, such as a single drill bit. The depth of the compressor mounting opening 270 may be different from the depth of the anti-rotation feature, for example, the anti-rotation feature may have a depth shallower than the depth of the compressor mounting opening 270.

[0036] When the backing mounting opening 250 and the reed mounting opening 260 are aligned, the fastener 214 can pass through the backing mounting opening 250 and the reed mounting opening 260 and enter into the compressor mounting opening 270. The fastener 214 can be a screw, a bolt, a rivet or any suitable attachment mechanism. The compressor mounting opening 270 can be threaded, and the fastener 214 can be threadedly engaged with the threads of the compressor mounting opening 270. When the fastener 214 is threadedly engaged with the threaded blind hole of the compressor mounting opening 270, at least a portion of the reed 210 is positioned between the backing 212 and the compressor surface 202.

[0037] Furthermore, when the compressor mounting opening 270, the reed mounting opening 260, and the backing mounting opening 250 are aligned, the backing anti-rotation feature 254 can be positioned to pass through the reed anti-rotation feature 264 and into the compressor anti-rotation feature 274. The backing anti-rotation feature 254 can extend into the compressor anti-rotation feature 274 to a depth d c . Depth d cThe backing anti-rotation feature 254 may extend into the compressor opening to any suitable depth to retain the backing anti-rotation feature 254 within the reed anti-rotation feature 264 and the compressor anti-rotation feature 274. The width W of the reed anti-rotation feature 264 may be substantially the same as the depth of the blind hole compressor anti-rotation feature 274. The backing anti-rotation feature 254 may extend into the compressor opening to any suitable depth to retain the backing anti-rotation feature 254 within the reed anti-rotation feature 264 and the compressor anti-rotation feature 274. 254 Can be substantially the same as the diameter of the compressor anti-rotation feature 274. Width W 254 Can be slightly smaller than diameter d 274 , so that the reed anti-rotation feature 264 can be press-fit into frictional engagement with the compressor anti-rotation feature 274. No tools are required to assemble the backing anti-rotation feature 254 with the reed anti-rotation feature 264 and / or the compressor anti-rotation feature 274.

[0038] Fig.11 is a process flow diagram of a method 500 for manufacturing and assembling an exemplary reed valve assembly, such as a reed valve assembly for use with Figure 1 The reed valve assembly 200 and the compressor shown in FIG. Figure 3 The reed valve assembly 200 is shown in FIG.

[0039] The method 500 of this embodiment includes making (e.g., manufacturing, assembling or forming) the reed body 240 using a suitable stamping operation. For example, such an operation can use a stamping part or a die. The boundary or profile of the stamping part can be shaped to cut or punch out the periphery of the reed body 240. The reed body 240 is appropriately stamped from a substantially flat sheet of metal with a suitable thickness to serve as the reed 210. The method 500 also includes forming 502 the reed installation opening 260. The die may include an outer cutting edge for cutting the outer periphery of the reed body 240 and an inner cutter with a circular shape for cutting the reed installation opening 260. The method 500 may include using one or more dies and / or multiple stamping processes to form the reed body 240. For example, the method 500 may include a first stamping process for cutting the outer periphery of the reed body 240 and a second stamping process for cutting the reed installation opening 260.

[0040] The method 500 may include forming 502 the reed anti-rotation feature 264 , for example, forming the reed anti-rotation feature 264 as a cutout in a perimeter of the reed body 240 .

[0041] The method 500 includes making (e.g., manufacturing, assembling, or forming) the backing body 220 using a suitable stamping process that uses a stamping part or die to form the perimeter and / or backing opening of the backing body 200 from a flat sheet of metal having a thickness suitable for the backing 212. The method 500 includes bending the arched portion 228 of the backing 212 relative to the flat portion 226. The method 500 includes forming 506 the backing anti-rotation feature 254. Forming 506 the backing anti-rotation feature 254 may also include bending the tab 256 of the backing 212 about 90° relative to the flat portion 226 of the backing 212. The method 500 includes forming 508 the backing mounting opening 250 and / or forming 506 the reed 210 mounting opening 504. In one embodiment, the forming 508 step is a drilling operation using a drill bit, and in one example, this step does not require a tool change. Forming 508 the backer mounting opening 250 and / or forming 506 the mounting opening 504 of the reed 210 may include a stamping process, such as a stamping process using a die and a mandrel.

[0042] Manufacturing the reed 210 and manufacturing the backing 212 may include performing any suitable manufacturing process. In some embodiments, manufacturing the reed 210 and the backing 212 may include a powder metallurgy process, which includes preparing and mixing a powder composite material, compacting the powder, and sintering. Manufacturing the reed 210 and the backing 212 may include performing a casting process. For example, the backing body 220 and the backing anti-rotation feature 254 may be integrally formed using a casting process so that the backing anti-rotation feature 254 protrudes outward from the backing body 200.

[0043] The method 500 includes forming 510 the compressor mounting opening 270. Forming the compressor mounting opening 270 may include drilling to a depth to form a blind hole. Forming the compressor mounting opening 270 may also include forming threads on a surface of the blind hole. The drill bit used to form the compressor mounting opening 270 may be the same as the drill bit used to form the backing mounting opening 250 and / or the reed mounting opening 260.

[0044] The method 500 includes forming 512 the compressor anti-rotation feature 274. A single tool may be used to form the compressor anti-rotation feature 274 and the compressor mounting opening 270. Forming the compressor anti-rotation feature 274 and forming the compressor mounting opening 270 may be formed sequentially in either order without requiring tool changes.

[0045] The method 500 includes one or more steps for assembling the valve assembly 200 and attaching the valve assembly 200 to the compressor surface 202. The method 500 suitably includes engaging 514 the reed anti-rotation feature 264 with the backing anti-rotation feature 254. Engaging 514 the reed anti-rotation feature 264 with the backing anti-rotation feature 254 also includes inserting the tab 256 into the channel 266. The engagement of the reed anti-rotation feature 264 with the backing anti-rotation feature 254 limits the reed 210 and the backing 212 about a vertical axis Z extending perpendicular to the flat portion 226. 226 The method 500 may also include engaging 516 the backing anti-rotation feature 254 with the compressor anti-rotation feature 274. The engaging 516 may include inserting the backing anti-rotation feature 254 into the compressor anti-rotation feature 274.

[0046] When the backing anti-rotation feature 254 engages with the compressor anti-rotation feature 274, the reed mounting opening 260, the backing mounting opening 250, and the compressor mounting opening 270 are aligned. The method 500 includes fastening 518 the reed 210 assembly to the compressor surface 202. Fastening 518 may include inserting the fastener 214 through the reed mounting opening 260 and through the backing mounting opening 250 and into the compressor mounting opening 270. The method 500 may include screwing the fastener 214 into the compressor mounting opening 270 to be in threaded engagement. In some embodiments, the fastener 214 may be press-fit into the reed mounting opening 260, the backing mounting opening 250, and the compressor mounting opening 270.

[0047] As compared with known methods and systems, the embodiments of the valve assembly described and shown can reduce manufacturing and assembly time. For example, the new valve assembly is mounted to the compressor surface using only a single mounting opening formed in the reed, backing and compressor surface, and only a single fastener is required. The anti-rotation feature, the reed anti-rotation feature, the backing anti-rotation feature and the compressor anti-rotation feature limit the rotation of the valve assembly to keep the valve assembly aligned with the valve opening without the need to use additional fasteners or additional tools. The anti-rotation feature eliminates the need for secondary mounting openings and / or secondary fixings for each valve assembly, thereby reducing processing and assembly time. Compared with conventional systems that require more than one fastener to keep the reed valve assembly aligned, a single fastener reduces assembly time. One or more anti-rotation features in the anti-rotation feature can be formed using the same tool as the tool used to form one or more mounting openings in the mounting opening, thereby reducing manufacturing time by not requiring tool replacement. For example, a single tool can be used to form a compressor mounting opening and a compressor anti-rotation feature. In another example, a single tool can be used to form a reed mounting opening and a reed anti-rotation feature.
